Environment, health care, jobs top Blaney’s agenda Cites hard work as key to her election victory in face of Liberal wave AlistAir tAylor Campbell RiveR miRRoR

North Island-Powell River MP-elect Rachel Blaney is greeted by cheers as she arrives at her election night gathering. The rookie MP won 40 per cent of the vote.

New North Island-Powell River MP-elect’s first priority will be “figuring out how everything works” when she gets to Ottawa to take up her seat in the House of Commons. Once there, though, the job will be “making sure that the voice of this riding is heard loud and clear” in the national capital, something she will do from the opposition benches after the Liberal Party swept to power in Monday’s federal election. “It’s unfortunate that Canada decided that change was the Liberal Party,” Blaney said election night. “But I am excited to work with my colleagues in Ottawa to make sure the Liberals do exactly what they said and to make sure that those NDP values come through that.” Blaney said the desire for change was strong amongst North IslandPowell River voters and through the hard work of her team, they saw her as the vehicle for that change in this riding. “You know, I think what swayed people was just a lot of hard work,” Blaney said. “We had a lot of volunteers out talking to people on doors; I’ve been talking to a lot of people, doing a lot of meet-and-greets. So, I think that was part of it. “And I think the desire for change was really strong. People want to see more connection to the riding and they want to see those focuses on the good-paying jobs, on making sure we protect our environment and making sure we have sustain-

able health care.” In her victory speech Monday night, Blaney referenced job creation as a priority. “We are also going to be out fighting for good jobs, especially in communities like ours that have been left behind,” she told her supporters. She elaborated on that later: “What we’re really interested in seeing is what kind of business can be developed especially around small business.” She cited positive opportunities like the clean energy sector and manufacturing on a small-business scale. “There are opportunities, but we don’t see the support here that needs to be here for those businesses to grow and increase,” she said. “So my role is going to be go out, understand what the needs are and then fight like heck to make sure the realities come here.” With 40 per cent of the vote – 22,836 votes – Blaney delivered a victory speech at the Campbell River Labour Centre Monday night to a room of supporters happy with a North Island-Powell River victory, ecstatic that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party has been shown the door but subdued about the NDP collapse nationally. “So, what a hard night of mixed emotions,” Blaney said. “You know, I am so excited. I am so excited to work hard for North Island-Powell River. I am so excited that this riding chose positive change. I am so happy. “And I am so incredibly proud of

Tom Mulcair who has led us in tremendous ways and who has shown himself to be an amazing leader. And I am so sorry that there was a mistake in the change choice. That’s just how I’m going to see it.” Blaney was referring to the assessment that Canadian voters wanted change from the Harper Conservatives and decided that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party was the vehicle to provide that change. She would, obviously, have preferred that voters go with the NDP as the engine of change in Canadian politics. Nationally, the Liberals were leading or elected in 184 seats, the Conservatives 99 seats, the NDP 44, the Bloc Quebecois 10 and the Green Party 1. The results swept the Liberals into a majority government and swept the NDP out of the opposition, relegating the Conservatives to that role. The Liberal wave began in Atlantic Canada and swept across the nation with islands of Conservative, NDP and Bloc Quebecois victories here and there in central Canada, a Conservative wall in the southern prairies, Alberta and the Interior of B.C. before washing over a NDP strip on the far west coast, including Vancouver Island. Blaney will be joined on the NDP side of the house by Gord Johns who defeated long time Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan. Duncan chose to run in the newlyformed Courtenay-Alberni riding which was created along with North Island-Powell River. Blaney thanked her family and election team profusely and paid tribute to her competitors, Conservative Laura Smith, Liberal Peter Schwarzhoff and Green candidate

Duncan: All good things come to an end Long-serving Conservative MP goes down to defeat Erin HaluscHak BLACk PRESS

Following a lengthy political career spanning nearly two decades,

Vancouver Island North Conservative MP John Duncan was defeated Monday night by NDP candidate Gord Johns. “Obviously it’s a sad night for a lot of my friends, my colleagues. This was not the result I was anticipating at all,” he noted during a concession speech in the newly-created Courtenay-Alberni riding.

