Summer fires could impact winter road conditions

AIR TIME

SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

Flooded roads, rocks on highways and rural landslides may become a forecast feature in the upcoming months. The West Kootenay region is at increased risk for perilous conditions this winter and spring following a summer of forest fires that destroyed Mother Nature’s natural anchors. “The whole mountainside has been compromised by the wildfires,” explained Ken Lawson, Emcon’s Kootenay Boundary division manager. “That means we lost a lot of the natural anchor that would hold the snow. And we are not sure how the heat is going to affect the rocks, because some of the areas have been heated and that could potentially loosen the rocks.” In August, a large fire in the Paulson Pass decimated 320 hectares of foliage as well as the ministry’s avalanche weather station. Crews from Emcon Services and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure recently dug out 3,000 metres of soil west of the Paulson Bridge and constructed a large catchment area. “That was strictly to try to catch or slow down rocks or snow that could potentially come down,” Lawson confirmed. “The weather station is being replaced, and avalanche techs with the ministry are monitoring the area with the change of terrain.” He said another area of concern, especially when the snow melts, is Rock Creek. Almost 4,500 hectares went up in flames three months ago, leaving the region in a hygroscopic state. Hygroscopy refers to the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment. In the case of wildfire, that means the loss of vegetation and tree root systems has significantly impacted water absorption and retention. “So the other issue we are going to have in Rock Creek as well as the Paulson, is the water runoff is going to change because of the burnt soils,” Lawson explained. “It’s not going to retain the moisture it used to so we are expecting larger runoffs and more materials to move with the water. So there is potential for the over-running of drainage systems and flooding of highways.” CONTINUED ON PG. 3

Planes, trains, automobiles and ships took centre stage at the Waneta Plaza on the weekend during “Model Train Days,” presented by the Golden City Railway Modellers. Though planes, boats and car displays were dismantled Sunday, from Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., shoppers can browse through the group’s intricate models (located next to children’s playroom) from the days when trains still chugged through downtown Rossland.

Funding secured to highlight Lower Columbia tourism VALERIE ROSSI Trail Times

Promoting tourism in the region as a whole, makes a lot of sense to Deanne Steven of Tourism Rossland. She has been leading collaborative work in the Lower Columbia with continued financial backing, most recently just over $183,000, from Community Directed Funds administered by the Lower Columbia Community Development

Team Society. “We’re working on this theme to get people to stay longer and spend more while they’re here,” she told the Trail Times. “That’s kind of what our overriding theme throughout this has been.” The direction of newly announced funding started with Destination BC facilitating a strategic planning session, where a wide-range of stakeholders, including politicians, businesses, arts councils, golf

courses and others in the tourism sector got together to talk about their future. The funding will allow Tourism Rossland to extend and build on initiatives already deemed a success, like the Google Business Photos and View Virtual Project that saw 57 businesses and organizations in the Lower Columbia further develop an online presence this past summer. “It’s going to benefit all of us, I’m totally CONTINUED ON PG. 2

Having high-resolution photographs showcasing all the communities will further portray what the area has to offer, according to Steven,

Bringing more people into downtown can be achieved with development right along the river, according to Trail’s mayor. But how to increase density with development without taking away parking is what

the city is grappling with, especially since it’s envisioning condominiums atop storefronts along property that is currently two parking lots on the Esplanade. “I think the thing that we really need to focus on and continue to focus on is increased density downtown,”

Collaboration is the common thread between projects like a golf initiative selling the area’s fairways as a package, video content piggybacking the photo bank, and an events calendar in mind. “We are dreaming of a central events calendar for the whole region so we can post events to market them internally and externally to make it as simple as possible for event organizers and to allow a certain degree of collaboration,” she explained. Getting every community on one page will ensure there is no overlapping of events, but rather coordination to attract that customer looking to hit the endless stream of community craft fairs, for example. said Trail Mayor Mike Martin Tuesday. “But at the same time we’ve got another issue that we need to address, which is parking, and we heard that loud and clear through a business walk and through our other contacts in the downtown area.” The concept of mixing residential into an urban setting surfaced during early talks at the Downtown Opportunities and Action Committee table. The idea was later included in an action plan that was looked at by the council of the day, which purchased the properties with a project of this kind in mind. The city has had the properties up for sale

with Century 21 for several years. There has been limited interest though, said Martin, because possible remedial action may be required due to some historical slag located below ground level on the two lots. “We’re just working our way through those details with a detailed environmental assessment and geotech assessment and with that we’ll hopefully have the situation more readily defined, which will make it more attractive to a potential developer,” explained Martin. The block could feature this mixed development, which would lead to the city’s white garden and the planned new library/museum.

