Purica Adrenal Support helps the body to better handle stress; reduces cortisol production and stimulates the immune system.

Super Lysine+: Cuts Cold Sore Time in Half

What is adrenal exhaustion? Although the adrenal glands form part of the HPA axis (a complex set of relationships and signals between the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the adrenals), the adrenal glands themselves are situated far away from the brain— just above the kidneys. (The word “adrenal” is Latin for near the kidneys.)

Quantum Health

QUANTUM HEALTH IS DEDICATED TO providing high quality, science-based products that improve the quality of life. Super Lysine+ is made with 14 nutrients including lysine, propolis, olive oil, vitamin e and more, super lysine+ is north america's leading herb/ nutrient based cold sore treatment. Super lysine + brings fast relief from the pain, burning and itching while helping clear up your cold sore in half the time.

Super Lysine+

These important glands secrete aldosterone, which is integral to the proper functioning of the kidneys, but they also play an important role in many of the body’s systems. When we are stressed, the hypothalamus sends a signal to the pituitary to “message” the adrenal glands, which instantly release stress hormones. The most significant of these are adrenaline and cortisol.

NOW ON SALE

The purpose of these stress hormones is to help us in times of true emergency (the fight or flight response), but their constant secretion can exert a profoundly negative effect on the body. Over time, the adrenals themselves become stressed, leading to a range of symptoms collectively known as adrenal exhaustion.

Try Lorna's Four Steps to Beautiful Skin, Hair & Nails

While the symptoms of adrenal exhaustion vary from person to person, they most commonly involve the inability to sleep, fatigue, lack of energy in the mornings and/ or afternoons, increase in energy in the late evenings, irritability, cravings for sweet foods, weight gain and a weakened immune response.

Here’s the thing, experts believe that up to 65% of cancer can be prevented through diet and lifestyle. This means that we are not powerless!

Eat organic as much as possible Organic food protects us from exposure to hormonedisrupting pesticides. Israel’s breast cancer rate dropped 8% after they banned the use of certain pesticides. The environmental working group provides some guidelines for being an informed consumer of organic food. You can find their “clean fifteen, dirty dozen” list online. Make some vegetarian choices Science is clear that a plant based diet reduces the risk of all female cancers. Replace some of the meat in your diet with plant based protein such as legumes, lentils, organic soy, nuts and seeds. Try incorporating “meatless Monday” into your family’s weekly routine.

While you cannot avoid every genetic or environmental risk, you can be proactive about cancer prevention by being conscious of the food you eat. Food is medicine, and an optimal diet will nourish the immune system, prevent inflammation, encourage healthy detoxification and promote hormone balance. Not only can this help to prevent cancer, but it can also reduce inflammatory conditions, cardiovascular health and overall wellbeing. Take an ounce of prevention each day by including the following foods:

Eat more fruits and veggies Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and plant nutrients that strengthen our immune system, reduce inflammation and reduce cancer risk. Include a rainbow of colors and aim for at least 8 servings per day (1 serving is equal to ½ cup veggies or 1 cup salad). Include choices rich in beta-carotene (carrots, squash and yams), flavonoids (berries, parsley and citrus) and lycopene (tomatoes). Chew on cruciferous Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale and bok choi are part of the cruciferous family of vegetables. They are superstars when it comes to women’s health! Cruciferous vegetables contain phytonutrients that support the liver in clearing out circulating estrogen as well as protect the body from cancer causing chemicals.

