New Kimberley signs get the message across C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The new city sign at the Wasa junction is certainly hard to miss. It’s large, it’s red and it has a simple message: An arrow points in the direction of Kimberley on 95A — good times. An arrow directs you east and south on Highway 95 — everything else. The sign is directed specifically to tourists, says Mayor Don McCormick. “We want to provide a message to tourists, it’s an effort to get them to check Kimberley out. The fact is that people these days travel point to point. They are using GPS, and GPS tells you to bypass Kimberley because its not on the major highway. We need to give them a reason to go to

City CAO Scott Sommerville has provided Council with a bit of a post-mortem on the SunMine construction, and the first four months of operation. Sommerville reported that the budget to construct SunMine was $5,350,000, including a contingency of $97,398 or 1.8 per cent. The final cost of construction estimates are $5,621,189; 5.1 per cent or $271,189 over budget. He explains that the primary reasons for the cost overrun were: • Issues with interconnection to the BCHydro grid related to unclear technical language in the construction contract • BCHydro’s require-

ment for a revised interconnection study when the project was downsized from 2 MW to 1 MW • Road upgrade with asphalt grindings ($59,922) to improve road conditions for tours and to minimize future operational costs related to dust control and panel washing. He also said that one of the things learned from the construction phase was that a 1.8 per cent contingency is not enough on a project of this complexity. A consulting engineer was brought on late in the project and Sommerville believes if he had been brought in earlier, costly oversights in the contract related to interconnection could have been avoided. The project also had less than expected revenue in 2015, mainly because it didn’t begin operation until June. See SUNMINE, p. 3

There are four different signs for the four area billboards. Kimberley.” The message ‘good times’ is nebulous as well, McCormick says, not pointing out any specific activities. “Good times is a

catch phrase for Gen X and Gen Y. This is designed to drive visitors to Kimberley. We need a simple message. The message is good, it doesn’t dis Cranbrook.

There’s lots of good in ‘everything else’. “We had requested having new directional signage put at Wasa almost a year ago and we still don’t have that up.

On November 11th 2015 Cranbrook RCMP and the Cranbrook Fire Department jointly began an investigation into a fire which started on the roof at Laurie Middle School. On November 18th, 2015, after an exhaustive investigation, Cran-

brook RCMP took a 14 year old youth male into custody for arson. The youth male has since been released and is on a curfew. The youth male is next to appear in court on December 7, 2015. Cranbrook RCMP would like to thank the Fire Department, school staff and students of Laurie Middle School for their assistance during this investigation.

The 1938 Cranbrook Pioneer’s Reunion It was a grand plan. Bigger than big. The biggest celebration in the history of the city, ever. It was the 1938 Cranbrook Pioneer’s Reunion, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the coming of the railway to Joseph Prairie. And why not, after all? The chance doesn’t come often. If you wait too long the people are gone. Memories on the wind. As it was, many of the Cranbrook pioneers of the days of ’98 were now in their sixties and seventies. It would be, for many, a final chance to renew old acquaintances and view the changes in the old burg. And there were changes, lots of them, from a one-horse town to a thriving city, from wagons and lamplight to automobiles and neon, telegraph to radio, dirt to pavement and wood to cement. Why not take a moment, or six days worth of moments for that matter, “… when the time is opportune to pause in retrospection and take stock of what

streets, beautify the parks and plant a cornucopia of vegetables and flowers “to greet the eye with a blaze of colorful blooms, the intermingling beauty of which titillates the senses.” Cut the lawn, brush the dog, buy some new clothes, leave the porch lights on and have company over. Just do it up right. Send out a ream of invitations and then sit down and plan six days worth of things to do in the first week of September, 1938. It’s safe to say that the entire town chipped in and pulled together under the direction of the Cranbrook Pioneer Association. Citizens opened their doors to provide additional room and board for the crowds that came in droves. Hundreds of old-timers returned along with friends, relatives and sightseers; people from across Canada and the U.S. of A. The programme began on Monday, September 5th, with a baseball tournament, a children’s parade, bicycle

and foot races, boxing matches, a bowling tournament, horse shoe pitching and a dance at the Blue Bird Inn. It ended on the following Saturday with a grand fireworks display, a torch light parade along Baker Street and the singing of Auld Lang Syne at midnight and, in between, the town celebrated at a relentless pace. The Gyros held a carnival every night on Baker Street until one a.m. There were competitions featured marching bands from throughout the district, teas and dinners, smokers, dances, bowling tournaments, school pageants and fire brigade and military demonstrations. The old auditorium was booked solid with lodge, railway and pioneer banquets, fun fests and concerts. Fernie declared Thursday a civic holiday in honour of the celebration. Thousands took in the Grand Parade, led by the fire truck, the RCMP, the B.C. Provincial Police, the Kimberley Pipe Band and the

Cranbrook City Legion Band.

