TOPHAM TRIAL
Topham awaiting sentencing – bail conditions remain the same AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter
During last week’s bail hearing Crown sought to prevent Arthur Topham from operating his website. Justice Bruce Butler denied Crown’s request. Topham was found guilty by a 12-member jury of one count of wilful promotion of hatred and not guilty of a second count of promoting hatred. The charges stemmed from material found on Topham’s site, www.radicalpress.com the same site in which Crown sought last Friday to have restricted. Crown pointed to Topham’s posts during the trial and a photograph of potential jurors lined up outside the courthouse, stating it posed a safety threat to jurors. Butler agreed to request the removal of the photograph to which Topham immediately agreed. “Yes, if it is a concern I will do so this afternoon,” Topham said. Defence argued there was no publication ban and a number of media outlets were covering the trial. “Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are a concern here,” he said. “There’s no reason to change [bail conditions] at this time.” Justice agreed, noting they were not yet at the sentencing portion. “Given that and the freedom of speech issue, we’re getting ahead of ourselves,” he said. “My wife and I and bodyguard Frank Frost left the courthouse feeling rather elated about the decision and knowing that RadicalPress. com had been victorious once again in retaining its right to carry on publishing until the Charter challenge to Sec. 319(2) was heard,” Topham wrote on his website. Topham was arrested and his house searched on May 16, 2012 after it was determined “there were reasonable grounds the offence of promotion of hatred was committed.”

in their dedication and service to others and who devote time and energy to making their communities more caring, dynamic, beautiful, healthy and unique. They inspire by their example. Due to the fact they couldn’t nominate the whole event Communities for Veterans Ride Across Canada, as it could only be a person or couple, Mayor Bob Simpson sent an email to Terry
about being nominated for the award and she said they would be honoured if council wanted to put their names forward. Simpson says there still needs to be work on how they would recognize their accomplishment. “We also need to do some thinking around how we fully recognize what the Nichols have done, so we’ve got a bit of work to do around that,” Simpson said.

Barkerville Brewing Co. is interested in selling its craft beer at the local B.C. Liquor Store as part of B.C. Liquor Stores’ new policy to accept applications for non-listed products from each store’s six closest community craft breweries. B.C. Liquor Stores announced a plan to put local small-scale brewery products ( breweries producing 15,000 hectolitres or less annually) – brews not listed for sale with the major liquor retailer – on their shelves, in an effort to help meet the demand of customers interested in supporting their local manufacturers. To help promote the initiative, Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes toured Barkerville Brewing Co. – Quesnel’s first small-scale craft brewery – to celebrate the success of a northern B.C. start-up that’s staking its claim in the craft brewing industry. “Buying local products and celebrating our local small businesses is such an important piece of the economic puzzle in this day and age,” Oakes, who is also Minister of
Small Business and Red Tape Reduction and Responsible for the Liquor Distribution Branch, said. “The craft beer industry is thriving – growing at an unprecedented rate – and I want to help ensure its growth continues. I will work to help this industry be successful, and, I am confident craft brewers across B.C. will continue to grow, create new jobs and enjoy continued success in the industry.” “We are happy anytime attention is brought to the craft brewing industry. Microbreweries represent their communities by engaging and educating people about the process and quality of craft beer,” Barkerville Brewing Co. general
manager Justine Wittingham said. “This has truly become a sub culture that shows no signs of slowing down and we are happy to see the BCLDB recognize that.” The original Barkerville Brewery, built in the 1860s, was located in the town of Barkerville, more than 80 kilometres away from its current location. Unfortunately, the brewery burned down, along with the rest of the town, in the great fire of 1868. From their award winning 18 Karat Amber Ale to their Wandering Camel IPA – made with ingredients sourced mostly from B.C. – Barkerville Brewing has taken the stories of lore and transformed them into the tastes of today. Offering their products by the bottle, can, growler or key, Barkerville Brewing is supporting a niche market in northern B.C., supplying unique, craft beer products. There are currently 102 microbreweries in B.C. eligible for this new program. In 2011, there were 57 – the number has almost doubled in the past five years.

