More input before closing schools – director Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The School District isn’t giving people enough time to have their say about decisions that could have a crippling effect on their lives, according to Jim Abram, Area C (Quadra and Discovery Islands) Director for the Strathcona Regional District. Specifically, he’s worried about the future of Quadra Elementary and Surge Narrows Elementary on Read Island and how a potential closure of those facilities would destroy the communities they serve. The district is taking community feedback on recommendations presented to the board at the Nov. 17 public meeting and include the closure of two elementary schools in the district, until the end of the month. Abram’s feedback is that he thinks there needs to be more time for the communities who will likely be effected by these recommendations to review the proposal before the board makes any decisions. “That’s not consultation,” Abram says. “That’s a joke. There are a whole whack of people out there who want you to talk to them about this, and you can’t do that in that amount of time. “The viability of our communities has already been seriously threatened by BC Ferries fares and service cuts and to now have to consider the possibility of a school(s) closure or reduction in classes will literally kill our communities,” he writes in a letter to the board. “Communities are built around the existence of elementary schools. To even consider closing the ones I have mentioned Continued on Pg. 3

The 41st Rotary TV Auction generated record revenue last weekend. Auction Chair Ian Baikie said, “Our previous best year was about $95,000 and this year we made about $100,000 so that’s a huge win for us. The public came out and supported us, as they do every year and it was really great to see.” Baikie adds that a number of organizations and companies contributed cash donations, which helped increase the final total from the sale of donated auction items. Here auctioneers (from left) Steve Rossner, Debra Cunningham and Doug Reedman take bids at the Shaw community studio.

Schools: Spotlight on facility conditions, low enrolment ment isn’t projected to increase. “I respectfully request that the decision on the staff recommendations be deferred until your January 2016 meeting to give people time to study the proposal more thoroughly,” Abram’s letter says. “Consultation as proposed on a predetermined direction is meaningless and unproductive.” Abram says when considering school closures, you need to also consider the effect on the community itself, and he’s fearful that’s not going to be done – that they are just going to look at numbers on a page. “When you’re looking at closing Pinecrest and

sending those kids to the next closest school, or whatever, that’s a lot different than closing Surge Narrows and leaving them nothing,” Abram says. “You’re basically crippling that community. People will have to sell their houses and move to get their kids an education, and that’s unfair.” Abram says he’s been receiving a lot of feed-

back about the district’s plan, and is hoping to get on the agenda at the Dec. 8 public meeting, where the district is expected to rule on adopting the recommendations, as a delegation to express his constituents’ views to the board. “I represent these people, and they’re upset, so I have an obligation to express that for them,” he says, and he expects that

North Island wildlife lost a guardian Wednesday, and the Comox Valley lost a friend, when Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) founder Maj Birch succumbed to cancer. Birch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on Oct. 6, her 66th birthday. “She was diagnosed just over six weeks ago, and the disease just progressed really quickly,” said Pearl McKenzie, vice-president of MARS. The death came as a shock to many, as Birch remained true to the MARS campaign throughout her short battle with the disease. As recently as two weeks ago, she was campaigning the local government councils for money to go towards the new hospital and a flight pen to help eagles and other wildlife recover. “Maj and I were making delegations to the local governments,” said McKenzie. “She was very committed to helping us raise money for our new wildlife hospital and visitors’ centre. She was very excited about both of them. “She had a number of ideas about the education centre, about how to get kids involved and get them out looking at all the little critters in our waters and on our land.” “She knew, when we

She felt she lived a very good life.” Birch began rehabbing animals in 1987 in northern B.C., and after certification in International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council basic skills, she moved to the Comox Valley with her husband Keith. Maj established the wildlife centre in 1995 on their three acres of property, gaining permits from Canadian Wildlife Service for migratory birds and permits for raptors

and mammals from the BC Ministry of Environment. She completed the exam and MARS became a designated wildlife facility in 1996. McKenzie said that while replacing Birch will be impossible, the MARS mission will be upheld. “Maj was planning on retiring, so she had been, over the past period of time, transferring a lot of her responsibilities to the rest of us,” said McKenzie. “We are a very strong organization. We have hundreds of volunteers, and the core volunteers are just very dynamic, skilled people. So we will take her work forward.”

Our View

Legacy lives on in the wild and free

The central Island lost a truly unique individual last week with the passing of Maj Birch. Birch began rehabbing animals in 1987 in northern B.C., and after certification in International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council basic skills, she moved to the Comox Valley with her husband Keith. Maj established the wildlife centre in 1995 on their three acres of property, gaining permits from Canadian Wildlife Service for migratory birds and permits for raptors and mammals from the BC Ministry of Environment. She completed the exam and MARS became a designated wildlife facility in 1996. Recently she and the organization she created have been pursuing the creation of a new wildlife facility and Birch was tireless in lobbying for local governWe say: Maj ment support throughout Birch created an the central Island region. ongoing advocate MARS has been active in the Campbell River for wildlife area drawing volunteers and supporters from north of the Oyster River. Many a wild bird has been found by residents who knew that MARS was the organization to call. Many of those injured birds were then returned to the area and released healthy and capable of continuing a wild and free life enriching our environment with their return. That was Birch’s legacy, an ongoing organization committed to rehabilitating wildlife and returning it healthy back to the environment. In this day and age of the loss of species, disappearing habitat and the threatened continued existence of wildlife, Birch, through her organization will continue the fight to preserve the wild birds that in many ways symbolize the wild and free nature of life in this beautiful region. Birch was planning on retiring from the operation of MARS, an indication that her legacy could now stand on its on two feet and continue on the necessary work protecting and advocating for wildlife. She will be missed but her spirit lives on the wild birds we see each day in the skies around our communities.

