Mayor talks trade during trip to China I BILL MCKAY joins B.C. premier’s mission next week. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

Morning traffic melee

Southbound traffic stacks up on the Nanaimo Parkway Wednesday morning after four separate accidents occurred within minutes between Northfield Road and Third Street. Police at the scene of one of the crashes said problems started shortly after 8:30 a.m. when three vehicles collided in the left turn lane at Third Street. Other vehicles started colliding as they slowed and switched lanes on the wet road surface. No injuries were reported, but at least 10 vehicles collided over the two-kilometre stretch of road.

Parents worried closure could affect French program BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

French immersion parents expressed concern during a consultation meeting Tuesday about a possible program move. A proposal to close Woodlands Secondary School and send students to Nanaimo District could also see the French immersion program moved to John Barsby to make room in NDSS. Parents are concerned about a drop in enrolment due to the longer commute and thus less provincial funding. Jennifer Therriault, mother

of a Grade 9 French immersion student, said it’s likely she would enrol her child at Barsby, but wonders how many would follow. “If there was a large attrition rate, you might potentially lose the ability to have those courses that should be offered in French maybe not offered,” Therriault said. Nanaimo District is easy to access due to its proximity to Vancouver Island University and the aquatic and ice centres, said Therriault. Bernadette Lyons David has children at École Hammond Bay, an elementary French immersion school, and said

the high school program should be located at either its current spot or Wellington Secondary, as they are transportation hubs. “The French immersion elementary students come from all over Nanaimo,” said David. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said the right thing to do is to look into all of the concerns of the parents, including transportation. “Our staff is going to be, if they haven’t already, discussing with the [Regional District of Nanaimo] possible solutions to the concerns about transportation,” said Rae. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay wants to explore liquefied natural gas opportunities for Nanaimo and meet investors as he joins B.C. Premier Christy Clark on a trade mission in China next week. McKay is going on a nine-day trade mission to China Nov. 3-11, with Andre Sullivan, chairman of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, in an attempt to build relationships overseas and attract investment. The trip, which will cover Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai, is estimated to cost the city $15,000 and was announced Monday after an in-camera vote last week. McKay said he was invited by the B.C. Ministry of International Trade and investors and will join Clark, who is in China Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of a B.C.-Guangdong sister province agreement and promote exports in sectors like LNG and clean technology. Meetings will be held with the premier and independently, according to McKay, who said they have plans to talk to investors about real estate, hotels like the proposed Hilton, and Nanaimo’s readiness for external investment. will also be on the mission. “We want to see what opportunities there are going to be for LNG for Nanaimo. We also want to meet face-to-face with potential investment houses that have already expressed an interest in Nanaimo,” said McKay, who anticipates there will be a “tremendous” amount of LNG opportunities relating to construction, machining, parts and fabrication. Sullivan said he and the mayor will promote Nanaimo and try to open up dialogue about all the investment projects available, but he also cautions they can’t go there with expectations of making a deal. “We have to go there with expectations of furthering relationships to unlock these investment opportunities,” he said. “So we can’t go in there in an attempt to close the Hilton, or close the conference centre hotel or close the passenger ferry.” NEDC has budgeted $15,000 for the trip but Sullivan expects the total will come in around $10,000. This is the second trip by NEDC since 2014 and follows a bid postponed last August by the mayor to go to China. Only Coun. Jerry Hong voted against this mission, believing the discussion should have been held in public. He’s also uncomfortable sending the mayor off in a “last-minute rush” without enough information. “If the public were to ask me, what’s he going for? I don’t know. He’s going on a trade mission. That’s as much information as we were given,” he said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Harewood asks for skate park

I

By Tamara Cunningham the News BulletiN

It’s goals before numbers for Nanaimo city councillors, who want to talk strategic priorities ahead of the budget this fall. Nanaimo politicians expressed a need to come up with new goals and objectives before they dig into budget details during the city’s first meeting on the financial plan last week. The 2012 strategic plan expires this year.

Council wants to look at city’s strategic plan ahead of budget

PARK PROPOSAL could cost upwards of $750,000 and would feature BMX pump track.

