If more volunteers don’t step forward the Boundary Emergency Transitional Housing Society (BETHS) shelter on Riverside Drive could face troubles down the road. Although the shelter received funding once again from B.C. Housing to operate seven extreme weather shelter spaces, Steve McGibbon, shelter coordinator, said they are low on much needed volunteers. The shelter opened this year on Nov. 1 and is scheduled to remain open each evening from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. until March 31. BETHS shares the building on Riverside with Whispers of Hope Community Kitchen and Thrift Store. “We’ve had between four and seven people each night (so far),” said McGibbon. “I expect it to really pick up when the real (cold) weather hits.” Throughout British Columbia, close to 1,200 temporary emergency shelter spaces will be available in about 100 communities. “Severe cold snaps can be deadly
and it is essential that vulnerable people have a warm shelter,” said Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson. “We want to ensure a safe, secure place to stay is available this winter for people who have no other housing options.” McGibbon said the shelter relies on the funding from B.C. Housing to operate but they also need volunteers. “We actually had 750 bed nights last year,” he said. “They only fund us for seven a night.” He said they also get some smaller funding from private donations as well as the Legion. The City of Grand Forks offers the property for lease at $1 per year. The shelter relies on having one paid staff member and one volunteer each night. They must have two persons at the shelter while it operates according to Grant’s Law. “Last year we had a pool of 16 volunteers, this year we have seven,” said McGibbon. “So we are struggling in that area. If we don’t have a volunteer available we have to bring in another paid and that’s what starts crunching our budget.”
Steve McGibbon, shelter coordinator, sits on one of the beds at the Boundary Emergency and Transition Housing Society (BETHS) shelter. The shelter is facing real financial hardships if more volunteers don’t step forward. Craig Lindsay photo

McGibbon is hoping more volunteers come on board so that they can stop paying for double nights. “We’re just going a month at a time,” he said. “We’ll be okay for November but then come December/January we’ll start to get in trouble funding-wise.” Anyone interested in volunteering can call McGibbon at 250-4439236 for information.

Despite having to overcome some serious obstacles, a Grand Forks resident placed third recently at the Canadian Food Championships in Edmonton. For Neil Krog, a city councillor and owner/chef of Twisted Forks Catering, it was his first time at the Canadians, which took place on July 22-25 and was televised live on CityTV. Krog finished third in the sandwich category despite slicing the tip of his pinky the day before while prepping for another category. “My goal going in was to not finish last because that’s bad,” said Krog. “I wanted to make the
top five. I thought I could make the top five. I ended up in third, which got me in the finals and I was hoping to move up. The top two got to go to the World Championships. I guess I was Miss Runner-up. If the top two couldn’t go, that entry would pass to me but they both went.” Krog said the event was exciting and he was thrilled to be a part of it. “It was cool,” he said. “I was nervous but it was good.” Although it was Krog’s first time at the Canadian Championships, he has had plenty of experience competing in barbecue competitions in the United States. In fact, that’s how he heard about the Canadian one, from a Ameri• See KROG page 8

1910 The new Methodist church at Phoenix was dedicated by special morning and evening services, conducted by Rev. James Calbert of Grand Forks. 1915 Arrangements were completed for the establishment of a vegetable evaporating plant in Grand Forks by Graham and Company of Belleville, Ontario. It would operate day and night, employing some 50 people. 1920 L.P. Macdonald resigned his job as high school teacher. 1935 The Gyro Club and the fire department have constructed a toboggan slide at the city park for youngsters. 1940 The school board strenuously objected to the manner in which trees in front of school property were cut by the city for the purpose of installing street lights. 1945 R.K. Bradley was named the musical director in the re-organization meeting of the Grand Forks Citizens Band. W.M. Liddicoat was elected president. 1950 Pete Tjebbes of Broadacres wins the Potato King Award for the second time in three years. 1955 Fred Downey died at 83. He was a resident of Grand Forks since 1899, and started operation of the Empress movie theatre in 1917, and was one of the original members of the IOOF Hall in 1925. He served two years as alderman and as police commissioner. 1960 Ald. K.A. Honholt will be seeking his fourth term in the coming civic election.
Ald. J.B. MacDonald will be trying for his third. 1970 Almost 100 Kinsmen, Kinettes and guests got together for a dance last weekend as part of their fall zone convention which was held in the city. 1975 Legal action taken by the city of Grand Forks in connection with the attempt to obtain higher royalty payments for the sale of slag, got under way in B.C. Supreme Court at Vancouver last week. 1980 Holy Trinity was well filled last Sunday for the installation of the Rev. R.L. Jacobs as priest in charge of Holy Trinity-Boundary Mission by the Right Reverend Fraser Berry, Bishop of Kootenay, with the Rev. Bastedo acting Bishop’s Chaplain and the Rev. Waller, both of Kelowna. 1995 Cherie Chursinoff has been elected as city councilor in a byelection. Chursinoff won with 42.3 per cent of votes cast. 2000 It took more than 50 years but local resident Garry Hunt finally got his medal for helping a Romania army troop avoid being slaughtered during the Second World War. He got a package in the mail on Nov. 1 and inside was the army medal known as the Virture Militara. 2005 A book presentation was made at the Boundary Museum, coinciding with the conclusion of an exhibit honouring the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers and local veterans. Pictured for the occasion were former Rangers George Swanson and Hugh Sutherland.