The City of Campbell River really ought to be ashamed of itself. After the strong winds and rain storm of (Nov. 12), the poppy wreaths and stands, photographs and cards had been blown off the war memorial and lay scattered around it in Spirit Square. On Friday people were passing by looking at the total mess and walking on regardless. I did manage to tidy up putting some wreaths back on stands and cards and photographs back where they belonged. My question is where was the Royal Canadian Legion (probably too busy serving the beer) on the Saturday I did call in the Legion and mentioned this sorry state of affairs to a member of staff but it was still in a mess at four o clock. The fall session of the B.C. legislature petered out two days early last week, as the ruling B.C. Liberals and the opposition NDP agreed to turn out the energy-efficient lights and head for home. NDP leader John Horgan skipped the last day and headed to the B.C. Institute of Technology campus in Burnaby. There he announced “PowerBC,” billed as the NDP’s “bold, progressive plan for the future of B.C. energy, with a strong focus on jobs.” Reporters asked, how many jobs? Horgan said retrofitting public buildings and homes for energy efficiency would create jobs all around the province, but he can’t say how many. How much does the plan cost, and does it include subsidizing homeowners to fix their windows and insulation? “The costing will be more apparent when we get closer to the election,” Horgan replied. It’s an odd coincidence that Willson suddenly made this claim, 47 years after the first Peace dam was completed, when he happened to be in court trying to stop Site C. A coalition of U.S. and Canadian environment groups is also demanding that Site C be stopped, using typical arguments to appeal to their low-information donor base. According to the Sierra Club and others, Site C is not renewable energy because the (largely idle) farmland it floods is a “carbon sink.” Forests do store carbon, albeit temporarily, but farmland where the trees have been cleared? This is glutenfree gobbledegook. They also trot out the claim that If you’re arguing that hydroelectricity isn’t renewable power, you’ve already lost. New Ford dealership in the works KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Steve Marshall is building a new Ford dealership. The new facility will be located on the corner of the Island Highway and Woodburn Road, next door to Marshall’s Mazda dealership in north Campbell River. Tom Dishlevoy, architect for the project, told city council at its Monday night meeting the new Ford facility will complement the Mazda dealership and incorporate a similar beach theme landscape. “The landscape features at the two ends of the site represent docks, or piers,” said Dishelevoy to represent that they are “hard at work in a waterfront community.” The docks, which will be set up in the two far corners of the dealership, will feature display vehicles. Landscape plans also include the use of trees, including street trees which will make up part of the city’s Woodburn Road improvements. “We worked fairly hard on our use of trees,” Dishlevoy said. “There’s trees in behind to create a tree-lined driveway and they also screen the service department. There’s also small trees to separate the Ford and Mazda dealerships. We’re attempting to break up the large display of vehicle storage and vehicles there for servicing.” But while the team is working on some degree of separation between the two dealerships, Dishlevoy said there will likely be some shared space, namely the Mazda access. Access to the Ford dealership is also proposed from the Island Highway and Woodburn Road. Coun. Charlie Cornfield questioned why there is no proposed sidewalk for pedestrians along the Woodburn driveway.

Conceptual plans show a new Ford dealership proposed for North Campbell River.

“If I’m waiting for awhile I may want to take a walk down into Baikie Island,” Cornfield noted. He also suggested that Woodburn residents may want to take a walk down to the dealership. Dishlevoy said he would take that into con-

sideration before construction gets underway. Once built, the new dealership is expected to have large floor-to-ceiling windows in the front, with a millennium tower down the middle of the dealership and an arch bearing the Ford logo. A second building is

proposed for the southwest corner of the site to function as storage, but may be developed as a future phase. The main building will contain offices, a showroom and a vehicle servicing/maintenance area. The back half, as well as the south side of

the building, will accommodate vehicle servicing bays. The showroom and offices will occupy the

front of the facility. Mayor Andy Adams told Dishlevoy and Ford representative Karl Edrup, who joined Dishlevoy in his presentation to council, to pass along his appreciation to Ford owner Steve Marshall. “Please pass along my (thanks) to Mr. Marshall for his confidence in investing in our community,” Adams said. Coun. Ron Kerr said he will be glad to have a brand-new building on a lot that’s currently sitting

empty. “It’s great to see that lot will be cleaned up with a sparkling new building,” Kerr said. The rest of council agreed and approved awarding the Steve Marshall group a major development permit, on the advice of city staff. “This scale and type of development is an appropriate form of development of this strip for the foreseeable future,” wrote Matthew Fitzgerald, planner, in a report to council.