Plans for a skate park at Harewood Centennial Park could be coming. The Howard Avenue park saw a number of improvements unveiled in July, including a new playground and mountain bike area, and the skate park is something requested by the public, according to Kirsty MacDonald, City of Nanaimo parks and open space planner. A report by MacDonald was presented to the commission on Wednesday (Oct. 28). It recommends the commission support allocating $10,000 from a $60,000 deferred revenue account and a $10,000 private contribution for site analysis and concept design for the skate park. MacDonald said the $60,000 is a community contribution from a rezoning application in Harewood and the city has been holding it for a project that has value to the Harewood neighbourhood. At this point, the city has no idea of the scope of the project and it wants to start preliminary design work, said MacDonald. “The neighbourhood has fundraised about $8,000 or $9,000 as well, so technically, there could be up to $70,000, but that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the big project and council hasn’t allocated any of that money yet,” MacDonald said. Peggy Lake, vice-president of the Harewood Neighbourhood Association, said the skate park will be located near the mountain bike trail at Harewood Centennial. She estimates it could cost in excess of $750,000, as the association is looking to add a pump track for BMX enthusiasts. “It’s for BMXers to ride on, made out of cement ... that will be a little bit extra for that, so I’m not sure what the total is going to be right now, but it’s going to be over $750,000,” she said, adding if the commission gives approval, the report would be forwarded to city council for approval. If the plan proceeds, Coun. Ian Thorpe, chairman of the parks and recreation commission, said completion of design plans and costing would be among the next steps. “There is money that has been set aside for that skateboard park and I see that [preliminary design work] as probably the next step in the development of the Harewood Park,” said Thorpe.

The City of Nanaimo has released budget highlights for 2016, showing a proposed 1.7-per cent tax hike and public engagement plan and no new services. City manager Ted Swabey called the budget supportable and hopes council gets through the process quickly to turn its attention to the core review. Coun. Bill Yoachim agreed on the need to look at a strate-

gic plan, pointing out there’s been no real conversations about council’s goals, while Coun. Diane Brennan said councillors should be prepared for the next budget meeting on Nov. 18 on priorities and what they want. “If we don’t know what we want to achieve, we won’t know if the budget

Seawall work begins

The seawall walkway and its parking spaces will soon be closed for construction to carry out Departure Bay beachfront upgrades. The work will begin in November and continue throughout the winter. Parking along Loat Street will be restricted at times during construction, but alternative parking will be available at the Departure Bay Activity Centre on Wingrove Street. The Kin Hut and playground will remain open, but to ensure public safety, Kin Hut, playground and beach access will be restricted and could change with construction activities. The city has contracted Knappett Industries to carry out the work. Due to the area’s cultural and heritage significance, archaeological consultants Millennia Research Ltd. and the Snuneymuxw First Nation will monitor construction work. in using public money for private institutions but he hopes for a new dialogue with the school. Coun. Mark Swain said for each resident it’s about $1.66 per year and $3.89 per year for each household. He’s happy to shell out that money to put the community on the map. Only Coun. Dot Neary was opposed. “Next year this will probably be a moot point because it will be a statutory exemption and it will go ahead regardless,” she said, referring to the provincial bill. “I don’t think that independent schools should be supported in this matter through the public purse.” Other organizations that will get a tax exemption next year include St. Philip’s bythe-Sea Anglican Church and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257.

Aspengrove School has rejoined the ranks of Lantzville’s tax-exempt properties. Lantzville politicians were near-unanimous Monday in adopting a bylaw that gives @ 5.83”w X 6”h the independent school a $5,980 tax break, the largest the district will grant next year. While a potential new B.C. bill, waiting on royal assent, could change the rules around tax exemptions, municipalities currently have the right to decide whether to give tax breaks to school playgrounds and parking lots. Last year council denied the school a

tax break, but agreed to put it back on the list for 2016 in a 6-1 vote. Dr. Drew Digny, chairman of the Aspengrove school board, presented to council Monday, pointing out that the school has a community-use agreement, is Lantzville’s largest employer, and tries to be a good neighbour. Aspengrove also has plans for a sports field, gym space and performAFD ing arts facility in the future. “A strong, internationally recognized independent school is one of the best tax revenue generators Lantzville could ever hope for,” he said. “We’d like to change our conversation to be one that’s forward-looking and find mutual benefits that working together can bring to our community.” Coun. Will Geselbracht said he was prepared to vote against the exemption because he5.83” doesn’t believe

Woodlands nears anniversary ISLAND EXPRESS BUS

School SeT to mark 60 years.