2010 With some of the infrastructure in Grand Forks aging at risk of failure, council is looking at options for replacement and repair. Engineering consulting firm Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. compiled a report to help establish a plan for upgrading—according to the report, the water system would require the most money with an estimated $14.7 million price tag during the 10-year plan. The report also identified $10 million for road system upgrades.

East Germany opens Berlin Wall East German officials opened the Berlin Wall, allowing travel from East to West Berlin. The following day, celebrating Germans began to tear the wall down. One of the ugliest and most infamous symbols of the Cold War was soon reduced to rubble that was quickly snatched up by souvenir hunters. The East German action followed a decision by Hungarian officials a few weeks earlier to open the border between Hungary and Austria. This effectively ended the purpose of the Berlin Wall, since East German citizens could now circumvent it by going through Hungary, into Austria, and thence into West Germany. The decision to open the wall was also a reflection of the immense political changes taking place in East Germany, where the old communist leadership was rapidly losing power and the populace was demanding free elections. www.history.com

Granby Road closed during the day CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Granby Road from 3 kilometre to 3.7 kilometre (old dam site) continues to be closed for blasting. Doing the work is Emcon Services in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation. The road is closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. until Nov. 20. “We’re drilling and blasting to gain some extra width through one of the narrow sections there,” said Ken Lawson, Emcon division manager for Kootenay Boundary.

The first night, the bear got into the back seat and tore it apart. The following night the bear tried to get through a hole near the gas tank and then through the front side passenger door but was never able to get to the apples. Nickson said insurance would not pay to fix his vehicle since he did not have comprehensive coverage.

said the city would need to replace the pole but power would be restored shortly. “The power was out for approximately 30 minutes and affected approximately 310 customers including businesses and residential,” said Dave Reid, manager of operations for the City of Grand Forks.
Work on the road began Nov. 2. Lawson said the blasting and clean up is expected to be completed on Nov. 20. “We’ll have to assess the road surface after that for what damage or repairs are required,” said Lawson. “It could be a little longer after that but we don’t foresee that.” Lawson said they are allowing school buses to go through but no one else during the posted times. “We stop and let the school buses through but no one else because it’s just too much interruption,” he said.
Public library wants input from the public CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
The Grand Forks and District Public Library wants to hear from you about what you want and need from the library. To that end they are putting out a survey, which is available online at fluidsurveys.com/s/gfpl as well as on paper at the library. “We are closing in on the end of our of our previous strategic plan and so we need to create a new plan to help guide us through the next five years,” said library director Cari Lynn Postnikoff. “This survey will give us an idea of what the community’s expectations of the public library are. We need to get a handle on what the community actually wants and needs from us, or else what are we doing here?” If the idea of helping out your local library isn’t enough incentive, they are also drawing for two $25 gift certificates from Jogas Espresso Cafe and Thistle Pot Gifts. Postnikoff said this type of survey is new to Grand Forks. While in Cranbrook, she conducted a similar survey and she said the staff, board and director there all found it to be very valuable information to help guide policy and practice. Postnikoff, who started as library director in Grand Forks a few months ago, said the library in Grand Forks is one of the central hubs for the community offering much more than just books. “Our library is always bustling,” she said. “Grand Forks and District Public
Library is one of the busiest public libraries I have ever seen, and I’ve been to more than a few. “People are coming into the library for all sorts of reasons. The public access computers are always very busy and our children’s area is usually pretty giggly.” She says that the staff their answer more than 1,500 reference questions and check out 5,000-7,000 items every month. Postnikoff said that despite the proliferation of the Internet, iPad style tablets and other ebook readers, books don’t appear to be going anywhere. “People are definitely still reading books,” she said. “It’s actually been reported that sales of print books are gaining ground again so it looks like the ‘paper book or ebook?’ battle has been decided (although if you’re a diehard ereader, you can still get ebooks from us!).” There are many new changes coming to the library in the coming months. One that is most exciting to staff is the new lighting. “When the contractors came in with a light meter, we discovered that our current lighting is best suited for a ‘romantic dinner’ which is not exactly what you want in a reading area,” said Postnikoff. The library will be closed on Nov. 10, 17 and 18 for the renovations. “Before we open again, we will also have a brand new biography section, as that is one of our most requested non-fiction genres.”

