Moustaches in style during Brovember campaign By CHRIS BUSH THE NEwS BULLETiN

Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation is once again finding itself in a somewhat hairy situation with Brovember, a local twist on the Movember men’s health movement. The foundation is inviting men in the central Island region to grow a ’stache for cash or pledge a bro to grow one and raise money for men’s health, specifically to help Nanaimo Regional General Hospital buy new cystoscope units to diagnose prostate cancer. “A cystocope checks out blad-

der issues and that sort of thing, but it also checks out your prostate to see if you have any prostate issues,” said Feron Walker, foundation spokeswoman. Brovember has raised $27,000 since it was started in 2010 and organizers hope to reach this year’s goal, set at $25,000. Each cystoscope costs about $17,000, but supplies and replacement parts are also needed for existing units. Men with local business groups and service clubs and medical professionals have followed their competitive instincts, joined the Brovember movement and ritually

cast aside their razors to take a crack at winning the coveted Brovember Cup, not to show off their ability to grow monumental moustaches, but to display their prowess as premier pledge earners. “We like to keep the money local and all our money stays local,” Walker said. No moustache will be ignored. Prizes will be awarded for creativity and best attempt for those wispy wannabes. Nanaimo medical marijuana dispensaries will remain open, despite the threat of police enforcement. Medical marijuana dispensaries have reached out to government for clarity on potential new regulations and help in the lead-up to a deadline to stop selling marijuana. But dispensaries have no plans to close, according to the new Nanaimo Cannabis Coalition. “Our coalition has stated we will remain open … because people need their medicine,” said Matthew O’Donnell, coalition spokesman. Ten medical marijuana dispensaries were given notice last Thursday by the Nanaimo RCMP to stop selling marijuana and marijuana derivatives in seven days or they could face police enforcement, including the arrest of employees and patrons. No further questions are being answered by the Nanaimo RCMP, but in an earlier e-mail spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien said action is related to

an ongoing commitment to public safety and to notify dispensaries about the ramifications of noncompliance with the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Health Canada only licenses six B.C. producers, including Tilray, to sell to registered, medically prescribed patients. Still, local pot retailers have been openly selling bud, tinctures and marijuana-infused edibles to Nanaimo customers, some for close to a year.

We will remain open, because people need their medicine.

On Monday, O’Donnell appealed to Nanaimo city council to stand with “thousands” of medical marijuana users and to ask the RCMP for a cooling-off period while the new Liberal government decides how it will legalize marijuana. The coalition will also lab test products to medicinal standards and welcomes regulation, he said. See ‘DISPENSARY’ /10

Boil water advisory in effect

Hamperville setting itself weighty goal With Hamperville Nanaimo kicking off Tuesday and Christmas just over a month away, organizers are setting their sights on collecting 55,000 kilograms of food. The hamper program, a partnership between Nanaimo Salvation Army and Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank, collected more than 49,000 kg of food for the needy in 2014, and Peter Sinclair, food bank executive director, is confident the community can help surpass that number this year. Items particularly needed, according to Sinclair, are canned fish, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and pasta sauce and canned beans. “We’ve seen a slight

A boil water advisory is in effect in Nanaimo. The City of Nanaimo issued the advisory Tuesday night because heavy rainfalls have increased turbidity in Nanaimo’s South Forks watershed, according to a press release.

Residents are advised to boil their drinking water for one minute. “Once the system has cleared up and the boil water advisory has been lifted, we will advise users, said Bill Sims, the municipality’s man-

Council agrees to wine rules Nanaimo grocery stores interested in stocking wine will have to meet new criteria. City council agreed to rezoning criteria for grocery stores wanting to sell wine, despite concerns from some politicians the new process is restrictive and expensive. The B.C. government has rolled out new changes to liquor control legislation and policy, allowing select grocery stores to carry B.C. wine, cider and sake. In Nanaimo, those stores will also have to apply to rezone and meet criteria like a floor plan showing the wine sales area. Coun. Jim Kipp was concerned the rezoning is an “expensive proposition” while Coun. Bill Bestwick said it speaks to red tape and bureaucracy.