By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

When physical education and science teacher Bobbie Taylor walks the halls of Woodlands Secondary School she has no shortage of memories. It’s a place where she has spent a lot of time, first as a student, now as a teacher. Taylor first attended Woodlands as a student in the 1980s, but graduated from Nanaimo District Secondary School. As a student, she was heavily involved in sports, running on the cross-country team and playing soccer, basketball and volleyball. In 1994, Taylor found herself walking the halls of Woodlands as a teacher. “It definitely felt weird,” Taylor said. “I was often mistaken as a student, only being

six years out of high school.” While it may have felt weird at first, it didn’t take long for Taylor to become a part of the Woodlands community. “When I first came here, there were a lot of teachers that were my teachers and they made me feel super welcome,” she said. “It is like a family here.” Wo o d l a n d s S e c ondary School first

opened its doors in 1955. Among the s c h o o l ’s n o t a b l e alumni are jazz singer Diana Krall and city councillor Jerry Hong. In early February, the school will hold an open house to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The open house will feature a number of rooms dedicated to each decade of Woodlands history. Students and staff will also participate in a series of

sports and activities. “I am really thankful that ... some key stakeholders have put in an immense amount of time to create an opportunity to celebrate and we look forward to the celebration,” Taylor said. For longtime Woodlands teacher Gunnar Myhrer, it’s the school’s community feel and atmosphere that has kept him coming back year after year. “There are a number of us who have taught in the 20-year range together and it is all about relationships,” he said. There are no shortage of stand-out memories for Myhrer. However, he said he is proud of a tradition that Woodlands has during graduation ceremonies. “When the kids walk across the stage we read a little blurb about what they have done and what they hope to do and some of their goals,” he said. “That is a real personal thing.”

Trade mission needs trade-off The mayor’s mission to China needs to be a fair trade. Mayor Bill McKay, as well as Andre Sullivan, chairman of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, are heading to three Chinese cities next week to participate in a trade mission led by B.C. Premier Christy Clark and the province’s Ministry of International Trade. It’s an opportunity for the mayor to take care of some business that had been put off earlier this year, when he cancelled a planned trip to China to meet with potential Hilton hotel investors. In addition to that meeting, McKay will have a chance to co-operate with the next level of government in attempting to attract further investment in sectors such as liquefied natural gas. Perhaps just as importantly, our mayor has an opportunity to strengthen Nanaimo’s relationship with the premier and the province and raise the city’s profile, something that can only be beneficial. It might be unreasonable to expect the Nanaimo contingent to be able to close business deals on this hastily planned trip, and that’s problematic, because taxpayers expect – and deserve – something tangible when we foot the bill for this sort of travel. The NEDC will report on the trade mission when McKay and Sullivan return, so there will be some record of the trip’s success or lack thereof, whatever the case may be. This measure of accountability should always exist in municipal government and its bureaucracy. Networking conferences and professional development training, for example, probably cost the city more than we’d expect, and these expenses should be regularly scrutinized. We should expect a trade-off, at some point, from this trade mission to China. We’re hopeful that by paying this visit now, we will see visitors – and investors – reciprocate that visit tenfold, one hundredfold, or even more.

Transit requires local governments and riders to cover about half the cost. Indian Act reserves don’t pay. North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has noted that what people in remote communities ask for is a way to get back and forth for shopping and medical appointments. Yes, shopping is an important need, as those who live in remote areas can tell you. And Northern Health already runs a bus service for remote residents who need medical care. Rice’s observations at least move us toward practical solutions, although most of her effort seems directed toward political blame. I hope the infamous 36 pages of e-mails are eventually released, since they were not deleted but rather excluded from release. They may bring the discussion back to the actual public service issue, which is what realistic transportation options exist for these communities. ◆ Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

Canada’s centre-left parties should unite Uniting the centre left into, say, the Liberal Democratic Party is long overdue. The new party would more closely represent the Canadian electorate in values and parliamentary seats. NDP leader Tom Mulcair has lost close to 60 seats in this election so his position is very weak. Many centre-left voters would love to see this merger as it would end vote splitting and strategic voting in the future. It would also clearly illustrate Conservative strength and importance at about 30 per cent. Hopefully Justin Trudeau will find time for this later

Without releasing detailed costs of his platform, Trudeau has committed billions of dollars in spending on infrastructure, First Nations education, youth jobs and childcare benefits, all of which are worthy projects but will require increased taxes and a return to deficit spending in a time of global economic instability. These promises will increase government spending to the tune of billions of dollars and it may well be that the middle class gets stuck paying the bill. This will be no “sunny way.”

