Three police vehicles damaged in early morning chase C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The Kimberley RCMP is down three police vehicles after a pursuit early Thursday morning. Cpl. Chris Newel reports that the local detachment responded to a theft in progress at a local golf course (which he did not name).
“An officer responded to the location, where he came across an approaching truck that purposefully struck the police vehicle,” Newel said. “The truck fled after hitting the marked police vehicle. The officer determined that the truck was a stolen vehicle. A second officer was approaching the scene and his vehicle was also struck.”
Newel says police were able to follow the suspect vehicle into the downtown area of Kimberley. “Once into the downtown core, the vehicle stopped and backed up, hitting the front of the police vehicle. The subjects started down a dead end with a police vehicle behind, realizing they were trapped they turned around and attempted
to hit the police vehicle again, but the officer was able to get out of the way. At this point the suspect driver lost control and veered off the road and struck a building damaging the business front.” The suspect vehicle headed towards the Kimberley Alpine Resort, where again officers were able to contain the vehicle, Newel says.
“The driver rammed both police vehicles, disabling one and was able to take off. The suspect vehicle drove into the Kimberley Ski Hill maintenance yard where again two police cars were able to box the suspect vehicle in and get it stopped. See CHASE, page 3 “Two suspects fled on foot, but

It is a message that Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick repeats again and again — this is a regional economy and no one municipality can go it alone. One of McCormick’s goals has been to create partnerships to encourage economic development. Last week, Mayor and Council of the City of Kimberley met with the Chief and Council of Band on November 5th to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The two councils met in March of 2015 to discuss their intentions to establish an effective working relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation, and now that initiative has been put in writing and signed. The Memorandum of Understanding between the parties recognizes that: The interests of all persons living in their respective communities are best served by working together in a spirit of cooperation. The City of Kimberley lies within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation
There are mutually beneficial opportunities to enhance the region’s economic, social-cultural, and environmental significance through maintaining a meaningful and positive government to government relationship Building an effective relationship will create certainty and harmony for neighbouring communities and will begin an important dialogue in anticipation of successful treaty negotiations
Kimberley City Council received a delegation from BC Timber Sales on Monday evening at their regular meeting regarding the use of 4th Avenue for log hauling from a cut block in the Mark Creek Watershed. Steve Knowles and George Edney of BC Timber Sales visited to try to get Council on board with 130 loads of logs coming down 4th Avenue this winter. There are two blocks of timber proposed for sale in the watershed. One will be hauled out through Low Pass, the other through Townsite. This would not be the first time logs were hauled out this way, there have been numerous loads taken out on 4th Avenue since 2007. Knowles said that BC Timber Sales were prepared to monitor road conditions, and abide by load restrictions. However, in preliminary negotiations, City staff indicated they would be looking for a deposit. “We don’t think this is manageable,” Knowles said. “How would you adjudicate it? The City also wants weight restrictions. In winter that’s not reasonable.” See LOGGING, page 3

The West Kootenay EcoSociety has lost its challenge of the creation of Jumbo Glacier Resort Municipality. BC Supreme Court Justice Grace Choi ruled Tuesday that the municipality’s creation was reasonable and dismissed the society’s application for a judicial review. The case was heard in Vancouver in July. The EcoSociety argued the government’s formation of a municipality with no residents was wrong because such a municipality can only be created where there is a reasonable expectation that it will have an electorate and elections within four years. However, the province argued the Local Government Act places no such restrictions on the minister’s discretion and that the only prerequisite is that a development agreement must be in place. Choi agreed: “I conclude the minster’s de-

