Left to right: Al Story and Syverson land on top of Old Glory. After hiking to the top of Old Glory for many years, Wayne Syverson was more than ready for a helicopter ride to the top. Al Story was thrilled to have a ride to the top of Old Glory this summer.
Oldtimers take thrill ride up Old Glory Former weather observers visit site of historic weather station
SHERI REGNIER Trail Times
Climbing skyward through blinding snow, high winds and bitter cold was all in a day’s work for the fellows who manned the Old Glory weather station. Built in 1943 atop the highest peak in the Rossland Range, the small but sturdy observatory played an integral role in the early days of tracking and reporting weather for the federal Department of Transportation. Every six hours, one man on a team of three, would poke his head out the door and observe cloud formation, the precipitation level , and temperature before shutting out the cold. An old-school wind reading would be jotted down and the barometric pressure charted, then all measurements were reported to the Castlegar airport via two-way radio. From there, the data was teletyped to a main office in Vancouver, merged with reports from a network of weather stations, then shared with airports across North America. Those were the protocols for 25 years and second nature for Old Glory weather observers (as they were called) Al Story and Wayne Syverson. Until this summer, the last time the two friends were on top of the mountain together was well over 50 years ago. Now in their 80s, hiking up to the old site isn’t like the good old days. So, when Wayne’s daughter organized a helicopter trip up Old Glory in July, the men were eager to visit Rossland and ready for a
vertical ride down memory lane. Both have plenty of stories to reminisce, but acknowledged the trek to the top could well be their last. If not for their innate sense of the mountain alongside the skilled pilot, the chopper probably wouldn’t have landed that blustery and foggy day - and Old Glory would have remained a distant memory. “The top third of the mountain was in cloud and there was virtually no visibility,” explains Story. “It was quite a chore to get the helicopter up there. We came in from the east side and asked to go on the downwind side to see if visibility was any better.” That approach brought them to the north face of the peak called the “Goat Hole,” which is a steep drop that Story recalled had a different use back in the day. “We ate alot of meals out of cans, and if you can believe it, we’d get rid of our cans down there,” he added. “You’d hear the darn things clank, clank, clank for about a minute or more because the drop is straight down.” But during the helicopter ride, the peak’s face gave the men a guideline for a slow assent up to the weather station site. “Sure enough we edged closer to the mountain and were were looking right at the Goat Hole, maybe 20 feet away,” said Story. “We were climbing, climbing and pretty soon we were looking for one clue as to where we were and sure enough there it was - the trail made by the horses when they came up with with supplies.” After inching a bit further, the chopper landed about 200 feet from where the observatory once stood.
“I had been looking forward to it (helicopter ride) since I heard the plan and was tremendously excited to go back,” Story said. “It was quite thrilling and after all these years, something I never dreamed of being able to do.” He worked on Old Glory for three years, and for one of those years, took his young school-teacher wife up for their honeymoon (they are still married today). “We were both from Manitoba,” he said. “And to be able to live out in B.C. on top of a mountain, was a dream come true as far as I was concerned,” he laughed. “I took her away from her job in Winnipeg and she found it very hard when the sun went down at three o’clock. But she’s a joker, and would wake up in the morning saying she heard a car.” Following his service, Story moved out of the area and now lives on the coast near Syverson. Syverson has family in the Alpine City, and past visits included a hike up Old Glory in warmer weather. But his last trip up the Rossland Range in the cold, was during a wicked snowstorm in January 1968 - the year the weather station went up in flames. “I was working in Trail and got the phone call that something was wrong up there,” he explained. “They asked if I would get a couple of people together and go see what happened because they couldn’t get hold of the operator.” Syverson recalls climbing the mountain on a rescue trip, the acrid smell of smoke, and sensing something terrible had hap-
pened. After a five-hour trek, the rescue group found the lone station technician alive but hypothermic in a nearby unheated forestry shelter. They huddled throughout the night, using body heat to keep the man alive. Once the storm passed the next day, a helicopter shuttled them to safety. The observatory was never rebuilt and weather observing became a job of the past. The world moved on as airports were equipped on-site with contemporary weather recording instruments. Following their Old Glory stints, Story and Syverson continued with careers in weather - though nothing compared to the to living on a rugged mountain for one year at a time. Time off was given at month end, but that meant strapping on skis and heading into Rossland for a few days of reprieve before hiking back up no matter how hard it was snowing. “You worked all the rest of the time,” said Syverson. “It was 24 hours a day seven days a week with no time off. “But you didn’t need time off because there was nothing else to do sitting inside that cabin,” he laughed. “Normally the weather was so bad you couldn’t get outside except to poke your head out and take a weather report, which took maybe five minutes. “ So, why did he do it? “I was going to high school in Rossland, that’s how I got to know that Old Glory was a weather office,” he said. “And getting to know the men on Old Glory and what they did - that was all I ever wanted to do.”

