Trudeau summons premiers for greenhouse gas talks By Tom Fletcher Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called a meeting with premiers in Ottawa to update the country’s position on greenhouse gas reductions before they jet to Paris for the latest United Nations climate summit in

top climate scientists for the first ministers and my own cabinet, to be followed by a working dinner with the premiers, to exactly discuss the kind of strong and cohesive message we will be delivering as Canadians in Paris at the very important

This year’s influenza vaccine is available at doctors’ offices, public health clinics and pharmacies across B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the main flu season runs from late November through to next April, and cases of H3N2 influenza are already showing up. That strain affects mainly older people, while influenza B is expected to show up by February and spread among children. The vaccine is is free for children between six months and five years, seniors aged 65 and older, pregnant women, aboriginal

people and those with chronic health conditions, as well as caregivers and others who expect to be in close contact with higher-risk groups. About 3,500 people die in Canada each winter from influenza and its complications, with hospital and residential care patients the most vulnerable. Kendall said influenza causes more deaths than all other vaccinepreventable illnesses combined. This year’s vaccine is expected to provide 40 to 60 per cent protection against H3N2 and 65 per cent protection against

various strains of influenza B. “The annual flu vaccine is still the best tool we have to protect against getting the flu,” said Dr. Charles Webb, president of the Doctors of B.C. “Combined with regular hand washing, you are also protecting those around you who may be more vulnerable to serious flu complications.” To find the nearest flu shot clinic, call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 or use the online influenza clinic finder at www.immunizebc. ca/clinics/flu.

Over the past few weeks, residents and business owners may have noticed some slight discolouration to fixtures and sinks in their homes and businesses due to the drinking water. “Some residents have noticed and asked us about such issues as: white spotting on utensils, white film in sinks and basins and dishwasher strainers, some brown or black staining on fixtures – things like that,” says Chris Zettel,

Communications Officer with the City of Cranbrook. “These are all normal occurrences associated with groundwater.” In the spring of 2015, the City conducted some equipment retrofit work on one of the three deep wells in the community. This particular well, located at the Cranbrook Fire Hall on 2nd Street South has been in operation off and on since the spring. However, with the lower overall water

Lithium - the most misunderstood mineral

13.8 billion years ago lithium was one of three minerals formed during the big bang (the other two were hydrogen and helium). Today, lithium is found all throughout our atmosphere including basalt rock, water, mineral springs and, believe it or not historically, in 7-up. In fact, 7-up was named after the atomic mass of lithium (which is 7) and the “up” in 7-up came from the unique ability of lithium to support the brain and improve mood. Today, we don’t think of lithium as an essential mineral found throughout the body that is in the same family as sodium and potassium. More commonly, if batteries don’t come to mind first, we think of lithium as a dangerous drug used for treating severe mental illness. While it is true that high doses of lithium can severely damage the kidneys and harm the thyroid, lower doses of lithium - doses closer to the trace amounts found in the water you drink every day - provide a range of health benefits with complete safety. Several large scales studies have shown that violent crime and suicide are lower in areas with higher levels of lithium in the drinking water compared with areas that have lower lithium levels. Lithium can help to control gout, ease the discomfort of a rash caused by seborrheic dermatitis, manage Fibromyalgia and it has some serious brain-boosting

effects to boot. According to nutritional expert Jonathan Wright, MD, lithium is an anti-aging nutrient for the brain that can protect and grow brain cells. Aside from boosting brain mass, lithium can protect your brain from the toxic chemical stress of daily life. There is strong evidence that low dose lithium will slow the progression of serious degenerative problems including Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s. Researchers have recently suggested that lithium should be used in conjunction with any medicine being used to treat depression, anxiety or for any other mood altering reason since lithium will protect the brain against unwanted toxic effects of the medication. Dr. Wright goes further saying that lithium can protect the brain if you drink alcohol, smoke or use any other mood altering substance. Low dose lithium can also be safely used in children who are anxious, depressed or have ADHD. The doses of lithium we are talking about here are small, in the range of 1 to 20 mg of lithium orotate daily based on body weight. A good first step is to do a hair mineral analysis to identify if general body levels of lithium. If you decide to give lithium a try it is a good idea to consult a physician knowledgeable in natural medicine as part of your plan.