RCMP cars damaged in chase From Page 1 “Two suspects fled on foot, but were apprehended a short distance away. One suspect was taken to hospital for possible injuries.” Two police officers sustained back injuries as a result of the collisions; a third police officer sustained an injury to his eye during the
foot pursuit. Newel spoke to the Bulletin Thursday morning, at which time charges were still being discussed, although they will begin with possible charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Flight from Police, Dangerous Driving and Theft. The possibility of
drugs and/or alcohol being involved will also be investigated. Newel said the intent was to get them before a judge on Thursday. The incident began with two officers from Kimberley, and then additional backup arrived from the Cranbrook Detachment.
Logging hauls on 4th Avenue From page 1 Knowles also said BC Timber Sales was looking for a quick decision. “We have already built the roads into that block. We need to move the wood. “We want to be proactive with the City. There is a plan in place to monitor and historically that route has had industrial traffic.” Edney added that if an agreement couldn’t be reached with the City, BC Timber Sales would have to build a road through the watershed. “That’s what will happen. You don’t want to risk that side of things.” Coun. Albert Hoglund said that last time there were logs hauled out through 4th Avenue there were concerns about noise and the time of day some of the hauling took place. He also said that there was a history of industrial traffic when the Sullivan Mine was open but that Cominco was paying industrial taxes at the time. After the delegation presented, Council had a more detailed discussion, and it was clear there was an appetite for getting some kind of monetary contribution from BC Timber Sales. “It’s one of our major roads and it’s not in great shape,” said Coun. Darryl Oakley. “130 big logging trucks have a huge potential to chew up the road.” The potential need to repave the road was the issue, Oakley said, and he wasn’t comfortable that the damage would be
visible until spring, by which time the deposit, should there be one, would already have been returned. City CAO Scott Sommerville said that the St. Mary Road was paved with logging money, because CanFor was willing to pay for upgrades. “It’s a tough way to do business, but I don’t see the benefit of 130 logging trucks on our road.” Oakley continued to worry about the risk of damaging the road. “I appreciate it’s business and jobs but it’s our road. I’m disappointed in the delegation. I thought they were going to offer to help. Part of their business plan should be helping pay for the road.” Hoglund said it was unlikely weight restrictions would work. “You put on weight restrictions and instead of 130 trucks, you have 260. I think we should say we want a deposit.” “I don’t like a deposit,” Oakley said. “It will be frozen and we wont’ see the damage before we give it back. I think they should pay.” “We offered a rate they should pay, then softened it to a deposit, then they didn’t like the deposit,” Sommerville said. Having made their feelings on the matter quite clear, Council has directed staff to hammer out a deal with BC Timber Sales.
The first professional production of ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’, presented by Seattle Children’s Theatre in November, 1982, was described by The Seattle Times as “One of the best Christmas stories ever – and certainly one of the funniest”. Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Barbara Robinson, published in 1971, it tells the story of a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas nativity play who are faced with having to cast the toughest, meanest, most awful family of kids in town, the Herdmans, despite the protests of their own two kids and most of the church ladies. It’s a plot ripe for comedy and the script contains some very funny business and humorous dialogue which have made it continuously popular as a seasonal entertainment in the USA and Canada and, under alternate titles, elsewhere in the world. If you are nostalgic about Christmas nativity plays of yesteryear which you enjoyed or, perhaps, suffered through as a child actor or as a doting parent, then you will almost certainly enjoy this return to that unsophisticated, improbably cast, simply set and amateurishly costumed theatrical form authentically presented by Off Centre Players in the Theatre at Centre 64 this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 12, 13, & 14. It certainly took me back to the Sunday school concerts and elementary school Christmas productions I saw or participated in during the 1950s, the era in which this play is set, and for

You remember them, don’t you, the manger scene with the three wise men played by pre-pubescent boys turbaned in towels and cloaked in bath robes, pre-school angels in tinsel tiaras and tissue paper wings, Christmas carols sung slightly off key but oh so sweetly by those cherubic little faces? 60 years on, do they still do that kind of thing, I wonder? Well, the Bradley family in this play sure try their best to pull off such a production in their local church but the Herdman kids introduce some decidedly unexpected elements that provide many of the laughs that make this comedy a perpetual favourite. Off Centre Players introduce some unexpected elements of their own in the casting of this play, too. No doubt due to a shortage of sufficiently skilled juvenile actors, director Michelle Lemay has cast several adults in children’s roles. For example, the central character of Beth, the young teenage daughter of the Bradley family, is played by Brigitte Franyo. Beth holds the story together as the narrator as well as being an integral part
of the story itself. All credit to Brigitte, we soon forget that this is a mature women performing before us; she is immediately convincing as an outspoken, ambitious, but frustrated kid, trying to get things right in the face of daunting odds. Her brother Charlie, played by Connor Klassen, also rings true for the most part as an angst-ridden youngster, providing some very amusing depictions of childish sulks. I must admit that I was at first confused by the roles played by Brodie Peterson and Joanne Wilkinson as the brutish Ralph and bullying Imogene Herdman respectively, taking them for parents rather than siblings of the other Herdman kids. The physical imbalance of size and voice and features compared with the child actors playing the younger Herdman siblings accounts for this initial confusion. It’s a difficult trick to pull off, mixing actors of differing generations playing same age roles, and despite their energetic and antic performances, it required a considerable suspension of disbelief for me to accept these two characters as kids. But once you get past these perception barriers, there is much to be enjoyed in the frantic
interactions of the characters on stage. And when the play within the play, the Christmas pageant itself, is finally performed, there are some choice moments to be enjoyed. Look out for the abrupt and loud entrances of the archangel, convincingly performed by Gwen Davies as Gladys Herdman and the brief appearance of the littlest Christmas angels in the choir; just how cute can kids get! The play has a large cast, 26 on stage at the end, so you are bound to know someone in the show, maybe several It’s a small town, after all. The show is only one hour long, no intermission, and it rolls along at a good pace, with action in front of the curtain while set changes are made. If you are at all hard of hearing, try to get a seat up front as some of the smaller voices don’t carry well to the back. But any seat in the house is a good one for this bright and breezy play, performed in front of a simple but colourful set. And as a special treat, in keeping with Christmas pageants, the audience gets to sing along with the cast in a well-known Christmas carol to get you in the mood for the upcoming festive season.

