Community mourns Brooke Malakoff

FERNIE FREE PRESS In her last post on The blog of a teenage cancer fighter, Fernie’s Brooke Malakoff wrote about a summer visit with her family. “I am so blessed to have the family and friends that I have. I had nothing but fun and was surrounded by love the entire time,” the 20-year-old wrote. On Saturday the Slocan Valley native succumbed to her illness, shortly after a

pink pumpkin fundraiser organized by Linden Lane Farms in the Kootenays, which raised $1,300 for the oncology department of the BC Children’s Hospital. Malakoff was diagnosed as a teenager with a rare form of cancer normally found in young children. Since then she has become a tireless advocate for cancer research. “For those of you wondering what you can do for Brooke and

We love you Brooke,” posted Debbie Simmons. Judy Hildebrand called Malakoff “an Angel that was called home”. “We are so saddened to hear the passing of Brooke. This news left an enormous hole in our hearts. She was such a beautiful strong and brave girl.” Austyn Mary Potyok agreed. “In my mind, Brooke lost no battle. She won

by leaps. She beat cancer by living as if she never had it, and by inspiring others to do the same…Until we meet again Brooke, on another chilly day over warm tea, you will continue to inspire me.” According to her tribute page on the BC Children’s Hospital website, “Brooke lived her life to the fullest and never complained about the hard times. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ELKO WARNING SYSTEM PROJECT COMPLETED

All the PET-iculars

Owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Elko Dam and Generating Station is located near the community of Elko, 30 kilometres west of Fernie. The Elk River is considered one of the best kayaking and rafting rivers in the East Kootenay. People come from across North America and the world to recreate on the river, however, they may still be uninformed of the extreme danger of being on the river between the Elko Dam and the Powerhouse. To address these safety concerns, we’ve designed and installed a warning system at Elko Dam to inform people in the canyon of impending spillway gate changes. The project includes the installation of sirens, strobe lights, improved safety fencing, and additional warning signs between the dam and the powerhouse. This warning system doesn’t inform river users downstream of the powerhouse. Safety is our number one priority. We’ve installed this system to raise awareness of river hazards associated with dam operations, to improve safety and to ensure that people in the canyon are aware of sudden changes in water levels.

If you have any questions, or would like more information about the Elko Warning System, please contact Sally MacDonald, Community Relations, at 250 489 6841 or sally.macdonald@bchydro.com.

Kimberley asks community to be radon aware Mayor and Council would like the residents of Kimberley, BC to be Radon Aware and test their homes for radon gas this winter. Radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and estimated to kill as many as 3,300 people each year in Canada. Radon is radioactive and comes

from the decay of uranium in rock and soil. You can’t see, smell or taste radon, leading many people to do nothing at all. The only way to know if a home has high indoor radon levels is to test. “Radon is a serious public health risk, but the first step to preventing illness from radon exposure is

easy – all you need to do is perform a simple, and low cost test,” says Britt Swoveland, Program Manager for RadonAware. “We want every homeowner and resident to test - to be safe, and we’re excited to partner with Kimberley BC to encourage residents to take action.” Radon can be found

everywhere across BC and Canada, but there are certain ‘hot-spots’ where radon levels can pose an increased risk. Kimberley is considered to be in a region of the Province where indoor radon levels may be elevated. “Mayor and Council are pleased to be supporting public

awareness of radon and we hope people will take a few minutes of their time to purchase a testing kit and test their home this winter. It just makes sense to do this, especially knowing that radon levels in our community could be elevated,” said Troy Pollock, Manager, Planning Services.

Cranbrook Food Action Committee (CFAC) has been selected as a semifinalist in the BC Hydro Community Champions Video Grant Contest. They now need the support of the community to help them win $10 000! If won, these funds will help sustain the Cranbrook Public Produce Garden and allow CFAC to offer a larger range of workshops to anyone wanting to learn about growing, harvesting and preparing their own food. The Cranbrook Public Produce Garden is located between 6th and 8th St. N in Eric MacKinnon Park. The Garden aims to connect people to local food and provide space, as well as the skills required to grow your own. The garden follows an open gate concept meaning anyone at any time can come take part. Within the gates there is no ownership only stewardship and everyone is encouraged to help with weeding, harvesting, planning, seeding, watering, picking, planting, designing, composting, teaching…any and all aspects of the garden. Sophie Larsen, coordinator for CFAC says “Voting is very easy, only 2 clicks of the mouse and you are done. This grant would go a long way in allowing us to continue to offer workshops such as how to plan a successful garden, and preserving the harvest.” There are only 15 semi-finalist and 5 will receive $ 10 000. The three projects with the most votes, as well as 2 selected via BC Hydro judges will be awarded the funds. To see CFAC’s two minute video application and to vote visit