Council approves proposal to replace Logger Mike KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

An iconic Campbell River figure is expected be taken off his pole next year. Logger Mike, a longtime fixture in the community, is showing his age and will likely be

replaced after city council Monday approved a proposal from the Shoreline Arts Society for a new Mike. Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, said city staff have been working with Shoreline to develop a

plan to replace the existing Logger Mike with a newly carved statue during the 2016 chainsaw carving competition. “Discussions have also been had with the Canada Day Committee regarding integrating the carving of a new Logger Mike with the 2016

I have looked at Retirement Communities and the services they offer, but it is all a little daunting – I need some clarification.

Wendy Mayers

Community Relations Manager

Independent Living retirement communities offer “hospitality services” such as meals, laundry, cleaning, social and recreational programs, emergency response, entertainment, etc. If one needs a little extra help, an Assisted Living community may be the best choice.

In British Columbia all Assisted Living communities must be registered with the Provincial Government. This does not mean they are funded or run by the government – simply put, the expectation of care services offered are within levels the government believes to be reasonable for these communities.

3x8 Some types of services provided in an Assisted Living environment are: Berwick • Medication monitoring and reminders • Assistance with activities of daily living, such as dressing, PROCESS bathing and grooming

Canada Day events and parade,” Milnthorp said. The proposal is to take Mike off his pole in Tyee Plaza and transport him to the parking lot at Frank James Park where a replica Mike will be carved. The old and new Mikes would then be paraded through the city on Canada Day, July 1. Shoreline is proposing that the city could either hold a silent auction for the old Mike, or he could be taken to the Museum to go on a permanent display. Milnthorp said staff is estimating $25,000 for the the entire project, which would involve costs to take down Logger Mike, ship him, secure and insure the carving area, hire a carver, and secure the proper materials. Council will consider that budget at its 2016 financial planning deliberations which get underway on Dec. 7. Logger Mike, a statue that pays tribute to the city’s forestry roots, is made of yellow cedar and has withstood more than 15 years of weathering. Milnthorp said Mike has been spruced up in recent years but more needs to be done. “It was refurbished

Logger Mike, a fixture in the community, is expected to be replaced next year.

and repaired in 2009 but is now near the end of its serviceable lifespan,” Milnthorp said. “The

pole that the carving sits on was replaced in 2009 during the construction of Spirit Square and is

expected to be functional for several more decades.” Logger Mike first appeared on the city’s skyline in the summer of 1984 when he was carved by Dean Lemke as part of a downtown revitalization project. Since then, old Mike has been taken down for repairs several times, most recently in February of 2008 when he was taken down from his spar pole for restorations. Logger Mike reappeared in October, 2009 next to a brand-new Spirit Square after a nearly two-year hiatus form his spot in Tyee Plaza. Prior to that, Mike was taken down for an outfitting of rope, bolts and support brackets in 1999 and in 2005, for repairs. The iconic Campbell River figure pays tribute to the industry that helped carve out the community and is outfitted in a Santa suit each year at Christmastime. It was during those outfittings that the city became aware of the deteriorating condition of Logger Mike, which prompted a call to the Shoreline Arts Society to see if it would be interested in carving a new one.

Manx fuses Eastern and Western music at the Heriot Bay Inn Harry Manx has spent years fusing eastern musical traditions with the blues. He switches effortlessly between guitar, harmonica, banjo and the mohan veena, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx’s mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Manx is returning to the Heriot Bay Inn Dec. 4-5. Manx blends Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, adds a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves to create his unique “mysticssippi” flavour. He quickly envelops

the audience with his warm vocals and the beautiful melodies of his original songs. It’s hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps audiences coming back for more. Manx has an impressive collection of awards to prove how skilled and hard-working he is. He’s received seven Maple Blues Awards and his mantel shelf also holds honours from the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Vancouver magazine Georgia Straight, and the South Australia Blues Society. He received CBC Radio’s Great Canadian Blues Awards for 2007

and his albums have garnered five Juno nominations. Experience Harry Manx live Dec. 4-5 at the Heriot Bay Inn. Seats are $79 and include a two course dinner; there are a limited number of showonly seats available at $59. Call the Heriot Bay Inn to reserve your seats: 250-285-3322. It’s in the live setting, Manx says, that the bridge between “heavenly” India and “earthy” American blues is most effectively built. “Indian music moves inward,” he says. “It’s traditionally used in

religious ceremonies and meditation, because it puts you into this whole other place. But Western music has the ability to move out, into celebration and dance. “So when we play the Indian stuff on stage, it has the tendency to draw people into something really deep. Then we’ll play some more Western music, and it grounds them, they sort of come out of the mood the Indian music had put them in and get into the performance. My goal has always been to draw the audience as deep as possible into the music.”

Jaybirds weave tradition and high energy J

ohn Reischman & the Jaybirds at the Merville HallLadies and gentlemen, if it’s bluegrass, country and old time music that you hanker after, then John Reischman and the Jaybirds are the players for you. A top-flight band delivering a truly fresh blend of original songs and instrumentals, old-time heritage, and bluegrass power, these musicians will be on fire for your toasty enjoyment on Friday, Dec. 4, at the Big Yellow Merville Hall in sunny, downtown Merville. Reischman is one of the premier mandolinists of his generation. He’s a master instrumentalist capable of swinging between re-inventions

of traditional old-time tunes, deconstructions from the bluegrass repertoire, and compelling original tunes, many of which have become

standards. He’s also a powerful bandleader, touring his band the Jaybirds all over Canada and the United States.