KIMBERLEY NEWS November 14, 1956 Kimberley Remembers Her Fallen Heroes
“To the Honour and Glory of the Dead, I unveil this Cenotaph”... thus simply did A.T. Richardson, president of the Canadian Legion, Kimberley Branch, sum up for his listeners, the many years of endeavour that have finally borne fruit in the creation of a memorial to our dead of two world wars. In bright sunshine the people of Kimberley and district assembled at the cenotaph. Led by the Colour Party and the Guard of Honour, and the Kimberley Pipe Band, members of Canadian Legion and its Auxiliary, the 17th Field Squadron, R.C.E., and Cadets and Cadettes of 266 Kimberley Squadron, R.C.A.C., and the Elks, marched down Spokane Street and along Deer Park Avenue, to take up their places around the cenotaph. Canon R.E.M. Yer-
burgh, Legion Chaplain, gave the address. “Thirty-eight years ago,” he reminded listeners, “Peace came to the war-torn fields of France and Belgium, bought with the blood of thousands who died in the cause of freedom. Secure in his opinion that such a war could never happen again, man enjoyed the fatness of the land and prospered. “Again war came and ravaged Europe and spread into the Far East. Again the price was apid in blood and peace and prosperity came to the lands of the earth. “But Communist hordes brought new war to Korea, only to find a strong United Nations willing and ready to use arms to drive out the transgressor. Again blood was the price of peace. “This month Israel marched her forces into Egypt but the United Nations had no army ready and the United States was busy with an election. Britain and France intervened – whether rightly or wrongly will have to be decided by history – and a United
Nations police force came into being. Now Hungary cries for help for freedom – but gets only noble resolutions. Truly the price of freedom is blood and eternal vigilance. “This cenotaph is a reminder to us of the cost of freedom – a reminder to us, to our children, to our children’s children, and to generations unborn. “This is a unique memorial – built by old soldiers with their own money and their own hands, from the native rock of the mountains around them. “May it remind us of those who died for our freedom – a freedom that we must guard jealously.” Following the unveiling and dedication of the cenotaph, the “Lament” was played by Pipers Scott and Oliphant. Then came the “Last Post”, the two minutes of silence and “Reveille”, the silver notes of the bugle echoing and re-echoing up the valley. Led by His Worship, mayor Swan, representatives of the various organizations present, and
private citizens, moved forward to place their wreaths at the base of the cenotaph. For a moment they stood, head bowed, before this impressive, yet simple memorial to the 24 men from this district who paid the price of freedom with their own blood. Then they returned to their places. During the day many visited the monument to read the names of the fallen and to admire the natural stone cenotaph topped by its lighted torch. Music for the ceremony was provided by the Kimberley Brass Band, under leadership of Bandmaster J. Pearson. The honour guard was a representative from each of the three services, headed by Sgt. E.V. MacDonald of the local militia. W. Barber headed the Colour Party, including two local R.C.M.P. officers in full dress. Boy Scouts handed out the programs. “Last Post” and “Reveille” were played by Sgt. Ted Holtz of the local militia.

Ministries Encouraged to Provide Enhanced Levels of Support to Control Invasive Plants
A letter will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure and the Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations encouraging them to provide enhanced levels of support to control invasive plants on Crown Land. In addition, RDEK staff will consult with the Board and begin enhanced enforcement activities on private properties identified to have invasive plant concerns.

The Board will be requesting the Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations establish a Section 16 map reserve over the foreshore and bed of Tie and Rosen Lakes to allow the RDEK to complete an Official Community Plan for the area and develop policies to manage group moorage facilities and docks fronting public land. A Section 16 map reserve will allow the Province to refuse to accept certain types of foreshore tenure applications. The Board’s request is the result of a recently launched planning process for the lake communities that is expected to address issues related to shoreline development.

