Westporte land up for discussion SUSAN QUINN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The City of Port Alberni will hold a meeting to discuss
Need a cargo box for your ATV?
the future of a 68-acre plot of city-owned land in Westporte, this Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015 from 6–8 p.m. at Echo Centre in the Dogwood Room. Duane Flory, who has lived in the Mary Street flood plain at Westporte since 1974,
is concerned any large development will ultimately cause flooding. “They want to tear it down and put in houses. We’re afraid they’re going to put more drainage in Lugrin Creek and flood us,” Flory said.
“We want some greenspace. There’s deer and bear and birds in there like you wouldn’t believe.” Large scale development of the area would mean “there wouldn’t be any wildlife habitat left,” he said. The city’s announcement of the public meeting did not specify plans for the 68 acres; only an interest in discussing “possible” development with neighbours.

BCIT Conductor Training is taking place on the tracks between Argyle St. and Smith Rd.
Last March the community said no to a request from Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens seniors’ facility to lease them land where a park is presently located in south Westporte in order for the seniors’ place to expand. One of the options presented for relocating the park had been an undeveloped area on the north side of the Westporte neighbourhood. editor@albernivalleynews.com
Logging co. blasting across Alberni Inlet In the coming days, Island Timberlands will begin upgrading their Shoemaker Bay (opposite side of the Alberni Inlet) log sort by paving the dirt deck as well as performing other improvements. The work is being completed by local contractors and will require some blasting
over the next few weeks, according to a notice from Island Timberlands. This is not an expansion of their log sort but an improvement to already existing infrastructure which the company says will enhance environmental protections.
Trains will be operating between 6am - 8pm

BC food product sales set record BLACK PRESS
B.C.’s farm and food product industry is growing, even though the number of farmers isn’t. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick hosted farmers and food producers at the B.C. legislature Tuesday to
mark B.C. Agrifoods Day and announce that sales of B.C. food products set a record of $12.3 billion in 2014. That’s up 5.9 per cent from the previous year, which was up 3.5 per cent from 2012. “Local people are buying local products, that’s a big part,” Letnick
said in an interview. “Our exports are increasing. We’ve had a record year, just under $3 billion in exports.” Two thirds of B.C. export sales go to the U.S. China is second with $264 million in sales, and Japan bought $199 million worth in 2014.
“Our number one agri-food product continues to be dairy,” Letnick said. “Number 2 is farmed salmon, so that might be news to a few people.” With family farms and new farmers, is B.C.’s farm base growing? “We’re holding our own,” Letnick said.

October 26th, 2015 – A good man died today – GORDON DOUGLAS BRAITHWAITE. He was born April 3, 1928, in Onaway, Alberta, and spent his first twelve years in the Volmer - St.Albert area before the family relocated to Vancouver Island. Gordie’s first two school years in BC were spent living with relatives in Victoria as his family had moved to a logging facility up Mt. Tuam, Saltspring Island, and then to Port Renfrew - where there was limited schooling. Gordie had just turned 14 when he left school and started his ‘career in the bush’ as a ‘logger’ – a career he loved. Over the years he worked as a Sparkchaser (for the summer – when he was 13) a Whistle Punk, Chokerman, Chaser, Rigging Slinger, Faller, Second Loader, Head Loader, Hooktender, Fire Warden, Woods Foreman and ending as General Foreman with MacMillan-Bloedel until his retirement at the age of 62. When he was 16 he moved with his family to the Duncan area where he met and, in May, 1949, married Elsie Lloyd - and where their 7 children (five girls and two boys) were born. In 1952 he started working at Shawnigan Division for MacMillan-Bloedell - eventually becoming Woods Foreman – a position he also filled when he transferred to Copper Canyon Division in 1967. In 1970, when he became General Foreman of MB’s Kennedy Division, the family moved to Ucluelet. In 1973 they moved to Port Alberni when he became General Foreman at Franklin River Division – the largest logging camp in the world. In 1978, he transferred to Sproat Lake Division (a shorter drive from home) and stayed there until his retirement in April, 1990 – when he and Elsie moved to the Lighthouse area, north of Qualicum Beach. Gordie was always willing to accept executive positions for all the activities he and his family were involved with ‌ church, Little League, basketball, grass hockey, PTA, youth groups, Loyal Order of Moose and recently the Qualicum Horne Lake Water Board. He loved his fishing and he loved participating in sports – Softball, Badminton, Bowling, Ice Curling and, for the past 24 years, curling with the Lighthouse Floor Curlers. He was always very proud of his children – Kerrie & Wim Jellema; Judy Hill; Shannon and Bill Van Wormer; Lyle & Marilyn Braithwaite; Faye & Ken Davidson, Erin & John Keizer; and Daryl & Annie Braithwaite – his 24 grandchildren, and their spouses, and his 36 great grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed the recent family reunion when 91 of us were able to take part in a four day ‘get-together’. Talk about being ‘blessed’. Formerly with the United Church Gordie has been a member, since July 1989, of the Cedar Grove Reformed Church, in Port Alberni, and, like Elsie and his family, these good friends will really miss him – as will his sister, Margaret Baird, Cobble Hill, B.C., his sister-in-law Birnie Braithwaite, Duncan, B.C., and many nieces and nephews and their families.. Sadly, in 1985, Gordie was predeceased by his eldest Grandson, Lloyd Hill, aged 15. Predeceased also by his parents, George and Ellen Braithwaite, and two older brothers, Lloyd and Wesley Braithwaite. Yes, we will all definitely miss ‘Gordie’, ‘Uncle’, ‘Dad’, ‘Grandpa’ or ‘Greatpa’ but this kind, loving man will certainly never be forgotten. Many thanks to the North Island Care Givers and Palliative Care Nurses for their excellent care and concern for Gordie over the past two months. A memorial service will be held, at Arrowsmith Baptist Church, 4283 Glenside Rd., Port Alberni, B.C., at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 13th, 2015.