Gregarious Gardener 10 neat things..bird feeding 1. Sticking Around for Winter. In fall, we see the large flocks of songbirds gathering to head south. There are, however, some birds that stick around for the colder months. The frozen and snow covered ground makes it extremely difficult for them to get the enough calories to keep their bodies warm during the cold months. 2. A Place to call Home. To survive the winter, birds need three things: shelter, food and water, and protection from predators. A stand of evergreen trees or shrubs creates great protection against wintry temperatures. One of the best evergreens for food, shelter and nesting is the pine; it is often home to chickadees, woodpeckers, blue jays and numerous other birds. 3. Water is Life. Like other animals, birds also need a good source of water to stay properly hydrated. You make your yard more attractive by providing a bowl with fresh water near the feeder. In the winter months, keeping the water flowing can become a bit more challenging. There are heated bowls and you can get birdbath de-icers to keep the water flowing. 4. Natural and Organic. Providing sources of food for birds can be easy for gardeners. Instead of tidying up the yard at the end of the fall season, leave the seed heads of purple coneflowers for finches to munch. Refrain from pruning or deadheadmust present coupon

ing the last of the roses, leaving the Vitamin-C rich rose hips for the birds. Birds will also feast on the blue- black berries of Virginia creepers, the red fruits of cotoneasters, shriveled crabapples left on the tree and many other fruit. 5. Don’t Suet the Small Stuff. If there is not an abundance of natural bird food in your yard, you might want to supplement with a good quality seed mix. Sunflower seeds and peanuts both have a high fat content and can easily provide the extra calories and most birds in our area enjoy them. Suet is another good way of ensuring wintering birds get the fat content they need. Commonly sold in the shape of cakes, balls or bells, suet is a mix of fat, bird seed and nuts and can easily be hung almost anywhere. 6. Chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee. one of the most commonly recognized birds, chickadees can easily be identified by their call. Chickadees prefers wooded areas, but they are also quite content in backyard hedges and birdhouses that can protect them from the elements. They enjoy a diet of black oil sunflower seed and are voracious eaters of insects – a very good reason to keep them around all year long. 7. Wood is not for Eating. Woodpeckers frequent a wide variety of habitats and a woodpecker’s diet includes fruit, nuts, corn, ants, tent caterpillars, grasshoppers and many kinds of flying insects. They change their diets according to what food sources are most abundant and for-

age in the air, on the ground, and in trees. They often poke into crevices and chips at the bark of trees, searching for insects, but not “eating” wood. 8. I’m not Upside-Down. You Are! The favourite winter foods of the nuthatch are black oil sunflower, suet, sunflower chips and skinless peanuts. Nuthatches will often forage together with other birds in a group known as a foraging guild. They will occasionally feed on the ground, and readily visit feeding stations. You can pick them out easily, because they frequently descend tree trunks headfirst and can hang upside-down beneath twigs and branches. 9. Feeders Galore. There are many different kinds of bird feeders. A good feeder to hang out for nuthatches, chickadees and woodpeckers is a tube style feeder, with big enough ports for the preferred variety of seed, or a screened-sided tube feeder. Upside-down suet feeders are also a great choice for all three. If squirrels are an issue in your yard, you might want to look at a squirrel-proof feeder. 10. Winter Birdwatching. Each year around Christmas, bird watchers across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean take an informal head-count of the birds in their neighbourhood in the Christmas Bird Count. For more information on the individual counts, you can go to the website of the British Columbia Field Ornithologists at http://bcfo.ca.

“The second annual Kootenay Baby & Toddler EXPO is a growing event which took place at the Tamarack Mall on Saturday. The mall was filled with exhibitors, activities and performances, all about pregnancy, babies and toddlers! Dixie Star Storytelling from Vancouver did an amazingly colorful performance for the very littlest people and the fashionshow organized by Bumble Tree and Over the Rainbow Family services was filled with cuteness. There were also many professionals such as midwives and health practitioners represented and the doula speed dating gave expectant moms a chance to connect with the doulas on a more personal level. In the kids play area an interactive womb was set up with heartbeat sound to illustrate the baby growing in the womb. The event was sponsored by Bumble Tree, Photos by Frida, Kimberley Promotions, Over the Rainbow Family services, Denham Ford and Kootenay Savings. The day began and ended with babyraces!”