Healthy fats The Canadian Cancer Society recommends limiting fat intake, as a high fat diet has been found to increase the risk of many cancers. Rather than viewing fats as “bad” perhaps the conversation we should be having is about the quality of fats. Saturated animal fats increase the risk of female cancers, while olive oil and omega 3 EFA’s have been shown to be protective. Eat less meat and dairy, and include olive oil, cold water fish, purified fish oil, flax oil, avocado, nuts and seeds. Fiber up A fiber rich diet protects women in multiple ways. For starters, fiber acts like a broom in the digestive system to sweep out excess estrogen and other metabolic waste from the system. Fiber also serves to improve blood sugar balance which we know is associated with a decrease risk for breast cancer. Consume a variety of fiber including fruits, veg, whole grains, nuts, seeds, ground flax seeds and psyllium. Keep blood sugar stable A diet high in processed foods, sugar and flour stimulate the release of insulin and insulinlike growth factors which are major stimulators of growth for many cancers. Sugar feeds cancer. Feed your sweet tooth less often, and instead opt for a whole foods diet rich in whole grains, beans, veggies, protein and healthy fats. Optimize your weight Being overweight is a risk factor for most cancers. Fat cells are capable of producing estrogen, and also promote inflammation in the body. Make lifestyle changes to increase activity level, get adequate sleep, reduce stress and eat a balanced diet. Find a health care practitioner who can help you create a customized plan. Limit alcohol The research is clear that the more alcohol you consume, the higher the cancer risk for women. Vitamin D More research is needed to confirm the relationship between vitamin D and breast cancer risk. What we do know is that vitamin D is essential for our immune system, and it is our immune system that is the first line of defence for eradicating cancer cells. I recommend vitamin D3 supplementation during the winter months in order to prevent deficiency. Eat “super foods” In addition to a whole foods diet, spice up your diet with the following super foods: turmeric to reduce inflammation, ground flaxseeds to promote hormone balance, seaweed for thyroid health, garlic for liver support, shiitake mushrooms for immune strength, and green tea for cancer prevention.

ictoria’s Towers and Trees started as Adrian Chalifour’s solo project and quickly ballooned to a large band with Chalifour, Ben Lubberts, Dave Zellinsky and Donovan Rush at its core. “We had saxophone player, a fiddle player and for certain songs a horn player, so yeah there was like eight or nine over the course of the night, that’s how it started,” says Chalifour, describing the first show at Canoe Brewpub in September 2012. The show was a CD release party for the band’s first album Broken Record which held the key to Chalifour’s life as a musician – the breakout hit Montreal. Now 31, Chalifour married at 22 and moved to Kamloops with his wife. “That’s kind of where the song Montreal came from because it was always my dream to leave Victoria. I was born and raised here, I wanted to finish university and leave, go out east, move to either Ottawa or Montreal, somewhere that I could speak French and play some music,” he says. “I didn’t do that. I chose this other route, I ended up in Kamloops – which is sort of the antithesis of Montreal – and after being there about a year-and-a-half … I just couldn’t reconcile Towers and Trees that lost part of my idenGarage tity.” Showroom, In a frustrated state Duncan Dec. 4 he wrote Montreal and

A

t 72, Billy Connolly has had surgery for prostate cancer and in 2013 was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but the actor, comedian and musician still finds plenty to laugh at. “I talk about it on the stage. In a funny way it helps to get rid of it,” he says in a faded Glaswegian accent. “When you talk about it, it gets it off your back. You know that way, like, if you have a problem and you write it down it kinda takes it away from you. Well comedy is like that. When you talk about it, it temporarily removes it from you. That’s not why I do it, I just found that’s one of the side effects.” Connolly’s been living in New York for the past decade, and continues to tour and travel as much as he did when he was younger. “I’ve done it all my adult life so it’s kind of normal to me. I remember reading about a girl rock singer in the ‘90s and she said, ‘I’ve been on the road for two weeks I’m exhausted, I need a holiday.’ Oh Lordy – she’s got a lot to learn,” he says with a laugh. Connolly’s High Horse Tour began in mid-October in Toronto and brings him to Victoria for two shows Nov. 3 and 4. “I like the journey to Victoria across the water,” he says. “I always hope to see an orca and I’ve never seen one.” Travel is one of his passions and he’s been able to make it part of his career as well. His television series Journey To The Edge Of The World brought him here via the Northwest Passage in 2008. “I didn’t realize how massive Canada was. I realized of course, it was a big place but when you actually cover it from the Yukon it’s an extraordinary size of a place – but nobody’s there.” Recalling the journey, he says the wildlife made a great impression on him. “We were in the forest in the Yukon, they gave me a thing to scare bears away. It’s about the size of a fountain pen – have you ever seen them? It fires a cartridge, High Horse Tour and he says, …” Connolly begins to giggle. “He Nov 3 and 4 ‘make sure the carat the Royal Theatre says, tridge lands between you rmts.bc.ca and the bear, because if