Duncan noted he is most disappointed that his fellow Conservative candidates which he was mentoring on Vancouver Island did not succeed. “It’s kind of tough … it’s kind of tough, yes. I know that everyone worked as hard they could and I actually thought we had a good message.” He a d m itte d t he

national campaign dictated voters, and added “there’s no way around it. That’s what happens.” “And obviously on this occasion, that’s what happened big time.” Appointed in 2010 as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, Duncan said his most proud moment came in the appointment, particu-

larly in nation building. He added he never stopped caring and working for the community and the greater Island. He said he will spend the next few days clearing out his three offices and preparing for life out of the public eye. “All good things do come to an end at some point.”

RCMP officers Taser woman attempting to kill herself

www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

AlistAir tAylor CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Campbell River RCMP officers had to intervene with a conducted energy weapon, or Taser, to prevent a woman from killing herself with a knife early this morning. At 2:20 a.m. today, Campbell River RCMP responded to a call to assist BC Ambulance Service Paramedics at a residence on the Island

Highway. When they got there, police found a suicidal woman holding a knife and making threats to harm herself, said Cpl Gord Hay of the Campbell River RCMP. During their attempts to deescalate the situation, the officers made multiple requests for the woman to drop the knife, which she ignored. When the woman began to “actively harm

herself,” Hay said, an officer on scene deployed a conducted energy weapon (CEW), which caused the woman to drop the knife, allowing officers to safely apprehend her under the Mental Health Act. She was subsequently taken to the Campbell River General Hospital for medical care. The woman did not suffer any injuries as a result of the officers’

physical intervention, Hay said, but was treated for non-life-threatening, self-inflicted injuries. “Sadly, our officers encounter situations like this from time to time, calling on them to use multiple skills in their efforts to end them in a safe manner,” Cpl. Hay said. “It’s fortunate that she is now receiving the medical care she requires, and we wish her well in her recovery.”

Campbell River RCMP are advising businesses to be aware of an office supply scam that has been reported in our area. Typical products used in this type of scam include paper, ink toner, first aid kits, light bulbs, paper rolls for debit and credit machines and various commonly-used office supplies, Cpl. Gord Hay said. This scam involves one or more unsolicited phone calls to a targeted business. The goal of the first call is to gather information on your company, such as your name, names of your colleagues, a corporate mailing address or type of office equipment used. A second or third phone call is placed to a colleague and the caller uses the acquired information to imply an existing business relationship. Thus, your colleague is misled and then is drawn into agreeing to accept shipment of supplies that were never ordered in the first place (this is referred to as an “assumed sale” scam). “When the supplies are delivered, you realize that they are not what you thought you were getting – they are of poor quality and cost as much as 10 times above the market rate,” Cpl. Hay said. “If you try to

Logger Mike shows his age Kristen Douglas

Campbell RiveR miRRoR

“Logger Mike has some issues.” That was the sentiment from Sandra Allen of the Shoreline Arts Society the driving force behind a replacement for the iconic Logger Mike statue in Tyee Plaza. The long-time fixture in the community is showing his age and Shoreline Arts is working with the city to replace old Mike with a new one next year. The plan is to take Logger Mike down from his spar pole next June and truck him to Frank James Park where a carver will make a duplicate. Both the old and new Mikes would then be paraded through the city on Canada Day. Shoreline has estimated the total cost of the project to be $17,100. Don Daniels, president of the Shoreline Arts

A proposal has been put forward to replace Logger Mike – but with a replica.