Volunteering at shelter a rewarding experience Once again, the Boundary Emergency Shelter (BETHS) is struggling to stay open. After having 16 volunteers in their stable last year, for whatever reason that number is down to seven. BETHS relies on volunteers to man the building when the shelter is open along with a paid staff member. Although volunteer work can seem thankless, the rewards go far beyond the tangible rewards. Without volunteers, most youth sports, both in the schools and in the community, would probably cease to function; many organizations in town would also struggle to keep afloat. By helping out at the shelter you give a person a chance at having a warm, safe bed. Without BETHS many of the clients would end up on the streets and, particularly when the weather gets colder, it’s a very dangerous and unhealthy situation. In addition to a warm bed, BETHS also offers a chance to have a warm shower and have clean clothes. The staff also works closely with Whispers of Hope and other organizations to provide meals and other treats that can help put a person back on their feet.

Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE I’m bombarded with news at work. When I get home I usually watch the 6 o’clock news on Global, and I often fall asleep with The National telling me even more news of the day. When a commercial comes on a fictional TV show I’m watching, I often channel-surf to CNN. It really is best if I watch a show I’ve PVRed—I’ll forget the news for at least 40 minutes (we all know that’s all an hour-long show really is, right?). Watching too much news and current affairs has actually been shown to have a depressing effect. I’m sure there’s thousands of studies out there that I could reference, but I don’t think any-
one disputes this statement. I love comedy—not so much slapstick movies, but stand-up comedy and the late-night talk shows featuring the likes of Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon; Jon Stewart, too, of course, before he left The Daily Show. I admit watching late-night talk shows isn’t completely getting away from the news. Colbert is especially good at political commentary thinly (very thinly) disguised as humour. But with a U.S. Republican nomination race featuring the likes of Donald Trump in the lead of a herd-full of candidates, how can a comedian ignore the news? Stand-up comedy is sometimes about current events, but often about everyday life. Jeff Foxworthy’s “You might be a redneck if…” schtick is a great example. “You might be a redneck if you spend 40 hours a week at Wal-Mart, but don’t work there”;
or, “your financial planner told you to buy lottery tickets; and “your primary source of income is a pool stick.” Many comedy fans still remember Mitch Hedberg even though he passed away 10 years ago now. His comedy typically featured short, sometimes one-line jokes mixed with absurd elements. (“Rice is great if you’re really hungry and want to eat two thousand of something.”) John Pinette, who is also no longer with us, told clean jokes that were incredibly funny—he showed us that nobody needs to swear to get a laugh. (“I have gotten a trainer. I went to the gym and I saw him and he said ‘Give me a sit up,’ and I said ‘Oh nay, nay.’ I go ‘I don’t do ups: sit ups, push ups, pull ups. I do do downs. I will sit down, I will lay down. Give me a cheeseburger, I’ll wolf that down. But no ups.’”) I hope that made you laugh,

because everyone needs a bit of humour in their lives. That’s why I’ve promised myself that one day I will go to the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal. Tip to employers: I think that the best bonus a workplace could give is a gift of humour—a book of jokes, tickets to a comedy playing at the GEM, two tickets to the Just For Laughs festival…. (yes, that suggestion did get me a laugh!) I’ve mentioned before that last year an old college friend, Rita, and I reconnected and went on a trip. We first talked about it after I said I wanted to go to Montreal. We started checking festival dates, time off work, prices…and Rita remarked that it was just as cheap to fly overseas than it was to Montreal in August. So we went to Italy and France. Oh well. One day I will get to go to Just For Laughs, I reckon.

