Joint meeting works out common ground Cranbrook and Kimberley councils meet for first time since municipal election
A R N E PE TRYSHEN
Cranbrook and Kimberley city councils met on Tuesday night to discuss joint initiatives between the two communities. The meeting was the first joint council meeting that the two cities have had since the new councils came onboard last election. Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt said it has been in the works for a while and he has had meetings with Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick over the past year. “Going back to square one, during the election Mayor McComick and myself introduced ourselves to each other and had a couple meetings,” Pratt said. “We decided then
and there that what’s good for Cranbrook is good for Kimberley, and what’s good for Kimberley is good for Cranbrook. We decided that if we were elected we would lean towards working together in getting some activity going for the region that would be positive for both communities.” Pratt said they decided it was time to introduce the councils to each other. He noted that with Cranbrook being a new council and some new additions to Kimberley, the two councils didn’t really know each other. Mayor McCormick said that there are a lot of common initiatives that the two communities share and are work-
ing towards. “So staying on top of that and making sure we’re supporting it in the best possible way is really important,” McCormick said. “The meeting (Tuesday) night was the first one to
kick that off.” McCormick said the co-council meetings went back as far as the days Ross Priest was the mayor of Cranbrook and Jim Ogilvie was the mayor of Kimberley. “They saw that given
the communities were close together, we should be trying to work a little closer together. Unfortunately those meetings happened once a year and there wasn’t a lot of follow up and there wasn’t an
awful lot of things on the agenda that warranted work moving forward.” McCormick said he and Mayor Pratt have been working since the last election to figure out how the two communi-
ties can work much closer together for mutual benefit. He said in the past the joint initiatives have had a tough time getting traction.

Red’s rock and roll radio revolution Legendary disc jockey recalls the beginning of an era

t the moment John Lennon swore at Red Robinson on a stage in Vancouver, the Beatles and all involved with their first ever Canadian show in 1964 were facing chaos, riot and tumult the like of which had never seen before. But by that time, Red was used to that kind of situation. Red Robinson, the legendary Vancouver DJ, spoke to the Cranbrook Daily Townsman in advance the Arts Club production of Red Rock Diner, the musical revue based on his groundbreaking 1950s radio show, playing at
the Key City Theatre Nov. 14. Robinson is credited with being the first disc jockey to play the new music of Rock ‘n Roll in Canada. Along the way, he became associated with some of the giants of that era. Radio was a whole different animal from today when Red broke into the business as a teenager, and started bringing R&B sounds to the Vancouver airwaves. “There was a station in Seattle, called KJR, and they played a lot what we called R&B before it morphed into Rock n’ Roll — artists like Ruth Brown, Clyde McPhatter — and I started playing it.”

Legion kicks off contest T R E VO R C R AW LE Y
It’s never too early to honour Canada’s veterans, but with Remembrance Day fast approaching, the Cranbrook Legion is kicking off it’s annual poster and literacy campaign. The initiative encourages students from elementary,
middle and high school to submit art posters or literary poems and essays with a theme of remembering and honouring Canadian veterans who have served at home and abroad throughout the nation’s history. The contest will be broken down by age group and a local
panel of volunteers with the Cranbrook Legion Branch No. 24 will adjudicate the entries, which have ranged anywhere from 300-500 in the past. The contest is open to schools in Cranbrook, Kimberley and Jaffray, as local winning entries can advance to zone finals, provincial finals
and even national finals in Ottawa. Clive Brown, president of the Cranbrook Legion Branch 24, says the contest is a good way to get kids and youth engaged in the spirit of remembrance.

Red’s rock and roll radio revolution Continued from page 1
“I was going to high school. I never really worked anywhere but Vancouver from the time I was 16, 17. “I was appearing on a show (on CKWX) because I did voice impersonations — Jimmy Stewart and everybody. But they gave me my own show in 1954, and all I did was say, “okay, what are they listening to up at the Oakway, which was a little diner at Oak and Broadway. “The guy had stuff on the juke box by (R&B singers) Wynonie Harris and Lloyd Price, and I said when you’re finished with those (45s) can I have ‘em? I want to play them on the air. He said sure, take ‘em, I don’t want ‘em.” Along the way, Red became a concert emcee, introducing artists at their Vancouver concerts. Then 1957 came along, and with it a revolution. Elvis Presley
arrived, to play the third — and last — concert he would ever play outside the U.S. (the other two, that same year, were in Ottawa and Toronto). “Then in August he came here. The circuit for his tour was running up the northwest, so it made sense.” Vancouver’s first rock and roll show had taken place a year before, when 6,000 turned out to see Bill Haley and the Comets — introduced by Red. Four times that number came out to see Elvis. “Vancouver, out of that whole 1957 tour, created the biggest stir and the biggest audience,” Red said. “We were up to 26,000 people — I mean, this is unheard of in 1957. No one rented stadiums for shows. No one, before Elvis. It was an amazing day. I’ve never forgotten it.” By this time Elvis had recorded eight No. 1 sin-

