ELECTION NIGHT
Newcomer will be MP
Newly elected Liberal MP for PittMeadows Maple Ridge Dan Ruimy reflected on his win Tuesday afternoon as he chatted with The TIMES at Bean Around Books, which he owns. He celebrated his win Monday at his campaign headquarters (inset.)
Dozens of supporters share in Liberal victory. ROXANNE HOOPER rhooper@mrtimes.com
Biting his nails, wiping sweat off his brow, and rubbing his palms together repeatedly, Liberal candidate Dan Ruimy did his best to contain his nervousness as poll numbers trickled in Monday. When all 187 polls were counted, Ruimy was declared the clear victor, and on Tuesday he reported to Elections Canada to officially be declared MP-elect for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge. When the checkmark went up next to his name, and the Maple Ridge entrepreneur was finally declared triumphant, he was hard pressed to contain his excitement. “Tonight. It wasn’t easy,” he said to a group of about 50 supporters crammed into his campaign office on Dewdney Trunk Road to share in the victory. “It was a roller coaster ride. But I don’t think I would have wanted it any other way.” “That first day, I said ‘I’m going to win this riding,’ and I’ve never wavered on that,” Ruimy said.

There’s an obvious buzz in the air as I enter the small coffee shop and bookstore on the Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. Patrons sit comfortably, drinks are being made, and customers peruse the selection of book titles in the back. It’s the day after the 2015 federal election, and I’m at Bean Around Books, a local business whose owner is the new Liberal MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge: Dan Ruimy. “It was an amazing night,” Dan says. “It was dynamic. People honked as they drove by, and it spilled out on to the streets.” The result is a validation of Ruimy’s efforts. He said that when he threw his name in the race as a Liberal, “we knew what our numbers were.” With the riding being a Conservative stronghold, with historically low Liberal numbers, “people would ask me why I was

Mike Murray’s on the job hunt. The Tory hopeful has been the executive assistant to MP Randy Kamp for the past four years. And since he didn’t get elected as the new MP, his search for a new job officially begins this week. First though, he plans to take a trip to France with his wife which she won through a promotion from CTV, and plans to asses his situation upon his return. “I had no Plan B,” he admitted Monday, after losing to Liberal candidate Dan Ruimy. “Who knows, maybe I’ll have the energy four years from now to try it again.” He added he’d still be open to helping out the party where he could. “Obviously, as a family we were really working hard
for this, and it’s difficult to go through, but I just feel a real peace about it,” he said. “Looking around at all the people that have been supportive, it’s been a wonderful experience.” Murray expressed gratitude to his former boss, outgoing Conservative MP, Randy Kamp. “It’s through his encouragement that I got to run, and looked forward to the opportunity when it came,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my time working with Randy, knowing him and Ruth.”
NDP up then out Despite some encouraging numbers early in the evening, it was not to be for local NDP candidate Bob D’Eith. And while he may not have won a seat, there was energy and excitement in the air at NDP candidate Bob D’Eith’s campaign office on election night. Steady claps from the crowd and shouts of “we love you
Bob,” greeted D’Eith as he began to speak. “I want to thank all of you,” he said, thanking all the volunteers and his “amazing staff.” He later wrote on Facebook that he was “humbled by the extraordinary effort that everyone made.”
Tam talks future Green Party candidate Peter Tam thanked his team for 79 days of volunteering, and congratulated Ruimy. “I hope next election Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge can vote for the candidate instead of the party, can vote for a platform instead of voting out someone,” he wrote on Facebook. “Our next campaign starts tomorrow.”
Ranta satisfied Steve Ranta dropped by the Liberal campaign office at the end of the evening to congratulate Dam Ruimy on his victory. “I was happy with the campaign,” he said. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Tory’

