Campbell River man dies in Saskatchewan helicopter crash Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

This unauthorised recreation area on Upper Campbell Lake was inundated with water from the storm in December 2014 and demonstrates the extent to which modifications are made.

BC Hydro, TimberWest crack down on camping in ‘Little America’ BC Hydro and TimberWest are “glamping” down on Little America. BC Hydro and TimberWest property along the shoreline of Upper Campbell Reservoir has been used for years by unauthorized campers, turning the areas into DIYenhanced recreational sites. Both landowners have encouraged people to use the managed campsites elsewhere around the

watershed, including those operated by BC Parks and Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. But the unauthorized camping in two areas has grown to be a problem, according to BC Hydro. The locations are known by locals as Little America – near a wooden trestle – and Eagle Point, which is between Strathcona Park Lodge and the Highway 28 bridge over

Buttle Narrows. “BC Hydro is aware of the informal camping and we deal with the odd camping or squatters issue from time to time when it becomes problematic, but we were very surprised this summer to see the amount of roads and campsites along the shores of the reservoir,” says BC Hydro’s Stephen Watson. “We thought it was a handful of campers. But over the last 10

years or so it has grown to about 60 campsites and perhaps 150 or more people on weekends in the four areas of Little America. We’ve never seen it to this extent.” This summer and fall Watson spoke to some of the people, many of them from Campbell River, and the vast majority of the campsites appear to be set up in the spring and taken down in the fall. A Campbell River pilot and his passenger from Prince Albert, Sask. have both died after last week’s helicopter crash near Paynton, Sask., approximately 200 km northwest of Saskatoon. The initial investigation determined the two men were contracted by SaskPower to do work in the area, and were using the helicopter to access the power lines, which was later confirmed by SaskPower, but no other details of the work being done were made available. The pilot has since been identified as 55-year-old Steven Wilson. Mayor Andy Adams told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix the incident, “is a devastating loss for the immediate family and I do know there a lot of people rallying around them at this particular point,” adding the family is well-known and very active in the community, “and there will be an impact.” The helicopter was an MD 500D owned by Oceanview Helicopters, based out of Powell River, who issued a statement after the crash, saying, “We are saddened to confirm that one of our helicopters was involved in an accident yesterday afternoon (Thursday, Oct. 22), and that the pilot and one passenger suffered fatal injuries at the scene. We have been in contact with the pilot’s family and are in communication with the passenger’s employer, who is our client. Our thoughts and

improper grey water disposal, fuel spills, to inundation of belongings and equipment when the reservoir level increases from the fall storms. It’s causing damage to our property. “This unauthorized and uncontrolled clearing and use of our land is not something we can allow.” The Eagle Point site has about 40 campsites, bring the total unauthorised campsite to about 100 (including Little America). Watson

People are staying at one campsite location for months at a time. The majority of the sites are now vacant. “There are perhaps a handful that seem to stay there as some sites look to have been occupied for years,” says Watson. “By and large the users seem to be somewhat coordinated, with even a sewage truck coming bi-weekly. However, this has become a large liability to BC Hydro. This includes wildfire risks,

said BC Hydro and TimberWest have worked together over the years to close off other areas around Upper Campbell Lake. BC Hydro owns the land along the reservoir shoreline and TimberWest the inland areas and road networks. About three-quarters of the campers appear to be on BC Hydro property. “People are camping for free but as the property owner it isn’t free as there are impacts,” says Watson. tion came to light in June when BC Hydro, TimberWest and drinking water authorities met to visit the areas. The Campbell River system is the source of domestic water supply for the City of Campbell River and areas of the Strathcona Regional District. “In talking to some of the campers it seems people started going there years ago and over time friends and family started to expand the camping areas,” says Watson. “With no one really stopping them, it went from there. Now it’s a significant campsite. We decided to wait this summer until the season was over and then per-

manently close off these areas. TimberWest and BC Hydro will discuss things over the winter to see if TimberWest would consider managing one of the main Little America sites, with camping fees, for the May to September period.” Watson says BC Hydro is unable to manage these unauthorized recreation sites because of limited resources and budget. He pointed out Hydro already has year-round and free campsites below Strathcona Dam. TimberWest and BC Hydro are sharing the cost to install gates, post signage, and remove any belongings from the land that are still there past