gles in two years, had made three movies and was about to release ‘Jailhouse Rock’ as his latest single. Pandemonium ensured when Red introduced him on stage. “Because it was so new, as rock and roll was, the police didn’t know how to handle it. They didn’t have enough cops. They brought in air cadets. Can you imagine? 15-year-old kids, trying to hold back the girls who are screaming and going crazy, and the ones who had the poor tickets coming down on the field — it was chaos.” Red remained friends with Elvis’ band members Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana, who in later years recounted that “they said were so scared they just got out of there. And the stage was jerry-built, it was like balsa wood, it was shaking, the crowd was surging forward — it was terrifying.” The whole concert lasted 22 minutes. And as for Elvis himself: “He had no conceit, none,” Red said. “He had vanity — he cared how he looked — but if you were sitting in a room with him, he’d talk and ask you questions. He wanted to know about people — he was a good ‘people’ guy, very laid back.” Still, there was the

“I was the first one to break ‘That’ll Be The Day,’ and I have Buddy Holly on tape introducing it. I used to sit with an old 45 cylindrical record player, I’d put a whole bunch of new releases on and listen to them while I’m doing other work. I’d pull them off if I liked them. And then I’d put them on the air and have people vote on them. ‘That’ll be the Day’ became number one. No one else was playing it. Then all of a sudden a DJ in Cleveland named Tommy Edwards started playing it, and bang! But Buddy never forgot who launched it. It was me.” DJ Red Robinson (above, left) met and interviewed Buddy Holly, when Holly came to Vancouver with “The Show of Stars” in 1957. sense that the world had changed — that something big had arrived. And by the time Red introduced the Beatles at their first ever Canadian concert, 1964 in Vancouver, that something had become earthshaking. Red recalls: “After I said, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, the Beatles,’ I got down to the edge of the stage. The kids start surging towards the stage, and I went ‘here we go again,’ and flashed back to Elvis. Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager says ‘Red, you gotta get up there and tell them to move back or we’re going to cancel.’ I said ‘What are you talking about, you don’t interrupt an act,’ and he said ‘you’re going to interrupt an act!’ Bud Errington, the police inspector, said ‘you’re the emcee, it’s your job.’ “So I go up there after
one of the songs — ‘Twist and Shout’ — and as I’m walking across the stage, the cacophony was insane; even when the Beatles aren’t playing it’s so loud. And John Lennon looks over at me and says ‘Get the f--- off my stage, nobody interrupts the Beatles.’ And I walk over to John and we’re yelling at each other, not because we’re mad but because we can’t hear each other. And Brian Epstein’s giving the high sign from the edge of the stage, and John says, ‘Oh, carry on, Mate!’ “You don’t forget stuff like that.” The radio personality of that era — the AM disc jockey — an exciting, artistic voice in its own right, hardly exists anymore. Programming is tightly controlled, and the human element is generally fading. Red cites two radio stations

he listened to on a recent trip to Palm Springs. “Except for station breaks and a couple of commercials, there’s no traffic, no human being on the air except pre-recorded, no intros to records, they don’t tell you who it was. It was a jukebox, period.
“Vancouver, out of that whole 1957 tour, created the biggest stir and the biggest audience. We were up to 26,000 people — I mean, this is unheard of in 1957. No one rented stadiums for shows. No one, before Elvis. “In my time we were nutty and did what we wanted. I loved it. What happened in those days, I’d go on the air and do a show. If I got ratings I kept my job, if I didn’t I was gone. But that’s fine — that’s show business! “We were entertainers, we were also your

I don’t want wall to wall. “The kids with earbuds, they don’t want to know about (radio of yesteryear). But if they knew how good it was, they’d love it.” The musical “Red Rock Diner,” coming to the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook, Nov. 14, captures the excitement of the era, and Vancouver’s burgeoning rock and roll scene as related by Red. The show’s narrative is five teens come of age while DJ Red Robinson plays the biggest hits of the time. “It’s basically a time capsule of when I first started out, believe it or not, on CKWX, which is now a news station, but it was the rocker in Vancouver (in the 50s). There’s a DJ, and as he introduces a record, the groups come out and perform them. It’s interactive, it’s just a riot, it’s so much fun, so fast with so much energy that I’m proud to have my name attached to it.”

