The East Kootenay Chamber of Mines recently brought Minerals South to the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook. The show featured industry innovations, cutting edge technologies, employment opportunities and local experts to discuss what they do and how they do it. (Left picture) Local inventor Mike Hambalak shows a solar and wind powered light stand for use in mining operations. (Centre) Viveke Rasmussen, from the Cranbrook Rock and Lapidary Club displayed her jewelry and interesting, valuable gemstones. (Right) Jordon Aasland shows Sakari Kerr from Gordon Terrace School the proper way to pan for gold.
Letter: Celebrating 110 years of CO Service Every day, conservation officers around British Columbia are working hard to protect the environment and ensure public safety in challenging and often dangerous situations. This year marks a very special milestone - the 110th anniversary of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. The inaugural Conservation Officer Day was proclaimed Nov. 4 in celebration of the anniversary. Eleven conservation officers from around British Columbia received awards in recognition of their bravery, dedication and service. I am extremely proud of the hard work conservation officers throughout the
province do every day, and I know it is not easy. This anniversary is a chance to recognize and honour the dedicated men and women who make up the Conservation Officer Service - who every day go above and beyond their duties. The Conservation Officer Service has grown leaps and bounds since its humble beginnings in 1905, when they were known as game wardens and were mostly volunteers. Today, the service is celebrated as a leader in natural resource law enforcement and human-wildlife conflicts and response. Conservation officers are the unsung heroes of our environment,

tirelessly working to protect and preserve our natural resources, and fish and wildlife for future generations. Yet their stories are seldom heard. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with several conservation officers and hear some of their countless stories of why they love what they do. Many of the conservation officers serving British Columbians got into the role because they are passionate about protecting our pristine wilderness and everything in it. They speak of their love for the variety of the job, of meeting new people, taking in spectacular scenery and of helping to resolve conflicts with animals. They tell stories of relocating bears,
of remote patrols in the backcountry, and of helping teach municipalities the importance of wildlife management. Several conservation officers were inspired by stories from family or friends, including one who grew up around a campfire with his game warden father. Many others fell into the role through their love of the outdoors. “I remember meeting my first conservation officer and knowing then, I would one day wear the uniform,” recalled a young woman who has been on the job for nearly five years. “We are the voice for wild things; wild things for which we love.” The role of a conservation officer is a diverse and demanding one. There is no typical day. Often, the public isn’t aware of the
many different tasks an officer takes on. An officer could relocate a bear, track down a poacher and give a wilderness safety talk to students - all in the same shift. I am proud of the conservation officers we have in our province, who are outside in the sun, rain, snow and sleet doing their best every day. I hold the B.C. Conservation Officer Service in the highest esteem, and know that British Columbians join me in our appreciation of the integrity and values for which they serve the public. I urge you to take a moment to thank your local conservation officer the next time you see them out in your community. ~Mary Polak, Minister of Environment

Letter: Hunter & hunted On October 29th, 2015, my son and I were up the St. Mary’s valley hunting moose on the Meachen Creek road up at Hour Glass trail. We parked our truck and walked up the trail to Meachen Lake, glassing the slides hoping to spot any signs of moose. After about two to three hours up there, we decided to head back to the truck. We could see the truck parked on the entrance to the upper road about 100 feet away when my son, Jeff, heard something in the thick willows behind us. It was panting and breathing hard, and we got a glimpse of a gray/black colour. We were thinking it was a deer, but the next second a large Grey Wolf came flying out of the willows in a
full body length leap. The wolf immediately realized we weren’t prey and you could see his body twisting in the air trying to halt his attack. He landed on the road about 10 to 12 feet from us and was gone. We barely had time to get our guns up, it happened so fast. Sure got our hearts pumping. We talked about this after on the way home and we think the wolf was getting the scent of blood from previous kills from our clothes and boots. This is a lesson learned, for sure. Thankful it wasn’t a bear or cougar. If you smell like a deer you will be hunted. Went home and washed my gear immediately. ~Larry and Jeff Bussey, Kimberley