Maple Ridge is pulling out of the joint leisure services model it adopted with Pitt Meadows in 1994. The purpose of the agreement was “to achieve economies of scale and a consistent service approach that would benefit taxpayers of both communities” according to a release from the City of Maple Ridge. “This agreement served us well for many years, but a 2014 review identified that the financial benefit flows disproportionately to taxpayers in Pitt Meadows at the expense of taxpayers in Maple Ridge,” it said. Given this reality, and Maple Ridge’s growth, “City council made the decision to transition to an independent model,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read. “This decision aligns with council’s intention to invest in Maple Ridge’s recreation infrastructure. We are working to create an amazing community where sport infrastructure, parks, and arts amenities are enhanced to position this community for the future,” Read elaborated. “I think it’s been a long-time

After the municipal election, there was initiative to take a look at the numbers in greater detail to determine whether the 80-20 split funding model still provided equity to both funding partners. “My understanding was that it was a work in progress,” said Becker. Now, “we will hit the ground running in making decisions on how this will look,” said Kim Grout, chief administrative officer for Pitt Meadows. “We appreciate there are still many questions to be answered, but we will work with Maple Ridge and with stakeholder groups to ensure that there is a seamless transition to our users and citizens.” Maple Ridge agreed. “We expect to continue to work with and alongside Pitt Meadows on future initiatives as they arise,” said Read. “We thank Pitt Meadows for being a part of the joint leisure services over many years and wish them great success in planning their future.”

Maple Ridge intends to terminate its arrangements with Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, and move to those services internally. “It’s something we moved forward on Monday and will be voting on Tuesday,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read. “That’s the recommendation that’s coming from staff, specifically our new economic development manager.” The decision, she explained, stems from the fact that “what we’re ultimately getting in terms of marketing and advertisement expenses, is a lot of that goes to payroll, and we think that we can do more.” Read isn’t concerned about the City shooting itself in the foot, tourism-wise. “Not at all,” she said. “We have really amazing natural aspects in our community, and we should be leveraging ten times beyond what we’re doing right now. Not only do we want to create new business, we want to be n attractive community for people to live in and visit.”

Grits must govern for all
I
t was often said of the Harper Conservatives that they only won power from a slice of the Canadian population. Fewer than 40 per cent of Canadians typically marked a ballot for a Tory, yet they hung on for almost 10 years – minority and majority. The shoe is on the other foot now. Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have won a strong majority government, tearing away ridings that had long been seen as Conservative and NDP strongholds. But they, too, did it on the basis of a little less than 40 per cent of the votes cast. The same warning we’ve given the Tories through the years applies: Every government has a responsibility to govern for all Canadians. That includes the ones who didn’t vote for them, who campaigned against them, who donated to the other guys. It includes the people who didn’t even bother to vote – they are just as much citizens as those of us who cast a ballot. And of course, we are adding new Canadians, by birth and by choice, every day. They will also have a hand in the future we are building. The next four years are likely to be somewhat turbulent. The Conservatives, like many parties entering the late part of their mandate, had accomplished many of their key goals some time ago, and had presented few sweeping pieces of legislation in recent years. There has been a lot of pent-up desire for change in Canada, and voters certainly called for change – in many ways this election was a fight between the Liberals and the NDP to see who could represent that change. Trudeau is coming to office with a long list of election promises, from legalized marijuana to military procurement, electoral reform to refugees. Change can be scary. The Liberals now taking their seats need to remember that, and to take care that the changes they make will be made with wisdom. Those opposing them need to remember that we are not on opposite sides of a war, but fellow rowers, pulling together in the same boat.