Councils work on common initiatives Continued from page 1 “Between Mayor Pratt and I, we are determined to make the regional collaboration thing work,” he said. “We have a number of initiatives underway.” Pratt said the meeting consisted of information for the council members, as well as some details on initiatives he and McCormick have been working on that included the Industrial Advisory Committee and another Cranbrook-Kimberley development initiative. “It’s in the very early stages right now but we
just wanted to bring the councils up to speed on that and how it’s progressing,” Pratt said. McCormick added: “Over time Kimberley and Cranbrook have really behaved on their own with respect to their own economic strategies. But we’re small communities — even Cranbrook is a small community, when you look at what the resources are to attract industry, and so the whole idea of pooling resources and coming up with a regional strategy for doing that is
one that just makes sense — so that is one we’ve been trying to do for the past couple months.” A delegation from North Star Rails To Trails was at the meeting to update the two councils on their progress. “That was good because let’s face it, the Rails to Trails is both communities, so it was good for them to get both councils at once,” Pratt said. McCormick said that Rails to Trails is a class A amenity that has become an attraction for

tourists and locals who use it on a regular basis. The trail cuts through three jurisdictions, Cranbrook, Kimberley and the Regional District of East Kootenay. “The society that has been managing Rails to Trails has been struggling over the five years that it’s been open in terms of how to maintain it, how to kind of build the amenities on the trail and keep it up to date,” McCormick said. The society has now come to the two cities asking for help and more funding. Since then, the CAOs and representatives from the society in both cities have gotten to-
gether to figure out ways to take some pressure off the society. “And come up with a plan to keep that thing a class A amenity,” he said. At the meeting Tuesday, the councils were brought up to speed. At the meeting Chris New, the director of Leisure Services, also gave a brief overview of the Kimberley Cranbrook 55+ Games. “It’s very early in the planning stages for that too,” Pratt said. “He just let us know that first and foremost the emphasis is on Vernon. As soon as that is over we’ll get a lot more involvement with the directors and that of the 55+ Games committee to
see where we’re going and what events are involved.” “That’s a big endeavour, there’s going to be several thousand people coming into our communities for those games,” McCormick said. “We’re a couple years away right now — it is early days.” The meeting also touched on the Resort Municipality Initiative. Pratt said that while that was more focused on Kimberley, it was quite informative for he and council. “I think that could be a target for us, to come up with some sort of initiative that our communities can get involved together on it and get a bigger share of the pie,”
Pratt said. Pratt said the feedback he’s heard from those in attendance was positive. “It’s time that the two communities did get together and start working on common goals,” Pratt said. “We’re going to have another meeting sometime in the new year, and probably the discussion will be around two or three meetings a year.” He said the discussions around the dinner before the meeting involved the usual pleasantries, but also the comon issues both municipalities face. “We all have the same problems of course,” Pratt said.

Students can leave their entries with their teachers, and those entries will be dropped off at the Legion office on or before the Nov. 13 deadline. First, second and third place winners are presented with an award and a certificate. Last year, there were 41 winners locally, three of which advanced beyond zones and into the B.C./Yukon command, while Alexis Shuffler’s black and white poster went all the way to Ottawa. “We can’t thank the
schools and the teachers involved with the students enough, that lend their support behind this because it’s really good to have the kids involved,” Brown added. Remembrance Day is still two weeks away, but Brown and the Legion are beginning to finalize plans for the ceremony in Cranbrook. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Byng Hotel and head to Rotary Park for the Remembrance Day service. After the ceremony, the public is welcome to come to the Legion office at 1 p.m. for a barbecue.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ELKO WARNING SYSTEM PROJECT COMPLETED Owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Elko Dam and Generating Station is located near the community of Elko, 30 kilometres west of Fernie. The Elk River is considered one of the best kayaking and rafting rivers in the East Kootenay. People come from across North America and the world to recreate on the river, however, they may still be uninformed of the extreme danger of being on the river between the Elko Dam and the Powerhouse. To address these safety concerns, we’ve designed and installed a warning system at Elko Dam to inform people in the canyon of impending spillway gate changes. The project includes the installation of sirens, strobe lights, improved safety fencing, and additional warning signs between the dam and the powerhouse. This warning system doesn’t inform river users downstream of the powerhouse. Safety is our number one priority. We’ve installed this system to raise awareness of river hazards associated with dam operations, to improve safety and to ensure that people in the canyon are aware of sudden changes in water levels. Please note that the land on both sides of the Elk River from the Elko Dam to the Elko Powerhouse is BC Hydro property. For public safety reasons, access to this section of the river across BC Hydro property isn’t permitted. If you have any questions, or would like more information about the Elko Warning System, please contact Sally MacDonald, Community Relations, at 250 489 6841 or sally.macdonald@bchydro.com.

