Many of the individuals allegedly fooled by Quinnell are reportedly embarrassed by the incidents. Crown counsel has issued a publication ban against reporting the victims’ names when the matter is disposed of in court. Quinnell remains in custody and is next due in court Dec. 3 for a pre-sentence report. A psychiatric and/or psychological report has also been ordered.

Green Party’s Thomas Cheney received 2,386 votes, Libertarian Alexander Johnson got 416 votes and Marxist-Leninist candidate Dorothy-Jean O’Donnell received 82 votes. Students went with Strahl, too

hilliwack students chose Mark Strahl and the Conservative Party last week in a mock election exercise across the city that was designed to give youth early exposure to the voting process. But it was victory by a much closer margin than the actual federal election results. Strahl won narrowly—1,229 votes to Liberal Louis De Jaeger’s 1,124 tally according to the local outcome of the CIVIX Student Vote project. And the Greens topped the NDP in student polls, with Thomas Cheney edging past Seonaigh MacPherson by three votes (461 and 458 respectively). The Chilliwack-Hope riding included 30 schools including elementary, middle, secondary, and private educational institutions. Mount Cheam Christian school had the highest voter turnout with 100 per cent of the 200 requested ballots used, along with Yarrow elementary which cast 60 of 60 votes.

All public middle and secondary schools elected De Jaeger and his Liberal party ranging from a 34 per cent vote at A.D. Rundle to 47 per cent at Chilliwack Middle. But stronger loyalties were found in private schools with students from John Calvin and Mount Cheam Christian choosing Strahl by over 90 per cent.

Voter turnout a positive sign

he longest federal election in Canada’s history is behind us, mercifully, and voters picked change. What that means for us here in Chilliwack-Hope is hard to say. For the first time in a decade, the Member of Parliament we send to Ottawa is not part of government. Mark Strahl’s victory amid a Liberal surge is reminiscent of the early days of Chuck Strahl’s career in opposition. The role of official opposition is imporant in the Canadian system to hold the government’s feet to the fire, and we hope to see just that in the coming months and years. But what was most heartening to see on Monday was voter turnout. More than 50,000 residents, higher than 70 per cent, of the 71,703 registered voters in Chilliwack-Hope cast a ballot. Sure, one could see that cup as half empty as 30 per cent or more than 20,000 people didn’t vote, but 70 per cent voter turnout is remarkable. It’s the highest we’ve seen in the last 20 years since Chuck Strahl was first elected. Increased use of social media, broad-based campaigns to get out the vote to various otherwise disenfranchised groups may have helped. Whatever the reason for the higher participation, there is more to do, but the engagement seen in Monday’s turnout bodes well for the future.

Niqab was the big turning point

he longest election in Canadian history has thankfully come to a close. From the very beginning a large majority of Canadians indicated that they wanted a change in government. The only question was, would anti-Conservative voters coalesce around a single alternative party. We now definitively have the answer to that question. For a long time in this campaign, it looked like Quebec would stick with the NDP while anti-Conservative voters outside Quebec would turn to the Liberals. Stephen Harper was banking on this outcome. For the Conservatives to win again, they needed the NDP and the Liberals to split the vote pretty evenly. So what happened? There were of course many twists and turns along the way, and it is difficult to identify a single turning point but one issue does stand out above all others: the niqab. The issue was thrust into the campaign when a court ruled (again) that the government’s attempt to ban the niqab at citizenship ceremonies was contrary to the Citizenship Act.

HAMISH TELFORD Be Our Guest Stephen Harper seemed to believe that the court had handed him a winning political issue, and he opted to double-down on the niqab ban. Polls suggested that the ban was popular with Canadians, most especially in Quebec. Stephen Harper presumably calculated that the NDP and the Liberals would oppose the ban and thereby put themselves offside with public opinion. This is the very definition of wedge politics. Justin Trudeau and Tom Mulcair did indeed oppose the ban, but unfortunately for Stephen Harper the law of unintended consequences took over. When Tom Mulcair defended a woman’s right to wear a niqab in citizenship ceremonies, the NDP’s support in Quebec instantly plummeted. The Liberals had nothing to lose in Quebec so their opposition to the ban didn’t cost them anything. When the NDP’s support in Quebec

