Riding among BC top ten for voter turnout TOW N S M A N S TA F F
Monday’s federal election saw a surge in voter turnout across the country, the province and the southeast corner of B.C. In fact, Kootenay-Columbia made the top 10 for highest voter turnout in B.C. with 73.8 per cent. That number put it ninth in the
province, beating out South Okanagan-West Kootenay which came in at 73.6 per cent. Kootenay-Columbia’s turnout in the last election — in 2011 — was 63,45 per cent. The Vancouver Sun ranked the highest voter turnouts. Saanich-Gulf Islands was first
with 79.5 per cent. That was followed by Victoria in second with 77.2 per cent, Courtenay-Alberni with 76.6 per cent, North Vancouver with 76.4 per cent and Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke with 75.9 per cent. Rounding out the list was Delta in sixth place with 75.1 per cent,
South Surrey-White Rock with 74.4 per cent and Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo with 74.1 per cent. Of the list, five of the ridings voted in NDP candidates — that was Victoria, Courtenay-Alberni, Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke, Kootenay Columbia, South Okanagan -
West Kootenay. Two ridings voted in Liberal candidates — North Vancouver and Delta; two voted in Conservatives — South Surrey-White Rock and Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo; and Saanich-Gulf Islands voted in the sole Green Party candidate — Elizabeth May.

FOR THE TOWNSMAN
Gestures, facial expressions, voice variation and words all compiled together result in a speech. When you add funny thoughts and ideas you have a Humorous Speech. This past weekend Toastmasters from Area 36 gathered to select the speaker that would represent at the Division C contest in Vernon on October 24th. The contestants offered their funniest lines and thoughts, were judged and the outcome announced at the end of the contest. When the dust had settled Amanda Bott was standing at the front of the room with the trophy. Amanda honed her speaking chops during her Air Cadet days, in the Effective Speaking portion of cadets and her studies in radio broadcasting at SAIT. Congratulations Amanda and much success from your fellow Toastmasters. Above: Amanda Bott takes away the trophy for first place for her speech “Adulting.” Left: Melanine Holloway, Contest Chair. Volunteers invited to help at McWhinnie park BARRY COULTER
Bob McWhinnie Mountain Bike Skills and Skate Park has been a boon to Kimberley, and recent improvements have made it even more so. But a little more work is needed to finish off these upgrades, and the local group who oversees the park and organizes events around it are looking for volunteers, to put
the finishing touches on some newly built bike lines in the park. Alex Buterman, one of the members of the group that organizes the annual McQuinney Day, and raises funds for the park, for example, says the long dry season just past has left the ground dry that there is a considerable amount of watering and tamping to be done,
as well as other maintenance and clean-up jobs for the fall. “We have redone the bike skills park,” Buterman said. “We’ve received incredible support and in-kind donations to be able to build unique bike features that can be enjoyed by all skill levels. Before, it had been a bunch of ‘black diamond’ lines — really hard. But now there are blue lines
and green line through there nas well.” More work needs to be done. “The course has been so dry this summer — we have excellent dirt but it’s like flour right now. So we’re struggling a bit to get water on it and pack it down.”

Valdy a musical voice for Canada BARRY COULTER
Despite its vast geographical size, Canada is really a small country. That’s a good thing. And nobody makes it smaller than Valdy. Valdy, set to play the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook with Bluesman Ken Hamm, Tuesday, Oct. 27, spoke to the Townsman from Mississauga, Ontario on Thursday. But he’d already been in Cranbrook a few days earlier,
where he stopped to get a tooth pulled, on Tuesday morning, Oct. 20. Valdy was playing a 60th birthday party gig in Mississauga, prior to setting off on a fairly intense B.C. tour with longtime friend and collaborator Gary Fjellgaard (which includes the Cranbrook stop with Ken Hamm). “This is allowing me a good convalescence time.”

