Eric Wilson returns to Nelson The man who wrote The Kootenay Kidnapper is returning to Nelson this month for the premiere of a play based on his first novel. Eric Wilson wrote several books in his Tom and Liz Austen mystery series while living in Nelson in the early 1980s. Now his debut effort, Murder on the Canadian (1976), has been adapted as a stage play that will be produced at the Capitol Theatre by Cedar Street Productions. Jeff Forst, who appears in the cast, called the experience of working with Wilson “surreal.” “These are books I read as a teen, when I was roughly the same age my son is now,” he said. Which works out well because Forst has cast his son Evan in one of the youth roles alongside Tucker Bingham, who plays Tom Austen. Wilson plans to be in the audience on opening night. When asked when we might see The Kootenay Kidnapper turned into a play, Wilson said he wasn’t sure,

Murder on the Canadian will star (front row) youth actors Sara Hurst, Tucker Bingham, Evan Forst and (back row) adult performers Eli Geddis, Ty Wright, Darren Fuss, Sydney Black, Lisel Forst, Mackenzie Hope, Sarah Ley, Molly Strachan and Jeff Forst. We want to be able to go to one spot and find out what's happeing around events for our kids, programs, and also for services in the community when we need them,'” said Christy Anderson, FAN regional coordinator. Families can visit the website from their mobile devices, tablets or home computers and find an events calendar and information on regional services. Users on the site can also contact FAN to let them know about free community events. They'll also find information on agedbased milestones.

“What that means is that as children age between birth and age five in particular there are certain milestones that we know they kind of reach along the way: walking, talking, you know, sleeping through the night and all those kinds of things,” said Anderson. “We relied on our member agencies like Kootenay Family Place, and the Childhood Resource and Referral Agency, and CBAL to help us find out what those aged-based milestones were, so that we could put them up on the site.” Articles on the website are also supplied by FAN members such as Kootenay Family Place, CBAL and Interior Health.

Marsh Creek will soon be an 18-hole disc golf course Valerie Rossi West Kootenay Advertiser

There is a certain glimmer in Mark Daines’ eye as he navigates through the perimeters of Marsh Creek along what will eventually be an 18-hole disc golf course. The manager of facilities and recreation at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s vision for the Beaver Valley Family Park has quickly moved from idea to action after a surplus of $30,000 earmarked for recreation fit the $28,000 bill to a tee. The new course will follow the Professional Disc Golf Association’s (PGA) guidelines and will be featured as an attraction for those serious about the sport. But

marriage between disc golfers and campers,” he added. “A lot of disc golfers camp and will play multiple courses and with this course being in addition to the course in Rossland, it’s another reason for people to come here and play.” Beaver Valley residents took part in a survey in recent years where there was a collective voice looking for even more walking trails and further attention to Marsh Creek and in response the regional district has continued restoring the grounds. New improvements include five new power

poles and lighting, improved drainage for the kitchen sink, a garage bay door for a storage shed, six new picnic tables, of course, equipment and prep done for the course. The brush has been cleared for the fairways, course mapped out and the installation of golf tee boxes will take place after the last frost. The course was designed by Devon Gunn, who also had his hand in the creation of the one in Rossland, and offers a little something for every level of player. “There is an easy one and then all of a sudden there’s a difficult

one and you’ve got to up your game a little bit,” explained Daines, pointing to a narrow, steep fairway. “This is a challenging par-five because you’ve got to get up the knoll and down around the bank and you won’t even see where the basket is but a sign will show you that it’s a dog left and how many meters away.” Walking the course varies, too, with steep sections and flat, wide open fields. But the design also includes alternative routes. “We’re trying to make it as natural as possible,” Daines added. “We’re not into logging stuff. We’re taking what’s already here and just kind of cleaning it up a bit.” The future course presented itself when Daines and his coworkers played a game of “frolf ” at the course in Rossland for a work social and caught the bug. A little research later and Daines was amazed to find out how popular disc golf really is. There are now more than 2,000 disc golf courses in the United States and Canada, nearly all installed by city and county parks departments. The sport started to catch on in the late 70s but didn’t really make a name for itself until 2007, according to PGA’s records. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. But instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you throw a more streamlined looking Frisbee disc into a supported metal basket. Like golf, the goal is to complete the course in the fewest number

of shots. And, even on a bad game day, the course still offers a nice walk. The family park used to look more like a landfill than a campground before it received a major overhaul in 2011 and reopened after being closed for three years. Residents who participated in a Beaver Valley survey then identified the park as a place that needed improvements and in response the site was given a makeover. Today, the grounds include a small kitchen, covered picnic area, a basketball court and volleyball net and a playground, solar heated washrooms, a brand new well system with UV protection for the water and more. The desire for more walking trails prompted Kootenay Columbia Trails Society to cut in a trail about three years ago. The Marsh Creek Interpretive Trail is a 1.2 kilometre loop that features signs along the way that describes the flora, fauna and wildlife in the area. Beaver Valley Recreation committed some much needed resources over the past few years, and it really shows, according to Area A director Ali Grieve. “The Park has been re-discovered by many, or just discovered for the first time by others,” she said. “It is well used and very much appreciated. “It’s a quiet little multi-purpose retreat,” she added. “A great spot and only getting better. We encourage people to go and check out when it re-opens in the spring.”