Boundaries adjusted in Cariboo Following a public review and comment period and discussions with local First Nations and stakeholders earlier this year, the boundaries of about 400 existing old growth management areas (OGMAs) in the Quesnel Natural Resource District have been adjusted. Old growth management areas help protect the biological diversity of old-growth forests by ensuring that stands of different ecosystem types are protected. These areas are excluded from commercial timber harvesting, which helps preserve plant ecosystems, wildlife habitat and cultural values. The amendments to the old growth management areas in the Quesnel Natural Resource District came into effect Oct. 26. They were required under the Land Act, due in part to the salvage harvesting of trees killed by mountain pine beetle infestations within those areas. Legally, the portions that were harvested had to be replaced with an equivalent amount of old growth management areas. The amount and distribution of old growth management areas are determined by ecosystem mapping, but the boundaries of the relevant ecosystem units had been updated since the old growth management
areas were originally mapped in 2006. This affected their distribution and percent target requirements, so the boundary adjustments also corrected those discrepancies. Quick Facts: • Currently, there are more than 49,000 old growth management areas in B.C., covering almost
3.1 million hectares. • A total of about 4.5 million hectares of old-growth forest are protected within old growth management areas, provincial parks, national parks, ecological reserves, land conservancies and recreational areas in British Columbia. • The Quesnel
Natural Resource District covers about 1.8 million hectares of land in the southern Interior. It extends from Macalister in the south to the Cottonwood River in the north and from the Itcha Ilgachuz Mountains in the west to the Fraser River Divide in the east.
COTTER, SHIRLEY JOY OCT. 26, 1923 – NOV. 10, 2015 Life was way too short for Mom! Shirley passed away peacefully in Quesnel at age 92, leaving behind family and friends who will be eternally grateful for the mark she made. Predeceased by her husband, Chester Cotter, 1996, and sister Garda Johnstone, 2014, she will be missed by her children Rick Cotter, Joel (Kate), Jan (Michael) Kidston, Doug (Ashley), 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. We’ll see you later Gramma! Shirley moved from Calgary to Vancouver after her father Chester Elliott passed away at a young age. Vancouver was the place of long lasting friendships, interests in vintage cars, music and animals. As part of the War effort she packed parachutes, and riveted Warbirds at YVR. Chester and Shirley were married in 1951, and moved to paradise in Bachelor Bay
near Whytecliff Park. She loved the romance of the Cariboo, so moving to Quesnel in 1966 with Chester’s work suited her perfectly. Shirley was involved in and believed in the Quesnel Community. She loved the people, the four seasoned country, travel, pottery and painting, singing with Sweet Adelines, and shopping for Seniors, and of course this great place for kids to grow up. Frequent visits to the Green Lake cabin were a necessity of life. Home was for family, entertaining and culinary delights, but home was for Shirley’s animal friends
as well. She truly loved animals and this was passed on. Thanks Mom! Donkeys, dogs, mules and horses, peacocks, bees, cats and more; you name it, they were all welcome. Shirley loved adventure, going down the unknown road. She could have been anything, but she was something else! A memorial service for Shirley will take place on Tuesday, December 8th at 1 pm. At Clayton’s Funeral Chapel in Quesnel. A reception tea will follow at the Anglican Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Shirley’s memory by way of donation may do so to the Quesnel Community Foundation: quesnelfoundation.ca, or to the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society: turtlevalleydonkeyrefuge. com
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Cyril Legeard “Ittza Joe.” Joe was born in Hafford, Sask. on February 14, 1937 and after a courageous battle against cancer he passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC on November 18th 2015 surrounded by his family. Joe was well known and a friend to all in Quesnel. From 1970 to 1993 he owned and operated the iconic restaurant Ittza Joe’s, where many fond memories can be attributed to his kind and generous nature. Joe was very much involved with the Quesnel
Curling Centre, as an avid curler, executive member, and coach. Joe leaves in mourning his loving companion and soulmate of 35 years Pat Helzel, his son Kerry (Denise) Legeard and daughter Kim Legeard (Lorne), grandchildren Jordan and Ben Legeard. Pat’s children Kerri Helzel and Jason Helzel, grandson Darius Helzel , Brenda MacDonald (Blair) grandchildren Brayden and Brooke. Gary Parish (Kerry), grandchildren Connor and Aimee. His sisters Dorothy Frances (Don) and Evelyn Skyte and sister-in-laws Teri Stocks, Bonita Quinn and Cindy Reid (Harold).
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring in Quesnel. Pat and family would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support during this most difficult time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Quesnel Curling Club or the Central Okanagan Hospice House (Kelowna).
Chesley, Donald Thomas January 7, 1937 – November 17, 2015
Don passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the Moog & Friends Hospice House in Penticton, BC with his loving wife and children by his side. He received tremendous care and the family would like to especially thank Dr. Lorraine Kane. Don is survived by his wife Claire; his children and step-children Sharon (Dave) Zorman, Tom (Charlene) Chesley, Martin (Terry) Tooms, Nick (Robin) Tooms, Roger (Cheryl) Tooms, and Chris Tooms; Don’s grandchildren Darrell (Reina), Mallory, Amanda, Breanna, Amy, Brandon, Ashley, Andrew, Matthew, Devan, Bryce, Amber (Jeff), David and Kristen; his great-grandchildren Jacob, Brannon and Emily; his brothers Ken (Bonny), Bruce (Pat); his sisters-in-law, Irene and Pat and many nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his parents, Art and Eunice; his brothers Herb and Walter; his sister-in-law Edna and his step-son Rob. Don was born January 7, 1937 at his Mom and Dad’s homestead in Saskatchewan and spent his younger years in Prince Albert, Shipman and Montreal Lake and later Christopher Lake. Don’s sawmill life started early at his Dad’s mill and continued in 1956 with Brownmiller Sawmill in BC followed by West Fraser Mills taking him from Quesnel to Chetwynd in 1978 and Terrace in 1987. In 1961 Don went to New Zealand on a working holiday where he met and married Joan in 1963. Don and Joan moved back to Quesnel and the family grew with the addition of Sharon and Tom.
Life was happy and busy with family activities and work. 1983 started a new phase of life for Don – he was now a Grandpa, a role he cherished. Don and Joan separated in 1991 and in 1992 he met Claire, who he married in 1994. This more than doubled the size of his family. 1995 brought retirement for Don and Claire with moves to Kamloops and later Osoyoos where they golfed and wintered in Arizona. Don’s commitment to his family was evident in the many trips he made for family celebrations with his parents, brothers, children, grandchildren. 2015 brought Don to Penticton where he and Claire downsized and were looking forward to the next stage of their lives. This ended far too soon for Don. He will be missed so very much and will always be in our hearts. A Memorial Service will be held for Don at the Quesnel Seniors Centre, Saturday, November 28th at 12:30 PM followed by interment at the Quesnel Cemetery and a tea at the Seniors Centre. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will be gratefully accepted.