Valdy returns to scene of his tooth-pulling Continued from page 1
Valdy said the pain came on just last Friday, between a gig in Lloydminster and Camrose. “I started a course in anti-biotics, but by Tuesday morning I was in the chair (in Cranbrook) having it pulled out. Dr. Dave Burwash was very good.” That the legendary Canadian folksinger can come down with the toothache in Camrose and have it extracted in Cranbrook is testiment to his constant roadwork — 200 shows a year in towns big and small across Canada. That’s the life of a Canadian musician, even for someone with the stature of Valdy. We do have to be on the road to be able to reach out to people who want to hear us. They won’t come to us, so we have to go to them. It’s a vast country, so there’s lots of miles involved in it. Travelling is half of our life. The music probably takes up about three hours a day, travelling’s up to six hours a day.” Valdy (aka Paul Valdemar-Hors dal), came to prominence in the 1970s as one of Canada’s top singer-songwriters along with Gordon Lightfoot. The writer of such hits as “Rock and Roll Song,” “Yes I Can,” Peter and Lou” and “Sonny’s Dream” spoke to the Townsman about his concert partner Ken Hamm, the recent election, and where he gets his inspiration. He and finger-picking blues virtuoso Ken Hamm have been friends for years. “He’s on the road a great — I was looking at his website, he’s been working very hard this month. “He’s on his way to Lethbridge, then to Fernie, then coming in with me at the Key City Theatre on the 27th. He’s a great player — a traditionalist, but he’s put his own stamp on the tradition of the blues — wonderful to hear.” Valdy’s latest album, a collaboration with Country singer Fjellgaard, is about to be released, but probably not in time for the Cranbrook show. “It’s being manufac-
Valdy’s looking forward to playing with an old friend, bluesman Ken Hamm, in Cranbrook on Tuesday. tured in the Great Toronto Area as we speak,” Valdy said. “It’s getting pressed today. I don’t think they’ll be ready for Cranbrook. I fly back Monday, and if they’re ready I’ll bring some with me.” As for the election: “I’m really pleased with it. I’m disappointed that there’s a majority — I would have liked to see a minority government, especially for Trudeau’s first term. But he’s got good people around him so I hope he does okay.” A prolific writer of songs, Valdy serves as a musical voice in Canada. in which we can see ourselves, and in some ways our own reactions. “Inspiration comes, I think, from things that come across my bow, and something that piques my interest and is worthy of being commented on. There’s not a lot of Stompin’ Tom Connors music around anymore, so I wrote him a tribute song. And a woman on Saltspring had an exhibition of all the pictures she’d taken of people for 30 years — she asked me to play for the opening, so I wrote a song called ‘Faces’ for her. “Things like that, that I think are worthy of being represented or discussed or exposed, that’s generally what I
choose to write about. On occasion, something flippant or fun. But mostly something affirmative of the social situation.” What kind of show can Cranbrook expect? Valdy answers that while he doesn’t know the exact format of the upcoming show yet, he knows what kind of show he’d like to have. “I would very much like to play with Ken — I don’t know if he’d like to play some guitar with me or not — but I’d like to see us do a ‘songwriters in the round,’ where we go back and forth, and then have individual slots where we can presents ourselves as well, and then have a situation where we can play together. “I also have a bass along with me — I’d like to play a little bottom end for Ken. He’s got a great thumb on his left hand, so he keeps the bottom end going pretty well. But to keep something tasty going underneath that would be nice too. “The whole area is picturesque. You live in as much of a paradise as we do on the West Coast.” Valdy and Ken Hamm, with guest Connor Foote of Cranbrook, take the stage at the Key City Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m.

City okays borrowing for water tender
Arne Petryshen
Cranbrook city council approved applying for a $400,000 loan to replace its ageing water tender truck. Fire and Emergency Services’ 1993 Interna-
tional 4900 water tender has been in service for 22 years. City staff noted the insurance industry only recognizes fire apparatus for 20 years, so it no longer meets the insurance industry water
supply requirements. The water tender is required to provide fire protection to locations in the service area that do not have a fire hydrant, such as nearly all of Area C.
Council authorized city staff to proceed with the equipment financing application for a five-year term agreement for $400,000 and had no issues on that end, though councillors
had questions regarding the old tender. Coun. Tom Shypitka asked about whether there was any resale value of the old equipment, a subject he noted was brought up before. CAO Wayne Staudt said it was not likely. “With the existing old tender, I’m not sure whether there will be a water tanker, but if there is we certainly will pursue that,” Staudt said. “In the past we have donated some old fire equipment to some of our neighbouring communities, so if that opportunity comes up, that’s a council decision.” He said city staff would bring the choice to donate the equipment back to council if council so choses. “But there is very little uptake on this used equipment because it is
beyond the life expectancy that the insurance association will recognize and that put your coverage in jeopardy,” he said. Coun. Ron Popoff said that while at the UBCM convention there was a forum called GovDeals. “Sort of like government eBay,” Popoff said. “This might be an exact issue, CAO Staudt, where we may not have value for it, but you put this on the government eBay, there may be someone elsewhere in Canada that’s interested and will bid on it.” Popoff thought the city might even make revenue on it. He said he would share the information on GovDeals with city staff and council. The successful bid for the new water tender came in at just under $394,000 includ-
ing PST. Additional hose will also be purchased and the report said it will be purchased within the $400,000 budget. City staff anticipated it will arrange a loan with the Municipal Finance Authority of BC in December 2015 with debt servicing beginning in 2016. The annual principal and interest payment over the five-year term of the loan is estimated to be $84,800 and the city estimates the impact to a residential taxpayer will be an increase to the general municipal tax levy of approximately $2 per $100,000 of assessed value. Under the Cranbrook Rural Fire Protection Agreement, the Regional District of East Kootenay will contribute 20 per cent to the annual debt servicing costs.