JANUS:

Then & Now

Jim Cameron The thirteen-ton mineral display was a big hit, drawing over 12,000 people to City Hall council chamber where it was held — an impressive turnout for a town of 3,000 people. The Curio Exhibit in the Masonic Hall (now the Studio) did equally as well, featuring numerous displays including a pipe used by Louis Riel as a “gun” to escape from prison, a chair once belonging to actress Lily Langtry, ancient Roman coins from an England farm field, Syrian currency dating to the 13th century, a piece of wood from

Palmer Creek inscribed 1865, a watch worn at the battle of Waterloo and a typewriter with separate keys for small and capital letters upon which A.B. Grace typed much of the old Prospector newspaper. The big show at the Arena Rink, opened by Cranbrook pioneer Senator J.H. King, included a brilliant flower and vegetable show, handicrafts and cooking, all manner of fowl from roosters to racing pigeons, fossils, butterflies, photographs, and booths of electrical gadgets including a radio display by the many enthusiasts gathered for the town’s first “Hamfest.” The Rod and Gun Club exhibited two very young fawns drinking milk from baby bottles, wild ducks and geese, a tank of varieties of trout and an eight-month-old brown bear. On the civic side of things much of Friday was dedicated to the arrival of Sir Edward Beatty, president of both the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Dominion

Boy Scouts Association. Sir Edward was driven into town by a handpicked local train crew, escorted to Baker Park by a Boy Scout honour guard and promptly declared a Freeman of the City of Cranbrook, the first recipient of the honour. Throughout it all the weather was fine, a perfect fall for those in the autumn of their years. And then it was over. The crowds headed home, leaving the city little worse for the wear and much greater for the experience. The final accounting showed a total income of $10,619.46 (well over $200,000.00 by today’s standards) and a total expenditure of $10,425.01. All told, the 1938 Cranbrook Pioneer’s Reunion made a total of $194.45 in cash and a bank full of memories.

Cranbrook RCMP responded to a complaint in which a female was reported to have committed as assault at the Cranbrook Addictions Services Society. Prior to police arrival, the female fled the scene in a vehicle. The vehicle was located a short distance away and Cranbrook RCMP members attempted to stop the vehicle with emergen-

cy equipment activated. The driver attempted to flee and purposely collided with two police vehicles in the process. Despite the attempts to avoid capture the female driver was taken into police custody without further incident. She is currently in custody awaiting an appearance in court for charges of Assault, Cause Disturbance and Dangerous Opera-

tion of a Motor Vehicle. There were no injuries to any of the officers or the female driver and damage to the vehicles was minor. Cranbrook RCMP are requesting that any persons who witnessed today’s events contact the RCMP detachment at 250-4893471 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Summing up the SunMine From Page 1 It had first been forecast it would begin in January of 2015. This resulted in lost revenue of almost $90,000. The delay resulted in a corresponding delay in operational and borrowing costs, which offset some of the lost revenue. Sommerville recommends that future contracts should include bonuses for finishing early or penalties for finishing late. From the report: Production to Date: Since the commencement of commercial operation on June 22nd to October 31st (19 weeks) the SunMine has generated 752.5 MWh of electricity into the BC Hydro grid. This has resulted in $88,610 in revenue to the City under the 25-year Electricity Purchase Agreement (EPA) with

BC Hydro. Revenue for Jan 1st to Dec 31st, 2015 was projected to be $213,694. A simple method of anticipating annual revenue is by prorating the first 19 weeks to a full year, (19/52 weeks) which projects to revenue of $242,507. Energy production to date has been 82.5% of projections. community. Sommerville said the cost overrun was still not completely clear but if it did turn out to be $271,000, then $200,000 would come from the reserve fund and $71,000 from operating revenue from the first six months.

This year due to the fluctuating water levels at Idlewild, the lake will remain closed to the public for the entire season. Signs will be in place throughout the winter months asking people to please stay off the ice. Public Works will be installing outdoor ice surfaces at Baker Park and also at Pop Price Park this year as soon as the temperatures allow.