ICBC, RCMP appeal to northern drivers
In the North Central region, speed-related crashes that result in injury or fatality increase by over 110 per cent between November and January – totalling 45 crashes each of these months. Driving too fast for the road conditions is a factor in most speed related crashes. That’s why ICBC and police are appealing to northern B.C. drivers to adjust their driving for the road conditions they encounter. In poor weather, slow down, increase your following distance and allow extra travel time. Throughout November, police across B.C. will be looking for drivers travelling at unsafe speeds. Top five tips for northern B.C. drivers: • Ice and snow can hit unexpectedly so make sure your tires are rated for the conditions you’ll be driving in this winter. Check your tire pressure regularly – pressure drops in cold weather and overinflated tires can reduce gripping. • When severe winter conditions arrive, consider alternatives – take public transit if possible, carpool with a confident driver whose vehicle is equipped for the conditions, take a

taxi, work from home or wait until the road crews have cleared major roads. Sometimes the best option is to leave the car at home. • Consider using your headlights whenever weather is poor and visibility is reduced – not only at night – to help you see ahead and be seen by other drivers. • Clear off any snow that’s built up on your vehicle’s headlights and wheel wells before driving; it can affect your ability to see and steer. • In poor weather, use extreme caution when approaching highway maintenance vehicles on the road and never pass on the right. Be patient and maintain a safe following distance – these vehicles throw up snow and spray which can make it difficult to see. “We are now into the fall, and that means the days get darker earlier, and motorists can often experience bad weather
conditions,” Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, said. “Therefore, it’s really important that motorists remember to adjust their driving speed accordingly, and slow down when they encounter bad weather, such as rain, snow, or fog. It’s also important to leave lots of following distance between vehicles, and to stay alert at the wheel.” “Keeping our roads safe is a shared effort between government, enforcement, and most importantly, drivers,” Suzanne Anton, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, said. “Especially during these months of challenging and rapidly changing driving conditions, it is paramount that drivers remember that speed limits are set for ideal driving conditions. In times of bad visibility or hazardous driving conditions, drivers need to lower their speeds, remain focused on the roads, and avoid distractions while driving.” “Speeding is the leading cause of fatal car crashes in our province,” Chief Constable Neil Dubord, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety
Committee, added. “Drivers need to adjust their driving and ensure their vehicles are prepared for fall and winter conditions. Posted speed limits are set for ideal driving conditions only. Police are out across B.C. looking for drivers travelling at unsafe speeds.” “With worsening weather across our province, it’s important to adjust your driving for the road conditions you encounter,” Lindsay Matthews, ICBC’s director responsible for road safety, said. “In poor weather, slow down, increase your following distance and allow extra travel time. Our Community It’s easy to focus on the uncertainty facing our community as we await a reduction in the annual allowable cut next year and the sector we have traditionally depended upon faces challenges on multiple fronts: reduction in commercial log supply, fiber and energy cost increases, transportation issues, another round of softwood lumber negotiations, and a changing marketplace, to name a few. However, there are also positive signs all around us that point to Quesnel being a vibrant and resilient community that will thrive through this transition period. Every week I meet people who have recently moved to town, for a variety of reasons. Some have retired here because of our central geographic location, affordable housing, and great amenities. Some are young professionals who are attracted to our community for lifestyle and quality of life reasons. Our success at attracting doctors and other medical professionals has been noted by other communities who are struggling with the same concern. We’ve seen considerable investment in our retail and small and medium sized business sector. Take a drive on two mile flat and notice how many businesses there have invested in their buildings. Notice the infilling and new investment in South Quesnel. The downtown core has also enjoyed an influx of new businesses to fill the vacant retail spaces there. And, the West Quesnel Business Association has done an amazing job utilizing Baker Creek Park to attract shoppers over to their retail stores. Quesnel was fortunate to be one of the communities Telus invested in and their fiber optic infrastructure will enable us to attract residents and businesses that require this high-speed connectivity. Starting next year, BC Hydro will also be investing in our community, with significant upgrades to their infrastructure in town. In conjunction with these private sector investments, our new arena project will commence as soon as the frost is out of the ground. The City will also be investing over $8 million in West Quesnel: $7.2 million in Phase 2 of the West Quesnel Land Stability Project (storm drains, sub-surface dewatering, roads & sidewalks) and an additional $1.2 million in road and sidewalk re-building and repairs. City Council has also submitted sixteen projects to the Northern Development Trust for funding that, if approved, would see almost $1 million invested in a variety of projects throughout our community. In addition, we are working with the MLAs office to continue to secure investments to improve safety and traffic flow along Highway 97 through town, see improvements to our schools (the recent $500,000 investment in Correlieu was most welcome), and to realize a significant investment in G.R. Baker hospital. Finally, City staff and Council’s Finance Committee are busy reviewing the City’s capital investment needs in advance of more infrastructure funding from the new Federal Government and a promised Rural Dividend Fund ($25 million/year for 3 years) from the Province. Individuals and businesses do not make investment decisions lightly -- the signs of confidence in our community’s future are all around us. Mayor Bob Simpson