Throughout their show, the bluegrass harmonies are spot-on, and each instrumental break crackles with energy. The Jaybirds cover

songs and tunes from Bill Monroe to Hobart Smith, and also play their original, high energy compositions. The five piece Jaybirds consists of blazingly fast fiddler Greg Spatz; bassist, vocalist and song writer Trisha Gagnon; solid and original banjo player Nick Hornbuckle; and guitarist Jim Nunally, one of the top acoustic roots guitarists in the business. Their live show at the Merville Hall will feature their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material. Add to that the fun of watching the Jaybirds skillfully weave around one microphone, bluegrass style, and the often

humorous exchanges as the next song is introduced, and you’ve got a very entertaining experience. As a special treat, a local band of bluegrass pickers will open the show and get your feet a tappin’. So come on down to the Big Yellow Merville Hall on Friday, Dec. 4 for the Jaybirds Early Christmas Present. You’re

sure to discover some new bluegrass gems and hear some old favourite tunes. And hey, it’s December, you might even hear a few holiday tunes Jaybirds style. When: Doors-7 p.m.; Concert-7:30 p.m. Where: Merville Hall, Merville. Cost: $20/ $10 youth; Long & McQuade, Blue Heron, Music Plant.

recognize the hard work put in by businesses throughout the year and celebrate their accomplishments and stories.” RB C Royal Bank, Hayes Stewart Little & Co. Chartered Professional Accountants and Coastal Community Credit Union are the Gold Sponsors for the event. Category sponsors are Helijet, Thompson Cooper LLP, CIBC and Grieg Seafood. More media fallacies propagated

In the media in the last few months there have been some controversial topics raised. I hope to shed some light on them so you can make more informed decisions yourself. First is the calcium controversy. I wrote an article about this in 2011 and if you look at the websites of Life Extension Magazine you will see their rebuttals to the media over the last 10 years and it plays like a broken record. This controversy is resurfacing just as it did in 2012 and the rebuttals are the same. Calcium is required for healthy bones in the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures. Too little calcium can itself accelerate atherosclerosis so the key message that I give my patients is that naturopathic physicians never give calcium without magnesium, vitamin D and more recently, vitamin K2. Even now you will find calcium chocolate wafers marketed as well as antacid medications that only contain calcium carbonate without any co-factors. These are the forms I would definitely avoid. In the book Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox, written by Dr. Kate Rheaume-Bleue B.Sc. ND, she outlines the importance of vitamin K2 to direct calcium in the body to metabolize properly and not end up calcifying arteries. The best form of Vitamin K2 is the menaquinone

by prescription drugs province-by-province. It is not until you have a family member die at the hands of doctors that you really look at this issue. It has happened to me and to Terence Young who wrote an article in Common Ground, January 2012 “Facts on Prescription Drug Deaths and the Drug Industry.” The other fact to understand is that many of the drug companies now own supplement companies and I find some of these supplements to be irrelevant because their dosages are too low. There is no question that herbal and nutraceutical supplements are useful in treating my patients. The question is dosage, quality and type of formulations. Vitamin K2 MK7 has far reaching health benefits so it behooves you to add this to your foundation for health. According to Dr. Rheaume-Bleue it is the most important antiaging nutrient for fighting wrinkles, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and osteoporosis and promoting straight cavity free teeth and strong bones in children. In the case of vitamin D, if you are not testing, you don’t know if you are getting enough. Most have the erroneous belief that the sun gives them enough to last them all year. 3x7 honda sanjay PROCESS Sanjay began his journey in the auto industry on the lower mainland. At the time he was an mobile insurance broker. He found the process of car sales thrilling and opted to change his path. He’s excited to continue that journey at CR Honda where he loves the product and feels at home.

January’s art work in the 2016 FCA Calendar. Telosky’s paintings reside as far away as Australia, Germany and Texas, but the bulk of his work is nearby, where he paints, on Vancouver Island. Born and raised on Northern Vancouver Island, Telosky worked early on, with pencil

sketches of the tugs, small freighters and fishing boats passing his home on Discovery Passage. He later experimented with watercolours and oil paints, but prefers using acrylics. His many years as a fishing guide, boom man and commercial fisherman, created a strong

connection to the sea. Working boats are his favorite subjects. Telosky finds that the many faces of the sea provide an endless challenge to try and capture. The beauty and strength of the marine scenes of Vancouver Island are both varied and spectacular.