Vehicles collide at corner
Riverfront access from park revealed
A secluded strip of Crown riverfront land along the Kettle River a little over three kilometres east of Gilpin Creek has been one of the best-kept secrets in Boundary Country for many years, but it is no longer a secret. An in-depth search done by a resident of Grand Forks has revealed that a privately owned Rousing 6.44-hectare (15.92-acre) parcel adjacent to the the Rabble Trans Canada Trail (TCT) does not extend to the high water mark along the Kettle River. In fact, ROY RONAGHAN it was found that a portion of the former 594 ha (1,470-acre) Boothman Ranch purchased by the Social Credit government in August 1972 surrounds the private property. The riverfront parcel is now part of the 788-hectare (1,970-acre) Gilpin Grasslands Provincial Park, a Class A park created by BC Parks in May 2007. Access to the Kettle River from the TCT was denied for years because signs erected by the landowner suggested that the private property extends from the Trans Canada Trail to the river. New signage will correct the misconception. Maps obtained from the Land Titles Office in Kamloops indicate that W. Humphreys BCLS surveyed the parcel in April 1942 for the Columbia and Western Railway Company. It is approximately 1.5 kilometres long, 65 metres wide at its widest point and 25 metres wide at its narrowest and covers an area of about six hectares (15 acres). The land was surveyed in 1942 to deliberately enable easy access from its extreme eastern and western ends from the large Boothman property. The access points are not signed and the boundary between the park and private land is not marked. The parcel is important because it provides a rest stop for kayakers or an entry point for anglers and picnickers but there are no signs to indicate that the area is open to the public. According to a Management Direction Statement for the Gilpin Grasslands Provincial Park published in September 2009, “The park has significant grassland and wildlife values, including several provincially at risk grassland ecological communities containing numerous provincially red-and blue-listed plant and animal species. Approximately four kilometres of the park’s southern boundary include riparian frontage along the Kettle River.” A Management Direction Statement published in 2007 states that people from the Sinixt and Okanagan nations frequented the Gilpin Grasslands park area at one time. There are five known archeological sites within the park boundary. These sites are associated with debris or waste from past human activity such as tool or weapon making. There are also depressions that could represent the locations of storage pits or partially buried shelter lodges. It is easy to imagine that the riverfront area was a stopping place for First Nations people as they travelled though the area. There is also evidence that explorers, traders and early settlers passed through the area occupied by the park. The construction of Highway 3 obliterated most of the Dewdney Trail but remnants of it can still be found in the park. At one time, R.R. Gilpin (1861-1953) lived on the parkland. He built a ranch house adjacent to Gilpin Creek and operated a customs office for travellers coming from the United States. Only remnants of the house remain but the customs office now stands on the grounds of gallery 2, the former courthouse in Grand Forks. It was restored by the Grand Forks Rotary Club several years ago. Residents and visitors are fortunate to have the Gilpin Grasslands Park nearby and that its riverfront portion has been identified for their enjoyment. Though cows can now be found in the park during the fall of each year, it is the fond hope of a growing number of residents that government regulations with regard to grazing on the grasslands will change and the land will revert to being habitat for the ungulates that once roamed the grassy slopes in large numbers.

On Nov. 7 at 3:25 p.m., police observed a male on Central Avenue who was known to have a warrant for his arrest. “The police stopped the male and advised him
that he was under arrest for the outstanding warrant,” said Lanz. “The male was being uncooperative and refused to abide by the police direction.” Lanz said a small struggle ensued before the male was taken into custody. “Additional charges of obstructing a police officer, possession of marijuana and failure to comply with a probation order are being recommended,” he added. The suspect is a 33-yearold male from Grand Forks. Citizens on Patrol
Lanz would like to remind all residents that there is a Citizens on Patrol (COP) in Grand Forks. “They go out in the community and volunteer to be another set of eyes for us,” he said. Anyone wanting to join COP can go to the Grand Forks RCMP Station at 1608 Central Ave. for more information. “We train them on what to look for,” he said. “They’re never alone, they’re always with someone.”

