Roz Nay sells psychological thriller
WILL JOHNSON
West Kootenay Advertiser
Three years ago Nelson writer Roz Nay signed up for a Selkirk College writing class — she felt like she needed a hobby to sustain her through the winter — and ended up writing a 2,000-word story called “Your Wife is a Psycho.” Last month she sold the novel-length version of that story, Our Little Secret, to Simon & Schuster. “My husband signed me up for the course with Almeda Glenn Miller,” Nay told the Star. “She honestly lit a fire under me. I’d done a little bit of writing, and I liked to write, but I hadn’t really done much. I remember that winter it was the highlight of my life. I never missed a class.” Nay’s book, told from the perspective of a lonely Vermont high schooler named Angela, follows her through a decade of her life. “Angela’s very clever. She doesn’t quite fit in, she’s always pining for a a lost time and she’s quite narcissistic,” said Nay. “She doesn’t believe her life is as it should be.” At one point titled Faker, Nay ultimately changed the
Nelson writer Roz Nay has sold her psychological thriller to a major publisher. Blaise Enright photo manuscript title to give it a more “conspiratorial” flavour. “When I first wrote it in the woman’s voice who was
telling the story, I just felt she had so much more to say. Angela thinks this little town she’s living in, a place called Cove, is a cookie-cutter clean fake town. It’s all about who’s telling the truth and who isn’t, who lies and who doesn’t.” Nay said it surprises her that she’s produced a thriller. “I kind of stumbled into this genre. I don’t read psychological thrillers, usually I watch them on TV. My agent asked haven’t you read Girl on the Train or anything else that’s exploding? I have now, but back then I hadn’t. I didn’t know I would write psychological thrillers — I thought I was going to be funny!” In the book she explores themes of loneliness. “I look for it and I see it everywhere, that melancholy. There are other things that link humans, but loneliness definitely does — in a ironic way, though, because it’s not actually a link.” Angela begins the story “entrenched” in high school and spends much of the rest of the decade entangled in a love triangle. During that time a five-year-old child goes missing. The book is slated for a 2017 release.

Fruitvale native Tom Samulak performed at the Grand Ole Opry Oct. 24.

Fruitvale native makes Grand Ole Opry debut Valerie Rossi West Kootenay Advertiser
Fruitvale native Tom Samulak wouldn’t let a punctured tire stop him from performing at the Grand Ole Opry. The guitarist from Haley and Michaels said he pulled over to fill his tire with air, adding “I would have driven on my rim if I had to. The band composed of country music duo Shannon Haley and Ryan Michaels, Samulak and fellow guitarist Klaus Luchs had its Grand Opry debut Oct. 24. The performance was backed by the Opry house band made up of legendary A-list session players. “(It was) simply surreal and incredible, he told the Times.“This has been one of my goals for years. It feels great to have your goals come to fruition. The Grand Ole Opry is a weekly country music stage concert in Nashville, Tenn., that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world and millions of radio and Inter-
net listeners. The Opry started as a one-hour radio barn dance on WSM in 1925. Currently, owned by Opry Entertainment, it is the longestrunning radio broadcast in U.S. history. Dedicated to honouring country music and its history, the Opry showcases a mix of legends and contemporary chart-toppers performing country, bluegrass, folk, gospel and comedic performances and skits. Most recently that list included Samulak, who was grateful his family could be there to take in the special occasion. “I think we all cried a little bit after, he added. “There is only one first time in the Opry. “You can feel the history in the building: the walls, the backstage, the stage itself, it’s all something to behold. I soaked it up and loved every minute of it. The 25-year-old is currently rehearsing new material with the band all while working on a project of his own for a self-release. “The project I’m working on features yours truly on lead vocals and lead guitar, he said.
“Lately I have been training my voice with some of the best vocal coaches in the business, trying to catch my singing up to my guitar playing. Some of his musical influences right now include Steve Earle, ZZ Top, Brad Paisley, and Chris Stapleton and he expects this will come out in his sound. Samulak started taking guitar lessons locally with Pricilla Cole at about 10 years old and then from radio personality Wayne Kelly. His interest piqued in Grade 8 when he enrolled in his school’s band program. After completing the Selkirk College music program, Samulak won one of 12 Fred Sherratt Awards. At 19 years old, he traveled Europe to explore the jazz scene. After graduation from Berklee College of Music, he set off on a career path that continues to grow. Nowadays, the acoustic and electric six-string guitarist lives in Nashville, where he’s fine-tuning his sound immersed in the country-music scene.

