Sidhu elected in tight race Liberal candidate narrowly beats out Conservative Brad Vis to be new MP Frank BUCHOLTZ Mission Record

Mission hopes to benefit from having its newly elected Member of Parliament as part of the new Liberal government. Liberal Jati Sidhu was elected as MP for the newly created Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding in Monday’s federal election. His victory was one of the last ones declared in Canada, with the race called shortly after 1 a.m., after a nail-biter evening where Sidhu and Conservative Brad Vis

engaged in a close race, with results slowly rolling in. The final vote tally for the evening was 16,606 votes for Sidhu and 15,547 for Vis, although one poll had yet to report as of press time. NDP candidate Dennis Adamson came in third with 9,167 votes. Green Arthur Green was fourth with 2,288 votes, independent Wyatt Scott had 911 votes and Marxist-Leninist Elaine Wismer had 57 votes. Overall, voter turnout was 71.3 per cent – a significant increase from the below-60 per cent mark estimated from redistributed results of the 2011 federal election. Sidhu was unavailable for comment in the days following

the election, but Mayor Randy Hawes said it is a big plus for the community to have an MP sitting on the government benches. “It’s important to set aside what party you support after the election,” Hawes said. “Having an MP on the government side is good for us.” He said he expects Sidhu to set up a constituency office in Mission, which contains about 40 per cent of the population of the large riding. The riding also includes northern Abbotsford, north of Bateman and Maclure roads; Continued on A3

Elementary and secondary students participating in a mock vote chose Liberal Jati Sidhu in the MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon riding, by a much wider margin than in real polls. The race was tight in the election – Sidhu won with 37 per cent of votes over Conservative Brad Vis, with 35 per cent. Students widened that twopoint margin to a 21-point one, favouring Sidhu handily with 40 per cent of mock ballots to Vis’ 19 per cent. Student Vote Canada – organized by Civix, a non-profit group, and Elections Canada – is designed to get youth interested in democracy by giving them a taste of the voting experience. Realistic-looking polling booths, complete with voter rolls, private baffles and specially printed fake ballots, were set up in over 6,000 schools all over Canada just before the real federal vote on Oct. 19. Across the country, similar wave of enthusiasm to that which carried the Liberals to a 184-seat majority government was seen in Student Votes across the country. Students favored Liberal candidates in 227 of seats. They chose Conservatives in 70, down from the 99 MPs elected to the new Official Opposition. Over 850,000 students across Canada participated in the student vote. In Mission, students joined in at Albert McMahon, Edwin S. Hundreds participate in Toy Run

New Patients Welcome!

Motorcyclists collected more than 1,000 toys and $11,000 The Fraser Valley Toy Run held on Sunday attracted about 850 motorcycles and collected more than 1,000 toys and $11,000 in cash. The event involved motorcyclists meeting at locations in Chilliwack and Mission and then travelling to the Fraser Valley Auto Mall in Abbotsford. From there, they progressed to the Ag-Rec Building to drop off their donations. The items will be distributed among Christmas organizations in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Agassiz and Hope. Prior to the toy run, organizers had expressed concerns that the future of the event could be in jeopardy, following increased demands by the B.C. Ministry of Transportation in regards to traffic control. Toy Run volunteers say those demands were going to result in costs of about

YOUR VIEWS Election comes with a cost I have noted various comments with respect to the outcome of the election and can only say that I fully agree with those who state the Liberal spending plans will decimate the country. Justin Trudeau with the assistance of his advisors has been successful in deceiving the electorate. This is clearly proven by several of his statements. He stated that he will eliminate split income relating to income tax, claiming this will benefit the lowerand middle-income residents. Nothing could be further from the truth. Splitting income for families results in equitable taxes for families of equal total income. Further, if one member is the principal or sole income source, it undoubtedly means that the other party, wife or husband, is looking after the children, which is a very necessary and noble task. There is absolutely no justification to have such families pay significantly higher taxes solely due to the income coming from one source. Trudeau will eliminate or reduce the amount that can be put into tax-free savings accounts, claiming that such accounts benefit only the higher income bracket. I am definitely not in that bracket

and, undoubtedly, as many other Canadians have discovered, these tax-free savings accounts provide some protection from higher costs that will be, and are, associated with age. Governments are supposed to be financially responsible, and coming out with the clear statement that the first couple of years will show significant deficits is no more responsible that an individual making a major purchase with a minimal down payment. Governments should operate as much as possible on a “pay as you go” basis, as that is the only way they can be financially responsible. Much is made of allowing large number of Syrian refugees into the country with little or no security clearance. Such action is totally irresponsible. All immigrants should be subject to careful screening, regardless of any claims of being refugees. This is absolute for the security of our country and to protect us from terrorists sneaking through with legitimate claimants. I sincerely hope that Trudeau will prove to be a good and honest leader, but the track record of past Liberal governments leaves a lot to be desired. Frank Wirrell, Abbotsford