Local gamers got together and raised over $4,320.60 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital at the second annual Extra Life Game Day last weekend at the Eagles Hall. The event, which is a fundraiser organized by Dave Miller and friends, is in support of the Alberta Children’s Hospital, which treated his son many years ago. Gamers had the option of playing any kind of console system to board games to card games and more over the 12-hour event, which featured raffles and door prizes donated locally and abroad.
Volunteers needed for bike park work bee Continued from page 1
To this end, a community work day has been set for Sunday, October 25. “We’re basically looking at some site clean up and compact the berms and the jumps. We’re looking for volunteers. Calling all cars!” Buterman said voluteers interested in helping out can show up to the park at about 9 a.m. Sunday. Everyone’s advised to bring some gardening tools — rakes. The group is also looking to organize some volunteer sup-
port throughout the coming week — going down to the park to put water on the lines — “because we’re not going to be able to work with the dirt unless it’s wet. We actually have a garden use from a neighbour’s home to use. We’re basically starting today (Thursday), going down there, doing a little site clean up, solidify these new bike lines they’ve built by watering them and tamping them down. They’ll be some shaping, so bring garden

Book mission to Nepal
I
n 1998 John Wood found himself hiking up 18,000 feet up the Himalayas, navigating icy roads and donkey trails to the highest elevation he had ever climbed. Taking a much needed respite from corporate America, Wood had booked himself a 21-day hiking vacation in Nepal. While the mountains were every bit as challenging as he had hoped, he hadn’t really prepared himself for the Nepalese people — whom Wood found to be the friendliest and warmhearted people in the world. Wood was about ten days into his trek when he met an elderly school official who offered to give him a tour of a school he was visiting in the village of Bahundanda. Although it was a a few hours almost straight up in the opposite way of his hike, Wood agreed. The school itself was
what Wood expected it to be, a rural building with dirt floors covered in sheet metal; it was also clearly over capacity, bursting with 450 blue-uniformed Nepalese children. It was the library he had expected. It was the largest and most beautiful room in the entire school, but it had one glaring fault: the shelves were empty. The school’s library had no books. Well that is not quite true. The library owned three books: ‘The Lonely Planet Guide to Mongolia,’ ‘Finnegan’s Wake,’ and a Danielle Steele novel. Three of the most improbable and unsuitable books (which had been obviously left behind by backpackers like Wood) for 450 elementary students to share. Wood, who grew up in Seattle, was facing something he had never encountered before: lifelong illiteracy. Sadly, Nepal has the highest illiteracy rate on the

Western apathy certainly hasn’t helped. 100,000 tourists trek through Nepal each year. How many toured the school’s empty library but thought nothing of it? Wood thanked the students and staff and began to take leave of his hosts. The elderly school official told Wood to come back and see them if he is ever in

Nepal again. “Perhaps,” he said shaking Wood’s hand, “perhaps sir, you will someday come back with books” Wood promised he would, although he could see the doubt in the elderly man’s eyes. Many had promised to send books; no one ever did. But a full year later Wood showed up at the school again, dragging a yak behind him. The yak was necessary to pack in the crates of books Wood brought, all 3,000 of them. And this was only the beginning. Stateside, Wood didn’t work just for an corporation. He worked for Microsoft. In the 90s. As an executive with stock options, Wood had amassed a fairly large bank account. More than this, he had the contact information of dozens of wealthy executives, no to mention his boss — Bill Gates. Could they help out with book donations?

The response was so overwhelming, that Wood quit Microsoft, and committed himself to eradicating illiteracy in Nepal. He called his effort Room to Read — a charitable organization dedicated to building libraries and filling them with books. Not limited to Nepal, Room to Read has grown to help the build literacy all over Asia and Africa. As of this year, it has built 16,800 libraries, and has supplied 14 million books. Besides supplying them, Wood has also penned a few books, including ‘Leaving Microsoft to Change the World,’ ‘Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy,’ and the children’s book ‘Zak the Yak with Book on His Back.’ Like any good corporate executive, he also had an endgame in mind. He hopes to have supplied enough books and buildings to house them by 2020 that his services will no longer be needed. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library
SD5 Hires District education specialist Jennifer Roberts is new District Principal of Technology and Transformative Learning Submit ted
Jennifer Roberts was recently appointed District Principal of Technology & Transformative Learning by the School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education. According to Board chair, Frank Lento, the District has been upgrading the technology infrastructure of all schools in order to better serve students, and to provide teachers with the necessary tools to deliver the newly redesigned curriculum that the government is rolling out over the next couple of years. “While the redesigned curriculum ensures students still learn the basics, the purpose of the redesign is to ensure that students are able to utilize their knowledge in a way that makes sense for the 21st century. With this growing focus, it’s vital that our educators have the proper training and support to maximize student learning,” explained Lento. “The District developed the District Principal of