Dec. 9. “The signage will be in place on Oct. 27 and the gates, left in the open position, will be installed a week later,” says TimberWest’s Oyster River Operations Forester, Bill Grutzmacher. “The signs will essentially say that occupants have six weeks’ notice to remove their belongings. “The gates will be placed not on the main hauling road but where these side roads are located that lead down to the reservoir. “In some areas the roads will be decommissioned by ditching and rock placement, like we’ve done in the past. The gates will be closed on Dec. 9.”

Four men pulled from water following boating accident Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

One of the most dangerous areas of the B.C. coast has caused another boating incident that sent one man to Victoria hospital clinging to life. Sgt. Troy Beauregard of the Campbell River RCMP says just after 6 p.m. Saturday night, the RCMP West Coast Marine Section Patrol Vessel Lindsay and its four-man crew were returning to Campbell River for the evening, when they spotted a capsized vessel near the west side of Seymour Narrows and four people in the water. They alerted Coast Guard and began rescue operations that would see them recover two of the men by jet boat launched from the RCMP vessel, one of

whom was, “unconscious and unresponsive” when pulled from the water. Emergency first aid was begun by the RCMP member as the jet boat made its way to Brown’s Bay Marina to meet BC Ambulance, Beauregard says, at which point a second private vessel arrived on scene and aided in the recovery of the other two boaters. “ The unconscious male has since been transferred to hospital in Victoria where he is in serious/critical condition,” Beauregard says, and the other three men have been treated in hospital and since released. “It was very fortunate that the vessel was spotted by the RCMP Crew,” Beauregard says, as none of the men were wearing floatation devices. “It is believed that they

Firefighters called out to new hospital site kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Fire crews responded last Friday night to reports of a possible fire at the new Campbell River hospital site. Four fire trucks and 17 firefighters attended the scene. “It’s one of our major buildings, so we don’t fool around,” Fire Chief Ian Baikie said. Firefighters walked along the roof and scoured the inside of the building by flashlight after receiving a call from a resident living nearby that there was smoke coming up from behind the large crane on the construction site and an odour of burning plastic. Baikie said it took awhile for crews to go through the large building, but didn’t find anything other than some heaters that were in use which he said could have produced the smokey smell. “We’re not sure if it was something in there or if it was someone in the area,” Baikie said. “We smelled burning in the area so it could have been someone burning something inappropriate.” Fire crews cleared the scene around 10:30 p.m. after Baikie said firefighters were “absolutely” certain there was no fire in the building. The new $274.5 million hospital has been under construction since last year and is expected to open in late 2017. The Mirror reported last Friday that construction has been on time and on budget and is a couple of weeks ahead of the new hospital being built in the Comox Valley. The new 95-bed hospital is being built next to the existing hospital.

were likely in the water for less than 10 minutes.” The investigation into the causes of the incident is ongoing and is being completed by the Campbell River RCMP with assistance from the RCMP West Coast Marine Section. As of Tuesday, there was no official update on the condition of the hospitalized boater, and names of those involved are not being released at this time, but the RCMP have said none of the men were local.

Campbell River region crosses over to the future

T

here was a lot of talk about bridges in the Campbell River area over the past year. The region is building bridges to the future both literally and figuratively with the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge taking its place in the limelight along with the John Hart replacement project and the new Campbell River hospital. Working more quietly in the background are the local businesses that are also crossing over to a bright future. Their stories are told in Progress 2015 inside today’s Campbell River Mirror.