Conservation officers recognized for service SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
The province has proclaiming Nov. 4 as the first-ever Conservation Officer Day in recognition of the important work done by B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service (COS) to protect the environment and ensure both human and wildlife safety. This year also marks the 110th anniversary of the COS. From its humble beginnings in 1905 when officers were mostly volunteers and referred to as game wardens to today’s highly skilled and trained natural law enforcement agency, the core values of the COS have been a part of B.C.’s fabric for over a century. Today’s COS is a dynamic and evolving compliance and enforcement organization.
Conservation officers work throughout the province on investigations and enforcement, responding to human/ wildlife conflicts, delivering outreach services and engaging with the public. With advances in technology and enhanced equipment, officers are spending more time in the field with increased mobility and responsiveness. Conservation officers often go above and beyond their regular duties, and 11 officers were recognized at a ceremony in Victoria today for their outstanding dedication and service to British Columbians and the environment. Those being recognized are: Jason Hawkes – Chief’s Commendation for Lifesaving
Andrew Anaka – Chief’s Commendation for Lifesaving Micah Kneller – Chief’s Commendation – Exemplary Service Josh Lockwood – Award of Merit Kevin Van Damme – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal Steve Jacobi – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal Darrell Ashworth – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal Brad Lacey – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal Dave Webster – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal Paul McFadden – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal Martin Melderis – Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal

been at the World Food Championships. The only way to get from Canada to the Worlds was through the Canadian Food Championships and so Krog went about seeing if he could qualify. “I was watching Anthony, he was in sandwich (category) at the Worlds on TV there,” said Krog. “I talked to him later a bit and found out that there is a Canadian one. What they’re doing is taking the six categories and getting the top two to go to Worlds as Team Canada. I just wanted to tell people I was part of Team Canada. That’s how I heard about it.” Although he fell one spot short of qualifying for the Worlds, Krog was pleased with how things went. He said it was a lot different experience from the barbecue events. Krog competed in two categories: pasta and sandwich. The other four categories were seafood, burger, dessert and bacon (yes, bacon has its own category). There were 20 contestants in each category, and they came from across Canada. Krog was one of only three from B.C. who competed in the event, which was held in downtown Edmonton at the same time as a Taste of Edmonton food festival. “A lot of the competitors were executive chefs from restaurants across Canada,” he said. For the Canadian Championships, each chef had exactly one hour from start to finish for each item. Chefs had to supply their own food and
supplies. Once complete, the competitors brought their finished dish in front of the judges to sample and vote on. Krog said just getting to Edmonton was troublesome because he worried about getting through security at the airport. “My bag looked interesting going through security because it’s all full on knives and rolling pins,” he said. “Fortunately, it wasn’t carry on so I was okay. I did have spices and I though they would freak out. They looked strange but they weren’t liquid so it was fine.” For his opening round sandwich, Krog went with a cedar plank salmon with a lemon caper aioli on a bed of mixed crab. “I took third so I moved on,” he said. In the sandwich final round, Krog said the top five had to use a “secret” ingredient, which turned out to be cream soda. “How the heck do you make cream soda?” he said. “We all had to include it into our dish, which was weird. I cooked onions infused with cream soda. I also used blackberries, becuase I thought that might go with it, and some candied bacon. I added some brie cheese and old cheddar and made a triple stack grilled cheese.” Krog ended up third once again for his final round sandwich and didn’t qualify for the worlds. It was still an impressive result considering he chopped off part of his little finger the day before during the first round of the pasta category. “I didn’t get the golden ticket to the Worlds,” he said.