The long-awaited federal election has come and gone and we now have a new government and new prime minister. The tide came in for Justin Trudeau and went out for Stephen Harper, as is the way of our democracy. The question now becomes whether or not the electorate made an intelligent decision that will ultimately prove good for the country. Trudeau has made no less than 171 promises on important categories such as government, environment and security which until fulfilled are debts unpaid.

School district hypocritical Succession planning critical on high school programs To the Editor,

To the Editor,

Re: Threats of closure impact enrolment, Oct. 22. Let me try to get this straight, as it relates to School District 68 secondary schools: if Woodlands is closed (enrolment 514) it will lead to enhanced programming and greater support for students, i.e. students attending Nanaimo District Secondary School and Wellington. Does it follow in reopening Cedar (optimistic enrolment 250), it will lead to diminished

programming and less support for students at John Barsby and Ladysmith as well as Cedar? Of course. The school district is re-establishing an unviable secondary school. Cedar parents hoping their children might enter the trades or university have to consider making the effort to send them to a larger secondary school. Best wishes for those students having to attend Cedar.

Re: City manager resigns post, Oct. 27. This week’s announcement that both Ted Swabey, city manager, and Ian Howat, general manager of corporate services, are leaving the City of Nanaimo has brought many questions. The biggest of which is just how well did Swabey, Howat and Mayor Bill McKay do their jobs?

We all know that in any type of well-run organization, they plan for senior management change before it happens. They train the staff so that they can carry on with little or any disruption to the organization when there is a change. As one of my first bosses in management told me; it was his job to teach me so that within two years time I

could do his job better than him. He said that if I could not do it by then he would have failed in doing his job. We will soon see if these three managers did their jobs that the taxpayers of Nanaimo hired them to do or not. The results are on these three people’s shoulders and cannot be put on any one else’s.

S

ongs affect everyone differently. They can give solace when someone is going through a tough time and uplift a person’s spirit when they’re sad. Or a song can just be a tune to get up and dance to. Nanaimo born singer and songwriter Allison Crowe says she hopes her fans take whatever they need from her work and find their own meaning in her lyrics. Singing has always been a way for her to connect and share with people. “For me a lot of it is emotional. I think it is like having a conversation with people,” she said. Crowe is known for her intensely emotional performances. She doesn’t consciously think of what emotions to bring to the song during performances. It can depend on what kind of day she is having or what she is going through in her life, something completely different than when she wrote the song.

When she creates new songs and is writing the lyrics, sometimes something just hits her. “Sometimes halfway through I will find I am crying,” said Crowe. Crowe is excited to be returning to her hometown for a performance. “Maybe I’ll try out my fiddle. It should be a lot of fun,” she said. She performs at the Port Theatre Friday (Oct. 30) at 7:30 p.m. During previous shows in Nanaimo, Crowe performed solo, but this time she is coming with a band: Billie Woods, guitar; Celine Greb, cello; and Dave Baird, bass. own record label, Rubenesque Records Ltd. in 2001, she has released 15 albums. It has allowed her the freedom to create her work in her own way and explore a variety of genres including rock, folk and roots, broadway, jazz and others. Her newest album, Sylvan Hour, was recorded in one take during a performance in a log home on Salt Spring Island. “That’s what I prefer – I like that when I am listening to music. Solo live off the floor is the most natural,” she said. “I like listening to live recordings of songs. I love the energy of live.” Listening to a live performance can also reawaken memories in a person. For Crowe, one of her favourite bands is Pearl Jam and she likes listening to its live performances because it brings back memories. Crowe performs Friday (Oct. 30) at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Theatre. Tickets are $29 or $24 for students and seniors and are available by calling 250-754-8550 or visiting www.porttheatre.com. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Comedian Lorne Elliott has never been great at sports and he isn’t afraid to admit it. “My sports stories are all about personal failures in sports,” he said.“I don’t follow professional sports much at all, but I have a long history of being really lousy at any sport.” On Sunday (Nov. 1), Elliott will be cracking jokes at the Port Theatre. He’ll be touching on topics such as the recent federal election, weather and of course, sports. “I’ve got 40 years of material behind me. I’ve got this huge body of material that I can draw on,” he said. “The service that I am providing to the audience is selecting that lifetime of, hopefully, making people laugh, and shaping it into a show for Nanaimo.” Elliott’s pathway into comedy began more than four decades ago when he started writing and singing.