it lands behind it, it’ll chase it towards you,’” he continues laughing … “Then when I was camping they give me an aerosol to frighten the bears off, which I’m sure doesn’t frighten them one little, bloody bit.” His most recent travel adventure took him around the United States in a four week journey by train for an upcoming BBC series titled Tracks Across America. He particularly enjoyed a stop at Louisiana’s bayou. “It’s startlingly beautiful. There was pink birds and fish leaping out of the water, it was just an extraordinarily beautiful place. …They’ve got cougars and bears and antelope and stuff. I thought it was all reptiles and strange things in the night, but it isn’t. I thought it would be things slithering up the boat and giving us all frights, but it isn’t. They’ve got those Chinese carp that leap out of the water and they jumped into the boat and all that – it was a scream.” He would, however, rather be chased by bears than trolls on social media. “I was being attacked by three guys and I just decided I didn’t need it in my life,” he says of his Twitter account that has been dormant for more than two years. “This is a cowardly thing too. They know you can’t get them, you can’t go and kick their asses no matter what they say to you. I always get the feeling they’re sitting in their underwear in their mother’s basement.” When he’s not on the road touring or filming, he enjoys simple pleasures such as reading, quiet din-

ners with friends and watching Alone on the History Channel. “Even in Vancouver, I didn’t realize it was so wild. With bears and lions and all that. … I saw it on TV, with those guys who were isolated there. … You should see it, the bears are unbelievable, those pumas and things – Jesus – cougars.” Told a cougar was captured in Victoria recently, Connolly replied: “Well there you go! You could be shopping in Victoria and a lion’s chasing you down the street.”

earching for the perfect gift to make your loved one feel special? Why not give them a gift they can use all year, something to help them unwind from stressful days, or to make them feel more beautiful? There are dozens of choices that will fill the bill and make your shopping easy. First, ask yourself a few questions: does he or she go to the gym regularly? Do they like spa treatments or manicures? Do they buy organic veggies or take health supplements? Not sure? Try a little snooping on social media. Check out their likes and who they follow. Do they post photos of healthy meals, workout tips or aromatherapy ideas? A six month or year-long pass to their favourite workout spot will please any fitness buff. Workout clothes are also an essential for these

folks, so a gift certificate for their favourite exercise gear is also a great choice. For those who like to relax or pamper themselves, try a gift certificate for a massage attached to a mini massage ball; or take a risk and pick a wild nail colour and attach it to a certificate for a mani-pedi. For the health food fanatic, give a juicer or blender along with a basket of fresh, organic kale and lemons. Whatever you decide, a feel-good gift is a great way to show you care about the health and wellness of your loved one.

Against all odds

T

he videographer slams the brakes on the truck when he spots the tree on the rock. Its tall trunk seems to be growing out of a large rock despite a lack of soil or any sign of roots. Unfortunately, the owner of the Haultain Street property isn’t home. So we leave and continue our search for a story for the end of the six o’clock news. We drive around for two unsuccessful hours before I suggest we return to the tree. The videographer starts getting shots, including the large cracks that radiate from where the trunk appears glued to the rock. A few cyclists ride by. One woman suggests the tree “is from another planet.” Another declares its survival against all odds “is kind of inspiring.” Unfortunately, the property owner is still away – so we get ready to leave again. But just as we’re about to get back in the truck, I have an overwhelming urge to go for a walk instead. The videographer apprehensively follows, and 30 seconds later the owner pulls into her driveway. If I hadn’t listened to my gut we would have missed the story. Pili tells us that people ask her about the tree in the rock daily. She

