A network of women in business Kamloops Women in Business aims to offer a uniquely female opportunity.
L
inda Reddin and Karen Shaben founded the Kamloops Women in Business group in 2010, right around the time both had taken new steps in their career. Linda, a business coach and certified executive coach, had just started her own business when Shaben approached her about the idea. The two met through their work with Rotary. “It was perfect timing when she approached me because I was also thinking of doing something like that,” Reddin said. “We decided to go with a strictly women in business group and the reason being we felt their wasn’t anything like that in Kamloops and we wanted to have something that would honour the busy lives of women in business.” Reddin said they felt women often have so much more going on in their lives besides their careers, and other formal networking groups put a lot of
pressure on its members in terms of fees and time commitment. Instead, they wanted to organize a networking group that was run voluntarily and in a non-competing environment, where women could support each other in their career endeavours. It aims to offer a place where women can learn about each other’s businesses, exchange business leads and referrals and build lasting relationships. When the group launched, there were no competing business, but as it grew, they opened it up to everyone. Now they have 60 members. “We started with the network we had,” Reddin said. “We invited women from our Rotary group and as well as people we knew otherwise in the community who we thought might benefit and be interested in such a group. “As the group grew, we eventually opened it up and invited people from the same industry.”
They meet once a month over dinner with networking being the No. 1 priority. Each month one member is invited to do a 20-minute presentation about her work, but it isn’t meant to be a sales pitch. They aim to give women in the group something to take away, information she can benefit from and apply in her day-to-day business. Reddin has done live business coaching sessions, for example. “It’s the knowledge,” she said. “They are learning quite a bit. It just helps them to better support them in their roles and help them get ideas on more business opportunities and more business development and exposure.” There are no fees to join the group and the only cost is your dinner bill. Women who are interested in joining can go online to the Kamloops Women in Business group on LinkedIn or contact them through their Facebook page. Prospective members must be working full time. Those interested in joining can attend two consecutive meetings as a guest and then apply for membership, at which point they are eligible to do a presentation on their business. The group meets the third Thursday of every month.

By girls, for girls The Y Power of Being a Girl Conference is celebrating 10 years of empowering young women.
S
ince 2006 more than 1,000 girls throughout the Thompson Valley have participated in the one-day event that draws a waitlist every year. The conference was developed as a result of the national YWCA’s commitment to violence prevention initiatives. The local branch was given free reign to create a specialized event for young girls, keeping in mind themes of self esteem, healthy relationships, discrimination and body image. “We know that it has a huge impact on the girls,” said Jacquie Brand, director of programs with the YWCA’s violence against women intervention and support services. “I think the workshops we have really reflect what is going on with the girls at
that time and I think it just gives them an opportunity to talk about it, a safe place to share what is going on with them and if it’s not sharing with words it’s sharing with art.” The program is developed by girls for girls. Every spring the Y holds a planning committee, a six-week workshop where girls aged 12, 13 and 14, and some older teenage girls, known as mentor girls, give input on what is important to them and what is happening in their lives. A community voices committee, comprised of Y staff, volunteers and community members — all women — plan the conference based on that information. “This year there was a lot about body image and dieting and eating disorders and the last couple years that actually didn’t come up, but we try to listen to the girls and what is coming up for them right now because what us as adults think is going on for them never is the case,” Brand said. “So, this way, we get to figure out what they really want to address and we create the workshops around that.” The conference is held in the fall, with
a capacity of 135 girls aged 12, 13 and 14. This year the five workshops included Conscious Girl, a media-busing session exploring how media influences how you see yourself; Unmasked Girl, where the girls used mask making to explore identity and self awareness; Empowered Girl, a dream catcher workshop where they identified and challenged negative themes in their lives and set the stage for positive themes; Balanced Girl, a wellness workshop where they committed to simple, fun and healthy wellness strategies; and Dynamic Girl, a movement workshop with yoga and POUND. The conference is free for every participant and made possible by funds raised through the YMCA-YWCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign and community support. “As long as people keep supporting the strong kids challenge and as long as we still have a community that sees the value in it, we’ll do it for another ten years,” Brand said. “It’s a really amazing day. I wish when I was that age that I had a place to go and just have a place to be that I could share what was going on for me at the time.”

On September 12, 2015 Lorianna and her dance partner, Dave Chyzowski, won the 2015 Dancing Like the Stars event presented by the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. This notable event raised in excess of $110,000 in support of Women’s Breast Health Initiatives at Royal Inland Hospital. Lorianna has spent several years chairing health related appeals for provincial health authorities and health related colleges through her involvement with the BC Health Professions Review Board. She has a passion for academic instruction as well, a niche which she fills through her role as a sessional law instructor at TRU. Lorianna understands the importance of work/life balance. She is an active mother of three children. When not working, she is with her family who are her first priority. In her free time, she is a school volunteer, and can be found at hockey arenas or soccer fields admirably cheering on her boys with her young daughter in tow. Lorianna also runs a cattle ranch with her husband, and especially cherishes those days that she can spend on horseback with her family.