Action required Islamophobia is disappointing, but we cannot allow it to keep refugees from making a new home in Canada. A world that was already leery about immigration became more defensive about borders after this month’s terror attacks in Paris. It’s led, too often, to outright racism, for example in unpublishable letters to the editor sent to newspapers like the News Bulletin. Fear of terror is understandable, but rejection of refugees is an unreasonable reaction and a non-sequitur. Canada’s new federal government is expected to announce a strategy on the refugee file Tuesday (Nov. 24) as it works toward its campaign promise of bringing 25,000 Syrians here. Many are saying that figure is an unrealistic ideal and are suggesting that the government revise its timeline to allow for further discussion surrounding planning, screening, logistics and social programs. Of course, those are all crucial discussions that will impact both the short-term and long-range outcomes of mass immigration. That said, the Syrian refugee situation is being called a ‘crisis’ for a reason, and crises don’t always allow for the same measured response Canadians might otherwise expect. We know that refugees will require a great deal of our scarce – relatively scarce, that is – social assistance resources. But we hate the sentiment that refugees will be taking from Canadians. Because isn’t the notion that people can come here and be Canadians the very best reason to help in this crisis? We don’t know if 25,000 is the right number or a realistic number. It’s a number that’s going to bring about some difficulties and challenges, and most importantly, some success stories. Let’s try to help 25,000 refugees until we can’t, or until we miss our deadline, and then let’s keep trying after that. –BP
Lights out for opponents of Site C T
he fall session of the B.C. legislature petered out two days early last week, as the ruling B.C. Liberals and the opposition NDP agreed to turn out the energy-efficient lights and head for home. NDP leader John Horgan skipped the last day and headed to the B.C. Institute of Technology campus in Burnaby. There he announced “PowerBC,” billed as the NDP’s “bold, progressive plan for the future of B.C. energy, with a strong focus on jobs.” Reporters asked, how many jobs? Horgan said retrofitting public buildings and homes for energy efficiency would create jobs all around the province, but he can’t say how many. How much does the plan cost, and does it include subsidizing homeowners to fix their windows and insulation? “The costing will be more apparent when we get closer to the election,” Horgan replied. Whatever the cost, the NDP plan apparently rests on the assumption that the $9 billion Site C dam project on the Peace River can be stopped by an NDP

