Habitat for Humanity has announced the recipients of the new home construction in Westbridge that will replace a residence destroyed by the recent wildfire. Bob Huff, executive director of HFH Southeast BC (HFHSBC) proclaimed Dale and J.D. Winn and their four children as the family the organization will be helping get back on their feet after losing everything to the fire. Huff visited the family last Friday to check in on the construction effort, which has already produced a goat shelter, built by the numerous volunteers and donors who have reached out to the Winns with their expertise and construction materials. Habitat for Humanity is renowned for its volunteer response across Canada and volunteers’ willingness to make a difference in their own communities. Joining HFHSEBC in rebuilding the Winn family home will be another organization renowned for their volunteer response. Mennonite Disaster Services has pledged their support to partner with HFHSEBC and the Rock Creek Westbridge Fire Needs Committee in the construction of the Winn’s new residence. “Every day for the past two months, people from the

Boundary region have been volunteering and responding to the needs of the people devastated by the fires,” Huff said. ”In some ways, you could say that disasters bring out the best in people.” Huff views HFHSEBC’s partnership with Mennonite Disaster Services and the Rock Creek Westbridge Fire Needs Committee as more than the rebuilding of destroyed homes. “It’s about building hope,” he said. At a ceremony held in Rock Creek on Oct 23, the managers of Buy-Low Foods in Osoyoos, Oliver and Grand Forks, along with AG Foods in Osoyoos presented a cheque to HFHSEBC for $17,100 to assist with the wildfire recovery efforts. The four stores accepted donations from customers who gave generously at the checkouts at allfour locations. Sam Corea, the director of retail operations for the grocery chain praised the stores customers for their response. “While the people of Rock Creek and Oliver have begun the long journey to rebuild after the recent fires,” Corea said, “it is uplifting to see the generous contributions made to this campaign.” HFHSEBC, in partnership with Heather Smith of the Yellow Door boutique, is also presenting a fashion show and silent auction at Greenwood’s • See WESTBRIDGE HOME page A3

Quote of the Week: What others think of us would be of little moment did it not, when known, so deeply tinge what we think of ourselves. – Paul Valery (1871 - 1945) Joke of the Week: I was in a job interview today when the manager handed me his laptop and said, “I want you to try and sell this to me.” So I put it under my arm, walked out of the building and went home. Eventually he called my mobile and said, “Bring it back here right now!” I said, “$100 and it’s yours.”

Will Trudeau keep his promises? As the federal election campaign signs slowly make their way into storage, some likely never to re-emerge, Canadians are now able to return to a normal routine with an opportunity to reflect upon the events of Oct. 19. With Stephen Harper’s Conservatives’ resounding defeat at the hands of the upstart Liberals, coupled with Harper’s resignation as party leader, much of the nation hopes to see an immediate change to both the domestic and international face of Canada. If the Liberals are to live up to their campaign promises, the new prime minister has a lot of work ahead of him. Trudeau has promised to change Canada’s tax regime with increases for the highest earners and tax cuts for middle-income Canadians within his first 100 days in office. He also said he would reverse the Conservative government’s doubling of tax free savings account limits and the income splitting it introduced for families with young children. One of Trudeau’s most ambitious and expensive promises was that of a new Canada Child Benefit that would replace all existing benefits with one that is based on a family’s income. The new system would see families with children under the age of 18 and earning less than $200,000 getting more money, but those earning above that amount not receiving a benefit at all. Internationally, Trudeau has promised to end Canada’s combat troop presence in Iraq and Syria, instead sticking to training Iraqi troops. He has, in fact, delivered on part of that promise by informing U.S. President Obama that Canada intends to stop helping the Americans bomb ISIS-held territory in Iraq and Syria. However, accusations of human rights abuses have been levelled at Iraqi troops, adding a tricky second layer to the prospect of training more homegrown soldiers. Trudeau has also made promises around Bill C-51 reform, marijuana legalization, election reform, health care and access to information, to name a few. The list of promises is a lengthy one, to be sure, which will make Justin Trudeau’s first year in office a particularly busy, but, potentially, a very effective one.