Residents’ garbage to be picked up every two weeks Frank Bucholtz Mission Record

YOU and the LAW CAR CRASH? GET LEGAL HELP EARLY Say you’re hit in a car accident that’s clearly the other side’s fault. You may think there’s no need to get legal help straight away – maybe you won’t even need a lawyer. After all, you’re insured by ICBC, and your case is bulletproof, right? But consider how things can develop if you go it alone. In a recent case, Mike (all names changed here) was driving his taxi when he was struck by Pete, who drove through a stop sign. The front of Pete’s car hit Mike’s taxi on the driver’s side, pushing it across the intersection. The door area of Mike’s taxi was damaged.

The adjuster was doubtful about the extent of Mike’s injuries and his claim he couldn’t return to work; he didn’t think Mike’s accident was major. So he hired a private investigator on the spot to conduct surveillance on Mike, expecting Mike would likely start a lawsuit over his claims. For a few weeks, ICBC did some more work on the file and also interviewed Mike again. Months passed – then ICBC totally rejected Mike’s claims for compensation, arguing he’d made false statements and breached his ICBC policy.

Stanley T. Cope

Mike reported the accident to ICBC a couple of days later. ICBC, which also insured Pete, agreed the accident was Pete’s fault and initially confirmed it would cover Mike’s anticipated claims. A couple of weeks later, Mike went to see the ICBC adjuster in person to tell his story. (An insured person must make a statement or provide a report about the accident to ICBC within 30 days post-accident.) Mike said he suffered major injuries from the collision. He reported neck, shoulder and lower back pain. He also said he suspected he had post-traumatic stress disorder. He hadn’t gone back to work, saying he was now afraid to drive. The adjuster had a photo of Mike’s car, showing only minimal damage. At this meeting, he noticed some inconsistencies between the injuries Mike described and his own observations. Mike said he’d walked 30 to 40 blocks to the claims centre, but he wasn’t sweating in his thick coat, and he didn’t have any difficulties sitting through the one-hour meeting.

Mission residents will be getting garbage pickup once every two weeks, starting next April. Mission council discussed its plans for changing the service at its meeting on Monday. While pickup of garbage will be bi-weekly, recyclables and compost will continue to be picked up every week. The changes are driven by a commitment made by Mission to both the Fraser Valley Regional District and the province to reduce the amount of waste generated in the municipality, and to boost compostables in particular. In addition, Mission is going to introduce changes to reduce the attractiveness of garbage and compost to wildlife, in particular bears. Council is also planning changes to ensure that businesses must do recycling. While many businesses are doing so voluntarily, not all have taken up the practice. Mission was identified as far back as 2010 as being a hot spot for attracting bears to garbage. Since that time, pickup of compost has been instituted which acts as even more of a magnet to bears and other wildlife. A number of programs have been instituted to educate residents about proper ways of dealing with waste and keeping it away from bears.

Mayor Randy Hawes said one of the problems is that many residents put out their garage and compost the night before pickup. This is a magnet for bears. It needs to be put out in the morning of the day pickup is scheduled, he said. The new bylaw will include fines to act as a deterrent to setting out bins the night before. The municipality distributed “rot pots” to residents for compost in 2011, but Hawes said more needs to be distributed to residents of newer homes that were not built or occupied at the time of the earlier distribution. The “rot pots” have a latch that closes, but are not bear-proof. “We have to get kitchen waste out of the waste stream,” Hawes said. The FVRD is calling for 65 per cent diversion from the waste stream by 2017 – just over a year away. The target moves up to 80 per cent by 2019. Last year, Mission diverted 54 per cent of its waste. Abbotsford has already reached the 65 per cent target. Residents will be able to place two 80-litre bins of garbage at the curbside every two weeks when the changes are made. In addition to boosting the diversion rate, the changes will save about $40,000 annually and will allow the Mission landfill a longer lifespan. The planned changes also call for significantly more diversion at the landfill. At present, only 20 per cent of waste that is hauled there is diverted.

