74-year-old pedestrian struck at ‘unsafe’ crossing City staff expressed concerns about intersection in 2001 Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
The intersection where a 74-year-old man was struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening, at Trethewey Street and Slocan Drive, has been raising safety flags for the city for over a decade. The man suffered serious injuries after being
hit by a northbound vehicle in the intersection shortly before 7 p.m., and was airlifted to a Vancouver-area hospital. Mayor Henry Braun has told media he’s directing city engineers to examine the safety of the crosswalk, which has white lines painted on the pavement but no warning lights for drivers.
Abbotsford resident Maryna Willms told the News she contacted the city about the crosswalk’s safety back in October, and was told her concern would be passed on to the appropriate department. “I’ve seen too many people almost get hit. It’s pretty bad,” she said. “It’s great they put Continued on A4

A senior was struck earlier this week while crossing Trethewey Street at a marked TYLER OLSEN Abbotsford News crosswalk near Slocan Drive. ume of pedestrian traffic in the area wasn’t high enough to require a crosswalk. They opted to look into what it would take to put in a warning light for drivers – which could cost about $40,000. In 2006, Mammel told the committee that a crosswalk was “warranted” for the intersection, and one was installed, without lights. City spokesperson Katherine Treloar
could not confirm whether this crosswalk’s safety was being re-examined by engineering staff. She said the city applies “a variety of sound engineering practices” when building crosswalks, and the crosswalk was installed in 2006 because a count showed sufficient traffic at the intersection. “Traffic counts are a common method applied to establish the need for a crosswalk at an intersection,” she
added. The driver in Tuesday’s collision remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Officers and collision reconstructionists are continuing the investigation into this incident, and witnesses should call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604859-5225 or text 222973 (abbypd) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.
The laughs are ready to come to Abbotsford. For the first time, Yuk Yuk’s national stand-up comedy club is opening in Abbotsford. The new club, to be located inside the Travelodge Hotel on Pauline Street in downtown Abbotsford, joins locations in Vancouver and Victoria as one of only three clubs in B.C. Currently, Abbotsford residents have to travel to Vancouver, New Westminster or Port Coquitlam to attend a comedy club. Yuk Yuk’s Abbotsford is set to open on Dec. 1 and is hiring for 45 positions during a job fair on Saturday. Interviews will occur from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the Travelodge Hotel. Yuk Yuk’s was founded in 1976 in Toronto, and has 16 locations in six provinces. For more information on the clubs, visit yukyuks.com.

HOMESELLERS:
a crosswalk there, but there should be some lights. It’d be a shame for somebody to lose a family member.” In 2001, a crosswalk was proposed for the intersection at an Abbotsford traffic safety advisory committee meeting, but rejected – partly because a city engineer considered it an unsafe proposition without any lights to warn drivers. “A crosswalk was considered unsafe, primarily because drivers would not have a reasonable expectation that pedestrians would be crossing the road and wold not be used to seeing and stopping for pedestrians,” committee minutes describe a report from city traffic engineer Russ Mammel. “[Mammel] reiterated that crosswalks provide convenience, but not always safety, and that it was not in the public’s best interest to provide a false sense of security,” the minutes continued, also noting that the current vol-
Abbotsford is in the final stages of phasing out discounted water and sewer rates for heavy commercial and industrial users. Local farmers, many of whom rely on city water for their operations, aren’t happy. “That’s a [large] increase in what my members will be paying for water, and certainly they’re not happy with it,” said Linda Delli Santi, the BC Greenhouse Growers Association executive director. “It will be significant to their bottom line.” Those agricultural and industrial businesses that use less than 1,667 cubic metres (about half of an Olympic-size swimming pool) in two months are currently charged 90 per cent of residential rates for water and sewer. If they use more, all additional usage costs 85 per cent of res-
idential rates. With a current residential rate of $1.15 per per cubic metre, that is a significant savings for heavy users. The city began the phase-out of discounts in 2013 – at which time they had three pricing tiers, and the heaviest users paid the cheapest prices. Potable municipal water isn’t allowed to be used for irrigation in Abbotsford, but the city supplies agricultural-grade water to local farms. That water is allocated approximately “36 per cent to livestock, poultry and dairy operations, 10 per cent to greenhouse operations and 54 per cent to other agricultural uses,” according to city information. Though many greenhouse growers rely on the municipal water grid, Delli Santi said, most do all they can to conserve water – so she doesn’t buy the city’s hope to encourage conservation by cutting the discounted rate. “We’re told this is to encourage conser-
vation ... but if a plant needs water, you’ve got to feed it,” she said. Greenhouse growing systems route water directly to each plant, and recirculate the excess, she said. Many growers also collect rainwater when available to supplement the municipal water supply. “How much more can you conserve? You’re only giving the plant what it needs,” she said. Abbotsford’s municipal water system came under unusual stress this summer, when hot and dry weather lowered levels at the Dickson Lake reservoir and forced the city to extend the usual period for water use restrictions. According to a city web page explaining the change in water rates, “The pricing of water and sewer services is an important aspect of both water conservation and the generation of revenue needed to maintain our community’s infrastructure.”
7 things you need to know before putting your home up for sale this fall. Abbotsford - A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increas-
ingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market. As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7
deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”.