Neil Krog finished third in the sandwich category at the Canadian Food Championships despite having to overcome several tough obstacles. Craig Lindsay photo
“I missed it by a point.” Krog said another obstacle was that he couldn’t find any fresh produce or fish in downtown Edmonton where he shopped. He ended up taking several hours going out to a CostCo on the outskirts of town by cab. He also slammed the trunk door of the cab on his head and had a big bruise. If you watch the video you can see Krog clowning in front of the camera in his trademark style although that would bite him in the behind. “Buddy with the camera is coming in and I say, ‘wanna see some cool knife work?’ and I’m going really fast cutting peppers and I cut the tip of my little finger off.” Krog tried to keep going but was bleeding profusely. He ended up leaving the cooking area and running down the street. He managed to get some bandages and gloves from the St. John’s Ambulance tent and was able to slow down the bleeding and continue. “I came back but I Krog shows off the medals and trophies he has won at barbecue compe- lost five minutes and titions throughout the U.S. on his custom smoker. Submitted photo that just killed it,” he
said. “I had planned to make a pasta version of a bloody caesar. I was still making my sauce but when it came down to plate my beautiful idea—they were at 48, 47, 46 seconds left. I just grabbed it with my good hand. It just looked horrible.” Krog ended up being the last competitor to finish with about a second left. He did find out that he finished 15th in the first pasta round, “so at least I wasn’t dead last,” he said. “So that was sweet.” Krog said overall it was a great experience and he is already planning to return next year and improve on his scores. “It was fun,” he said. “I would have loved to have gotten at least second. It was much more spur of the moment because some food items just weren’t available. As soon as I finished, I wanted to do it again. I wanted to go back and made it better. I’m planning on going back for 2016 and go to Worlds. Next time I’m not going to be an ass and show off for the camera.” You can see the Canadian Food Championships broadcast online on YouTube. Krog appears in episode two (at around the 2:30 mark), episode five (3:15) and episode seven (1:08).

Lunch features USCC borshch
GEM Theatre, Grand Forks, BC Adults: $15.00 • Youth: $10.00 (12 & under)
Enjoying authentic borshch at the USCC Community Centre prepared by the USCC ladies organization are (clockwise from left) Dave Dittrich, Katelyn Teskey, Bonny Dittrich, Cecil and Anne Plotnikoff and Doris Feichtinger. The annual event also included fresh bread and plenty of pie.
Craig Lindsay photo
The origins of the USCC ladies organization date back to 1960 when Anna Markova (daughter of Doukhobor leader Peter V. Verigin) brought together ladies from different areas to learn from each other. The ladies organization was formed shortly after and continues to get together to help raise funds through events such as blanket sales, raffles, bake sales and, of course, the borshch feed. the Grand Forks Ladies Organization consists of a group of women mainly of Doukhobor background and incldues both members and non-members of the USCC.

“Mom, they don’t murder girls” ▾ MYTH: Girls and women aren’t allowed to join gangs: Reality: Girls are joining gangs across Canada and there are many documented reports of them being extremely violent. Girls are often used to hold and/or transport drugs and/or guns because the girls and the gangsters don’t think that the police will stop the girl…they are wrong.

All eyes were on the runway when models showed off clothing from several businesses, at the benefit fashion show held Saturday in Greenwood. The fundraiser, hosted by Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC, featured the fashion show (produced by Heather Smith of the Yellow Door Boutique), a large silent auction, appetizers and beverages. Peri Best (photo below) lost her home in the Rock Creek fire but was graciously on hand to provide music, accompanied by Vivien Browne, Carole Young and Jim Ruho. (Best was overwhelmed at the gift of a guitar, which she was pleased to play for the audience.) Proceeds from the show (unknown as of press time) go towards rebuilding a home lost in the Rock Creek fire. Della Mallette photos

Bird’s Eye author to speak at library SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
The author of a new wartime novel called Bird’s Eye View will present a highly entertaining talk and slide show of vintage photographs at the Grand Forks and District Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19. Bird’s Eye View is the only novel ever written featuring a Canadian woman in uniform as the main character. It tells the story of Rose Jolliffe, a young woman from Saskatchewan whose home town becomes an air training base. Fired with patriotism, she joins the Royal Canadian Air Force herself, one of 50,000 Canadian women who enlisted to support the fighting men. Rose travels overseas and becomes an interpreter of aerial photographs, spying on the enemy from the sky, searching out camouflaged bomb targets on the continent. Author Elinor Florence of Invermere, B.C. grew up on a former wartime airfield near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, worked for newspapers in all four western provinces, and was a regular contributor to Reader’s Digest for

eight years. She also owned and published the Columbia Valley Pioneer newspaper in Invermere. Elinor will present a personal account of how she became interested in wartime history, the contribution made by Canadian women, and some of the amazing discoveries made by the aerial photographic interpreters. Her one-hour presentation, sponsored by the Kootenay Library Federation, is suitable for men, women and older children. It is of particular interest to veterans and their families, history buffs, and anyone who enjoys a heartwarming Canadian story. Following her presentation, the author will answer questions and sign copies of her book. Feel free to wear your wartime vintage duds—Elinor will be in costume! Bird’s Eye View is published by Dundurn Press of Toronto. It’s available from any bookstore, and as an e-book. Copies will also be available for purchase at the event. For more information, visit Florence’s website at www.elinorflorence.com or call the library at 250-442-3944.