says it began as a small sapling that her husband brought home unexpectedly. She didn’t want him to plant it in the yard because it would grow too big and be too messy. So she suggested he place it on the rock instead, where she assumed it would die. Despite decades of no special treatment, it’s thriving. Pili calls it “amazing.” Then – just as we’re getting ready to leave for the third time – Melissa walks by. She tells us she grew up next door to the tree-on-therock and just happened to visit this afternoon because she says, “when I really feel like thinking, I go and sit there.” And if there was ever a time that Melissa could benefit from being with the tree, it’s now. “It’s been a really tough year,” she says.“I’m trying to figure out what to do with my life.” ADAM SAWATSKY Melissa climbs up to the top of the rock and reveals she’s been deal@CTVNewsAdam ing with death, illness and the expectations of family and friends. Penny Pitcher Esperanto Lily

With more than 140 entries to Monday Magazine’s 15th annual photo contest, co-hosted with the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, selecting the winners in six categories was no easy task. Island photographers have once again proven themselves a talented lot! Fortunately our judges, Jennifer Paquet, director of the Integrate Art Society and Andrew Paquet, owner of Andrew Paquet Photography were up to the task, lending a creative eye to this year’s entries and narrowing the submissions to stand-out images in the categories of: Colour – General; Black and White – General; Technology and Innovation (computer manipulation allowed); Reflection and Realization; The Bizarre and Surreal; and Consumption and Sustainability. The Monday Magazine Photo Contest is Victoria’s longest-running photography competition. All entries will be posted in the CACGV space on the third floor of the Bay Centre until Nov 18. Can’t catch it before then? All prize winning photographs will be also be displayed at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill Nov. 19 to Dec. 18.

The man who talks to GHOSTS LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com

The first time spirit spoke to James Van Praagh as an adult it scared him silly. He had left his native New York to live in Los Angeles with the goal of becoming a sitcom writer and was bouncing from job to job. A co-worker took him to meet medium Brian Hurst who had a message for him. “As I walked in the door, the man looked at me and said: ‘You’re a medium and the spirit world are going to use you in two years time to help change the consciousness of the planet.’ And I thought this guy was crazy – the typical New Yorker in me who moved to California thinking this guy’s – you know – California people are fruits and nuts,” he says with a laugh. The meeting left an impression and the young man’s curiosity was piqued. He began meditating and reading books on psychic phenomenon. Van Praagh, now 57, says he began seeing spirits as a child. “I used to see things spontaneously, very much like the movie the Sixth Sense, but very positive images, never negative images. My mother said those are God’s angels, I never thought anything of it, children … what they see, they don’t judge.” In his late 20s he was working in a TV studio; one day he returned from lunch along with a co-worker. “I walked into my cubical, my co-worker walked into hers and I looked over and saw her dead grandmother standing

Homemade Cottage Pie helps take the chill off autumn days.

Fall brings comfort food & friends

T

his past month I’ve eaten two fantastic Thanksgiving feasts, neither of which I was required to cook, being invited to a casserole dinner, and shared new fall menu pizzas with new friends at Prima Strada. As we move into fall comfort foods, somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas we scoff at eggnog in the grocery store and buy the last of the local tomatoes instead, in silent protest. So when it feels like summer has slipped away,

