VICTORIA - The B.C. government is making licence plates mandatory for quads, dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles starting Nov. 1, requiring helmets and restricting use by children under 16. The B.C. legislation imposes a $230 fine for driving an unlicensed off-road vehicle, and a $368 fine for careless operation. For some offences under the OffRoad Vehicle Act related to reck-
less use or environmental damage, penalties can go as high as a $5,000 fine and six months in jail. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the $48 licence fee applies only once when a vehicle is purchased, and was set to recover the costs of the program administered by ICBC. Once startup costs are paid for, a portion of the licence revenue will go to off-road clubs to use for trail improvements, Thomson said. The province estimates there
are 200,000 off-road vehicles that require licensing, including snowmobiles that have been licensed since the 1970s. About 35,000 of those have registered voluntarily since the new licences were offered a year ago. Jeff Mohr, past president of the Quad Riders Association of B.C., said his members are most of the voluntary registrants so far, and they are pleased B.C. has a system to control the few users who ride recklessly or damage the environment. “We want to get more people
out on the trails, sharing and enjoying the outdoors,” Mohr said. The licence system also allows police to track stolen vehicles, even if they are taken out of the province. B.C. is the last Canadian province to implement a licensing system. The Quad Riders and B.C.’s 72 snowmobile clubs are prepared to publicize the new regulations to their members, and Thomson said they will act as “eyes and ears” for conservation and natural resource enforcement officers.

This is our smelter
Our people are the heart of our modernization A new era in aluminium production is beginning in Kitimat. Smelter modernization will reposition BC Operations as one of the most sustainable and competitive primary metal aluminium producers in the world. The technology will revolutionize the way we work, dramatically reducing total emissions by nearly 50 per cent. Good news for all of us - our employees, their families and our community. But it’s not just about technical edge - our employees are the real competitive advantage.
This is Karina’s story One employee contributing to the success of our operations here in British Columbia is Karina Dziuba. Like a number of our other employees here at BC Operations, Karina is a second generation employee. Her father Joe started with the company back in the late 50s and went on to become a supervisor in the Coke Calciner prior to his retirement. Karina started with BC Operations as a summer student, and after finishing a degree in Geology, decided more than anything else, she wanted to come back to her hometown of Kitimat. As an environmental specialist with BC Operations, Karina is passionate about the environmental improvements the new smelter will bring to the region. “With the old smelter we had to go up on the potroom roofs twice a month to retrieve the data cassettes,” she says. “All that has changed now because the new smelter comes with a fully automated system that will improve our ability to monitor emissions more efficiently and accurately which will help us to better protect the environment.” Although many innovations will debut with Kitimat’s smelter start-up, it’s employee know-how and how we work together through decades of aluminium production experience that have positioned BC Operations for success.

Hazelton break-ins increase
NEW HAZELTON – During the previous two weeks, the communities of New Hazelton, Two Mile, Gitanmaax and Hazelton have experienced a substantial increase in the number of vehicle and property break ins. In most cases, these crimes have been facilitated by doors left unlocked. Police are asking members of the community to keep valuables out of sight and to lock their doors. Report suspicious activity late at night. If you are the victim of a property crime, report it. Stolen property found on a person can lead to an arrest and charges. Anonymous tips can be sent to CrimeStoppers where information that leads to an arrest and a conviction may be eligible for a cash reward.
Be on the alert
TERRACE – ICBC is asking motorists to keep a special eye out on Hallowe’en. “They may be walking in unexpected places like driveways, alleys and parking lots. Others may try to cross in the middle of the street. Make sure there are no small children behind your vehicle by walking around it before getting in. Drive slowly and with extra caution, particularly in residential areas,” says ICBC.