New Ktunaxa language apps The Ktunaxa Nation is celebrating the release of a number of Ktunaxa language mobile apps aimed at building Ktunaxa language usage and proficiency in children and adults. “The Ktunaxa Nation is one of the Indigenous speech communities leading the way in developing new resources for language learning in today’s world,” said app developer Dr. Christopher Horsethief. “The Ktunaxa language is critically endangered

with less than 30 fluent speakers left in Canada. Research has shown that young children are able to develop language acquisition skills at an astonishing rate so it is vital that much of our revitalization efforts are aimed at young Ktunaxa children. We also want to ensure that Ktunaxa adults have resources to learn and build language proficiency as well.” “These apps have been developed with the support of the Ktu-

naxa Nation Council Traditional Knowledge and Language Sector and are available free of charge,” continued Horsethief. The Ktunaxa language apps released include interactive story and coloring books, puzzles and keyboards for Apple devices and a keyboard for Android devices. Cranbrook, BC – Thanks to the incredible generosity of residents across the East Kootenay and the dedication of the region’s health care volunteers, the $1 million goal for critical care equipment for East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s new Intensive Care Unit has been achieved. Outstanding contributions came from the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary ($450,000), the Kimberley Health Care Auxiliary ($90,000), the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary ($50,000), with remaining funds coming through public donations and stewarded by East Kootenay Foundation for Health. “The success of this campaign highlights the overwhelming generosi-

ty of health care donors and the remarkable collaboration of our health care auxiliaries and the foundation,” said Erica Phillips, Interior Health’s Acute Health Services Administrator for East Kootenay. Interior Health is entering the final phase of construction of the new intensive care unit and major electrical upgrades to EKRH. This new addition to the hospital replaces the current four-bed unit and also includes two new, high-acuity beds. These additional two beds will help relieve pressure on the ICU and preserve resources for the most-critically-ill patients while providing a high level of care for those in need, allowing more patients

from the East Kootenay to stay closer to home more often. The $1 million donor-driven community fundraising campaign to purchase the critically needed intensive care equipment is part of the broader $20 million ICU/Electrical Redevelopment Project at EKRH. The government of BC is funding approximately $12 million and the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District is providing approximately $8 million. With all the essential funding in place equipment is being ordered and installations commencing with a timeline to coincide with the ICU commissioning scheduled for the spring of 2016.

Municipal Finance Authority of BC and there will be no right of renewal. The city will likely arrange the loan in December 2015, with debt servicing beginning in 2016. The annual principal and interest payment over the five-year term is estimated at $79,500. Coun. Tom Shypitka asked for clarification on the portion Regional

District of East Kootenay pays. CAO Wayne Staudt noted the RDEK will contribute on the full amount. “They are responsible to pay 20 per cent of the $375,000, plus any interest,” Staudt said. “Their portion of the annual payment is about $16,000.” Coun Ron Popoff asked whether this was all the funding that was needed for the facility to be ready to go. “There might be some need down the road for some training equipment and things like that, but the facility — the building itself — will be finished,” Staudt replied. In 2013, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services completed a design concept and cost analysis for a new fire training facility. The building was tendered and awarded in 2013, and construction began in 2014. Staudt noted the total cost of the construction was just over $447,000, when the internal city costs are factored in. The building was substantially completed by December 2014, but some residual work was carried over into 2015.

This is the sign chosen for the billboard between Kimberley and Marysville.

New Kimberley signs get message across From Page 1 What it comes down to is that Kimberley has four billboards and they have had them for a number of years. There’s one at the Wasa turnoff, one on the way in to Cranbrook, one from the south and one between Kimberley and Marysville. They were old and faded and needed to be reskinned, McCormick says.

There are four different signs, all with simple themes. Will any feathers be ruffled by them? “Only if it is taken way too seriously,” he said. “We are fighting the GPS routes and need something catchy to get the attention of tourists who have the time to head to Cranbrook/Hwy 3 through Kimberley.”

$20 million a year to reduce wait for MRI

Approved for payment was finance warrant No.30 in the amount of $20,640. Larger amounts shown were: $6,000, payroll; $7.393, debentures; $983, sales tax; $950, Kootenay Transfer; $534, Yorkshire Corp. (premiums); $699, Imperial Oil. With accounts of $5,000 for Police Contract, $6,000 for Pioneer Lodge and $3,800 to Central Mortgage and Housing, as well as the city’s share of Mark Creek work to be met shortly, the finance chairman warned all departments to be exceedingly careful. We should be able to finish the year in the

black, if we watch all expenditures. On January 7 Kimberley Council will be host to commissioners and their wives from Marysville and Chapman Camp for a banquet by joint installation of civic representatives. Council approved the payment of the usual Christmas bonus to all Social Welfare cases. Payment of $5 to family heads and $2 to single people is on a 80-20 basis with the government paying the big amount. Miss Andrene Baumback has been appointed junior clerk in the City Hall for a three month probationary term. Reports of wilful damage being done by young people in various parts of the city will be investigated. Strict enforcement of curfew will also be requested.

The new hospital bylaw, sent to Victoria for approval, has been returned for a change in the term from 25 years to 20 years or less, and an increase in interest to 5 ½ per cent. Two members of the local hospital board, Administrator S. Simon and the architect P. Smith, are now in Victoria trying to push approval of the bylaw so it may be presented to the ratepayers on election day in December.