who is the best to do the duplicate of Logger Mike and we do have the support of the local wood companies, so it’s all coming together.” Coun. Ron Kerr said while he appreciates there’s support from the carvers, he wondered whether it would be more effective to use material that would require less maintenance. He also suggested moving Logger Mike from his pole. “Just to throw a wrench in,” Kerr said. “It’s really poor for photo ops. It’s hard to get a picture of yourself with Logger Mike. Today, people want to take pictures of themselves with the icons so just throwing the idea out – it might be an idea to craft something that’s ground level so you can get those photo ops and something up the pole that’s more durable.” But Coun. Marlene Wright wasn’t too keen on that idea. “I’m pleased with our big picture thinking (but) I would like to see it in wood, because logging is a big part of our history,” she said. Mayor Andy Adams said he could see both points of view. “Logger Mike is an iconic symbol and tugs on the heart strings of those in the logging and forest industries,” Adams said. “I appreciate the comments of Councillor Kerr. I think there’s room for both.” Coun. Larry Samson suggested council ask for a report from city staff – which in the end was approved by council – detailing options for a new Logger Mike. “I do think we need something from staff,”

Samson said. “And just for the record, before we go on, I’m opposed to an alternate, plastic Logger Mike.” The old logger has quite a history in Campbell River. The landmark, which was carved by Dean Lemke, appeared in downtown Campbell River in the summer of 1984 as part of a downtown revitalization project. Since then, Logger Mike has been taken down for repairs several times. The most recent case was in February, 2008 when he was taken down for restoration purposes and replacement of his spar pole. Logger Mike reappeared in October, 2009 next to a brand-new Spirit Square after a nearly two-year hiatus from his spot at Tyee Plaza. Prior to that, Mike was taken down for an outfitting of rope, bolts and support brackets in 1999 and in 2005, for repairs. The iconic Campbell River figure pays tribute to the industry that helped carve out the community and he is outfitted in a Santa suit each year at Christmastime. It was during such outfittings that the city became aware of Logger Mike’s struggles. “Logger Mike is getting old and as we go up and put the Santa suit on yearly, we’re noticing more and more damage,” said Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation, and culture, during a council meeting in January. “We contacted the Shoreline Arts to see if they would be interested in carving a new one.”

Council supports Sportsplex depot KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

City council wants to make the recycling bins at the Sportsplex a permanent fixture. The Comox Strathcona Solid Waste board, which is under the umbrella of the Comox Valley Regional District, has discussed keeping the depot in place for the foreseeable future but has not committed to keeping the Sportsplex as a permanent depot location. At Monday’s council meeting, however, councillors voted to support the Sportsplex site as the recycling service centre for south Campbell River. Amber Zirnhelt, the city’s manager of community planning and development services, said the city has few options for such a facility at the southern end of town. “As i d e f r o m t h e Sportsplex, the city has limited property available that would meet the needs of a recycling centre – being central, visible and easily accessible to the public,” Zirnhelt said. “The majority of the city’s properties

in the south of Campbell River are located along the waterfront or are parks that would not be desirable locations for a recycling centre.” The solid waste board, which is made up of Campbell River and Comox Valley councillors, at its Sept. 17 meeting, discussed keeping the Sportsplex location open to serve those residents who do not have access to curbside recycling. At that time, the board recommended the Sportsplex recycling centre be improved with appropriate fencing and signage, Zirnhelt said. City staff recommended council make a request to the solid waste service that the city be consulted on the development “of the screening and maintenance plan for the Sportsplex location.” Staff were also recommending that council request artistic antigraffiti wraps, similar to those the city has been applying to utility boxes, be installed on the bins. But Coun. Larry Samson, who made the motion to support the recycling location, intentionally left that part out.

“There’s quite a history of arson and vandalism of the bins,” Samson said. “Rather than say ‘has to be wrapped,’ I’d like to see the city and regional district staff come back with different options.” The issue of vandalism, as well as misuse of the facility, was one of the main reasons the fate of the recycling bins at both the Sportsplex and Strathcona Gardens have been up for discussion by the solid waste board in the last couple of years. Both have been on the chopping block on the recommendation of solid waste staff, but have been saved by the elected officials from both the Comox Valley and Strathcona regional districts that sit on the solid waste board. Bins at Strathcona Gardens were slated by staff to be closed effective Nov. 31 due to the $36,000 that is spent annually to remedy the abuse of the depot. Jesse Lee, manager of the Comox Strathcona Waste Management operations, said waste is frequently left at the