Port Edward Credit union lays off 12 from head office backs pipeline By Shaun Thomas

PORT EDWARD - The District of Port Edward council has lent its support to TransCanada’s Prince Rupert Gas Transmission project (PRGT), becoming the second northwest municipal government in a month to do so. In a letter sent to project president Dean Patry, Mayor Dave MacDonald said the district is in favour of seeing the pipeline that would feed the Pacific Mayor Dave MacDonald NorthWest LNG terminal come to fruition. “The District of Port Edward council supports our business community together as we move forward as the host location for the Pacific NorthWest LNG liquefaction facility. TransCanada’s Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project plays an important role in the development of this project,” reads the letter. “We believe that PRGT has demonstrated commitment to meaningful engagement with the District of Port Edward and the surrounding area through project updates to council on a regular basis and invitations to community members to attend open houses to learn more about the project and its benefits and provide input to our project team.”
“Council supports our business community.”
PRINCE RUPERT - Northern Savings Credit Union has laid off 12 people at its head office in Prince Rupert, ranging from senior management to non-management personnel in every department, as part of a restructuring to ensure the institution is sustainable going forward. Northern Savings interim president and CEO Barry Delaney said the layoffs come following a review of business operations that included some downsizing in the company’s portfolio. “We owned a technology company whose employees were living on Vancouver Island and elsewhere and a technology company is not something the credit union has the skills or experience to run. It’s a very competitive industry, very challenging, and yet we had about 30 or more people in that business. It was a financial drag to the credit union and a distraction to the management team, so the decision was made to sell that ... We also made another decision in another area of our business to reduce our mortgage portfolio we own in Victoria,” explained Delaney. “As a result of reducing the size of our business, there is a commensurate need to reduce the staffing levels at the head office. From a business point of view, we couldn’t sustain that number of people without the corresponding revenue to support it ... It was really clear we had to do something for the long-term sustainability of the credit union.”

There are 12 fewer people working at Northern Savings Credit Union head office. Calling the layoffs “very significant”, Delaney noted the board and management struggled with the decision to layoff “good people who did nothing wrong”. However, he said management is working with the affected employees to minimize the financial hit. Delaney also said he doesn’t foresee other staffing reductions following this round of layoffs. “The staff have been asking if we are done and if there is more to come. I have been able to say that this is it. It’s a substan-

Groups receive grants By Alicia Bridges THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
SMITHERS - Smithers has received the biggest share of $10,000 in grants from Seabridge Gold, the company behind the proposed KSM Project north of Stewart. Non-profit organizations in communities across northwest B.C. received grants of between $500 and $1,000 from the company, which is trying to build a copper gold mine in northwest B.C. Among the recipients were the Smithers Ski and Snowboard Club, which was given $500 for course maintenance. The Bulkley Valley Research Centre received $500 for education and outreach and the Bulkley Valley Childcare Society was awarded $1,000 for children’s educational program funding. Smithers Public Library was given $1,500 to buy 3D printing technology and Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue received the same amount to purchase supplies. In Stewart the District of Stewart received $1,000 in support of public golf facilities.
And the Coast Mountain School District also received $1,000 for educational program technology. In the Nass Valley, the Gitxat’in Elders Society in Greenville received $1,000 for outreach. Two groups in Terrace and area received grants. The Terrace Hospice Society received $1,000 for outreach and education while the Terrace Peaks Gymnastics Club received $1,000 for upgrades. The recipients were chosen based on feedback from the public, who were invited to make suggestions through the company’s July newsletter. Seabridge invited the public to nominate groups that would benefit a broad range of people in education or
healthy living.
The KSM Project is a proposed copper and gold mine about 65 kilometres northwest of Stewart, B.C. Last year the company received federal and environmental approvals for the site. The company’s website says it
is working to secure permits for construction to begin. The project would be a combined open pit and underground operation.