think of the warmth and comfort of sharing the table with friends. A comfort food staple at our house is beef cottage pie (a Shepard’s Pie is traditionally made with lamb). Use leftover (I make them in big batches to have leftovers) or make fresh mashed potatoes. Dice an onion into small pieces, sauté in butter and olive oil over medium heat until it’s clear, add a few cloves of minced garlic, season with salt and pepper. Add one or two pounds of lean ground beef depending on how large of pie you want, and cook through. Add more salt and pepper and your favourite seasonings for beef, I use a couple of tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, and some chili oil. Simmer a few minutes, then deglaze the pan using about half a cup of beer, red wine, or broth. Simmer until it reduces by half, sprinkle in a few tablespoons of arrowroot powder or flour. Stir until it forms a thick gravy that binds the meat together. I’ve used two ways to assemble it. Either butter, then spread a thin layer of breadcrumbs into the bottom of a pie dish, pat the potatoes in to form a bottom crust, fill the dish with the beef mixture, and add a layer of potatoes on top; or, skip the bottom crust and layer the beef under a potato top. Leave it rustic with rough peaks, cover

with breadcrumbs and grated cheese (I use Parmesan), or not, and bake at 350º for about 30 to 40 minutes or until the top browns. I serve it topped with peas and gravy. (Save and freeze gravy for this next time you make some). When you need rest from comfort food missions in your own kitchen, try Padella Kitchen + Wine for housemade pasta, Pagliacci’s for live music with dinner Sunday to Wednesday 8 to 10pm, The Hot And Cold Cafe for vegan yellow coconut curry and other great bowls and sandwiches, or J&J Wonton Noodle House for Chinese food made with local ingredients. Try it, you’ll like it: • Cold Comfort Ice Cream - storefront in Fernwood, pints at select retailers around town. Pumpkin and other seasonal flavours, this is Victoria’s best ice cream. • Phillips Brewing - Snowcase craft beer advent calendar is back, and a new Dare Devil Orange Cream Soda from Phillips Soda Works. • Hide and Seek Coffee - a new cafe opening soon in Oak Bay. • La Taqueria Pinche Taco Shop, my favourite Vancouver taco shop, opening a location soon on Fort Street downtown.

Lucky Vancouver Island is overflowing with new distilleries. Here is a round up of a few of the new darlings, the lounges where you can find them and the stores where you can buy them. After launching in 2014, Ampersand is already known for its gin which can be had at Little Jumbo, the new Northern Quarter and the slightly more remote Wild Mountain in Sooke. Ampersand Gin is my go to for a Martini – classic botanicals are used and it’s well balanced. The gin can be bought at the Duncan Market or if that’s too much of a trip our local Cascadia stores keep it in stock. Keep an eye out: Ampersand launched its Per Se Vodka at Art of the Cocktail and word is it will be available soon. Most of the new distilleries are doing vodka and gin to start but Sheringham, located in Shirley, went in a different direction and has produced William’s White a clear (un-aged) whisky along with a vodka. Smith’s Pub, Brasserie L’école and The Churchill are serving Sheringham spirits and the go to stores are the either Spinnaker’s Spirit stores or the Cork and Barrel. And then there is De Vine, an established vineyard, which has recently made a foray into the distillery world. Producing two styles of gin based on grapes, including barrel-aged New Tom Gin which riffs on what was an almost extinct spirit that is now making a comeback. Old Tom dates back to the 18th century but fell out of favour until recently (even Tanqueray has introduced one). It’s slightly sweeter and richer than regular gin and is certainly worth an exploration. It’s available at the distillery on Old West Saanich Road and I’m hoping to find it in cocktail bars soon. You will find the spirits at other restaurants and private liquor stores but suggestions noted will give you a good jumping off point.