Letters to the editor Perhaps Goch could ask council Editor, The Times: In response to Byron Goch’s letter to the editor published in the Oct. 22 issue of the Boundary Creek Times, in which he asked why the same people are

still on the Greenwood recreation commission, perhaps, instead, he should be asking why council has not appointed any of the nine individuals whose names I put forward six weeks ago as possible new members. I do not live in Greenwood city, so I cannot and do not

vote for or against council, though I will be at the next meeting of council and if they have not or do not appoint all or some of them I will ask again why not, or, perhaps, Mr. Goch should be asking that question himself. Leslie Goddard, Greenwood

Great start to school ANDREW TRIPP

Boundary Creek Times Reporter

Superintendent feels excitement School Superintendent Kevin Argue spoke of his excitement over the commencement of the school year, particularly in light of last year’s teachers’ strike, and described the high level of energy he and Director of Learning Doug Lacey felt in all of the buildings they visited during the first weeks of school. Argue highlighted his recent visit to Boundary Central Secondary School, where he was impressed with the full and varied itinerary scheduled that day. The morning saw students and staff competing in an inaugural Terry Fox Run, which was followed by a staff-prepared turkey lunch, an all-candidates forum and capped off by a teachers’ non-instructional duty session. Argue noted B.C. Teachers’ Federation representative Norm Sabourin’s impassioned speech about Terry Fox that got participants motivated to complete the run/walk and donate to the Terry Fox foundation. New hirings Twelve new teachers have been hired in the district, along with 34 support workers, which the superintendent is also very pleased about. statement for digital learning in the district, which will see professional development for teachers as the effort’s first major step. The board also updated the district’s proposed implementation of Microsoft’s Office 365 and its One Drive storage service, which allows students the ability to store their own information on a secure server. One Drive allows for storage and access of data on any type of digital device, which would be particularly beneficial to students sharing iPads. It was noted, however, that parental support for the One Drives account was not universal, so alternative data storage methods were being explored for those preferring not to access the One Drive option. The next SD51 board meeting will be on Nov. 10 at the district office in Grand Forks.

student’s learning. These processes are planned and adapted to support the pursuit of personal goals in changing learning environments. With the pending introduction of a new B.C.-wide school curriculum, this initiative takes on added importance and relevance, as 2016 will see teachers afforded greater flexibility in their content delivery and assessment. Students learning will be more closely matched with their individual strengths and needs as they develop the three core competencies as identified by the B.C. Ministry of Education: communication, thinking, and personal and social competency. Within their school growth plan, Lautard and Bond have worked in concert to encourage teachers to use project-based learning in their classrooms. Through Bond’s coaching, which began last year, teachers can discover how to better connect with students and more precisely identify their needs. “The concept of self-regulated learning helps kids connect not only with themselves, but with their communities and universally,” Bond said. The inquiry period for staff and students is under way, as schools embark on a journey of understanding and implementation of self-regulated learning.

Seniors’ group to host AGM The current term of the Greenwood Senior’s executive expires on Dec. 31 of this year, and a new board will be elected at the group’s annual general meeting starting at 2 p.m on Nov. 2. A list of all positions was posted at the organization’s last meeting on Oct. 5. Current president Leslie Goddard is asking all of those interested in running for the board to add their names to the list, indicating which position they are interested in assuming.

Goddard has voiced his concern that nobody will run for the executive, in which case the organization would simply not be able to function. “If nobody will stand for the executive then from what I have found out we will have to close the doors and shut down,” Goddard said. “I for one will not run against any one for president and my wife will not run against any one for thrift shop coordinator. As for the last two members of the

executive who resigned claiming they cannot work with the current executive, I encourage them to come and put their names forward and take over the board.” Goddard said he was frustrated by the reluctance of many of the club’s members to help out, noting that if all the members worked one day, they would be working only a single day each month. Elections will begin immediately upon the conclusion of the AGM at approximately 2:30 p.m.

“Imagine a river of dreams. A river which embodies the spiritual essence of every river human beings have encountered over thousands of years. “True, every river radiates a distinct individual personality, yet they also share a common magic, an incredible ability to act as Muse for the works of countless artists. Musicians, painters, dancers and writers have created the most amazing works through the direct influence of rivers upon them.” So says John Hibberson, the director of Midway...and Beyond Little Theatre talking about his latest project, River of Dreams scheduled for performance Nov. 4 in the Midway Community Hall. “We happen to live in a very special locality, the West Boundary. “Writer Norman Maclean states in his famous novel, ‘Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.’ Nothing is closer to the truth when we think of our own river, the Kettle. “It has faithfully nourished our land’s First Peoples, settlers, and present inhabitants throughout our history here together. I’ve lived in the beautiful West Boundary for 26 years and have done many jobs from driving logging & freight trucks, ranching, saddle and boot making to purchasing a building in Greenwood and opening up a western shop. As I had a lifelong interest in real estate, I decided to get my license. I enjoy working with a variety of people and there is no greater satisfaction than seeing a happy buyer or seller!

Working for you with honesty and integrity!

I’ve been a Journeyman Electrician Red Seal since 1969. I grew up in Winnipeg and worked throughout Manitoba, Sask, Ontario and Alberta. I fell in love with B.C., especially the Boundary and we moved to Grand Forks in 1992 where I started up my business. In 2000 we moved to the West Boundary to fill the void that existed there. As well as holding an electrical contractors license I also hold tickets for fire alarm installations, inspections and certifications. I run a small crew of two and myself.