W e d n e s d a y ’ s Remembrance Day ceremony was the most successful one MC Art Turnbull has ever seen. “I’ve been attending here for five years, and it’s the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” the Royal Canadian Legion chaplain said. “The turnout was really great, and it was great to see all the young families and all the children there. It’s very important they get the message about remembrance.” He attributes the strong turnout partly to the unseasonably warm weather, but mostly to the renewed interest he’s seen lately in Canada’s military history. “I think people are getting more aware of the significance of our history ... and the sacrifice that has gone into making our nation the good place it is,” he said. Thousands witnessed the event at the Abbotsford Cenotaph, in Thunderbird Memorial Square, which featured the Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir and Royal Canadian Air Cadets 861 Silverfox Squadron band, and a prayer from the Khalsa Diwan Society Sikh Temple. The parade included veterans, active Canadian Forces personnel, police, fire, ambulance, correctional and border services, and cadets, Girl Guides and Scouts. Wreaths were laid by dignitaries and community groups, including MP Ed Fast, MLA Darryl Plecas, and Mayor Henry Braun.

It was a simple card of thanks, but a day later, David Kennard still finds himself overcome with emotion talking about it. When Kennard, who served in the army and air force for nearly 10 years, returned to his vehicle following Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Legion Wednesday,

he found on his windshield an envelope adorned with a blue heart and the words ‘Thank you’ in childish handwriting. Inside was a simple card. On one side a child had written the words “Thank You,” and “I love Canada” in big letters and drawn a scene of a battle. On the other side was a short message written by a parent, thanking the receiver for their service. The
message noted that the picture was drawn by a seven-year-old boy named Joel. For Kennard, who has veterans plates on his vehicle, the card was enough to bring him tears. He has a father who served, an uncle who died in Ortona, and friend who was killed in Cyprus. “It’s just unreal, and I was so touched,” Kennard said.

The generosity we are known for must prevail Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand The outpouring of humanitarian aid and care for Syrian refugees across the nation is both heartwarming and, to some degree, disconcerting. I mention the latter only because we will be facing a housing and employment conundrum for so many people, all at once. It is all well and good to provide government-assisted accommodation funding for individuals and families, but the amounts are equivalent to social assistance, and anyone already receiving that will clearly tell you $375 a month ($785 for families) doesn’t go very far in the Lower Mainland housing market. That said, there is a huge push for people to ‘donate’ a bedroom or vacant basement
suite to assist refugee resettlement, but the number of those coming here in the next couple of months – 3,000 by year’s end – is and will be somewhat overwhelming. Additionally, among that number are many children, with Surrey alone expecting approximately 500 kids to enter its schools. Like Abbotsford, Surrey is one of the few school districts in the province that is growing, and already facing challenges to find classrooms. Vancouver, conversely, has a reported 19 schools facing closure for lack of students, thus could easily accommodate a large influx of children. On the other hand, with the real estate market as it is, Vancouver appears to have little to no ability to provide housing for the families of those children. An even-greater challenge in this economy, will be to find jobs that will take willing and able-bodied refugees off social assistance. Only then will they be able to proudly and fully integrate into our society and their new home. I recall as a kid the Hungarian refugee
“crisis” and the little village where I grew up becoming home to at least one family. Their kids went to school with me, and the boy who was my age eventually went on to great success, achieving a doctorate among other accomplishments.
Homes, money, helping out .... there is a need for anything and everything.
The tragedy that is unfolding daily in Syria and throughout the Middle East is heart-breaking. Families willing to endure deprivation and possible death to escape the civil war carnage in their homeland in search of a better place for themselves and their children is something few in the comfort of this country can barely comprehend. We do, however, understand the tragedy

and heart-wrenching horror of those who are trying to escape, and of those who sadly have died in their quest for freedom from war and anarchy. More than a million Syrians are in need of resettlement in the next year alone, and Canada has committed to doing its part. So reach out we must, and we will. The generosity of our community and our province will prevail; homes will be found, kids will be educated and somewhere along the line, jobs will be created. In the meantime, you can find out how to help resolve this crying need by going online to issbc.org/refugee-crisis or by email at refugee.crisis@issbc.org Homes, money, helping out . . . there is a need for anything and everything. Over the years and generations, Canadians have helped many find a new and rewarding life in this nation of generosity. Let’s not falter on providing the same welcome to those fleeing Syria’s turmoil. markrushton@abbynews.com

PPV! ORTS & UFC HOME OF SP
Disappointed by prayer My wife and I had the pleasure of attending Abbotsford’s Remembrance Day ceremony at Thunderbird Park. The ceremony was extremely well done and well organized. It was well attended and what a beautiful day it was. Our only big disappointment was that a prayer was recited entirely in Punjabi. I’m guessing that, based on my recollection of the large grateful crowd present, that said prayer might have been understood by less than five per cent of those in attendance.
Today I became aware of an Abbotsford mom who in order to educate and emphasize the importance of Remembrance Day to her children (aged 7, 6 and 4), encourages them to write and draw pictures in a letter to veterans thanking them for their sacrifices. These letters were left
on vehicles in the local Legion parking lot or in Thunderbird Memorial Square. I cannot help but echo my thanks and acknowledgement to all the veterans and their families and feel secure that our youth are there to acknowledge and honour these sacrifices with us. Lest we forget. John Mahon