And, yes, there will be some folks still crying today. For some people, that trip to the dentist didn’t end well. For instance, racists and Islamaphobes who have been watching too many episodes of Homeland are right now cowering in corners, in deathly fear that the next niqab coming around the corner isn’t hiding an alluring smile, but a terrorist’s sneer. They never seem to think about how much danger might be lurking in the briefcase being carried by the Bay Street suit coming from the other direction. Although the dentist’s visit this morning appears to have been a total success, now that the numbness is beginning to fade, I can’t say that I’m equally pleased with last night’s election results. It was a good result. It was a great result. But it wasn’t a perfect result. To me, a perfect election ends with the beginning of a minority government. Minorities are under-rated in this country.
But that’s only because the politicians have convinced the masses that they should be allowed to be lazy. Minorities require our parliamentarians to work harder. They can’t just go ahead and do what they want and claim that they have a mandate. For one thing, majorities – like Justin’s freshly minted one – are rarely elected by a majority of Canadians, and even still, different Canadians will have cast their ballots for different reasons. We don’t all think alike, and it is disingenuous for leaders to assume that they have all the answers that we all want. Refreshingly, Justin said as much in his amazingly gracious acceptance speech. It’s an unusually good start for a majority. Let’s hope he makes this trip to the dentist a memorable one – for only good reasons. Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online this week at mrtimes.com

How to help at tips of fingers Dear Editor, The images of fleeing humanity from the cruelty and savagery of war, remind us of the security and freedom we are blessed with, in our Canada. The use of guns and intimidation to cower people into submission are barbaric and vicious. We cringe at the thought of suffering and feel the agony of those displaced from home, security, and family. Death and struggle to live are day-to-day realities.
When countries become victims of the onslaught of climate’s fury and destruction, many of us send support through humanitarian societies who are there to help reached those affected by the unfortunate barrage of nature. In time of war, governmental intervention and policies take time to be implemented while urgent needs are pressing. Humanitarian and charitable societies are there to meet the day to day needs of the casualties of war.
Essentials such as food and clothing, medicine and housing are immediate necessities. In our present technology, information as to the groups and organizations that take on this compelling humanitarian call is available, literally, at our fingertips. The Red Cross, your church, the UN and even schools are sources of information. “Not for ourselves alone are we born.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero Nita Spittel, Maple Ridge
Traveller loves ‘beautiful’ Canada Dear Editor, I recently drove across Canada and what a beautiful country it is. But, what impressed me more than its natural beauty, was its citizens. Like the fellow who was riding his bike with his dog in tow, to raise awareness about
homelessness and the need for affordable housing in Canada. Or the others who were running across this great land to raise awareness for their particular health concerns. I thought to myself, “This is what truly makes our country great; its caring and compassionate citizens.”
Facebook feedback
Many readers followed Monday night’s local election results on The TIMES Facebook page, offering commentary as it unfolded.
“Very close! Proud to volunteer for the brief few hours I could. Well done Team D’Eith.” – Becky Bee “I look forward to seeing what Dan can bring to the table. I’ve had a few short conversations with him at his tea shop, and he seems genuinely kind, articulate, and well rounded. I didn’t vote Liberal, but I am happy with our riding outcome. Best wishes Dan!” – Candice Brown “Congrats to all those who ran in our riding and to our new MP! And thank you to everyone who got out & voted, regardless of who you voted for…” – Kiirsti Owen “I voted for the first time… thanks to Stephen Harper. I really enjoyed voting AGAINST him. Yay Liberals!” – Raina Lynn “Good turnout.” – Chris Laing “Thank you Bob for working so hard and making us proud!!” – Barb Alexander “Congratulations to a hard working fellow.” – Joe Robinsmith “A shocking yet amazing result! Where did all of the Liberals come from? I don’t believe the Liberal Party has come close to winning in this riding for many, many years. Congratulations Mr Ruimy and congratulations Mr. D’Eith for running a great campaign. I was proud to vote for you.” – Rachael Perry