Dreaming up this new block wouldn’t be complete without thinking of alternative parking opportunities should one or both properties be developed. “This is a major focus for council, and one in which we believe supports the initiative of some development on the Esplanade, where we would have increased residential accommodation in the downtown core, and that would provide for naturally some increased foot traffic in the downtown and utilization of facilities and services in the downtown area,” he added. But the question remains, where else can the city put more parking?

Christina Lake landmark burns to the ground BY CR AIG LINDSAY Grand Forks Gazette

Top photo courtesy Lakeview Motel/ (Bottom)Jim Bailey photo

The Crow and Bear Pub in Christina Lake was engulfed in flames early Saturday morning. By the time fire crews responded to the blaze, most of the building had been destroyed. The popular bar, which used to be called The Time and Place, has been part of the community for decades.

A Christina Lake institution has burned to the ground. At about 4 a.m. Saturday morning the Crow and Bear Pub caught fire and in a short time became completely engulfed by flames. After investigating the scene along with Grand Forks Fire/Rescue fire chief Dale Heriot on Sunday, Christina Lake fire chief Ken Gresley-Jones concluded that the fire was caused by a wiring issue. “The call came in just before 5:30 a.m. and it was first reported by a truck driver passing by,” said GresleyJones. “The flames were already through the roof when the call came in. I was there a few minutes after and I could see this was already a loss. There was no way we were going to be able to put this out; it was fully involved.” Gresley-Jones said there were two locations where the flames were 20 and 30 feet in the air. “I parked, did what we normally do and did a 360 walk about and by the time I got back to the other side the flames were coming out the walls and through the entire roof—it was gone,” he said.

Gresley-Jones explained that fire departments generally attack fires either offensively where they send firefighters into the structure to put the fire out, or defensively where they surround and drown. “That (defensive) was the only option we had here,” he said. “We weren’t even get close enough to shut the utilities off it was that hot.” The Christina Lake Fire Rescue was on the scene at the Crow and Bear for ten hours. Gresley-Jones said the building is a complete loss. “The roof collapsed inside the basement,” he said. “Everything is down. Nothing was salvaged at all.” Gresley-Jones said that had the fire department been called earlier they could have had a chance at battling the blaze. “It was just the time of day, everyone was asleep and no one noticed it,” he said. “It got to the point where we couldn’t deal with it.” Fire crews spent seven hours on Sunday on site investigating the cause of the fire. Joining the Christina Lake fire crew on site were the RCMP as well as Heriot and one other member of Grand Forks Fire/Rescue.

Emcon preparing for ‘drainage issues’ with uncertain weather ahead CONTINUED FROM PG.1 Emcon has completed proactive measures such as ensuring all highways culverts are clear, in tandem with the usual seasonal duties of stockpiling sand and having snowplows, graders and extra crews ready-to-go.

“We are doing everything we can, but again, we don’t know the type of winter and type of spring we will get,” said Lawson. The El Nino phenomenon is also throwing a wrench into the works, because weather experts are calling for a warmer winter than

usual. “There is no recipe for what’s going to happen,” said Lawson, recalling the winter of 1997 when El Nino increased precipitation and upped normal temperatures. “There could be more rain, more snow, or it could even be drier

depending on where the jet steam gets pushed through and where it’s going to affect. Nobody knows that yet.” he added. “But we are preparing for some drainage issues.” Lawson reminds drivers to shift into winter, travel safe, and check the DriveBC website for updates.

This year’s winter forecast is based on the strong influence El Nino has on western North America. The term itself refers to a massive patch of warm water than appears in the Equatorial Pacific every few years, affecting weather patterns across the world.

ENVIRONMENT

Premiers hopeful Canada can shed international image as environmental pariah THE C ANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Premiers are confident the advent of new leadership in Ottawa and Alberta will allow Canada to shed its international reputation as an environmental pariah. Arriving Monday for their first formal meeting with a prime minister in nearly seven years, premiers praised Justin Trudeau’s willingness to take national leadership on the climate change file at next week’s United Nations climate summit in Paris. And they applauded Alberta Premier Rachel Notley for unveiling Sunday a climate strategy that includes a hard cap on greenhouse gas emissions from the oilsands, which have been labelled “dirty oil” by international critics, including U.S. President Barack Obama, and have become a symbol of Canada’s alleged environmental neglect. British Columbia Premier Christy Clark said the international focus on the oilsands has obscured measures provinces have been taking to combat climate change, including B.C.’s carbon tax which she labelled the best in the world. “We have had a black eye for a long time on environmental issues and we have not deserved it,” she said. “But now we’re getting a chance to show the world really what we’ve been doing all these years and I think they’ll be a little bit surprised.” The first minister’s meeting is not expected to produce any new national target for reducing emissions or policies for achieving it. It is aimed more at demonstrating a new tone in the run-up to the Paris summit. Within 90 days of the summit, Trudeau has promised to hold another formal first ministers conference to hammer out the details of a national climate strategy. Under previous prime minister Stephen Harper, Clark said Canada tended to “talk about economic growth