Machete attacker guilty of assault

WEAPONS DRAWN in argument. BY KARL YU

The News BulleTIN

The man arrested in a July machete attack was found guilty on one count of aggravated assault by a provincial court judge in Nanaimo on Wednesday. The charge stems from an incident that took place around 1 a.m. on Canada Day. According to Judge Justine Saunders’s ruling, Jesse Wayne Goodale, 25, struck a man with the machete in the Harewood area after a verbal argument. The victim underwent emergency

brain surgery and suffered paralysis as a result. Saunders said Goodale and his girlfriend were arguing when a man, unknown to both of them, shouted at them to keep quiet. During the course of the argument, Saunders said Goodale6” produced a machete and the man pulled out a pellet gun. Goodale had claimed to have acted in self-defence, something Saunders discounted, as Goodale had also admitted to lying to police many times and his testimony was contradicted by his girlfriend. The trial took place in late October and a date for sentencing has not been set yet. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Municipality hires interim city manager

Nanaimo’s new interim city manager starts today (Nov. 19). Tracy Samra steps into a new role as interim city manager this week, filling in as the municipality searches for a permanent candidate. She is the first woman and Aboriginal to hold the position at city hall, the city announced in a press release.

“I am thrilled,” Samra said. “First task is to sit down with mayor and council and ask them what their strategic priorities are.” Samra was the corporate officer and manager of legislative services for the City of Nanaimo in 2013 and lectures on natural resources management and indigenous rights at Vancouver Island

University. She is a senior administrator, consultant and lawyer with experience working in federal, provincial and Aboriginal public sectors. “Tracy brings to the city a wide range of executive experience, including knowledge across all levels of government,” said Gord Fuller, acting mayor, in a press release.

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a south-end convenience store Sunday. Nanaimo RCMP said in a press release that a man robbed the James General Store on Victoria Road at about 7:50 p.m. when he allegedly brandished a long-bladed knife or machete and demanded the female clerk hand over money from the till. The suspect grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and ran off down Victoria Road. No one was injured in the incident. Officers and a police dog were on scene within minutes, but failed to locate the suspect, described as possibly Caucasian, in his mid 30s, 6-foot-3 with a muscular build. He wore sunglasses, a grey scarf covering his face, gloves, a dark puffy jacket, dark pants and a dark tuque. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.

It’s time for Nanaimo to discuss whether it’s open to large-scale foreign investment, according to Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay. He and Andre Sullivan, chairman of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, are back from a nine-day trade mission to China, where they met with investors who were interested in agriculture, the conference centre hotel and real estate. This month’s overseas trip was mostly independent of B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s trade delegation, which Sullivan and McKay joined for two half-days. The rest of the trip in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai, McKay and Sullivan met with Chinese provincial trade representatives and discussed opportunities in Nanaimo with business people and investment firms. There was no discussion with investors on liquefied natural gas opportunities McKay initially wanted to explore, but there was interest in the Hilton and conference centre hotel sites, a passenger ferry, seafood markets and real By going on estate, including the city’s the trip, we plans for the south indusunlocked a new trial waterfront. Neither the mayor nor Sullivan would disclose pot of money. with whom they met, but McKay said the trip was “1,000 per cent” worthwhile and he can’t wait to go back. He’d like to see four more trips this term. The question now is how this city feels about multimillion-dollar investment that would change the flavour of the community, said McKay. “We were asked more than once, how will the community receive $100, $200, $500 million dollars worth of investment from Asian investors because in some of their projects in different parts of North America, they’ve had backlash,” he said. “So for us in Nanaimo, it’s time for us to ask the community that question.” Sullivan said he and the mayor started very good relationships with a few people in China who are going to come and see the community. “All the projects that you read about in your paper, all the projects that you hear about all require capital and the most common pitfall is people aren’t able to raise that capital,” Sullivan said. “By going on the trip we unlocked a new pot of money that’s available for some of those investments.” The trip tallied about $13,000 in total, Sullivan said. Two delegations from China are expected to come to the city in the New Year to look at investment sites.

Plenty to read at city library

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but a lot of readers have been quick to pass judgement on the library renovations downtown. The Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Harbourfront branch re-opened last month after a major interior redesign. According to the library, the collection of books was trimmed from 50,000 to 45,000, but some patrons suggest the reduction was more significant than that and have gone so far as to circulate a petition in protest. Certainly the space has become a lot more, well, spacious. Though we think the complaints are exaggerated, we’re encouraged that patrons feel protective about their library – it shows that a connection exists with this important public institution. And it indicates that there should have been a greater level of community consultation, and if not in this instance, then certainly in the future. While some readers don’t want their library to change, libraries must change. They must appeal to book lovers, while at the same time endeavouring to keep up with the times and remain relevant to residents. We know that libraries don’t serve the same purpose they once did, as different kinds of reading material is available on different kinds of platforms. What has remained, fortunately, is a love of reading, though we must do our very best to pass it on to the next generation and the next, and ensure that text messages don’t totally supersede the attraction of a good book. Vancouver Island’s libraries proficiently balance these various challenges, and the regional book-sharing system is a major advantage in providing accessibility to materials. The book we want may not be on the shelf, but it isn’t far away. The renovated library looks great. We hope the shelves will be filled, in time. But honestly, if we visit Nanaimo’s libraries and we can’t find anything to read, that is our failing, not theirs.