The guide/outfitter in question (the producer of Jim Shockey’s Big Black Bear Hunts), now has a second DVD out titled “Point-blank Bears,” which is much like the first DVD. A father from Texas brought his two 14-year-old sons (twins). This

brought a nice profit of approximately $30K to the outfitter. The boys shot a big bear each. That’s another 650 pounds of meat left in the bush. It appears that this is condoned by the provincial government because the outfitter puts out a free hunt on a lottery auction style draw and all the money goes to B.C. conservation, which costs the outfitter next to nothing. Your reply would be appreciated. 2) In the Kootenays, there is hundreds of thousands of acres

with old cut blocks with second growth forests in process. The problem is that provincial forestry is neglecting the second growth with a silviculture program, namely thinning these trees out to allow cultured growth. At present these trees are growing right from the edge of a logging road, one and two feet apart, 22 feet hight, throughout the whole block. The Duczek Brothers, known as the Little Shredders, were jointly nominated in the Developing Athlete category as they have competed together all season

and often finished in the top 3 together at events. The pinnacle of their season was standing on the podium at Wake Canada Nationals wearing the gold and silver medal in their division. As they received their Developing Athlete Award at the banquet, they were recognized not only for their competitive results this season, but also their positive promotion of the sport and involvement with their sponsors, Just Liquid Sports, Hyperlite and Boston Pizza Cranbrook/ Golden. All three Cranbrook riders ride and train at Tie Lake near Jaffray. The Awards were handed out at the WSWA AGM and Gala Awards Banquet in Calgary. The Gala celebrated the athletes participating in water sport across Alberta this year in Wakeboard, Waterski and Hydrofoil

and noted the accomplishments of athletes, officials and those who’ve dedicated time and energy to building water sport in Alberta. 2015 WSWA Awards Recipients: • Volunteer of the Year: Sherry Richardson • Developing Athlete of the Year: Ryder and Dagen Duczek • Female Athlete of the Year: Geneva Roach • Male Athlete of the Year: Colden Thompson • Builder of the Year: Jo-Anne Moore • Official of the Year: Jeff Blanchard

Myths & realities:

Do you really know what your kids are up to? ▾ MYTH: Once kids join a gang there’s no hope for them: Reality: Gang members in B.C. come from every socio-economic background and all ethnicities. While racial, ethnic, and gender composition can vary by locality or type of gang, gangs are often as diverse as our communities and many do not restrict who joins as long as they can make money for the gang.

David was born on May 6, 1947 in Eureka, Montana. He enjoyed cooking and gardening and was a very quiet and private man. David loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, trapper and hunter. David is survived by his loving wife Judith, son Eric, grandchildren Orion and Karma, two brothers, three sisters and many relatives and friends. A celebration of David’s life will be held in the spring of 2016. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

OBITUARY

SOMMERFELD: Our beloved father and grandfather, John Sommerfeld, passed away peacefully at the Elk Valley Hospital on November 7, 2015 at the age of 88 years. John was born in Brightholme, SK on May 7, 1927 to parents Edward and Josephine Sommerfeld. John will be dearly missed by his daughters Arlene (Jack) Punk and Phyllis Sommerfeld, grandchildren Ryan, Shayna, and Tyler Punk, brothers Fred and Norman (Maureen), and sisters Agnes, Alice, Edna and Violet as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Agnes, sisters Lillian and Emma, and brothers Leonard and Eddy. John married Agnes Dortman on October 23, 1953. The couple lived and farmed near Shellbrook, SK where they raised their two daughters. In 1964 they relocated to Riondel, BC where John worked in the Bluebell Mine for 7 years until moving to Elkford, BC in 1971. In Elkford, John worked as a driller with Fording River until his retirement in 1993. After retiring, John threw himself fulltime into his woodworking hobby, making over 200 cedar chests and numerous other small projects before moving to Sparwood in 2005. While living in the Senior’s Villa and later Lilac Terrace, he continued his woodworking in his shop on Jack and Arlene’s acreage. In 2012, John moved to Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie, BC. Unable to physically do any more woodworking, he still dreamed of his lathe and all the projects he could do with the wood from the big, dry tree outside the dining room at the home. He replaced his woodworking with many hours of colouring, which filled his days and kept him happy and content. Cremation was held, and a Memorial Service will be held in the Spring of 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Memories & condolences shared at www.cherishedmemoriesfs.com Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.