property-rights violations. The Stellat’en news release states that “the case now confirms that, in British Columbia, First Nations may sue an industry or private company for damaging lands or interfering with their use and occupancy of lands and rivers.” Stellat’en Chief Archie Patrick is hailing the victory. “Rio Tinto Alcan had claimed immunity authorizing them to willful-
ly continue to damage our lands until we proved aboriginal title,” he said. “We’re pleased that the court recognized that such rights are under Canada’s constitution...and that we have rights to access the courts just as much as non-First Nation landowners.” Former Saik’uz Chief, and a named plaintiff in the case, Jackie Thomas, said the dam is one of the largest “environmentally damag-

3 Essential Tips For Winter Car Care (NC) Do you feel a little less confident working under the hood of a newer vehicle these days? With all of the technology involved, modern engine complexity may be the primary reason for a decline in do-ityourself automobile care. “It’s true that the big maintenance jobs might be best left to skilled mechanics, and yet, a few of the DIY basics, especially before winter, are still pretty easy to do,” says Colin Dilley at Prestone, a leading name in auto care and reported now to be North America’s top engine protection brand of antifreeze/coolant. “Just a few routine steps will ensure your own safety behind the wheel and will also help extend the life of such a major investment.” Here are three tasks to top your winterizing list: 1. Top up windshield fluids with a winter specific formula and replace wiper blades if brittle. 2. Check tire pressure regularly and add air to the recommended level if needed. Keep an eye on the treads of your tires

Check antifreeze/coolant level and concentration and top up as needed. The job of this fluid is to maintain the right temperature under the hood which is vital for your personal safety, to prevent vehicle breakdowns due to over-heating, and to ensure a longer engine life. Dilley adds: “Topping up the antifreeze/ coolant is a quick safety measure but always make sure that it contains a proven corrosion inhibitor. Corrosion is a primary cause of cooling system damage and is not always easy to detect during DIY maintenance. Our product labels are a helpful guide, including the guarantee of engine protection for all vehicles – domestic, Asian, and European. This all-vehicle feature ensures compatibility with fluids in all cars and light duty trucks.” www.newscanada.com

Car Care 2015
Conduct Quick Maintenance Checks For Safe Winter Driving (NC) An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and this is especially true when it comes to the major investment we make in our vehicles. “Winter is harsh on automobiles with deepfreeze temperatures, slippery conditions, plus stop-and-go gear changing,” says Colin Dilley at Prestone, a leading name in engine protection products. Here, Dilley gives us a few quick and easy winter maintenance tips: • Top up windshield fluids with a winter specific formula and replace blades if brittle. • Check tire pressure regularly and top up the air as recommended. • Check the treads on your tires and for
the best vehicle control, replace them no later than 5/32” of remaining tread depth. • Top up the antifreeze/coolant with a formula guaranteed to protect against corrosion. Corrosion can cause engines to quickly overheat, even in the winter. With the rigours of winter conditions, be sure to top up or do a complete flush and fill with an antifreeze/coolant that contains a proven corrosion inhibitor. • A key feature in Prestone antifreeze/ coolant is the corrosion inhibitor package that’s guaranteed to work in all domestic, Asian, and European autos. It ensures compatibility with the antifreeze/coolant requirements in any car. www.newscanada.com

Car Care 2015 What To Do If You Fill Up Your Car With The Wrong Fuel (NC) Gasoline in a diesel tank or diesel in a gasoline tank; either way it’s not great news. The wrong kind of fuel can cause serious damage to your engine. But don’t panic; just follow these four simple steps fromDocument9 ingenie Canada, a telematics based auto insurance provider for Ontario drivers aged 16 to 24. If you haven’t started the engine:1. Don’t start the engine. 2. Tell a gas station attendant what’s happened. 3. Ask someone to help you push your car out of the way. 4. Call a towing company so they can tow your car to a mechanic who will drain the fuel. If the fuel hasn’t been drawn into the engine, you may get away with no damage at all. If you have started the engine:Don’t start it again unless you have to, such as you are in an unsafe position and have no one to help you push your car. Things may
be more difficult if you’ve driven the car, as the wrong fuel can damage your engine if it’s drawn through the system. 1. Make sure you’re parked in a safe place. 2. Make sure your ignition is off. 3. Call your mechanic and the towing company. 4. Call your insurer. A mechanic will need to drain your tank of fuel and you’ll probably need the filter replaced to protect your engine. How it will affect your insurance: Filling up with the wrong fuel is classed as accidental damage with a comprehensive insurance policy. However, you need to check with your insurer whether they’ll cover roadside assistance and fuel removal. Additional information and tips on running a car can be found at www.ingenie.ca. www.newscanada.com