China and India’s carbon emissions have about tripled since the Kyoto public relations gesture in 1997. That growth is one reason why Canada’s share of global emissions has now fallen to below two per cent. Here in B.C., Clark intends to unveil her “Climate 2.0” plan before heading to Paris. We’ll see if it includes another increase in B.C.’s vaunted carbon tax, which now translates to about seven cents on a litre of gasoline. Even without carbon taxes, about a third of the pump price Canadians pay is federal, provincial and local tax. The B.C. government admits its post-carbon tax reduction in greenhouse gas emissions was largely due to the global recession of 2008-09. Now with crude oil at historic low prices, B.C.’s carbon tax is a weak signal lost in the noise of a world-wide glut of oil and gas. ◆ Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

A municipal council can and does tell the local RCMP what community priorities are, which the police then apply to their community policing strategy – one that reflects the practices of the community they serve. So, Nanaimo council could have easily chosen to inform the local detachment that dispensaries are a very low-priority item, and they could have also politely requested that police leave the people’s medicine providers alone. Our council chose not to do this. Since they have not, I am of the opinion that our council have given its implied consent to having the outlets raided and the medicine people need seized. Sad, yes, but also a cop out and a letdown of thousands of people.

Pamela McColl Smart Approaches to Marijuana Canada

To the Editor,

File photo

Readers have differing opinions on the RCMP’s threatened crackdown on marijuana dispensaries in the city.

To the Editor,

Re: Pot dispensaries advised by RCMP to close up shop, Nov. 17. I am writing after reading your article and wish to state our support for the RCMP doing their job – which is to uphold the Criminal Code of Canada. The dispensaries or pot stores are a public health threat. There is a legal method for people to get marijuana for a medical

purpose which is the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations and it is correct for the RCMP to act in closing the pot stores operating in Nanaimo. They pose a public health threat and the operators were willing to flaunt the law – act above the law in both purchasing marijuana for resale and reselling it on the main streets of Nanaimo. We have ways to change

Re: Pot dispensaries advised by RCMP to close up shop, Nov. 17. Considering Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s mandate, last week, to Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, to begin the process of legalizing and regulating cannabis in Canada, isn’t it time for any and all police agencies along with the RCMP to put a moratorium on terrorizing and extorting cannabis dispensaries? Stephen Harper is history and cannabis prohibition will soon be history; all that’s left is formalities and calling the dogs off citizens. Stan White Dillon, Colo.

Funding system needs to be reformed before any schools close To the Editor,

Re: Development could boost enrolment, Nov. 10. I was one of the many concerned citizens who attended the School District 68 meeting this month. I have no children in the Rutherford Elementary school, but I am very familiar with it and its excellent reputation. I was therefore puzzled about the proposed closure of the school. I live in the community and notice that the last three housing sales in

my small street has seen people of my generation (seniors or soon to be) move out and people with young families move in. Two realtors from different companies warned of the present and planned development in the Frank Ney catchment area and the future problems if they indeed take in the Rutherford students. The trustees seem to be nice enough people doing their best with the budget they are given, but I became alarmed at the disconnect between the trustees and the excel-

lent information provided by the presenters. As a former planner, I believe the problem lies in the formula used to guide the trustees. I hope more thought is given to trustee Jamie Brennan’s offer of a three-year moratorium on school closures. I think time is needed to reform and correct the present system and hopefully the B.C. Government will give the trustees a proper budget to work with.

hen Natalie MacMaster steps on stage, she’s all business. She views each performance as going to work. “It’s very concentrated. I’m very focused on performing well,” she said. Even though she ensures her intonations are correct she still taps into her inner pas-

intimate way. “We get down to the roots of the music and people hear all the subtleties they don’t necessarily hear with a full band,” said MacMaster. This tour has a special bonus for MacMaster because her family gets to join her on the road. “I feel really grateful. I don’t have to leave my family when performing shows,” she said. “I am living my life out here with my family. It’s a rare gift.” On Nov. 8, MacMaster and Leahy won Instrumental Group of the Year for their album One at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. “For us to play traditional music, it’s a real bonus,” said MacMaster. The album, One, is the first official recording the two have created together, even though they both have enjoyed successful music careers. MacMaster has released 11 albums and won two Juno and 11 East Coast Music Awards. Leahy has won three Juno awards and is widely recognized as one of the best Celtic fiddlers in the world. Artists draw inspiration from forests