Looking For Something Else and Finding Life
W
e are taught to admire the person who seems to know where s/he is going in life. Society tells us that setting goals in life is an important life skill. People repeat maxims such as “You can’t hit a target you haven’t set up” or “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” Or they ask, “Where will your life be in 3–5 years?” There is some value to setting goals for yourself. But I am discovering that it’s not really as critical as some people think it is. These days, when people ask about the next 5 years of my life, I often respond, “I’d be grateful to be alive, thank you.” I don’t mean to be flip; I simply want to emphasize that to me the important issue is how I live my life, and not just the goal. It occurs to me that this practice comes from the world of business. When a blockbuster company is “analyzed,” the analysts don’t put the CEO on a couch and ask him how he feels. They look at three important numbers: 1) how many sales were made this year? 2) how many more sales are projected in the coming year? 3) how will the company grow? This business approach of setting and achieving goals has become such a large part of how we think and talk. But it doesn’t work for me. I know how to do it. I have tried, but I have discovered that as soon as I put my goals on paper, I want to do something else. Or I found that the accomplishments I had picked out of the air really didn’t have much to do with what actually happened. As a result, I would become depressed or angry as a result, thinking that if I didn’t reach my goals, there must be something wrong with me. Or it was someone else’s fault. In my 40s, I was able to lay this approach
aside. Before I continue, let me repeat that in some cases, limited goal–setting works well. When you’re trying to get a degree, or meet a deadline, or getting an important task completed, short–term goals are important. But increasingly I began to find that setting larger goals (what some call “life–goals”) was like building larger prison walls for me; it left me feeling caged and deprived of the things I desired most, things like learning, friends, or an openness to learning about life from different angles.
Rev. Yme Woensdregt I have a different approach to life these days, one which focuses more on the journey than on the goal. I have discovered that while I am on the way to something, I end up noticing and pursuing something else, which ends up helping to define a new contour in my life. Here’s an illustration of what I mean. When I go to the library to look for a particular book, I also like to wander through the stacks. Just so you know I’m not an old fogey, it works the same way when I go online to look for specific information. Like the library, I will spend a few minutes surfing the internet. For some reason, this only works for me when I am seeking specific information or a particular book. In the library or online, I search for a specific book or item I find it, pick it up, or learn it. Then I look around at the larger context. Maybe one of the other Internet search results catches my eye. Perhaps a book lying
close to my targeted book looks interesting. I pick it up or check it out. I would say that more than 50% of the time, I find myself choosing to look at the newly–discovered item rather than the item I thought I wanted. And, then, this newly–discovered item leads me to other items that I wouldn’t have noticed if I just was after my target book or search result. Many of my columns come from this kind of learning. The same holds true with personal relationships. Sometimes I will ask people how they met their partners. Many say it was by chance, or when they were pursuing something else, or even someone else. They just happened to be at a meeting or an event where the other person was present. Or they were interested in one person, and noticed someone else who became more important to them. I tend to interpret one of my favorite Scripture passages from this perspective. Jesus is talking to his followers: “Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25). Jesus was speaking in the context of what it meant to follow him and be his disciple. But it also applies to our basic approach to life. If we do everything we can to try to save our life, by planning it out to the last minute, we end up losing our lives. Our life will slip out of our hands. But when we pay attention to other voices outside ourselves, when we pick up the extra book, or spend some time with an interesting article you never intended to look at, or when we spend time with that person who comes across our path, we can see how our lives open up in ways we never imagined. Yme Woensdregt is pastor at Christ Anglican Church in Cranbrook.

Letters to the Editor
I want to thank Mr. Freestone in Kimberley for that important letter he wrote last week in regards to remembering those that fell and those that have served and are still serving on behalf of freedom. Freedom is not cheap, it’s not easy but it is right. My Grandfather Frederick George Webber served with the Kootenay 54th division in World War I and he also served in World War II. Grampa was an immigrant from England and loved our country so much he volunteered to serve when the call came. I remember as a kid him
telling us some stories, carefully leaving out the brutal parts to protect us as we were quite young. He fought in Vimy Ridge as well as other battles that marked Canada’s place in the world. As Mr. Freestone said, before we get all caught up in the rush and stress of the Christmas season please take one day, and one or two minutes out of your busy day to remember those that made our way of life possible. Also please think of those innocent people that were killed in both wars, especially the men, woman and children slaughtered in the holocaust. They fought and died for them too. Please think of those that
fought and died in the Korean conflict among other wars in the name of freedom. These men and woman laid down their lives for people that they never met so they could live free from oppression and tyranny. So when you do go shopping the malls for the Christmas season, take a backward glance for those gentle heroes that can no longer go to the places you can go. Think of all of the men and women that answered the call for freedom and remember, we are able to do the things we do, say the things we believe even if we do not all agree. That is freedom and that is what they fought and died for. I am so proud to be one of the few direct
ancestors of those that fought in the “great war”. My grampa was one among the bravest people our country has ever had the honor to call citizen. They were called the best generation simply because, they were. I also want to thank and pray for those young men and women that returned and those that did not return from Afghanistan. As well as those that still serve in foreign counties in the name of freedom, you all make me very proud to be a Canadian, as you represent the best of this great country. Thank you and God bless you all. Chris Nomland
The Queen of the Queen’s Hotel
T
JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron he Queen’s Hotel stood on Baker Street in the heart of Cranbrook’s downtown business district for over 60 years; in fact it first stood when there was no heart at all, except, of course, the brave hearts of the sturdy pioneers who travelled across the lonely, barren wastes to settle a strange and savage…START AGAIN! In the final days of March, 1898, months before the railway came through, there were four buildings in Cranbrook aside from those on the Baker homestead: the CPR storehouse, Hilliard’s blacksmith shop, the Cranbrook Hotel and the East Kootenay Hotel, the latter of which stood two blocks - two very empty blocks - away from all the others, near the corner of what would become 10th Avenue and Baker Street. There were five women in town at the time and one of them, Mrs. Mary Hannah Donahue, age approximately 45, was the lone proprietress of the East Kootenay Hotel and a local property owner of note. To say that she was an astute, determined, independent woman would be pretty much on the mark. She was certainly the first businesswoman in the town and would remain so for many years. Mrs. Donahue came to Cranbrook by way of Golden and the North Star Landing on the Kootenay River near Fort Steele, where she opened her first boarding house a year or so previously. Determining the nearly vacant townsite of Cranbrook to be on the cusp of rapid growth, she purchased numerous city lots and erected a small hotel on a piece of ground that seemed a