An Open Letter to the Community, Regarding Nyrstar Myra Falls For more than xx years, Myra Falls has been a world-class ore body mine. Its operations have contributed to the prosperity of the people and the Campbell River region – and we want to keep it that way. But we also have to come to terms with some difficult truths. Nyrstar Myra Falls is in need of investment and changes which will address long standing issues which impact output. Declining production, increasing operating costs, and need for new infrastructure and mining processes means that we have no choice but to enter a temporary period of time where regular operations stop, and strategic programs and investments are assessed. The kinds of changes and investments that we believe need to be assessed include substantially upgrading the mine site’s power infrastructure, significantly improving future mine planning – for instance, creating development plans for the Western zones of the site – and optimizing our operational and maintenance practices. Change of this size and scope doesn’t happen just by wishing for it, and it doesn’t happen easily. So, in order to secure prosperity for employees and the region into the future, Nyrstar Myra Falls will enter into a period where regular mining and milling operations are suspended. Through that period, we will work collaboratively with a core group of employees who will be dedicated to and focused on site optimization. That group will work with a clear goal of transitioning our future operations into an efficient and profitable mine site, able to extract maximum value from the world class ore body at Myra Falls. Appropriate engagement with all stakeholders has begun and will continue throughout the regular work suspension period. Nyrstar Myra Falls management feels confident that working together with all stakeholders, the structural issues at the site will be resolved and production activities will resume. In the interim, management and employees at the Nyrstar Myra Falls mine site remain completely committed to safety and environmental stewardship. If you have questions about the optimization process, please contact: Name and contact information here

Eric Stapleton came down from Sayward on Saturday to be a part of the City of Campbell River’s Repair Café, which celebrated fixing rather than replacing.

MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

K

urriss Wilson, who recently opened the bike shop Retro reCycle in Willow Point, has always been “a fixer.” “The way I see it, you should buy something one time,” he says, polishing his bike in a side room at the Sportsplex on Saturday, the murmur of the Home Show clearly audible from the gym across the hall. Or not buy it at all, he says, and just make it out of parts from other things, as he’s done to create the bike he’s polishing. “I’ve had this one for 37 years,” he smiles. “Sure, there have been tweaks and upgrades, but even that front tire is 17 years old.” And it’s not just a pleasure cruiser that he uses when it’s nice out. It’s his primary mode of transportation. “I probably put 40 km a day on it.” Wilson was at the Sportsplex to be a part of Campbell River’s first Repair Café, organized

by the City of Campbell River and Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CMWM). Repair Café is a worldwide initiative begun in Amsterdam in 2009 to encourage people to repair broken things instead of getting new ones and learn some practical skills at the same time. In the six years since the movement began, over 750 cafés have taken place around the world. “We are trying to empower people to be less wasteful,” says Gayle Bates, waste reduction educator for CSWM. Wilson, for one, is fully on board. “When you look at there being something like 130,000 bikes put in landfills in North America each year,” he says, “it’s just baffling. I mean, what a waste, right?” Meanwhile, at a booth across the room, Don Barley looks over a seemingly new Kitchenaid food processor, it’s bottom panel taken off, wires hanging out. “Someone brought this in because he

bought it brand new, and when he got it home, it didn’t work,” Barley says. “When he called the company, they sent him a new one for free and told him to just throw this one out.” So he and fellow “fixer” Eric Stapleton cracked it open to see what could be causing the issue. It wasn’t a mechanical problem – Barley’s expertise – so Stapleton took it over to his booth to have a look at the electrical panel. “Let’s see what we can do here,” he says, pulling out his toolbox. Elsewhere in the room, there are women sitting with sewing machines waiting for anyone with hemming needs, someone who

knows about smartphones willing to help those with questions, and someone else taking apart a guitar amplifier brought in by a musician. For physicist Dr. David Barr, it’s a wonderful coming together of expertise and enthusiasm. He was there working on electronic devices because he’s concerned about their components – often containing toxic materials – ending up in the waste stream and negatively affecting our natural environment. No word yet if the city has plans to repeat the event, but based on the enthusiasm of those involved, it seems the idea itself is one likely to be recycled, as well.