OBITUARY

Jerry Ronald Browning February 15, 1938 – November 6, 2015 Jerry was born in Covington, KY to Ben and Margaret (Sutton) Browning; he was the seventh of nine children. After a few years in Kentucky, the family moved to Crafton, PA and then to Kiona, WA so Ben could work on the Manhattan Project facility at Hanford. Outside school hours, Jerry and his brother Larry helped their parents build a motel from the foundations up, which the family operated for many years. He loved yo-yos as a kid and went to the state yo-yo championships; he placed second after the spindle on his yo-yo broke during the Around-The-World manoever. He was athletic and spent many happy hours biking, playing sports, and swimming in the Columbia River. In 1956, he graduated from Columbia High School in Richland, WA. He then attended Washington State University (Pullman), graduating with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering, which was a dual degree in architecture and structural engineering. Shortly after graduation he was in a near-fatal car accident, surviving only because a doctor was in the first car on the scene. After a lengthy recovery, he hitch-hiked around Europe before heading to Hawai'i to look for work. He was hired as a structural engineer at the large architectural firm Wimberly, Whisenand, Allison and Tong. Not long afterwards he was encouraged by Kent Nixon, a close friend from university, to join the firm Fairbanks, Sawyer and Nixon in Cranbrook, BC. So Jerry traded the beaches of the South Pacific for the Canadian Rockies. He was soon made partner. He met his first wife, Heather Cameron, and together they raised a family at Moyie, BC. Kent and Jerry purchased the practice and created Nixon and Browning, Architects and Community Planners. They built a flourishing business specializing in schools, health facilities, commerical and civic buildings for almost every community in the East and West Kootenay and several projects in southern Alberta. Their projects include the College of the Rockies campuses in Cranbrook, East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Cranbrook Public Library, the RDEK building in Cranbrook, new schools in Windermere, Golden, Invermere, Fernie, the Elk Valley, Canal Flats, Revelstoke and Castlegar, and renovations to many others, seniors care homes, drop-in centres, financial institutions, buildings for BC Hydro and Kaiser Resources, municipal offices, recreation complexes and post offices. They successfully completed more than 250 projects. They also operated a copy business and a sawmill in Cranbrook for a short time. Despite his success as an architect, Jerry had a naive and recklessly optimistic side which led him into a long series of speculative side ventures; his charm, charisma, and persuasiveness led other people into these ventures with him. Though he never once stopped believing in eventual success, many relationships with friends and family members were irreparably damaged. His marriage to Heather ended in the 1990s. He moved first to Tonapah, NV and then to Bow Island, AB to be near his brother Larry (wife Dorothy). Together they cared for their elderly father until his death. Jerry was a life-long seeker of spiritual answers and his quest took him in many unusual directions before finally finding the ROC Christian Ministry in Coaldale, which is how he met his wife Margaret. They had been married nearly 11 years at the time of his death. Together, Jerry and Maggie worked as greeters for their church and led the Good Times group for four years. They also nursed Jerry's brother Larry during his illness with ALS. Jerry was devoted to physical fitness. He ran many 10k and 15k races and several marathons. He spent a lot of time strength training and researching nutrition. Jerry loved music, particularly gospel, country and '50s and '60's pop. Johnny Cash and Elvis were two of his favourites. He was a great dancer and a photography enthusiast. He had a distinctive sartorial style, favouring bright colours, cowboy boots, flashy blazers, bolo ties and Hawai'ian or cowboy shirts. He collected belt buckles and model cars. He loved kids and was always up for a game of Frisbee, a wrestle, or some Rummy-O, Monopoly or poker. He was a skilled fly fisher and enjoyed fishing on Kootenay Lake with his good friend Arne Olsen. He was a huge movie buff and watching them was a critical source of comfort during his final months. Some of his favourite memories were of road trips through the US, especially on his BMW touring motorcycle. He loved to laugh. Jerry died eleven months after being diagnosed with ALS. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings Norma Wright, Larry Browning, Pauline Woods, Janet Noga, Phyllis Phelps, Michael Browning and David Gale Browning, niece Patty Wright and nephew Tom Noga. Jerry is survived by his loving and dedicated wife Margaret “Maggie” Browning, his sister Nancy Allen, children Susan “Sioux” Browning and husband John Bradshaw, Steve Browning and wife Leona (Olivia, Liam), Jennifer Browning and husband Richard Baverstock (Jake, Ben), and David Grexton (Tanner, Abby), step-children Susan Kopp and husband Stacey (Alex, Tamara and Ashanti), Mary Blatz and husband George (Zoë, Esther), Ramon Peters and wife Carolyn (Sarah, Elijah), Pete Peters and wife Susanne (Blake, Melissa, Darryl), Lena Derkson and husband Rob (Hannah, Kaleb, David), Danny Peters and wife Wendy (Rachel, Haylie, Travis, Jorja), three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and friends. Jerry's family would like to thank the caregivers at Edith Cavell Care Centre, Dr. David Stewart and his colleagues at the Family Medical Centre, Dr. William Shields, Taber Home Care, the nurses and Palliative Care team (particularly Joy) at Chinook Regional Hospital, Dennis & Rockwell Pollock and their staff, Jane Rivest, Sue Monro and the ALS Society of Alberta, Dr. Soroceanu, Jonathan Davis at Taber RBC, and Joe and Eva Ellan. A memorial service for Jerry was held November 14, 2015 in Coaldale, AB. Messages for the family can be left at www.mbfunerals.com.