long way off from the site of the CPR rail yard. Her ad, one of the first and few in the March, 1898, Herald newspaper read, “East Kootenay Hotel – Mrs. Mary Donahue, Proprietor: Cooking in Home Style, Warm Rooms and Comfortable Beds. No pains spared to make everything pleasant for visitors.” And that was, indeed, the tone of the hotel for years to come. As the town of Cranbrook rapidly grew, Mrs. Donahue continued both improving her hotel and gradually relinquishing control. By July, a two-storey addition to the east side of the hotel was underway which added over a dozen new rooms, office space and a bar. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Donahue passed the management of the hotel over to Oliver Burge and Frank McQuinston, who immediately ensured an ample supply of good cigars and liquors on site. By December, 1898, the town boasted a population of 1200 people and five hotels with the East Kootenay Hotel continuing to enjoy an excellent reputation and steady clientele. Management of the hotel passed from the hands of Burge and McQuinston to T.T. Richards to Hugh Cameron in the space of months at which point Mrs. Donahue attempted to sell the building following another round of renovations and the securing of a public liquor license for the bar. A series of managers followed with Robert Shaw, Peter Matheson, A. McPeak, Alexander Chenette, George Gougeon, J. Netterfield, N.P. Molander and Gus Andeen taking charge in the space of the next seven years, during which time the name was changed to the Queen’s Hotel, and another two-storey 10’ x 18’ addition was added. Although Mrs. Donahue was by now living primarily in Calgary she still visited on occasion to see old friends and attend to her local business interests. The hotel continued to undergo renovations and improve-

ments including one of the earliest metal roofs in the city added in 1909 by local carpenter and undertaker W.R. Beatty. Local entrepreneur Nils Hanson, a good friend and business partner of Mrs. Donahue announced yet another addition to the hotel in1910. The lean-to kitchen at the rear was replaced which, in conjunction with opening up the top story, added another 13 rooms. It was during this construction that contractors Christian and Jones set a somewhat controversial local precedent by allowing workers a half holiday on Saturday afternoons. The entire façade of the original building – or rather, what there was of the original building - was remodeled and plate glass windows added. The construction next door (the corner of 10th and Baker) of the three-storey, brick, Hanson Block in 1911, which later became the Norbury Hotel, would likely have taken much of the Queen’s Hotel’s business had not the two buildings been joined via a passageway on the second floor and, in effect, became one unit. Frank Carlson took control of the Queen’s in 1913, passing it on to Teddy Clauson a few years later, then to
Benson and Veeburg, Gunnar Swanson, back to Clauson, over to Dencoe, Shypitka, Lynch and Skene and finally on to Jack Dowart, who was in possession during the early morning hours of May 17, 1959, when Norbury Hotel proprietors Mr. and Mrs. Harry Walkley awoke to discover the ground floor filled with smoke. Firefighters were on the scene directly and both hotels were safely evacuated. Within no time both the Queen’s and Norbury Hotels were a raging inferno of flames, one of the city’s most notable conflagrations. Both building were completely razed as firefighters, using one-and-a-half miles of hose, worked well into the morning to save the downtown core. Heat from the blaze shattered the windows of buildings across the street and melted the face of the post office clock facing the blaze. All that remained was the large safe of the Norbury Hotel which was incorporated into the Phoenix building which was constructed on the spot of the Norbury Hotel in 1961. Mary Donahue died in Calgary in December, 1934.