The chances of Site C being stopped are approaching zero. Construction of an access road started two months ago, site clearing and work camp construction a month before that. Energy Minister Bill Bennett says the main dam construction contract will be let shortly, followed by the powerhouse contract next year. Horgan said remaining legal challenges could slow or stop the project. The West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations have lost their case against Site C twice, in the B.C. to their low-information donor base. According to the Sierra Club and others, Site C is not renewable energy because the (largely idle) farmland it floods is a “carbon sink.” Forests do store carbon, albeit temporarily, but farmland where the trees have been cleared? This is gluten-free gobbledegook. They also trot out the claim that Site C will be used to power liquefied natural gas operations. Most proponents so far have said they will use gas for LNG processing, and if they don’t have hydro available for ancillary power, they will have to burn more gas. BC Hydro has just finished its latest grid upgrade, a second high-voltage transmission line from Merritt to Coquitlam. It adds disaster reliability to the system that brings power from the Peace and Columbia dams to the Lower Mainland. If you’re arguing that hydroelectricity isn’t renewable power, you’ve already lost. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. River and McLeod Lake Indian Bands dropped their challenges, and McLeod Lake’s construction company has started work on a Site C contract. West Moberly Chief Roland Willson staged a dramatic protest at the legislature last spring, bringing a cooler of frozen bull trout from a river below the two existing Peace dams, telling media they were too contaminated with mercury to eat. Flooding land for hydro dams does elevate methylmercury levels in water, but BC Hydro provided me with the latest study that included fish samples collected by West Moberly members. It shows average methylmercury levels remain below federal guidelines for limiting consumption of commercially sold fish. It’s an odd coincidence that Willson suddenly made this claim, 47 years after the first Peace dam was completed, when he happened to be in court trying to stop Site C. A coalition of U.S. and Canadian environment groups is also demanding that Site C be stopped, using typical arguments to appeal

feedback Permit concerns
• Publisher Tracey Roberts • Editor Autumn MacDonald
Editor: Open letter to Minister of Environment Mary Polak. Further to our conference call of Nov. 6, with Ministry staff, the Cariboo Regional District would like to go on record with its concerns regarding the permit conditions proposed by government. Specifically, requiring an alternative discharge mechanism, which is believed would most likely be accomplished by constructing a pipeline for the short-term discharge plan, which is not the best way to ensure a timely remediation of Hazeltine Creek. It is a distraction from the process of both finding and funding a long term solution. The requirement for construction of works (presumed to be a pipeline) by Nov. 30, 2016 is likely to again raise concerns of all affected parties that this may become a permanent solution. The mine has committed to an extensive review of all options for long-term water management, including those that the community has put forward. If they must go to the expense of installing a pipeline, its very existence will create, or at least be perceived as creating, a bias towards its long-term use. The proposed discharge using Hazeltine Creek for a two-year period has been extensively discussed with the communities of Likely, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Williams Lake Indian Band and Xatsull First Nation. While no one thinks it is a perfect option, they generally accept that it is a necessary short term solution. There has been no consultation with the communities around the need for a second short-term option. Community members will feel blindsided by this lack of consultation given that they have been assured repeatedly that they will be consulted. We understand the desire for fish habitat to be restored as quickly as possible in Hazeltine Creek and we share it. We are not biologists, but we don’t understand the difference over the long-term of restoring the habitat in one year, or two, or even three, given that the company has temporarily established alternate habitat. Additionally, the building of the pipeline may cause further
Letters to the Editor
environmental damage. We agree that the duration of the proposed short-term discharge strategy of using Hazeltine Creek should be minimized to enable the construction of habitat in Hazeltine Creek, but not at the expense of implementing a solution without the appropriate discussion, consultation and supporting science. The mine has committed to collaboration with the affected communities in determining the best long-term solution, but if conditions keep changing, the community members will not trust that the collaboration is real. They will feel that the solution has already been determined and the company is only paying lip-service to the requirement for consultation. They may even refuse to take part. Generally speaking, the community of Likely is against discharge on a permanent basis to Quesnel Lake, although the community is certainly divided. A pipeline to the lake will only serve to strengthen their resolve and exacerbate that division in the community. We realize that a pipeline is not specified and the company is free to get creative with other options, but we don’t think other options will be forthcoming given the tight timelines specified. In any event, this would not negate the points around consultation and collaboration with the community. There has been no consultation around options for short-term discharge other than the use of Hazeltine Creek. We ask that the use of Hazeltine Creek be allowed for the twoyear period as specified in all of the consultation meetings and the collaborative review of all the long-term options be allowed to play out. Government could impose other conditions that Mount Polley Mining Corporation must comply with over the short term such as established timelines for various steps of the process and then holding the corporation to those timelines. The focus must remain on a long term solution that is based on the latest and best environmental practices for discharge treatment. Yours truly, AI Richmond Chair