We were not the only ones expressing the same disappointment. Since Canada has two official languages one would have expected a French/English prayer whereas the majority present could have reflected upon some comforting words in either one of our official languages. The majority of us bowed our heads in prayer to totally unknown content. Special thanks and appreciation to all of those present. Tony Mortimer

Gratifying to see youth at ceremony My wife and I attended the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Abbotsford on Wednesday and were pleasantly surprised at the large numbers of people in attendance. It was gratifying to see our youth there to support, honour and acknowledge the sacrifices made on our behalf.

More help needed to stop human trafficking

Exploitation takes place at farms, in homes and restaurants Abbotsford News
More education along with a broad increase in support services are needed to help victims of human trafficking, participants at a community workshop on human trafficking heard last week. A lack of criminal convictions locally doesn’t mean human trafficking isn’t taking place in Abbotsford, Jassy Bindra, the RCMP’s human trafficking co-ordinator, told participants from a range of service agencies and community organizations at the workshop, which was held over two days. Although dozens of convictions have been obtained in Ontario and Quebec, British Columbia has only seen one human trafficking conviction under the criminal code. Trafficking sometimes occurs where people who are brought into Canada from out of the country, often legally, are coerced into working in poor conditions. But most of the trafficking and human exploitation that goes on in Canada revolves around prostitution, often of very young girls beholden to older men. “Our own children can be victims of trafficking as well,” Bindra said. During Bindra’s presentation on Thursday, two of those attending the workshop noted that they had encountered suspected trafficking cases locally. Victims sought help to get out of their situation, but declined to speak to police. It can be difficult to prove individual situations meet the precise definition of trafficking outlined in the criminal code, Bindra noted. Addressing trafficking, though, goes far beyond whether or not criminal charges can be laid. Speaking on a panel alongside representatives of three local service agencies, Abbotsford Police Sgt. Casey Vinet said much of the work that is done on helping exploited men, women and youth is done with the assistance of community groups who have close relationships with those at risk of being exploited. Joyce McEloes of Cyrus Centre, who appeared alongside Vinet on the panel, said Abbotsford has “some great things that are happening,” surrounding services being offered to at-risk youth. But all those on the panel – which also featured Christina Henderson of the Youth Resource Centre and Palwinder Kelay of Abbotsford Community
Services’ South Asian Community Resource Centre – said efforts to stop the exploitation of women must be broad. “There are many major gaps in the system that are necessary to fix,” Henderson said. Vinet noted that if an initiative at one organization leads to the discovery of more victims of suspected human trafficking, that creates a “ripple effect” that increases demand for services in other areas. The workshop also featured several calls for an immediate increase in both the amount of low-barrier housing offered in Abbotsford, and available mental health resources. Henderson said society would also be helped by more programs for offenders to prevent exploitation from beginning in the first place. The workshop, which was hosted by Abbotsford Community Services, hoped to acquaint local service providers with what is human trafficking, and what can be done to stop it and help those affected. Gugan Sidhu, who helped organize the workshop, said it’s important for those who might come across victims of trafficking to recognize the signs and know how to help. “When we think about human trafficking …. it seems like something that is far away,” she said. “But if you look at this, it’s happening in all of our communities.” Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald told The News that while human trafficking is not an “everyday occurrence” in the community, officers aren’t “naive enough to think it doesn’t happen.” He agreed that many incidents of human trafficking – which most often involve forcing women into the sex trade – go highly unreported, due to fear on the part of the victims. Abbotsford’s proximity to the border and presence of gangs and organized crime make it an area where such crimes are likely to exist. “(Gangs) see drugs as a commodity, and they see people as a commodity. Whatever is going to make them the biggest amount of money is where they’re going to go,” MacDonald said. He said it is difficult for the victims of human trafficking to come forward because they are fearful of repercussions from the people controlling them. Their lives, or the lives of their loved ones, are often threatened or they are told they will be deported or arrested.