collapsed their national polling numbers also took a major hit. Suddenly, by default, the Liberal Party was the only choice for voters who wanted to replace Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. By this time in the campaign, Justin Trudeau had laid to rest doubts about his readiness to govern and allowed Canadians to come to him. And ironically Quebecers rushed to Justin Trudeau as well when they realized that the Liberals were now the best option for defeating the Conservatives, evenly though polls suggested that they didn’t agree with his position on the niqab. The lesson here is that wedge politics is kind of like making bombs in your garage—sometimes they blow up on you. Stephen Harper thought he had a winning issue with the niqab ban, but ultimately he just knocked the NDP out of the game and allowed the Liberals to win it all. In fact, much of the antipathy for Stephen Harper across the country stemmed from his style of politics, particularly his penchant for highly divisive wedge politics. The niqab issue not only cost Stephen Harper the election, it may have

done long-term damage to the Conservative Party. Almost alone among conservative parties in the world, the Conservative Party of Canada under Stephen Harper cultivated a strong relationship with new Canadians over the last 10 years. Indeed, the support from new Canadians put the Conservatives over the top in the 2011 election. But in this election the niqab issue—along with the refugee crisis, immigration generally, and Bill C-24 – led many new Canadians to abandon the Conservative Party. In Brampton, Ontario, for example the Liberals took all five seats. Here in B.C., the Liberals similarly took all but one of the seats in Surrey. Today the Conservative Party is back where it started 10 years ago. It is mostly a party of the prairies with a smattering of support in a few rural ridings in Ontario. But Canada is a highly urban country. The future of the Conservative Party in the post-Harper era is now very unclear. ◗ Hamish Telford is a Department Head, Associate Professor of political science at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Soldout heritage tour had folks coming from far and wide Editor: The Heritage Chilliwack Society’s first Heritage Tour on Saturday, Oct. 17 was a huge hit. Balmy fall weather combined with the opportunity to get inside six of Chilliwack’s most historic buildings drew a crowd to the grounds of St. Thomas Anglican Church. Several dozen people lined up in the hopes of securing a tour ticket; some travelling from Vancouver and Surrey. Unfortunately the tickets were all sold 10 minutes after the tour’s one o’clock start disappointing many waiting in line. Ticketholders were able to wander through Chilliwack’s Mountain View neighbourhood and explore the inside of heritage buildings, including the Imperial Theatre Building’s residential loft (c.1913), the location where Chilliwack suffragettes met in 1915 and Stonehurst, the opulent mansion built by Chilliwack entrepreneur Chauncey Eckert and now a municipally designated heritage site. Run entirely by volunteers, the event relied on the dedication of a core of volunteers to ensure the success of the tour. Heritage Chilliwack had up to four volunteers stationed at each site along with the homeowners who were there to answer questions from heritage enthusiasts. “We were overwhelmed with the response Heritage Chilliwack’s Tour & Tapas received from Chilliwack residents and were saddened to turn away people on Saturday however, we capped the ticket sales at 100 as to not overwhelm the heritage property owners on our first tour,” said Laura Reid, a director with Heritage Chilliwack Society. “Due to the success of the event and positive feedback from tour participants and homeowners, we will definitely plan another one next year.” Heritage Chilliwack

Kindness in a sad situation

Unfortunately he did not catch her in time and she was hit by an oncoming vehicle. My son ran out onto the road in the middle of traffic in his panic and hurting state to get his dog. Although the vehicle who hit the dog did not stay behind, we want to thank the very nice man who stopped traffic to help my son and remove his dog from the road. We appreciate it so much as this was so devastating for him. There is still some very thoughtful people out

arly on Sept. 2, 2015, a photograph was taken that arrested our collective attention sparking worldwide sadness, anger, and outrage. While most of us were aware of the fighting and conflicts in the Middle East and other parts of the world, these events aren’t part of our daily experience and were therefore easily set aside in the busyness of life and living. Now there on the front pages of our newspapers or glowing screens of our devices we couldn’t escape the image of a young refugee toddler lying face-down on a Turkish beach; his young life having escaped him. Little Aylan symbolized the desperate attempts of his people to escape the turmoil in Syria and start a new life by finding a new people and a new land to call home. We demanded answers. How could this happen? Who is responsible? In compassion, we expected our leaders and government to act. A righteous indignation rose up from within us demanding our participation and action. What a contrasting reality . . . on one hand we have groups of people committing the vilest of atrocities against their fellow man