LORRAINE GORDON Submitted to the Gazette
Dragons and Dinosaurs is the first book in a series written by Tim Martin, a former RCMP officer who retired with his family to Grand Forks. The genre is fantasy, adventure and science fiction for young adults. The protagonist of Dragons and Dinosaurs is an ex-marine named Jim, a police officer in a small town in Northern Washington. Divorced and a confirmed loner, Jim works the night shift by choice. He has no expectations of his life to be anything other than uneventful, and even humdrum. His boss, the chief, sends Jim out one night to find out just what is killing and mutilating livestock in the area. He drives out to investigate, going too fast on the logging roads, and crashes. When he wakes up, he finds himself off road in a strange looking countryside, where he can’t even identify the trees. Nothing works in his car, including the radio. Here is where the reader must suspend disbelief, and enjoy Jim’s adventure of a lifetime. Jim has hit what looks like

a type of dinosaur, extinct of course, known as a raptor. Since his camera doesn’t work, Jim removes a tooth and some claws for evidence, because he knows his boss will never believe him otherwise. He doesn’t yet realize he isn’t even in the same world anymore. The people and creatures Jim encounters in this new world with two moons are in danger of becoming enslaved under the tyranny of an evil wizard. Jim learns to communicate with great dragons, is trained to control the magical abilities he mysteriously discovers, and often thinks he must be in a coma in a hospital bed somewhere. If you liked the dwarves, orcs, elves, wizards and ogres of Lord of the Rings, you’ll love the dragons, dinosaurs, yetis and more in Dragons and Dinosaurs, the New World. Written in first person narrative, the author’s wit emerges throughout the book in his inner dialogue, which makes for quite an enjoyable read. Bruins knock off top-ranked BV CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
It was a spectacular weekend for the Grand Forks Border Bruins as they won both games including beating Beaver Valley on the road. On Friday, the Bruins hosted the Princeton Posse at Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. GF drew first blood with Jordan Robertson scoring at 15:35 assisted by Connor Manegre. The Posse tied the game up at 7:53 of the first with a power play goal from Rylan Douglas. After that it was all Grand Forks as the home team scored three unanswered goals (Graeme Close, Dylan Haney and Robertson with his second) to win 4-1. Goalie Anthony Galliart picked the Bruins’ game star with a solid performance between the pipes stopping 29 of 30 Princeton shots. On Saturday the Bruins travelled to Fruitvale to play the division-leading Beaver Valley Nitehawks. After a slow start that saw the Bruins go down by two in the second period it was all GF. The Bruins didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 18:13 mark of the first period when Bryson Yee (assist from Trey Mason) made it 2-1. A couple of minutes later Garret Brisebois tied the score with a power play marker assisted by Logan

Bruins head coach and general manager Emery Olauson (left) and assistant coach/director of marketing Britt Ouellette spoke at the Rotary Club’s breakfast meeting on Nov. 5. Olauson talked about moving to the area with his young family and how welcoming the community is. He also talked about the challenges involved in rebuilding a team which hasn’t made the playoffs in 22 years. Craig Lindsay photo
Olauson said he’s not surprised at the strong play of Galliart. “Our improved team play has really helped him too,” said Olauson. “He’s a good goaltender and if he sees the puck, he’s going to stop it. We’re really happy with our defensive play and our goaltending we feel has been a strength of ours all season. Now the numbers are starting to show that.” Grand Forks now has a record of 8-wins, 11-losses and 2-overtime losses, good for 18 points overall and fourth place in the Neil Murdoch Division. The Nitehawks lead the division with 14wins, 4-losses and 1-tie for 29 points. Bear Bites – The Bruin players were out in force on Halloween night helping the Grand Forks Rotary Club with security at the bonfire.