Dymacek adjusting to Western Hockey League life Czech import hoping to build upon recent success as Kootenay Ice visit Calgary Hitmen Friday night
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Slowly but surely, Roman Dymacek is finding his way with the Kootenay Ice. Overcoming a serious language barrier is just one of the challenges faced by the 18-yearold native of Hodonin, Czech Republic, but it isn’t keeping him from adapting to life in North America and the Western Hockey League. Dymacek came to the Ice via the 2015 CHL Import Draft -- selected in the first round, 35th overall. Since arriving in Cranbrook in August, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound winger has been adapting to life in North America, listing meals and climate as just two of the other serious differences he’s encountered since flying across the Atlantic Ocean. One of the first challenges the smiley Czech has been faced with is learning to communicate with his coaches and teammates, having never spoken English prior to arriving in Canada. Take it from Slovakian defenceman Mario Grman, who went through the exact same scenario last season when he joined the Red Deer Rebels. “My first challenge was language,” Grman said Thursday. “My first year, when I came here, I didn’t speak English -same as Roman. I know how he is feeling right now. But I try to help him with what I know.”

Dymacek is enrolled in English classes at College of the Rockies, but he still has a ways to go before he can fully speak and understand the new language in conversation. Thursday afternoon prior to practice at Western Financial Place, the glory of Google Translate allowed Dymacek to field questions and respond in his native tongue. His responses from here on are paraphrased as translated. Off the ice, Dymacek is enjoying his English lessons at the college, using time outside of class to walk and speak English with “good Chinese and Japanese girls.” On the ice, he finds the hockey in Canada to be much better than back home in his native Czech Republic. Here, he describes the game as more technical because of the smaller ice surface. Back home, hockey features more passing because of a
wider ice surface. “Hockey here is much different than in Europe,” Grman said, backing up Dymacek’s account. “Everything here is faster, stronger.” Adjusting to the North American game hasn’t come easily for Dymacek, but he’s working in the right direction, according to Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce. “He’s progressed, that’s for sure,” Pierce said. “It’s a big change for him. A lot of his game is geared towards offense. Teaching him the other parts of the game has been our focus and he’s showing growth in it. But it’s tough with the language barrier, culture barrier and other things. “Considering all of it, he’s shown some real positive signs.” Hints of Dymacek’s offensive prowess have been speckled throughout the 2015-16 WHL season, highlighted by
Astros’ OF Rasmus reportedly accepts qualifying offer Kristie Rieken Associated Press
HOUSTON - A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press outfielder Colby Rasmus has accepted the Houston Astros’ one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer, the first free agent to agree to such a deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team hasn’t announced the move.
All 34 qualifying offers were turned down in the first three years of baseball’s current collective bargaining agreement. When a player rejects the deal in order to test the market, his former team receives an additional high selection in the June draft. There were 20 qualifying offers made to free agents this year. The deadline to accept or reject is Friday at 5 p.m.
EST. The 29-year-old Rasmus hit .238 with a career-high 25 home runs and 61 RBIs in his first season with the Astros. He had four homers in six post-season games, including one in the AL wild-card game against the Yankees. Rasmus is a career .245 hitter in seven major league seasons. The deal was first reported by Fox Sports.

Forward Roman Dymacek, pictured during practice at Western Financial Place Thursday afternoon, is adjusting to life in North America and the Western Hockey League with the Kootenay Ice. the electric goal he scored Saturday night against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. But the offensive numbers haven’t been easy to come by for the Czech import as he’s only managed two goals and three points in 19 games. “I try to help him with the use of video and everyone kind of understands the universal language of drawing pictures in hockey,” Pierce said. “He gets that. His teammates and linemates have been good walking him through stuff. “To him, if he doesn’t score a goal, he feels like he didn’t have a good game. But he does a lot
of other things well. “We’re trying to get him to understand there’s a lot more we’re asking for him to do than just produce offense.” Dymacek doesn’t like losing and when asked about what he wants to achieve this season, he wants nothing more than to extend the Kootenay Ice record of 17 consecutive playoff appearances. Though they come from different countries, their first languages are similar enough and as a result Grman has acted as translator for Dymacek throughout the season, helping him discuss on-ice systems with the coaching staff in an effort to help further that playoff mark.