I love Canada, and I love its people who take time out of their lives to help others. This is what makes us a great country, and we must continue this tradition of being a loving and caring country; helping those in their time of need. Long live Canada! John E. McKernzie, Maple Ridge
Justice for Buttons
Dear Editor, I was devastated to read about Buttons [Therapy dog put down after attack, Oct. 1, TIMES}. I am now holding my precious Australian terrier close to me. I am praying that Pitt Meadows RCMP can come up with some sort of charges against the owners of the Bullmastiff because the owners must be held accountable for letting their vicious beast go off-leash. Arlene Smith, Maple Ridge
Niqab at swearing-in opens ‘can of worms’ Dear Editor, Allowing the Niqab in a swearing in ceremony is both anti-Canadian and anti-Muslim. This precedent will unleash more harm than good. I suggest reading about the history of the Niquab. It would be a real eye-opener to the blind lawmakers who have allowed this travesty. I am constantly being bombarded with anti-Muslim sentiment now, through unwanted emails that I rightly trash. Muslims I have met are wonderful people trying to live out their lives in the pax Canada most of us love. Now that misguided lady in my mind has been permitted to open a can of worms. Her reasons may be religious in her mind but to me all she has done is cover up her face in Canada, which to me is a country where all should be open faced as possible in our allegiance to it. The so-called lawmakers who hid behind legal words, failed to use their brains and heart. I think they and their wives should be made to wear sackcloth covering their faces for the shame they’ve created. Barry Bentley, Maple Ridge

With a goal to raise $1.4 million this year alone, Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation made a huge leap towards achieving that target on Saturday night with their soldout Arabian Nights Gala. “The event was sold out with a waiting list – we couldn’t fit another table or even a chair in the room” at Meadow Gardens Golf Course Saturday night,

said Laura Butler, development officer for the foundation. “The Arabian Nights gala was our most successful event to date – preliminary totals are at $236,000!” she added, wearing a huge smile. The live auction alone netted $20,200, which was then matched by an anonymous donor. The foundation was grateful for the “very generous support” and all the other contributions that were made towards and at the 27th annual gala, said foundation chair and emcee Ron Antalek.

‘Haunted circus’ set up in fairgrounds barn Three groups benefit from an annual spookfest next to Planet Ice.
Students from every secondary school in School District 42 are involved, many of whom will provide scares as live actors. Last year, 61 local high school kids collectively accumulated 1,400 hours of community work towards their graduation. Bates elaborated that the idea of this year’s Ghost Ridge comes from the book, The Night Circus. “It’s loosely based on that book and it’s what happens to the circus characters between dusk and dawn,” Bates said. “It takes you through numerous big tops and all the freaky characters who are involved with a circus freak show.” Albion Fairgrounds is located at 23448 105 Ave. Visit Ghost Ridge online at ghostridge.ca, or on its Facebook page.
TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com
A
“sinister” force has swept over a barn that was home to more than 100 dairy cows during July’s Country Fest at Albion Fairgrounds. And it’s all in good fun. Ghost Ridge returns to the fairgrounds on Friday and continues Oct. 24 and 25, and Oct 28 to 30. Hours are 6 to 9 p.m. each of the days. For $8 per entry, visitors can tour a barn that promises to offer plenty of chills and thrills. There will also be a “family friendly” hour from 5 to 6 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25, designed for younger kids – or those who don’t like things that “jump” in the night – so they can have the opportunity to stroll through the haunted facility with the lights on. Ghost Ridge has raised $250,000 for an array of non profits in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows over the past 11 years. “It’s a huge commitment and lot of work for the groups involved, but it’s lots of fun and raises money for their causes,” said Ghost Ridge committee member Lorraine Bates.

on-profit groups participating in this year’s Ghost Ridge include the Ridge Meadows Bruins Rugby Club, Inritius Alliance LARP (Live Action Role Playing) group, and Maple Ridge Country Fest.
The theme is Cirque De La Lune, and the barn will be filled with props, the bulk of which were constructed by lead hammer Les Granholm. Les’s wife Joan is Ghost Ridge’s creative director, with assistance from Carla Cusano.