Technology & Transformative Learning position to ensure educators are well supported now and in the future as technology changes.” Born in Edmonton, AB, Roberts received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. With twenty-one years of teaching experience, eighteen of which were in public education, Roberts has taught a variety of programs including special education, alternate education and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She has also taught adult basic education and worked as a Young Parent Education Program (YPEP) instructor for the College of the Rockies (COTR). Lento says Roberts’ diverse educational experience is vital to the role of supporting other educators. “There’s a big difference in how you approach teaching youth and teaching adults. Jennifer will be able to draw on her experience doing both as she helps our educators translate technology into a meaningful learning tool for students.” Roberts was assigned this position on a temporary basis over the summer. She is thrilled to be given the opportunity to continue her work on a permanent basis. “I enjoy working collaboratively with others and am excited to be working with such a talented –and varied— group of teachers, support staff and administrators,” said Roberts. Roberts is married with one son. She is the membership director for the Kimberley Rotary Club, and she and her husband own a corporate team building and entertainment company in Alberta called the Drum Café. Roberts also enjoys mountain biking, hockey, skiing and scuba diving. Province proposes civic election expense limits T r e vo r C r aw l e y
The B.C. government is looking at implementing campaign expense limits for civic elections, in legislation that was tabled on Thursday in Victoria. Under the proposed legislation, limits will apply to candidates running for mayor, council, electoral area directors, and school board trustees, as well as to third-party advertising sponsors. There won’t be any immediate impact on expense limits; the proposed legislation sets out a framework, while actual amounts will be set by regulation. Some of the specific changes include: •For candidates in election areas with less than 10,000 people, the proposed expense limits establish a flat rate of $10,000 for mayoral candidates and $5,000 for all other locally elected offices. •For election areas with more than 10,000 people, a per-capita formula determines expense limits. •Expense limits for candidates and electoral organizations would apply from Jan. 1 of the election year to election day (the third Saturday of October). •Proposed expense limits for third-party advertising sponsors would be five per cent of the expense limit of a candidate in the
local election area, with a cumulative, province-wide maximum of $150,000 applicable during a 28-day campaign program. Expense limits for candidates apply from Jan. 1 of election year until General Voting Day. “British Columbians and election participants expressed their support for expense limits for local government elections,” said Peter Fassbender, the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “The proposed legislation reflects the recommendations of the special committee. In addition, we are honouring our commitment to the recommendations of the joint B.C.-Union of British Columbia Municipalities Local Government Elections Task Force in 2010 that expense limits be implemented for all campaign participants.” In the last civic election, current Cranbrook mayor Lee Pratt claimed $13,700 in campaign expenses, while Wayne Stetski, who was running for re-election, claimed $8,641 in expenses. Tabling the legislation in the fall session will allow a final opportunity for public consultation, as comments will be accepted until Nov. 27. Kimberley Grad Class Challenge underway Submitted
The Kimberley Rotary Club is working hard to raise $300,000.00 for a Splash Park for Kimberley’s children. Plans are to start construction next spring. To date, over $116,000.00 has been raised but now the Rotary club needs your help. The Class of 85, at their “30 Year Reunion” at Julyfest, threw out a challenge to all graduates to check out this project and make a donation to support it. Future graduates are also welcome to join the challenge . To find details on how you can help, go to http://www.kimberleyrotary.org/splashpark . You can then follow links for more information or make a secure on-
line donation. If you prefer, you can make a donation by cheque to the “Rotary Club of Kimberley, BC Trust Foundation” and drop it off at the Kootenay Savings Credit Union in Kimberley or mail it to the Kimberley Rotary Club, Box 13, Kimberley, BC, V1A 2Y5. All donations of $50.00 or more will receive a CRA approved tax receipt so please provide a return address. On completion of this project a “Wall of Recognition” will be built beside the Splash Park to honour Associates ($500.00 or more), Partners ($5,000.00 or more) or Major Donors ($50,000.00 or more). Your donation will help to put your Grad Class on the Wall. There are al-
ready two Grad classes in the Associate category and one in the Partner category and several more classes who are presently working hard to make the list. Individual donations of $500.00 or more will be eligible for recognition as both a Grad Class donation and as an individual donor (you will be contacted with details if you are at this level). Help your Grad Class leave a legacy for Kimberley youngsters. Contact your fellow grads and invite them to help promote the challenge. For those of you on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., please help light up the social media channels with the Grad Class Challenge.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ELKO WARNING SYSTEM PROJECT COMPLETED Owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Elko Dam and Generating Station is located near the community of Elko, 30 kilometres west of Fernie. The Elk River is considered one of the best kayaking and rafting rivers in the East Kootenay. People come from across North America and the world to recreate on the river, however, they may still be uninformed of the extreme danger of being on the river between the Elko Dam and the Powerhouse. To address these safety concerns, we’ve designed and installed a warning system at Elko Dam to inform people in the canyon of impending spillway gate changes. The project includes the installation of sirens, strobe lights, improved safety fencing, and additional warning signs between the dam and the powerhouse. This warning system doesn’t inform river users downstream of the powerhouse. Safety is our number one priority. We’ve installed this system to raise awareness of river hazards associated with dam operations, to improve safety and to ensure that people in the canyon are aware of sudden changes in water levels. Please note that the land on both sides of the Elk River from the Elko Dam to the Elko Powerhouse is BC Hydro property. For public safety reasons, access to this section of the river across BC Hydro property isn’t permitted. If you have any questions, or would like more information about the Elko Warning System, please contact Sally MacDonald, Community Relations, at 250 489 6841 or sally.macdonald@bchydro.com.