This man is a suspect in a series of local robberies.
Robbery spree hits three business in same day Suspect carried bear spray, had distinctive tattoo
“Building a home and financing our business, it’s everything we’ve worked for.”
Police believe the same man is responsible for three business robberies on the same day earlier this week. Abbotsford Police say a masked man armed with a can of bear spray robbed a business in the 2600 block of Gladys Ave. Tuesday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. Two hours later, around 4:30 p.m., a similar robbery took place at a restaurant in the 31200 block of Maclure Road. That evening, a third robbery took place at another restaurant, in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way. During one of the incidents, bear spray was deployed in a business, leading to “very minor” injuries to one employee, according to Abbotsford Police Const. Paul Walker. Police say the similarities of the incidents lead them to believe the same person is responsible. The man wore a mask during all three robberies, but police have released an image of the man they believe to be the suspect, and who is believed to have entered one of the businesses the day before the robbery. The link was made because of a distinctive tattoo that appears to feature the letters ‘AC’ on the man’s neck. The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his 30s, 5’6” to 5’10”, of average build and wearing dark clothing. Police are also urging local businesses to be vigilant. Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225, or by text at 222973 (abbypd). They can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

Dramatic recovery for teen injured in bike accident Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
A teenager hospitalized with serious injuries after a fall at a local skatepark last week had his health improve dramatically this week. Justin Walsh had been airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital Nov. 4 after a serious accident at the McMillan Skatepark. Walsh had attempted a jump on his BMX bike, but had fallen and hit his head. At hospital, he was placed in an induced coma, had bleeding on the front left side of his brain, and his cheekbone was broken. While in hospital, he experienced several

The next morning, his mother was woken up by a phone call from the hospital and expected the worst, the friend said. Instead, it was Justin on the other end, sounding happy and wondering when his mother would be by. The friend said Justin was up and walking and slated to be transferred out of the intensive care unit on Thursday. “All of a sudden, he’s doing 80 per cent better.” There is now hope that Walsh will be released from hospital next week.

In a “high risk” gunpoint takedown, Abbotsford police arrested a 29-year-old man dressed as Marvel superhero Deadpool in a McDonald’s parking lot. Once they found out his sword and handgun were harmless props, they let him go.
According to APD Const. Paul Walker, police received reports of a costumed man carrying weapons in the Clearbrook Road and South Fraser Way area at about 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 9. He was wearing what witnesses describe as a “homemade”-looking version of the comic book character’s outfit,

Chestnuts: Low in Fat, High in Fiber I can hardly believe that it was only 10 years ago I first tried roasted chestnuts. It was on a cold winter afternoon while strolling past all of the decorative lights and stores on Robson Street in Vancouver. We came across a street vendor selling these heated little goodies and decided to give them a try. They were incredible. A comforting buttery nut with a flavour uniquely their own, still encased in their shell but scored to ease the task of peeling. I couldn’t have found anything better at the time. Grasping a warm paper sack of roasted chestnuts while the crisp winter air surrounded us was reminiscent of a classic Christmas story. As a child, I always came across chestnuts scattered on the ground amidst the fallen autumn leaves, and never thought twice about them. Now I have a completely different outlook. I purchase chestnuts fresh from the local supermarket when they’re in season, on a regular basis. When selecting them, choose ones that feel heavy and dense for their size and have a shiny outer brown shell that does not collapse when pushed upon. They will keep at room temperature in a cool dark area for about a week, and for approximately one month in the refrigera-
Preparing them for roasting is a bit tedious but well worth the effort. While your oven is preheating to 425 degrees, score the brown shell with a sharp knife. Place the flat side of the chestnut down on a cutting board and cut an “x” shape carefully on the rounded side facing upwards. I find that a fine-toothed serrated knife works best. Keeping the shell on while cooking is important for holding in their warmth upon serving. Seal them with a few tablespoons of water in aluminum foil and roast for approximately 50 minutes. Be careful of the escaping hot steam when unwrapping them and serve immediately. Alternatively, place approximately eight of the scored chestnuts in a bowl and microwave
for approximately one to one and a half minutes. The shelling process afterwards is not only made easier by cooking them, but also adds to the nostalgic amusement of eating this wonderful treat. Chestnuts are not similar to others in the nut family, as they are more perishable and their fat content is significantly less. With only 2 or 3 grams of fat per 100g, chestnuts weigh in far less than other nuts that may contain upwards of 30 to 70 grams of fat per 100g. Chestnuts also have approximately one third of the calories of other nuts and are a much greater source of dietary fiber. One of the downsides to chestnuts however, is that their starchier content contributes to a much higher carbohydrate count compared to other nuts. The chestnut tree is actually related to the oak tree and can live to be up to 500 years. They usually measure approximately 50 feet in height but can grow to be over 100 feet tall. Chestnut wood, like oak, is much sought after for furniture building for its fine grains and hard composition. Make this wonderfully historic treat part of your holiday season this year, and you may catch yourself humming “chestnuts roasting on an open fire...”. tor in a plastic bag. Alternatively, they can also be frozen for up to six months. Purchasing them from a reputable supplier is recommended if you are unfamiliar with chestnuts, as there is a wild variety named “horse chestnuts” that are inedible.

