provincial court judge has granted bail to a Chilliwack man facing child sex and child pornography charges, as well as three breaches of court-ordered conditions from when previously on bail and in custody. Crown counsel opposed bail for one-time school board candidate and district parents’ advisory council (DPAC) vice-president Corey Neyrinck at his bail review last Friday. In addition to the seven charges he faces, which include sexual assault, sexual interference of a person under 16, making or publishing child pornography and possession of child pornography, Neyrinck is alleged to

mber Price, Daris Lapointe and Eleasha Sabourin are the kind of women who get things done. All three are mothers with young children, extremely hard workers, and as if their lives didn’t have enough going on, the three decided to take on one more challenge: bringing a Syrian refugee family to Chilliwack. “I’ve got a big house, I could fill it with love for other people,” says Sabourin who is a Crown counsel at the Chilliwack Law Courts. “I think solving a lot of the world’s problems can be done by sharing, caring and love.” Lapointe, who is former MLA Barry
Penner’s wife and the woman behind the mini-free library in a Garrison Crossing park, says it’s easy to “rant” about things, as many people are doing. “But let’s make a positive change.” “All we have to do is give our time and energy,” adds Price of the The Book Man downtown. The three women, along with Lapointe’s parents and, hopefully soon one more person, will partake in a 40-year-old provision in the federal immigration act that allows a small group of employed adults to sponsor a refugee family. Most sponsorship of refugees traditionally comes from churches, and

The green line is the area in question through the Skwah reserve, the dotted red line is the emergency bypass proponents will need to design.
The city says they may not need to expropriate land on five properties on Berkeley Avenue that back onto the Hope Slough just west of Young Road for the Town Dyke project. The vast majority of the local First Nations reserve land in Chilliwack (in pink) will remain unprotected by the Town Dyke project.
Town Dyke project faces numerous hurdles BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com
T
he city’s plan to raise the Town Dyke to meet provincial flood protection standards faces numerous hurdles, including a jurisdictional morass, opposition from some residents and no guarantee of co-operation from the local First Nations. The Town Dyke upgrade project involves raising the dike from Young Road to Schweyey Road at Chilliwack Mountain. The project is the next step after the controversial raising of Young Road this summer to new provincial flood standards. Opposed by dozens of property owners along Young Road on Fairfield Island, including Brian Minter who owns Minter Country Gardens and the mayor’s own brother Dave Hallett who owns a home on the “wrong” side of the dike, the project was completed anyway. Sixty residents even filed a lawsuit against the city to try to stop the project, but the notice of civil claim was little more than an idle threat given the cost of going ahead with court action.
Possible land expropriation, questions over Skwah access
Another of the signatories on the lawsuit, Young Road property owner Rene Crawshaw, continues to issue concerns about the plan, insisting raising the Town Dyke will involve considerable expropriation of private land if the city is to follow riparian regulations. “They say there is enough room for the dike along Berkeley,” Crawshaw said. “There isn’t because of the riparian setbacks which is 30 metres from the high water mark. That includes all development including dikes. Federal law.” In a meeting with the Times, Mayor Sharon Gaetz and senior staff say they do not expect any expropriation to be necessary, and that part of the job of any engineering firm that responds to the request for expressions of interest (RFEI) issued last week, will be to find solutions to these potential challenges. The stretch of dike in question runs behind approximately 32 homes along Berkeley Avenue and adjacent roads before entering the Skwah reserve. The backyards of the first five homes on Berkeley west of Young Road go right to the Hope Slough, but director of engi-
neering David Blain said the city doesn’t know how much that area needs to be raised, and the study will look at “innovative ways” to protect the area. Some of those five homeowners maybe have other ideas, however, as three of them signed on to the original civil claim against the city filed in April of this year. One owner, Larry Gillanders, expressed his displeasure with the plan in a letter to city hall. “I want to go on the record that I found it a bit pretentious that the city engage in planning for a diking system that potentially involves private property in which the city has no claims or title for,” he wrote. Of further concern is that the current dike is the road that runs through the Skwah reserve from behind McCammon elementary school to Wolfe Road. The Skwah chief and council held a community meeting in September to discuss the city’s request for access to upgrade the dike. And while Chief Robert Coombes did not want to express his opinion on the project to the Times before they have discussions
with the city, this stretch of dike leaves most of his community unprotected. “I don’t think it’s a definite ‘no’ from Skwah,” Gaetz told the Times. “They just want past wrongs from other levels of government to be addressed and we support them on that. “We know there are outstanding right-of-way issues with the federal government.” Part of the RFEI issued by the city will require the proponent to consider a temporary/emergency bypass in the event of a flood and if Skwah does not allow access to the land. This bypass would run from Wellington Avenue south on Ashwell Road to Wolfe Road and then west to Chilliwack Mountain and would exclude approximately 308 homes, mostly townhouses in three complexes, in the city just west of Prospera Centre. As for Crawshaw, he is adamant the city should raise and extend the Wing Dyke through Island 22 to the Hope Slough and then the remaining distance to Chilliwack Mountain should be funded by the federal government
and would protect both Skwah and Shxwha:y Village. The problem with this, according to Blain, is that a permanent dike has to be at least 300 metres away from the shore of the river to avoid erosion that currently is seen on Island 22 and elsewhere in the city, such as Carey Point. A new alignment option from Young Road that far from the river “is the over $60 million option that was presented during the discussions about the Young road dike,” Gaetz said. Crawshaw doesn’t buy it, saying the local Sto:lo bands could access federal funds to protect their land while the city could protect a larger portion of city land, which includes properties on the west side of Young Road, including his. But Gaetz says city hall will rely on their engineers and any qualified proponents that come forward in response to the RFEI to solve the flood protection requirements facing the city. “We will try to be unobtrusive as much as we can but we have to protect $1 billion of assets, including our hospital, our schools, our railways, our highways. All of that needs to be protected but the city will do it in the way that has the least impact to our residents.”