AMPBELLTON Neighbourhood AssociAtioN

Diversity a unique feature of Campbellton By John Twigg, Secretary, Campbellton Neighbourhood Association

One of the challenges facing the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association is how best to reflect the extreme diversity of interests in its relatively small share of the land in Campbell River. A drive around Campbellton can be done in only a few minutes but it will reveal a very wide range of activities and occupants from heavy manufacturing through light manufacturing to home-made art, many large forest service companies, several major tire stores and hardware stores, quite a few varied retail and commercial businesses, several car dealers and gas stations, recreation and fitness facilities, printing and signs, telecommunications, hotels and motels, tourism, and more - including one church (Vineyard). One major theme amongst Campbellton businesses is home furnishings, with several large furniture and appliance stores in the area as well as storage and recycling

businesses, an auction, the ReStore on Willow (featuring used goods and materials) and a thrift store (Salvation Army on Homewood). Among others! One of the most important and perhaps leastknown among the area's businesses is York Machine Shop Ltd. at 1641 17th Avenue, which employs about 35 people producing portable boring machines and other specialty products for customers throughout the United States and around the world. Another notable manufacturer is Daigle Welding & Marine, which specializes in aluminum products and is gaining a wide reputation for its service patrol boats. It's technically located just outside Campbellton because it's across the river at 2177 Island Highway but it still is part of the "Campbellton" trading area, as are several other major businesses there such as E & B Helicopters Ltd. Perhaps surprisingly for a supposedly small ur-

ban area there also is a lot of agriculture and food activity in and around Campbellton, including numerous restaurants (featured

for wild fish stocks (on the Quinsam River), a major grocery store (Walmart), the new community garden on 15th near Petersen, the city's food bank and businesses serving those industries and activities. One of the more interesting of the food-related industries is HYGRO Gardening Supplies Inc., at 1791 Tamarac Street, which offers a large supply of indoor and outdoor gardening products including locally-made specialty nutrients for general, organic and hydroponic applications. It for example is a supplier to and supporter of the community garden. And of course there are people of many types too, from residents of high-end homes along the river and on the hill overlooking it all to small older homes needing renewal, some social housing, people living year-round in campsites and sadly some living hard in bushes. All that does not make for an idyllic community but it is getting better

and economically stronger and more populated - especially with B.C. Hydro's billion-dollar multi-year John Hart Generating Station Renewal Project now underway, which has seen the Aecon and SNC-Lavalin joint venture (ASL-JV) take over the former Campbellton school site and turn it into a major construction works yard. Did we forget to mention the new world-class Elk Falls Suspension Bridge too? Well no, and nor did we mention the work to renew public access to the shores of the Campbell River. There's just too much going on to mention all at once. Don't forget to datebook the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association's annual general meeting on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Eagles Hall (yet another notable feature in Campbellton, which is near the proposed new entrance feature.....

Birch, Mary Jane (Maj) October 6, 1949 – November 18, 2015

Roderic Wallace Fairweather, 64, passed away early Wednesday morning, November 11th, in Campbell River Hospital. Delbert George Wilson

December 29, 1926 November 5, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Delbert Wilson. Del is survived by his Sister in Law, Mae Wilson, Doreen Wilson, Shirley Wilson, and Marilyn Wilson, and numerous nephews and nieces. Born in Craik, Saskatchewan, Del Wilson has been a fixture with the Regina Pats hockey club, boasting a twenty-five year career with junior hockey in Regina and a lifetime of dedication as a builder in Western Canada. Del began his hockey career as a goaltender with the Regina Abbotts in 1945 and the Regina Pats from 1946 to 1947. He moved into the administrative side of the sport when he began coaching the Regina Pats Minor Hockey teams in 1948; coaching Bantam, Midget, Juvenile, and Junior B teams simultaneously until 1965, amassing an impressive thirty-five provincial and three international titles. Del would later assume the role of General Manager of the Regina Pats from 1956-1968, while scouting Western Canada for the National Hockey League (NHL) Montreal Canadiens, a position he would hold for forty-seven years. Wilson was a driving force in establishing both the Western Canada Junior Hockey League (WCJHL) in 1966 and the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League in 1973. In 1970, Wilson along with Jim Piggott and Ed Chynoweth, led the WHL into a partnership with Ontario and Quebec, and today there are over fifty Major Junior teams in the three leagues. Wilson led a group of investors to purchase the Pats in 1970, and once again served as general manager and president of the club, positions he held for another six seasons. He led an All-Star Team to a gold medal in Edmonton in 1967 against a Russian team in the Labatt Cup; and the Pats to a silver medal at the Ahearne Cup in Sweden in 1973. In 1974, Del enjoyed one of his greatest highlights when the team he had built and managed captured the Western Hockey League (WHL) Championship and won the Memorial Cup. Del left the Pats in 1980 and continued to make his mark in hockey at the national level, serving as chairman of the board of the WHL for six years, including one year as president as well as chairman of the board of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League. He was Referee-in-Chief of the WHL from 1980 to 1982, and retired after 46 years, as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens in 1995. For his contributions to the sport of hockey, Del Wilson received the WHL Board of Governors Award in 2005. The Del Wilson Trophy, awarded annually to the top goaltender of the Western Hockey League, was named in his honor. Del retired from the Canadians in 1995 having served 47 years with Montreal as a scout. During his employment the Canadians won 18 Stanley Cups. Del was Installed in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum on June 19th, 2010. Along with his hockey Del had a passion for golf. Del started playing golf in 1948. He played on the Willington Cup Team in 1953, 55, 56, and 57. He won the Saskatchewan Amateur Champion in 1957. Del was the President of the Saskatchewan Golf Association in 1957. He became a golf professional in 1959 at the Craig golf course in Regina and he later became the pro at the Murry golf course in 1962 where he remained until 1976. In 2014 Del received recognition for 50 years of service in the Canadian PGA. Del moved to Campbell River in 1989 and retired in 1995. Del spent his retirement traveling, fishing and golfing. Del played most of his Golf at Sequoia Springs where he won the club championship several years. Del thru the late 2000’s he would shoot his age or better. Del made three hole in ones over his life. Donations in his memory may be made to the WHL Scholarship Fund. A memorial service for Del will be held in July in Campbell River.