Independent Living IN ABBOTSFORD
Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
A group of 15 runners, including 10 from the Abbotsford area, travelled to Ethiopia this week to hit the local roads, learn about the culture and raise money for desperately needed water projects. The trip originates with the annual Run for Water, and was prompted by inquiries from participants wondering about seeing first hand the water projects built with money raised by the event. Several months, and a lot of planning later, 14 men and women, along with Run for Water executive director Peg Peters, arrived in the country to begin 10 days of run-

the runners have not only paid their own way over, but have committed to raising $100,000 for future projects. Already fourfifths of that total has been raised. Included in the itinerary is participation in the Great Ethiopian Run, a massive 10-kilometre event through the streets of Addis Ababa with tens of thousands of other singing and dancing runners. Participants will be welcomed into one village at a feast where an ox will be slaughtered in the runners’ honour, and Peters, who has travelled to Ethiopia eight times now, expects the trip to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those

He said there was an “overwhelming response” when the idea for the journey was first floated. “The idea of getting on our feet and running in people’s shoes really connected … You get to know them, you get to know their terrain.” Running is a way of life in Ethiopia, and Peters said jogging
around the country will let runners both experience the majestic vistas of the green and mountainous terrain, and foster a closer connection with the locals. “We’re using running as the vehicle to encounter people on the ground,” Peters said. The run won’t be without its challenges, however. Although the participants are
runners, the elevation of Ethiopia could pose difficulties. But Peters says that will be part of the learning experience. “The places we’re going, tourists don’t go … It’s really a cool experience. I think they’re going to be blown away by the visuals.” Money raised by the runners will go towards digging a well to supply clean water, along with building a new school for the 2,700 people who live in Kudu, Ethiopia. “It’s not a popularity contest, it’s an actual juried competition,” Asaph said. “In business, often times people work hard without getting the recognition they so surely deserve.”
Allan asaph The Business Excellence Awards showcase not only success and quality, but the vast diversity of enterprises in Abbotsford.
Around 100 nominees will vie for the Business Excellence title in 12 different categories that represent a range of sectors, including Retail, Manufacturing, and Agriculture and Agri-Business. Businesses do not have to be chamber members to be nominated.
And it’s an opportunity for nominees who work throughout the year – sometimes with little public recognition – to be hailed for their excellent work.
Each category is judged by a panel of three judges who interview each nominee and then come to a decision about who wins the award.

Winners in each category receive engraved crystal trophies, and nominees are also recognized with a plaque and framed certificate. Mary Boonstra, who directs the event’s entertainment proceedings, has once again lined up an array of homegrown talent.
Asaph said the event is always a fun experience, with those nominees in attendance showing their pride when the candidates vying for the Business Excellence Award are announced. SEE WHAT JUST SOME OF OUR SATISFIED CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY: I am exhilarated at the results I see each week. I feel great about myself! I have gone beyond my goal and feel better than I ever have. I really like Tanya. She really encourages me and makes me feel good about myself. She’s a great motivator. The day I went way beyond my goal was the day I knew hiring Tanya was worth it!
There are so many good things I can say about True Health Fitness. The owner is extremely involved and creates exercise programs for me and my wife to do at home. All the exercises done were made for ME... not ‘one-size-fits-all’ programs made for someone else. The Personal Training at the Studio is freaking fantastic. The Staff are experienced and so great! Seeing Tanya keeps me accountable, motivated and on track.
Tanya takes what I was initially concerned would be a ‘drudgery’and makes it exciting, encouraging and an enthusiastic time! I am thankful to you and your staff for your positive and enthusiastic encouragement... AND FOR KICKING MY BUTT WHEN I NEED IT!

Bighill brings it to Bateman Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
The Robert Bateman Timberwolves unleashed a secret late-season weapon on Monday - a visit from star B.C. Lions linebacker Adam Bighill. The Grey Cup winner and CFL all-star visited the team to participate in a practice and help motivate the team before the playoff date with Prince George in Kamloops on Friday. Bighill also made appearances earlier this year at an Abbotsford Secondary Panthers practice and helped
give away shoulder pads with Nissan at a W.J. Mouat Secondary Hawks practice. He said he enjoys helping fuel the passion for football in Abbotsford. “I love football and I love giving back, so to have the opportunity to work with these guys is a real pleasure for me,” he said. “It feels good to be more involved in the community and share some of my knowledge here at Bateman and with the other teams in town.” He said interest in the sport is strong in Abbotsford. “It’s really alive and
well out here,” he said. “There’s a lot of support out here in the Fraser Valley and it’s great to see. There’s lots of kids coming out for football and I think it’s only getting bigger and the teams are only getting more competitive, it’s pretty cool to see.” The former Central Washington State Wildcat said success is all about effort. “You can’t substitute hard work with anything else,” he said. “My favourite quote is you need to outwork your competition so there is none. If you outwork your com-

petition, chances are you will earn what you want.” Bighill and the Lions travel to Calgary to face the Stampeders on Sunday, and he said he likes the Lions’ chances of pulling off an upset. “It’s the time of year we play for and it’s always exciting to get an opportunity to play for a Grey Cup,” he said. “We feel good about our opportunity to go into McMahon Stadium and win. We’ve been getting better every week, so I think we’re going to surprise some people on Sunday.”