more than the environment on the international stage.” She predicted Trudeau will do a good job in Paris of emphasizing the country’s environmental stewardship. “We’re really lifting the curtain on Canada’s success to show the world and we can only do that if we have a strong voice on the international stage. And that is a big change for us,” she said. Moreover, having Alberta, the primary oil-producing province, on side in the fight against climate change “is going to tell the world that we really are doing a lot,” Clark added. “It’s really going to make a difference.” Notley’s plan includes imposition of a carbon tax and phasing out coal-fired power plants. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said Paris presents an opportunity to “rebrand” Canada. “Our country needs a serious effort in rebranding on this theme of climate change and energy,” he said. “Not only are we an important producer of oil ... but we’re also the third largest producer of hydro electricity in the world.” With Alberta’s new plan added to measures already taken to curb carbon emissions in B.C., Ontario and Quebec, Couillard added that almost 80 per cent of Canadians are now living in jurisdictions that have imposed a price on carbon. “Nobody knows that in the world,” he said. “It has to be known, it has to be said, it has to be repeated.” While his fellow premiers waxed enthusiastic about Alberta’s plan and Trudeau’s willingness to collaborate with the provinces on the climate file and to champion the issue on the international stage, Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall sounded the one note of caution. He noted that some 30,000 jobs have already been lost in Canada’s energy sector with the

plunge in oil prices over the past year. So, while Canada, including his own energy-producing province, has to do a better job of battling climate change, Wall said: “We can’t forget the economy, we cannot forget the jobs that quite literally are at stake in a sector that’s undergoing a lot of stress right now due to $40 oil. We’ve got to find that right balance.” He was also less glowing than other premiers about Alberta’s plan, remarking only that it “removes an excuse” used by some critics who have objected to pipelines because western provinces weren’t doing enough to combat climate change. Wall reiterated his concern that the Trudeau government has talked about setting a more ambitious target for emission reductions than the Harper government, which proposed last spring a 30 per cent reduction below 2005 levels by 2030. For his part, Trudeau offered no new details as he opened the public portion of the first ministers’ gathering. Rather, he quickly ceded the stage to Notley, giving her a national podium from which to tout Alberta’s new climate plan. “Today we come together in our national capital for the first time in a very long time to speak the truth about climate change, to stop denying there is an issue and to begin doing our part instead,” Notley said. She said the first ministers’ goal should be to make Canada “one of the world’s most progressive and forwardlooking energy producers.” Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair welcomed the Trudeau government’s new tone on climate change but warned that words have to be backed by real action. Conservative environment critic Ed Fast urged the Liberals to make sure Canada’s economic interests are not hurt by ambition on climate change.

Climate vigil in Rossland on Sunday BY TIMES STAFF Residents of Greater Trail concerned about climate change will have an opportunity to show their support during a climate vigil in Rossland on Nov. 29. The vigil, organized by the West Kootenay EcoSociety Rossland team, will be held outside the Rossland Public Library at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 29, which marks the eve of the Paris UN climate summit. People with join a world-wide community demanding Canada joins the effort to reduce carbon emissions and focusing on 100 per cent renewable energy. “With our newly elected government in Ottawa, I am finally hopeful and encouraged that Canada will take a leadership role to address the challenges of climate change,” Rossland Mayor Kathy Moore said in a press release. “It’s a small gesture of Rossland’s support for real change,” “We want to send a clear message of support to our newly elected federal leaders and government to support a renewable energy future,” says Jayne Doxtater, local

EcoSociety organizer in Rossland. “I’m excited that our government has promised to keep global warming below two degrees by the end of the century and they can make that happen in Paris with better commitments.” Montana Burgess, community organizer with the West Kootenay EcoSociety will be traveling to Paris for the summit. “I’m excited to have the privilege to be in Paris for the summit and the climate march,” she said. “In the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris and Beirut, it’s more important than ever that we stand together for justice, peace and dealing with the climate crisis at home in the Kootenays and around the world.” Participants are invited to bring signs and banners with messages of hope for a future with 100 per cent renewable energy and a candle for the vigil. Other West Kootenay events are being organized in Nelson and Castlegar also on Nov. 29. Follow the local rallies, marches and vigils online and share your photos and updates using the hashtag: #KootsClimateRally.