The board, however, at its Sept. 17 meeting overwhelmingly supported keeping both recycling depots open until it can establish a Multi-Material BC (MMBC) depot at the south end of the city. Our View

Passing of a political era on North Island

Mantle handed to Rachel Blaney

We also congratulate rookie MP Rachel Blaney. She brings a new face to North Island politics, returning this riding to its traditional political roots with the NDP. The job won’t be easy for her as her party resumes its traditional place in the Canadian political spectrum – third behind the alternating Liberals and Conservatives. There must have been brief hope in her camp at the beginning of the campaign that Blaney may have been in government but it was not to be. While we’re at it, let us all congratulate the unsuccessful North Island-Powell River candidates – Laura Smith (Conservative), Peter Schwarzhoff (Liberal) and Brenda Sayers (Green) – on a civil and heartfelt campaign. Thanks to you for your willingness to stand and serve your region.

Is the Liberal wave such a surprise really? While the polls slowly shifted towards the Liberals in the lead up to the election, it was still pretty much agreed that no party would hold enough seats after the votes were tallied to form a majority government in Ottawa. The discussion had become, “will the parties be able to work together and actually govern?” instead of, “whose policies are we going to be following next?” But when the numbers started coming in, the Maritimes turned red, and that trend continued into (at least southern) Quebec – over 50 per cent of voters in that province voted Liberal – the sea change was well and truly upon us as a nation. By the time the polls closed in B.C., the Liberals already knew they’d be forming the next government. Many were surprised the tide had swung so far to the left so quickly in our great nation. Personally, I’m kind of surprised that people are surprised.

The North Island said goodbye to John Duncan some months ago when he decided to stand for election in the newly-created riding of CourtenayAlberni which was carved off of the Vancouver Island North riding he held since 1993 with one interruption. But on Monday night, North Island voters said a final goodbye as the voters of Courtenay-Alberni rejected him along with a score of other Conservative candidates caught up in the anything-but-Harper movement that swept the Liberal Party to a majority government. Since 1993, Duncan’s name has been on the ballot in the North Island, coming to the fore as part of the initial Reform Party wave. He morphed with We say: Former the rest of the Reform MP chose to run movement into the Conservative Party when in CourtenayReform and Progressive Alberni riding Conservatives merged into the vehicle for political right of the spectrum. Regardless of his politics, Duncan deserves thanks for his two decades of service. It is a significant political accomplishment to have held onto a seat for so long. Many would offer the opinion that he didn’t do enough to earn the seat but his support was obviously strong enough to get him re-elected time and again. Politicians are viewed with a jaundiced eye by the public these days but most of them are well-meaning individuals who seek to serve their communities. Duncan was one of those types of politicians. He never seemed driven to climb the ladder in the Conservative Party, hot after cabinet posts. His record would suggest his goal was always to serve the voters of northern Vancouver Island. He has been a political fixture in this region for a long time but, as he said, all good things must come to an end. Good for him personally, that is, he and his party have to answer politically for their record. But Duncan’s legacy is one of service, good yeomanship, a soldier serving his party and constituents to the best of his ability. Thank you John for those years of service.

When Stephen Harper and his fellow Conservatives started encouraging Canadians to be skeptical of each others’ motives, when they promoted mistrust, when they advocated xenophobia, it turned people off. Imagine that. We don’t want to hate each other? We don’t want to be told that we should? Now we see, though. Now we see if the Liberals will stand by what they said they stand for. Now we see if they were for real about infrastructure spending, electoral reform and strengthening the middle class. They have no reason to keep those promises, now that they have a majority, unless they really meant them. They could just force through their ideas without enough people around to override them – like the Conservatives did. Let’s say I’m “cautiously optimistic” about what just happened. Or maybe, “hopeful,” is a better word.

r u Campbell River landfill o g n i t a br e l e c e r ’ e y W r a s r e v i fees expected to go up nn A3x14