Women Shining by Barbara Maher
T
his is an exciting time in evolution for women: wonderful and important changes. I have had the opportunity to work at different careers, travel and volunteer in my search for something that would hold my interest and passion, to contribute to each day rather than have my work be an obligation. I find it very sad to see Facebook posts saying “TGIF” — thank Goodness it’s Friday — basically wishing life away. My version of TGIF is “this girl is fabulous!” I live this passion in working with women who are struggling, feeling overwhelmed and often feel as if life has passed them by. It was a result of talking with these women that lead me to my career as a life coach. I help women become clear on what they really want and support them as they create their blueprint to get there, at any age — it is never too late! In September 2012 I was diagnosed
with cancer. After a major surgery and monitoring for the last couple years, I am grateful to say that I am in good health. Receiving the news that most of us dread lead me to reflect on the meaning of my life and possible legacy I was leaving. I felt that I needed to reach more women and share my message — helping women find the power we all have within us and living a life with spirit. The challenge I faced was “how could I help more women reach their goal?” I want to help the women who were falling through the cracks in society — women who had a dream but not the means to reach their dream. It was at this time I created the Women Helping Women Fund under the BC Interior Community Foundation. The Women Helping Women Fund is able to provide two bursaries a year, one for a young woman graduating high school, the other for a woman, 30 and older, who would like to resume her education. The main criteria for eligibility is having volunteered in the community. In an effort to find ongoing support
for the fund I co-ordinated the International Women’s Day Conference with proceeds going towards building the fund. I have recently launched a new free online women’s magazine, Women Shining, to continue growing the fund. I hope you will support this fund and mission to help women succeed. To donate to the fund and download the magazine, please go online to womenshining.com It is my dream to reach and help women who are giving back to their community. It is my dream that this fund continues to grow and that similar funds are started in other areas so all women may shine! Barbara Maher is a certified life coach based in Chase.

SHIRLEY PALMER-HUNT M ARGARET J ORDENS
I started in the meat industry in 1984 with my husband Michael, when we opened Seafair Gourmet Meats in Richmond. While most butcher shops brought in boxed beef, we specialized in “swinging” beef, a method that was almost exclusive to Seafair because of the cost, both in product and labour. We felt that this method gave the consumer the best quality product because of the dry ageing of the meat for a period of 21 to 28 days. During this time, the eat becomes more tender, even the connective tissues of the meat are broken down and the meat less expensive cuts. In 2001, my husband Michael passedd away, and I continued operating the meat shop but moved to Kamloops in 2003. proached When the Summit Shopping Centre was being built, I was approached by the management property to lease a space in the mall andd offer the residents of Kamloops the same type of meat shop that et Richmondites enjoyed. In August of 2006, Summit Gourmet Meats was officially opened. I continued with our tradition of bringing in carcass beef, making our own sausages, cutlets, cordon bleu, chicken kiev, as well as all our own ground meats. My son Michael, who learnt meat cutting from his dad and my daughter Chrissy are both involved and working in the shop along with 8 other staff members. It has been an honour and joy to be so well received and supported by the people of Kamloops! It was the best move I ever made!

Morgan Higgins
Morgan received her diploma in clinical esthetics in 2006 and immediately found work as a laser technician. Working alongside a dermatologist, she gained invaluable knowledge and expertise within the laser and skincare industry. As a single mother of two young children she was finding it increasingly difficult to balance her career and motherhood. She wanted to find an opportunity that would provide her with a modest income and more flexible lifestyle. At that time, the popularity of laser hair removal was on the rise but was seen as too expensive by most people. Morgan saw the opportunity to provide state-of-theart laser hair removal at affordable prices and opened her first Smooth Effects clinic in Vernon, B.C. April of 2008. The Vernon clinic was an immediate success with clients travelling from Kelowna, Penticton, and Kamloops for professional laser hair removal services at reasonable prices. In fact, demand for her services were so great that 14 months later she opened her second clinic, in Kelowna, in June 2009. The strength of the Smooth Effects brand and her effective business plan allowed her to open a third clinic in April of 2011, this time in Kamloops, B.C. Since then, she has devoted most of her time to developing a franchising package, with the goal of helping other women to own and operate their own successful business while maintaining a flexible lifestyle.