Lights out for opponents of Site C

T

he fall session of the B.C. legislature petered out two days early last week, as the ruling B.C. Liberals and the opposition NDP agreed to turn out the energy-efficient lights and head for home. NDP leader John Horgan skipped the last day and headed to the B.C. Institute of Technology campus in Burnaby. There he announced “PowerBC,” billed as the NDP’s “bold, progressive plan for the future of B.C. energy, with a strong focus on jobs.” Reporters asked, how many jobs? Horgan said retrofitting public buildings and homes for energy efficiency would create jobs all around the province, but he can’t say how many. How much does the plan cost, and does it include subsidizing homeowners to fix their windows and insulation? “The costing will be more apparent when we get closer to the election,” Horgan replied. Whatever the cost, the NDP plan apparently rests on the assumption that the $9 billion Site C dam project on the Peace River can be stopped by an NDP govern-

stopped, using typical arguments to appeal to their low-information donor base. According to the Sierra Club and others, Site C is not renewable energy because the (largely idle) farmland it floods is a “carbon sink.” Forests do store carbon, albeit temporarily, but farmland where the trees have been cleared? This is gluten-free gobbledegook. They also trot out the claim that Site C will be used to power liquefied natural gas operations. Most proponents so far have said they will use gas for LNG processing, and if they don’t have hydro available for ancillary power, they will have to burn more gas. BC Hydro has just finished its latest grid upgrade, a second high-voltage transmission line from Merritt to Coquitlam. It adds disaster reliability to the system that brings power from the Peace and Columbia dams to the Lower Mainland. If you’re arguing that hydroelectricity isn’t renewable power, you’ve already lost. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - There’s a new “Jeopardy!” champion to add to the quiz show history books. Alex Jacob, a currency trader from Chicago, won the $250,000 top prize on the syndicated TV show’s “Tournament of Champions” finale that aired Friday. He defeated paralegal Matt Jackson of Washington, D.C., and Kerry Greene of Manchester, New Hampshire, a volunteer advocate for children. Jacob’s total winnings were $399,802, including from six regular-season games. The top five “Jeopardy!” prize winners of all time range from Brad Rutter with $4.4 million to Dave Madden with $430,000, the show said. Ken Jennings, who has the most consecutive games won, 74, is No. 2 on the money list with $3.3 million. Jacob, 31, said his experience as a professional poker player helped guide his approach, including the heart-stopping big bets that he placed on the show’s “daily double” categories that allow contestants to risk all their potential earnings.

City needs bear-proof bins

Some may have noticed this past year that the city did not put out its two bear-proof dumpsters. That was because garbage bears are a regional problem and city hall feels that the RDKB should become involved also. Last spring the city wrote a letter about this to the Regional

District but the RD never replied. Having no bearproof dumpsters could result in more bears being killed. The Natural Control Alternatives Society (NCA) has shared the cost of the two bearproof dumpsters with the City of Trail.

An editorial from the Toronto Star Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are moving with commendable speed to reverse some of Stephen Harper’s meaner legal legacies, including the Conservative government’s wars on the niqab and citizenship rights. These issues reeked of injustice and fairly polluted the recent federal election campaign. Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould rang down the curtain on the Harper government’s unwarranted and unlawful attempt to prevent devout Muslim women from wearing face-coverings such as the niqab at citizenship ceremonies. The Federal Court of Appeal rightly found the Muslimphobic ban to be illegal, a violation of the Citizenship Act, which allows for the greatest possible religious freedom in administering the oath of citizenship. But the Tories, undeterred, decided to ask the Supreme Court to hear an appeal on the case. Wisely, Wilson-Raybould has now withdrawn that request. The Liberal government has also asked the Federal Court to suspend proceedings in cases involving stripping people of citizenship, as Ottawa consults on a new policy. That, too, is a welcome development. Canadians who scarcely recognized themselves in the Harper government’s narrow, ideology-driven legislation and regulations will hail these moves. Let’s hope this heralds