Our View

New approach to leadership needed On Monday, voters across Canada dealt Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party a stinging rebuke and handed Justin Trudeau’s Liberals the mandate to govern with a majority. While the Liberals now control the levers in Ottawa, they should draw several lessons from the election that put them there. With the Conservatives in power, the country was not, despite the cries of some, going down the tubes. The economy has generally been stable, crime continues to fall, and the rights of lawabiding individuals continue to be enshrined in law. The government can claim only partial credit for some of those, but nonetheless, Canada ranks well on an We say: Tory international scale. The leadership failed fact that the government was defeated in such a an otherwise manner in spite of those successful record strong fundamentals suggests Canadians had grown tired with how the Conservatives went about their business. And the Liberals must heed that cautionary note. They have already laid out an ambitious agenda. They must keep the economy running, while helping those who need a hand. They have promised to run a deficit in order to increase infrastructure spending, but must keep the debt in check so as not to cripple future generations. And they have to balance the need to protect Canadians with the rights of citizens. But that isn’t enough, voters have said. They must govern in a manner that prizes openness over secrecy, and inclusiveness over division. Trudeau has spoken about such principles. But now it’s time for him to make good on his promises. – Black Press

Interesting news from BC Hydro and TimberWest today regarding Little America. This isn’t the first time that the informal campground has been in the news. A few years back I did a story on it because of the mess left behind by campers – RV’ers, actually. They had built wooden patios and kitchen shelving and other sundry items to make “their” little piece of shoreline comfortable. And then left it behind presumably to be re-used when they came back the next year. For those not familiar with Little America. It’s the area along the shore of the Upper Campbell reservoir behind the Strathcona Dam. Many people move their RVs in there in the spring and stay throughout the summer free. They’re essentially squatters on TimberWest and BC Hydro land. As I understand it, the term Little America was applied because it used to be Americans who would set up camp there and use the area as a base for their fishing expeditions. I don’t know if it’s still predominantly Americans or if it even ever was but that’s how it got

A LIMB

Living in Campbell River is not good for my health or anyone else that lives near homes that burn wood. I have burned wood in northern locations and a simple look outside at the chimney told you how cold it was as the smoke would go straight up the colder it became, but here it just lingers over the roof of the houses. The Health Canada website (query wood smoke) and read “Avoid wood smoke” as it lists all of the reasons for not burning wood. When you have four neighbors and no wind it penetrates the house with the windows closed. Dioxins from driftwood (salts) have well established health issues. Dioxins also dissipate very slowly in the environment. Driftwood should never be burned. Ironically there are no flowers allowed at the hospital, smoking is banned almost everywhere, no perfumes at the workplace yet I have wood smoke on sunny days at 20 degrees Celsius 7 to 8 months a year. Wood smoke causes dizziness, eye and throat issues and long term health issues with the heart and lungs (numerous others are listed with Health Canada). Neighborhoods that burn wood should be avoided on your next house purchase for you and your family’s health. David Sutherland Campbell River

used for decades. It’s just that modifying your campsite to make things more comfortable for you is passe´ in the outdoors these days. Leave No Trace is a wilderness ethic that we should all subscribe to. But the campers at Little America and Eagle Point are definitely not. This has an impact on our environment. But, really, this is about our woods and our lakeshores that we love so much and enjoy. If they’re polluted, trashed and crowded with people building kitchens and patios, then it’s unsightly and disgusting for those seeking at least the illusion of untouched wilderness. Formal campsites are created to protect natural areas from overuse. Part of the Leave No Trace ethic is to camp on surfaces that won’t be impacted, like rocks and gravel. There’s lots of places to camp for free that have outhouses and garbage cans around here. Plus if you want an away-fromit-all experience, you can do it. You can camp in the backcountry, nobody says you can’t. Just travel light and Leave No Trace.