I was so excited when I got to connect with Leilani Evans the owner and designer of the Bohemian inspired clothing line WAWAHA. Leilani and I met ages ago in elementary school and I was given the opportunity to reconnect with her at Fashion Splash in August. I fell in love with her collection and the inspiration behind her brand. I sat down with Leilani for a short interview to find out more about why she started WAWAHA and her design process. thought I would share a cheap and cheerful SHERI PETERSoN do-it-yourself project that can make a big impact sheripinteriordesign.com on any room. We all don’t have big budgets for refurnishing or replacing worn out or dated furniture and sometimes all that needs to be revitalized is a table or a chair to change a room. This recently happened to me. I was hosting a wedding shower at my home and some of my furniture predates my own wedding – 22 years ago. I wanted to get a new end/lamp table as my old second hand one was in really bad shape. I went to A French Touch, 1850 Oak Bay Ave., and purchased some Chalk Paint™. The owner Debra, told me exactly how to paint my dark mahogany table to give it new life. All I can say is wow, it turned out fabulous! It took me two afternoons, about $80 in supplies and it totally changed the look to revamp this tired, dated lamp table. The game changing things I learned about Chalk Pain is that it can be used to revamp anything. Wood, lampshades, picture frames, leather, vinyl, fabric, wicker, metal, tile, and the list goes on. They also put on workshops, what a fun afternoon with girlfriends. I then ventured across the street to Good Things, household consignments, at 1841 Oak Bay Ave. just to see what would be fun to revitalize with the Chalk Paint. I found cool old picture frames, mirrors, accent and dining chairs, tons of lamps and shades, wicker, great accent pieces from the ‘70s and ‘80s. I truly loved looking at the different shapes and textures of things, imagining what they’d look like in a different colour. I can’t wait to Chalk Paint something else now, a whole new world has opened up. Turn an old relic Sheri Peterson has been an interior into a fashion designer for 22 years in Victoria. osting a holiday party can be a breeze if you book ahead and take your staff or group to a local pub or restaurant. Places like the Irish Times and 10 Acres are not only fun to drop by for social nights out with friends or a quick business lunch, but they make great options for smaller groups and big parties as well. The Irish Times’ O’Hagan’s Snug seats six with quick access to the bar, while the second floor mezzanine can host up to 100 guests and up to 20 can party by the fire in McCarthy’s Snug. “You can book out the whole room during the week,” says Nancy Stewart, G.M. of the Penny Farthing. The Bard and Banker can host groups from 50 to 150 and up with live music every night. Oak Bay’s Penny Farthing is another fun spot to take a group. “We can put 50 on the private patio which is heated and covered, it has a nice atmosphere and a couple of dart boards,” says Stewart. They can also rent out the back of the pub and accommodate up to 150 people. “We have live music on the weekends and we can order canapés from Vis a Vis, which is next door, they offer more upscale appetizers – our chef Will Willgress is fabulous – he makes great food.” There are plenty of options for food as well, though most opt for trays of canapés which are passed by servers, meals can also be arranged. “It all depends on what you want,” says Stewart. “If you want to mix and mingle and have a little bit of food or have a formal sit down dinner.”

Drinks can also be controlled with a ticket system or an open bar can be arranged. “We do it all for you, we have live music, or great recorded music through our sound system. It’s a fun environment and you don’t have to clean up!” At the freshly revamped Pescatores, groups can choose from The Commons and the Kitchen, two unique experiences under the same roof. The Commons has indoor seating for 120 and outdoor seating for 60 on the patio looking across at Victoria’s bustling Inner Harbour, while the Kitchen offers a more upscale experience. Over at 10 Acres, where the food is fresh from the farmer’s field, groups of up to 96 can gather and enjoy a unique West Coast experience. “We even have options for people who want to do luncheon Christmas parties,” says 10 Acres manager Danielle De Kay. “We’ve also had a few parties that start at 3 o’clock and go from 3pm to 6pm or 3pm to 8pm, so they let out early. Sometimes it’s not realistic to ask people to work an eight hour day then come to a six hour Christmas party.” 10 Acres offers three areas for parties including on the patio. “We keep it open year round, it’s heated and is covered with canvas sails we can strap down, when we turn on the heat out there it’s super toasty, and it’s such a pretty space at night,” says De Kay. Add some Christmas trees and decorations along with Happy Hour pricing on the bar and all your staff party Christmas wishes have come true.

om Hanks playing the most hated man in America? What sounds wildly implausible makes perfect sense in Bridge of Spies, the Cold War spy thriller elegantly directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on true events, Hanks plays James Donovan, an accomplished and highly ethical lawyer who is asked to defend Rudolph Abel (Mark Rylance), a British-born agent caught spying for the Russians on American soil. The idea is that the United States judicial system must look impartial even as it trots Abel through the courts en route to the hangman. But Donovan takes the promise of a fair trial seriously, and his spirited defence infuriates many Americans: they’re terrified of nuclear war with the Soviets and regard the principled lawyer as a commie-loving traitor.