the start of a broader Liberal course correction that will roll back more of the previous government’s worst excesses. Apart from wrongly targeting Muslim women, the Conservatives brought in draconian security legislation that threatens civil rights. They made it easier for people to be stripped of citizenship. They stuffed the Criminal Code with needlessly harsh and punitive penalties, seeking to tie judges’ hands. They made it harder for people fleeing countries deemed safe to make a case that they are bona fide refugees, and denied them health care. As the Star’s Tonda MacCharles reports, the Harper government’s obtuse over-reach is extensive. Given the growing number of court challenges to these laws, the Liberals should fix what’s wrong, as speedily as possible, then turn their attention to other issues including as physician-assisted suicide, aboriginal justice, the prostitution laws and marijuana legalization. Here are a few places to start: Bill C-51: The draconian Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015, defines threats to security too broadly, co-opts judges to authorize our spies to violate the Constitution, criminalizes free speech, and threatens not only privacy rights but also the right to due process and mobility rights. It needs major revision. The Liberals voted for the law but have vowed to repeal its worst aspects. Citizenship: Under Bill C-24,

the Tories gave government the power to yank citizenship from dual nationals who commit serious crimes such as terrorism, in effect creating two-tier citizenship and validating banishment for select groups depending on their national or ethnic background. The Liberals plan to repeal this obnoxious law. Sentencing: The Tories tried hard to tie judges’ hands by bringing in a slew of mandatory minimum sentences for crimes including those involving guns, drugs and sex abuse. They also imposed a victim surcharge that criminals must pay, even if they have no money. And made it harder to get pardons. The Liberals promise to review much of this. Refugees: The Tories abruptly cut medical benefits for failed refugee claimants and others, even if they cannot go home. Federal Court rightly deemed the new policy to be “cruel and unusual” because it puts lives at risk. The Liberals have vowed to restore the benefits. They also promise to provide an avenue of appeal for refugees deemed inadmissible here because they come from designated safe countries. On Harper’s watch Canadian law grew ever more heedless of civil rights, contemptuous of the judiciary, unreasonably punitive, and unfriendly to minorities and refugees. Canadians voted for something better on Oct. 19. The Liberals have work to do, restoring the public’s trust. The niqab was a start. It must not end there.

House & Home magazine hits Kootenay newsstands BL ACK PRESS The fall edition of House & Home has hit Kootenay newsstands, and inside you can learn about green building, freeing yourself from clutter and the best way to store your wine. “Knowing the average home is saturated with products and processes harmful to personal and global health, I paraphrase Dr. King to say it is no longer a choice between green building and nongreen building in the world, it’s green building and non-existence,” writes Nelson architect Matthew Stanley. In his piece Building Green, Stanley goes through the different certification programs that exist locally for green building, and highlights the work of Carrie Fitzsimons and Dave Oosthuizen. “Building green is about designing for today and for tomorrow,” he writes. Elsewhere in the issue Laurel Collins writes about “how to create a clean canvas for a fresh start to anything you want”. “Creating a clean slate means de-cluttering and this includes all kinds of clutter,” she writes. “Common clutter, as well as mental and emotional clutter.” She offers simple strategies to rid your house of the old magazines, broken toys and junk drawers. Trisha Elliott writes about a dream home in Shutty Bench. “This elaborate blue and white palace of pillars, turrets, angles and contours sits upon an elegant, landscaped property that extends down to a sandy beach,” she writes.

The piece includes an interview with Rick Short, owner of Red Dog Carpentry. Elliott also writes about flooring, and interviewed Wendi Thomson of Maglio’s Building Centre. Other stories in the issue are by Andrea Bell about winter planning and Wendy Kelly on wine storage. House & Home is published twice a year by Black Press.

Merritt-Coquitlam power line completed BY TOM FLETCHER Black Press

250-368-9600 TRAIL » GRAND FORKS » KELOWNA CAMPBELL RIVER » COURTENAY COMOX

A year behind schedule and $18 million over budget, the latest high-voltage line of the BC Hydro grid has been completed from Merritt to Coquitlam. The new line parallels the existing main line supplying the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island from hydro dams on the Peace and Columbia Rivers. It was originally to be completed in 2014, but the main contractor fell behind and BC Hydro used its own crews to complete one of the most difficult portions, a 19 km stretch north of Hope. The final cost for the 247 km line is expected to be $743 million, which Energy Minister Bill Bennett said is about two per cent more than the initial $725 million budget.