Regional district condemns board’s actions towards director KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The Strathcona Regional District is rallying behind one of its directors who has been told he is no longer welcome on the forestry board he has sat on for the last seven years. Gerald Whalley, director for electoral Area A, was told to leave a meeting of the Mid Island Forestry Lands Advisory Group (MIFLAG) on Sept. 22 and to not come back. Whalley said he angered the Western Forest Products representatives who sit on the advisory group board by questioning the group’s clean audit. His reasoning, he said, was he had become suspicious of the forestry group following a controversial vote on a motion related to Western Forest Products’ use of herbicides in the Sayward Valley. “I appealed the audit findings and this made them angry,” Whalley said. “So the forester said, ‘you’re no longer welcome here.’ We’re meeting on private property so I had to leave.” Whalley said three others left with him and another MIFLAG meeting was then scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, after the Mirror went to press. At last Thursday’s regional district meeting, the Strathcona Regional District board – the body which appointed Whalley to the MIFLAG board – approved sending Cortes Director Noba Anderson, in addition to Whalley, to

the meeting in the event Whalley was escorted off the meeting premises (Western Forest Products’ Menzies Bay office). Directors said they wanted Whalley to attend to make a statement. In a letter to MIFLAG, regional district Chair Jim Abram took the group to task for its dismissal of Whalley. “I would like to convey the regional district board’s extreme disappointment with the action you have taken concerning Director Whalley,” Abram said. “I have never encountered any company that has dismissed a member appointed by another agency, solely due to the fact that they disagree with the company’s views on silviculture. Advisory groups are put in place to give advice. You can take that advice or not, but dismissal of an appointee because of that advice is totally inappropriate. Every member of MIFLAG must be free to discuss and to vote

as they wish on these issues without hostility or intimidations.” Abram added that the group’s “failure to follow due process is unacceptable and your conduct towards Director Whalley is both unethical and disrespectful.” At last Thursday’s regional district meeting, directors threw their support behind Whalley. “Director Whalley has served on the MIFLAG committee for the past seven years with absolutely no issues and no problems until Western Forest Products came to an impasse over the Strathcona Regional District’s position on herbicide application in the Sayward Valley,” Leigh said. “They used Director Whalley as their scapegoat.” Wha l le y s aid t he problems started when a motion went before the MIFLAG board to increase Western’s allowable use of herbicides. A vote was called on the motion, with six voting in

favour and four against. Whalley said the motion was declared carried, or passed, even though, as Whalley contests, in the forestry group’s Terms of Reference it states that “decisions which must be made by MIFLAG are done by consensus building techniques where consensus is deemed to be ‘no strong opposition.’” Whalley said he requested that the minutes of the Sept. 22 meeting – which have not been posted to MIFLAG’s website – show that the motion failed. Following that Sept. 22 meeting, Jeff Ternan, operations manager for Western, wrote a brief letter to the regional district stating that Whalley’s participation in MIFLAG had been terminated. “In light of recent events, Gerald Whalley is no longer welcome to participate in, or attend any further MIFLAG meetings or functions,” Ternan wrote, but didn’t explain further in the let-

is scheduled to further detail the SPCA’s plans at the Nov. 2 city council meeting. Daniell sent a request to council asking for an extension to the typical 10-minute allowance given to delegations. City staff recommended council allow Daniell 30 minutes. Coun. Larry Samson questioned whether council could change the usual 6:30 p.m. start time in order to keep the council meeting from running too late into the evening while still accommodating the extension. “Is it possible to move up the meeting and have an earlier start to allow this presentation?” Samson asked. A similar barn was also built in Surrey last year and is used mostly to shelter and rehabilitate seized farm animals. New facilities are also in the works for the West Kootenays, Dawson Creek, Vancouver and Kamloops. In Campbell River, the SPCA branch is run out of the back of the Francophone Association building on 13th Avenue. The centre is a smallerscale SPCA model than what originally existed for years on Merecroft Road. That original animal shelter was closed over the Easter weekend in 2013 after city council awarded Coastal Animal Control its animal pound contract – a major revenue stream for the SPCA. That was the tipping point for the BC SPCA which had been subsidizing the Campbell River branch for years. More than a year later, following several fundraisers, protests and a lengthy search for a new building, the SPCA opened its animal adoption and education centre.