Time to put women in charge by Janice Otremba
I
t’s time for a revolution. One with women in charge. One with a new definition of confidence. One where our emotional intelligence is valued and leadership skills are perceived in a different way. We can read a lot about women in leadership roles today. Magazines and websites are filled with stories about why women make good leaders but we aren’t populating the C-suite with the frequency we should. We lack confidence, we’re told. The confidence to demand the roles of director or CEO. The confidence to command the salary. The confidence to speak up at all.
Or maybe we aren’t looking in the right place. Around the globe, women are presidents and prime ministers in 19 countries, yet they’re CEOs of only 4.6 per cent of Fortune 500 countries. And maybe we aren’t asking the right questions about confidence. Women typically don’t self-identify as “confident” like men do.
IT’S A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONFIDENCE In fact, we possess natural leadership skills, a trait we’ve seen throughout the centuries in the family dynamic. We run the family household and often we support family businesses (hey, you have an Etsy shop? Yes, I’m looking at you, Ms. Leader.) WOMEN ARE: 1. MORE NURTURING We are more interested in seeing everyone succeed. A 2014 Zenger Folkman survey showed most employees perceive female leaders as excelling at nurturing competencies
such as developing others, inspiring and motivating others, relationship building, collaboration and teamwork. 2. GOOD LISTENERS It plays into the nurturing skill, but an ability to listen allows us to pay more attention to detail. We’re especially in tune to discord among our teams, which makes us more willing to engage and assist instead of telling everyone to “get over it” and “figure your stuff out.” 3. BETTER TEAM BUILDERS We like to surround ourselves by people who complement our skills. You can look at the bridge of a ship and determine who the captain is, but that’s just a small part of the trip. Women are more successful at identifying the people who will help achieve the business goals and empowering their skills. 4. INQUISITIVE We don’t have to be right all the time. We like to learn from others and ensure
we improve upon the mistakes we’ve made in the past. Because women are usually less competitive in the workplace, we aren’t hesitant to ask questions, an action that can be perceived as a weakness among men.
BUILD YOURSELF UP The culture of how we measure success is changing. Leaders are no longer being judged on the bottom line. Talented employees want a nurturing workspace, one that allows for flexible work schedules, corporate wellness and balance. We aren’t working in factories, punching a time card. We’re looking for inclusivity and cultures that support us in our lifestyle as well as work. Who better to understand that than women? Cut the B.S. Janice kicks your butt into gear with simple, sound advice for beating burnout. Learn how to satisfy your core values, beat burnout and lead change. www.janiceotremba.com

DURVENE GAL
Durvene Gal has been filling a niche in the Kamloops marketplace since 2004, continually adapting the product lines at Appliance Gallery to cater to the opportunity. As gourmet cooking, home decorating and kitchen renovations became the trend, she noticed builders and homeowners were unable to find a specialized selection of quality appliances to fit their budgets, locally. Clients expressed a need for their appliances to be more reliable, last longer and provide better results. They asked for personal, friendly service and a place to shop locally to protect their investment. With first-hand knowledge of the business, experience in the kitchen as a cook, designer and renovator, as well as a close connection with Kamloops home builders and real estate, Durvene decided to specialize in Professional, Designer & European appliances. It was an excellent move and Appliance Gallery has now thrived for 11 years. Durvene’s customers know what to expect in a high-end appliance. They’re stylish and built to last, designed for energy efficiency and are environmentally friendly. She can help match any budget to a quality appliance that meets the expectations of homeowners. Visit Appliance Gallery and plan out the chef’s kitchen of your dreams today. You’ll be glad you made the drive out to Valleyiew to meet Durvene and her salesperson Doug.

She returned to Kamloops after working abroad in Switzerland so that she could be closer to her family. She received a BSc Mathematics from University College of the Cariboo in 1999 and became a certified pet groomer in 2011. She mentored under a skilled groomer with over 40 years of experience prior to starting a professional pet salon in her home on the North Shore of Kamloops. Tanja’s Pet Grooming has grown steadily over that last three years, receiving positive feedback on her pet styling and grooming techniques. Last spring, she attended the Northwest Grooming Show in Tacoma, WA and will be returning again next year to learn further techniques and styles. She operates with the belief that styling and grooming should go to enhance the overall well-being of the animal. All dogs, large & small, benefit from grooming as it aids in the breathability of their skin, comfort of the dog, body temperature control and many other aspects of the dogs health. All of Tanja’s furry clients undergo a routine inspection of their skin, nails, ears and teeth with preventative health care recommendations made to the owners. My name is Della Summers and I’m happy to have been a resident of Kamloops for the past seven years. I originally moved out here for the improvement in weather — as I’m originally from Saskatoon — but I’ve stayed because I love the people of this fine city! As a dentist, I’ve seen many changes through my career. I never imagined when I first started dentistry that at this stage I would be placing implants, doing bone and soft tissue grafts, and doing cosmetic dentistry that improves people’s smiles, and their self confidence, therefore their quality of life. Using a CT scanner seemed like something out of science fiction, but it is now reality and aids us in our day to day diagnosis and treatment planning. The best part of what I do is dentistry that is painless. Whether it is because of the topical anesthetics we use before the actual injection, or the gentle approach I prefer, it’s safe to say we aren’t recreating any bad experiences for people that occurred in the past. My favourite thing is when patients say to me: “You know, I feel more like I was visiting a friend than seeing a dentist,” or “That’s it? We’re done??” That, to me, is success. I’m very excited to be opening my new office on St Paul Street in early November. We’ve got a great team, all with the same vision to help people keep their teeth for their lifetime, to replace them with solid implants, or implant supported dentures. THIS is fun, and very rewarding for the patients and us as a team!