ART GALLERY unveils exhibit, Silva Part II. BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Forest practices are examined through contemporary and historical lenses and a variety of mediums during the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Booming Grounds exhibit. The exhibit is the second part of Silva. Silva Part I: O Horizon examined the path of microcosms on the forest floor and how decomposing material supports life such as trees, fungi and other flora and animals in the environment. The

trees into lumber or other commodities and distributing the products to a global market. The works discuss the next chapter of a log’s life and “reflect on different aspects of this industry and how it relates to society,” said Jesse Birch, Booming Grounds’ curator. Booming Grounds is a collection of works which includes

photography, painting, film, video and sculptures. It includes pieces from Al Bersh and Leslie Grant, Marian Penner Bancroft, Jason De Haan and Miruna Dragan, Wilmer Gold, Liz Magor, George Sawchuk, Carol Sawyer; Kathy Slade, Kate Stefiuk and Elias Wakan. Sculptures by the late George Sawchuk, a logger who lost part of his leg during an

industrial accident, have a strong political message. “He is very loud politically,” said Birch. The exhibit also includes photographs of pieces he created in the late ’80s on his property in Fanny Bay. Over a 30-year period he created a forest gallery and since installing the pieces they have slowly been overgrown by forest life. “His voice is getting gentler and the forest’s voice is getting louder,” said Birch. A tour of his forest gallery – conducted by Grant Shilling who is working on a book about Sawchuk’s life – is Saturday (Nov. 28) at 2 p.m. The tour costs $10 and people attending must meet at 372 Bates Drive in Fanny Bay or contact the gallery to arrange car pooling. Booming Grounds runs Sunday (Nov. 21) to Feb. 13. An opening lecture by Bersch and Grant is Friday (Nov. 20), 6:15 p.m. in the gallery’s art lab. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Poet celebrates milestone

I

wAkAn eyeS new tradition for position.

By RACHEL STERN The News BulleTiN

With two years under her belt as Nanaimo’s inaugural poet laureate Naomi Beth Wakan jovially suggests she’d like to add another tradition to the position for the next poet receiving the honour. “I would like a tiara and a sash, you know how the Miss Universe has the ribbon. I would like a ribbon. It would be fun to pass on the sash to the next poet,” said Wakan. Wakan, who lives on Gabriola, still has a year left as the city’s cultural ambassador. Who knows if a tiara is on the horizon, but

nAOMI BeTH wAkAn

she has a number of upcoming projects she’s excited about. She’s hoping to create a poetry competition for high school students. Another new initiative is a poetry map for Nanaimo. The map will allow users to select specific locations in the city, such as historical sites or parks, and read a poem that relates to the location. “We want specific spots … it’s quite exciting,” she said.

Island Consort Chamber Choir

The project will use a map similar to the Google Map format. People can click on the location they are visiting and a PDF of the poem will open. When she was first named as poet laureate, Wakan hoped she could inspire others to discover their creative outlets. “Anybody I meet I insist they can be writers,” she said. “I am so keen in the use of poetry in expressing feelings and observing life in particular.” Some of the highlights Wakan has enjoyed as poet laureate over the past year include the Cascadia Poetry Festival.

“Hundreds of poets came and it was so exciting,” said Wakan. She likes speaking at the cultural events held around the city. At the end of her first year Wakan published a chapbook of poems, Naomi in Nanaimo. She’s created another for this year, Naomi in Nanaimo Again. To celebrate her second anniversary, a gathering is being held at the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Art Lab, located at 150 Commercial St. Sunday (Nov. 21) at 2 p.m. The event is free but space is limited. Artisans host country tour Artisans in Cedar and Yellow Point are opening their doors to people during the 27th annual Country Christmas Tour. Margaret Worms, owner of The Dollhouse Gift Shop, started the tour. In the past it was difficult to get people from Nanaimo to travel to Cedar, said Worms, but that has changed over time and more people every year take the self-guided tour. Worms plans to retire after this

Curry exhibits work from three of her series: Phasing, How To Read the Sky and Ancient Light. In Phasing she examines edges and how these edges such as shorelines are changed and eroded. Curry uses an abstract style to take the “beauty of the natural world” and interpret it in her own way. “It corresponds a lot to the erosive nature of sandstone, the eroded nature of the shoreline,” said Curry. Gabriola’s Drumbeg Park is one of the places that inspires her work. “There are a lot of hours spent pacing on the shoreline,” she said. She works on pieces of wood and layers the paint and then sands it down to show erosion. Both artists speak to the theme of intertidal in different ways. Rich shows work from two series: Impressions of Place and Segmented Visions. Her pieces explore the theme of creation and how this leads to both order

Malls help raise money while celebrating Christmas

I

entertainment included in activities.