New words are invented.
Old words are dropped. A good example is the word “charity”. Today, charity means “generous actions or donations to aid the poor, ill, or helpless”. In the old King James Bible (published early in the 17th century), “charity” meant something quite different 500 years ago. It meant what we now mean by “love” in its most profound sense. We would never imagine that we would draw the person we loved into our embrace and whisper tenderly, “My heart feels a warm and welcome charity for you”. The word has changed meaning. The same thing has happened with other words (“gay” jumps immediately to mind). Another is the word “radicalization”. News people use that word now to mean “someone who has become more violent because of the teachings of violence in religion.” Originally, however, radical comes from the Latin word “radix” which means “root”. To be radical, thus, means to know your roots, to understand where you come from and what gives you nourishment. It is one of those things which drive me crazy. I wish people would stop using “radicalized” to describe someone who has become more violent. It really means that a person who has delved deeply into their roots, a person who has become more grounded. I say be careful about how you use words — in politics, of course, but also in everyday speech. Your words have power. Use that power to build others up. Letters to the Editor
Dear Mr. Johnston
I did vote for you, Don, honestly, but I did get the impression that you had not been trying that hard. Sometimes I thought you had disappeared off the face of the earth. Anyway, from what I’ve heard you wouldn’t have liked the job too much. Ex-politicians tell me that it is so frustrating trying to get the wishes of your constituents over to those in power. Maybe next time, eh? But, when I did cast that vote for you I felt that it was an utter waste of time. It was four o’clock on voting day and I already knew that your Liberals had won and that your Justin was the designate prime minister. Somebody just has to suppress completely the results of all polls until the last one on Vancouver Island has closed. The present situation is ludicrous. Peter Warland Sr. Cranbrook
United Way
East Kootenay Residents: On behalf of the United Way Board of Directors I wish to thank you for your support to the United Way East Kootenay, previously known as United Way Cranbrook and Kimberley. Your donations have helped to ensure that over 6,000 people every year receive the help they need from caring, support agencies. United Way funding most often covers expenses not covered by other funders and ensures that seniors stay active and connected to their community, recreational activities are continued for children, youth and those disabled and that support programs re-
main in place to address a wide range of issues affecting the lives of many. In 2015, sixteen agencies received United Way program funding in addition to two community projects that received support. Tracked community donations allowed investments in Cranbrook and area, Windermere, the Columbia Valley and Fernie. If you would like more information, please contact our office for more information. This year $97,785 has been invested in the East Kootenay realizing a 24.9% increase over 2014 investments. These community investments address our Focus Areas of: All That Kids can be, Poverty to Possibility and Strong Communities. Through the work of our United Way, the lives of many are being positively impacted. Our member agencies provide us with statistics and real stories on their successes throughout the year. The stories are encouraging: Children from single parent homes who have mentors helping them to be all that they can be, Young Parents gaining access to support services ensuring that their children receive a strong start in life, Seniors receiving more than just a place to live, but a place to be happy and connected to their neighbors, while staying productive in their community. In all cases not a handout, but a hand up. There are so many stories and that is why we are looking to caring people like you to help us help more people. If each resident of the East Kootenay made a minimum $10 donation every year to the United Way, think of the possibilities! Every dollar raised here, stays here! nd so it was that, on May 4, 1911, the first (reasonably large) orchestra comprised of local Cranbrook musicians set up at the old Cranbrook Auditorium on Norbury Avenue to accompany the Cranbrook Operatic Society’s first theatrical production, “The Geisha.” The word “orchestra” had been employed previously, re-

ferring to a group of no less than two, but rarely more than four players. The orchestra for “The Geisha,” however, contained 12 members, including strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. It was a rousing success and left audiences and performers alike feeling that Cranbrook had climbed just a little higher on the social and musical scale. Within a week the Cranbrook Auditorium hired members of the orchestra to provide live soundtracks for silent movies on a regular basis. The Rex Theatre next door also hired an ensemble — including Jessie Wallinger
on violin and Jean Edmondson on piano — as did the Edison Theatre on Baker Street. Musical groups found further employment as summer turned to autumn and “the dancing season” began. Regular dances at the Masonic Hall (the present day Studio) began in October with overflowing crowds filling the same hardwood floor that is in use today. There was work aplenty, although the dance orchestras, varying in size from three to ten pieces, rarely played tunes of a symphonic nature. It can be a little tricky dancing to Beethoven.
The Operatic Society returned in 1912 with “The Country Girl,” featuring a 15piece musical ensemble and a chorus of 50 voices. The Wallinger/Edmondson group became the Cranbrook Orchestra and moved on to private engagements. Shortly thereafter Mrs. Edmondson severed her connections with the Cranbrook Orchestra and formed the six-member Kootenay Orchestra. Thus, for many years to come, Cranbrook’s two most popular small orchestras were led by women.