Independent Films Winter is so close that thoughts turn indoors with an expectation of great movies that come out before the year end. While at the Toronto International Film Festival there were some thrilling new finds that I hope will come to our fair city. Keep an eye peeled for Atom Egoyan’s latest, Remember, featuring Christopher Plummer. Egoyan is back on his game with this suspenseful Hitchcockian thriller. Speaking of Hitchcock, a new doc directed by Kent Jones, Hitchcock/Truffaut is a brilliant look at the week-long interview that Truffaut conducted with the master after he realized, quite wrongly, Hitch was considered an entertaining director rather than the key influencer he was. Footage with current indie darlings like Wes Anderson, David Fincher and Richard KATHY KAY Linklater, along with an almost unrecognizable Paul Schrader makes for a relevant film. Final choice from TIFF is The @VicFilmFestival Lobster, a polarizing film that, at the very least, will stand you on your head.

Abel is found guilty, but Donovan suggests that the judge abstain from the death penalty – a live enemy agent could be useful for trading purposes should the Russians ever get their hands on an American spy. Eventually, Donovan’s prediction comes true, when U2 pilot Gary Powers gets shot down over Russia while taking reconnaissance photos at 70,000 feet. Donovan had developed a rapport with Abel, and he is asked by the CIA to “informally” negotiate with the Russians when they start hinting about a swap. The negotiations are to be held in East Germany, right at the time the Berlin Wall is being built. It’s crazy dangerous, but Donovan, acting as a private citizen, agrees – well aware he’s crossing over into an essentially lawless communist state with no protection and no clear idea of who he’s dealing with and what their real agenda might be. It’s a quietly fascinating espionage story, set in a recent past that is brought marvelously to life by Spielberg. All the period details ring true, from the cars and clothes to people’s attitudes. Screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen add sly wit to much of the dialogue. And the extended sequence in East Berlin – filmed in drab shades of gray during winter, and fraught with ever-mounting tension as Donovan finds himself in tricky, simultaneous negotiations with both the Russians and East Germans – is a master class in

Bridge to the Oscars

Tom Hanks stars as lawyer James Donovan in the Cold War spy thriller Bridge of Spies.

how to build suspense. The Spielberg of Jaws and Jurassic Park has mostly left behind his amusement-ride movies in favour of weightier, historically themed films such as Amistad and Lincoln. Spies is very much one of the best of these. Add in Oscar-worthy performances by Hanks and the little-known Rylance and this is must-see cinema. COMING SOON: Spotlight

Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci star in the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered a massive, decades-long scandal of child molestation and cover-up perpetrated by the local Catholic Church.

Legend

The visceral and brilliant British actor Tom Hardy does a gory two-fer by playing twin gangsters the Kray brothers, notorious London villains from the ‘60s who often used swords when striving to make a point.

Sisters

On a lighter note, the deliciously goofball duo of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are reunited in a comedy where two sisters throw one last house party before their parents sell the family home. What could go wrong?

The Danish Girl

Eddie Redmayne will doubtless turn a few heads in this provocative account of Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer from nearly a century ago. Directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech).

Your stars for November 2015

horoscope Aries (March 21-April 19)

because other people will benefit you in the month ahead. Study these relationships to discover how well you fill their needs and how well they fill yours.

and activities with children. And because there is such an emphasis on social fun: dating, flirtations, and love affairs will be tops on your menu.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You will explore hidden aspects of yourself. You might do some soul searching or psychological self inquiry. You might also contact someone who helps you do this. You will have a desire to experience life on a level that is real and not just superficial. You might also encounter someone who challenges your values. Midst all this desire to become a better person, your passions will be ignited, especially sexually. Woo, woo!