age last season, helping the Blue Jays to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1993. He had 41 homers in the regular season and led the league in runs scored (122) and runs batted in (123). Donaldson is the first Blue Jays third baseman to win a Silver Slugger Award since Kelly Gruber won one in 1990.
“He is much better than his first day here,” Grman said of Dymacek. “It’s hard speaking for him, but I think he understands more than before. “He had some points the last few nights. It’s starting. He needs time and he’s going to be good.” Dymacek hopes to continue producing offensively and coach Pierce hopes to see his crafty Czech forward continue to develop his all-around game. The next test for Dymacek and the Kootenay Ice (4-13-2-0) comes Friday night as they travel to Calgary to face the Hitmen (9-100-1) at Scotiabank Saddledome. From there,
they head south to visit the Medicine Hat Tigers Saturday night. “We’ve talked about the importance of these divisional match ups,” Pierce said. “It was disappointing last weekend. I thought we should have had four points and we only end up with the two. These ones are real big. “[The Hitmen] are a tough team to play at home. We’ve got to find a way to stop being satisfied with some of these little moral victories of being in games. We’re putting ourselves in positions, on a nightly basis, to win hockey games and yet not winning them every time. That’s where we’ve got to find the next level.”
Braves trade SS Simmons Greg Beacham Associated Press
ANAHEIM, Calif. The Atlanta Braves have traded shortstop Andrelton Simmons to the L.A. Angels for shortstop Erick Aybar and pitching prospects Sean Newcomb and Chris Ellis. The Braves also get $2.5 million, while the Angels get minor league catcher Jose Briceno in the trade. Simmons is arguably the best defensive shortstop in baseball, winning
the Gold Glove in 2013 and 2014. He was named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, offsetting his mediocre offensive skills with spectacular work in the field. Aybar has been the Angels’ starting shortstop since 2008 and key in Anaheim for a decade, making the AL All-Star team in 2014. He has been dependable in the field and at the plate, but will be a free agent next winter.

OTTAWA - Andrew Hammond made 33 saves and the Ottawa Senators won their first game in regulation on home ice by downing the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Thursday. Chris Wideman, Bobby Ryan and Erik Karlsson scored for the Senators (8-5-3), who snapped a two-game
losing streak with the victory. Sven Baertschi and Alexander Edler scored for the Canucks (7-5-5), who were playing the fourth of a seven-game road trip (1-2-1). Ryan Miller faced 25 shots. This was the first of a five-game homestand for the Senators, who improved to 3-3-2 on home ice. Their first two wins came by way of the

With Ottawa leading 3-1, Edler scored on the power play with 23.9 seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game. The Senators were outshot 19-8 in the second period, but came

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Be spontaneous, and make choices accordingly. You have the ability to come up with the correct response or gain the traction you desire. You could be a bit sensitive if you overthink a situation. Your responses attract many people. Tonight: TGIF! Treat a friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Relate to others directly; they will appreciate the eye contact, the caring and the attention. You could voice a complaint, but it probably will be a while before the other party really registers what you have said. Tonight: With a favorite person, christening the weekend. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Others will make an effort beyond the call of duty. Smile and get into weekend mode as soon as you can. You will be very happy to let go of problems and join a friend or loved one early. Tonight: Let someone else choose, so you can go along for the ride.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might have a lot to do, especially as someone could drop some errands or extra responsibilities on you. You’ll want to say “no,” but you probably won’t. Don’t make this gracious attitude a regular happening, for your own sake. Tonight: Head home early. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You have a sense of the good life, more than many other signs do. Today it kicks in, which allows you as well those around you to really get into the moment. You could have a great time at work, on the bus or wherever. It is a question of attitude. Tonight: Opt for more passion. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others have expectations that involve your home and domestic life. You might want to take off and do what you want before you have to get back. Tension is high, and tempers could flare. You’ll want to defer to others or eliminate this situation. Tonight: It is your call. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
Your ability to have a conversation and get to the bottom of a disagreement will be important. Nevertheless, you’ll need the other party to want a resolution as well, rather than having his or her way. You know what you want. Why not make it so? Tonight: Out and about. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Watch what is happening within your immediate circle, and take your cue from a friend. You might not be aware of how much frustration you seem to be sitting on. The unexpected plays a big role in what goes on. Understand where others stand. Tonight: Play the night away. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be beaming from ear to ear and not even realize it! Others seek you out, as they have not seen you like this for a while. You’ll need to stay anchored when dealing with a family member who can be very emotional. Tonight: Put your best foot forward. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have an opinion that others might not want to hear,
especially a superior or older relative. It probably would be a good idea to avoid a collision by saying nothing. Keep communication flowing, even if you have to stay quiet. Tonight: Try a new night spot. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Remain expressive of your feelings. Let friends know where you are coming from. A partner will appreciate some insight. Your fun nature comes out. Don’t push a loved one too hard, as he or she could have a strong reaction. Tonight: Enjoy your friends. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will feel pressured to show your best side. You could be left holding the bag at work. Are you ready for that? Perhaps you are frustrated that you can’t join your friends more quickly. A partner seems to want your time and attention. Tonight: A must appearance. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am in a sorority and proudly wear my Greek letters. However, when I go outside the campus, I receive a lot of negative feedback. People assume things about me that are not true, and this can be very hurtful. They think I haze, hang out promiscuously with frat boys, drink, do drugs and care only about getting a “Mrs.” degree. Let me tell you, this is not what Greek life is about. I, as well as a few of my sorority sisters and fraternity cousins, am on a full-ride scholarship and must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average or better. We take random drug tests to make sure our organization is clean. We have strict rules when it comes to being with members of the opposite sex, and we cannot be seen with alcohol. My sorority is incredibly multicultural with several foreign students, one girl in a wheelchair, one with severe medical conditions and young women from all races and walks of life. We consider hazing to be domestic violence, and our philanthropy is domestic violence awareness. We raise thousands of dollars for abuse victims every semester. We pay for our badge, our shirts, our events, our formal dances, our recruitment expenses, our insurance and our dues, which are used for scholarships for deserving young women. Greek life is not what the movies or media make it out to be. It teaches us valuable life lessons. We meet people we can rely on and forge bonds that last a lifetime. My sisters and I are strong women. -- Alpha Chi Omega in Texas Dear Texas: We agree that sororities get a bad rap. Movies and TV shows often portray even savvy sorority girls as angling solely for the right guy or the right clothes. This may make for good drama, but it simply isn’t truthful. Sororities have always provided lifetime friendships, and these days, most sorority members do volunteer and charity work, as well. They are filled with strong, smart women. Dear Annie: I live in an area of the Midwest that has frequent tornado warnings. I have a weather radio, and I take the warnings seriously -- especially when they announce a tornado warning for my county. I have friends, however, who think that because the local tornado siren has not gone off that there is nothing to worry about. They say I am overreacting. It is my understanding that a tornado can touch down without warning and also that the tornadoes are harder to spot at night. Your thoughts? -- Rather Be Safe Than Sorry Dear Rather: We’re with you. Tornadoes can develop so quickly that sometimes there isn’t much warning. By the time a siren sounds, it might be too late to get to a safe place. When you hear that there is a tornado watch, it means you should be alert to the possibility of a funnel. If the county issues a tornado warning, it means a tornado has been sighted in the area and you should seek shelter. Anyone who wants more information about storm preparedness can check online at ready.gov/tornadoes. Top Ten Reasons to Advertise in a Newspaper 1. Advertise to Reach New Customers. Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.
2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.
3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back.