Marking and Defying Death with the Saints
I
n my column last week, I mentioned how much I hated some of the euphemisms we use to mask what’s really going on — like “collateral damage”, among others. We use euphemisms a lot when we talk about death. We don’t talk about people dying anymore. We say that she has “passed on”; or “we lost him this week”; or he was “promoted to glory” or “entered into eternal rest”; or “God needed a new angel in heaven”. We use euphemisms like this because we are uncomfortable with death and dying. Up till the last 150 years or so, people were so much more accustomed to facing death. Families would lovingly wash and prepare the body for burial after death. All of that changed with the rise of the funeral industry. We have handed that final act of caring to professionals who do it for us. These days, we live in what theologian Douglas John Hall calls “the officially optimistic society”. In such a society, we don’t talk about death. Rather, our society regularly engages in what philosopher Ernest Becker calls “the denial of death.” While we seem to have a nearly insatiable appetite for horrifyingly graphic images of violence and death in our television shows, movies, videogames, and news, we simultaneously appear increasingly to be in denial of the common, everyday, garden variety of death which awaits each of us. So we hide behind euphemisms. Did you know that the US Air Force no longer reports that pilots who crash in combat or training have died? Apparently they experienced “uncontrolled landings into terrain”. In the same way, the army reports
not how many of their soldiers died but rather the number of casualties their units suffered. Hospitals also don’t talk about their patients dying, but speak of their “expiring”. We are afraid of death, so we hide behind euphemisms. So when the church celebrates All Saints’ Day on November 1, we are doing something incredibly counter–cultural and counterintuitive. This festival stands in stark contrast to a culture which worships youth and boasts that “you can have it all.” Rev. Yme On All Saints’ Day, we lift Woensdregt up our mortality and celebrate the life of all those who have died. Not those who have “passed on” or those who have been “lost” (like a pair of gloves), or those who have “expired”. We celebrate those who have died in the faith. The word “saint” comes from a Greek word meaning “holy ones”, which itself comes from a Hebrew word meaning “set apart” for God’s use. A saint, in other words, is someone who belongs to God, who is loyal to God, who lives according to God’s gospel purposes in the world. The Roman Catholic Church uses a much more narrow and technical definition when they call someone a saint. To be declared a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, a candidate must meet several tests, the most important being to live a life of heroic virtue and to be involved in two miracles. In this way, both Pope John Paul 2 and Pope John 23 were canonized, recognized as saints in April 2014. I prefer a broader understanding of the word “saint”. All Saints’ Day affirms the re-

ality of God’s presence in the world in the lives of all those in whom God’s love shines into the world. A church in Regina was called All Saints Church. Their motto was, “We are All Saints!” They understood that God was at work in their lives, and that they were called to show God’s love in their daily lives. That’s what a saint does. That’s who a saint is. In 1929, Lesbia Scott wrote a poem for her children. It became a hymn for All Saints’ Day. The first verse reads, “I sing a song of the saints of God, / patient and brave and true, / who toiled and fought and lived and died / for the Lord they loved and knew. / And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, / and one was a shepherdess on the green; / they were all of them saints of God, and I mean, / God helping, to be one too.” A saint, said 19th century Danish theologian Soren Kierkegaard, is someone whose life manages to be “a cranny through which the infinite peeps”. The early 20th century novelist Laurence Housman wrote that “a saint is someone who makes goodness attractive.” On this day, we celebrate all those who have died, who have gone before us in faith. We proclaim boldly and with great hope that death no longer terrifies us. We can look death in the eye and not blink. Equally importantly, we also say that life no longer terrifies us either. Our whole life is now sanctified, made holy. Our lives are given a purpose, which is that God’s love will be made real in, through, and with us as we dare to live it out. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