New registry for province artists More than one thousand artists signed up for a new BC Artist Registry within a week of its launch last Wednesday by the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture. Adult artists in all disciplines who reside in British Columbia were invited to be counted in the online BC Artist Registry, whether their arts practice is their full-time or parttime career, or an avocational pursuit. “The BC Artist Registry is based on examples in Saskatchewan and other regions,” according to Alliance executive director Rob Gloor, “and will help to advance the province’s cultural sector through quality research and advocacy. “The long term goal is to build on basic informational tools, such as the census, to better understand the situation of artists in British Columbia,” continued Gloor. ”For example, according to Statistics Canada,

A division of

there are 25,000 artists in BC, but that number only includes those whose primary source of income is their art. If their primary income is something else, such as teaching, the census does not count them as artists. Through the BC Artist Registry, we will have a platform to learn more about all artists in our province, regardless of how much their art contributes to their income.” T h r o u g h collaboration with cultural associations, funders, arts service providers, and municipalities to promote participation through their networks, the Alliance and its partners can ensure that artists from all artistic disciplines and all regions across the province have the opportunity to be counted. Then, when a partner organization wishes to conduct a survey or consult with artists, the Alliance will have the mechanism to invite a ready group of participants through

the BC Artist Registry. The Registry will be an important tool for reaching artists directly, inviting their participation in surveys and other types of consultation. The BC Artist Registry uses a simple online form recording an artist’s name, contact information, and field(s) of artistic discipline. Joining the Registry is free, and the personal information remains private and confidential. From time to time, artists on the Registry will be invited to participate in more detailed surveys or other consultations. The Registry will be open for ongoing registration with no deadline, to ensure a growing resource for meaningful statistics and research in our province’s cultural sector. Artists from all disciplines are invited to add their names and be counted. It’s simple: visit allianceforarts. com/bc-artist-registry and complete the short online form.

Participation in the registry is free and your personal information is confidential. Get the word out. Invite those in your network to participate and be counted by sharing the link allianceforarts.com/ bc-artist-registry and spread the word on social media using the hashtag #BCartistregistry. ABOUT THE ALLIANCE The Alliance for Arts + Culture is BC’s leading arts information aggregator and a resource to the arts, culture and heritage community. Since 1986 we have advocated for our sector by monitoring public policy, synthesizing issues for our members, providing support, services and professional development, and representing the interests of artists and cultural workers. Local woman dedicated to mission of His Hope Uganda