Kootenay McDonalds Landing named for Montana man Artisan Fair GREG NESTEROFF
West Kootenay Advertiser
One-hundred twentieth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names McDonalds Landing on the North Shore of Kootenay Lake was named after Duncan A. McDonald from Tobacco Plains, Mont., who filed a pre-emption for Lot 4396 on July 7, 1894. He had mining claims around Nelson beginning in 1890-91, but other than that we can’t say much with certainty. The 1898 BC voters list has 11 men named Duncan McDonald, including carpenters in Nelson, Kaslo, and Lillooet, a miner in Kaslo, and a Nelson rancher, who is presumably our man. He might have been the Duncan McDonald who in the 1870s was in charge of a Hudson’s Bay trading post and for whom Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park was named. McDonalds Landing appeared on the CPR timetable by May 1914. The floating wharf was about 6.5 miles east of the Nelson ferry landing, or 7.5 miles east of the Nelson city wharf. Until recently a sign designated McDonalds Landing as a federal government wharf. However, it was transferred to the Regional District of Central Kootenay in
A division of
2012. The area is now much more commonly known as Six Mile. McGUIGAN This stop on the Kaslo and Slocan Railway, also known as McGuigan Station and McGuigan Siding, was named for John George (Jack) McGuigan (18581901), one of the group who staked the Noble Five and other claims on Payne Mountain at the start of the Silvery Slocan rush. According to Don Blake in Valley of the Ghosts, “When the K&S put their line through to Sandon in 1895, they put a siding in at McGuigan Creek and called it McGuigan’s Siding, later dropping the S.” McGuigan appeared on the first K&S timetable, dated Nov. 25, 1895, and was also mentioned in the Victoria Daily Colonist of March 19, 1896: “On Wednesday a gang of snow shovelers on the K&S railway got up on the snow bank at McGuigan siding to allow the Sandon express to pass.” An application for a post office at McGuigan was filed on Oct. 6, 1896. It opened May 1, 1897, closed in 1904, reopened in 1906, and closed again in 1910. The name is no longer widely used, although McGuigan Creek — which appears on Perry’s Mining Map of 1893, remains on the

Calling all storytellers and Vinyl Café fans — Trail’s version of New York City’s The Moth returns to The Griff at The Bailey Theatre Friday Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Little Moths is based on The Moth in New York City where people gather (standing room only) to hear raconteurs and novice storytellers tell true stories of human experience. Throughout the long, dark hours of fall and winter, expect to meet local writers, natural born storytellers and ordinary people with extraordinary experiences to share. The rules are simple — stories must be true and short. This month’s theme is PLAY. Why is it called The Moth you might ask? Founder George Dawes Green wanted to recreate, in New York, the feeling of sultry summer evenings in his native Georgia, where he and his friends would gather on his friend’s porch to share spellbinding tales. There was a hole in the screen, which let in moths that were attracted to the light, and the group started calling themselves The Moths. Hosted by Almeda Glenn Miller, Little Moths from across the valley and surrounding mountains will make their snowy (more fall-like really) pilgrimage to the warmth and intimacy of the Muriel Griffiths room at the Charles Bailey Theatre. Be prepared to be frightened, enlightened, and delighted with authentic stories from our region. Tickets are $10 and space is limited. Tickets available in person or by phone at the Charles Bailey Theatre Box Office Monday to Friday, 12-4 p.m. Phone 250-368-9669. Please visit www.trail-arts.com for more information. Sign up to tell a story at charlesbaileytheatre@ trail-arts.com or phone 250-231-7943.