Car Car Care Care 2015 2015
Three Tips To Prevent Accidents On The Road (NC) Driving has become second nature to many of us and many times we don’t think twice about potential distractions. Cell phones are a major distraction and the fines are getting steeper to deter people from texting or making phone calls while driving. There are other distractions that you might not think of when in your car for long or even short distances. The fines for distracted driving are now more than $500, but that’s not the only cost. According to Transport Canada, Alberta has the highest percentage of drivers using cell phones compared to other provinces.
And the RCMP tells us that in 80 per cent of collisions, the driver took their eyes off the road for at least three seconds. Blake Reichert, vice-president of the Prairie Region for Western Financial Group wants people to remember that distracted driving increases the risk of accidents, ranging from fender benders to more serious crashes. “When people drive distracted, they are increasing their risk,” says Reichert. “Simple decisions like putting your phone away when you are driving or pulling over to get some sleep can greatly reduce your risk of accidents and therefore reduce the need for claims.”

Here are some tips to ensure that you get to your destination safely: Put your cell phone away: Using a phone takes the driver’s eyes off the road. It can be tempting to check that text or email or answer the phone while you are driving so keep the phone out of sight and on silent. Pull over: To avoid driving while distracted, you can simply pull over if it is safe to do so. If you are in the city, pulling into a parking lot to make a phone call, adjust your GPS, or use any other electronic device is a good practice. Get some rest: If you have to head out for
a long drive, make sure you get a good night’s sleep beforehand. If you start to feel drowsy, pull over in a rest area and close your eyes until you feel more alert. With all of the distractions in today’s world and the multitude of devices available in cars, it can be hard to focus on just driving. But not doing so can cost you in fines, accident claims and other more serious outcomes. Take precautions to ensure that you are alert behind the wheel at all times. Winter Drivers Should Always Check Vehicle Tire Inflation (NC) When the snow flies, Canadian drivers have to be prepared. Temperature swings, which are common across Canada during the fall and winter months, can result in significant changes in tire pressure. For example, did you know that for every 5oC drop in temperature, tire pressure drops by one pound per square inch (psi)? So if the temperature were to drop to -15oC, tires could lose three psi of tire pressure. For some tires that means a 10 per cent loss in inflation. By maintaining proper tire inflation, consumers can save money at the pumps and reduce harmful emissions. Most importantly, they can increase the safety and performance of their vehicles by ensuring that their tires are being used within the correct operating specifications and conditions for the vehicle. As well, because prop-
erly inflated tires will last longer, you could save the cost of one or two sets of tires over the life of your vehicle. According to the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, even though many drivers use all-season tires because they do provide safe all-weather performance, winter tires are actually more efficient once the mercury starts to dip. The association says modern winter tires offer up to 50 per cent or more traction than all-season tires. If fuel efficiency and safe winter driving are important to you, there are some very helpful tips and tools on the Natural Resources Canada website at vehicles.gc.ca such as the EnerGuide Label for Vehicles and the annual Fuel Consumption Guide. You can also call 1-800- 387-2000 to receive more information about fuel efficiency. www.newscanada.com