In the spirit of giving, Country Club Centre invites the community to help support Nanaimo not-for-profit organizations while visiting the shopping centre this Christmas season. The mall celebrates its 10th annual Breakfast with Santa on Nov. 29, from 9-10:45 a.m. Families can enjoy a complete breakfast of pancakes, bacon, pastries, juice, Starbucks coffee and Tea Desire tea. Kids can participate in Christmas crafts, musical strollers, face painting, angel stilters and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Tickets are available for $5 at Country Club’s information and lotto booth (babies under 1 year are free). All ticket money is donated to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Help put a smile on the face of a child who might not otherwise receive a gift this year. Drop off a new, unwrapped toy at Country Club’s

The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association is inviting you to plan your ‘holi-date’ in downtown Nanaimo. Whether it’s checking out the decorations and shop windows, or meeting friends for dinner and entertainment, there is something for everyone to enjoy downtown this holiday season. For families, the fun begins Nov. 28 at the Santa Fly-In at the Harbour Air Seaplane Terminal at Pioneer Waterfront Plaza. The party gets started at 1:30 p.m. The fun continues as children escort Santa and his elves to 101 Gordon St. to officially open Santa’s Workshop in the lower level of the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. The workshop will open at 2:30 p.m. and Santa will visit with the children until 4:15 p.m. Enjoy holiday-themed crafts, music, and more. All the fun continues at Diana Krall Plaza at 4:30 p.m. as the city gets ready for the

The Vancouver Island Crisis Society will join together in a unique way to observe International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. The Soles Remembering Souls event Nov. 25 is meant to bring together suicide loss survivors. In the past, Soles Remembering Souls has been more about honouring loved ones through pictures, stories and memories, but this year there will be a greater focus on talking about education and tools for coping with loss and struggle. Participants are asked to bring a new pair of shoes or socks for charity. Pizza will be served and there will be musical performances. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. at Vancouver Island University, Building 355, Room 203.

Beefs & bouquets BEEF To the authorities who are unable to enforce fireworks regulations. If you can’t catch those who advertise their lawbreaking with bright lights and loud noise, the criminals who work quietly in the dark must feel pretty safe. BOUQUET To all the sensible bicyclists out there who are well-marked for traffic to see. Fluorescent or reflective clothing and flashing lights are very smart. It’s safer being visible day and night and especially in rain. BEEF But I’m not so happy with some cyclists who slow up a lane of traffic. BOUQUET To all who organized or attended the Nov. 11 ceremony at the cenotaph. Also to Save-On-Foods for sponsoring lunch at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256. BEEF To spitters. What’s with spitting in public? Does that look ‘cool?’ It’s disgusting to see (both young guys and girls) and especially rude to know we step there. That being said, it’s good to see that only a few behave this way. BOUQUET To our dear Linda from WeCare for your kindness, knowledge and creativity in planning Thursday outings that put a smile on the face and a warmth in the heart of our favourite 101-year-old lady. BEEF To the North American media for not telling the negative side of the European migrant crisis. Their completely biased spin and grand omissions on the whole scenario are both false and misleading. Citizens of affected countries are not being protected by their governments and police forces. This is treason. BOUQUET To the young men who work at Kirby’s Source for Sports. Great customer service and a professional approach.

BEEF To those contributing to the rise in Islamophobia following the terror attacks in Paris. BOUQUET To Dr. Ahmed Omar, denturist at CODE for exceptional service and for tirelessly working on a new set of dentures for my mouth which was not an easy job. Not only has my self confidence increased tenfold, I haven’t stopped smiling since.

BOUQUET As a person in bankruptcy who apparently can’t add my groceries correctly, I give a giant bouquet to those in line who pay my last few cents. God bless the lady who paid more than $30 in QF over my protests. BOUQUET To Chris Jeffs and family. Bless you all for the time and money you spent making the candy apples for Halloween. The tradition may have ended, but Ella and Ted would be proud. BOUQUET To Clodagh, Brett and all the support staff at Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital for more than 15 years of outstanding care for our rescue dog Trixie. At every stage of her long life you were there for her providing professional, loving and sensible treatment for every situation.

BOUQUET To three Nanaimo companies for their excellent, immediate service. Carolyn at Home Hardware for fixing our paint colour, Budget Glass for its immediate service putting glass in our picture frame and Pro Print for coiling my book.

BOUQUET To Dianne at Lil Hairy Paws dog grooming for going above and beyond for a very old, very spoiled dog Sammi. I appreciate your kindness. BOUQUET To our paper delivery person, David Lomas. He goes above and beyond to make sure I get my Thursday paper and flyers intact and is always cheerful (no matter what the weather). It is so appreciated.

BEEF To the new library renovations – there are no books, and low shelves means it’s really noisy. What a waste.

BEEF To the Remembrance Day organizers. I went to the service to honour our veterans, not to hear the Star-Spangled Banner played.