Combat irritability with these helpful tips
Art collector on your Christmas list?
irritable mood can release negativity and stress-inducing vibes that negatively impact an entire office, household, or classroom. Feeling irritable means feeling on edge, grumpy, cranky, and sour. A person’s tolerance is lower and the minor frustrations that are usually shrugged off are bothersome. The reactions to irritants are likely to be much

rritability is something all people experience. What sets it apart from other emotional states is the extent to which it pollutes the emotional atmosphere. Irritability is the carbon monoxide of emotional pollutants. One person’s

more aggressive than usual, leading to a person to snap, bark and chastise others. When the boss is irritable, word quickly spreads around the office to stay out of the way. When mom or dad comes home from work in an irritable state, it takes all of a few minutes for the kids to exchange knowing glances and quietly withdraw into their rooms (or put on the earphones).
Irritability is no treat for the person experiencing it, either. Stress hormones surge into action and with the same fight-orflight mentality as the caveman had when they were on bearwatch duty at their cave entrance. The slightest movement or noise can cause jitteriness and people to feel they are under attack, with nary a threat in sight. Most people would

The best way to reduce irritability is to figure out where it is coming from— and then address it. Identify when the irritable feelings first started and consider what may have set them off. It is also important to remember that while the reactions might feel complex at the moment, the issue that triggered them might be simple. 2. Reduce caffeine and alcohol
Too much caffeine during the day and too much alcohol at night are frequent sources of irritability for many people. So consider cutting back. 3. Consider the little things
Often people dismiss considering things that shouldn’t make them irritable even if they actually do. For example, a competitive person might become
4. Be compassionate
Being compassionate towards oneself can be a powerful way to calm churning emotions. Acknowledge the irritable feelings and how unpleasant they are. Then imagine getting a hug from a caring someone. Use that compassion and consider how a person with an irritated mood affects others and how important it is to not take it out on them. 5. Take perspective
People usually feel irritable about small-to-medium size annoyances—the kind not remembered in a few days or weeks. Take a few minutes and think about of the larger picture. Continued / A22