These volunteers are needed in order to meet the 2015 goal of raising $148,000 in Chilliwack in their biggest fundraising effort of the year. The funds all stay in Chilliwack, and will assist with the ongoing needs of The Salvation Army food

Police cleared in case of man who fell while being chased N
o police officers will face criminal charges after a man who jumped a fence while fleeing police in Chilliwack last year fell down a cliff and was injured. The Aug. 5, 2014 incident was investigated by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) and was subsequently referred to the Criminal Justice Branch (CJB) to assess whether officers, apparently in the area when the suspect went over the edge of an embankment, should be charged with an offence. In a statement released Monday, the CJB concluded that while a number of officers ended up near the cliff, there { NEYRINCK, from page A1 }
have made up a fake polygraph company that vouched for his innocence. Crown Paul Blessin argued that “detention is justified” in front of Judge Richard Browning on Nov. 20 for a number of reasons. In one breach allegation, Neyrinck is accused of telling the mother of the alleged victim that police would not give him a polygraph, commonly known as a lie detector, so he hired his own company. An emailed letter was sent to the woman who said Neyrinck was asked several questions about the supposed crimes and that there was no indication he lied in the test. “It appeared to be made up out of whole cloth,” Blessin told Browning, adding the signature of Richard Woodrow Jr. on the letter “is a fictional person.” In another incident from April 2011, police checked on the door of the RV he was living in and found a web-capable PlayStation 3, an unplugged wireless router, and an insecure Wi-Fi signal throughout the RV park. As part of his bail he was not allowed to have access to the Internet. (Incidentally, the RV was his father-in-law’s, and during the search police found evidence that
Blames cops for tumbling down embankment is no evidence any of them “kicked, pushed, or hit the complainant so as to cause him to fall off of the embankment.” The incident began at 3:40 a.m. on Aug. 5, 2014 when police received a 911 call reporting that a suspect was intentionally driving a stolen van into a garage door. There was also a report the lone occupant of the vehicle appeared to have a gun, but this could not be confirmed. Two police vehicles pursued the van attempting to pull it over, a chase that ended when they reached a cul-de-sac and the van went off the road. The suspect is then reported to have
Made fake polygraph company led to charges of possession of child pornography against him as well.) At that time, Neyrinck was out on a $20,000 surety put up by a relative. A judge will later decide if that relative has to lose some or all of that money. Because the 29-year-old faces “many years in custody potentially” thanks to the serious nature of the substantive charges, and because he is alleged to have breached three times already, Blessin argued Neyrinck should be detained. Neyrinck’s lawyer Darrel Schultz asked instead that bail be granted with strict conditions, including what he called a “get-out-ofDodge” order. Schultz said his aunt was again willing to put up a surety for his bail “through her church in Creston,” and that Neyrinck would reside in a hotel in Creston until he found a place to live. Schultz pointed out Neyrinck has no criminal record, he was abused as a child by his drug-addicted mother, and “he certainly has learned the hard way what breaching does for someone.”
jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the bush, which was at the top of a steep embankment. During interviews with IIO investigators, the suspect admitted he was fleeing police, he admitted he was drunk, but he claimed someone else was driving. He claimed that he was scared, ran from the police, and jumped the fence where he faced a sheer cliff. He said he backed up and put his hands behind his head because he heard police officers yelling. It was then that he said he felt something on his back, he was hit and pushed over the edge. The suspect was not found that day by police and a nearby resident helped

the complainant that morning. When she asked the man what happened, he told her he “fell down the mountain” and that he had “slipped.” “Eventually he admitted he had been running from the police,” the CJB decision said. “He said nothing to her to suggest he had been kicked, pushed or hit.” He was arrested the next day at a motel with brass knuckles, a prohibited weapon. He later pleaded guilty to charges of possession of stolen property and dangerous driving, in connection with the stolen van and the police pursuit. “He told another officer who dealt
with him: ‘I wasn’t driving’ and ‘you were trying to kill me,’” according to the CJB report. The CJB found there were significant reasons to question the accuracy of what the complainant told IIO investigators. Among them, it was dark, he was drunk and he acknowledges he was running from police. But even if the complainant’s own statements were accepted as true, he himself couldn’t say whether it was an officer or a police dog or even “the guy in the van” that knocked him off the cliff. “The Branch has concluded that the standard for approving a prosecution is not met in relation to any of the officers who were subject to investigation. As a result no charges have been approved in the case.”