Q-City Singers are planning a spring concert to show off their skills. Karen Powell photo
Q-City Singers community choir invites the public to join ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter
Q
uesnel is a town that loves to sing. Over the years, various singing groups have come and gone. Currently we have several musical ensembles providing choral entertainment and a new one has just formed. Q-City Singers, a community choir, has 63 signed up members who rehearse every Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church. “We are still open for more signups,” choir conductor Ingrid Marshall said. Marshall is new to
Quesnel, having followed her heart here three years ago. Singing since the age of three, Marshall had the support of her musical family. In elementary school she took up the saxophone as well as joining the Bel Canto community children’s choir and the school’s children’s choir. Music continued to play a large part in Marshall’s life including joining the Cantata Singers in Prince George and playing her saxophone and singing with various local and out-of-town bands until she moved to Quesnel. “I didn’t find any
immediate singing outlet, Sweet Harmony had disbanded and I wasn’t an a cappella singer anyway,” she said. Life and cancer got in her way and it was some time before she returned to her search for somewhere to sing. “I was at the Farmers’ Market and saw a signup for a community choir and instantly put my name on the list,” she said. “When they said they needed a conductor, even though I didn’t have experience, I took on the challenge.” Last August Ingrid spent a week in a conducting workshop and was happy
to report she learned so much and is now leading the community choir. “I learned valuable skills in order to obtain a successful blend of many diverse musical backgrounds in our choir,” she said. “I’m working with all the various singing levels.” Q-City Singers is now a non-profit society with a board of directors and they’re working on creating a logo and a website. The group practices every Tuesday evening, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church. “We’re very grateful
Find a job you love.
for their generosity in providing rehearsal space for the community choir,” Ingrid said. As for the type of music they are rehearsing, it covers a combination of all types of music and several different languages. They’re planning their first performance in May. “Quesnel seems to want a community choir based on the initial response,” she said. “Music brings people together, it’s a stress reliever and it makes you feel better. Despite the size of the community, Quesnel has an amazing talent pool.”
The mixed voices choir covers sopranos, altos, tenors and bases and everything in between. “We’re looking for additional voices and every voice falls within that range,” Ingrid said. “Anyone 16 and older, whose interested in joining the choir, is invited to come by any Tuesday evening at the Trinity Lutheran Church.” Down the road Q-City Singers are looking at performances in the community and beyond as well as seasonal concerts. To contact the community choir E-mail info@qcitysingers.ca or call Ingrid, 250-983-5656.

Helping Hope Air An exciting meeting for Quesnel Friends of Hope Air (FHA) was held Nov. 12. They celebrated Molly Hartley, Kally Lokken and Dayana Terlesky for their fundraising efforts. These young ladies raised $175 for Hope Air by selling at a local fair, ice tea and bracelets they’d made themselves. Each girl received a certificate of appreciation from FHA. They would also like to thank Fraser River GM for their $250 donation and Granville’s for their continued support by supplying coffee and treats for our meetings. Hope Air is a Canadian charity that organizes free, non-emergency medical flights to major centres for patients of any age in financial need. Check out their Facebook page “Quesnel Friends of Hope Air” for the next meeting date. All are welcome – bring your ideas and energy.

’Tis the season of spectacular sunsets As the season settles into winter, the atmospheric conditions produce outstanding sunsets, albeit a touch earlier than we might want.

Snow shovellers needed Better at Home is thriving, providing volunteers for a host of services to seniors in Quesnel. As autumn turns into winter the inevitable snow has arrived and there are 30+ clients needing a shovelling angel. Better at Home coordinator Brenda Gardiner is looking for about 12 or so individuals who will sign up just to shovel snow when needed.
Each volunteer will be assigned a client. “When it snows enough to merit a quick snow removal, you just go and get-er-done,” Brenda said. “Then report in the date and how much time you spent.” Each volunteer needs a criminal record check which is free for volunteers from the RCMP detachment. “I will match you
with a client in your area,” Brenda added. “Hey, it’s an exercise program that gives back in so many ways.”
For those interested, call Brenda, 250-9929156 for an application form and a criminal record check form.

Mites
The Toronto Blue Jays may not have won a World Series, but they do have the 2015 Most Valuable Player in the American League. Josh Donaldson, third basemen for Toronto took home the award last week defeating last years winner, centre fielder Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Acquired last offseason from the Oakland Athletics, Donaldson made an immediate impact for the team as he
played stellar defence and provided outstanding offence. He finished the year with 41 home runs, 123 runs batted in and an average of .297. He helped Toronto to their first playoff appearance since 1993 when they last won the World Series. Donaldson is now the second player in Jays history to win the award, joining George Bell who won in 1987. Toronto will look to carry their momentum from this year’s playoffs into 2016 along with their reigning MVP.