Diana, pictured on the right, shares some joy while being examined. by Gary Toyota Transformation. Since its quiet beginning in 2009, the work of His Hope Uganda has been transforming lives, both in East Africa and Canada. Kimi Toyota, having grown up in Cranbrook and graduated from Mt. Baker, left a comfortable life of employment in Calgary’s Children’s Hospital as well as snowboarding, movies and enjoying the typical pursuits of a 23 year old. In 2007, she and a friend decided to visit Uganda after seeing a heart breaking movie about child soldiers. After a quick 2 weeks working with 9 children in a Home in Jinja, Uganda, she returned for a memorable 7 month stay. Upon her return to Canada, the Home suddenly closed due to corruption and the 9 children who Kimi now called family were abruptly sent back to their scattered villages. Her pursuit now became one of getting a few children back into school. In 2009, Kimi began “His Hope Uganda”, a sponsorship program to provide education to needy children and with her initial ‘family’ of 8, the work of transformation began. By the end of that first year, the number had grown to 47, sponsored mostly by

The ministry has been transforming since its inception with each year bringing new opportunities. In 2010, Kimi noticed that the home of one the children who was constantly sick was in hazardous shape

with one of its mud, stick and dung walls periodically falling in, a leaky roof, mold and rats. She and her staff of 3 Ugandans decided to build a new home of brick with a metal roof. So began an endeavor that has now replaced

BEING DIFFERENT ALL BY ITSELF ISN’T BETTER. BUT THE DIFFERENCES ENGINEERED INTO A SUBARU ARE. Subaru has always gone its own way. It’s the only affordable car brand that offers a Boxer engine in every model, and the Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is widely seen as the gold standard in traction. Young people covet them for their rally-car pedigree, and everyone else adores them for their safety, durability and no-nonsense utility. We never implore people to buy a Subaru. We invite them to try a Subaru, and let the differences speak for themselves. Is a Subaru right for you?

In 2013, hospital visits were introduced. Teams would visit the Children’s Hospital, feed close to 500 and spend time to pray with each of the patients, an especially emotional time due to the horrid conditions of medical care. By 2015, the number

of sponsored children who were being provided schooling as well as medical attention had grown to 152. The work of transformation is perhaps most evident in caring for medical needs. Diana is one of countless

examples. She first grabbed the attention of Kimi and the staff through her obvious inactivity. While other kids responded to the team’s visit with typical enthusiasm and joy, Diana sat on the ground with empty eyes and an appearance that suggested she was merely awaiting death. Because she was crippled and suffered from a serious heart condition, she was left out. With medical attention, regular food and loads of love, Diana has been transformed into a delightful child whose laughter inspires and who readily shares smiles that were once so foreign to her. She is now the recipient of prayers from around the world and awaits complicated heart surgery, hopefully in

Public Open House Parks and Recreation Master Plan

The City of Cranbrook has been busy updating our Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The Plan will guide the planning, design and use of parks, trails, recreation facilities, and community programs/services for the next 10 years. The last plan was prepared in 1995 and set the framework for the facilities we now enjoy, such as Rotary Way Cycle/Walk trail, and the new arena and aquatic centre. The consulting firm for the Master Plan is Urban Systems. Starting in April 2015, our consultants engaged the community to provide feedback. A community survey was undertaken and nine visioning workshops were conducted, including two general public sessions. The public was invited to send emails or letters at any time. The public is invited to attend an open house on Thursday November 26th, 2015 from 3pm to 9pm, at Western Financial Place to review the draft recommendations that have emerged from this process. The open house will provide our residents with an opportunity to provide input on the draft Master Plan.

Kimi Toyota receiving hugs from Ugandan children. England. Hobaida and Swaibil are two brothers who have also been transformed through four years of love and attention. They both suffered from a severe form of skin cancer that ate away at their facial features and caused swelling of the tongue and eyes that has required that their tongues be cut open numerous times to prevent choking. Today, though still carrying serious scarring, they’re in school and thriving with joy and enthusiasm. Tr a n s f o r m a t i o n has also been the experience of the many from Canada and the U.S. who have joined teams that have served in Uganda for two week periods. Almost all have the desire to return and many have done so. On Saturday, November 28th, Kimi will be sharing stories and videos of her latest adventures in her new African home. Dessert will be served and a massive Silent Auction will offer goods and services worth over $12,000. The event will be held at Cranbrook Alliance Church at 6:30, with admission set at $5 per person. All are welcome. For one of only 200 tickets to this entertaining and informative event, please contact Gary Toyota at 250 4268645.