OBITUARY

James Gold “Jim” Paterson “Tex” 1926 - 2015 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jim Paterson announces his passing on October 14, 2015 after a brief illness at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook. Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was 89. Jim was born in the old Kimberley Hospital on June 12, 1926, the third of five children to Henry and Clementine Paterson. Jim grew up in Townsite on 3rd Avenue, and began work at CM & S (Cominco) at the age of eighteen, retiring after 40 years of service. During World War II, Jim enlisted in the Canadian Forces, but the war ended just before he was sent overseas. Jim married the love of his life, Joyce Williams, in 1948, and together they raised three sons, Terry, Jack and Kevin. Between 1980 and 1992, Jim and Joyce delighted in welcoming seven grandchildren, and playing integral roles in all of their lives. At the time of his passing, Jim was “Great Papa” or “Great” to five great-granddaughters. Family was the cornerstone of Jim’s life, and he was equally loved in return. He cherished raising a “small smash” with friends, cheering for his grandkids’ numerous teams, and was always in attendance at all their activities. Jim also dedicated much of his life to his community by serving with the Kimberley Fire Department, Ambulance Service, and as a Director on the City Parks Board. Jim helped clear the land at the site of the Townsite rink and spent innumerable nights flooding the outdoor rink for the neighbourhood kids to skate on. In later years, Jim became the Trail Street Grandpa, where kids would stop for a “peppymint” or Werther’s candy treat on their way home from school. Jim is survived by his three sons Terry (Shirley), Jack (Kathy) and Kevin (Michelle). He is further survived by his seven grandchildren Paula (Josh) Merk; Tracy (Jamie) Russell; Nathan Paterson; Jesse Paterson; Justin (Jodie) Paterson, Brendan Paterson and Rhiannon Paterson; as well as his five great-granddaughters Reese and Drew Merk; and Sayler, Paisley and Piper Russell. He is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Curtis and Mabel (Jim) Glennie, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents; sister Betty; brother George; and wife Joyce. At Jim’s request a Family Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2016 whereby Jim and Joyce will be interred together at the Kimberley Cemetery Columbarium. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Looking for a new vehicle - check out these 2016 models!

2016 Hyundai Tucson

Overall: The Tucson is poised to go from contender to leader in the compact tallwagon class.

Drivetrain: A choice of non-turbo or turbo engine, the latter comes with AWD. In a field dominated by the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4, buyers aren’t lacking for choice. The Tucson’s design mimics that of the larger Santa Fe, especially when it comes to the trapezoidal grille. The Hyundai gains 7.6 centimetres in overall length while the front and rear wheels are set 2.5 centimetres farther apart. Interior volume with the split-folding rear seat in place also increases by an impressive 20 per cent, but falls short of the leagueleading Honda CRV. The rear seat now reclines 37 degrees and the dashboard/ control panel is now cleaner and more business-like. The base SE gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 164 horsepower. Optional is a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder that delivers 175 horsepower. It replaces the previously optional non-turbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder rated

at 182 horses. A sixspeed automatic transmission connects to the 2.0, while a segment-exclusive seven-speed automated manual transmission is hooked to the

turbo 1.6. All-wheeldrive is optional with the 2.0, but included with the turbo powerplant. The unit has an AWD lock control switch that lets you “hold” the torque split equally between the front and rear wheels for maximum traction on rough terrain. AWD can also direct extra torque to the outside rear wheel when the Tucson is turning, while at the same time applying light braking to the inside rear wheel. This “torque vectoring” makes for more stable cornering. For improved ride comfort and control, Hyundai has stiffened the front and rear suspension attachment points, upgraded the engine mounts and bushings and increased the amount of sound insulation. All Tucsons come with the usual power-operated features plus air conditioning. Depending on the trim level you can outfit the Tucson with heated and leather-covered front and rear seats, dualzone climate control, panoramic sunroof and the latest collision-mitigating/

BANKRUPTCY? REPOSSESSION? BAD CREDIT? HIGH INTEREST?

avoidance technologies.