The Phantom Limb installation by Shyra de Souza is on display at the Art Gallery until Nov. 5.

Exhibitions fascinating Art Gallery visitors Visit the Campbell River Art Gallery before Nov. 5 to enjoying two one-of-a-kind exhibitions. In the Main Gallery, artist Shyra de Souza’s installation Phantom Limb, is a porcelain installation featuring found objects. Sponsored by Broadstreet Properties Ltd., the installation is large in scale and reminiscent of a dinosaur museum as well as a domestic display. De Souza is an interdisciplinary artist based in Calgary whose work ranges from sculpture installation to animated film, collage and drawing. Her work has been screened and exhibited across Canada, the U.S.

and Europe. In the Discovery Gallery is an immersive installation, created by artist Twyla Exner, called Structure of a Substance: Cluster. Sponsored by Healthyway Natural Foods, it uses discarded telephone wires to create whimsical imaginings of an alternative ending for the residues of the electronic evolution. The craft-based technique transforms the material of discarded wires into individual works and collective installations. Exner is a Canadian artist, currently living in Grande Prairie, Alta., who uses the materials and images that comprise electronics as inspiration to cre-

Humanitarian Maude Porchet is a world traveller who is living her soul expression of love and freedom and helping others along the way. The story began years ago when the White Rock woman’s passion for embracing humanity and discovering the beauty of the planet off the beaten path brought her to the arid desert of Northern Kenya, Africa. While there, Porchet witnessed the strength and courage of the Turkana people surviving in one of the harshest environments on Earth. Their resiliency opened Porchet’s heart to such great compassion that she decided to put her love into action and ignite hope where none existed before. She founded the Turkana Empowerment Project which is raising funds to provide for the people of the Parkati community – an isolated village in the Turkana desert of Kenya – the skills training needed to become drivers, carpenters, mechanics, teachers and nurses. As a way of raising funds to support the project, a crystal bowl fundraising concert is taking place tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the old Elks Lodge in Campbell River (516 S. Dogwood St.).

Musician Pixie Hobby will bring to life the sounds of magical crystal balls played in harmony. Hobby is the vicepresident of the Turkana Empowerment Project, an environmental lawyer and a Reiki master. She is a great humanitarian and delights in offering her gift of music to help raise money for the Turkana people. As many of the tribal people have no formal education, the funds raised support projects that benefit the whole community. Funds raised through the crystal bowl concert will go towards construction of a wooden fishing boat to enable 20 youths to make a living fishing on the southern part of Lake Turkana.

A crystal bowl concert takes place tonight to raise money for author Maude Porchet’s humanitarian work in Kenya.

Porchet herself will speak about the ongoing projects and answer questions prior to the crystal bowl concert. Her book, For the Love of Peter, which chronicles the start of the Turkana Empowerment Project, will also be available at the show.

The crystal bowl concert begins at 7 p.m. tonight and tickets cost $20 each. Tickets are available in advance by calling 250923-1683 or at the door the night of the concert. For more information visit, www.turkanaempowermentproject.org

I became a Chartered Accountant but found my true source of happiness in life was through creativity. I enjoyed painting very much. I also was a talented amateur gardener and a damned good cook. The best time of my life was during the years I spent on Quadra Island from 1987 to 1999. I built a cabin there and allowed my hair to go uncut. Freedom, Wow. I will rise and go now and go to Innisfree. The Lake Isle. My place. My world. The following ten years were spent with my wonderful wife Vera in Oceanside and Victoria. Even after losing Vera and the life we had together of travel and sharing, the good times continued. I died of Emphysema brought on by 47 years of smoking. But I had good times, undeservedly wonderful times and a good finish thanks to management, staff and many good friends at Somerset House and Berwick by the Sea. Thank you everyone. Bob was 83 years old and was predeceased by his father, mother and sister Doreen. He is survived by his sister Dorthea, son Bob (Teresa), son Greg (Annamarie); grandchildren Joshua, Caitlyn and Jeremiah, daughter Susan and his many caring nieces, nephews and their families. He will be missed.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE...