BOUQUET To Quality Foods for closing all its stores on Nov. 11 in honour of Remembrance Day – truly Canadian.

BOUQUET To the paramedics who came down from their seats in the Avalon Theatre to help my 80-year-old mother when she fell and hit her head on the concrete floor. If it weren’t for you, she may have made things worse by getting up.

BOUQUET To the Altrusa Club of Nanaimo for its donation to the Brechin Elementary PAC. Great things will happen for our children this year with the support of our community members like you.

BEEF To the physiotherapist for dumping clients with short notice and telling them to find a new physiotherapist. Apparently this is the only solution the business could come up with to deal with a staffing situation.

BOUQUET To all the volunteers for all their time donated to the Halloween dance at Brechin Elementary School. Thank you as well to Cobs Bread and Costco for your donations to our fundraiser.

BOUQUET To the great Halloween kids on Lang Crescent. Very polite, lots of smiles and great costumes. Can’t wait until next year.

BOUQUET Thanks from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 to Pat and her neighbours. They were so upset at the thefts of poppy boxes in Nanaimo that they took up a collection to personally bring in to the branch. We are very touched by your thoughtfulness. BOUQUET To the talented young musicians in Fiddelium. We are very proud of all of you and applaud your hard work. BOUQUET To Gloria at the Southgate Mall Tim Hortons who is always cheerful and greets you with a smile.

Submit your own Beef or Bouquet Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Length is limited to 40 words and two submissions per person per week. A winner will be selected at random to receive a floral bouquet from Turley’s Florist and Potting Shed. BEEF To whoever thought it was a good idea to have schools compete in a yelling contest at the Clippers games. It is very annoying. Please make it stop.

________________________________________________________________________________

BOUQUET For five weeks of amazing medical care from the ER, to fourth floor, to transition, to ICU, to sixth floor, to palliative care. We are blessed to have so many dedicated, caring people working at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

________________________________________________________________________________

BEEF Nanaimo transit is worse off with new schedule. The 30 is often late and on Sunday you cannot make the connection with the 40. It’s very poorly planned and should definitely be revised soon. I know I am not the only one frustrated.

IRENE FULLA Family is deeply saddened to share news that on Saturday, October 10th, 2015 our dear Mum, Noni and Grand Noni passed away suddenly and peacefully at the age of 88. Mum was predeceased by her father (Ted), her mother (Elfreda) and her dearest husband, Joseph. She is survived by her son, Ken (Elaine), her daughter Karen (Ed) Beams, grandchildren Rick (Heather) Fulla, Krystal (Wes) Cathcart and Lee Fulla; as well as her precious great grandchildren, Calvin & Cameron Fulla and Kennedy & Alessia Cathcart. Mum also leaves her brother Erling (Eva) Johnson, her sister Ivy Stubbs and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family in Sweden. She will be missed as well by a wealth of dear and special friends who provided years of wonderful memories and much comfort to Mum these last few years. Special thanks to Jim, Heddy, Clare, Roma and Viola; we can’t thank you enough. Mum was incredibly kind, caring and loving, but also had amazing strength as life was not always easy. Her faith in God was unwavering and was her lifeline. She also appreciated the support of family and special friends in getting through those tough patches. Mum loved gardening and was especially proud of her beautiful dahlias. She also excelled at sewing, knitting, crocheting and made a fabulous strawberry pie. Mum could not have been prouder of her children and grandchildren, and her great grandchildren brought her a world of joy. Special thank you to Dr. Margot Walker, Dr. Nuamah, Nanaimo Home Support and staff of NRGH Floors 1 & 5, as well as Dr. Wallis and all the incredible staff at Malaspina Gardens, who provided such loving and compassionate care to Mum these past 3 months. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 5th, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Departure Bay Baptist Church, 3510 Departure Bay Road, Nanaimo. Flowers gratefully declined. If you wish, donations can be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada to honour Mum’s great granddaughter, Kennedy or to a charity of your choice.

For those who love, time is not. Missing you today and always.