A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.
4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.
5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.
6. Advertise to Generate Traffic. Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.
7. Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.
8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate. Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.
9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale.

Venus’ twin? Earth-size planet orbiting small nearby star is hot Marcia Dunn ASSOCIATED PRESS
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - There’s a new rocky Earth-size planet on our galactic block,
and it’s a sizzler. Astrophysicists on Wednesday revealed the newfound world, GJ 1132b, named after the small nearby star that it
orbits. Even though the mercury can hit 450 degrees at this planet, it’s cool enough to have a thick Venus-like atmo-
sphere. Lucky for scientists, it’s close enough to find out. Planet GJ 1132b is just 39 light-years away, within the atmospheric
study range of the Hubble Space Telescope. Given that a single lightyear represents 5.87 trillion miles - the distance light can travel in a year
- this planet is about 230 trillion miles away. A team led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Zachory Berta-Thompson dis-

covered the planet in May, using telescopes in Chile. He and his colleagues reported their findings Wednesday in the journal Nature. While the scientists say the planet is too hot for life, it’s still much cooler than the rocky fireballs known to orbit stars beyond our solar system. The official term for a planet outside our solar system is exoplanet. “If we find this pretty hot planet has managed to hang onto its atmosphere over the billions of years it’s been around, that bodes well for the long-term goal of studying cooler planets that could have life,” Berta-Thompson said in a statement. B e r t a -T h o m p s o n and the others estimate that GJ 1132b has a diameter of about 9,200 miles, slightly bigger than Earth. Its mass, however, is thought to be 60 per cent greater than Earth’s. Its home star - GJ 1132 - is a red dwarf one-fifth the size of our sun. The planet circles every 1.6 days from just 1.4 million miles out, thus the heat wave. A slight dip in the starlight every 1.6 days was the giveaway for the observing team. “Our ultimate goal is to find a twin Earth,” said astronomer David Charbonneau of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, one of the authors, “but along the way we’ve found a twin Venus.” The astronomers are seeking follow-up observations from Hubble and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The James Webb Space Telescope, due to launch in 2018, and other future craft could provide even more details. In a companion article in Nature, the University of Maryland’s Drake Deming points out astronomers will be able to study GJ 1132b with “unprecedented fidelity” given its proximity and also the small size of its star, which should minimize light interference with the measurements. That, in large part, makes it in his words “arguably the most important planet ever found outside the solar system.” He was not involved with the study. It’s unknown, for now, whether this star system harbours other planets.