Raise a glass – or beer stein – to this year’s Oktoberfest. Ridge Meadows Hospice Society is hosting a fundraising event this Friday, complete with awards for best German garb, a traditional beer stein holding competition, and a live performance by Franzl & his Squeezebox. “He’s very energetic and always gets in amongst the crowd,” hospice executive director Mark Vosper said of the accordion-playing performer. “He gets everyone involved. Everyone will be up and dancing. His disclaimer is: Not responsible for lost spouses or next-day headaches.” For the physically strong in attendance, the beer stein holding competition is won by whoever can hold a glass – filled to the brim with beer – the longest with an outstretched arm. Men are also encouraged to strap on a pair of lederhosen and woman can show off their best Oktoberfest dresses, with prizes for best dressed of both genders. And a traditional German dinner will be served. On a more serious note, hospice fundraising campaigner Ian Bos will be presenting from

For a few years, the Rotary Club hosted Oktoberfest. This year, Ridge Meadows Hospice, headed up by Mark Vosper (right), has taken over. 7:40 to 8 p.m. on the importance of services for people in the final stages of life. Bos, whose father died of cancer last year at the age of 68, has walked around 6,000 kilometres across Canada to raise awareness for the importance of palliative care. He began this summer in Nova Scotia, and will be on day 157 when he arrives in Maple Ridge on his way to his final destination on Vancouver Island. He’s raised $25,000. “Ian Bos will talk about how important hospice care is to end of life,” said Vosper. “He’s on the final stretches of his journey, and we’re happy he can make it here.” MeadowRidge Rotary Club
hosted Oktoberfest for the previous two years, with donations going to local charities. Responsibility for the event has now shifted to hospice. All programs and services at Ridge Meadows Hospice Society are free to residents and their families because of fundraising events like this year’s Oktoberfest, Vosper said. This year’s Oktoberfest starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at the South Bonson Community Centre in Pitt Meadows. Vosper said a limited number of tickets are still available to the dinner and show for $45. For tickets, people can call 604463-7722 or visit the hospice office at 102-22320 119th Ave.

RCMP constables Oliver Broermann and Mike Pedrosa (a.k.a. ‘Const. Brick’) spoke to students at Fairview Elementary about Halloween safety.
Const. Brick is Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Mike Pedrosa, suited up in a homemade Lego costume he crafted with his wife Ida. Pedrosa provided visual aid for fellow Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Oliver Broermann, who spoke to Fairview Elementary students about safety dos and don’ts on Halloween night, during a Tuesday morning assembly. Broermann and Pedrosa are the new youth resource officers for Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, making the pair responsible for local elementary and high schools. Part of their duties is promoting safety to young ones, and for that, the full-size Lego policeman costume was a perfect fit. As for the costume, Mike and Ida created it over a period of several weeks last summer and adapted it for this occasion into a policeman. “I have a girl [costume] as well. We made them for our church Sunday school program,” Ida explained. “When Mike said he was doing Halloween presentations, we had the idea to change his costume into a policeman. In his original costume he just wore a red shirt.” The head is a large water jug that was cut in half and shaved down, and then fit together. It was then covered in paper mache and painted. The body is a large plastic storage container with holes cut out for arms. Ida said making the costume was “a labour of love.”

“
There was a lot of trial and error… Ida Pedrosa
”
“There was a lot of trial and error and gathering all the materials,” Ida said. “Just changing the original costume into the policeman was probably five or more hours and that didn’t involve constructing the
body, just finding and gathering the supplies and then gluing and sewing it together.” Mike, who was profiled in the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES on July 9 for returning to active duty after a battle with brain cancer, [Ridge Meadows Mountie happily returns to the streets] knows a little bit about kids – he and Ida are parents of three young children.

A photo. It seems so simple in this day and age of smartphones that can point and shoot; but what about the people who don’t have resources to get a professional family photo done, or can’t afford professional school photos? Those individuals lose out on the opportunity to display memories on the wall, share them with others, and feel proud. To Help Portrait Ridge Meadows organizer Brenda Garcia, it’s sad to realize that many locals miss out on something others take for granted. “People take for granted the fact that they have the money for family and school photos,” Garcia said. “This isn’t just for