Three-point champs crowned Abbotsford high school basketball stars had the opportunity to shine at UFV on Friday. The first-ever Abbotsford High School ThreePoint Shooting Championship saw the most promising long-range shooters in town battle it out for bragging rights in a contest similar to the NBA’s three-point shooting contest. Competitors had one minute to shoot five basketballs from five stations all around the arc. Each shot was worth one point, with the final shot on each rack, the money ball, worth two. Athletes competed in a preliminary round at UFV on Friday afternoon, with the top three girls and top three boys advancing to the finals at halftime of each of the Cascades games on Friday night. Yale Secondary Grade 10 student Sapna Deo won the girls title, beating out W.J. Mouat students Karanveer Rai and Amna Hadzovic. Mouat Grade 12 student Jass Singh defeated MEI’s Daniel Siemens and Mouat’s Kenan Hadzovic in the boys final.

T-Birds split in Prince George Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
A long trip up north ended on a good note for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. The T-Birds traveled to Prince George to battle the Cariboo Cougars for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday. Fraser Valley tied the Saturday game at one at 4:26 of the first period when Jonathan Rees tallied, with Jonathan
Stein and Abbotsford’s Kyle Davis drawing the assists on the power play goal. The Cougars then scored three unanswered goals to earn the 4-1 win. Penalty troubles hurt the T-Birds, as they racked up 26 minutes in the game. The teams traded leads for most of the game, with Fraser Valley falling behind in both the first and
second periods before evening the game. The Thunderbirds took the lead for good late in the second period and held on for the 5-4 win. Goal scorers on Sunday were: Abbotsford’s Kyle Davis, Kaelen Anderson, Mackenzie Wight, Matthew Dyck, and Abbotsford’s Justin Plett. Plett also set up the game-winning goal. The Thunderbirds
now sport a record of five wins, five losses and four ties, and sit in eighth place in the 11team British Columbia Major Midget League. They host the North Island Royals on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game occurs at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, with a 4 p.m. face-off. Sunday’s game goes down at 10 a.m. at the Abbotsford Centre.

After opening the season with wins, the CBC Bearcats men’s and women’s basketball teams lost some grip on their winning ways. The teams came up winless in travels to Squamish and Vancouver over the weekend, losing all four games to the Quest Kermodes and Langara Falcons. The women lost 82-53 to Quest on Friday, in a game that Quest led mostly from start to finish. The Bearcats trailed 39-23 at the half, but had a good third quarter matching the Kermodes 18-18. Quest then took over in the fourth, outscoring CBC 25-12. Guard Grace Tadrous had a team high 12 points, and Sarah Rozendal added 11 points and six rebounds. Forward Tolu Ojo grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. The Bearcats shot only 20 per cent in the first half and committed a total of 37 turnovers. The women fared better against Langara on Saturday, but fell 63-57. Mandy Van Delden led the way with 17 points and five rebounds, with Rozendal scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds. Deanna Esau added 11 points for CBC. The men opened and closed well against Quest on Friday, but couldn’t overcome a third quarter in which they were outscored 24-16 in the third quarter to lose 81-78. CBC had a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double digits. Konrad Jamie had a team-high 18 points and guard Kevin Davis had 12 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Also reaching double digits were Umbori Watson (16) and Elijah Calhoun (14). The Bearcats shot an impressive 45 per cent from the field, but were out-rebounded 47-38 by Quest. The third quarter again killed the Bearcats against the Langara Falcons on Saturday. CBC saw a 38-35 lead vanish after the Falcons outscored them 31-15 in the third, and CBC couldn’t close the gap. Davis had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Calhoun contributed with 14 points and nine rebounds. Umbori Watson (13 points) and Si Woo Yun (14 points) also had solid games for CBC. The Bearcats next make their home debut on Friday against Camosun College. The women tipoff at 6 p.m., and the men get underway at 8 p.m. They also host the VIU Mariners on Sunday, with start times of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

UFV, Mennonite Faith and Learning Society sign partnership The University of the Fraser Valley and the Mennonite Faith and Learning Society (MFLS) have formalized a relationship that has already resulted significant achievements over the past six years. The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during a gathering at Friesen House, the residence of UFV President Mark Evered. Since 2009 the MFLS has aided the development and delivery of UFV’s certificate program in Mennonite Studies and a centre to support this work. This new agreement brings a renewed commitment to partnership, especially in the development of UFV’s new multidisciplinary and multi-faith program in Peace and Conflict Studies. The evening was enriched by contributions from members of several faith communities who joined the MFLS in their support for this work. Donations for the new program have come from members of a number of faiths and cultures and have already exceeded half a million dollars. “There is much we can learn from AnabaptistMennonite values, thought, and history,” said Evered. “We are extremely grateful to the members of the Mennonite community for their commitment to share their knowledge, understanding, and financial support for this vital work.” “The Mennonite Faith and Learning Society is indeed pleased and privileged to be part of the UFV Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies program, which reflects a core value of the Anabaptist-Mennonite heritage,” said James Nikkel, MFLS president. UFV is awaiting approval from the BC Ministry of Advanced Education for its proposed Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies. In addition to analyzing conflict and approaches to peace in the classroom, students will develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience in conflict transformation and reconciliatory work in the Fraser Valley. Professor Steven Schroeder was recently named teaching chair in Peace and Conflict Studies at UFV.