There has been, however, some opposition to the plan to bring in Syrian refugees. Many comments on social media appear as little more than thinly veiled racist attacks under the pretence that Canada has enough of its own social problems to bring in more people. As to those who oppose b r inging in refu gees based on security con-
cerns, there has been a collective amnesia that is hard for the three women to accept. Canada has a history of immigration and bringing in refugees. The country accepted 60,000 so-called “boat people” from Vietnam over 18 months in the late 1970s. A Fortune magazine poll in July 1938 found 67.4 per cent opposed to allowing German, Austrian or other political refugees to come to the U.S., and everyone knows what happened after that. Then there was the pre-Confederation opposition to Irish refugees in
Canada lest the country be over-run by “Fenian terrorists.” “I’m not First Nations,” Price says, pointing to how all Canadians save for aboriginals are the descendants of immigrants or refugees. “If we suddenly had a civil war and had to flee everything, how sad would it be if other countries were turning us away?” Sabourin asks. anada’s new federal government has a lot on its plate as it transitions its civil service from the previous administration. One thing that looks positive from their initial weeks in office is the amount of communication that appears to be happening with groups outside the sphere of Ottawa. This week’s first ministers meeting is one example of expanded communication. It’s the first time in seven years that B.C. Premier Christy Clark and the rest of the country’s premiers have met for talks with the prime minister. Talking strategy for dealing with climate change—an obvious discussion point with the United Nations Climate Change Conference getting underway next week in Paris – and the impending resettling of Syrian refugees in Canada are the two main issues. But the act of getting together to compare notes, listen to the regional challenges being faced by other areas of the country, and how they feel about specific issues is a good way to start the new government’s relationship with the provinces. It has been said many times that information is power. Creating a space for provincial leaders—the people heading up the jurisdictions responsible for the delivery of many government services—to share what works and what doesn’t with their federal counterparts is critical to moving forward.

Let’s all play our role for refugees A
s a whole, Canadians are a compassionate, caring and accepting people. We help those in need at home and around the world. That is why the issue of how quickly and how many Syrian refugees we should bring here has gripped the national media narrative for the last number of weeks. In the heat of an intense election campaign, Justin Trudeau promised that he would bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year. At the time, his pledge was just one of many made during the campaign, and both Election Day and the end of the year were still months away. With the Liberal government now in power and New Year’s Day fast approaching, more and more questions were being asked on how they could possibly process a full year’s worth of refugee claimants in less than 40 days, what the cost of such an operation would be, and how they could do it without compromising the safety and security of Canadians. It is the role of the government of Canada and its cabinet to make policy decisions like this. It is their job to
MP MARK STRAHL Be Our Guest determine if and how it can be done and, if they want Canadians to support their decision, they need to do it openly and transparently. Legitimate questions require thoughtful responses when security issues are on the line. It is the role of the Official Opposition to raise questions and to hold the government to account on this and any other policy decisions the government takes. We support bringing additional Syrian refugees to Canada, but we believe they should go through the same security screening as any other refugee claimants, and that this should be done before they arrive in Canada. The reasoning behind this position is that once these individuals arrive here, even if they are found later to be criminally inadmissible, they cannot be deported back to a refugee camp in Jordan, Lebanon or Turkey,
nor can they be removed and sent back to Syria. Once they land here, no matter what is discovered about them afterwards, they are staying here. The Official Opposition believes that there is no need to rush this process in order to meet an artificial, arbitrary deadline contained only in a Liberal campaign promise. I am glad that, after weeks of resistance, the Liberal government has now agreed with the Official Opposition and will be slowing down their plan. We will remain vigilant to ensure that due process is followed in the days and weeks ahead. Governments must select and screen applicants and help get them here. That’s their job. Opposition parties should ask questions to ensure that the process undertaken is safe, secure, effective and efficient, which is what we’re doing. I am encouraged to see that civil society, including faith groups, other organizations and individuals in Chilliwack and Hope are also choosing to play a role and have stepped forward and indicated a willingness to welcome and provide care for refugees once they arrive in Canada.
Caring Canadians in our communities right across the country will play a key role in ensuring that the next and very important stage of refugee resettlement and integration is effectively carried out. Government departments and bureaucrats in Victoria and Ottawa cannot integrate individuals into local communities as seamlessly or effectively as local organizations can. A number of years ago, my wife Lisa and I were fortunate to be part of a church that helped resettle refugee families from war-torn Sierra Leone. We saw how the congregation essentially adopted them into their own extended families, how basic needs were met, and how the lives of both the refugees and their Canadian sponsors were changed forever for the better. If we all play our respective roles in addressing this Syrian refugee crisis, Canada too will be the better for it. ◗ Mark Strahl is the Member of Parliament for Chilliwack—Hope. He was first elected in May 2011, and was re-elected in October 2015.