ith the weather cooling down and the days getting shorter, hot, fresh, homemade food is one of life’s simple pleasures. And if you find yourself in Osprey Village, why not check out Jia Fusion Cafe and indulge in just that? Opened earlier this year, and located next to Stomping Grounds Coffee shop, the small eatery offers a changing menu, centred around such staples as homemade ramen, ginger pork, wontons, and sandwiches. For Jia owners Aki Chen and Vicky Hsu, the desire to create a homey atmospheres for patrons was a main component of their business. In fact, the word “Jia” means home. “We want to be just that for folks in the community,” they said. “A second home, a neighbourhood hangout, a place to relax with friends.” They were inspired to open their restaurant after taking a walk through Osprey Village, and “feeling so welcomed. We thought this would be a great place to start a business where our goal is to make people happy.” Whether it’s bubble tea, or a baked macaroon, you’re after, check out Jia, open
seven days a week, from noon until 9 p.m. “We love to have folks stop by after their commute home, or after a leisurely evening walk along the river,” they added.

New KidSport boss wants all kids playing
Pitt Meadows entrepreneur takes on new helm of charity.

Gary Mason calls the work “rewarding.” The self-employed Pitt Meadows resident is the new chair of KidSport for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. He took over the position recently from longtime chair, Len Walters. But his new role didn’t come about instantaneously. Mason grew up in a Vancouver neighbourhood, where – even though there were a lot of young people – there “wasn’t a lot of opportunity for organized sport.” However, different community initiatives gave Mason and the others a chance to try out different sports, but on more of a “drop-in” basis, than organized league. Nevertheless, Mason got involved “and loved it.” Recognizing the value of sport, Mason and his friends tried to get an official football team going at the high school he attended, “but there was no budget, so we went without.” This hardly deterred Mason from his passion for play, though.

Members of the Katzie Slough Restoration Project are inviting people for a boat ride this Saturday, Oct. 24. For $20 people can have a seat in a canoe for a voyage down the main stem of the Katzie Slough. “We are taking things on to the water,” said Watershed Watch Salmon Society engagement coordinator Lina Azeez, who is promoting the event. “When we see garbage we will pick it, ensuring we leave the slough better than when we paddled it. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Canoes will enter the water along Harris Road where it crosses the slough (roughly 13074 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows). RSVP to book a seat on a canoe by emailing Azeez at lina@watershedwatch.ca or calling her at 604-537-2341. Participants should arrive 15 minutes early as the canoes will push off shortly after 2 p.m., once waivers are signed and lifejackets are securely fastened. “It was so brilliant last time,” Azeez said. “The weather was epic, canoeing under the Lougheed highway was very exciting, and along the way people go to observe areas of concern and visualize what a healthier slough might look like.”
It has been an honour to run as your Green Party MP Candidate. Thank you to my family, friends, supporters and to my dedicated Go Green Team. Together we raised awareness and proved that Green is a viable and innovative alternative. I look forward to us continuing to contribute to our wonderful community, and to a brighter, greener future. Thank you Bob D'Eith, Mike Murray and Steve Ranta for stepping up; and Randy Kamp for years of service. Congratulations to the Liberals, and to Dan Ruimy, our new MP.