his season is shaping up to be one of the tightest VIJHL races in years. The Campbell River Storm, the Nanaimo Buccaneers and the Comox Valley Glacier Kings are separated by just two points in the standings. Friday’s match-up between Campbell River and Nanaimo was expected to be a tight battle. After losing the season opener, 7-0, the Buccaneers had handed the Storm a pair of losses, including a hard fought 2-1 doubleovertime drama at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. Following that game, in the Nanaimo press, comments attributed to Buccaneers general manager and head coach, Dan Lemmon, indicated that when the going gets tough and physical the Storm were reluctant to be first on pucks. The scene was set for two very talented teams battling for first place. An untimely penalty for too many men on the ice led to the game’s first goal just 1:20 into the first period when Nanaimo’s Jake Calverley fired a point shot past a screened Billy Gorn. Later in the period, however the league’s top goal scorer would add to his total to even the match. At 12:19, Gage Colpron would score his 16th goal of the season on a great individual play. He would steal the puck in the neutral zone and then go for a skate getting around Nanaimo defenseman Tyler Graham, cutting across the goal mouth and beating Alex Orth. As Head

Storm forward Alex Rosolowski breaks past the Buccaneers defenders for a short-handed chance early in Friday’s game. Rosolowski wasn’t able to get this one by Nanaimo goaltender Alex Orth, but the team did manage to pull out a win to stay atop the VIJHL standings, one point ahead of their rivals out of the Comox Valley.

Coach Lee Stone would say after the game, “the goal was typical Gage Colpron.” “The second (period) was great,” Stone said. “I thought we got great puck movement, especially on the power play. At 10:57 Colpron would once again steal the puck and set up Dylan McCann in front of the net to put the Storm in front 2-1. Just over two minutes later, Kobe Oishi would make it a two goal game on the power play. After some good puck possession in the Nanaimo zone, Braeden Cyra, from behind the net, centred the puck to Oishi who rifled it past Orth. Late in the game, Graham would get the Buccaneers to within one when he picked up his own rebound and

chipped it past Gorn. Nanaimo would then pull their goalie for an extra attacker and Oishi would seal the deal with his second of the night with just 18 seconds left on the clock for a 4-2 final. For Gorn, it was his second win between the pipes after coming to the Storm from the AJHL’s Bonnyville Pontiacs. He turned aside 27 shots and made some timely saves. “We were really happy with that game,” Stone said, though he did express some concerns about the undisciplined penalties in the third; Campbell River spent half the frame shorthanded and relied on its league-leading penalty kill. The captain, Colpron, was named first star with three points (1G,

2A), McCann (1G,1A) was the second star while defenseman Ryan Grills was given third star honours. For Nanaimo, Jordan Levesque and Trent Bell played hard but were limited to just a point each. After the Comox Valley Glacier Kings edged the Victoria Cougars

on Saturday, the North Division remains tight with the Storm in first with 22 points, the Glacier Kings next with 21 and the Buccaneers one point back in third. Another tough opponent ahead for the Red and Black this coming Friday when they they host the Victoria Cougars.

Smashing pumpkins The Campbell River Compost Centre is hosting its annual Pumpkin Smash once again this year to help residents dispose of their pumpkins after Halloween. The ninth annual event takes place in the parking lot of Strathcona Gardens on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Sunday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The free, family-fun

event includes refreshments and helps keep thousands of kilograms of pumpkin out of the landfill by allowing people to come and smash their pumpkins. These pumpkins will then be turned into rich compost instead of becoming a ghoulish waste. Donations of non-perishable food items will

be accepted at this year’s event for the Campbell River Food Bank. Those bringing their pumpkin to the event are reminded to remove all objects such as candles and tea lights from their pumpkins prior to smashing. For more information about composting visit, www.cswm.ca/composting