Morison, Harold Alfred In Loving Memory Harold Alfred Morison, 85, of Nanaimo, BC passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on the evening of November 1, 2015 in Palliative Care at NRGH following a 17 month battle with leukemia. Harold was born in Moosehorn, Manitoba on August 11, 1930 to the late John and Emma (Schade) Morison. Harold was a loving husband to Moraine (Pay) whom he married on September 20, 1958. Whether Harold was building wonderful places from bare land or planting countless trees, gardens, flower beds, and flower pots, wherever he went he made the world a more beautiful place. God blessed Harold with strength of character, mind and body. His smile and unfailing love and support for his family will be greatly missed. Harold was preceded in death by his son Brad. He is survived by his wife Moraine, brother Larry, sister Shirley, son Scott, daughters Valerie and Noreen and grandchildren Kyle, Deanna, Carson and Evan. …For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. SMITH,

George (Mac) MacDonald March 25, 1932 ~ Nov. 14, 2015 Mac passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Mac was happily married for 57 years with his wife, Betty. They had four children: Gayle (Dave) Newman, Robert (Carol), Valerie, Wendy (Don) May; grandchildren: Matthew, Kyla (Brandon) Bernstein, and Jordan and great grandchildren: Emily, Makenna and Beckett. Pre-deceased by his brother, Kenneth and sister, Lorraine King. Also loved and treasured by his sister in laws, brother in laws, nephews, nieces and many friends. He attended John Shaw in Nanaimo and Shawnigan Lake Boys School before starting his career in bulldozing/logging - his businesses included Midland Bulldozing, Ro-Mac Contracting and Waycotray Logging. He did a lot of business deals with just a handshake, he took pride in his work and had a strong work ethic, he loved operating his bulldozer and building roads. His work took him to different areas on Vancouver Island and at times the whole family went to camp. Betty was the love of his life and they made a loving and welcoming home for their family and friends. They loved their life from dances at the Pleasant Valley Hall to camping and travelling together. Into their retirement they spent many winters in Palm Springs meeting dear friends that became their extended family. Dad will always be remembered for his sense of humour, easy smiles, and willingness to beat you at a game of cribbage. We would like to extend our gratitude to the many caretakers and nurses at Malaspina Garden. Thank you for caring for our Mac Daddy. Also thank you to Dr. Oberholster for her care and compassion. Celebration of Life will take place on Friday November 20th, 2015 at Trinity United on Spartan Road, Nanaimo at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Things get tougher for Barsby Bulldogs

I

VARSITY FOOTBALL team faces top-level opponent. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

Two teams with high hopes for these playoffs are going to take the field, and only one will be left standing. The Barsby Bulldogs take on the Abbotsford Panthers this Saturday (Nov. 21) in Nanaimo in B.C. High School Football’s AA varsity quarterfinals. “We’re going to be playing definitely one of the top three teams in the whole province, a team that’s beat some of the really good AAA squads,” said Rob Stevenson, Bulldogs coach. Barsby is coming off a 77-0 win in its playoff opener against Moscrop, but Abby is also riding high after dismantling Pitt Meadows 57-8. Abbotsford boasts star player Chase Claypool, bound for the NCAA’s Notre Dame. “Abbotsford has a tremendous surrounding cast. It’s not just that one athlete,” Stevenson said. “A very good defence, offensive line’s superb, receivers, it’s pick your poison. We have to be complete and as mistake-free as we can.” He said this week’s test will be a big step up physically. And mentally – last week’s eyecatching shutout win doesn’t change Barsby’s mindset, said Doyle Sosnowski, defensive lineman. “No it does not. We’re working harder than everybody out there and we know it and they know it, and we’re just ready to go play whoever wants to play

Clippers seeking consistency BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Clippers want to be able to take steps forward without taking steps back. The Nanaimo Clippers are looking for more consistency as they continue a busy stretch of games in B.C. Hockey League action. This past weekend’s results were another example of the junior A team’s up-and-down play, as the Clips were roughed up 7-3 by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs but efficient the next night in a 4-3 win over the Langley Rivermen. “You just have to compare the two feelings… We control that feeling every night,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach.

“You’re not going to win every game, but it’s not about being perfect. It’s about doing your job to the best of your ability and playing with confidence.” Part of building consistency is sticking with the system, said Nolan Aibel, Clippers forward, but it also means not taking any nights off. “And not thinking that our opponent that we’re playing is worse than us,” he said. “We can’t act like we’ve already won the game before we’ve played it.” GAME ON … The Clippers face the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday (Nov. 20) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena, then visit the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday in Duncan. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

us,” he said. “We had a good game, but we’re going to practise harder than last week and we’re going to keep ourselves together.” In other Barsby football news, the junior varsity ’Dawgs are, coincidentally, also matched up against the Abbotsford Panthers this week, except that game will be played in the Fraser Valley today. “That will be our true test this year so far,” said Matt Heinrichs, coach of the junior Bulldogs. He said he had been scouting Abby even before the playoffs started in anticipation of the matchup. “So we’re going to put a game plan together for them and see how we can rally it up,” he said. He’s new to Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling, but he knows how to win in Nanaimo. Ice will make his return to the ring in his hometown this Saturday (Nov. 21) at VIPW’s Headlocks for Hunger card at the Departure Bay Activity Centre. The ‘Larger Than Life Superstar’ has been wrestling in Ontario the past several years. “My heart’s still on the West Coast,” he said. “The fan base and the electricity that the West Coast brings, as much as you want to look for it elsewhere, there’s no place like home, so to speak.” He had been keeping an eye on VIPW from afar and likes the level of fan engagement.