Pierre Cléroux, of the Business Development Bank of Canada, will be the keynote speaker at the November 17 Cranbrook Chamber luncheon. Pierre Cléroux, Vice President, Research and Chief Economist at Business Development Bank of Canada will be the keynote speaker at the Chamber’s November luncheon on Tuesday, November 17 at the Heritage Inn and Conference Centre. Known as one of the most entertaining and engaging economists in Canada Mr. Cléroux presentation; Overcoming Barriers to Growth: Optimal Strategies for Scaling Your Business will look at winning strategies, commonly used by Canadian entrepreneurs who have successfully grown their business. “We are so fortunate to have someone of his caliber in Cranbrook.”” said Chamber Executive Director David D. Hull. “We had to move off the traditional Wednesday to the Tuesday to work into his schedule as he is in such high demand as a speaker across Canada.” The Chamber has been exerting a demonstrable effort to engage speakers of note and significance to present to the
business community with great success. “The speakers we have had in 2015 and the lineup for early 2016 is really quite remarkable.” said Hull. “We have received extremely positive feedback on the quality of our speakers this year and Mr. Cléroux will certainly not disappoint.” Tickets for this event partner sponsored by Murray’s Office Plus are available on the Chamber website. Cranbrook author releases book
Photo submitted
The Saint and the Soul Slayer is a new book by a Cranbrook author and is available on Apple iBook. by Dorothy McKay Cranbrook has a new published author-- my friend RW Wells. RW’s dark humour mixed with an uncanny talent for delicious metaphors intrigued me from the outset. A former cop in a busy Canadian city, RW often enhanced police reports with

the odd metaphor and simile, much to his superior’s displeasure. After putting down a teenage party brawl, RW and other officers repaired to the station to write their usually boring reports, but RW reported that the crowd dispersed as “little cockroaches scattering before the bright blue and
red lights of the blue clothed, noble champions of the innocent.” His superior officer was not amused. RW also wrote about the deeper, darker things which police officers experience. “Usually when we are alone, we talk about our War Stories,” he said. As a former paramedic, I understand. We have a bond with the police as we see many of the same horrors. Nowadays, Critical Incident Stress debriefings help emergency personnel deal with trauma, but in RW’s day, there was no such help, so all that trauma was stuffed deep inside, building up each day, exacting a terrific emotional and health toll. RW wrote about some of those traumatic situations which we hope regular folks never have to see. His descriptions of events and the dark people he’s come across have given me more than a few nightmares. RW’s friends have
urged him to write about his police adventures for years, and he finally has. Author Luanne Armstrong prepared the last edit of “The Saint & The SoulSlayer” and describes it as “an amazing and beautiful work and far, far beyond what one would expect of a first time author.” “The Saint and the Soul-Slayer” is on Apple’s iBook, and the book cover was created by Cranbrook poet and artist, Astarte.

Besides coordinators, many of the athletes who would like to compete can find travelling to other cities financially daunting. While Zone 7 can give small subsidies to competitors, Boucher noted that the group is looking to spend more time fundraising this year. The goal behind the fundraising is to make it as easy as possible for the athletes involved to represent the zone. 2016 Ford Edge
Overall: The second-generation Ford Edge makes all the right moves, especially in Sport trim. Drivetrain: Four-cylinder and V6 turbo engines plus a non-turbo V6 give you a wide choice of power options; all with six-speed automatic transmissions and available all-wheel-drive. Of the Detroit-based automakers, only Ford is really making a move to smaller engines, and especially so for the 2016 Edge. The sexy wagon arrives with a 245-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the base engine. It can be had with all-wheel-drive and can
muscle up to 1,600 kilograms of trailer weight. Also on board is a twin-turbocharged 325-horsepower 2.7-litre V6 that’s standard in the appropriately named Edge Sport, and optional in the premium Titanium trim level. The Sport’s previous 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 gets the boot. Sandwiched between the two turbo engines is the returning (and now optional) 285-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions with paddle-shift controls. A sport setting lets the engine rev to a higher limit in each gear for more spirited driving. Normal and Sport modes are also part

of the Edge’s adaptive-steering system. It makes it easier to park in a tight spot while being more responsive during high-speed maneuvering. The optional allwheel-drive system can direct up to 100 percent of the torque to either the front or rear axles, as needed. The engine lineup might be the Edge’s major drawing card, but there are additional obvious and unseen changes to report. A hexagonal-shaped grille softens the Edge’s look while the roofline is more swept and the LED taillights are narrower and extend into the liftgate. The body panels are attached to an equally new platform that originated
with the current Ford Fusion and is considerably more resistant to bending and twisting. The passenger space has been designed with more supportive seats, more storage bins and cubbys and an eight-inch touch-screen for the audio, infotainment, navigation and climate controls. The most basic of the Edge’s four trim levels has plenty of comfort content. Beyond that, the list of available safety and technology gear seems almost endless. Among the more intriguing is a 180-degree front camera that scans for unseen cross-traffic at intersections. Then there’s active park assist that will guide the Edge into, as