Please remember, brevity is the soul of wit. our Motherland, loved ones and culture behind, to start anew in a foreign land. The Syrians are war victims, uprooted (not by their choice), displaced, and all they are asking of us, is just this—that we give them that opportunity to live, to be able to put their kids to bed and know that they are safe, to see them grow up, and become productive citizens. Rest assured that the stringent screening process of refugees will take up to a year, and the legitimate newcomers will enter our great country and bear us no ills. So, let’s echo the Minister of Immigration and Refugees, John McCallum’s words during his interview on Persia ARIA TV (Nov. 9), “Let’s welcome them with smiles not scowls”. As Prince George rushes to deny these unfortunate human beings a chance to live, with their insensitive petition, Dorothy Friesen whose organization is ‘PG Citizens for Syrian Refugee Support’ says in her interview on CBC (Nov 17, 2015), “Except for the Indigenous people, we are all either refugees or immigrants.” Thanks for enlightening us Dorothy, as it seems that some individuals have no insight into Canadian history, or have selective amnesia. Let’s extend our welcome mat to the Syrian refugees, settle them into jobs (work can be therapeutic), and then watch the return tenfold. It will be a win-win situation, as we (refugees or immigrants) were offered a safe haven and in return, we do our part in helping build this great land of such diverse cultures. Thank you Canada. Through these tumultuous times, a light will always shine. Please go to YouTube (Love over Fear) and marvel at four young men from four different countries—Ammar from Egypt, Thomas from Paris, Derin from Turkey and Matt from New York. Let’s pay attention to these young men’s powerful message, and hope that someday, Utopia will prevail. Kee Lang Teo-Macdonald Chilliwack

Hydro men began walking about in the drizzle, flashlights in hand wearing glowing helmets, inspecting the tree and power line a few feet from my condo wall. My heart leaped for joy. But when they drove away moments later l whispered pleadingly “Please don’t go! Come back!” And they did. At 11:45 p.m. the entourage returned driving to the huge weeping willow at the end of Airport Road. I grabbed my umbrella, secured the candles and for the next half hour, stood outside in the dark, damp night watching experts at work. I witnessed two young men being hoisted up in a large bucket from one of the trucks. Air to ground communication danced between their steamy breath and heavy rain as the severed branches and power lines were inspected. I repeated over and over a mantra of thanks. At 2 a.m. the lights came on. I saw one of the team members drive into the compound, get out and converse with a concerned neighbour. CHILLIWACK’S
They are humans, just like us Editor: In light of the attack in Paris on Nov. 13, I am hearing of a petition signed by more than 1,200 individuals (so far) in Prince George, against the Syrian refugee settlement in their town, and the rhetoric from our neighbours in the deep south, in near hysterics, “keep them out . . . !” “Them” would be the unfortunate displaced human beings (who breathe and function like you and I do—no difference) known as Syrians, whom we have now branded as “beasts” perhaps, thus the need “to keep them out.” While we argue and postulate about the presumed threat that the Syrian refugees may pose, decide their fates, then condemn them to an unthinkable thereafter, let’s not forget that these are breathing and living humans, who have a horror story to tell. I can no longer sit back, listen to pathetic outcries, and not do my part in painting a real picture of war. So here, a story in a few words that will not garner front page headlines, but will perhaps, lend meaning to the word terror, and its implication. Until one experiences it, it’s just another word in our Meriam-Webster. Imagine yourself running for your life, diving for bomb shelters when you hear planes overhead, frantically getting home before curfew or risk being shot, and then seeing the males in the family (fathers and brothers) mandated to act as a vigilante, armed only with a baton to “fight the enemies.” Then there’s the unthinkable— they may not come home. Imagine parents sacrificing their children with these few words, “Leave, there is no hope here . . . .” That’s war. An ugly word, and to live through it, there’s no word in the dictionary to describe the horror. I hope that you will take a moment, read and then digest the above. This may help you see the Syrian refugee crisis through a different set of lenses, and draw your own conclusion that they are no different from you and I—human beings not beasts (which unfortunately, some have painted with one huge brush following the Paris attack). I would like to believe that the majority of Canadians are decent people, superceding the minority whose ideology echoes that of our southern neighbour, that is, allow only Christian refugees in, and keep the “others” out. Religion has no place in determining the fates of human beings. Take another moment of your time and reflect on this—most of us never dreamt, nor chose to leave