RESULTS OF IMMUNIZATION

In reply to a request for information regarding the success of our immunization program, Alderman V. Burrin has received the following reply from Dr. G.A. Gibson, Director East Kootenay Health Unit. “A continuous campaign is carried on in

the East Kootenay area against communicable diseases, immunization being offered at it various Health Centres. The record in the control of these diseases is very good. In the 11 years from 1943 to 1954, dyptheria cases for the Dominion dropped from 2,804 to 208, and the death rate from 287 to 18; Whooping Cough, which recorded 19,082 cases with 418 deaths in 1943, in 1954 showed 11,600 cases with only 96 deaths. Last incidence of smallpox recorded was in 1946 when there were two cases but no deaths. These figures are particularly remarkable considering the tremendous population growth in the same period and illustrate the outstanding success of the immunization campaign.

Waiting up to 36 weeks for an MRI scan is better than in some provinces, but it’s still too long for B.C. patients, and that wait should begin to get shorter by the new year. Premier Christy Clark and Health Minister Terry Lake announced Wednesday that with economic numbers improving in the province, funds to extend operating hours for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines in hospitals and clinics. The extra scans should start to show up by the end of the year, and once the increase reaches $20 million a year in 2019, there should be 45 per cent more procedures done than the current rate. Lake said additional evening and weekend operating hours should be in effect in some regions before Christmas. Where private clinics are available, the health authorities may contract work while they’re recruiting more specialists for hospitals. Dr. Stuart Silver, act-

Converse-

Doomsday Machine (or next best thing) “Of

course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost if you keep it a secret,” said Dr Strangelove to the Soviet ambassador in Stanley Kubrick’s classic film of the same name. Fifty years later, it would appear that the Russians have finally watched the movie. In Kubrick’s film, a rogue American air force commander orders a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union — but he doesn’t know that the Russians have built a Doomsday Machine that will automatically explode and spread lethal radioactive contamination all over the world if American nuclear weapons land on the USSR. So everybody dies. Moscow doesn’t want the United States to make the same mistake in real life, so it has just let us know that it is building a mini-doomsday machine. It wouldn’t destroy the whole world, just a half a continent or thereabouts — like, say, all of the United States east of the Mississippi River, or all of China within 1,500 km of the coast. It is awkward to say this sort of thing through diplomic channels — “I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that we can now destroy half of your country with only one explosion” — so the preferred method is to get the word out by an accidental “leak”. In this case, the leak occurred on 10 November in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, where President Vladimir Putin was meeting with his senior military officers. A cameraman for state-owned Channel One television “accidentally” filmed a general studying a poster of a new weapon called “Status-6”, a giant torpedo (a “robotic mini-submarine”, the poster called it) that can travel up to 10,000 km at high speed carrying a huge payload — like, for example, a truly gigantic thermonuclear

weapon. And the film clip was broadcast all over Russia before the “mistake” was discovered. The text on the poster was clearly legible. The “oceanic multi-purpose Status-6 system,” it said, is designed to “destroy important economic installations of the enemy in coastal areas and cause guaranteed devastating damage to the country’s territory by creating wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time.” “It’s true some secret Gwynne data got into the shot. Therefore it was subseDyer quently deleted,” said President Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov. But the complete text and a cutaway diagram of the Status-6 are now available on a hundred websites, and the Kremlin doesn’t seem particularly upset. Indeed, the government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta later reported details of the weapon, without showing the diagram, and speculated that it would carry a gigantic cobalt bomb — just like the Doomsday Machine in “Dr Strangelove”, although a little smaller. The explosive core of the warhead would be a massive thermonuclear bomb — perhaps as big as 100 megatonnes, almost twice as big as any bomb ever tested. Around this core would be wrapped a thick layer of cobalt-59, which on detonation would be transmuted into highly radioactive cobalt-60 with a half-life longer than five years. “Everything living will be killed,” the paper said. Konstantin Sivkov of the Russian Geopolitical Academy helpfully explained to the BBC Russian Service that a warhead of up to 100 megatons would produce a tsunami up to 500 metres high, which together with the intense radiation