The Storm rolled into the weekend on a 5 game winning streak with an opportunity to widen their lead in the VIJHL North Division. It would mean making the best of three games in three days. On Sunday, they closed out the successful weekend at Rod Brind’Amour Arena with a 6-2 victory over the Saanich Braves before a boisterous crowd. First up was the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Friday at the Brindy. It was one of the most complete games of the season for the Red and Black. They dominated from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer. Going with just 10 forwards Head Coach, Lee Stone, was pleased with the result, “Beyond the goals, the 9-1 (score), we played a really smart game.” He added, “We moved the puck exceptionally well and when we’re moving the puck with speed, teams can’t handle us.” Colin Blake, Braeden Cyra and Alex Rosolowsky were the three stars and were instrumental in 6 of the 9 goals. Oceanside was next up on Saturday and despite a dismal overall record, the team had picked up points in their previous three games. A crazy third period, with 9 shots getting past the two netminders, led

to a 9-5 final. Although the outcome wasn’t in doubt, Stone wasn’t thrilled with the defensive play of his team that night, “You’re not going to score 9 goals every night; we need to play better defence. When you score that many goals, you can get away with some bad habits.” Offensively Gage Colpron had a stellar 5 point game, picking up three goals including a short-handed marker in the second period. On Sunday, the grinding line of Aaron Brewer, Christian Brandt and Joe Gage

found the net figuring in three of Campbell River’s six goals in the 6-2 win. Brewer, despite getting no credit on the first goal of the afternoon, dug the puck out of a crowded corner then centred it to Brandt who found Austin Steger at the side of the net. Stone exalted the play of the younger Brewer, “Aaron’s a guy that most nights doesn’t show up on the scoresheet but is such a hardworking kid. He’s a lot of what we need in our lineup in terms of tenacity and energy.”

One of the big storylines going into last weekend was the trade of the popular Brett Witala to the KIJHL Creston Valley Thundercats in exchange for Steger, an offensively minded D-man with a flair for the pass. Mike Wilson, Storm Associate Coach, scouted the newcomer and said, “Steegs is a player with dynamic skill, a guy that commands the play, he wants the puck on his stick and when he gets it he makes a good play.” Stone admitted that a recent comment made

by Steger caught his attention. In an interview, Steger described his style of play, “I’ll shoot for a stick before I shoot for the net.” Early indications are positive as he’s already picked up 5 points in his first weekend with the Storm (1 goal and 4 assists). Campbell River, with an 11 point cushion in the standings, has just one game this week and it’s on the road, Friday, in Saanich. They return to the friendly confines of the Brindy on Friday, Dec. 4 for the annual Teddy Bear Toss Game.

At least one member of last year’s championshipwinning Campbell River Storm who moved on from the squad has continued on in hockey and is getting along well with his new team. Forward Josiah Fri-

esen, having played out his eligible years in the VIJHL, left Campbell River for Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, Sask. “I was contacted by (head coach) Jaime (Ramer) in the summer about coming here to play hockey,” he said in an article by Briercrest

Athletics. “I kept praying about it and kept kicking it around in the mack of my mind as a really cool opportunity.” Part of what made that opportunity so cool for Friesen was the chance to both study and continue playing hockey somewhere his faith would be given a chance to grow. “What sets Briercrest’s hockey team apart is our mission,” he says. “We care about the spiritual well-being of ourselves and our opponents and actively pursue conversations that encourage spiritual growth,” which is an important part of his life. Friesen is currently enrolled in Briercrest’s

Certificate of Biblical Studies program, but is also taking courses in kinesiology, working towards his goal of a career in physiotherapy, an extension of his love of athletics. His tenacious forecheck and speed is a welcome addition to a Briercrest team that plays in the competitive Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference alongside teams from much larger hockey centres like Red Deer College, Keyano College in Fort McMurray, as well as both MacEwan University and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. –with files by Jeremy Demoskoff

he end of November each year is a time for reflection for those in the victims services field. Nov. 25 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and starts the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, ending on Dec. 10, which is, fittingly, International Human Rights Day. It’s a time, according to Gloria Jackson, Coordinator of Community Based Victims Services with the Campbell River Family Services Society, to both reflect and raise awareness so we can move forward on this issue as a society. “It’s about just keeping in the community mind the idea that if you’re hurting, if you know

someone who is hurting, if you see someone being hurt, there are some actions you can take to assist and support them.” On the first day of the Days of Activism, Nov. 25, Jackson and a few others will be at North Island College with a table of information for people to access. “It’s just to keep reminding people in the community that there are resources out there.” A few days later, on Nov. 28, Jenny McLeod, a FASD Keyworker at Dogwood Place Child and Youth Development Centre and various other community partners in the region are hosting an event in Courtenay at the Sid Williams Theatre, featuring former NHL hockey star turned author and advocate Theo Fleury. “I work with families who have children with disabilities, specifically brain differences like Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and a big piece of my role is to help parents understand brain

differences,” McLeod says, “and a big piece of this event is talking about the neurodevelopment of people…and about how important it is for people to understand what’s going on in their brain to help them heal.” Healing is what Jackson tries to facilitate, as well.