The second coming of Jesus will be a gift
E
verywhere we go for the next five weeks, there will be tinsel, Christmas lights and Santas—either cardboard or costume. There will be that infernal Christmas music in shopping malls. And people frantically looking for things to buy, and worrying about Christmas. Some churches will be dressed for Christmas before November is over, but most will be waiting for Mary and Joseph. Traditionally, churches approach the coming of the Christ child with a season of preparation. For most of us, Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. We do not decorate for Christmas, it has not yet arrived. Usually, there is an Advent wreath and in my church, figures of the nativity are moved week by week from the far end of the church up to the creche. On Christmas Eve, we reveal our creche, and have the children come up and help place the baby Jesus in the manger. Mary and Joseph have reached the stable, and she has given birth in the night. The idea of the wreath says something about the season. As the darkness approaches, we light one candle after another. Our candle lighting builds to Christmas, when we light
our final candle, the Christ candle. The progression of the Advent candles reminds us that we live in a second advent, as we await the exciting second coming of Jesus, this time as King of kings, and Lord of lords. Candles are perfect for advent wreaths, combining fire and light. Often evergreen boughs are involved, a sign of life and God’s faithfulness. The four candles of the advent wreath have been assigned different names, but the ones commonly used are Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. If real candles are used with dry boughs, the wreath can have a hidden edge of danger, risk and expectation. Advent is not meant to be high-pressure. It is a season of getting ready, often of fasting and prayer. Old traditions of making gifts by hand touched on this aspect, of taking the time and being prepared. Jesus, the bridegroom, is coming, and we trim our lamps. (Matthew 25) We should be mending fences, extending the gift of forgiveness, making peace with others, expressing heartfelt love, seeking the oil of holiness without which none of us will see the Lord. If your advent is directed toward sharing the joy and wonder of the approaching nativity—God among us—rejoice. If our advent heralds the return of
the Lord of glory, a day of judgement and the Bridegroom’s cry, then let us be contrite and thoughtful. Let us remember that we were made for the Lord, and be sure our lamps are lit and our oil plenished. The second coming of Jesus will be a gift, filled with joy and gladness. Some, whose lamps have gone out, will not welcome it. Christmas decorations don’t last long. The superficial smiles, Christmas music, and laughter get put away, too. Christmases without the reason for the season make us a people of the outside, not the inside —a people of outer appearances, fake joy, overdone sweetness, under pressure to make a good show and spend a lot of money. Santa Claus and commerce create a lie, and push aside the underlying richness of God’s gift. The Christ Candle is in the middle of the Advent wreath. It will be lit Christmas Eve. The Christ Candle reminds us that Jesus is among us—and God is reaching out to us. For those wishing to get the most out of Advent, and out of Christmas, may I suggest attending your local church throughout December and especially this Christmas Eve. ◗ Reverend John Sovereign is the rector at St. Thomas Anglican Church.

Wenatchee puts an end to 10-game winning streak BY GREG LAYCHAK glaychak@chilliwacktimes.com
A
fter a weekend of close scoring the Chilliwack Chiefs split a pair of home games, first beating the Powell River Kings Friday, then falling to the Wenatchee Wild the next evening at Prospera Centre to end a 10-game winning streak. After a 3-2 overtime win against the Kings, the Chiefs lost 3-2 against their top division rivals the Wild on Saturday, putting the local team back in second place as the Times goes to press. When Powell River’s Carter Turnbull scored on Chiefs goalie Aidan Pelino Friday, he was the first to put Chilliwack behind in scoring since just over 530 minutes of game play. That was near the end of the first period, but Jordan Kawaguchi answered 22 minutes later as the second frame came to a close to tie the game 1-1. Kings Tristan Mullin gave his team hope when he responded with his goal with three minutes left in the game to give Powell River the lead.
Darren Francis photo
Wenatchee Wild forward Joseph Drabin lands on Chiefs goaltender Aidan Pelino Saturday after a hit from defender Mark Esposito at home on Prospera ice.
Dennis Cholowski, however saved the Chiefs by scoring with 31 seconds left in the final period to take the game into overtime. That gave Darien Craighead the chance he needed to finish the game with his goal at 48 seconds into the first OT frame, sealing the 3-2 win for Chilliwack. And the Chiefs would come out on the bad end of a similar scoring pattern the following night when they hosted the Wenatchee Wild. The division rivals were vying for first place and alternated scoring, each notching up a point in the first two periods after the Wild opened scoring midway through the first frame. But Kyle Stephan’s goal for Wenatchee at 15:41 would go unanswered, edging the Wild past the Chiefs on the scoresheet and in the Mainland division standings. Craighead and Jake Smith scored goals for Chilliwack in that contest. Both Chiefs Goalies boast streaks of their own. Matteo Esposito has won in his last six full-game performances, and Pelino was at five-in-a-row until the Saturday loss to Wenatchee.