would wipe out all living things up to 1,500 km deep inside US territory. This is crazy talk, but the Russians have always lived in fear that the United States might somehow develop the ability to destroy Russia without suffering serious retaliation. And the truth is that the American military have never stopped looking for some way to do exactly that. Back in the 1950s, when US Strategic Air Command really could have destroyed the Soviet Union with impunity, physicist Andrei Sakharov (later the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize) actually proposed a weapon rather like System-6 so that Russia could take revenge from the grave. The latest US gambit is anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defences to be based in Eastern Europe, allegedly to defend against nuclear missiles coming from Iran. But Iran doesn’t have any nuclear weapons, and it may never get them. Yet the American ABM system is going to be deployed in Poland and Romania in the near future. Moscow is therefore convinced that the whole project is really intended to shoot down its own missiles shortly after launch. There is no realistic possibility that the American ABM defences could really destroy all or even most of Russia’s missiles, but that is exactly what Putin is saying to his generals on the sound-track just before the TV clip focusses on System-6. System-6 is not scheduled to be operational until 2019-20, and it may never be built at all. But the old game of nuclear one-upmanship goes on even though the two countries are no longer really enemies. It is pointless and potentially very dangerous, and President Obama might usefully spend the last of his political capital putting an end to it. Reflections on Darkness in the City of Light

We

have had to stop once again to reflect on the awful violence we inflict on one another. Paris, the fabled “city of light,” has been visited by a deep darkness. 129 people were killed, and many others had their lives torn apart by this horrific and meaningless violence. We watched and listened in stunned disbelief to the reports on radio or television. To be honest, my first reaction was a mixture of sadness and frustrated anger. I was sad about how we can be so inhumane towards one another; and I was so deeply angry that my first thought was how we might wreak vengeance on these so– and–so’s. Then I remembered that I am a follower of the Prince of Peace. We live in a world dominated by the view that the only answer to violence is more violence. The way of life on earth is to seek power, and the primary tool for that is to use violence. A natural consequence of that is that we spiral down into ever deepening levels of violence. Jeb Bush called for even greater spending by the US on the military. Never mind that the USA already spends $581 billion on the military — more than the next 10 countries in the world. Ben Carson, who is neck and neck with Donald Trump, has said that the USA must not accept any Syrian refugees. Donald Trump predictably came up with the most outrageous response by suggesting that we have to “bomb the s**t out of ISIS” and that “we should shut down all the mosques” in the US. European ultra–nationalist parties are also talking about closing borders and refusing refugees who come seeking a new home. This kind of ugliness is raising its head in Canada as well: a fire was set recently at a mosque in Peter-

borough; windows were smashed at a Hindu temple in Kitchener; a Muslim woman was attacked in Toronto. Thankfully, Prime Minister Trudeau condemned those acts of violent bigotry. Unlike Republican leaders who cater to the worst instincts in people, Trudeau recognizes that diversity is a strength and “senseless acts of intolerance have no place in our country and run absolutely contrary to Canadian values of pluralism and acceptance.” I was reminded of Martin Luther King, Jr’s words. In the midst of his non–violent protest against the racist structures of his time, he wrote “The ultimate of violence is Rev. Yme weakness that it is a descending Woensdregt spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, violence multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” Some Christian traditions believe that pacifism is the only option for followers of Jesus who is the Prince of Peace. Notably, Quakers and Mennonites have steadfastly held to that position. I do not come from a pacifist tradition. I believe that the perpetrators of the violence in Paris and terrorists everywhere should be opposed vigorously, fought tirelessly and brought to justice whenever possible so that there is less violence in the world. We cannot stand by in silence.

But the church also needs to witness that there are limits to the use of such force. We follow the Christ, who pointed to the kingdom of God as a reign which is marked by compassion and love, grace and hope. Christians have all too often fallen into despair and used precisely those tools of the world to combat violence. They have succumbed all too quickly and, like Peter just before the crucifixion, denied their Lord. There are other ways. We dare not fall into such despair that the only option we can think of is violence. So I will pray. I will pray for the victims, their families and friends, all of whose lives have been torn apart. I will pray for the city of Paris and the people of France. I will pray for governments, that they may make wise and faithful choices as they seek to combat terrorism and extremism of all kinds. I will also pray for the perpetrators of this horrific attack. I follow the One who commanded his followers to love and pray for their enemies. The question is not whether I will love them. The question for me is how. And then, I will also renew my commitment to live in ways of peace and hope. I will continue to be a witness to the One who demonstrated power through weakness and strength through vulnerability, who established justice through compassion and mercy. I will testify to the One who took the pain of the world into his body as he died on the cross. I will testify to the One who was raised again from the dead, showing us that Life is stronger than death, that Love is more powerful than hate, and that Light can quench the deepest darkness. Planning Society, partnering with similar not-for-profit organizations helps to ensure there isn’t a duplication of services, reduces service gaps and helps to identify possible shared service areas. “While networking can achieve these objectives, many not-for-profit employees don’t have a lot of opportunities for networking. Notfor-profits are usually minimally staffed so there’s not a lot of flexibility in their schedules to get together and share information, but most people are able to fit in a lunch break.” And, while the focus of the