Alex Reimer is wired for success. To a teenager who loved installing car stereos, the life of an electrician sounded pitch perfect. But the road of life can swerve suddenly, and several years and one serious brain injury later, Reimer finds himself soaring through the ranks of the oil and gas industry, and earning the 2015 Distinguished Young Alumni Award from UFV along the way. From the frozen world of developing gas plants, to the creature comforts of leadership conferences in luxury big-city hotels, Reimer’s work is as diverse as his career path. While still in his 20s, he was lead contracting inspector for a $7-million compressor station — overseeing electrical and instrum e n tation installation at a plant REIMER worth $ 1 0 0 million while managing budgets, contractors, and ensuring the safety of a 60-person crew. Barely 30, he now juggles his own very successful company, Eye on Electric, with family life and his role as one of the industry’s youngest electrical and instrumentation construction inspectors. His road to success started after being accepted to UFV’s Career Technical Centre (CTC). A joint project of the Abbotsford School District and UFV, CTC provided practical trades training to high school students, giving a head start in trades and technical fields. “I think it was the best thing that ever happened, Reimer says of his experience. He returned to UFV to start his journeyman

process, learning everything from power distribution systems to punctuality, thanks to one instructor who locked classroom doors every morning at 8 a.m. But it wasn’t all work and no play. Skydiving, bungee jumping, and cliff jumping helped pass the time, but one fateful day snowboarding on Cypress Mountain almost ended it all. Reimer was sailing down a run in 2008 when he caught an edge and fell, slamming his unprotected head into the icy hard snow. Headache aside, he seemed fine until waking the next morning gripped in a seizure. A friend called 911, the ambulance rushed him to hospital, and the doctors discovered bleeding near the brain. “I almost bit the big one after that crash,” Reimer said. The injury left him with minor memory issues, but no major noticeable effects. “I don’t take as many risks, but I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing; you still have to live your life.” These days, when he’s not working long hours, enjoying time with his family, or searching for a decent seared tuna dinner in his adopted home of Fort St John, Reimer still finds time to study up on the latest electrical and instrumentation innovations. “If you’re not learning, you’re sitting still,” he says. Reimer accepted the Young Distinguished Alumni award Nov. 12 at UFV’s Town and Gown gala dinner.

ICBC ends special credit card payments on monthly plans ICBC no longer allows customers who are on monthly payment plans to make special lump sum or early payments by credit card. There were 55,000 such payments made last year – a small fraction of the 1.4 million customers on monthly payment plans. Regular monthly payments have always been required to be by preauthorized debit from a bank account, but early payments in advance of the regular ones or lumpsum payments to end the monthly plan could be made by credit card, said spokesman Adam Grossman. The move to end that option effective Nov. 1

is expected to save ICBC up to $1 million a year in credit card merchant fees. Monthly plan users can still make early or lumpsum payments by debit, cheque or cash. About 44 per cent of all motorists use an ICBC payment plan, while the rest pay their annual insurance all at once, many of them by credit card. That option is not affected by the change. A 5.5 per cent basic auto insurance premium increase announced last month by ICBC took effect Nov. 1. It’s still subject to approval by the B.C. Utilities Commission.

Interviewing: Be careful what you ask You’re wrapping up a job interview of an amazing applicant; she has all the education, experience, and interpersonal skills you’re looking for. As is your practice, you try to connect with the applicant on a more personal level and so the interview morphs into a more casual conversation. She mentions she is new to town. With the purest of intentions, you remember that your church has a “couples’ night” next week, and believe it would be a great opportunity for her to meet new people. You confirm with her that she is in fact married, and since you don’t want to impose, you ask if she’s comfortable with the fact that it is a
church-sponsored event. She’s delighted that you offered and she makes arrangements to see you there. Later that week, you extend an offer of employment to her and let the other applicants know they were unsuccessful. G r e a t ! Right? Doug M a y b e not! The BC Human Rights Code prohibits employers from refusing to employ any individual based on various grounds, which include: race, religion, gender, marital or family status, disability, or sexual orientation. questions of job candidates that engage these topics could provide a basis for those not selected to claim that you have violated the Code. Back to our hypothetical example: you asked a question about the app l i c a n t ’s marital status, and inq u i r e d about her stance on religion. Even if you weren’t intending to base your hiring decision on the answers to these questions, another applicant who revealed to you that, for example, they were single, or that
Lester
they did not attend church, may claim that your hiring decision was based on improper factors. For employers, the best way to avoid accusations of discrimination is simply to avoid asking questions which engage these topics during the interview process. It is critical to be aware of the requirements placed on employers through the code. To be certain, making an overt decision not to hire an applicant based on any one of the enumerated grounds in the code is against the law. Perhaps more surprisingly, however, are inadvertent violations of the code. Even without any
discriminatory intent, certain questions or topics of conversation that arise during an interview may generate legal liability. All business owners should consider speaking to a lawyer with employment law expertise – not only to craft legally acceptable interview questions, but also to assist you with any other employment related issue you may face. Planning daffodils for the spring Nothing in this world personifies spring like daffodils. Their vibrant yellows are the antidote to long wet winters. They just lift your spirits in so many ways. But ‌ there’s no such thing as an ordinary yellow daffodil. Today, there are lots of choices. ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’ blooms about 2-3 weeks earlier than any other varieties. Depending upon the weather in late winter, I’ve seen them bloom as early as late February and what a