You, Me, & a Refuge act out of their own fears and insecurities? On some level we have all been a refugee. Card-carrying refugee status. This relational fear or tension that we all experience creates the environment that allows things like jealousy, envy, strife and prejudice to prevail. Hostility and the persecution of others is our way of protecting ourselves from those we don’t understand or believe will take advantage of us as they don’t have our best interests at heart. This happens not only one on one at the office but between groups, tribes and nations. It’s people being people. It’s schoolyard stuff but as adults, we know it isn’t always outgrown, just perhaps more sophisticated. The answer isn’t found in new political initiatives, a better education, or a redistribution of wealth because the root cause is spiritual. Something has to touch the very heart and soul of man so that he’s changed from the inside out. Something has to immobilize and eradicate the fear that’s in all of us to affect the change

while others out of a sense of justice are moved by mercy to provide, protect, and welcome those who, of no fault of their own, find themselves with no country and no home. By definition a refugee is a person who is outside of their home country of citizenship as a result of a real threat of persecution and being unable to find sanctuary within their country of origin. While most of us born in Canada have never tasted the bitterness of being homeless and without a nation, we all have, on varying levels, experienced what it feels like to be on the outside looking in. Maybe it was when we started a new job or new school. Perhaps it was when we moved into a new neighbourhood where everybody already new everyone. Just being there we knew we were changing things. Our presence would demand a response from all those who were already comfortable in their established relationships and routine. Would they welcome and accept us eliminating our insecurity and fears or would they be indifferent or even hostile towards us as they

necessary to create the peace we all desperately seek. This is at the heart of God’s message to us through the cross. “Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.” (Ephesians 2:16 NLT-SE) Jesus, in the ultimate expression of love, took upon himself the fear, hatred, violence, and sin that was and is in all our hearts and killed it, through His death, on the cross. In one act, He gave to all mankind the solution and ability to know God and to love our neighbor. Through the violence He willingly endured, being murdered on the cross, Jesus made it possible for all of us to live in peace. Being a Christian doesn’t mean that you’re perfect and will always treat people right but it does mean that you’ve found a new home and a new identity. Something has changed on the inside and you know that God has started something good that will increasingly change how you see yourself and the way you relate to the world and the people around you. ◗ Craig Byers is a pastor with Keystone Church.

Weekend split for road Chiefs BY GREG LAYCHAK Chilliwack Times

weekend road trip ended evenly for the Chilliwack Chiefs, with the local team pulling out a 4-2 win over Alberni Valley on Saturday but losing to Nanaimo by the same score and in similar fashion. The Chiefs started with a two-goal lead in Port Alberni with Jesse Lansdell opening up scoring in the game with a power-play goal, followed by team lead-scorer Vimal Sukumaran with his 11th goal of the season. But the Bulldogs scored two on both sides of the second intermission and by 90 seconds into the third frame had tied the match at 2-2. Chiefs defender Connor McCarthy scored the game-winner, his first goal of the season, followed by Lansdell’s empty-net shot with only six seconds remaining in the game to bring the final score to 4-2. Aidan Pelino saved 31 of the 33 shots on his net giving the Oakville native his fifth win this year. But Pelino shared ice time with backup goalie Matteo Esposito the next night when the Chiefs went to Nanaimo after the starter gave up four of the 18 shots from the Clippers

in his 46 minutes in the game. Nanaimo came out with an aggressive threegoal lead starting with Matt Creamer’s goal at the end of the first period. Sheldon Rempal followed with two power-play goals in rapid succession early in the second frame to make it 3-0. Chilliwack couldn’t recover the deficit in the second half of play, despite Jordan Kawaguchi and Kohen Olischefski goals to bring their team within one by the third period mid-point. Rempal sealed the Chiefs’ fate with his hat trick score at under 90 seconds left in the game. As the Times goes to press, the Mainland division leading Wenatchee Wild are scheduled to play in Chilliwack Wednesday night. The last time Wenatchee visited Prospera Centre they beat the Chiefs 4-0 in preseason play. Prior to their Wednesday matchup, the Chiefs were tied with Coquitlam for third in their division with six wins, five losses, a tie and two overtime losses. Compared to last season at this time when they had a 10-4 record, Chilliwack is struggling to generate wins early.

Zweep deal for club T he Chiefs added a defender to their squad last week and traded away forward Thomas Dunleavy to the Brockville Braves for future consideration. Dunleavy, who registered one assist in five games this season with the Chiefs, will now head to the Central Junior A Hockey League team.