Kimberley’s Jared du Toit named to Team Canada Kimberley native and Arizona State athlete named to 2016 National Amateur Men’s Golf Squad
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Kimberley native Jared du Toit is set to live out a childhood dream after being named to Team Canada’s 2016 National Amateur Golf Squad Thursday. “Growing up going to tournaments and the bigger events, you see the Team Canada guys show up and it was always a goal of mine to one day be there,” du Toit said over the phone from Arizona Thursday evening. “It’s super cool to look back and see where I was a couple years ago and see where I am today. I’m very, very happy to be on that team.” du Toit, 20, was one of five players named to the national team by Golf Canada on Thursday, an honour that will open the Kimberley linkster to a boatload of new resources and opportunities courtesy the support of Canada’s national governing body for golf. “This is always an exciting time of year as we welcome the next group of young men and women selected as members of Team Canada,” said Jeff Thompson, Golf Canada’s chief sport officer, in a media release. “Supporting, developing and nurturing Canada’s future stars remains to be at the core of our primary objectives. We are committed to investing in high performance talent through elite coaching, training, sport science and preparation.” The first exciting opportunity for du Toit will come in January 2016 when he travels to Mexico for a training camp with Golf Canada. The camp comes as an opportunity to prepare for the 2016 World Amateur Golfers Championship, which is set to take place in September 2016 in Cancun at the El Camaleon Golf Club. “It’s super cool to look back and see where I was a couple years ago and see where I am today. I’m very, very happy to be on [Team Canada].” Jared du Toit While he celebrates being named to Team Canada this week, the 6-foot junior-aged golfer recently wrapped up his first semester of competition with the NCAA’s Arizona State University (ASU) Sun Devils golf program. du Toit transferred to ASU this past spring, following two years of competition with the University of Idaho Vandals. “It’s been fun. There are a lot more resources available down here as well and I’ve been trying to use them to my ad-
vantage,” du Toit said. “I’m trying to keep working towards getting better. My first semester here, I wouldn’t say it was a complete success. I would’ve liked to play better. “Golf’s one big process.” Under the tutelage of renowned coach Tim Mickelson, du Toit’s strongest showing of the semester came Oct. 12 to 13 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif. The Kimberley native posted three consecutive rounds in the mid-60s (67, 68, 68) en route to his first top-10 finish of the season -- placing eighth -- and helping the Sun Devils to a second-place team finish. “I don’t think you can ever be too disappointed with [three rounds in the 60s],” du Toit said. Following the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, du Toit and the Sun Devils wrapped up the first semester with another second-place team finish at the Tavistock Invitational in Isleworth, Fla., where du Toit rounded out his semester with a T-28th finish.
For now, the Kimberley native is set to enjoy some time off, with his next NCAA event scheduled for February 2016 -- the Waikoloa Invitiational in Waikoloa, Hawaii. “Looking back, I’ve played pretty well 11 months straight without a break,” du Toit said. “It’s definitely going to be nice to take some time off and when that time off is over, I’ll get back to work.” Heading into the winter break, du Toit is ranked 122nd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, making him the second-ranked amateur on Team Canada. du Toit is joined on Team Canada’s men’s squad by 22-year-old Blair Hamilton (Burlington, Ont.; University of Houston), 22-yearold Eric Banks (Truro, N.S.), 20-year-old Hugo Bernard (Mont-SaintHilaire, Que.) and 20-year-old Stuart Macdonald (Vancouver; Purdue University). Team Canada’s men’s squad is set to be coached by Derek Ingram (head coach) and Robert Ratcliffe.

Freshly minted captain, Luke Philp ready to lead by example Taylor Rocc a
When the Kootenay Ice host the Saskatoon Blades Friday at Western Financial Place, it will be behind the leadership of a new captain. Canmore native Luke Philp will have a brand-new letter sewn onto his sweater as he officially takes to the ice as the 19th captain in franchise history, after being named to that role Wednesday afternoon. “I’m extremely honoured,” Philp said Thursday afternoon prior to practice. “There have been lots of great guys who have worn the ‘C’ here before. It’s a huge honour. “Everyone is a different leader and I’ll take my own approach to it. “Lead by example with everything I do -- it starts on the ice. I’ve got to be the hardest-working guy out there every day, both in practice and the games, and other guys will follow.” Philp follows in a long line of well-established and celebrated players to have worn the ‘C’ before him, including the likes of Nigel Dawes, Jarret Stoll and, most recently, Sam Reinhart. While it might seem a tall task for the 5-foot10 pivot to follow in the shadow of players like Dawes, Stoll and Reinhart, it’s an opportunity he has earned and as far as head coach Luke Pierce is concerned, an opportunity the 19-yearold Philp is ready for. “Right now, it’s what he brings on the ice -not just his talent but his work ethic,” Pierce said Thursday. “He’s a guy who, off the ice, does a lot of the right things. Through 12 games this season, the Ice (210-0-0) have managed two victories and sit 12th in the WHL’s 12-team Eastern Conference. The Blades visit Cranbrook for the first time this season after having dismantled the Ice by a 7-2 margin back on Oct. 7 when the teams met in Saskatoon. “I’m interested to see how much our guys remember from that,” Pierce said. “Anytime you get a whooping like that, you put that in the memory bank and you want to exact some re-