eed a shave? Are you partaking in Movember? If you answered yes to either of those queries then you will definitely want to attend this Saturday’s Chief’s game at Prospera Centre. Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop will be shaving fans’ mustaches and or beards by donation, with the funds going to help fight prostate cancer. A pair of Chiefs players have also stepped up to help raise awareness for Movember. Chilliwack’s top goal scorer, Vimal Sukumaran, along with assistant captain Mark Esposito, will be at centre ice during the first intermission, having their faces manscaped, courtesy of Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop staff. Barry Wolff’s squad had a Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde pair of games last weekend at the “Train Station.” On Friday, first star Lawson Fenton stopped 37 of 38 pucks fired his way as the Express upended the Wenatchee Wild 4-1. On Saturday, you could say the kindness of Dr. Jeckyll prevailed, as Coquitlam were nice hosts to Penticton. The BCHL’s top-ranked Vees slammed
Coquitlam 8-1. The Express are led by a pair of 19-year-old forwards in Colton Kerfoot and Jackson Cressey. Kerfoot, who will call Harvard home next season, has a team leading 34 points in 25 games, while Cressey, who is taking his smarts and hockey talents to Princeton, has recorded 27 points and 38 penalty minutes in just 20 games played. Chilliwack is in the midst of a seven-game home stand and following this Saturday’s contest will play a back-to-back home set next weekend as Coquitlam returns on Friday followed by a visit from the feisty Nanaimo Clippers on Dec. 5. › Sports The Chilliwack Giants midget team beat an 8-1 Coquitlam team 28-21 last weekend in the playoffs after two weeks off, moving them to 7-3 on the season and earning them a third-place standing in the league. Coming from a 14-6 deficit in the first half, quarterback Jordan Fox connected with Marius Anghel for a touchdown. A two point conversion tied the game at 14 as the Giants defence started to improve in sync with the offence. Chilliwack’s Giants then took a TD lead before Coquitlam was able to keep pace, scoring again to make it 21-21 with only four minutes in the game. In the last 30 seconds, the Giants scored their game winning major against a deflated Coquitlam defence, ending the match at 28-21. The Giants will play the Langley Stampeders on Sunday Nov. 29 in Langley at Macleod Athletic Park.
Hancock twists the right arms
Local arm wrestler Justin Hancock placed first and third in his class at the World Armwrestling League (WAL) Washington State Championship in Longview, Wash. on Saturday. The Chilliwack member of the Vancouver Arm Wrestling Club won gold with his right hand and bronze with his left in the 216-pound and over weight class, qualifying him for next year’s regionals in Las Vegas. QB sneak pays off for Grizz
The G.W. Graham AA varsity football team beat Surrey’s Holy Cross Crusaders in their quarter-final game 33-27 on a play that left it all out there Saturday at BC Place. No strangers to dramatic victories, the No. 1-ranked Grizzlies coaching staff decided to run a quarterback keeper on fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line—in overtime. The gamble paid off with QB Gabe Olivares following his offensive line into the end zone, and moving the team on to the B.C. semifinals this weekend against North Vancouver’s Carson Graham Eagles back at BC Place. That game-winning TD chance was provided by a blocked Crusader extra point that by Graham’s special teams. All the end-of-game excitement followed an early 21-7 lead at the start of the third quarter from three Olivares TD passes, first to Tyler Sprott followed by a pair to Emerson Smith. A major from both teams (Graham’s a 19-yard TD run by Von Richardson) made the score 27-14 heading into the final quarter. And
after a dramatic two-touchdown comeback from Holy Cross, the blocked kick and an OT fourth down plunge saw the Grizzlies to next playoff round.
Two-game sweep for UFV
Canada West scoring leader Kayli Sartori and her Chilliwack counterpart Shayna Cameron had a big weekend for the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades women’s basketball team, leading a two-game road sweep of the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George. Sartori upped her stats with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists in Friday’s 80-68 win over UNBC, then racked up 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals the following night during the next night’s 78-67 victory on the road. Sartori’s 9-of-15 shooting performance from the floor that night nudged her conference-leading scoring average back up to 20 points per game. Fifth-year guard Cameron got a team-high 21 points in Friday’s game hitting 9-of13 shots from the field, including all three of her three-point attempts. And she followed that performance Saturday going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc on her way to 14 points to contribute to the Cascade victory. The Cascades women’s basketball team finish the first semester with away games against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack next Friday at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 5 p.m.
World juniors could claim Chiefs Canada jersey. Whoever makes the roster will stay and play in Cobourg and Whitby, Ont., until hopefully Dec. 19, when the final is played. Chiefs head coach and general manager Jason Tatarnic will be calling upon the Chiefs depth to hold the fort while the aforementioned players are away. There is the possibility that any