2016 Ford F-150

Overall: After being retooled from top to bottom for 2015 to be stronger, faster and lighter thanks to an aluminum body, the F-150 will now make it easier than ever to park like a pro. Drivetrain: The V6 and V8 engines are joined by two turbocharged “EcoBoost” V6s; all receive six-speed automatic transmissions; four-wheel-drive optional, of course; dune-jumping second-generation SVT Raptor is on the horizon. There were plenty of naysayers claiming that the world’s bestselling pickup might have lost its crown to General Motors and Ram. But a year into its new life,

and Ford’s adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 remains one heck of a game changer, and in more ways than one. Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and dingand rust-averse aluminum body panels saved as much as 315 kilograms (Ford claims), depending on whether you’re talking about regular-, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on a new laddertype frame that’s also stronger and actually lighter by a few pounds. The reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? For 2016, a new optional Pro

Trailer Backup system combines a revised rear-view camera with more helpful lines on the display and a standalone knob that drivers can twist back and forth to guide the truck exactly where it needs to go. The system is similar to Ford’s self-parking technology, which means you don’t have to use the steering wheel. Under the hood, base trucks come with a 3.5-litre V6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while a twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from last year are two of Ford’s workhorse powerplants: a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6

producing 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-litre V8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque. The old 6.2-litre V8 that was standard in the way-off-road-capable SVT Raptor has been dropped, with the second-gen Baja bruiser getting a version of the all-new 600-horsepower 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 found in the stunning Ford GT supercar. Inside, the cabin, or “office” for many truck owners, was completely transformed and in up-level models approaches luxury-car standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims. PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE BYLAWS 2620, 2621, 2624

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE BYLAWS 2560, 2570, 2577, 2653

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an amendment to the Cranbrook Rural Zoning Bylaw, Wycliffe Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw and Moyie & Area Land Use Bylaw to introduce regulations regarding minimum average parcel area and density averaging in Electoral Area C.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering housekeeping amendments to the following bylaws in Electoral Area C. • Moyie & Area Land Use Bylaw • Rockyview Official Community Plan • Cranbrook Rural Zoning Bylaw • Wycliffe Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw

Bylaw Amendment - Housekeeping

Bylaws 2620, 2621 and 2624 will require minimum average parcel areas used in bare land strata subdivisions to be equal to minimum parcel areas already established in the Zoning Bylaw. This will prohibit the use of density averaging under the Bare Land Strata Regulations to create parcels smaller than the minimum parcel area established in each zone. If Bylaws 2620, 2621 and 2624 are adopted, applicants wishing to subdivide land and create parcels smaller than permitted by the zoning bylaw will be required to submit a zoning application.

Bylaw Amendment - Housekeeping

Housekeeping amendments are carried out to correct errors, update language and move towards consistency between RDEK bylaws. Housekeeping amendments are not meant to introduce major regulatory or policy changes. They are minor amendments that form part of the evolution of zoning bylaws and OCPs.

Bylaw No. 2620 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Cranbrook Rural Zoning Bylaw No. 1402, 2001 – Amendment Bylaw No. 37, 2015 (Density Averaging / RDEK).”

Bylaw No. 2560 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Moyie & Area Land Use Bylaw No. 2070, 2008 – Amendment Bylaw No. 8, 2014 (Miscellaneous / RDEK).”

Bylaw No. 2621 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Wycliffe Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw No. 2256, 2010 – Amendment Bylaw No. 8, 2015 (Density Averaging / RDEK).”

Bylaw No. 2570 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Rockyview Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 2255, 2010 – Amendment Bylaw No. 13, 2014 (Miscellaneous / RDEK).”

Bylaw No. 2624 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Moyie & Area Land Use Bylaw No. 2070, 2008 – Amendment Bylaw No. 9, 2015 (Density Averaging / RDEK).”

Bylaw No. 2577 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Cranbrook Rural Zoning Bylaw No. 1402, 2001 – Amendment Bylaw No. 34, 2014 (Miscellaneous / RDEK).”

A public hearing will be held at: Regional District of East Kootenay (Board Room) 19 - 24th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 7:00 pm

Bylaw No. 2653 is cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Wycliffe Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw No. 2256, 2010 – Amendment Bylaw No. 10, 2015 (Miscellaneous / RDEK).”