“I’ve written stuff since I was like 15 years old and I don’t know where that started,” he said. Elliott found himself performing as a folk singersongwriter at various bars and venues, where he would crack the occasional joke. “Being a singer-songwriter was the accepted form of self expression,” he said. “You could do it, you could get up there, write a few songs and the audience would fall in favour of them and you’d have a living.” But by the 1980s, Elliott was discovering that “people weren’t listening to the songs, they were listening to the jokes.” That’s when the Quebec native decided to focus more of his energy on comedy. “It was a normal set of choices for survival for me to get into comedy,” he said. “I guess I must have some sort of a feeling for it. I have always appreciated comedy.” Since then, Elliott has made a living as a comedian and musician. Elliott’s performance Sunday at the Port is at 12:30 p.m. For ticket information, please visit www.porttheatre.com.

Rock The ARTS performs superhero showdown. By RACHEL STERN The News BulleTiN

Superheroes can awaken a desire in children to learn about kindness, respect and compassion. Sarah Argue, owner and puppeteer with Rock the Arts, uses superhero puppets she creates to teach children that it’s what is beneath the mask and cowl that really makes a person super. This year Argue is performing at three Nanaimo elementary schools with her co-puppeteer Holly Greene, presenting the Superhero Showdown. The showdown has three main characters: Com, Pas and Sion. Their names represent one of the main themes of the show: compassion. “We really build characters for kids to fall in love with,” said Argue. “Even after we leave the show, they talk about the puppets they love.”

Rock The Arts owner and puppeteer Sarah Argue performs Superhero Showdown at Nanaimo elementary schools.

The superhero puppets explore what really makes a puppet, or a person, super with stories about compassion, kindness and perseverance. Argue was inspired by her godson to create Superhero Showdown. She felt the newer movie versions of Superman and Batman were too violent and wanted to make something more kid-friendly.

“After the show, we talk about the characters and what they have taught them,” said Argue. Each puppet is handmade by Argue and takes about 12 to 15 hours to complete. Argue comes to Nanaimo with her show today (Oct. 29) at Brechin Elementary School. The performances are open to the school children only. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Horror films sure to scare Short film aficionados looking for darker fare can get their horror fix during the Hub City Cinema Society’s Fall Film Showcase. The showcase is Monday (Nov. 2), 7 p.m. at the Vault Café and features 11 films by local filmmakers. Zachary Tannar, president of the Hub City Cinema Society, said for the last three years, the society has been showcasing local films. “Now it has all sort of come together

and it’s really awesome,” he said, adding the society can now have two film showcases a year. This showcase has a darker, more mature theme. Tannar said it’s about a PG-14 rating because there is violence, foul language and sexual themes in the films. The event features two films making a debut, Steven by Jason Oakley and The Normans by Angie Hawes. Suggested cover for the event is $10 at the door.

Family seeking assistance

conceRT helpS cover relocation costs from Uganda to Canada.

It took seven years for Nanaimo’s Bryan Gooden to get his family approved for residency in Canada. It was an emotional journey and a costly one. In 2008 Gooden travelled to Uganda to work with orphans through Shanti Uganda. While he was there, he met a woman named Juliet. “One thing led to another and we just fell in love,” said Gooden. He married Juliet in 2008. She already had two daughters, Jackie and Kate. And in 2010, the family welcomed baby Grace to the fam-

ily. Gooden’s family’s permanent residency was recently approved. However, the costs to bring the family members to Nanaimo exceeded the family’s resources. The fundraising concert is to help the family cover the debts connected to relocating the family to Canada. The concert is Sunday (Nov. 1), 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, located at the corner of Fitzwilliam and Wesley streets. Tickets are by donation at the door, with a suggested contribution of $10. The enter tainment lineup includes Sue and Dan Miron, Marty Steele, Anne Dalton and more. Styles range from everything from classical and Celtic to bluegrass and pop music.

Same Great Paper. Even More Convenient.

ART 10 features lorimer’s work until the end of October. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

The beach can be an inspiring place and for Nanaimo’s Barbara Lorimer, that’s exactly what it is. “I was born on the Prairies, but I have always lived on the Island and I have always loved the beach,” she said. Currently on display at the Art 10 Gallery inside the Nanaimo North Town Centre is Lorimer’s exhibit, Left Behind. The exhibit features nine acrylic paintings on two of her favourite things, the ocean and the beach. “I often do seascapes,” she said. Lorimer moved to Nanaimo in 1976 after living in Victoria. She took up painting in 2001 after seeing some paintings in a local gallery. “I thought I could do this, which sounds really vain, but I think that is what gets people interested in trying,” Lorimer said. “So I bought myself some paints and I started.” To d a y, L o r i m e r w o r k s mainly with acrylic and paints pictures of forests, rivers, oceans and beaches. She also

uses pastels to do portraits of people and pets. “I worked hard,” Lorimer said. “I often put in four or five hours and I like to work most days.” In 2007, Lorimer was a member of the Nanaimo Arts Council when she decided to join the Art 10 Gallery.