A great night to celebrate s a local Chamber, we are very thankful to have positive and effective partnerships with the City of Chilliwack, City Council, Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation, Tourism Chilliwack, Downtown Business Improvement Association, UFV, as well as many other notable organizations that contribute to this great community. Without the work of those who serve, our community would not be the same and we thank you. We continue to work hard to further our mission statement, “To create the best environment for business in Chilliwack.” Therefore it’s really an honour for the Chamber to be able to recognize the business excellence in our great community by hosting our 21st Annual Business Excellence Awards on Jan. 23, 2016. With only eight weeks to go it is time to get ready for this “not to miss” event with the theme this year “Rat Pack in the Wack.” We would like to see our guests dressed in the era of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and the rest of the “Rat Pack gang” to give the event a great atmosphere. Thank you to everyone that took the time to nominate. We’ve received more than 200 nominations, and all the nominees should be very proud. A customer, co-worker, colleague or friend took

For many of those people, a set of good wheels can transform their lives. That’s why, since 2004, the Chilliwack Times has teamed with local car dealerships and repair shops to give away a fully refurbished car to a deserving family or individual at Christmas time. A fairy tale with a twist truly heartwarming tale of friendship, whimsy, and medieval fantasy will capture the imaginations of kids and adults alike when The Reluctant Dragon comes to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Dec. 6. The award-winning and truly innovative Tears of Joy Theatre of Portland, Ore. will return to The Centre to bring this whimsical and fun-filled show to the stage through their inspirational and captivating puppet storytelling. For an afternoon of entertainment that will leave the kids spellbound, make sure to join as the legend of The Reluctant Dragon comes to life. Many generations have grown up listening to stories of brave knights, grand castles, and evil dragons—yet the story of The Reluctant Dragon adds a tender twist to the fairytale formula. The story begins in a medieval hamlet, where a young boy discovers a daunting dragon living in the hillside above his village. Yet, while the dragons in other tales might love to breathe fire and devour fair maidens, the beast of The Reluctant Dragon is just that . . . reluctant. After the boy discovers that this particular dragon is more passionate in poetry, plays, and reading, the two become best friends. But, unfortunate-

I want to mark it on my calendar so I don’t miss it.’ “This is what makes my career as a singer the most worthwhile . . . having people respond like this and the opportunity to give back within

However, the dragon’s gentle soul quickly wins over Sir George, who decides to come to the aid of the two friends and help them hatch a cunning plan. The trio go on to stage a thrilling mock battle (complete with jousting sure to get the kids into exciting medieval-spirit), and trick the villagers into believing the dangerous dragon is defeated—when really he just wanted to live in peace all along. The dragon finally gets his wish however, and after accepting their new neighbour, the village, the boy, and The Reluctant Dragon live happily ever after, concluding a joyful of a story of friendship and adventure. Benjamin Butterfield joins Sarah Hagen for a morning concert at the Cultural Centre on Nov. 27
Butterfield joins Hagen at Centre
T
he success of the opening installment of the Chilliwack Cultural Centre’s 2015/16 Classical Music Series will continue with a special return by one of the stars of previous years. Sarah Hagen will welcome the world-renowned tenor and her long-time collaborator Benjamin Butterfield back to The Rotary Hall Studio Theatre at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 27, for a duet sure to be flowing with inspirational ambience and captivating classical musicianship. Mu s i c h a s d e f i n e d Butterfield’s life from the beginning. Raised in a musical family in Victoria, his studies at Victoria Conservatory of Music, Banff Centre’s Theatre Studio Ensemble and McGill University honed his magnificent voice into that which has been heard in some of the most renowned venues in the world. His luxurious voice and astonishing musicianship have taken Butterfield on an international journey of musical mastery, performing with national orchestras and operas across North America, Europe, and Asia, before
returning to his home on Vancouver Island, where he now presides as Associate Professor and Head of Voice at the University of Victoria. There may be no more exciting a partner for Butterfield in his appearance in Chilliwack than Hagen, the master pianist, storyteller, and contemporary classical music star that has both cultivated The Centre’s fantastically successful morning concert series, and gained many accolades for her open, friendly, and personable performances. From winning the BC Touring Council’s 2015 Touring Artist of the Year Award to pioneering these informal concert formats, in which the performers mingle with the audience over complementary refreshments, Hagen’s name has become synonymous with musical prowess and personable performance. ◗ Tickets for the Nov. 27 concert are $27 for adults, $24 for seniors, and $22 for students and are available at The Centre Box Office, visit www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca or call 604-391-SHOW(7469) for more information.