Place names HANDLE WITH CARE
Greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
One hundred eighteenth in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Last week we saw that in 1897, two townsites existed on Lemon Creek in the Slocan Valley: one where the railway was expected to cross, known as Del Monte or Lemon Creek Crossing, and the other at the confluence of Lemon and Summit creeks, known as Summit or just Lemon Creek. A post office application filed on Oct. 2 of that year by residents of the former town suggested the name Lemonton. The attached petition had almost 60 names, including employees of a recently established sawmill as well as miners and prospectors. The postal inspector’s report stated: “The name of the station at the site of the proposed office here has been changed to Lemon Creek. Lemonton is the name of a new townsite about 12 miles east of the Lemon Creek station up Lemon Creek.” In fact, it was probably the other way around, but in any case, a post office didn’t open and Lemon Creek Crossing became better known as Lemon Creek Siding, or just Lemon Siding. The earliest mention of the latter was in The Ledge of Nov. 16, 1899: “A large stable will be built at Lemon siding.” A post office application was filed again in late 1900 in the name of Lemon Creek, but postal authorities didn’t believe it was necessary and it never opened. Oddly, a much later reference to Lemonton is found in the Slocan Mining Review of June 11, 1908: “It
A division of
is stated here that the wagon road from Slocan City to Lemonton will probably be extended to Perry Siding this summer … Several buildings have been erected on the local ranches recently, a barn on the Anderson ranch at Lemonton being the biggest undertaking.” Meanwhile, unsold lots in the other Lemon Creek townsite, which never fulfilled its potential, were to be auctioned off. But The Ledge of Sept. 19, 1901 reported a snag: “For some weeks past the Government Agent at Kaslo has been advertising to sell at public auction government lots in Lemon Creek townsite. Last week the agent went down to Slocan City to see if he could find the townsite … After investigating for a day or two and not being able to get within eight miles of its exact location, the agent wired to Victoria for permission to withdraw the sale. It was granted and the agent is now out with a search warrant for the government lots in the townsite of Lemon Creek.” The land finally reverted to the government in 1904. A few sources also mention a place called Lemon City, but it’s not always clear which townsite they’re referring to. An ad in the British Columbia Gazette of Jan. 13, 1898 read: “Notice is hereby given that application will be made … to build and equip and maintain waggon [sic] roads from … Slocan City to Lemon City, on Lemon Creek …” Clara Graham wrote in Kootenay Mosaic: “From the south end of Slocan Lake trails led up Springer and Lemon Creeks and on the latter was situated Lemon City, now another ghost town.”

This postcard of Lemon Creek was mailed from Slocan to a T.J. Fowle of Vernon. The message, by W.R. Clay of Valhalla Ranch, is dated May 21, 1913. Greg Nesteroff collection And in West Kootenay: Ghost Town Country, Bill Barlee referred to Lemon City as “a short-lived railway camp founded in the 1890s when the CPR was building the Columbia and Western Railway to Slocan City.”
The Nelson Daily News of Aug. 7, 1937 said Lemon City was another name for Oro — a ghost town often confused with the Lemon Creek townsite on Summit Creek. We’ll deal with Oro separately in this series.

Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC (HFHSEBC ) has announced the recipients of the new home construction in Westbridge that will replace a residence destroyed by the recent wildfire. Dale and J.D. Winn and their four children are the family the organization will be helping get back on their feet after losing everything to the fire. Joining Habitat in rebuilding the Wynn family home will be another organization renowned for their volunteer response: Mennonite Disaster Services has pledged their support to partner with Habitat and the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee in the construction of the Winns’ new residence. Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with Heather Smith of the Yellow Door Boutique, is also presenting a fashion show and silent auction at Greenwood’s McArthur Centre on Nov. 7, with proceeds going toward the rebuilding of the Winn home. The event gets under way at 3 p.m. and is expected to last three hours. HFHSEBC has to date built 20 homes within the region with the Rock Creek home to be the 21st.
Bob Huff, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Southeast B.C. stands behind Dale Winn and son Colton, whose family home was destroyed by the Rock Creek fire. The good news for local animal control is the BCSPCA had a change of heart. The group will continue picking up and housing furry and feathered friends at the Trail BCSPCA branch for the time being, despite an earlier stance it was no longer interested in providing animal control services past the current contract, which expires Dec. 31. Regional partners opted for a new agreement but on a quarterly basis, taking into account unknowns about the facility’s impending move. “The site selection is not resolved,” Trail Mayor Mike Martin explained. “They hope to have the relocation established before the end of 2016,” he added. “Then deter-
mine whether it would be in the best interest of both parties to continue a longer term contractual agreement.” At this point, Mark Takhar, BCSPCA’s chief operations officer said the organization is considering moving the Trail branch to Castlegar, though plans won’t come into play until later next year. “We are aggressively looking for a potential place where we can build a new shelter or even look at properties that have a building we can retrofit,” Takhar told the Trail Times. “Castlegar has come to us with a couple of different proposals that we are looking at very closely,” he added. “They are very appealing to us...we are looking at what’s best for us with limited funds. But wherever we end up relocating, we will make the ultimate decision at that time about what to do with the services we provide.”
Castlegar teen to compete in Freeride Junior World Championships Betsy Kline West Kootenay Advertiser
Castlegar skier Jeff Ashton received some exciting news last week. The 17 year old was notified by the Junior Freeride World Tour that his competition results from last year had qualified him for the 2016 Freeride Junior World Championships. The championships will be held at the Grandvalira Resort in Andorra (a tiny country between France and Spain in the Pyrenees moun-
tains) on January 26-30. “I am unbelievably excited as I will be one of only four Canadian male athletes attending this event and will be one of only about 40 of the best athletes from around the globe competing for the first place title,” said Ashton. He won’t have very far to travel to the competition as he is currently residing in France as part of a one year Rotary student exchange. Ashton has been skiing competitively for the last five years, participating in about 35 Freeski competitions. He has qualified
for the IFSA North American Championships the last three years in a row. After being a part of the Red Mountain Freeski Academy for four years, Ashton switched over to the Whitewater Freeski team for the 2015 season. “My last year has been my most successful yet as I ended up with a few top 5 results in both national and regional competitions and at the end of the season ended up ranked 12th out of 332 athletes in North America and in the top 3 in Canada,” said Ashton.

The City of Castlegar has installed two turkey crossing signs on Columbia Ave. to remind drivers to look out for rafters of wild turkeys and avoid accidents. “People for over a year have been telling some of us council people that they had to slam on their breaks because turkeys were crossing and then it had the reaction where everybody’s slamming on their breaks,” said Councillor Sue HeatonSherstobitoff. “Some people had little minor fender benders. A couple of people actually had hit the turkeys and they actually came up on the windshield and cracked the windshield.” The signs are also meant to help protect the animals. As there were no turkey crossing signs commercially available, the city had to have the signs specially made.