he decade from 1923-1933, saw the trappings of classical composers wedged firmly in the back of the Cranbrook musical closet. Oh, there was plenty of live music: the Edmondson, Robinson, Novak, Bluebird, Gem, Revellers, Linnell, Royal Harmony Boys, Paramount, and Happy Five Orchestras kept people dancing throughout the flapper years and well into the Depression of the 1930s, but for those who preferred the symphonic genre there was little else but radio and phonograph. In October, 1932, Mr. William Raven, a recent arrival, formed the Cranbrook Symphony Orchestra, borrowing the name of the group of nearly 20 years earlier. The first performance took place in February, 1933, at the old Cranbrook Auditorium and was, according to the local review, “a pretentious concert program of high class music rendered without apparent flaw.” The orchestra consisted of 26 musicians including names such as Fiorentino, Ward, Fink, Mansfield, Burton, Kay, LaFleur and Graham. The Orchestra, often joined by a choral group, continued playing regular concerts over the next three years to audiences of varying size and covering pieces from Handel to Rachmaninoff and all points in between. A smaller 13 piece ensemble handled the occasional dance, featuring “the music of the singing strings, the brazen brass and the rhythmic reeds”. Sadly, the orchestra went bust when Mr. Raven moved away in the mid-1930s. Despite an attempt to reform the band in 1938 — foiled by the advent of the Second World War — things stayed symphonically south for pretty much the next 40 years. The City Boy’s Band, the Cranbrook Girls Bugle Band and the high school concert band helped to fill the gap but it was, all in all, a long barren stretch for classical music in the city. The Vancouver Symphony made an appearance at the Memorial Arena in 1958, playing for an afternoon crowd of 1,300 students (required attendance) and an evening show of 600. A Courier newspaper editorial pointed out that Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” proved “that a symphonic or-

Ice look for revenge as Wheat Kings visit Cranbrook Opportunity knocks as Kootenay Ice look to string together consecutive victories
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
There’s plenty of reason to dig into the memory bank this week if you’re the Kootenay Ice. For starters, the Brandon Wheat Kings (9-3-0-2) cut a swath into Cranbrook Friday night -- the first time the two teams will have met since the Wheaties unleashed a 13-1 beating on the visiting Ice back on Oct. 9 in Brandon. But secondly, and perhaps most importantly, the Ice (3-11-1-0) are fresh off a 5-4 overtime victory against the Edmonton Oil Kings -- a win that not only served as relief from a fivegame losing streak, but could represent a turning point in the 2015-16 WHL season. After all, the 2014-15 edition of the Kootenay Ice started the campaign 3-13-0-0 before going on an absolute tear -- 15-4-0-0 from November through to Christmas -- in order to pull back into the WHL’s Eastern Conference playoff picture. Granted the 2014-15 and 2015-16 versions of the Kootenay Ice are radically different, there’s nothing to suggest a turnaround isn’t in the cards. “I don’t think you can compare this year’s team with last year’s team but we can definitely gain momentum and build off that win

we had in Edmonton,” said captain Luke Philp Thursday afternoon prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “We’re looking to get better every day here, so that was big and we’re definitely going to try and build off that.” Philp helped lead the way to Monday’s victory with a four-point effort and as a result, vaulted into the WHL’s top-10 in scoring with nine goals and 21 points through 15 games. On Philp’s flank Monday, as he has been nearly all season long, was winger Zak Zborosky, who registered the overtime-winning goal in a four-point performance of his own -- a single-game career high. Both Philp and Zborosky were around for last season’s slow start and subsequent surge, so if anyone is going to
continue to lead the way towards the playoff picture, it’s these two. “Yeah, I could see it as a turning point. In the last couple games, we’ve been close -- all those one-goal games,” Zborosky said Thursday. “I think [the win in Edmonton] was a learning game. If we can continue to play like that and play a full 60 [minutes] -- not give up those goals in the last five minutes, we should be okay.” Including Monday’s overtime triumph, the Ice have found their way into seven one-goal games so far this season. So while the look in the standings might seem dire, there’s no arguing the fact this team has, on most nights, competed hard and had a shot at victory. The last time the Ice met with the Wheat Kings, might leave one