2016 Dodge Ram

Overall: Ram offers the most attractive and clever touches in the light-duty class; two new models aimed at the ultra-lux and desert-running set. Drivetrain: Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 and 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 still joined by 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other counter-

measures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to respectable levels. After a few years of the macho Ram 1500 trumpeting its excellent fuel economy, the pickup has been given a couple more traditional pickup topics to crow about. First is the return of the Laramie Limited, which has fewer cowboy-themed bits than the equally luxurious Laramie Longhorn and is aimed at Ford’s Platinum and GMC’s Denali. There’s special materials, silver pinstripes, dark wood and (gasp!) berber carpets. The second model is the Rebel, which has a can’tmiss RAM badge across the front and similar treatment on the tailgate. There are also lots of black

powder-coated bits, along with some additional skid plates, tow hooks and new 17-inch wheels. For 20016, you’ll find the same trio of engines. Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 offers 305 horsepower. Its eight-speed automatic transmission also helped and it can now also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. The most unique engine is the optional 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty fullsize diesel pickup in

North America . . . so far. Using 240 horsepower and 420

pound-feet of torque with the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 4,180 kilograms. The regular V6 can tug 3,390 kilograms. As for body styles, regular-cab models are available with a six-foot, four-inch (1.8-metre) box, or an eight-footer (1.9-metre), while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” (1.7-metre) bed, or the 6’4” (1.8-metre) bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 12-ounce (350ml) cans that can be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches include a capless fuel-filler sys-

tem and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park the beast into incredibly tight spots.

2016 Ford Focus

Overall: Ford’s updated mainstream compact is now available in a completely nuts, rally-ready, allwheel-drive RS super hatch; fuel-sipping three-cylinder engine, still-smoking-hot ST performance and electric powertrains continue. Drivetrain: 160horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder connected to a five-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automated manual; 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo with a sixspeed manual; ST still uses big turbo and extra gear to handle 252 horses; optional all-electric drivetrain with 143-horsepower engine; Mustangsourced turbo-four gives amazing 350 horses for the AWD in the new RS. For decades, Ford

has offered various versions of its small cars bearing the RS -- or Rally Sport -badge, but unfortunately, those Escorts, Fiestas and Sierras never made it to North America. For 2016, that’s finally changing. The latest generation Focus RS follows much of the same recipe, including a wild body kit, stiff suspension, giant wheels and super-sticky tires. Also logical is the Mustang-sourced 2.3-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder that produces an incredible 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The RS only comes with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. That means a zeroto-100-km-h time of about 4.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 250 km-h. The AWD system includes four driving modes to suit location and Continued on page 12

conditions, including Sport, Track and a special Drift mode that allows for serious sideways driving.

Its price of around $38,000 is nearly double the price of the base cars, but should be worth a look as it promises to be as much or more fun than a V8-powered Mustang. The remaining Focus range continues unchanged, including the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged “EcoBoost” engine with 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Now playing the mid-

dle ground, the ST performance model is aimed at buyers who otherwise might be in the mood for a Volkswagen GTI. The 2.0-litre “EcoBoost”

turbocharged fourcylinder produces 252 horsepower and even has an “overboost” with a giant slug of mid-range torque added. The ST is still f ro n t - w h e e l - d r i v e, but uses a stiffer suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems to make it a true back-road hero. The Focus Electric continues with its 143-horsepower mo-

tor and lithium-ion battery pack that can deliver a claimed range of about 120 kilometres. By Ford’s clock, recharging takes three to four hours from a 240-volt home station. Like other electric cars, the Focus isn’t inexpensive with an MSRP of $35,500 before tax rebates and other incentives, but there aren’t many downsides if you can afford it. The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder

engine is rated at 160 horsepower and is connected to a fivespeed manual transmission. Optional is a six-speed automated

manual gearbox with paddle shifters.

2016 Jeep Cherokee

Overview: Even three years in, Cherokee basks in its glorious return as Jeep hasn’t needed to change anything yet; still top-notch at navigating difficult onand off-road terrain. Drivetrain: A Fiat-based 2.4-litre four-cylinder is supplemented by a

3.2-litre-V6 option; standard nine-speed automatic transmission helps reduce fuel consumption while three optional 4x4 sys-

tems supply a range of traction needs. When the Cherokee name returned three years back, Jeep must have been rather confident about its efforts, because even for 2016 there’s nothing but minor changes to report. Although contentious with some critics, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointynose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers took. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise. The interior is also as modern as the outside, although now includes reshaped front seats, a revised instrument cluster and tilt steering column that’s easier to use. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.5- or 21.5-centime-

tre touch-screens (depending on the trim level) that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiatdesigned 184-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder. Optional is a 271-horsepower 3.2-litre V6 that’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions, which is the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheeldrive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions,

is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in the same models, comes with a two-speed transfer case that’s designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. For rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by 2.5 centimetres), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.).