3 Year Cashable Escalator Term Deposit Fully cashable on anniversary dates

Only then did Mike hire a lawyer, and a lawsuit was started.

Mike’s lawyer wanted to see the private investigator’s report. But ICBC refused to hand it over. The issue the B.C. Court of Appeal court had to decide was whether ICBC had gotten that report to resolve Mike’s claim or, instead, in expectation of a court fight. Also, was the expectation of a lawsuit ICBC’s “dominant purpose” for getting the report? The court decided the report was “privileged” and ICBC didn’t have to pass it over here. This left Mike and his lawyer in the dark about its contents. Very often such surveillance reports play a critical role in this kind of lawsuit. If hurt in an accident, see a lawyer early on to protect your rights and help you deal with ICBC from the get-go. Written by Janice and George Mucalov, LL.B.s with contribution by STANLEY COPE. Bill McFadden, 65, was the pastor of Christian Fellowship Centre/Grace Station, located in the old Legion building at the west end of First Avenue in downtown Mission. He has been involved in reaching out BILL MCFADDEN to people in all walks of life for 20 years in Mission. His family says “his life was centred around Christ and his passion was to show the world this great love.” He was born in Salford, United Kingdom. School champions work for future Frank Bucholtz Mission Record

Parents of students at Mission Central and Christine Morrison elementaries are concerned about possible changes to the French immersion program that call for the early program to use just one school next year. Several attended Tuesday’s board of education meeting to express their concerns. The board is scheduled to make a decision on which school will host the program next year, at its Nov. 17 meeting. Enrolment for the program, which sees students start French immersion in kindergarten, has been dropping at Mission Central since the board removed boundaries for students in the program. No matter which school is chosen, it will have a major impact on both French immersion and other students at both schools. Meanwhile, parents at both schools are working proactively on a number of projects to improve many external factors through a new steering committee known as Neighbourhood School Champions. Spokesperson Brenna Maag said the parents realized that any change made at one school will have an impact on other schools, and felt there was plenty they could do while the board is gathering information in preparation for making a decision. The group has put together a Facebook page which has attracted a lot of interest. It can be

It says that schools that are safe, inclusive, diverse and valued in the community attract more students, which allow them to offer more programs. That’s what they are working towards. In late August, at the time of two earthquakes and a massive windstorm, the group organized a cleanup of the adjacent forested area, hauling out a half tonne of garbage. It has since organized a sidewalk chalk event on the stairs adjacent to the school, and is planning a mural there as well. Other steps included a neighbourhood meeting on Oct. 6, which allowed about 80 members of the community to share ideas about making

the area safer and more attractive, not just for students and parents, but also for people in the neighbourhood. “We don’t really want to wait (for the board decision),” said Maag. “We want to work together and help work on some of the problems.” She said the issues of safety and perceptions based on safety needed to be addressed. In addition to the projects the committee has already undertaken, it plans to create walking trails in the forest, so that more people will be in the area during the day. It also is working towards a community garden on property adjacent to the school, owned by the school district and District of Mission. It wants to also promote more community use of the school building. It has received lots of support from a variety of local groups and agencies, and from the school district. Maag said the actions of the committee are planned to benefit both school communities and make them viable for many years to come. She noted that Mission Central is the only school south of Seventh Avenue and it needs to have a healthy population of students. Its location is critical for many nearby families, she added. Meanwhile, Maag is urging parents from both schools to submit letters and emails to trustees and administrators soon, as a report to the board on the French immersion issue is being prepared.

Youth challenge event takes place Saturday The Mission Strong Youth Challenge takes place Saturday, Oct. 24 at Centennial Park, starting at 2 p.m. The event challenges youth ages nine to 16 to take part in a 25-station mud- and funfilled obstacle course.

A record number of participants – 200 – are registered this year. Registrants were given access to the community leisure centre pool, gym, arena, weight room and specialized youth fitness classes starting

Piggyback rides are among the highlights of the Mission Strong Youth Challenge, taking place this Saturday at Centennial Park in Mission.