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) board is scheduled to adopt new fees for dumping certain materials at the Campbell River landfill. The new fee structure will be before the board at its Thursday, Nov. 5 meeting. If passed, effective Jan. 1, 2016, wood waste that can be diverted from the landfill (such as painted or stained wood, pallets, particle board, plywood and raw dimensional lumber) will no longer be classified as C&D (construction and demolition) and will remain at $120 per tonne rate. Wood waste classified as garbage (such as creosote timbers, wood painted with lead-based paint, laminated furniture and cupboards) will be charged $130 per

tonne. The solid waste board also recently recommended a fee increase for drywall (gypsum), to cover the cost of hauling the product to New West Gypsum – a Greater Vancouver area processor – for recycling into new drywall products. The cost to drop off drywall will be $225 per tonne effective Jan. 1, 2016. Furthermore, to comply with Worksafe BC guidelines, the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres are no longer accepting drywall containing asbestos. The solid waste service requires all haulers of drywall to complete a ‘waste disposal’ application prior to dropping off the material at the landfills.

To download and complete the application, visit www.cswm. ca/diversion The ‘MSW-mixed with recyclables’ rate will be applied when haulers cross the scale with loads of recyclables mixed with MSW (municipal solid waste) or construction and demolition. T he ‘M S W- m i xe d with recyclables’ rate is scheduled to increase on Jan. 1, 2016 to $275 per tonne. As a reminder, municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris will also increase from $120 per tonne to $130 per tonne on Jan. 1, 2016. A Sit to Stand trainer uses a counter-weight mechanism to provide a safe and effective way to strengthen weight bearing muscles and increase standing stability and endurance. It is used by therapists in a number of applications including post-surgical orthopaedic, cardiac rehabilitation and patients that have had a lengthy illness and have not stood on their own for an extended period of time. The Sit to Stand trainer allows staff to safely assist patients, reducing work-place injuries, and, in addition, the mobility of this equipment allows it to be used anywhere in Campbell River Hospital, from the gym in rehabilitation to the Intensive Care Unit. For 20 years the Campbell River Italian Cultural Society has hosted an amazingly fun and delicious family picnic at Miracle Beach Provincial Park, complete with homemade sausages and spaghetti, raising more than $21,000. To support the doctors, nurses and other key members of the local healthcare team, donations can be made by donating online at crhospitalfoundation.ca or by calling 250-850-2418.

Past President of BC Nature, John Neville, presents an audio-visual presentation this Saturday at the Museum at Campbell River. The presentation, entitled Our Wonderful West Coast Birds – Come Listen and Look, takes placed from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and includes sounds, descriptions and behaviours of Bald Eagles, Black Oystercatcher, Fox Sparrow and Anna’s Hummingbird to name a few. “I’m going to exhibit the biodiversity of the birds of our West Coast through the seasons using my own sound recordings and local photographers,” Neville says. Neville is a world renowned bird song recorder and brings his enthusiasm for the topic based on a lifelong interest in birds. www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

In 2005, the International Year of the Veteran, the late Frances Keen, director of Island Voices Choir, had a vision – to interweave moving music with the words of poets, in order to pay tribute to sacrifices made in war. Since then, every two or three years, the choir has maintained the tradition by presenting Voices in Remembrance: Songs and Readings. At planning meetings last spring, the choir discussed ways to make the event even more meaningful, especially to young people. As a result, this year Island Voices will be joined by choirs of young people, Cantiamo Chamber Ensemble in Courtenay and the Campbell River Children’s Choir. But more important than the ages of the participants, was a desire to make the content of the readings more local,

and more personal. The search began, with organizers searching through archives, scouring museums, obtaining submissions from local veterans, wives, and family members, and reading through hundreds of letters and diaries online. “It has been a tremendous learning experi-

ence says singer JoAnne Preston. “I have had the honour of interviewing a 94-year-old veteran, reading the blog of a wife left at home, reading letters and diaries written up to 100 years ago. There have often been tears in my eyes, such as when I read the letter of a soldier who

Above: Storm goaltender Billy Gorn gets help from defender Joe Gage (#7) and forward Colin Blake in defending a potential shot from the point during Sunday’s VIJHL game against Peninsula Panthers. The Storm won 6-2, breaking a twogame losing streak. Below: Michael Holub slides into the Panthers goaltender squeezing the puck under him for a goal.