“There is an ongoing arbitration between BC Hydro and [contractor] Flatiron Graham as to who’s going to bear the cost of the delay, because the project was delayed by a year,” Bennett said in an interview Friday. It’s the first 500-kilovolt line added to the BC Hydro grid in 40 years, to keep up with demand from a growing southwestern B.C. population and increase reliability in the event of disasters. “You always have the potential for a big avalanche or a mudslide, even an earthquake, to take out one or two of your big transmission lines, bringing electricity in from the two rivers, the Columbia and the Peace,” Bennett said. NDP energy critic Adrian Dix said the project started out with a $600 million estimate, mak-

ing it $125 million over budget. He said it’s the latest in a series of cost overruns, including the Northwest Transmission Line north of Terrace, the Dawson Creek-Chetwynd line and the Iskut extension in the northwest. Bennett said BC Hydro is under-budget on its overall capital construction plan, including $100 million under budget on reconstruction of five generating units at the W.A.C. Bennett Dam on the Peace River, and there is no additional effect on rates. BC Hydro is committed to a capital budget of $2.4 billion a year for the next 10 years, including construction of the Site C dam on the Peace River and reconstruction of the Ruskin Dam in the Fraser Valley and the John Hart Dam on Vancouver Island.

Your family depends on you to arrive safely. Plan ahead. Check weather and road conditions, make sure your vehicle is winter ready and drive for the conditions. Know before you go. DriveBC.ca | ShiftIntoWinter.ca

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The timing couldn’t be better for the International Emmys to honour “Downton Abbey” writer and creator Julian Fellowes as the acclaimed British period drama wraps up its sixth and last season with a Christmas Day finale on Britain’s ITV. Elizabeth McGovern, who stars as Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, and the show’s executive producer Gareth Neame will present the honorary International Emmy Founders Award to Fellowes Monday night at the Hilton New York. “Downton Abbey” was never nominated for an International Emmy honouring excellence in TV productions outside the U.S. because its producers opted to compete in the Primetime Emmys, winning 12 awards and earning the most nominations ever for an international TV series. The show’s final season begins airing on PBS in the U.S. on Jan. 3. “Downton Abbey,” portraying the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants amid the backdrop of such historical events as the sinking of the Titanic and World War I, has become one of the most popular TV shows in the world, airing in at least 150 countries. “We give the Founders Award to somebody whose work crosses cultural boundaries to touch our common humanity,” said Bruce L. Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “It’s amazing with ‘Downton’ - almost any place you go in the world people watch it, like it and refer to the characters.” “In the guise of early 20th century aristocrats and the people who work for them, Julian has recreated everybody so people can see themselves and their situations and their life in these characters.” The presentation to Fellowes will highlight the International Emmy Awards ceremony in which 40 nominees from 19 countries will be competing in 10 categories. Britain garnered a leading seven International Emmy nominations, led by Sheridan Smith, who received a best actress nod for her role in “Cilla” about the rise to stardom of pop singer and TV personality Cilla Black. Rafe Spall was nominated for best actor for his role opposite Jon Hamm in the techno-thriller “White Christmas,” the holiday special of the anthology series “Black Mirror.”

Franchise-low opening for final ‘Hunger Games’

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Mockingjay - Part 2,” the final “Hunger Games” film, soared to a $101 million opening in its first weekend in theatres, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. For most films this would be a coup, but “The Hunger Games” had its own records to beat, and this sets a new low for the four-film franchise. The series starring Jennifer Lawrence kicked off with a bang in March 2012 with a massive $152.5 million weekend - one of the highest openings of all time. “Catching Fire,” the second film in the franchise, one-upped that with a $158.1 million debut in November 2013. Lionsgate split the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy into two films, following the precedent of “Twilight” and “Harry Potter.” “Mockingjay - Part 1” opened on this weekend last year to $121.9 million, considered at the time to be a necessary and expected dip, while fans awaited the final installment, which, if it mimicked “Twilight” or “Harry Potter,” would have snared the second highest (if not highest) opening in the series. With that perspective, a franchise low for the final “Hunger Games” film, which cost a reported $160 million to make, was a bit of a surprise. Lionsgate, however, is not disappointed. “When a franchise is this popular and this successful in this short a time, expectations run very high,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Rentrak. “If we live in a world where a $100 million opening is a disappointment, that’s pretty crazy.” To date, there have been only 34 movies in history to open at over $100 million, and each film in “The Hunger Games” series has hit that massive benchmark. Dergarabedian attributes the showing to a down marketplace. Just two weekends ago, “Spectre,” which fell to second place with $14.6 million, failed to live up to “Skyfall’s” domestic opening, too. Katniss didn’t have the weekend to herself, either. The Seth Rogen holiday comedy “The Night Before” opened in fourth place, behind “The Peanuts Movie,” with $10.1 million, which was within Sony’s expectations.