CAPSULE COMMENTS With Jessica Joly B.Sc. (Pharm)
Currently, in Canada, the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen is set at 4000mg. However, Health Canada may change this to a lower maximum dose due to the potential of liver injury caused by taking too much of the drug. There are 475 preparations containing acetaminophen in Canada and most are sold without a prescription. So it would be easy to get over the current limit. If you have ever had a colonoscopy, you’ll have had to suffer through the bowelcleansing routine of fasting and drinking 4 litres of a solution to clean you out. Not much fun! In the U.S., work is being done on an edible bowel cleansing product in which the laxative is incorporated into foods like puddings, pasta salad and smoothies…..a great improvement on the current method. It’s well-known that the omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon are good for our heart. It’s recommended we have two servings (3.5 oz) twice a week. Canned salmon is as good as the fresh fish to satisfy this advice. It’s low in mercury content, a contaminant found in some fish. If you have celiac’s disease (about 1 in 133 Canadians have) and are sensitive to gluten, let us know. We can flag your prescription file and check the contents of your medication for gluten content before we fill your prescription. It’s part of our job as your pharmacist. We will go that extra mile for you. It’s part of our professional pharmacy service.

Hearty soup offers a delicious healthy boost The new 30 Days app from the Heart and Stroke Foundation offers simple daily challenges to help you live a healthier life. One challenge suggests eating an orange vegetable. Orange veggies and fruit have been shown to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, thanks to their high vitamin and mineral content. This delicious soup from the Foundation’s recipe collection includes two orange vegetables. Carrot squash soup Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Makes: 7 1-cup servings Ingredients • 4 large carrots, chopped • 3 large whole cloves garlic
• 1 acorn squash, peeled and cubed (about 4 cups/1 L) • 1 onion, chopped • 2 tsp (10 mL) curry powder • 2 tsp (10 mL) dried thyme leaves or 1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) ground ginger or 2 tsp (10 mL) minced fresh • 4 cups (1 L) no salt added vegetable or chicken broth • 1/4 cup (50 mL) light sour cream or yogurt • 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped fresh cilantro Directions 1. In a large pot, combine carrots, garlic, squash and onion. Stir in curry powder, thyme and ginger. Pour in broth and bring to a boil. 2. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 40 minutes
or until carrots and squash are very tender. 3. Ladle soup in batches into a blender, or use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. 4. Ladle into bowls and dollop with a little sour cream and sprinkle with cilantro to serve. Tip: Make this soup in the slow cooker to bring to a potluck. Put all the ingredients into a slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup and then serve it right out of the slow cooker, keeping it warm on the buffet. Find more healthy recipes online at heartandstroke.ca/ recipes. – newscanada
Try this festive crowd-pleasing appetizer
Delight friends and family with this match-made-in-heaven bacon and rosemary bites recipe. Using only three ingredients, these crunchy festive appetizers are easy to make and will be a huge hit at any party. “Mingling over appetizers is the perfect way to kick-off a gathering with friends and family,” Paul Del Duca, senior vice president, fresh foods at Walmart Canada said. “Walmart’s selection of fresh and prepared foods means you can be ready to entertain at a moment’s notice.” Crunchy Bacon and Rosemary Bites Ingredients • 12 strips of naturally smoked bacon • 24 Great Value rosemary and olive oil wheat crackers • fresh rosemary Directions 1. oven to 300F (190C). B4Preheat www.quesnelobserver.com Line a sturdy baking tray with
aluminum foil; top with a wire rack sprayed with non-stick canola oil cooking spray. 2. Cut the strips of bacon in half widthwise. 3. Top each cracker with a cluster of rosemary leaves. Wrap loosely with half a strip of bacon. Transfer to wire rack on prepared baking tray, seam side down, leaving about 1” (2.5 cm) in between. Repeat with remaining ingredients. 4. Bake in centre of oven for 55-65 minutes or until nicely browned and crispy. Serve warm or at room temperature. Tips • For a beautiful presentation, garnish the serving platter with sprigs of fresh rosemary as an added touch. • Don’t wrap the bacon too tightly around the crackers; the bacon strips shrinks as they bake, if they’re too tight, the crackers will bend. – newscanada