She says being a part of the gallery is special. “It is just a wonderful way to spend your time and it is nice to have like-minded friends to spend your time with,” she said. “Art 10 is like a club. We all enjoy each other and are encouraging.” arts@nanaimobulletin.com

WHY LATEX?

As a consumer in today’s marketplace I strive to purchase products that are made as close to home as I can get, items that are cleaner and greener, always with an eye on value. With over a quarter of a century in the sleep industry I’ve seen thousands of mattress fails and very few wins. One of those wins is good quality, natural, pure, Talalay latex which I get from Talalay Global (TG) who in my opinion produces the best product. side and medium on the other) with a 3” soft latex topper. This combination gives you the best of both worlds – supportive, and pressure relieving.

Here is a partial quote straight from TG on quality and purity: “Our Talalay Natural is the best latex being offered on today’s market. Our Talalay all natural formulation is made from 100% natural latex from the rubber tree and the only other properties added is needed for the vulcanization process. No latex foam in the market is completely made of all natural ingredients. All latex rubber needs additional sulfur, zinc oxide, and vulcanizing agents to be made into a usable form. TG also uses a natural, mineral reinforcing agent to improve the strength and durability of the product. On a volume basis, this material is less than 10% of the latex foam make up. Latex used is all natural latex. The product is washed after the vulcanization process to remove residual residues.”

Talalay vs. Memory foam. Of the top four mattress companies in the US, one spends more in annual advertising than the other 3 combined, and this company only makes memory foam beds. This is why we see so much hype about memory foam. While memory foam seems to be good at relieving pressure, it actually only works one dimension – you sink into it until you hit the firmer surface underneath. Latex is two-dimensional: it supports you while reducing pressure. At John’s our latex mattresses have a 6” medium and/or firm base (and yes, we can build you a mattress that is firm on one

Latex doesn’t sleep hot. “Too hot” is the biggest complaint I hear about memory foam. Memory foam requires body heat to collapse the foam cell structure in order to conform to your body curves; this collapse prevents air flow and traps body heat. This same process also creates a crater where you sleep, when you turn over the feeling is like rolling uphill leaving a hole behind. I’ve had many people tell me they wake up exhausted from this process. TG Latex is seven times more breathable than memory foam. Talalay latex is healthier. Our Talalay latex is harvested from rubber trees that create an inherently hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, mold and mildew resistant sleep environment that doesn’t off-gas like as memory foams can. Latex lasts longer. I have a sample of latex that was in a client’s favorite chair for 50 years and is still in pretty good shape (better shape than me at 50)! Latex from TG has been proven to last 20 times more than leading memory foam. Come and talk to our sleep specialists about your sleep needs. You can email me directly anytime. john@johnsbedrooms.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To Gaetan at The Bistro at Westwood Lake and Hilary of Sea Salt Food Company when they both stepped in and did an awesome job on very short notice to help us celebrate the life of my husband who recently died. BEEF To the dealership on its marketing gimmick, adding pressure to the planet’s dwindling supply of oil and metal by sending metal keys wrapped in a plastic shell to every household. BOUQUET To the News Bulletin for installing a paper box in our neighbourhood. Now those who want a paper can pick one up and save recycling. BEEF To the person complaining about kids in restaurants. If you don’t like it, I suggest you dine in at home. All the restaurants in Nanaimo are family based. BOUQUET To all the participants of the little library on Icarus Drive. Thank you for exchanging such wonderful books. I have enjoyed reading many of them, as I hope others have. BEEF To smokers who litter the streets with cigarette butts. Very toxic to the environment and to birds, animals and fish which ingest them. BOUQUET To the firemen, paramedics and people around who helped me after my motorcycle crash. They all went out of their way to help me and make sure I was OK. BEEF To the drivers with only one headlight. Is it a motorcycle? RCMP should enforce this safety issue. BOUQUET To the young man who asked if he could help, called road service on his cellphone and arranged everything when I locked my keys in my car near Wal-Mart. BEEF To myself for not thinking at the time to get the name of the kind, thoughtful young teen who asked me if I needed help at the Wal-Mart entrance.