There was a fresh face roaming the halls of Western Financial Place Thursday afternoon as newly-acquired forward Dylan Stewart emerged from the Kootenay Ice dressing room with a smile across his face. “Honestly, at first, I was shocked,” Stewart said Thursday of being traded. “Then after a while, you realize you’re going to be a getting an opportunity somewhere else to maybe play a little more and help a team out more. So I’m really excited.” The 6-foot-1, 187pound forward was acquired by the Ice, along with a conditional fifthround pick, from the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday afternoon. He arrived in Cranbrook in time to skate with the Ice Thursday and is expected to be in the lineup when the Saskatoon Blades visit Western Financial Place
“You realize you’re going to be getting opportunity somewhere else to maybe play a little and help a team out more. So I’m really excited. ” Dylan Stewart Kootenay Ice Friday night. With only 10 healthy forwards prior to the acquisition of Stewart heading into the weekend, the arrival of the 18-year-old Edmonton native is a welcome one. Ice head coach Luke Pierce expects to use Stewart at centre to begin with. Should that not work as hoped, Stewart brings a versatility that will allow him to be deployed at any forward position. “He looks to be a real responsible player that was doing everything he
could to play within the system there in Prince Albert, which is really big for us,” Pierce said Thursday. “We’ve had some challenges with some of our guys understanding the structure and playing within it. Having another body that can buy into what we’re doing is a positive thing. We need to be a very detail-oriented club and tha-t’s what we’re looking for from him. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for Dylan. What he chooses to do with it is up to him.” Stewart describes himself as a 200-foot player that can put the puck in the net, is good on face-offs and will do anything to help his team win. That’s all welcome news for Pierce. Stewart, who posted eight goals and 10 points in 80 career games with the Raiders, is expected to wear sweater No. 27 when the Ice host the Blades Friday night.
Having started the season with the East Division-leading Raiders, Stewart hopes to bring some of that mojo to Cranbrook in order to help spur his new squad. First comes a contest with the Blades, a team Stewart is familiar with after having played them twice in September as a member of the Raiders. “With [the Raiders], we were really hot, winning a lot of games. There was a good feeling in the room,” Stewart said. “[I want to] bring some of what I’ve learned there, bringing it here to help us win some games. “Shutting down [the Blades’] top line is really important. They real do a lot of damage. If we just play our game, shoot pucks and get pucks to the net, I think we can beat them.” Puck drop between the Blades and Ice at 7 p.m on College Night at Western Financial Place.

The Kootenay Ice announced the release of defenceman Nathyn Mortlock Thursday. The 6-foot, 183pound Mortlock is set to join the Melville Millionaires of the SJHL. In 11 games with the Ice, Mortlock registered one goal and 10 penalty minutes. See dailytownsman. com/breaking_news/ for more.
venge. I’m hoping that’s the case with our group.” The Blades are fresh off receiving a whooping of their own -- victims of a 7-1 loss at the hands of the Red Deer Rebels Wednesday. “Last time we didn’t have a very good effort against them in Saskatoon,” Philp said. “But we’re looking to come with a much harder approach to the game and get on them right away. They’re a fast team. We’ll be ready for that and we’ll have a much better effort this time.” Puck drop between the Ice and Blades is set for 7 p.m. Friday on College Night at Western Financial Place. Notes: The Ice are expected to be without D Cale Fleury (upper body), D Tyler King (knee), RW Jaedon Descheneau (upper body) and RW Max Patterson (upper body) Friday night… Following Friday’s contest with the Blades, the Ice depart for two road games, beginning Saturday at Red Deer and concluding Monday at Edmonton…