“That particular workshop is about trauma and healing, and one of the things that we know is that in situations of domestic violence, sexual assault, child assault,

that trauma occurs when those things are going on,” Jackson says. “We know that individuals who are hurting are at greater risk of hurting themselves and

other people. We want them to find healing. We want them to reach out and find resources in the community to deal with their trauma, their hurting. “Then we can hopefully stop the cycle of violence and hurting.” So are we getting better? As a society, are we making headway on this issue? “I’d like to say that we are,” Jackson says. “I think that there is perhaps less stigma and less judgment about a lot of these things. Because it’s been in the media so much, and people like Theo Fleury and others stepping up and talking about it, I’d like to think we’ve come a long way in that regard. Years ago, you’d never talk about sexual abuse or child abuse. I mean, people just didn’t talk about it.” Fleury, McLeod says, has helped continue to

break down that barrier for a lot of people. “He’s this public figure who is speaking out about something that is really hard for people to speak out about. We realize (through people like Fleury coming forward) that it happens to all people. It’s not limited to a certain group of

long way to go,” Jackson says, but she’s happy about the progress being made. Both Jackson and McLeod acknowledge that there are some gaps in the community resources. Funding is, as it always seems to be, the big-

people. It’s everywhere.” Which means more people are willing to ask for help. Which is good. Now we just need to have more services for them to be able to access. “I think we have a

gest hurdle in providing services. “I think there’s a lack of free or affordable couples or family counselling,” Jackson says, “and that’s a real gap in service. I think that many of the services that exist have had funding cuts, and so

they really don’t have adequate funds to continue to provide good service to a growing number of people.” There is also a gap, Jackson says, in terms of the availability of “preventative services,” like anger management groups for men. And yet, the organizations that do exist, Jackson says, do wonders with the small amounts of money they receive. “There aren’t enough mental health services,” Jackson says, “but they are really working hard.” McLeod says it would be nice if there were more “drop-in” style services rather than “appointment-based” ones. “It creates barriers to have to make an appointment.” Jackson agrees. “There are windows of opportunity when people are willing to reach out for help,” Jackson says, “and that can pass quickly if they can’t access those supports.” McLeod points out that the toll-free crisis

line (1-888-494-3888) is a great starting point for people who need help, as the people on the other end have all the numbers and addresses of the different community services available and can help people determine who might best serve their needs. There is also a new online tool put together by the Campbell River and District Division of Family Practice, called Fetch (fetchbc.ca), which is a searchable database of community services. But it doesn’t matter where you go to look for help, Jackson says, as long as you keep looking. “Even if you’ve tried to access help in the past and you haven’t been successful, don’t give up. There are people and services out there. Keep asking and trying different places. Hopefully, eventually, you’ll hit on something that’s going to work for you and your family, at the right time with the right people.”

With the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence again being recognized from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, Gloria Jackson, community based victim services coordinator for Campbell River Family Services Society shares some tips for understanding and taking action against gender violence in our community. Gender-based violence pervades every ethnic, social and economic class. n It is not the social standing, the amount of stress or the company kept which makes an abuser, but the internal need for power, the belief that they have the right to control someone else. n Know the signs. Signs and indicators of violence can vary and do not always come with physical symptoms because domestic violence is not limited to physical attacks such as beatings. It includes many forms of abusive behaviour to control the victim in a myriad of ways including emotional abuse, verbal abuse and economic abuse. n Immigrants that have been traumatized by war are less likely to report violence to the police for fear of further victimization or even deportation. n Alcohol does not cause an abuser to abuse, however it may increase the abuse. n Abuse tends to increase both in velocity and extent over a period of time. n There are many emotional, social, spiritual and financial hurdles to overcome before someone being abused can leave. n When a woman leaves an abusive relationship, she needs a lot of support. Leaving is the ultimate threat to the abusers power and control and he will often do anything rather than let her go. Be there for the victim. n Men can help prevent gender-based violence by talking to and listening to women about ways to best support women that are living with violence. n Rather than watch abuse happen, men can take a more proactive role by standing up, speaking out, intervening in potentially harmful situations, or alerting others for assistance.

Once a year, the province of B.C. heralds and thanks the police officers whose work enhance the safety of our communities at their annual Police Honours Night. This year’s event was the 35th such celebration, at which Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton presented 66 awards to officers from all over the province, one of which was Campbell River’s own, Const. Kyle Ushok. Ushok received an Award of Meritorious Service for “placing himself at personal risk to rescue a distressed kayaker who had capsized in Discovery Passage.” Ushok, who was also Campbell River’s rider in the 2014 Tour de Rock,

leapt into the water and swam out into the passage on the night of July 17 after a distress call was received by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria. He then assisted a witness who had seen what was happening and quickly gone home to retrieve an inflatable boat to row out and help the 40-year-old Campbell River man. The man was treated in hospital for hypothermia, and police say he had been drinking alcohol before he’d flipped his vessel. He had spent approximately 45 minutes in the water before being rescued. Subsequent investigation revealed the male was alone on the water in an open style hard plastic recreational kayak that was unsuitable for