BOUQUET To the ‘dine and dasher’ from July. You came back in September, apologized by saying you weren’t in your right mind, then produced the original receipt and made good on your bill.

BEEF To those people who use scented fabric softener sheets and perfume the air in the whole neighborhood. I go for a walk for the fresh air, not to breathe in perfume that many of us are sensitive to.

BEEF Shouldn’t the logs removed from the Colliery dam spillway be sold to help pay the $4.2-million bill? Don’t keep giving away what could be sold.

BOUQUET To the Altrusa Club, its families and friends who donated more than 100 dozen muffins to Georgia Avenue School. How thoughtful to organize, bake, and deliver all those wonderful muffins for the students.

BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Wine Shoppe for the great service and wonderfully made wines. Your pricing is also very reasonable and the staff is warm and welcoming. BEEF Nanaimo is getting an overgrown appearance. We need to top trees, trim shrubs; do it before the winter storms come and we are all out of power, and make houses safe from falling trees. BOUQUET To the mammogram clinic on Bowen Road. In and out in no time and makes an uncomfortable test a breeze. BEEF To the food bank for giving out expired food. Where is the food that people give in the grocery stores?

BEEF To the beefer regarding the consignment store. There are so many places to look for used goods – just go around the block. Googling ‘consignment’ might help.

BOUQUET To the chef at the casino. The food is fab. Keep up the good work. BEEF To the person who stole four dozen red roses from my family’s headstones in Cedar, just hours after my mother’s memorial service. BOUQUET To Elaine and staff of Island Overhead Door. Had a problem with our garage door system and they came and repaired it within the same day. We need more companies like this with such a great attitude. BEEF To the white truck with hockey decals that speeds constantly though Pleasant Valley and Metral school zone. You live in the area and should know better. BOUQUET To the people who return their unused and outdated medications to a pharmacy to be properly disposed. Many people are still not aware it goes back into our water systems. BEEF To the employee who lost his marbles because I was parked with my children in what was apparently his parking spot. He revved his truck engine and shouted at me, waving his hands and swearing because he had to park across the street. Thanks for teaching my four children how rude people can be.

BOUQUET To the woman at the aquatic centre gym who smiles all the time. It’s a nice change from all the scrunchy-faced grunting that goes on there.

BOUQUET To Dawn and the people at Nanaimo Home Group for once again organizing the Pumpkin Patch this year at Parkwood Park. Everyone enjoyed the treats and went home with pumpkins to carve, and money was raised for a bursary and for KidSport.

BEEF To the consignment store. If you’re really running things above board, why are you so hostile when questioned about prices paid out by you on my clothes?

BOUQUET To those who remove invasive plants from their properties. English ivy chokes and weakens trees and smothers low-growing native plants.

Submit your own Beef or Bouquet

BOUQUET To St. John’s Ambulance for helping my grandson with a bee sting at the VIEX.

Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Length is limited to 40 words and two submissions per person per week. A winner will be selected at random to receive a floral bouquet from Turley’s Florist and Potting Shed. Mail or deliver to the News Bulletin, 777B Poplar St., Nanaimo, V9S 2H7 or e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com. Fax to 250-753-0788.

BEEF To all those eligible voters in Nanaimo and Ladysmith who did not bother to vote. You get what you deserve.

________________________________________________________________________________

BOUQUET To the guy who weed-whacks along the logging roads for trimming so carefully around the memorial to Bonny. It can’t have been easy with that huge machine.

________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________

BEEF To the thoughtless, or just plain mean, powerboater who raced about Long Lake creating huge waves close to young members of Nanaimo Rowing Club, upsetting their canoes.

Name __________________________________________________________________________ Address ________________________________________________________________________ Phone No ______________________________________________________________________

This week’s winner:

BOUQUET To the owners and staff of Pier 97 restaurant, it was a great run. From the Sunday morning dads.