Entertainment Members of the Kootenay Dance board are excited about reviving the dance club. Submitted
Social Dance Society revived Gold medallists from left; Back row: Bob Donaldson, Steve Douglas, David Costanzo, Gord Mattson, Rick Borsato, Ron Wilson, Gary Issel, Dallas Fletcher and Frank Bonacci. Front row: Jack LaRocque, Al White, Kelly Moore, Murray Johnson, Kevin Rusnell, Bill Burnett, Luch Dalla Lana, Dan Hill and Rollie Hill. Not pictured: Keith Anderson, Brian Forrest, Ken Kobluk, Ray Pichette and John Trainor.
Celebrating Teck Trail Operations’ 40-year Medallists Trail Operations is pleased to pay tribute to 23 employees who are celebrating a milestone achievement of 40 years of employment with the company. We thank: Keith Anderson, Frank Bonacci, Rick Borsato, Bill Burnett, David Costanzo, Luch Dalla Lana, Bob Donaldson, Steve Douglas, Dallas Fletcher, Brian Forrest, Dan Hill, Rollie Hill, Gary Issel, Murray Johnson, Ken Kobluk, Jack LaRocque, Gord Mattson, Kelly Moore, Ray Pichette, Kevin Rusnell, John Trainor, Ronald Wilson, and Al White, for their long-term commitment to our company. These employees were joined by family, friends and coworkers at a celebration on November 5, 2015. In recognition of their long-term service, they were presented with a medallist’s jacket, a Teck gift, and a 40-year gold medallion, a tradition that dates back over half a century. To date, 1,571 individuals have achieved 40 years of service. The longest service employee was William “Mystery” DiPasquali, who holds the record of 52 years of service to the company, achieved in 1967.
At a recent AGM of the Kootenay Dance Beat Society (KDBS) a new board of directors was formed after a two-year hiatus. The new slate comprises: Danny Rondeau, president; Sandra England, vice-president; Deb Corbett, treasurer; Jude Milne, secretary along with four directors-at-large: Evan McKenzie, Maria Baula-Schuh, Fran Wallis and Martha Stokoe. Ingrid Love is the society’s youth liaison. This enthusiastic and multi-talented team is looking to provide more regular social dance opportunities, in the Nelson area. To kick off their tenure a Social Dance and Membership Drive event is set for Saturday, Nov. 21 at the newly refurbished Taghum Hall. Entry to this DJ event will be $10, which will include the Annual Membership fee to the non-profit society. The primary goal of the society is to provide frequent opportunities for
people of all ages to learn new dances, practice their dance skills, meet new people and socialize. “Society events provide wonderful place to make new friends, get exercise and have fun, all at the same time,” says past president Fran Wallis. Everyone is welcome to attend. The evening will get underway at 6:30 p.m. with a potluck (snacks and appys), followed by a beginner/intermediate Swing mini-lesson and social dancing until 11 p.m. The music will include a good mix of Latin, smooth, swing and a little bit of country. Future society plans include an official launch-party with live music to celebrate the society’s new year. Members’ benefits include discounts on the live band events and sponsored instructional workshops as well fostering social dancing in the area. For future society events please visit Kooteany Dance Beat on Facebook.