Smokies win one on three-game road swing JIM BAILEY Trail Times

After a promising start with a 3-2 win over Victoria Thursday, the Trail Smoke Eaters dropped two straight to the Nanaimo Clippers and Langley Rivermen on Friday and Saturday to close out a three-game road trip to the coast. The Rivermen were coming off a huge win Friday, when they broke the Penticton Vees 22-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory. Yet, the Smokies came out strong and took a 2-1 lead on Langley on Saturday, but the Rivermen scored three unanswered goals in the third period to skate to a 4-2 victory. “We came into Langley with a different look, we were moving the puck well and had them on the ropes going into the third period, but we seemed to be on our heels and they put two pucks in the net,” said Smoke Eater coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “It was a little bit of a heartbreaker.” Justin Szeto chipped the puck off the boards past the Smokies’ defenceman, then went in on a 2-on-1, and using Logan Mick as a decoy, the Harvard commit toe dragged around the d-man and roofed the puck on Smoke Eater goalie Bailey MacBurnie for the winner at 6:42 of the third period. Kienan Scott put Trail up 1-0 at 7:13 of the first period, as the Smokies outshot the Rivermen 15-8. But newly signed defenceman Troy Ring netted his first with the Rivermen, finishing off a pretty three-way passing play with Adam Sinclair and Torrin White. Scott added his second of the night and fourth of the road trip on a nice feed from Connor Brown-Maloski to put the Smokies up 2-1 at 16:39 of the second period. “It’s good for him (Scott), he’s found the net a couple times on the power play and scored a nice breakaway goal,” said Deschenes. “We need to find some scoring and if he can get hot right now maybe it can help our group.” But the lead was erased 88 seconds into the final frame on a goal by Campion, who beat

Anthony Galliart was again heroic in the Bruins’ net stopping 39 B.V. shots and getting player of the game honours, while Drake Poirier was very good in the Hawks crease stopping 30 on the night and earning PoG for the Nitehawks. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Garrett Brisbois and Josh Hammett, but the Nitehawks came back to tie it in the second period with Braden Fuller scoring on CONTINUED ON A16

Nelson native to join Nitehawks

BY TIMES STAFF Nelson native and fan favourite Nolan Percival is no longer a Leaf. In a strange twist of fate, an ailing Beaver Valley Nitehawk team acquired Percival less than 24 hours after beating the Nelson Leafs 3-2 in overtime Friday in what would be Percival’s final game for the green and white. “Nolan’s a guy we’ve always watched and like how he plays, and the opportunity came for us to get him and we jumped at it,” said Hawks coach and GM Terry Jones. “He’s a really bright young prospect and we feel his best hockey is in front of him.” The 18-year-old, five-foot-eight, 170-pound forward joined the Leafs as a 16-year-old and played in 125 games scoring 14 goals and adding 26 assists. A character player with speed and skill, Percival will help a Nitehawks team that has been riddled with injury over the past month. The Hawks endured a month without goaltender Drake Poirier who returned to action in Friday’s overtime win over Nelson, and have been without top forwards Braden Fuller, who returned Friday, Sam Swanson, and now Kyle Hope, and are also missing character defenceman and captain Lyle Frank. Percival is expected to join the team this week and play his first game as a Nitehawk on Friday in Creston against the ThunderCats.

SPORTS GREY CUP

Eskimos face Red Blacks

THE C ANADIAN PRESS

The Edmonton Eskimos will meet the Ottawa Redblacks in the 103rd Grey Cup after both clubs won their respective division finals on Sunday. Edmonton will be making its 25th appearance in the Grey Cup and first since winning it in 2005 after downing the defending champion Calgary Stampeders 45-31 in the West Division final. Ottawa, meanwhile, beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35-28 in the East final to book its spot in the title game - just one season after their inaugural campaign. The Grey Cup is next Sunday at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. The last time an Ottawa team was in the Grey Cup was 1981,

when the Rough Riders lost to the Eskimos 26-23. That was Edmonton’s eighth of 13 Grey Cup victories. Ottawa, which won nine Grey Cups as the Rough Riders, ceased operations after the 1996 campaign. The organization was resurrected as the Renegades in 2002 but only lasted four seasons before coming back as the Redblacks in 2014. “I know it’s a big deal and I have a lot of respect for it,” Ottawa head coach Rick Campbell said after defeating Hamilton. “We’ll be happy for a few more hours and tee it up one more time. “Then after that game we can discuss more things about Ottawa football history.” Campbell was only 10 years old when Ottawa lost in 1981 to an Edmonton squad coached by his father,