Comfort Inn and Suites wins national award Rookie of the Year has made an impact since opening last April Campbell River’s newest hotel, the Comfort Inn and Suites, was honoured recently with a national APEX (Award for Property Excellence) award for Rookie of the Year. Having only been open since April, 2015, the team is excited and proud to be recognized so early in its existence. The entire staff at the Comfort Inn and Suites, Campbell River has worked thoroughly since day one to ensure the

new hotel in the heart of Campbell River offers nothing but the highest standards to their guests. Guests have been coming in from around the world to take in all that Campbell River and the West Coast has to offer – and it has been a pleasure for the staff to welcome them to the property. “Being recognized with an APEX award is a tremendous honour, especially as we were ranked against so many outstanding properties,”

says Jonathan Shead, general manager, Comfort Inn and Suites, Campbell River. “We have worked diligently since our opening day to ensure our guests feel welcome, wanted and respected at our hotel. To be acknowledged for that hard work is a great feeling.” Shead said Campbell River’s Comfort Inn was up against more than 20 other hotels for the award, including chains in Calgary and Halifax. APEX award winners are announced each October during Choice Hotels Canada’s Annual Fall Conference and

recognize top performing hotels across the country in areas ranging from property quality to exemplary guest service. Choice Hotels Canada operates 320 hotels within the country. “The team at Comfort Inn and Suites, Campbell River has made a commitment to providing best–in-class service and it hasn’t gone unnoticed,” says Brian Leon, managing director, Choice Hotels Canada. “ They’ve made extraordinary strides as a property and we can’t be more proud to have them as part of the Choice family.”

The team at the Comfort Inn celebrates its win for Rookie of the Year – a national award.

KidStart gets a kickstart from Healthyway on Giving Tuesday

J

ohn Howard KidStart needs your help on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1. There are currently 90 local children on the waitlist for a mentor, and your donation can help them match more kids in need with a caring adult friend. In contrast to the mass consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday enables people to give back and make a differ-

ence. The John Howard Society of North Island is inviting you to help kids in your community by giving to the KidStart Mentoring Program. John Howard KidStart is a volunteer-based mentoring program that connects positive adult role models with children ages 6-18 for three hours of recreational fun per week. The program depends entirely on donations,

fundraising, and gaming funds to help children and youth in the community. Healthyway Natural Foods will once again be participating in Giving Tuesday by matching customer donations on Dec. 1, up to $500. That is a potential $1,000 donation to support local children and youth. If you give $5, it becomes $10 for KidStart, $10 becomes $20, $20 becomes $40, and

so on. Consider visiting Healthyway on Dec. 1 to make your donation. No amount is too small. Donations can also be made online at www. jhsni.bc.ca or in person or by mail to John Howard, #201-140A 10th Ave, Campbell River, BC, V9W 4E3. Donations over $10 are eligible for a tax receipt. Feel great by helping local kids this holiday season.

Healthway Natural Foods staff and John Howard Society officials are excited about Giving Tuesday when all customer donations will be matched by the health food store on Dec. 1.

Betterthan50 publisher and award presenter Brian Kieran congratulates author D. Ross Fisher along with Cedric awards executive director Veronica Osborn.

River senior’s small town vignettes gain Cedric Literary Awards recognition

C

ampbell River’s D. Ross Fisher, 59, has received an honourable mention in the fiction category of the inaugural Cedric Literary Awards for unpublished BC writers aged 50 or better. His entry, “Raincoast Sketches (Of a Small Town)” was described by the judges as “a well-written series of vignettes about characters all living in the same small coastal town – all unique and living believable lives. The book builds a convincing world and it was enjoyable to get a glimpse into each life.” Three other Vancouver Island writers were each presented with $3,000 awards in front of a packed audience at a special reception held in Victoria this past Saturday. They are: Margitta Maud, 76, of Duncan for her creative

non-fiction work “Out of Darkness;” Joel Scott, 75, of Chemainus for his work of fiction “Arrows Flight;” and Susan Braley, 59, of Victoria for her poetry collection “The Imminence of Fracture.” The fourth winner was: Irene Lynxleg, 75, a First Nations writer from Vancouver for her short story “Keesis’s Trimble Park Diary.” Fisher, three other honourable mentions, and the four winners were chosen by a panel of judges from writers of 168 manuscripts submitted in the 2015 writing competition. “With no history to draw upon, we’ve created a spectacular beginning to The Cedric Literary Awards,” said Peter Dale, Chairman of Betterthan50 and founder of the writing competition. “We have demonstrated what

inclusiveness really means by embracing writers from every region of BC, including First Nations writers.” Submissions to the 2015 Cedric Literary Awards competition were received from writers from Pink Mountain to Langley, and from Fort St. James to Victoria. Plans for the 2016 competition are already underway, and it is hoped the competition will embrace Frenchspeaking writers in coming years. “This year’s competition has been inspirational for all of us, and I am extremely grateful to all of the participants for taking a leap of faith by sending us their work,” said Executive Director Veronica Osborn. “The next Call for Submissions will be February 1st, 2016, and I look forward to seeing even more entries next year.”