Awesome third year planned for Youth Action Network Chelsea Novak West Kootenay Advertiser
Launched in September 2013, the Rossland Youth Action Network (YAN) started off its third year of programming for youth this fall. They brought back their popular programs like the maker lab and drop-in art night, and now that they have a new space, they are doing even more. The space is now open Monday to Thursday, from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for after school drop-in, where kids can hang out, get help with homework, and even get help applying for jobs. There are also four other drop-in programs running Monday to Thursday. Monday nights are art nights, where kids can come by and have space to create without instruction or fees. Tuesday is the new music night, where Lise Levesque hosts an evening of music-making. “We’re doing that as a drop-in. We’re doing it that way for about five or six weeks, and then depending on what the youth who are coming want it to be, then we might make it more focused,” said Mike Kent, YAN’s coordinator. Wednesdays are for girl talk, where girls aged 14 to 18 years old can drop in and hangout sans boys. And Thursdays are maker lab nights. Now that YAN is in its new location, the maker lab has been moved to a dedicated space in the basement. The program allows kids to learn about technology in practical ways. During the summer, kids constructed a 3D
scanner so they could create models to print on a 3D printer. Now they’re hoping to create a 3D printer from scratch. “We’ll buy some parts, we’ll print some parts, and we’ll have a second 3D printer,” said Kent. Other fall programs Following a workshop with the McCreary Centre Society in August, YAN kids are also participating in a Next Steps youth health project. The first step is finalizing what the project will be. “It was really broad, you know, they said it could be anything around youth health,” said Kent. So far youth have expressed an interest in setting up a peer mentorship program, but Kent’s afraid that may be outside the scope of the Next Steps project. “That’s a really big task, to train youth to feel confident to mentor other youth, or to be a support for other youth,” he said. Option B is to start a YouTube channel with videos directing youth with specific problems to other resources where they can find help. There’s also a snowboard program in the works for kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn. YAN is currently looking for equipment donations for the program, and is hoping to get the kids season passes to the ski hill. For the past two years, YAN has also been running a parkour program, but it’s still uncertain whether or not that program will continue. The program was being taught by youth who have now turned 18. Two have left town
The Rossland Youth Action Network holds frequent planning meetings with Rossland’s youth to ensure that its programming reflects what they want. The Rossland Youth Action Network has been running a parkour program for the past two years. Photos provided by YAN and one is currently injured, so whether or not the program continues depends on whether or not it can find a new instructor. Funding and planning YAN’s core funding comes from the Co-
lumbia Basin Trust (CBT) Community-directed Youth Funds, a program that “increases local activities, opportunities and/or services for youth ages 12 to 19.” The 3D printing project was supported by a CBT Youth Action Grant, which some of the kids from YAN applied for with support from Kent. The project also received $1000 from the Nelson and District Credit Union to help build the scanner. To date, YAN has received about $80,000 in grants on top of its core funding. YAN’s tagline is “youth directed, community supported,” and to make sure that its programming reflects what youth in the community want, the organization holds planning meetings with kids from Rossland. “Throughout the year — we usually have probably five or six a year — we have meetings where we get youth to come and talk about the programming that we’re doing, and what other things they would like to see,” said Kent. “So two weeks after I started in September, 2013 we had 35 kids come, and they gave us ideas and we prioritized them.” This year YAN will also partner with Rossland Summit School and Seven Summits to hold planning meetings in classrooms. That way youth that haven’t previously participated will be encouraged to speak up and get involved. “Right now we have a core group of kids that show up all the time ... , so we’re hearing from a lot of the same youth,” said Kent, “so we want to really be creative in how we’re going to get input from a broader range of youth as we’re going into our third year.”