The first luncheon was held in May 2015 and focused on the use of digital strategies to help not-for-profits connect with clients and donors. September’s luncheon featured keynote speaker Ingrid Liepa, a process artist, knowledge translator and community builder. This month’s luncheon focuses on programs in the East Kootenay designed to support not-for-profit organizations and features four keynote speakers: Greg McCallum,

Alfaro takes on added responsibility as injuries mount for Ice Veteran Matt Alfaro sports alternate captaincy with leadership core battered; relishing more opportunity as Warriors visit Cranbrook

Taylor Rocc a

When injuries mount, it’s easy to focus on what’s missing from the picture and all too often what’s forgotten is the added responsibility and bigger roles taken on by those left to shoulder the load. Veteran centre Matt Alfaro is doing more heavy lifting for the Kootenay Ice in recent days. With captain Luke Philp and alternate captain Jaedon Descheneau -- both key cogs in the leadership machine for the Ice - out of the lineup due to injury this past weekend (not to mention alternate captain Troy Murray in the stands due to a twogame suspension) Alfaro was sporting a fresh new ‘A’ on his sweater Tuesday night with defenceman Tanner Lishchynsky the lone alternate still available. “Since the beginning of the year when coach and I talked, we talked about the assistant captains and I wouldn’t have a [letter],” the 19-year-old Alfaro said Thursday prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “I said it doesn’t really affect me, it doesn’t really matter. “I know I am [a leader]. Tuesday, I happened to be wearing a letter. I know when the guys come back off the IR and they get their letters back, I know I’m still a leader in the dressing room. It doesn’t matter what’s on my sweater.” With Descheneau not expected back as he is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery at the end of November, the Ice will

forge ahead without his 265 games of WHL experience, leaving plenty of room for Alfaro and his 159-game resume to step in and assume added responsibility on a more regular basis. “I thought Matt played the best game of his time with me here on Saturday night in Medicine Hat,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday. “He’s going to be the guy we need to lean on. He showed some qualities in his game that night that are really encouraging. He’s starting to be more of a positive influence with our guys and pushing people, holding them accountable. “Matt Alfaro is going to be a big part of this team moving forward and into next year. It’s a good time for him to start to act like a leader of our club, because he certainly is one.” Through 22 games to start the 2015-16 WHL campaign, Alfaro has tallied three goals and seven points (0.32 points per game), sitting third in team scoring.

If history is any indicator, an upswing in Alfaro’s offensive output could well be on the way. In 2014-15, the native of Calgary posted two goals and four points through his first 22 games (0.18 points per game), before finishing the season with 13 goals and 33 points in 72 games (0.46 points per game). That output represented brand-new career highs in goals, assists (20) and points for Alfaro. With 29 points over the final 50 games of the 2014-15 regular season, the 6-foot-2, 194-pound pivot was producing at an efficient clip (0.58 points per game) as he helped the Ice dig out of an early season hole and push forward to a 17th consecutive playoff appearance. With the 2015-16 edition of the Ice in a bit of a rut, sitting last in the WHL’s Eastern Conference and 11 points out of a wildcard playoff spot, an upwards trend from Alfaro is needed once again. “From an offensive standpoint, I think ev-

We’ve lacked some finish in that secondary unit, so that’s probably a large part of [his start]. But he’s made some improvements on the defensive side of the game, which have led to more offensive success as well. “He’s got to be more of a complete player that way, where if he doesn’t have guys that are going to finish for him consistently, he has to contribute on the other side of the puck. “He’s brought more intensity. He’s been physical. Those are the types of things that are going to lead to success for him.”

With the Moose Jaw Warriors in town Friday night, sparked by the electricity of captain Brayden Point -- the leading scorer in the WHL -- Alfaro’s defensive prowess will certainly be called upon as a depleted Ice lineup will prepare to shutdown Point as best they can. “I’m logging more minutes, so I’ve got to keep my shifts short and involve my teammates, make my linemates better,” Alfaro said. “The last time [the Warriors] played here, we got under his skin and shut [Point] out. We’ve got to keep doing what we did that game.” While Point was injured Nov. 17 as the Warriors dropped a 4-1 road decision to the Prince

Albert Raiders, Pierce and his charges are preparing as though they will be tasked with shutting down the 19-yearold prospect of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. “We’re going to approach the game that Brayden Point will be playing,” Pierce said. “He’s one of the top couple players in our league and you have to respect that. As a group, we have to be able to shut him down. “They’re a pretty patient team. Similar to what we saw with Everett, we have to look to capitalize on the mistakes they do make and try not to force the game too much.” Puck drop between the Ice and Warriors is slated for 7 p.m. at West-

LET’S FILL THE STANDS!