An eclectic mix of shows is rounding out the fall season at The ACT Arts Centre. From Dracula to The Sound of Music, the genres encompass live performances, musical evenings, artist talks, and audience sing-a-longs. “We are continuing to have a range of engaging, high-calibre shows,” said communication manager Karen Pighin. “Our audiences are impressed, and we are ensuring that Maple Ridge residents get to see the best,” she said. The ACT works hard to attract world-class shows that are often seen in bigger cities, Pighin explained. Along with others involved in programming, she credited executive and artistic director Lindy Sisson for this year’s lineup. Sisson brought home top honours from the Canadian Arts Presenting Association earlier this year for her achievement in the field of live performance touring and presenting. “We always have a lot going on and this season is no exception,” said Pighin. “We want to provide a high level of shows for people who live here.” For the 2015/16 season, The ACT series includes 28 performances by 25 artists or companies, as well as eight films. This is a sampling of what’s to come next, Pighin said.
Sharing Iceland Emerging artist Alexandra Edmond is visiting Maple Ridge to share how her recent artist residence experience in Iceland grew into her newest exhibit, Iceland Bound. After completing an artist in residence in Siglufjordour, a small fishing town in northern Iceland, Edmonds painted a series that attempts to capture what she describes as a “prehistoric and alien landscape without a great deal of human footprint.” This free artist talk takes place Saturday, Oct. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m., and is part of the Iceland Unbound exhibition running until Nov. 14.
Dracula visits ACT Royal Canadian Theatre Company is bringing its version of the classic thriller Dracula to Maple Ridge. Under the direction of Ellie King, the 1927 Broadway hit will be set in an updated ste-
ampunk universe with the count’s archenemy Ven Helsing is an incarnation of a stunningly beautiful woman. The show runs Tuesday, Oct. 27 to Saturday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Halloween at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $18 to $28, and a family pack of four is $85.
Singing along A theatre full of fans are expected to sing classic tunes such as Maria, My Favourite Things, Edelweiss, and Do-Re-Mi during The ACT’s sing-a-long to A Sound of Music. Memories of the classic 1965 musical starring Julie Andrews, will come alive during the evening as the audience watches the Austrian governess’ meet the seven children of a widowed naval officer. The interactive screening, in full Technicolor, includes subtitles with lyrics and kits of fun props to animate the songs. The show is set for Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $20.
ALT Fest
This year’s lineup at the ALT Fest is expected to please theatre fan, To kick off the festival, fringe hit Til Death: The Six Wives of Henry VIII, a comedic onewoman show, starts in a waiting room in the afterlife as one of the Henry’s wives arrives and tries to figure out who should spend eternity with the king. The Tudor ex-wives club stars Maple Ridge native Tara Travis. On the same evening, No Tweed Too Tight: A Grant Canyon Mystery explores the antics of perpetually inebriated investigator Grant Canyon as he leaves behind chaotic situations and staggers towards a shocking conclusion. Two shows play back-to-back
on Friday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. And during a one-man show Nashville Hurricane: A Curious talk of Finger Pickin’ Fury, the audience follows Henry Waltrip, who grew up in a trailer park with his dysfunctional mother and blues-playing mentor, Tyrone – who ALT Fest audiences met in last year’s sold-out presentation 6 Guitars. This comedic play runs Saturday, Nov. 21, 2 and 8 p.m. And for fans of hard-swinging jazz, the Jeff Hamilton Trio is performing with tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds, the founder of Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver. The trio – featuring pianist Tamir Handelman, bassist Christoph Luty and drummer Jeff Hamilton – will take audiences for a musical ride as the studio theatre is transformed into a jazz cellar. The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22. A three-show package of tickets costs $60. Nonperishable food donations are being accepted in the lobby.
Brass on stage Master of concert presentations, Canadian Brass, is known for its engaging stage presence and audiences rapport. Each concert will show a range of trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes, as well as new compositions and arrangements created specifically for the group. The international renowned band features Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Caleb Hudson and Christopher Coletti (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone) and Bernhard Scully (horn). This performance starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28. Tickets range from $15 to $43.
Tickets available Tickets for all shows are available at 604-476-2787, online at www.theactmapleridge.org, or in person at 11944 Haney Place, Maple Ridge.

Piper wins solo Simon Fraser University Pipe Band piper Kevin McLean has landed an international solo competition prize. The SFU communications student from Maple Ridge was the overall winner of the Nicol-Brown memorial amateur invitational solo piping competition held last week in Albany, New York. McLean won after receiving a first-place finish following his performance of the Pioaireachd (the Gaelic word for piping) and a second- and third-place finish in the march and MSR, respectively. The win nets him airfare to compete at the Scottish Pipers Society of London competition in November 2016, and a customized pipe chanter. McLean, in his final year at SFU, and one of three pipers studying at the university, has also – for the past three years – been invited as a solo piper to play at the former battlegrounds in France, including the famed Juno Beach.
Maple Ridge piper Kevin McLean wins international honour in New York.