The district’s parks, recreation and culture staff say the highlight for them is in build-

ing connections with youth and seeing them challenge and encourage each other to meet

their goals. This year, the course ends at the Leisure Centre gymnasium

for a closing celebration with refreshments, activities and prizes.

Musician Corb Lund visits as part of Winter Campaign Corb Lund will land in Mission on Sunday, Jan. 31 as part of his Winter Campaign 2016 tour. He will appear at the Clarke Theatre, with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Lund’s tour supports the release of his new album Things that Can’t be Undone. Recorded with his long-time band The Hurtin’ Albertans (Grant Siemens on electric guitar and lap steel, Kurt Ciesla on bass and Brady Valgardson on drums), the album pairs Lund’s characteristically sharp songcraft with a bevy of new sounds, thrusting his mix of earnest Americana, rollicking honkytonk and rousing alt-country to new heights. The record is influenced heavily by 1960s and 1970s rock and country and steeped in the kind of narratives Lund is best-known for. The cautionary tale “Talk Too Much” swaggers like a Stones song. On “Washed-Up Rock Star Factory Blues,” Lund offers an uproarious response to Johnny Paycheck’s classic “Take This Job and Shove It.” In the powerful “Sadr City,” an Eastern influenced psychedelic guitar riff sets the scene for a tragic tale about the Siege of Sadr City, continuing Lund’s tradition of military songs that he began in 2007 with “Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! ” Rolling Stone said of the album “it finds Lund flirting in fresh sonic waters, while still keeping his sardonic mix of eerie lyrics and deceptively joyful vamps well intact.” Loss is a prevalent theme on the record and takes several different forms throughout. On the poignant album closer “Sunbeam” Lund laments the death of his young niece. On the bristling “Alt Berlin Blues” he grapples with the impermanence of places he loves. On the potent cowboy folk song, “S Lazy H,” Lund, a sixth-gen-

eration rancher, details how life on the ranch has changed due to expansion and greed. His previous studio album, Cabin Fever, released in 2012, hit number one in Canada in its first week. It was certified gold and made the Polaris Music Prize longlist. For more information about Lund, visit www.corblund.com. Tickets for the Mission show are $42.50 each (plus facility fee and service charges) and are available through Ticketmaster.

Anti Litter

Junior Bug Club

Halloween has very deep roots

Save-On-Foods Mission Saturday, October 24th, 1pm-3pm

Halloween is a day of costumes, hijinks and an often unhealthy helping of sugary sweets. Many celebrants know that Halloween evolved from ancient Celtic festivals, such as Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the dawn of winter. Celts were no longer

spending long days in the pastures, and so they gathered in their homes to tell stories and wait out the winter. When Christianity spread, Halloween became intertwined with a feast day dedicated to the saints and deceased loved ones. “All Hallows Even,” eventually got shortened to

Pumpkin Carving, Decorating Cookies, Colouring Contest and Best Costume Prizes!

Open to everyone 2 to 12 years. If you are not a Junior Anti Litter Bug Club Member, don’t worry we will sign you up on site!

“Hallowe’en,” and then Halloween. Though certain parts of Halloween history are well-known, there are many additional interesting facts about this day that are less widely known. The following are some lesser known Halloween tidbits, courtesy of the websites, The Thought & Expression

Company and Random History, as well as “The Halloween Handbook” (Citadel Press) by Ed Morrow. • The first jack-o-lanterns were made from turnips and beets. Pumpkins were used after Halloween came to North America. • The word “witch” is thought to come from the Olde English word “wicce,” meaning “wise woman.” Witches once were held in high regard. • Pumpkins actually are a fruit, a type of squash that is a member of the gourd family. • Trick-or-treating may have originated with a European custom called “souling.” On All Soul’s Day, early Christians would go door-to-door begging for “soul cakes,” which were square pieces of bread with currants. • The first-known mention of trick-ortreating was found in print in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta.

Vegetable cooking oil now recyclable Used vegetable cooking oil can now be recycled at the Mission Recycling Depot at 7229 Mershon St. A private company is collecting the oil to produce clean-burning biodiesel. Residents can bring in used vegetable-based oil, and an attendant will collect the oil and pour it into a locked

container. Only vegetable-based oils, such as canola, corn, coconut, and olive oil, are accepted. Residents are asked to strain out large food particles prior to bringing oil in for recycling. There is no charge. Mission environmental co-ordinator Jennifer Meier says, “It’s a good move