LOST AND FOUND
FLEMING, Anne passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Nov. 7, 2015, at the age of 65, with family by her side. This was following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer for nearly two and a half years. She is survived by her loving husband Glen; daughter Robyn (Mike), sons Brett and Bo (Alanna); grandchildren Cory, Justin (Leslie), Nathan, Mia and Keaton; great-grandchildren Haylie and Maria; father Wallace; mother June; siblings Leo (Susan), Bruce (Elnora), Susan, Tracy (Leonard), and Cody; nieces and nephews Shannon, Tiffany, Brittany, Rebekah, Jennifer, Nic, Ashley and Jessica; as well as numerous extended family members. Anne was born in Edmonton, but grew up and went to school in Calgary, Nelson and Surrey. She lived in B.C. on the mainland for many years as an adult, moved to Qualicum Beach (Vancouver Island) 1981, then settled in Port Alberni in 1983. She soon fell in love with the Alberni Valley and a few years later opened Flandangles Kitchen and Gifts store. This became her pride and joy and has been in operation for 27 years. Not only was she a successful business owner, she was strongly committed to the community through organizations such as Salmon Fest, Kinettes, Sorority and the Women’s Business Network, to name just a few. She enjoyed spending time on ‘her’ island on Sproat Lake, traveling, camping and, of course, shopping. She got to many places on her bucket list over the last year or so, including: Portugal (a favourite), France, England, Mexico, Newfoundland, PEI and Nova Scotia. She attended her grandson’s wedding in New Brunswick, visited her Aunt Rosemary in Montreal, stayed in old Quebec City, and earlier this year flew to Alberta to see longtime friend Lorraine and to visit her father. When not running her store, Anne loved being with her family most of all. She was strong-willed, competitive, feisty, fully involved and ever generous. She loved playing (and winning) cribbage, hearts, scrabble, bananagrams and solitaire whenever she could. A celebration of Anne’s life will be held sometime in the spring of 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated for Ty Watson House, 3088 – 3rd Ave, Port Alberni, BC, V9Y2A5 and/or the BC Cancer Foundation, 686 Broadway #150, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1G1. Our sincerest gratitude goes to Wendy Johnsen and Colleen for going above and beyond with Anne’s medical care at home.
We hoped we had more time, but it was not to be. She will be greatly missed but always remembered.
Margaret Brenda Willis
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother, and friend Margaret Brenda Willis. Brenda passed away in Echo Village on November 4, 2015, at the age of 80. Predeceased by loving husband Edward Willis; parents Frank and Winnifred; and sister Merla Mowat. Brenda is survived by children Sharon (Brian), Lynda, and Leonard; grandchildren Jaeden, Chantal, Garret, and Alexis; sisters Leola (Henry) and Dola; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Brenda’s pride and joy in her life were her children, and later, her grandchildren. She was a devoted and loving mother that doted on her children throughout their lives. It was her passion to make sure that her family was well loved and cared for. Brenda was a wonderful, supportive, and caring mother that will be greatly missed. Following Brenda’s wishes, a private family service will be taking place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Brenda’s name to the BC Cancer Foundation, 150-686 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1G1.
FRED NORMAN ROBERTS October 4, 1927 - November 6, 2015
With great sadness we announce the passing of our step-father Fred on Friday, November 6, 2015 at his home in Parksville. Fred was born in England then shipped to Vancouver Island at a very young age as a British home child. He lived most of his life in Port Alberni and Parksville. Fred was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth ”Betty” Cyr, step daughter Michelle, and step grandson, Sean. He is survived by his step children, Sharon Keene, Dennis (Jocelyn) Cyr, Rick (Gail) Cyr; step grandchildren, Shannon, Megan, Randy, Mike, Richard, Stewart, Honalee; and great grandchildren, Melissa, Gaige, Brookelynn, Makenzie, Evan, Bryden, Holtby. Fred spent all of his working years as a faller in the logging industry. After his retirement, he kept busy as a handyman and doing yard work. He loved fishing, hunting and was an avid gardener. We are so thankful for the love and care he received during his time at Arrowsmith Lodge. In keeping with Fred’s wishes there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Fred’s memory with a donation in his name to the Arrowsmith Lodge Society Foundation, 266 Moilliet Street, Parksville BC V9P 1M9. opposite approach works as well. Find a quiet place to think things through, or to disengage from the commotion and activity. Irritability can be the mind’s way of alerting a person to needing a break, so take one. Listen to music, do some stretching or yoga, meditate, or take a bubble bath. When done, take a deep breath and prepare to re-engage so the system isn’t shocked back into irritability upon re-entry into the fray. Irritability is treatable and speaking with your doctor (GP), medical health professional or a therapist/counsellor might also be helpful.. He then went to work for a local roofer as an apprentice and then worked for Hayes Roofing and was with them for 16 years before starting out on his own with Vanschie Roofing a company that is still in business. As Vanschie said, “Once I started my own business I never looked back.” Vanschie hired his son Rick to work with him 30 years ago and he also has an employee Tom Pearce who has been with