Storm get back to winning ways G oi ng i nto Su n day’s game at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena, the Campbell River Storm were not playing their best hockey. They had already dropped two road games on the weekend, 3-2 to the Peninsula Panthers and 4-2 to the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. With the recent unpredictable play from the first place Storm, Head Coach Lee Stone, when asked how his team would play said, “I’ll let you know after the first period.” It didn’t take long to get the answer. The Storm would open the scoring against the Panthers just 4 minutes into the return match. Gage Colpron would score his 15th goal of the season on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play with newcomer Dylan McCann.

Less than two minutes later, Michal Holub would get his first of the season from Kobe Oishi. Holub joined the club last week from the Melville Millionaires of the SJHL; the big forward has experience in the WHL, playing 87 games between the Seattle Thunderbirds and Lethbridge Hurricanes. At the midpoint of the first period, Campbell River would have a 3-0

lead, when Colin Blake set up McCann who made no mistake. It was the club’s fourth shorthanded marker of the season. By period’s end the home crowd would watch their team skate to an impressive 5-0 lead. The other goals came from Holub with his second and Darryl Senholt, whose point blast deflected off Shawn Parkinson’s trapper and in. Peninsula would get

two goals in the second but the Storm never let them back into the game. There was just one goal in the third period coming from Josh Coblenz, the game’s first star. In the former Campbell River Tyee’s first game back, after spending three games with the BCHL Powell River Kings, he accounted for three points. Stone was pleased with his team’s response,”

great first period, that’s what we were looking for. We told them to go out, have fun and make plays with the puck. It’s amazing what happens when we skate and our skills show. That’s exactly how we want to play the game.” The Storm have just one game this coming weekend, a home grudge match with the second place Nanaimo Buccaneers on Friday.

Power was on display this weekend by the members of Team Dog Powerlifting representing Campbell River Special Olympics at the BC Powerlifting Fall Classic held Oct. 17 in Abbotsford. Mickie Hildebrandt, competing for the first time, earned gold and established a new personal best record with a deadlift of 95 kgs. He was cheered on by both friends and family and supported by his teammates Tye Cranton and Callum Maclagan who helped Hildebrandt deal with the nerves of a new competitor. They fed off each others’ energy as Cranton and Maclagan both smashed previous personal best lifts. In the deadlift, Cranton pulled 137.5 lbs off the floor and Maclagan benched 137.5 lb to become the youngest Special Olympic athlete in Canada to bench over 300 lbs. “I have never been prouder as a coach than I am right now,” coach George Maclagan said. “Mickie, Tye and Callum represented Campbell River so well at this meet. They help each other and cheer every athlete at the tournament displaying a strong work ethic that is tempered with humility and good sportsmanship. They are as proud of their competitors as they are of themselves. It is a privilege to coach such fine men who work so hard at West Coast Muscle and Fitness to get better in such a physically and mentally demanding sport.” And the work doesn’t end for this group. Cranton and Maclagan have been nominated to be part of the team that will represent Canada at the upcoming Commonwealth Powerlifting Federation Tournament to be held at the Olympic Oval at Richmond, B.C. Nov. 30 to Dec. 5.

District’s first soccer jamboree scores Last week, 270 students from eight schools converged on Ripple Rock Elementary to take part in the first annual School District Soccer Jamboree. Students ranged from grades 3 to 5 (above) and represented a variety of skill levels; however, the only pre-requisites were

sportsmanship and having fun. It wasn’t school vs school but colour vs colour. Students from each school were distributed over 11 coloured teams. The school district provided the funding that ensured each participant received a keeper shirt. Organized by Ripple

Rock teacher Garth Douglas, the idea was to create an inter-school activity without the competitiveness. Student played five games each throughout the day. Many parent volunteers and personnel from the various schools helped make this a fun and successful event.