the team set to take to the ice against the Wheat Kings Friday night is not the same team that was thumped three weeks ago. “We’re a different team than we were even
two weeks ago,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Ice, Thursday. “They’re going through some stuff, too, and they’re obviously going to be hungry. We’ll have to be good, there’s no question. “You have to respect their talent, but you can’t be scared. We’ve got to be aggressive and challenge them -- take away time and space -all the things you hear bantam coaches talk about. If we sit back and try to just defend, we’re going to be in trouble. We need to make them play without the puck as much as we can.” The Wheat Kings are
in the midst of an eightgame road trip, which started well enough with wins in Saskatoon, Spokane and Tri-City, before spiralling into back-toback five-goal losses in Portland (5-0, Oct. 25) and Seattle (7-2, Oct. 27). The mighty Wheaties bounced back with a 3-2 overtime win against the Everett Silvertips Wednesday night. There’s no doubt the Ice are looking to add to the road woes of the Wheat Kings when they visit Western Financial Place Friday night. “As players, we have to be a little ticked off that that happened to us,” Philp said. “It was
pretty embarrassing. We’re going to come out with a much better effort. “They have a lot of good players. They come at you in waves. They have a lot of guys who can score. They’ve got good ‘D’ and good goaltending -- they’re a good team. You can’t look at any particular guy to shutdown. You have to focus on what we can do and not what they’re going to bring.” Puck drop between the Ice and Wheat Kings is set for 7 p.m. on College Night at Western Financial Place.
More questions than answers surround Anthopoulos departure from Blue Jays Neil Davidson Canadian Press
The same day he was named Major League Baseball’s executive of the year, Alex Anthopoulos found himself trying to explain why he was facing unemployment. In a surprising turn of events, the Toronto Blue Jays parted ways with their chief architect Thursday - less than a week after coming within one inning of forcing Game 7 in the American League Championship Series. Anthopoulos said it was his choice, with the final decision coming late Wednesday after-
noon. “I just didn’t feel like this was the right fit for me going forward,” Anthopoulos told reporters in a conference call Thursday. “Not an easy (decision). Obviously everyone knows how I feel about the organization, the city, the country.” “By no means was this an easy decision but it was one that I felt I needed to make ... I own this decision. This is on me 100 per cent,” he added. It was a classy if confusing exit. Despite repeated questions, Anthopoulos did not elaborate on
why he is leaving, other than to say that he wanted to be true to himself and that the impasse was not due to a financial disagreement. But the GM’s departure comes during a changeover in Jays management with Mark Shapiro, the former Cleveland Indians president, taking over from the departing Paul Beeston as president and CEO. “This decision is solely mine. Mark gave me every opportunity to return. He was sincere in wanting me back ... (Team owner) Rogers and Mark were more than generous, I mean
extremely generous,” Anthopoulos said. “I don’t know that it’s fair to really get into any specifics out of respect to Rogers, to Mark, to the Blue Jays, to the organization,” added the Montreal native. Anthopoulos left more questions than answers. He said he wanted to be back and that ownership and his new boss wanted him to stay. But clearly the team’s new landscape was not one he could live with. He declined to say why it was not a good fit. But he went out of his way to praise Shapiro
and Rogers, stressing that the baseball team is in good hands. “I know this is not an easy day for anybody ... I don’t think any of us wanted this to happen.” Anthopoulos, 38, turned down a five-year contract extension, amid speculation of a difference in vision with Shapiro who does not officially take up his new job until Monday. Unlike Beeston, Shapiro is a president immersed in the baseball side - and one who clearly has his own views on how to run a club. Shapiro and Anthopoulos don’t appear
to be on the same page, although Anthopoulos rejected the suggestion of a power struggle. Anthopoulos said he did not have another job lined up, although he said his phone “exploded” Thursday once news of his pending departure broke. “My focus was on the Toronto Blue Jays and it will be really through Saturday, at least. What happens after that, I’ve no idea.” He said he would take time to “recalibrate” and evaluate his options. Anthopoulos was named Sporting News’ 2015 Major League
Baseball Executive of the Year, as selected by a panel of 47 major-league executives in voting prior to the post-season. “I’m very honoured and grateful,” said Anthopoulos, the first Jays executive to win the award. Beeston, an unabashed backer of Anthopoulos, confirmed in a statement earlier Thursday that the team’s popular GM and senior vice-president of baseball operations was leaving.

Continued from page 6
“After an exciting 2015 season, Alex Anthopoulos has reluctantly and regrettably decided that he is not going to return to the Toronto Blue Jays baseball club for 2016,” said Beeston. “Alex has done an unbelievable job and positioned us well for the future. He can take great pride in his past and while we do not know where his future is taking him, we do know wherever he is going, he will be successful.” Anthopoulos, then assistant general manager, took over as Toronto’s GM in 2009 after J.P. Ricciardi was fired. The Jays went 489483 under Anthopoulos, according to Sportsnet, but soared this year. The GM earned kudos for a string of moves that produced a thrilling 93-69 campaign and a return to the playoffs after 22 years. Fans across the country followed the Jays’ wild post-season run and Thursday’s divorce was unexpected in the wake of team’s playoff success. “Alex has done a terrific job as GM of the Blue Jays over the past six seasons, and we would have loved it if he stayed with the club,” Edward Rogers, chairman of the Toronto Blue Jays, said in a separate statement. “Like the fans, we too are disappointed he has chosen not to accept our five-year contract offer, but we wish him the very best. Alex leaves behind an outstanding front office team and coaching staff that played a key role in shaping the team’s great run this season.” The departure of Anthopoulos raises questions over the future of his handpicked support team. Manager John Gibbons is on a rolling contract - 2016 is already in place with another year set to be added Jan. 1. Ironically his split with the Jays came days after his finest moment - with the team going 11 games deep into the playoffs. He helped end the team’s playoff drought by retooling in the off-season and then showing some impressive sleight of hand before the trade deadline. Signing Canadian catcher Russell Martin