Montrose voters could be headed back to the polls in January following the resignation of Coun. Mark Reid. Reid handed in his letter of immediate withdrawal two weeks ago, citing outside commitments became too great to fulfill requirements of his role on the fourmember council. With three years remaining in the municipal term, under the Local Government Act, the village is required to hold a byelection to fill the vacancy.
Monday night council was the first reconvening of all members since the resignation, and the first order of business was to appoint a Chief Elections Officer (CEO) — a position accepted by Bryan Teasdale, Montrose’s chief administrative officer. Once the CEO is officially in place, a general voting day must be scheduled on a Saturday, and within 80 days of the appointment. First, a notice of nomination has to be published, and that will begin Thursday and run for one week. The actual nomination period opens
Dec. 1 and closes Dec. 11. If only one person steps forward, the position will be filled by acclamation. Conversely, if no one signs up, then a call for nominations must be repeated until someone steps up. However, if last year’s municipal election is any indication of interest, when seven residents ran for the four council seats, and two for mayor, Montrose voters could be casting ballots as early as Jan. 6. That Wednesday fulfills the required advanced voting opportunity, followed by General Voting Day on Jan. 16, and the winner announced by Jan. 18.

Digitized newspapers GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
The University of BC has placed more digitized West Kootenay/Boundary newspapers online, a boon for local historians. The latest additions include the British Columbia News of Kaslo, Cascade Record, and Nelson Daily Canadian, plus short-lived papers like the Arrow Lakes Advocate, West Fork News of Beaverdell, and Slocan Prospector of Three Forks. Most date to the 1890s or
early 1900s. They can be browsed by date or searched by keyword at https:// open.library.ubc.ca/collections/ bcnewspapers. The BC Historical Newspapers project rolled out in 2011 previously granted digital access to the early files of about a dozen local newspapers including the Nelson Miner, Grand Forks Sun, and Phoenix Pioneer. In all, you can now search 94 papers from across BC and 29,146 editions ranging from 1865 to 1989.
We need carriers in your area!
The Brooklyn News, published in a Lower Arrow Lake boomtown in 1898, is one of many new titles that you can now browse and search online. Courtesy University of BC open collections

Theatre during a historic showing of Salt of the Earth. The 1954 film, blacklisted not only because the filmmakers had been exiled from Hollywood under McCarthy, but because it supported the labour movement, was first shown in Castlegar 60 years earlier in 1954. Verzuh is a published labour historian and a current PhD student at Simon Fraser University. His thesis, which is currently in progress, is titled The Smelter Wars and is about “the changing social relations that occurred in 1937 to 1955 in Trail.” “I call it The Smelter Wars because the late days of the Depression led to a union organizing campaign, and that campaign lasted for the entire length of the World War, after which there were continuing disputes and wars, including the Cold War and… the Korean War in the
early ’50s. So it was quite a war time period all the way through either philosophically, on the political level, or just people shooting each other.” A lot of the soldiers returning home to Trail ended up working in the smelter and eventually formed a union, Mine-Mill Local480 (now the United Steelworkers), and it was this union that organized the first screening of Salt of the Earth in Castlegar. At the time the film had not been shown in more than 13 theatres across the continent because it had been blacklisted. Local480 had tried to show the film in Trail, but both theatres there declined, ironically because the Projectionist Union had threatened to ban any projectionist who showed the film. Remembering Salt is part of a trilogy of documentary films focused on history in the Kootenays.
Ron Verzuh visits the CUPE picket line during filming of Remembering Salt. While the research behind the films came out of Verzuh’s PhD work, the impetus to make the films was also deeply personal. “Growing up in that area, these were things you hear about, right? Your dad and mom would talk about things that are the subject of my trilogy of films and I was curious as I got older whether there was any truth to any of it and what it meant. What it meant on a larger geopolitical scale,” said Verzuh.

Aries, you may need to exercise a lot of patience this week. Practice some deep breaths, and find some relaxing music to keep you calm. Your patience will pay off.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Avoid any deep entanglements for the time being, Virgo. You need to keep things light until you are able to devotemore time to your various relationships.
Take some time now to make home life a priority, Aquarius. You have been going hard at work lately, but now is a great time to make family a bigger priority.