Ice recall Lieffers to bolster battered forward group Taylor Rocc a

Desperate times call for desperate measures and right now, Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce is desperate for healthy bodies. In an effort to address that issue, the Ice have recalled 15-year-old forward Eli Lieffers from the Saskatoon Contacts of the Saskatchewan Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League. Pierce confirmed the roster move prior to practice at Western Fi-

nancial Place Thursday. “You’ve got to be realistic -- it’s a big jump and a big step,” Pierce said. “But we need some bodies right now and with the development model and where we’re at in the long-term process, I think it will be good for [Lieffers] to get some exposure to it. “We’ll protect him as much as we can in terms of keeping him in situations that are hopefully

going to be situations he can have success in.” With five regular skaters out due to injury and and defenceman Troy Murray set to serve the final game of a twogame suspension, Lieffers will make his Western Hockey League debut Friday night when the Moose Jaw Warriors visit Cranbrook. The 6-foot-2, 155pound Lieffers -- a fourth-round pick (78th

overall) of the Ice at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft -- played one exhibition game with the club prior to being assigned to the Contacts earlier this fall. In 16 games with the Contacts since then, Lieffers has posted two goals and three points alongside 12 penalty minutes. “He’s a smart player. Obviously he’s got some size,” Pierce said. “He processes the game re-

ally quick. For him, it’s got to be kept real simple. Sometimes playing midget, he might be controlling the game a little more. Here, that’s not going to be the expectation for him. He just have to be smart, be effective, be real simple, which isn’t a lot different than what we’re asking from a lot of our players at this point.”

Otherwise, the Ice will once again go without D Troy Murray (serving final game of two-game suspension), D Tyler King (knee, indefinite), D Jason Wenzel (headaches, day to day), RW Jaedon Descheneau (shoulder, four to six months), RW Zak Zborosky (lower body, week to week) and RW River Beattie (concussion)… F Eli Lieffers, 15, has been recalled from the Saskatoon Contacts (Saskatchewan Midget ‘AAA’) on an emergency basis and will make his WHL debut Friday night…

Blue Jays’ Donaldson named AL MVP C ANADIAN PRESS

NEW YORK - Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson has been named the American League MVP. Donaldson hit .297 with a league-best 123 runs batted in to help the Jays to their first AL East title - and first playoff appearance - since 1993. The 29-year-old beat Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout for the honours and joined 1987 winner George Bell as the only Blue Jays players to be named AL MVP.

“Enjoy the club, man,” Bell said in a video message sent out by the Blue Jays. “I’m glad for you, for your family and for Toronto Blue Jays fans.” What was characterized as a close race leading up to Thursday night turned out to be an easy win for Donaldson, who took 23 firstplace votes and seven second-place votes. Trout had seven firstplace and 22 second-place votes, as well as one third-place vote.

Outfielder Lorenzo Cain of the Kansas City Royals was third with 20 third-place votes. Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was a unanimous choice as National League MVP. Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt finished second and Toronto native Joey Votto, a first baseman with Cincinnati, was third. Earlier this month, Donaldson was named a Silver Slugger award

winner for the first time in his career. With files from The Associated Press

But he’s got to play to his strengths and not try to be anything he’s not. He should be fine.” When the lanky native of Saskatoon makes his debut, he will sport sweater No. 26 and have the full support of his teammates as he tries to make the quick transition from Midget ‘AAA’ to the WHL. “You’re nervous your first game,” said Matt Alfaro, looking forward to welcoming Lieffers. “It doesn’t really

If they have any questions, act nice enough so they can come up and ask you and not be afraid. “Help him out during practices, let him know the strategy a bit. Just make him feel as comfortable as possible.” In addition to the absence of Murray, the Ice are set to go without defencemen Tyler King (knee, indefinite) and Jason Wenzel (headaches, day-to-day) as well as forwards Jaedon Descheneau (shoulder, four to six months), Zak Zborosky (lower body, week-to-week) and River Beattie (concussion). Puck drop between the Ice and Warriors is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Western Financial Place.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might feel strange when a person compliments you. Perhaps the comment seems unauthentic or inappropriate in some way. Let it go. Take some downtime, even if it is just an hour or two. You need an outlet for your many ideas. Tonight: Time to do your thing. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Friends will bound in and out of your door. You could find the pace to be rather hectic and chaotic. Your fatigue might become quite evident. A new beginning becomes possible because of the people around you. Tonight: Approach a work-related matter carefully. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Take a stand. A take-charge attitude could backfire if you are not careful. A partner might need to speak with you in private. Don’t worry so much; everything will work out fine. An associate is likely to give you an earful. Maintain a sense of humor. Tonight: Till the wee hours.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Don’t make demands at the present moment. Defer to a loved one. As a result, a new beginning becomes possible. You’ll accomplish a lot if you choose to concentrate on one item at a time. Schedule some time with a family member. Tonight: Consider a visit in the near future. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A loved one might decide to pull the wool over your eyes. Be aware of being naive or too trusting, as it will make you an easy target. Brainstorm with a friend or family member to come up with great weekend plans. Tonight: You might not have a choice. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others seek you out. Though you’ll be flattered, you might feel overwhelmed by everything that is happening around you. A friend could be demanding, but choose not to worry so much. Stay centered, and don’t let this get to you. Tonight: Say “yes” to an invitation. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Tundra