on Nov. 28 at Mary Hall and feature a delicious three-course meal prepared by the Professional Cook Program students and served by the Resort & Hotel Management Program students. The black tie event features entertainment by students in the Contemporary Music & Technology Program and this year’s class will be joined on stage by Selkirk College alumna Kiesza. “We’re thrilled to have Kiesza coming back to join us on this special evening,” says music program instructor Gilles Parenteau. “It wasn’t too long ago that she was a student in our classrooms and performance spaces. It’s going to bring a special touch to what is always a great evening of fine food, community building and music.” Kiesza arrived to Selkirk College from Calgary as an 18-yearold bursting with talent. Honing her craft in the studios at Nelson’s
Tenth Street Campus, she graduated in 2009 and continued her music studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2014, Kiesza arrived on the international stage with her hit song “Hideway” which featured an incredible video that has more than 250 million views on YouTube. Over the last two years, Kiesza has released a full-length album, captured three Juno Awards, toured the world and collaborated with some of the world’s biggest stars like Rhianna. She recently took part in a concert for the David Foster Foundation in Toronto where she performed alongside Stevie Wonder. Kiesza is taking time out to stop into Nelson to reconnect with her former instructors and will be giving a workshop for current students. She will perform a set at Gala 2015 on Saturday evening and take part in a Sunday afternoon meetand-greet with fans of all ages.
Kiesza performing on Good Morning America. “This is a great opportunity to have a former student come back to a program which helped her achieve her musical goals,” says Parenteau, who corresponds with his former student on a regular basis and this past summer performed with her live in New York City on Good Morning America. “It’s also going to be pretty cool to see current students perform with her on the Gala stage.” Money raised at the
Sunday meet-and-greet will go towards a special bursary being established in Kiesza’s name. It will be a way to recognize the former student and her accomplishments in the music industry. “We are proud of every one of our graduates,” says Selkirk College Donor & Alumni Coordinator Joleen Kinakin. “A bursary like this will help future students achieve their goals and perhaps provide a little inspiration along the way.” The theme of Gala 2015 is Created By Community which is a nod to all the people who have helped make Selkirk College a vital part of postsecondary education in the West KootenayBoundary for almost 50 years. Guests at the gala will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, the three-course meal, a silent auction and live music. Tickets for the event are $70 or $520 for a table of eight. Tickets can be reserved by emailing events@selkirk.ca or calling 250-365-1360.

A cold battle The J. L. Crowe Hawks boys senior soccer team battled cold and persistent rain on Friday, as well as a tough team from David Thompson Secondary School from Invermere in the qualifying final for the AA Secondary School BC soccer championship at the Crowe field in Trail. Crowe defeated L. V. Rogers from Nelson, 1-0, in their first match and came oh-so-close to a berth in the provincial soccer championship, but lost in the regional final 2-0 to David Thompson. jazz albums of the year by the listeners of the influential Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio Worldwide. Since then, the soul-jazz innovator has established herself as one of the most alluring and imaginative artists on the scene today. Shepherd will be in Nelson on Nov. 16 where she will be giving a pair of clinics for students in the Selkirk College Contemporary Music & Technology Program and in the evening take the stage at the venue on Tenth Street Campus. “Having Elizabeth come to connect and pass on her knowledge to students is tremendous,” says music program instructor Laura Landsberg. “We’re very pleased to have her then kick off a tour of British Columbia in Nelson. This is a great opportunity for all music lovers to see her in the intimate setting of the Shambhala Music & Performance Hall.” Shepherd has been
hailed as “a jazz virtuoso blessed with a pop sensibility.” She has been praised by critics worldwide for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery. The four-time Juno Award nominee and two-time Polaris long list artist is fresh off the heels of headlining tours in Mexico and Eastern Canada. She will be performing songs from her acclaimed new album The Signal, which features contributions from Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock). Joining Shepherd on her tour of British Columbia is guitar wizard and long-time collaborator, Michael Occhipinti. Scott Kemp on bass, John Day on trumpet, and local favourite Tony Ferraro on drums. For the Nelson performance, secondyear Selkirk College vocal major students will join Shepherd on stage. “It will be quite a thrill for our voice students to be on the stage

News
Nelson police officer gets house arrest A Nelson police officer convicted of assault won’t serve jail time, but will spend 30 days under house arrest and be placed on a year’s probation. Cst. Drew Turner was convicted in September of assaulting Tawny Campbell while off duty in September 2014 and coming to the assistance of a fellow officer. Turner punched Campbell in the face, knocking her unconscious.
Crown counsel was seeking a 14 to 30 jail sentence followed by probation while the defence sought a discharge. Judge Richard Hewson was presented with a number of character references. Turner also wrote a letter of apology to Campbell. “Police officers are the visible representation of the rule of law in the community,” he said. “When a police officer breaches the public trust and engages in
an illegal activity, even if it is off duty, it undermines the public confidence in the police and rule of law.” It’s unknown, however, whether Turner will keep his job. That decision is up to Nelson’s police chief but isn’t expected to be made until a separate investigation by the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner concludes.