PET OF THE WEEK
The Northern Connector Friday, October 30, 2015
Hi I’m Mr. Cottontail
NADIA MOVOLD
to our RE/MAX Coast Mountains family.
SHAUN THOMAS / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
Olga Newton prepares to sample the cake at her 100th birthday.
Celebrating 100 years By Shaun Thomas
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Forget iPads, WiFi and cell phones, when Olga Solberg was born there was no such thing as zippers, stainless steel, Band-Aids or RCMP. None of those items had been invented on Oct. 21, 1915 and the national police force was still five years away. Obviously much has changed since then — the population has skyrocketed from 1.8 billion to more than 7 billion and not one but two World Wars have come an end — and Olga has lived through it all. On Oct. 20, one day ahead of her centennial birthday, Olga Newton was joined by dozens upon dozens of family members at the Crest Hotel to celebrate this amazing milestone. With five generations in the room and following a limousine ride from Terrace
to Prince Rupert earlier in the morning, the great, great grandmother was all smiles as she cut into her birthday cake. “It just feels wonderful, amazing. I can’t imagine that they all would have come,” said Olga, who moved to the North Coast back in 1941. Asked about what she attributes to reaching her 100th birthday, Olga lets out a little laugh before sharing her secret. “It’s got to come down to good genes,” she said. “It feels both amazing and surprising. I didn’t think I was going to reach it, but it came one day at a time.” With 100 years behind her and several loved ones surrounding her, Olga said she doesn’t necessarily have any big plans leading into her 101st birthday. “I’m just going to take it a day at a time and keep happy and healthy,” she said.

Margot Hildegard Will July 12, 1927 – October 17, 2015
We grieve the passing of our dear Mother and Oma. She is predeceased by her husband, parents, sisters and their spouses. Born and raised in Germany, Margot was the youngest of three girls. After the devastation of World War II, Margot was privileged to alone, immigrate into Canada, as a young woman, eventually making her home in Prince Rupert, B.C. She worked as a nurses aid at the Miller Bay TB Hospital and also trained with Pitman College in Vancouver to become a bookkeeper. She became a teller supervisor at the Bank of Montreal and eventually met and married her life partner in Prince Rupert, also from Germany, Hans Will, in 1960. Her treasured family began to grow with the births of: Alexander (Donna Reece), Anita (David Materi) then Mark (Janet). Margot became a fulltime homemaker and when Mark started school, she was employed by Lindsay’s Cartage as a part-time bookkeeper, years later, a tour guide for the Rupert Museum. She also operated the Mt. Hays canteen for a summer, shortly before the closure of the Gondola Ski Hill. Mom was hardworking, frugal, resourceful and enjoyed life in Canada to its fullest. She particularly enjoyed travelling, baking, crafts, and festive celebrations with family and friends and in later years, competitive Bridge with dad. After she was widowed in 2004, Mom moved to her favourite B.C. vacation spot, Kelowna. She enjoyed many more years there until her health took a turn about 4 years ago. She lived her last 1½ years at Terraceview Lodge in Terrace, B.C. where she could be closer to her children, Anita and Alex and families. She will be deeply missed by her children and her very treasured grandchildren Justine, Garrett, Jeffrey, Krista, Wilhelmina, Meghan, Jordan and more recently, several great grandchildren. Many thanks to the staff at Terraceview Lodge for your kindness and care, and also to those dear friends that offered their time and support to Margot and the family.
An intimate celebration of life will be planned for a later date in Prince Rupert, B.C..