The Board has delegated the holding of this hearing to the Directors for Electoral Area C and the City of Cranbrook.

A public hearing will be held at: Regional District of East Kootenay (Board Room) 19 - 24th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 7:00 pm

Come down to the November 20 Kootenay ICE game vs. Moose Jaw and you can help out the EKFH Starlite Campaign. The game plan for the November 20th Kootenay ICE game against Moose Jaw will be about enjoying some great hockey while raising funds for a great cause. Fans attending the November 20th game will be able to purchase Speaker from page 17

graduated from the Lower Kootenay Band operated school in 1992. He then went on to receive training as a Long Term Care Aide as well as in Aboriginal Governance and Management. He earned a diploma in Native Adult Education and dedicated several years to the Canadian Forces (Army). In 2012, Chief Louie was the recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, an honour presented to acknowledge s i g n i f i c a n t contributions and achievements by Canadians. Prior to initially being elected Chief in 2010, Louie served as a Council member for several years. His second term as Chief began in January 2015. The Culture, Politics and Education presentation is the first for the College of the Rockies’ new Indigenous Speakers Series. Chief Louie’s presentation is made possible, in part, by the College’s Faculty Development Speakers Fund. For more information on this presentation, please contact Andrew Judge, College of the Rockies’ Aboriginal Education Coordinator at: ajudge@cotr.bc.ca.

a (numbered) foam star from EKFH representatives before the game and through to almost the end of the 2nd period. Immediately following the second period of play, those fans that do purchase a star will be urged to toss it toward

the center ice face-off circle. This fundraiser for EKFH 8th Annual Starlite Campaign is thanks to a partnership with the Kootenay Ice organization and Snap’d East Kootenay. Chris Wahl, Director of Sales & Public Relations for the

Kootenay ICE states; ““The Kootenay ICE organization is proud to join forces with its hockey community to help give back and support those who need it most.” EKFH’s 8th annual Starlite Campaign is raising funds

for regional and community health programs - EKFH’s fundraising goal is to raise $145,000 and light 17 large stars ($5,000 per star) and 24 small stars ($2,500 per star). These programs are dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and more or may require help with chronic disease management, home nursing, inhome oxygen, wound, senior, pediatric and self-care programs. More often than not these programs have smaller equipment needs. However the impact those pieces of equipment and patient education tools can deliver through these programs can often help people who wouldn’t have had anywhere else to turn to for assistance. “So on November

20th, come on out to Western Financial Place to watch some hockey, meet your EKFH representatives, and support a great cause! In turn, fans get to watch their favourite players and rising stars of tomorrow in their own backyard, and the money raised supports vital community health care programs and equipment,” states Patricia Whalen, Assistant Executive Director, EKFH. We encourage all Kootenay ICE fans to support the Kootenay ICE. This organization has a soft spot for many nonprofit organizations in Cranbrook so please

thank them and show your support by attending their games. There are also many other ways to give to EKFH, and all gifts are important. Whether you choose to donate during your lifetime, or plan a gift for after you have passed on, your donation will help support priority programs with EKFH. You may make your gift in support of general areas, or direct it towards an area that is of special interest or importance to yourself. Help us support health care for families today and in generations to come! And don’t forget to like EKFH on Facebook.

Aboriginal leadership The MBSS Aboriginal Student Leadership group has been busy since we’ve returned from camp this year. We’ve been spending some time studying The Four Agreements ever since Sophie Pierre introduced us to the book. We are also learning about pouches, and under Peter’s direction, some of us are making our own pouches. There are some very interesting and useful concepts for

us to think about with both these activities. We’ve also been working toward Metis Week, which will begin on Monday, November 16 to commemorate Louis Riel Day. Look for Metis flags to be flying around the community. Our group is hosting a celebration and proclamation at 1 p.m. in Rotary Park. There will be a few speeches, some jigging, and singing of the Metis National

Anthem. Everyone is welcome, come on out to celebrate Metis week with us. On November 19, there will be a Metis Kitchen Party at Parkland School. Everyone is invited as this is a family-friendly event that consists of a potluck supper, music and dance. Come on over; if you can, bring a shareable dish, and be ready to have lots of fun between five and eight p.m. on the 19th.