VIU Mariners tip off new season Men’s team re-loads with new additions

Women’s team adds local talent to roster

BY GREG SAKAKI

BY GREG SAKAKI

THE NEWS BULLETIN

THE NEWS BULLETIN

Maybe nationals aren’t that far away. It’s only the start of basketball season, but the Vancouver Island University Mariners do think about championships, and where they’ve been and where they want to be. The M’s were national finalists last year. So in one sense, they’re at that calibre, but in another sense, they’re starting over. “A bit of both, actually,” said Jerod Dorby, M’s centre. “Because it’s a new squad, new people, but I feel like the intensity and the teamwork is still there. We still have a lot to build, because any new team has that, but I feel like we’re going to hit our stride real soon.” VIU’s top scorer from last year, Justin King, turned pro, but the Mariners recruited two American players – forward Josh Ross and guard John Thompson – who coach Matt Kuzminski said “are contributing at a high level and who I think can be awesome players in this league.” Jason Fortin is back providing offence, defence and leadership at the forward position, and returning guard Chris Parker, as well as Dorby in the post, will also be impact players. It’s a group that’s capable of achieving its goals. “We really try to focus on the process of how we’re going to get there and that’s the stuff we do day in and day out,” Kuzminski said. GAME ON … The Mariners tip off the Pacific Western Athletic Association season against the Camosun Chargers on Friday (Oct. 30) at 8 p.m. at the VIU gym.

The VIU Mariners played as hard as anyone last spring at nationals, and it wasn’t quite enough. They recognized they needed more scoring, athleticism and size, said coach Bill McWhinnie, and they were able to address all of those needs. “We’ve improved in areas where we needed the improvement, and we’ve just gotten stronger in areas that we were already strong in,” said Ally Keir, M’s guard. Notably, guard Lanae Adams joins the Mariners from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, an NCAA Div. 1 program. Two other high-profile transfers are Nanaimo players Sara Simovic, a guard, and Victoria Brown, a forward. They complement a core led by guard Jamie MacFarlane and forward Sienna Pollard. Forward Emily Clarke is another starter. “We have a lot of strong individuals and it was a little worrisome coming in if we would click together, but we seem to read each other pretty well on the court,” Keir said. The program benefited from nationals last year. It provided experience and inspiration, and also perspective. “[We know] what to expect and where we need to be … As long as we’re playing our best basketball in February, early March, that’s all that matters,” McWhinnie said. “These games here, they’re all games we’d like to win, but we just want to keep getting better.” GAME ON … The Mariners tip off the Pacific Western Athletic Association season against the Camosun Chargers on Friday (Oct. 30) at 6 p.m. at the VIU gym.

Clippers will clash with ’Dogs The Nanaimo Clippers are getting a chance to build up some good, old-fashioned dislike with Island Division rivals. The city’s junior A hockey club continues a stretch of games against divisional opponents as it plays a home-andhome series this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 30-31) against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The matchups round out a span of three games in four nights for Nanaimo, after the team played just one game last weekend. “We needed that little bit of a light schedule,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “We’ve been banged up pretty good, especially on the back end, and having trouble finding enough bodies to get practice in.” GAME ON … The Clippers play the Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets at the door. For a recap of Wednesday’s matchup between the Clips and Victoria Grizzlies, please visit www.nanaimobulletin.com/sports.

WOMEN, MEN go into tournament as No. 2 seeds.

island Top Team’s Robert Biernacki brought his best to his goldmedal match. The black-belt athlete won his division at the international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s seattle international Open on saturday. he won with a kneebar from the 50-50 guard position, for his first gold medal as a black belt in iBJJF competition. island Top Team’s Cal McDonald and shane Malone earned bronze medals at the event.

BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

Vancouver Island University’s soccer teams showed they’re among the very best this season. But they don’t want to just be contenders, they want to be champions. The VIU Mariners play in the Pacific Western Athletic Association championships this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 30-31) in Burnaby. The women’s M’s are the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 3 Quest Kermodes in the semifinals. “If we come to play and

we play our game and we’re focused, I think we’ll be all right,” said Anup Kang, coach of the VIU women. “Quest is a very good team. We always have close games against them.” The key to the game, he said, will be pressuring the opponent to try to create turnovers. “We’re an experienced team and Quest has got some young players and that’s what we’re going to try and take advantage of,” Kang said. The Mariners are defending provincial champions, but the coach said his players aren’t looking ahead to a hypothetical gold-medal match yet. “They’re a veteran group,” Kang said. “We’re totally

focused on Quest, not beyond that, and if we do get there, we’ll cross that bridge at that time.” VIU’s attack is led by Jill Kelly, who finished fourth in the conference with five goals this season. As for the Mariners men, they also earned a No. 2 seed and will face the Capilano Blues in the semis. VIU’s offence is led by Andres Algarin, who was second in the PacWest with six goals this season. Goalkeeper Scott Brown led the loop with a goals-against average of 0.52. GAME ON … VIU’s women play Quest at 12:30 p.m. Friday and VIU’s men play Cap at 3 p.m. The matches are at Burnaby Lakes turf fields. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