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) women’s basketball team beat the Vancouver Island University Mariners 79-62 in exhibition action on Saturday evening at the Envision Athletic Centre, with third-year guard Kaitlyn McDonald contributing heavily to that outcome. The Chilliwack product went 6-for-7 from the three-point line to sink a team-high 18 points. Other local players Shayna Cameron and Kayli Sartori notched 16 and 14 points respectively for UFV. After starting their final day of the PING CCAA Golf National Championships in seventh place, the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) men’s golf team rallied Friday to come out of the tournament with a bronze medal. Playing at their home course, Chilliwack Golf Club, the Cascades men finished with a third place, cumulative threeround total of 873, one stroke better than the Georgian Grizzlies (874). It’s the seventh time in nine years that the UFV golf program has placed at least one team on the podium at CCAA nationals. Leading the way for the Cascades, fourth-year standout Connor O’Dell tied for sixth place at -1 for the tournament, and he earned all-star honours as a top-six finisher. Chilliwack native Connor McLellan finished tied for 13th overall at +2 for the tourney, after firing a one-over 73 on Friday. Zach Olson shot a one-under 71 to finish tied for 20th, while Nathan Bahnman (+2 on Friday, +9 for the tourney, T32) and Cody Stewart (even par on Friday, +10 for the tourney, T38) also contributed to the comeback. The Camosun Chargers won the men’s team championship with a cumulative 860 strokes, and the Niagara Knights (868) took second. On the women’s side the Cascades moved up from sixth place going into the final round to a tie for fourth, with 514 strokes over the three rounds. The Humber Hawks (473), UBC Okanagan Heat (481) and Georgian Grizzlies (491) won the women’s team gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively. The 2016 edition of the tournament will be hosted by Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI.

The ideal relative humidity range of a home should be between 40 to 50, according to heating and cooling experts and the Environmental Prevention Agency. Humidity should be even lower in the winter to prevent condensation on windows and other surfaces. Lower relative humidity also reduces the out-gassing of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.

Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure. The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners. Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off. Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter. Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur. ◗ Leaks: Water will take the path of least resistance. When clogged gutters do not allow the water to drain away properly, water will find other ways to the ground. It may work itself right into the walls and ceilings of the home. In addition to damaging walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can promote mold growth. It also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests. ◗ Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely. ◗ Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests. Furthermore, birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can grow unchecked.

Bear in pear tree attracted visitors

bear cub who resided in a pear tree behind McCammon elementary for over a week is now gone and the tree is down. For days the animal sat perched above a trap set by the Conservation Officer Service on the Skwah First Nation residential property near the tree, but by Wednesday the tree was gone as was the bear. The bear attracted many visitors, most taking pictures as they stopped to look. “It’s sad that he’s not with his parents,” said Mitch Florence, a nearby resident. “He’s lost, looking for a home.”

Ways to stay healthy this holiday season

ith the holiday season upon us, many people’s schedules are hectic once again. There are social events and family gatherings to attend, shopping ventures to make, and decorating to be done. While fun, the holiday season can be a time of added pressure, which leads to stress and other unhealthy situations. At a time when you want to be at your best, stress can affect your physical well-being. The American Psychological Association says the hustle and bustle of the holidays has psychological consequences for some people. More people are inclined to feel that their stress increases, rather than decreases, around the holidays. The National Institute of Mental Health says chronic stress can lower immunity and cause excretory, digestive and reproductive systems to stop working properly. Stress also may cause you to eat unhealthy snacks to cope, and that can lead to unwanted weight gain. Stress is not the only potential health hazard that can arise around the holidays. A greater number of parties expose you to an abundance of foods and drinks you may not consume on a regular basis, and that can lead to a lot of mindless eating. Weight gained during this time of year can be difficult to shed come January, when colder temperatures challenge many peoples’ motivation to exercise. Also, social settings put you in close contact with a greater number of people, potentially increasing your exposure to germs. You can still feel your best during the holidays. Follow these tips for maintaining a healthy mind and body. ◗ Get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine can protect you against various strains of the flu. Get a flu shot before the holidays so you are ready for cold and flu season.

◗ Carry disinfecting wipes. Germs can linger on surfaces long after an infected person has come and gone. Studies from researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson have found the flu virus—and even the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA—on airline tray tables. Buses, trains and doors all may be harboring germs. Wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes and allow them to air-dry before touching them. This can help you avoid coming into contact with germs. ◗ Balance your activities. It can be tempting to overbook your schedule with a ton of activities, but this may ultimately prove stressful. Leave days open to relax and do things you want to do, such as viewing Christmas light displays or even just unwinding at home with a good book. Try delegating some tasks to others in the household so you don’t take on too much responsibility. ◗ Keep up an exercise routine. Don’t stray too far from your exercise schedule. You may have to move workout times to free up other time later in the day for shopping or parties. Early morning is a good time to exercise because it gets you moving first thing in the morning and might even encourage you to hit the sack a little earlier each night, ensuring you get all the sleep you need. Exercise also can improve energy levels and relieve stress. ◗ Don’t focus on food. Focus more on enjoyable activities that keep you moving rather than always being seated around the table for a big meal. Save indulgences for one or two treats on the holidays and eat sensibly otherwise. ◗ Talk to someone. If the holidays have you feeling blue, talk to a friend or family member. If you need more professional support, find a social worker or psychologist that can help you work through stress and other feelings.