How to throw a party – stress free Not much is as taxing as hosting a large group and things can derail fairly quickly. Stop, take a deep breath and follow this simple guideline to holiday entertaining that is certain to be merry and bright: Set a budget: It’s easy to get spendy when everyone will be scrutinizing the details of your event, but make sure to set a realistic limit. If you plan early enough, there are many DIY projects to spruce up your home décor without breaking the bank. Head to Pinterest for inspiration and your local dollar store for supplies. Whatever your budget, you can throw a great party. Make a guest list and check it twice: Who you invite to break bread with is important to a successful event. Don’t feel that you have to invite everyone and their friends in order to be a good host. It’s hard not to invite your crazy Aunt Evelyn, but you can probably skip the gossipy co-worker. Fill their plates: Whether you’re having it catered or tackling the job yourself, the holidays are a time for old favourites, but don’t be afraid to throw in a contemporary spin. Just don’t try a new recipe the day of the party. Test the food out on your family first to avoid serving 50 collapsed soufflés. And make it easy on yourself by only serving nibbles. People love to graze, it’s easier to make the dishes ahead
of time and this gives you the opportunity to offer variety to a group of diverse eaters. Set the mood: Don’t forget an essential element to entertaining: music. The tunes at any event really help to set the ambience, but with everything else that you’re doing, don’t add the time-consuming task of building a perfect mix. “Make it easy on yourself,” says SiriusXM Canada. They advise to simply use your computer or mobile device to access commercial-free music to suit every taste through SiriusXM Internet Radio. From Christmas classics to Hanukkah favourites, keep the party going with hits from the past, current club anthems, or traditional tunes. You can listen free for a limited time at www. siriusxm.ca. When it’s all done: Make sure all your guests have a safe ride home by having a few cabs pre-ordered. Surprise them with an adult “goodie bag” to take along, which may include water bottles, ibuprofen, a recipe for a “hair of the dog” cocktail, and anything that shows you care. Get creative. And as the door closes behind the very last guest, you deserve to sit down, relax and toast yourself for throwing a sensational holiday bash. – newscanada

Bring a personal touch to your gift giving In an era of retail store gift cards and store-bought wrapped items and gift bags, it’s always refreshing and touching to receive a heartfelt handmade gift from a loved one. According to craft experts the trend towards handmade holiday gifts is growing across the country. “More and more people are crafting away the stresses of the season by making personalized gifts for their families and friends,” explains Sara Douglass, Interim CEO for Stampin’ Up!, a stamping and papercrafting company. “Craft enthusiasts are even hosting gift and ornamentmaking parties to help each other cross off items from their list. Not only do guests leave with a new skill, the

cards, gifts and ornaments they make remind them of their festive gathering all season long.” You can start with the time honoured tradition of a handmade personalized greeting card. Thanks to the infinite choice of stamps and paper, you can choose to wish a funny, loving, peaceful, or religious holiday greeting that your loved ones will cherish. For example, if you’re going for a nostalgic look, Stampin’ Up!’s Home for Christmas designer series paper, cardstock, designer buttons and accessories feature hand-drawn imagery that evoke the feelings of Christmas past. Show the foodies on your list how much you care by sending handmade treats and pastries wrapped in
customized DIY boxes and bags decorated with ribbons, trim, twine, holiday stamp messages, red and gold diecut shapes and more. If you have found the perfect store-bought gifts, add personalized flair by wrapping them according to your loved one’s personality. Find original stamps, designer series paper and accessories to distinguish the gifts such as glittery and pink paper and embellishments for the girly girl and navy blue with sport-themed stamps for your sporty boy. For expert guidance, consider gathering a group and participating in a crafting party. Independent Stampin’ Up! demonstrators hold parties designed to help build crafting skills. – newscanada

PLAN NUMBER 1-2-579 APPEALING RUSTIC FEEL Natural stone accents and mullioned windows give this tidy rancher an appealing rustic look. Inside, the two-bedroom floor plan is ideal for a retired couple or a small family. Nine-foot high ceilings and a contemporary open design enhance the feeling of spaciousness. Factor in an unfinished basement, and this home might also suit a growing family. Entry is through an open courtyard, which could easily be gated to enclose a small garden filled with potted plants. The single front door is surrounded by windows that will bring natural light into the foyer. A staircase to the left of the foyer leads to the basement. A laundry room is tucked behind the stairwell, with access to the two-car garage with its built-in work bench. The spacious great room forms the hub of this home, with views to the back sundeck. A corner fireplace will warm the room in winter, while access to the sundeck will expand the living space in summer. The contemporary kitchen is equipped with an angled work island, a greenhouse window and a pantry cupboard. An optional buffet can be added to the dining area, increasing storage for dishes and glassware. The bedrooms are well separated, with the master suite located at the back of the house for quiet and privacy. The master suite includes a three-piece bathroom, a bayed window and a door to the rear sundeck. Another three-piece bathroom is situated just outside the second bedroom. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding, painted trim and decorative woodwork in the gables. This home measures 40 feet wide by 51 feet, 6 inches deep and has 1,294 square feet of finished living space. The design includes an unfinished basement. Plans for design 1-2-579 are available for $625 (set of 5), $710(set of 8) and $778 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling).