Penalties blunt Rampage effort against Kings By William Gye
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Rampage were at home this past weekend, hosting the Terrace River Kings, and after a big home win last weekend, the team hoped to notch another one. After a good start to the first period, the Rampage got into early penalty trouble. This would prove to be the trend for the night. Although they killed off the early penalties, the River Kings got on the board early thanks to Ken Norostrom. It was a quick shot off the half boards closest to the stands that squeaked through Jarrod Hildebrandt. After exchanging penalties, Prince Rupert got some life after a great shift by Brayden Horcoff taking the puck strong to the net, and an individual effort by Devin Palmer that saw him go through two defenders only to be stopped by River Kings’ goaltender Patrick Leal. Again, off-setting penalties, then another penalty to the Rampage, would see the River Kings go on the power-play. They were finally able to convert with the man advantage through a nifty shot, short side, by Danson LeBlond to make it 2-0. Penalties hurt Prince Rupert as they started the second period short-handed. Able to kill the penalty, the Rampage found their legs again until a turn-over in the neutral zone saw Terrace go the other way, and Reid Turner redirected the puck past Hildebrandt. Although it was
a good finish, Terrace was lucky to have the puck go to Turner, as the pass looked more like a shot to make it 3-0. The Rampage pushed back, with Tyler Halliday throwing his weight around, creating space for himself and he was able to get in all alone, but was stopped. Horcoff took another trip to the box, but thanks to the hard-nosed play and some big hits by Jean Luc Fournier, the Rampage stayed very much in the game. Late in the second there was a bit of controversy as a quick whistle from the referee denied Rupert their first goal of the game, which could have turned the tide. Guilty of undisciplined play, Rupert took a bench minor after the play for arguing the call. “We can’t stress over the refs and make up excuses, when stuff like that happens, you just got to fight through the game and put the puck in the net,” said forward Jordan Aubee. The third period started on the penalty kill for the Rampage, but after a gutsy blocked shot, Tyler Munro and Patrick Robert found themselves in a two on one, but Munro rung it off the crossbar. Unlucky bounces and not enough puck movement through the neutral zone contributed to the lack of goals. Again unable to convert on a 5-on3 in the third, Terrace iced the game with a rebound goal from Colton Braid. Patrick Robert had a couple chances late, but was unable to find the back of the net. The final tally

Terrace played a pretty good game, they forechecked hard. We know that we have to show up to these kind of games, we can’t

just take it for granted that we’re just going to show up and win,” said Jared Andreesen, who was behind the bench for the Rampage. Aubee, however, definitely added some intensity to the game, with a fight in the second period. “Anything we can do to get a
little momentum when things aren’t going our way. I liked the intensity, and I didn’t think we had a terrible game, we were battling, and sometimes we didn’t get puck luck,” he said. The Rampage face the River Kings again on Saturday in Terrace.

TERRACE - All ten of the Terrace cross country athletes who raced in the Oct. 24 zone championships in Smithers qualified for provincials next weekend. Placing in the top 15 of the zone, Terrace runners competed against teams from Smithers, Hazleton, Prince Rupert and Laxwalams. Terrace coach Megan Reid said it was sunny but very cold, and the 4.5-kilometre course was a little treacherous, muddy with a very large hill and fallen leaves covering hazards. Two moose on the course delayed the race start time. “This is the largest cross country team from Terrace in three years,” Reid said, adding that Terrace had three athletes for the last two years.

Third Avenue sidewalks being replaced By Kevin Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The third major project has been revealed and already started under Prince Rupert mayor and council’s ‘Re:Build Rupert’ initiative, targeting the city’s $259 million infrastructure deficit. This time, it’s the Third Avenue sidewalks in the downtown core that will be receiving a facelift over the next five years, following the Fraser Street revitalization plan from earlier this summer and the water lines and dam upgrades. As outlined in a release sent by the city last week, the engineering department has awarded the contract for the project to Rupert Wood’n Steel and it will see the sidewalks from McBride Street to Eighth Avenue rehabilitated. Mayor Lee Brain said that not only are the upgrades aesthetic in nature and will beautify the downtown dis-
trict, but they will lead to greater, more functional repairs made on Third Avenue roads. “We’re just trying to figure out the timing of when the road of Third Avenue will get taken care of, but we’re also planning on doing the road as well,” he said. “[That area has the] most traffic, but also the strata underneath the road needs to be replaced right now. You see the manholes sinking and all these types of things – you can’t just [quickly] fix that. You’d need to actually dig up the whole road. Plus, we have pipes and electrical lines that need to be replaced. We’re also trying to revitalize the downtown core so that we can get businesses more viable on Third [Ave.], get shops reopening and that type of thing.” A public engagement process will be initiated in the near future, consulting residents and businesses on how they would