Nanaimo pro wrestler Ice will be on the card at Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling’s Headlocks for Hunger show this Saturday (Nov. 21).

“When the fans are having an amazing time, you know the wrestlers are having an amazing time, so you just want to be a part of it,” Ice said.

He’ll take on Eddie Osbourne, a big, tough bruiser with whom Ice has feuded in the past. “He’s fallen almost every time to my speed. It doesn’t mat-

ter how big you are, if I can be one step ahead of him, he’s got no chance,” Ice said. Hometown advantage could also be a factor. Ice is “pumped” about returning home to wrestle. “There’s just a different level that comes with that,” he said. “Pressure, excitement, thrill, you name it, I’m going to be feeling it.” The main event features two other Nanaimo wrestlers – B.J. Laredo and Scott Steel, who will be facing VIPW tag-team champions Tony Baroni and Billy Suede in an anything-goes street fight. Cremator and women’s champ Riea Von Slasher are some of the other names on the card. BELL TIME … First match is at 7 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door or $10 in advance at Popeye’s Nanaimo and That ’50s Barbershop. It’s not until players are U14 or older that full eleven-aside matches are played on full-sized fields, with Harry Wipper field, Bowen West and the artificial turf fields being utilized for house league matches on Saturdays. This year, Nanaimo fields nine boys’ or girls’ rep teams of various age groups in the Upper Island League. Matches are played on Sundays. Also on Sundays at the Merle Logan artificial turf field are matches in the Vancouver Island Premier League. The VIPL is a Tier 2 rep league consisting of eight regional squads. Our region is represented by the Upper Island Storm, composed of mainly Nanaimo players. Soccer has always been a big part of Nanaimo’s sports history and the Harbour City Football Club is continuing that tradition for youths in our community. What a fantastic opportunity for all B.C. junior and juvenile aged teams to compete with the province’s best…” said Melissa Soligo, Curl B.C. provincial coach, in a press release. “The more opportunities that can be provided to these young athletes, the better and the brighter the future of curling in B.C. looks.”

Undefeated b-ball teams will collide The PacWest’s two unbeaten basketball teams tip off this week in Nanaimo. The VIU Mariners host the Quest Kermodes on Saturday (Nov. 21) in men’s hoops action. The day before, another top team, the Langara Falcons, visits. “This will be a tough weekend, probably the toughest weekend of our first semester here and a nice way to close out the first portion of the season,” said Matt Kuzminski, M’s coach. He said Quest is a veteran team that has won some tough games, while Langara is young but talented and always wellcoached. “If we play our game and we play together and excited, I feel very confident that we can win those games,” Kuzminski said. GAME ON … VIU takes on Langara at 8 p.m. Friday at the Vancouver Island University gym after the women’s game at 6 p.m. Saturday’s games against Quest are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Do you really know what your kids are up to? ▾ MYTH: Once kids join a gang there’s no hope for them: Reality: Gang members in B.C. come from every socio-economic background and all ethnicities. While racial, ethnic, and gender composition can vary by locality or type of gang, gangs are often as diverse as our communities and many do not restrict who joins as long as they can make money for the gang.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC. The test cars were preproduction Euro-spec 250s but we did get to take to the winding, often mountainous roads in a version that will more closely resemble the Canadian 300 4Matic. The same 2.0 turbo-four gas engine we get, though light of around 33 horses,

the freeway – zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds – and up those hills. And it was quiet in that cabin. Incidentally, the GLC will use four-cylinder power in all versions – gas, diesel and plug-in gas/electric hybrid. Mercedes boasts that the GLC is at home on any terrain. Most of those purchased will become city dwellers, destined to hunt in shopping malls, but the drive proved the GLC is more than capable in the wild. The first Canadian models will be gas-powered, a turbo-diesel comes in the 2017 model year and a plug-in hybrid is scheduled for 2018. A coupe version is on the way but no date yet.

The route taken for the launch of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV was cruel and unusual punishment for some of us. The navigation system guided us through a spectacular drive of more than 500 kilometres, which started and concluded in Basel, the Swiss city straddling the Swiss, French and German borders. First, we motored to Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, and then returned the next day via the Vosges Mountains and the Munster Valley. It was a tough but extremely pleasurable drive in this premium mid-range, second generation SUV from Mercedes-Benz, which replaces the GLK moniker with GLC reflecting its mechanical similarities to the C-Class sedan.