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) Tension surrounds others in your day-to-day life. You mean well, and people sense that quality in you. Don’t sell yourself short. Know that a loved one’s nerves might be frayed, and use your intuition and sensitivity with him or her. Tonight: Have a last-minute chat about Halloween. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Be aware of how indulgence plays into your budget. Someone who benefits from your generosity could be manipulating you to get more. Learn how to say “no” more. You could be inspired by a pal to do something very different this Halloween. Tonight: Let the good times roll. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might not be evoking the response you desire from a loved one. Manipulation won’t work. You also could be missing important facts. A boss or parent demands an inordinate amount of your attention. Make it your pleasure. Tonight: Out on the town.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Maintain a low profile. You’ll need to gather your strength for the weekend. You could be heading to Halloween celebrations or getting a costume ready. Be sensitive to someone’s request. Make it OK to say “no,” as you might be off-kilter. Tonight: Reach out to a loved one. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Zero in on a friendship. You could find that there is an element about this person that encourages you to overindulge. Rein in your self-discipline if need be. A partner or loved one will be unusually seductive. Tonight: Let a friend lure you into his or her Halloween plans. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others often talk about their expectations but do nothing. You might want to challenge them. When you’re in a leadership position, you know how to encourage people. Manifest those skills, and add a touch of personality. Tonight: The party could go till the wee hours. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Investigate the possibilities
Tundra
rather than nix anyone’s idea. In fact, a suggestion that seems far out of left field could prove to be a gift when you start working with it. Your inner voice might be pushing you in a certain direction. Listen to it. Tonight: Try a new spot. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might be intrigued by a loved one’s plans. Friends seem to pull you into an unrelated realm, but you will enjoy the diversity. Expect the unexpected, or you could be wary without knowing why. Tonight: You choose where and with whom you want to be. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Defer to a partner who is more social than you are. You could be all over the map about an issue, whereas this person is not. Focus on what is ailing you. Don’t forget what is happening with a family member. You can’t just ignore this issue. Tonight: Follow the gang. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Pace yourself, as you have a lot of ground to cover. An adviser or friend might present the facts
in a new light, which is likely to open up a new door. You could be surprised by a new path that you had not yet considered. Tonight: Hang out with great friends and a few goblins. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Creativity surges with each imaginative comment, suggestion or plan you come up with. Your friends and family will delight in brainstorming with you. Drop the word “impossible” from your vocabulary. You will be happier as a result. Tonight: Use your imagination. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Sometimes you simply are not in the mood to deal with pressure. How you deal with these moments can have a long-term effect on your relationships. Tension mounts, despite your efforts. Erase negative thoughts and see what happens. Tonight: Dress up like a couch potato. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar
Dear Annie: My husband and I have been happily married for 20 years. After the kids were grown, we decided to downsize. We put our home on the market and moved to a different state. My husband’s mother did not want us to move. She started interfering with the real estate office that was showing our house. She was given written warnings to stay away from the property. She then stripped all our perennials and trellises and took the picnic table and hoses -- anything she could get off the property. She left a huge mess, and I had to pay someone to clean it up. She wouldn’t stop, so I finally called law enforcement. Now members of the family have labeled me “psycho” because I filed a complaint, but the local police haven’t done anything. Mom continues to arrive at showings and claims she is the caretaker. What can I do to stop this woman without breeding more ill will? -- Fed-Up Psycho Dear Fed Up: Your mother-in-law’s behavior is outrageous. Where is your husband in all this? He should quite firmly inform his mother that her punitive and destructive actions must stop immediately or she risks estrangement from his family. It is obvious that she is so frightened and upset by your departure that she believes her only recourse is sabotage. You both need to reassure her that living elsewhere will not keep you from calling, writing and visiting often. If she is incapable of adjusting, however, suggest she get professional help. It sounds like she could use it. Dear Annie: I am a 15-year-old freshman. My best friend, “Ella,” recently told me she is constantly depressed. She said she’s tired of living behind a mask and wants people to understand. Ella told me she’s thought about cutting herself. She is usually a bright and cheery person, so this came as a shock. I can’t help thinking that maybe I never knew the real girl. She absolutely refuses to talk to her parents because she dislikes them. To me they seem like great parents, but I don’t live in her house. What should I do? I don’t want to let Ella down in her time of need. -Trying To Understand Dear Trying: If Ella won’t talk about this with her parents, encourage her to talk to the school counselor, a favorite teacher or another trusted adult. Suggest she get some exercise. It boosts endorphin levels and could make her feel better. You are a good friend to care about Ella’s mental health. Both of you can get more information through the teens site at kidshealth.org. You also should discuss this with your own parents so they can help you work on it. Education/Trade Schools Are you SINGLE and OVER 50, looking to meet new friends for weekly and monthly activities?
April 7, 1946 to October 25, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Dad, Peter. He died while doing what he loved most, hiking in the mountains with friends. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 41 years, Maureen, his children: Julie (Adam), Annalise (Mat), Shaun and Melissa (Will). He is survived by his brothers Dick and Bob and predeceased by his parents, Red and Audrey, and his siblings Mike and Carol. Peter was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and grew up on a farm 4 miles east of Coaldale. In the summers, between the ages of 14 and 23 he herded domestic sheep on his family’s mountain lease in the Kananaskis. This led him to university where he earned three degrees, preparing him for a career as a biologist. In 1982 he got his dream job working with the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, where he inspired people to participate and become part of their recovery success. Peter was actively involved with the Rocky Mountain Naturalist Society, Rocky Mountain Trench Society and East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council. He sang with the Sun Valley Song Choir, Chuck Bissett Choir, and for whoever else needed a strong, good looking tenor. He shared his passion, his respect for, and love of the great outdoors with everyone he met. Special thanks to the members of the Rocky Mountain Naturalists and emergency 911 personnel. And huge thanks to Cst. Brad Sabo and Dr. Gerry McIntyre for their compassion and sense of humour. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday October 31 at Christ Church Anglican, 46 13th Avenue S, Cranbrook BC. Memorial Donations can be made to Christ Church Anglican Memorial Fund.
It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our father Roy Beduz. Roy, born and raised in Kimberley, BC, began his career with Cominco and met his wife Joan at the Phosphate Mine, Cominco America, MT. Married on October 6th, 1956, they arrived in Yellowknife, NT in the dead of winter that year to start their lives together and eventually raise their two children, Judi and Brian, while Roy worked at Con Mine. Roy completed his Cominco career at Polaris Mine, Little Cornwallis Island, NU. His next career took Roy and Joan to the Queen Charlotte Islands, BC where Roy worked in the capacity of Maintenance Superintendent for the School District until his retirement. Roy and Joan spent their remaining years in Marysville, BC. Roy is predeceased by Joan, his wife of 59 years. He leaves behind his son Brian and his wife Lorraine, his daughter Judi (Cozzetto) and her husband Terry, his brother Louis and sister-in-law Meta, brother-in-law John Mollenberg, nieces and nephews, and his little canine companion Pepper. The interment will take place at the Kimberley Cemetery later this year. Forever loved and greatly missed.