It’s good news for you this month because the shift of the Sun will energize you big time! Suddenly, you will want to tackle everything around you to make your life run more efficiently. You will figure out what tasks need to be done and you will do them. You will want to manage your life in a way that makes every action account. This quest for efficiency will also apply to your health. You will want to eat a more healthy diet and exercise more. (Practice safe eating. Always use condiments.)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

The Sun is as far away from you as it can get all year. Since the Sun is your source of energy, this means you will be more tired than usual. You will need more sleep and more rest. However, this is not the time to go it alone. Au contraire, you will benefit most by working with others and even consulting with experts

November is one of the happiest months of the year for you because your focus will be on fun activities – theatre, arts, sports, parties, playful times with kids and romance! You will want to have a good time; and your life will feel more lighthearted and fun loving. Many of you will have a stronger focus on children

As the Sun shifts into the sign of Scorpio, for Leos, this heralds an increased focus on home, family and personal life. Not only will you be involved with parents and family more than usual, you will also want to retreat or withdraw. You will enjoy cocooning at home among familiar surroundings. These moments will give you a warm feeling in your tummy. In this respect, you will use this quiet time to regenerate and catch up on things that have gotten out of control.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

November will create an accelerated daily pace. Suddenly, your schedule will be jam-packed with appointments, conversations with everyone, increased interaction with siblings, relatives and neighbours, short trips plus more reading, writing and studying. So much to do! So little time! This is also an excellent time to have important discussions with others, especially to tell others how you feel about something.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your focus turns to money, cash flow, earnings and major purchases. As you ponder your finances, you will tend to wonder if your financial situation is your true worth? Of course, you are not your bank account. You are where you eat and what you drive. (Kidding.) That’s why at a deeper level, you will ask yourself if you are actually putting your money on the right horse. In other words, do you really know what matters in life? Are your values wise and realistic?

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Happy Birthday! The Sun is in your sign for the first time in a year. Because the Sun is your source of energy, you’ll be energized! Also, the Sun will attract people and favourable circumstances to you. You will also be able to project yourself with more force and focus. Obviously, it behooves you to make the most of this opportunity. You will also be able to make a great impression on others, which is timely because this is going to be such a popular year for you!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Enjoy hanging out with friends and dealing with groups, because you will benefit from your relationships. This is not the time to go it alone – be open to what others can do for you. Naturally, this is a twoway street. Examine your friends. Do you hang out with quality people? It’s important to be aware that your friends influence your thinking, and anything that influences your mind, which makes your choices, will ultimately, influence your future. True dat.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The Sun is at high noon acting like a spotlight on you. And lo! This light is flattering! Since others see you in positive terms, they will ask you to take on new jobs. Just say yes because you don’t have to be a superhero to dazzle them. Meanwhile, this is the best month of the year to examine your life to see if you’re going in the direction you want to go. If you do want to change your direction, this is a good year because you will get support both financial and practical from others.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You will be keen to broaden your horizons to travel, study and meet people from other backgrounds this month. Because you want to expand your world, this is a good time to go back to school, sign up for a course, or do anything that offers you new, fresh and unfamiliar experiences. You want adventure! If you can travel please do so! Some will be more involved with the law than usual. Others will want to explore religious and spiritual paths.

The Sun is in a hidden part of your chart this month, which affects your subconscious. That means this highlights a hidden part of you. We all project a persona to the world of what we think we’re trying to do versus what we are actually doing. (Yeah, the old Queen of Denial bit.) Now your subconscious persona will be more public. Childish behaviours might trip you up. Because your personal year is coming to an end, use the next several weeks to plan how you want your new year to be different from last. Ideas?