Operation Christmas Child 2015 is underway again this year. This program is a project run through Samaritan’s Purse, which provides children living in situations of war, poverty, and natural disaster with a free gift filled with goodies, packed by people like yourselves. For some children this might be the first gift they ever receive. This also opens the doors for children, their families, and their communities to receive additional assistance from Samaritan’s Purse in the form of access to safe water, feeding programs, shelter, medical assistance, and/or educational resources. Over the last 20 years Samaritan’s Purse has been able to provide over 120 million shoeboxes to over 100 different countries. To participate with this worthwhile, fun and satisfying gift all you need to do is go and pick up your

shoebox at one of the locations below. Make sure to grab a pamphlet as that will give you all the instructions you need to pack your shoebox properly. There is also the option of packing one for Ukraine again this season so be sure to mark that on the box if that is where you wish for it to go. Another thing we do ask this year is to please not include candy as customs will not allow it to cross anymore. If you are able to, please include $7 for each box you pack and place inside the box as this will be what they use for the cost of shipping. If this is something you cannot afford we would still love to have you pack a shoebox and Samaritan’s Purse does get donations to cover just the shipping of boxes from other sources. Watch out for wildlife - crews install detection signs

The B.C. government is about to pilot two new high-tech wildlife detection systems on Highway 3, to help warn motorists when wildlife is on or near the highway. There will be two locations for the wildlife detection systems on Highway 3 - the Elko site, approximately 1 km east of Elko, and

the Michel site, approximately 2 km east of Sparwood. These locations were selected for the pilot systems because of high numbers of elk and deer, which can often wander onto the highway and have the potential to cause serious crashes. “As a part of our Rural Highway Safety

and Speed Review, we looked at how we could help reduce wildlife caused crashes and boost safety on our highways,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “These flashing light warning signs will warn the driver if a

large animal is on or near the highway, allowing the driver to slow down in order to prevent the crash.” Mining industry workers use Highway 3 as their commuting route between the Elk Valley and the mining sites, and the area draws thousands of

skiers and snowboarders to enjoy the worldclass ski hills. The new wildlife detection systems will help boost safety for industry workers, commercial truck drivers, locals, and tourists. Installation is underway now, and following completion, there

natural health

by Trent Brereton, ND

Health Canada Muzzle

Health Canada is not meeting it’s objective to help Canadians make informed health decisions perhaps because of close ties to drug companies. No one knows this better than Dr. Persaud, a GP in Toronto, who has concerns about the effectiveness of a morning sickness drug called Diclectin. Diclectin, a combination of Vitamin B6 and an antihistamine, is made by a Quebec based pharmaceutical company called Duchesnay. It is prescribed to thousands of Canadian women every year as a primary treatment for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Dr. Persaud fought for four years to get drug industry documents about Diclectin held by Health Canada. He recently received the documents but before getting them he was required to sign a confidentiality agreement preventing him from sharing what he learned with anyone, including patients and colleagues, under threat of legal action if he breaks the agreement. The information he received included unpublished clinical trials on the effectiveness of the drug. Dr. Persaud started trying to get the information in 2011 and the initial documents he received were so heavily redacted

he wasn’t able to learn anything. In fact, one page titled “adverse events” was completely blank. Earlier this year he resubmitted his request for the information under the Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act. The second round of documents the doctor received weren’t redacted but Health Canada’s muzzle on the doctor prevents him from being able to share what he learned. Reading between the lines it is easy to see that the information Dr. Persaud received show the drug is no more effective than placebo…but he can’t say that directly for fear of being sued. According to Democracy Watch, this is an example of how Health Canada is protecting drug company profits and preventing accountability instead of protecting the public from harm and ineffective medication. I encourage all of us to lean more about the Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act (also called Vanessa’s law named after the 15 year old who died from complication of the drug Prepulsid) and to lobby government to cut ties between Health Canada and drug companies so that we can be sure our public health regulator is on our side.

will be at least two months of testing to ensure the systems are working correctly before they go live. Once activated, sensors will be triggered when large animals approach the highway. Flashing warning signs will light up, telling drivers to slow down to help them avoid hitting the animal. “Our government is committed to improving safety for motorists and protecting our wildlife,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “Highway 3 between Cranbrook and Alberta is an important location to launch the new warning signs because this route is used heavily by mining industry workers, commercial vehicles, and those visiting the local ski hills. We will continue to improve safety for drivers

and passengers.” Ministry staff will monitor the data from these sites to see if there is a decrease in wildlife related crashes as a result of the new detection systems. This data will be examined to see if this is a viable solution for other parts of B.C. B.C. has numerous mitigation measures in place to reduce wildlife- vehicle collisions. These include wildlife exclusion systems (over 500 km of fencing, overpasses and underpasses, etc), roadside mowing and clearing and advisory signs. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has invested $2.5 million in this pilot project. The project is a recommendation resulting from the B.C. government’s Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review.