Hugh. Rick Campbell watched the ‘81 championship game on TV back in Alberta and said his dad did the same Sunday from San Diego. Ottawa went 12-6 this year to finish the regular season in first place in the East after posting a 2-16 record in 2014. Edmonton secured the West with a 14-4 record. Much of the Redblacks’ success came from veteran quarterback Henry Burris, who is the East nominee for the CFL’s outstanding player award. Edmonton QB Mike Reilly missed almost half the regular season due to torn knee ligaments, but came back to lead the Eskimos to nine consecutive wins, including Sunday’s victory. “We got one more to go and that’s the ultimate goal,” said Reilly.

MLS advantage, Columbus and Portland

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBUS, Ohio Columbus’ Justin Meram scored after just nine seconds and the Crew went on to beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 on Sunday in the first leg of the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference finals.

The fastest goal in MLS playoff history put the Crew in a strong position to advance to the league decider. In the Western Conference finals first leg, Portland recorded a 3-1 win at home against Dallas. It was the first time the Red Bulls had been held scoreless

since May 24. Meanwhile, Portland’s Liam Ridgewell, Dairon Asprilla and Nat Borchers all scored as the Timbers beat Dallas 3-1. The deciding games go Sunday, with Dallas and Portland playing at 2 p.m. PT, and Columbus vs New York at 4:30 p.m. PT.

CONTINUED FROM A15 the power play and Jaxon Joseph tying it with 3:47 to play in the middle frame, as the Hawks fired 20 shots at the Bruins net in the period. However, the teams didn’t solve anything in the third as Poirier made several big stops in his second straight start since missing a month of work due to illness, as the Border Bruins outshot the Hawks 13-7 in the final frame. “They (Grand Forks) are resilient, and their goaltending has been great,” said Jones. “We’ve hit a lot of goal posts, and been undisciplined at times . . . and the momentum turns at the wrong times, when you’re all over them

and then someone takes a stupid penalty. Those are the things that kill you.” The Nitehawks welcomed the return of Fuller but iced a short line up with injuries to Sam Swanson, Kyle Hope, and Lyle Frank still plaguing the team. “You miss the consistency of the character too. It puts pressure on other guys, which is good because they need to step up and perform, and take on a bigger role.” On Friday, Blake Sidoni scored the overtime winner to lift the Hawks to a 3-2 victory over the Leafs in Nelson. A back and forth game saw Nelson take the lead at 4:47 on a Matthew Sokol goal, but Fuller tied it on a power play just

17 seconds into the second. The Leafs regained the lead before the period was out when Jordan Davie beat Poirier on an unassisted effort. The Nitehawks hung in and would tie it at two on a Michael Pruss goal with just under three minutes to play to send it to overtime. B.V. outshot the Leafs 34-28 including a 15-7 advantage in the third period, and went 1-for-7 on the power play while killing all six penalties. APs Bradley Ross and Connor Seib filled in for the injured players, and performed well. The Nitehawks next match is in Creston on Friday before returning Saturday for a game against Golden at 7:30 p.m. at the Hawks Nest.

Dear Annie: I have been married for 50 years and don’t think I can stand one more day. The man I am married to was once everything to me. Now, as each day passes, I grow more resentful. I like him less and less, almost to the point of hatred. He has always been a good provider. He worked while I stayed at home and raised our five children. Back then, I would never have expected him to come home and help around the house. But things are different now. It’s just the two of us and our animals. We are in our mid-70s, and I am still doing all of the work inside this large five-bedroom house. He refuses to help with anything. He lies on the sofa and channel surfs while I do everything. There is nothing physically wrong with him. His doctor says he’s in great shape. He shows no sign of mental decline, either. Downsizing to a smaller home is not an option for him. He likes it here. I have told him how I feel time and again, and that I’d like his help around

LOUIS RIEL DAY CELEBRATED

Sheri Regnier photos

Kootenay South Métis Society gathered in the Trail United Church Saturday night, recognizing Louis Riel Day (Nov. 16), celebrating tradition and dining on galette, turkey, and all the fixings. Gabriel Mann played toe-tapping Métis fiddle tunes; after cooking in the kitchen all day alongside a handful of society members, President Myrt Servatius and Director Marilyn Join in our Taylor cut cake; Syd Regnier mashed more than 60 pounds of potatoes peeled earlier that day.