and then pop back up and continue blooming. You’ll also find the earlier they bloom in cooler weather, the longer they bloom as well. One of the complaints about daffodils and other spring bulbs is the relatively short time they perform in the garden. Consider mix of early, mid- and late-blooming varieties From A35
‘Yellow Brick Road’. It’s amazing that these daffodils bloom and bloom while other displays simply
end. Keeping that yellow colour going is a wonderful investment in early lasting colour. Don’t tell your neighbours why your
daffodils out-bloom theirs – they make for nice bragging rights. ‘King Alfreds’ are perhaps the most well known old-fashioned
daffodils, but honestly, they have been replaced by far better performing varieties. ‘Flower Carpet’ is one of the best for today’s
older varieties. It also stands up well in windy wet weather. ‘Carlton’ is a real stocky variety as well, and I love its sulphur

yellow colour. It’s an oldie but goodie and a must for your garden. Believe it or not, the very best selling daffodil today is the neatest, tidiest variety called ‘Tetéa-Teté’. It’s a superstar, growing about half the size of other daffodils. Each flower head has a cluster of tiny yellow blooms, creating a great show. Because of its smaller size, it out-blooms and out-performs almost any other variety. It is also one of the best naturalizers and repeat blooms year after year with an even better display. When the colour is gone, the biggest bonus is the smaller, neat and tidy foliage looks great in your garden. Remember, if you’re planting now, all daffodils need welldrained sandy soil – no heavy clay. They will do equally well in full sun or partial shade. Plant them in a location where they can repeat bloom year after year, creating a long term display. We love them but the deer don’t, another added bonus.

DEYS Sister, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt and Friend, Corry was born on June 30, 1939 in Harlingen, Netherlands. She moved to Canada in 1954 where she began her greatest adventure of raising a family. Corry was known as a friendly bus driver, a great cook, and a generous woman. Her life was not always easy but she tried to make the best of every situation by “letting go and letting God.” She pursued a career in health care and was passionate about helping others. Corry passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in her home, on October 25, 2015. She is deeply missed by her children: Martin de Jong, Peter de Jong (Dawne), Maxine de Jong, David de Jong (Christine), her 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, her siblings: John Deys (Joan), Bernie Deys (Maureen), Joanne Hart (Ken), and her nieces and nephews. She found peace, and for that we are truly grateful. “The righteous perish, and no one ponders it in his heart; devout men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.” Isaiah 57:1-2 There will be a celebration of Mom’s life for family and friends on Sunday, November 22nd at 3:00. In accordance with the British Columbia’s Pest Management Act and Regulations, KMC is required to develop a Pest Management Plan (PMP) (for KMC the PMP is referred to as the Integrated Vegetation Management Plan (IVMP)). The PMP manages problem vegetation, including control of noxious weeds and invasive plants within KMC facilities. Facilities include pump stations, valve stations, terminals, tank farms and office/maintenance facilities. All facilities are fenced, secure compounds not accessible to the general public. The facilities are located in proximity to the following communities in British Columbia: Valemount, Albreda, Blue River, Avola, Vavenby, Clearwater, Darfield, McLure, Kamloops, Merritt, Kingsvale, Hope, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Sumas, Langley, Burnaby and Richmond. This PMP has been prepared to replace the existing 5 year PMP which expires in 2016. The proposed duration of the IVMP (PMP) is from March 31, 2016 to March 31, 2021. The vegetation management and weed control methods proposed for use include hand pulling, mowing, trimming, pruning, selective slashing, girdling, geotextile fabric, retaining existing low ground cover, and seeding, fertilization where set backs permit and tree/shrub plantings. The use of pesticides is intended within the area to which the PMP (IVMP) applies. KMC conducts all work, including pest management, in strict adherence with all applicable laws and regulations. The common names and an example of trade names of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: aminocyclopyrachlor (Navius VM), aminopyralid (Milestone), chlorsulfuron (Telar), clopyralid (Lontrel 360), dicamba (Vanquish), diflufenzopyr (Overdrive), diuron (Diurex 80 WDG), flumioxazin (Payload), fluroxypyr (Retain B), glyphosate (Vantage XRT), imazapyr (Arsenal), indaziflam (Esplanade SC), MCPA (MCPA Amine 500), mecoprop-P (Mecoprop-P), metsulfuron methyl (Escort), picloram (Tordon 22K), triclopyr (Garlon XRT), 2,4-D (2,4-D Amine 600), Hasten (adjuvant) and siloxylated polyether (adjuvant). Application methods include: backpack, power hose and nozzle, wick/wipe-on applicator, squirt bottle and boom sprayer. A draft copy of the proposed IVMP (PMP) and maps of the proposed treatment areas may be examined in detail online at: http://www.kindermorgan.com/content/docs/kmc_facilities_ivmp.pdf or by contacting the Applicant listed above.