The sidewalk renewal is jointly funded out of the city’s operating budget and the Prince Rupert Legacy Fund. The red brick-layered crosswalks on Third Avenue are also on the chopping block, as some of the derelict and decrepit road-walks that have missing bricks or bumpy surfaces are scheduled to be overhauled into

If you have strollers, it’s bumpy, people are tripping and we’ve had seniors say they’ve had issues with accessibility and wheelchair accessibility, so we’re going to smooth out those crosswalks much more nicely [in the five-year sidewalk rehabilitation plan],” Mayor Brain added.

Prince Rupert business leaders welcome Trans-Pacific deal By Kevin Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT Many political pundits have already weighed in on how the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) signed by the Canadian federal government earlier this fall will affect different sectors of the Canadian economy. The Pacific Rim trade deal between Canada and 11 other countries has different ramifications for farmers, who are being compensated $4.3 billion over 15 years for any lost income, than it does for the raw minerals industry than it does for the auto sector or the lumber industry. Here in Prince Rupert, the TPP brings exciting prospects to many businesses and residents who call the North Coast home. With tariffs on Canadian exports to Japan, the world’s thirdlargest economy, coming down in the coming years, as well as decreased tariffs in countries ranging from Chile to Malaysia to Vietnam to Singapore, the Port of Prince Rupert, which already ships and receives millions of tonnes of cargo per year, consisting of agri-food, biofuel, metallurgical coal, wheat, canola, logs, containers and more, may potentially see a drastic rise in traffic volumes as Canadian exporters take advantage of the trade deal. “The Trans-Pacific Partnership enables improved market access for trading between countries. The Port of Prince Rupert is supportive of all efforts that grow Canada’s participation in two-way trade. 3,000 jobs in northern B.C. depend on trade through our gateway - a number that’s doubled in just five years,” said Prince Rupert Port Authority manager of corporate communications Michael Gurney. “Importantly, the TPP participants are countries within the Asia-Pacific region which are key origins and destinations of
Prince Rupert cargo traffic. Growth in the Port of Prince Rupert’s trade volumes — positively affected by the TPP’s effects on market reach and streamlined customs clearance procedures — will increase jobs, business opportunities in northern B.C.’s supply chains, and the tax base for all levels of government.” The Prince Rupert and District Chamber of
Commerce and the B.C. Chamber of Commerce also support the deal. “[The two Chambers] applaud the Oct. 5 announcement that Canada has successfully concluded negotiations to the Trans-Pacific Partnership,” said chamber president Rosa Miller. “The TPP agreement is good for B.C. and, in turn, good for our community as we continue
to move towards becoming a brighter star and a key piece in the provincial and Canadian economy. We agree with [B.C. Chamber president and CEO] Jon Garson, when he says that negotiations are a give-and-take. While Canada had to move on key interests such as managed dairy and poultry products, the net benefit from gaining market access for goods while removing
restrictions on services, investments, financial services, etc... is too good to pass up,” Miller continued. The Government of Canada’s Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada website cites the TPP deal as the “most comprehensive trade agreement in the world” that “will help deepen Canada’s trade ties in the dynamic and fast-growing Asia-Pacif-
ic region while strengthening our existing economic partnerships with our partners in the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and across the Americas”. The deal has yet to be ratified by the new Liberal Government of Canada, but the party said before the Oct. 19 federal election that it would “hold a full and open public debate” in

Parliament about the agreement. “The Trans-Pacific Partnership stands to remove trade barriers, widely expand free trade for Canada, and increase opportunities for our middle class and those working hard to join it. Liberals will take a responsible approach to thoroughly examining the Trans-Pacific Partnership,” read a statement.