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Fatigue could interfere with your plans and ability to achieve what you want. Your sense of direction around your home and domestic life will be a major focus. A power play might take you down a path you would prefer not to go. Try to detach and disengage. Tonight: Head home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ll start a conversation, but you might not be up to finishing it, as it could go on and on. You
also have other matters on your mind, and you’ll want to delve into those thoughts. Let others know that you have something to do, and excuse yourself. Tonight: Say “yes.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be aware of the costs of your decisions and actions. Someone could feel as if he or she is being pushed past his or her natural limits. Be open, and let this person have more space, even if you’re not comfortable with the distance. Tonight: Make it your treat. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might want to dive into a situation or take the lead in a heartfelt project. Note how someone you care about closes down on you. You can’t change this person’s attitude, but you can remain courteous. A friend pulls you out of the doldrums. Tonight: Let the weekend begin. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Two nights ago, I witnessed my best friend being verbally abused by her boyfriend. The boyfriend was drunk and probably doing something illegal. I listened to him yell at her on the phone all night while we were supposed to be spending time together for her birthday. It was 3 a.m., and he was demanding that I pick him up on my way to take her home. I told him no, because I didn’t want him being drunk and possibly violent in my car. I let my friend know that she can call me if she needs anything, and dropped her off at their house. Although I’m sure her boyfriend will eventually get himself arrested for violating his probation, I feel it is up to me to report him. But if I do, I will lose her friendship. Should I turn him in for the sake of my friend’s safety or mind my own business? -Unsure in Ohio Dear Unsure: We aren’t certain what this man was doing that violated his probation. Yelling at his girlfriend isn’t enough to warrant a report, unless there is a restraining order preventing him from phoning her. Does his probation state that he cannot drink? If so, you should report him and let the chips fall. But a suspicion that he might have been doing something illegal is not sufficient, and the police likely would not pick him up for that unless you could provide proof. And without any evidence, he could accuse you of harassment. Please be careful. This guy sounds like a loose cannon. Your friend should call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org) at 1-800-799SAFE and ask for help. Dear Annie: I’d like to offer some additional advice to “Can’t Stop Crying,” who wants to keep the dog confined because “Lassie” scratches the floors, wears down the furniture and leaves dog hair all over. Her husband thinks she’s being cruel and refuses to compromise. Now he sleeps with the dog, and she’s in tears. Your suggestion to get a trainer to intercede was good, but it won’t help with the dog hair. My savior was an indoor invisible fence. It is a small unit that plugs into an outlet creating a barrier. Our dogs have freedom throughout the downstairs, except for the formal living and dining room. And the invisible fence also prevents the dogs from going upstairs to our bedrooms. We allow the dogs on the family room furniture, which gives them lots of snuggle time with us. The durability of washable dog blankets protects the furniture and can be removed when we have company. Our dogs are spoiled and happy, and so am I. I’d also like to note that “Crying’s” dog probably has become accustomed to sleeping with the husband and it will take a little tough love to break that habit. A friend found that it helped to give their dog a large stuffed animal to sleep with instead. -M. Dear M.: Thanks for the additional suggestions. We hope the husband is willing to compromise, but he seems quite content to romance the dog and leave his wife by herself in the bedroom. NEWS/features Orchestral manoeuvres of yesteryear Continued from page 7
The First World War kept local musicians in steady employment for a time, with regimental balls, farewell parties, and general soirees of all types. The Grand Sympho-
ny Concert took place at the Auditorium with all proceeds going to the Belgium Relief Fund. The concert was deemed a success although a local editorial stated, “Three symphonies of Haydn, although beautiful to music lovers, are not exactly calculated to make concerts generally popular to the large body of the public, a necessity to financial success.” And so it was that the first ever Cranbrook Symphony heard the

The music was good, the attendance was not. “A sad commentary on the public spirit and taste of our residents,” stated the local Herald newspaper. It wasn’t until 1922 that anything resembling a large orchestra made another appearance when members of the community approached city council requesting funding to reform the city band, an on-again, off-again ensemble from Cranbrook’s earliest days. Promising a membership of between 20 – 30 musicians the group

The release of the movie “Birth of a Nation” saw the performance of Cranbrook’s largest symphony up to that time – Herald, Oct. 26, 1916 met with local support and began rehearsals early in 1922 under the leadership of Lee Edwards. Dave Kay, a local newspaperman and musician of the day recalls in a newspaper article of January 21, 1970, what transpired. The band leader was, stated Dave, “one of the most outstanding musicians with which Cranbrook has been blessed over the years.” He first appeared during a lumberjack dance in which the regular violinist failed to show and immediately proved to be an excellent player. His abilities became the talk of the town and soon thereafter he organized a 35-piece concert orchestra and also took over as not only leader of the city band, but also a choral group and a glee club of stringed instruments which often performed as a single large unit. His wife came to join him and soon “Mama” also became a popular local figure. The following spring his wife left for Spokane for a serious operation and shortly thereafter he showed his friends a telegram stating his wife had died. He remained in town to conduct the band during a large cer-
emony for the WWI vets, earning the sympathy and admiration of the entire community and left the next morning to attend to his dear departed. It soon became apparent that he had borrowed varying sums of money from numerous acquaintances just before his departure. He was never seen in town again. Amazingly, about a year later, Mama, apparently entirely non-deceased, returned and, with nary a word as to her mislaid husband, took over a restaurant on Van Horne Street. She proceeded to pay off many of his debts one by one but was soon requested to move on by local authorities who were not impressed with her upstairs “roomers.” The music continued, however. The music always does. Next Week: Symphony of the Kootenays and Other Delights.