Lemon Creek honours pioneer merchant Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

One hundred sixteenth in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Lemon Creek is a prominent Slocan Valley waterway and community named for pioneer merchant Robert E. Lemon (1855-1907). That’s despite a sign along the rail trail that claims “Lemon Creek was so named because of the colour of the gold that was extracted from it.” According to his biography in R.E. Gosnell’s History of British Columbia (1906), Lemon was born in Paris, Kentucky but as a young boy, his family moved to Wisconsin where he grew up on a farm. Before arriving in West Kootenay, he had a peripatetic life that saw him teach school in Wisconsin and Colorado, work in a general store in Alabama, and run restaurants in New Mexico and Arizona. He went to Puget Sound in 1884 and then came to BC and worked as a purser on the steamer Lady Dufferin, which plied the Shuswap River. The following year he opened a general store at Eagle Pass Landing,

All ghouled up for the Freaker’s Ball Craig Lindsay West Kootenay Advertiser

For all ghouls and boys looking for a fun time this Halloween weekend, the always-popular Freaker’s Ball returns to Christina Lake on Friday, Oct. 30. The Freaker’s Ball has long been a Halloween tradition for the adults in Grand Forks and Christina Lake — a chance for the older crowd to dress up in costumes and dance the night away. The event is presented by Les Folles Jambettes and will feature the music of local rockers Mad Dog 20/20. “It’s a fundraiser for our dance troupe,” said co-organizer Melanie Shenstone. “We’re the local can can group in Grand Forks — Les Folles Jambettes.” The group performs at various events around the region and uses the money for travel, costuming, hall rental and other. “We’ve been going since 1997,” said Shenstone. “We’ve travelled to Europe and in to the United States. We always bring pamphlets on Grand Forks to wherever we go.” Les Folles Jambettes have been involved with the Freaker’s Ball since 2011. “The ball has been going on since oh I’d say about 30 years,”

There are always plenty of spooky good costumes at the annual Freaker’s Ball at Christina Lake. This year’s ball takes place Oct. 30 at the Christina Lake Community Hall. Photo submitted said Shenstone. “Since its started its become a tradition. People come out and have fun and go a little crazy. There are some amazing costumes and people really go over the top. It’s really fun.” Shenstone said they will have prize packs for top costumes in a number of categories. Last year’s Freaker’s Ball was a near sell out with 200 partiers coming through the door. There are still tickets available this year but Shenstone urges people to get their tickets before hand to avoid possible disappointment. “It’s pretty popular, which is great,” she said. There will also be some late night spooky snacks as well.”

There are free non-alcoholic drinks for the designated drivers. Shenstone said the Freaker’s Ball has always attracted a wide range of age groups right from 20 year olds up into the senior crowd. “It’s for all age groups (19 plus),” she said. “There are still people that come from the original Freaker’s Ball era; the baby boomers and a little younger. Seems like we’re getting a new wave of people. There were people there last year from their early 20s into their 60s.” Doors open at 8 p.m. and the event goes late into the night until around 1 a.m. Tickets are available at Thistle Pot Gifts in Grand Forks and Huckleberry Market in Christina Lake.

Ellison’s announces season-opening lineup Will johnson West Kootenay Advertiser

Ellison’s Cafe in Nelson has announced its season-opening lineup, and organizer Norman Richard said he’s thrilled to showcase Kiva Simova and Cougars in America on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. “Our first performer is Kiva Simova, who recently moved here and is internationally known as one of the leading experts in advanced overtone singing (pitches simultaneously),” said Richard. “She is a former member of the Wyrd Sisters and world tour

member with supergroup Crash Test Dummies in their heyday.” Simova has three solo CDs, has taught overtone singing globally (directing her own choir in Prague) and performed in festivals in the Czech Republic, Finland, Albania, Romania, India and many other places. “You will hear selections from her 3 CDs, ranging from jazzy pop to unclassifiable,” said Richard. “Along with imagerich lyrics, some ‘vocalese’ with overtones. Hear the biggest hit ‘Regret’, a heart-wrenching anthem on the mistakes of humanity through history.” Alt folk duo Cougars in

Kiva Simova and Cougars in America will perform at Ellison’s Cafe in Nelson on Oct. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. America will follow her. “You can expect some folk, blues, indie rock and storytelling,” he said. “Armed with his guitar, harmonicas, and voice, he creates an atmosphere that is intimate,

sincere and overwhelming. His music has been compared to Bonnie Prince Billy or Sufjan Stevens.” He will be joined on stage by Erik Shoepen on mandolin, lap steel.

News New midway vendor chosen for Silver City Days SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser

It’s out with the old and in with the new as Trail council makes way for a revitalized Silver City Days. Shooting Star Amusements, a Vancouver-based carnival is heading to Trail in May, bringing new rides for young children and thrill-seeking rides like the Zipper and Kamikaze, for the older ones. For decades West Coast Amusements traveled to downtown Trail for the five-day carnival, but the new family-owned company is more fitting with the city’s vision, says Coun. Sandy Santori. “They brought a lot to the table with our focus being primarily on families,” he explained.

Correction Last Thursday’s issue of the West Kootenay Advertiser erroneously reported that Streak for Cancer will take place at Luca Hair Studio in Trail on Oct. 28. In fact, the business’ pink streak party in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicks off tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 23) at 6:30 p.m. The salon is also willing to book appointments in advance that day.

“That’s something we want to encourage. They have the same rides for the older kids and to attract more families, offer more rides for young kids.” Aside from midway attractions such as

the Kiddie Merry Go Round, the Go Gator Coaster and the Space Train, another visual change will be apparent when the new carnival workers arrive in town. “The (Shooting Star) employees stay at ho-

tels, they won’t stay in trailers on site,” mentioned the councillor, who also chairs the Silver City Days Committee (SCDC). “They don’t need use of our facilities and they won’t have as many big trucks.”

Council members awarded the company a three-year contract, which involves revenue sharing based on gross receipts realized during the event, clarified Chief Administrative Officer, David Perehudoff.