Provenzano, The Honourable Michelangelo September 22, 1922 – October 19, 2015
Following a long and healthy life well lived, Mike died in his hometown of Cranbrook, BC at the age of 93. The third of Lucia and Francesco Provenzano’s four children, he was predeceased by his wife Charlotte, brothers Angelo and Giuseppe and sister Julia. He is survived by his sons Michael and Philip (Christie) and grandchildren David, Katarina, Sophia and Maya. Raised in Cranbrook, Mike enrolled in the University of Alberta but joined the Canadian Air Force after one year, serving as a flight instructor during WWII. Following the war, he attended UBC law school and married his high school sweetheart Charlotte Wilks. He graduated in 1949 and returned to Cranbrook to practice law and raise his family. Mike was appointed a Judge of the County Court in 1963, became a Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia when the courts merged in 1990 and retired in 1992. He was quietly pleased that few of his judgements were overturned. Mike loved life, including golf, skiing, summers at his Monroe Lake cabin and especially desserts. He enjoyed skiing and golf until his 80s, but enjoyed desserts into his 90s. He also loved being a part of Cranbrook family dinners hosted by his nieces Marian, Joan and Jerri-Pat and grand-niece Lisa. He lived independently and drove a car until he was 92. His was a long and full life. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 7th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cranbrook, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society (http://bit.ly/1POffGS) in memory of Mike. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. The children love the new carpet at Tumble Time! Tumble Time is a free drop in program for families with children from birth to 5 years of age, provided by the Community Action Program for Children (CAPC). Tumble Time is located in the lower level of St. Mary’s Independent Catholic School. Now with the new carpet over top of what used to be a cement floor, it’s safer, softer, quieter and cozier. The play space that houses Tumble Time is also used by Montessori Preschool as well as St. Mary’s Daycare who are also enjoying the new flooring. St. Mary’s Catholic Independent School and their Parent Support Group donated the largest portion of the funding for the carpet. Donations were also made by the Cranbrook Women’s Ministry Network of the Cranbrook United Church as well as Cranbrook Flooring who in-