You could be overwhelmed by everything you think you have to do. Communication flourishes, even if you aren’t in the mood to talk. You have a lot to complete and would prefer not to be distracted. Listen to your sixth sense for guidance. Tonight: Hang out with friends. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might choose not to share all your ideas at the present moment. Try to isolate yourself from others, and don’t scatter yourself in every which direction. Use care you’re your spending, as easily could go overboard. Tonight: Time to let your inner child run the show. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Stay close to home, even though this might not feel natural for you, as it will feel better than being out and about. Curb your spending as much as possible, and you will be a lot happier. When you are relaxed, you tend to be a great source of ideas. Tonight: Order in. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Clear communication will settle any potential differences

of opinion. You might want to find out what is going on. You’ll discover that someone else has even more ideas than you do. Your responses will be intuitive in a discussion. Tonight: Meet a friend at a new spot. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Friendship is always is important to you, but be aware of a change of pace. A friend is likely to share a lot more than he or she has in a long time. A partner will help you see the big picture. Express your appreciation for his or her support. Tonight: Make it your treat. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might feel as if nearly any choice you make is the right one. When looking at all your different options, you’ll see validity in each one, which could make it more difficult to decide. Know that this confusion isn’t likely to last long. Tonight: Where your friends are. BORN TODAY U.S. Vice President Joe Biden (1942), former U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (1925), actress Bo Derek (1956)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I would like to know why stores allow people to bring their pets inside. I have seen dogs sitting in the carts with their blankets as the owners push through the store. I often see one particular owner at the same store. She appears to like the attention the dog brings, as she stands and talks a lot to anyone who passes. My grandson is allergic to dogs and cats and would get quite sick if he were put in the same cart after an animal has been in it. I have had many cats, dogs, pigs and horses over the years and have loved them all, but would never think to bring them into stores where they could cause someone else to suffer respiratory distress. Maybe these pet owners don’t think about the people they could adversely affect. -- Please Leave Animals at Home Dear Home: Of course they don’t think about other people’s sensitivities. They are too focused on their own. Many stores now feel obligated to allow pets because so many folks claim they are “comfort animals” with legal protection. This is often not the case, but stores are reluctant to challenge their patrons. Instead of expecting others to be more considerate (good luck with that), those with allergies must take their own precautions. Many stores now offer disinfectant wipes for their carts, but we recommend you bring your own, just in case. Dear Annie: I am tired of you saying “try harder” to women who, like me, are past the age of 50 and tired of the sexual demands of our partners. I like sex, provided it is satisfying to both partners. The “slam bam thank you mam” type doesn’t count. I would like a little foreplay. I would like to be touched at other times. I would like to be respected and appreciated. I would like to be given some attention during the hour it takes for the Viagra to take effect and not jumped on when he’s ready. Oh, sorry, I didn’t intend to make this about me. Because it’s all about him. It was all about him when he was 20 and had the sex drive of a rabbit. It was all about him when he was 30 and trying to prove he was adequate. And it is still all about him. There are things I refuse to do because I find them distasteful. There are things he cannot do, and then he blames me for his inadequacies. And he looks at porn online, saying I “don’t give him what he needs.” I refuse to be treated like an object any more. We’ve already been to counseling. It doesn’t work because he “doesn’t need it.” He just wants more sex. -- Tired of Sex, So Blame Me Dear Tired: Our advice to “try harder” is for women whose husbands are kind and loving, but the women’s libido is nonexistent and they have no interest in any sexual activity. This is obviously not the case for you. Your husband seems selfish, and your reluctance to please him has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with feeling unappreciated. Counseling is for you, not him. Try it on your own. Maurice Paul Bouliane “Moeâ€? 1942 – 2015 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Maurice Bouliane announces his passing on Saturday, November 14, 2015 in Cranbrook at 73 years of age. Moe was born on March 12, 1942 in St. Paul, Alberta. Top Ten Reasons to Advertise in a Newspaper 1. Advertise to Reach New Customers. Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.

2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.

3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back.

A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.

4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.

5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.

6. Advertise to Generate Traffic. Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.

7. Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.

8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate. Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.

9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.

10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.