B.C. Parks draw record numbers British Columbia’s world-renowned provincial park system continues to attract global attention, with visitors from outside B.C. making up more than one-quarter of a record number of camping reservations in 2015. The latest numbers show visitors from across Canada, the U.S. and abroad account for more than 25 per cent of the 159,000 camping reservations made in 2015. This new, all-time record for the number of reservations made for provincial campgrounds continues a growing upward trend. More than
24,000 additional reservations were made this year compared to 2014, a 19 per cent increase. This was on top of a 13 per cent increase from 2013. Visitors this year have hailed from a dozen different countries, including the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Austria, Spain, France, the U.K. and Australia. Ruth Llewellyn Ruth Llewellyn (Wilson), born Nov. 11, 1918 passed away peacefully at Hardy View Lodge Oct. 30, 2015. Just 12 days short of her 97th birthday, she had a full life, born in South Shields England, she attended college and thereafter taught primary school for 45 years, both in England and after immigrating to Canada in 1949. She settled in Victoria, B.C. where she met Ian Llewellyn and married, they lived in many communities across Canada as Ian was Air Force. They eventually settled in the Vancouver area most of their lives. Retiring at age 63 years, they moved to Grand Forks in the mid 90’s following their one son Rick. Ruth’s interests beyond teaching were in the arts and travel, especially Greece. Never one to sit still she was very active in volunteer work after retirement. She is survived by their one son Rick (Vickie) of Grand Forks. Having lived a long and healthy life she has been predeceased by her parents, her brother (Richie), husband (Ian ), grandson (Clarke) and all her other immediate family. Ruth has requested no service, cremation has taken place and her ashes, by her request will be scattered with other family members. Although she will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved her, we must appreciate how she touched us all and left us better persons for knowing her. The family would like to thank the staff at Boundary Lodge and Auxiliary Lodge (Hardy View) for their kindness and care of Ruth the last two years.

Co-op hires coordinator SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
The Kootenay Co-op is excited to welcome Nadine Harris BenRabha to the role of “true local coordinator,” a new position intended to support Kootenay farmers and boost the local economy. BenRabha comes to the coop from Kootenay Meadows
Farm in Creston, a local supplier of glass-bottled organic milk and cheese. She played a key role in the start-up of her family’s on-farm processing ventures, and has worn many hats throughout the business, including a focus on marketing. She brings this firsthand experience to the role of true local coordinator along with a track record of passionate advocacy

around regional food security. The co-op created the position of true coordinator to help it triple its sales of local products in its new Nelson Commons location. Strengthening local food systems has long been part of the co-op’s mandate. For more information, contact Nadine BenRabha at 250354-4077; or email Nadine@ kootenay.coop.

Your vehicle should be winter ready now
SUBMITTED

Winter is coming. Some are happy to see it and some are not; however, the reality is at some point in the near future we will see snow in the mountains. “The West Kootenay Traffic Services and Nelson Integrated Road Safety Unit want

you to be prepared,” said Sgt. John Ferguson of Traffic Services. “The one main safety issue for travelling is your tires. As of Oct. 1, you must have winter tires on if traversing the mountains. The question is what is a winter tire.” A winter tire is any tire that either has a three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol, OR has the letters M and S with a tread depth of not less then 3.5 mm. It is recommended you go to your local tire store and ask them the best tire for driving conditions in this area. “We want everyone to be safe this winter,” Ferguson said. “Check your tires, slow down in the early mornings as we will start to see black ice. Carry extra safety equipment blankets and food when travelling in the winter. Don’t forget to tell people where you are going.” A very important safety check is your headlights. If your car is manufactured after 1990, you must have daytime running lights. In many vehicles the module burns out and people do not realize it. Please be safe this winter, Ferguson added.

Tuesday Dec. 1 marks World AIDS day—a day to remember those we have lost to HIV/AIDS, those who are living with HIV/AIDS, and those who have been affected. This year, AIDS Network Kootenay Outreach and Support Society (ANKORS) has chosen the theme, “Zero Discrimination” in alignment with the 90-90-90 campaign of the last few years. ANKORS is hosting an event on that day, Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Nelson United Church (602 Silica St.) The event will feature music by Amber Starr, speakers, canglelight vigil to remember those we have lost, a video clip and a panel discussion. Refreshments will be provided. Please join us on this important day and together learn how to get to zero.