The Spectacular Seasonal Celebration Returns Winter Harp Back to Conjure Matchless Christmas Magic at The Centre You truly know Christmas is around the corner when one very special show makes its way to Chilliwack. A night of resplendent medieval attire, intricately carved instruments, and the spectacular sounds of Christmas echoing through the centuries, Winter Harp is the supreme celebration of seasonal spirit, and it returns to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on December 18, 2015. A fantastic show that has become a local favourite in The Centre’s entertainment advent calendar, Winter Harp performed to sold-out audiences for the past three years – make sure you’re part of the magic this year and book your tickets today! Whatever Christmas means to you, Winter Harp captures that feeling. From the warmth and comfort of snowy winter nights around the fire and the making of memories with family and friends, to the glorious chorus of Christmas carols and mirth of traditional songs, this show offers it all in one luxurious display of the essence of that special time of year. It’s an experience that Lori Pappajohn, harpist, founder, and director of Winter Harp, believes resounds with everybody in a profoundly personal way. “Christmas is about memories” says Lori. “When people come to our concerts, they bring their memories with them. Our songs and stories take them back in time to special places -- maybe when they were young, or their children were young. These are Christmases they will never forget, and these memories are often stirred at our concerts.” Memories and the past are intimately tied in to the heart of Winter Harp. So much more than just a concert, the show draws on centuries’ worth of musical and aesthetic tradition to completely immerse the audience in an atmosphere of resplendent yuletide beauty – an aim that inspired Lori to found the ensemble 7253840
23 years ago. “I love Christmas music which is some of the most joyful music ever written” Lori reveals “and Winter Harp came from the idea of wanting to share the beauty and exuberance of this music with others on instruments rarely heard - namely harps and rare medieval instruments. And as most carols are 200 to 800 years old, and as our instrument styles date back as far as 800 years, it made complete sense to dress in a style that reflected that era. So while our music transports you back in time sonically, our medieval attire transports you visually.” With this flawless union of historic instruments, inspirational interpretations of well-loved Christmas classics and carols, and striking aesthetics – expect to be transported to a magnificent cathedral-like setting complete with shimmering candlelight – Winter Harp truly defines the beauty of Christmas and winter. Witnessing their show first-hand is an experience that will illuminate your holiday season with unmatched
Christmas atmosphere, so make sure to buy your tickets today to experience the wonder of Winter Harp – where Christmas-time begins! Tickets are available by calling The Centre Box Office at 604-391-SHOW(7469) or at www. chilliwackculturalcentre.ca Winter Harp is generously sponsored by; Platinum Sponsor: Canadian Tire, Silver Sponsor: Amax Praetorian, Bronze Sponsors: Laurie Throness MLA, Minter Country Gardens, MNP LLP, Wagner Applicances, John Martin MLA, Media Sponsor: Chilliwack Times, Government Sponsor: Department of Canadian Heritage, City of Chilliwack, British Columbia Arts Council, Province of British Columbia.

augmented by members of the Metropolitan Orchestra, the Chilliwack Community Band and the Gospel Brass. All ages are welcome with an emphasis on encouraging youth to enjoy the experience of playing in an orchestra. Selected programmes cover the major events of the year— Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving—and highlight solo artists from the community, both vocal and instrumental. Pettigrew, who we thank for his inspiration, had his formal musical training in New Zealand, where he enjoyed playing in the city symphony orchestra. He has led an interesting and
varied life, 15 years of which was spent as a missionary pilot in the Andes in South America. In 1979 he came to Chilliwack and headed up the aviation program at Trinity Western College until his retirement in 1991. He has had the honour of being named in the Aeronautical Association Hall of Fame for his designs of large-scale electric-powered models. With so many interests Pettigrew still continues to play his oboe and lives in Chilliwack with his wife Rosella. ◗ The CSOPO plays Nov. 29 at the Alliance Church on Young Road at 6:30 p.m. with a full augmented orchestra.

If you purchase gifts, then try wrapping them with reusable or recyclable materials such as gift bags, newspaper, or brown packing paper. Also, keep in mind that Curbside Collection will not occur on Christmas or New Year’s Day. Refer to your curbside calendar or chilliwack.com/calendar for the alternate collection days.

Christmas Food Drive & Shred-a-Thon
Emterra Environmental, in partnership with the City of Chilliwack, ShredIt, and the Cottonwood Mall, invite you to join in the spirit of Christmas to ensure the local food bank shelves are full this holiday season. Shred-It will shred your confidential documents for free. Non-perishable food items or cash donations for the Salvation Army are greatly appreciated. Saturday, December 5, 2015 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Cottonwood Mall, south parking lot
Snow Removal in Chilliwack During a snowfall event, we request that residents assist City crews’ efforts by removing vehicles from the street and keeping drains clear. The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions, therefore the travelling public is requested to use caution and ensure you have proper tires for the weather. The City’s Highway and Traffic Bylaw requires that all property owners clear the sidewalk adjacent to their property by noon the day following a snowfall event. Please help keep pedestrians safe by clearing snow as soon as possible after a snowfall. For more information, including a map of priority roads, please visit the City’s website at chilliwack.com/snow or call 604.793.2810.
Chilliwack Homelessness Action Plan
A task force has been appointed to guide the development of a Homelessness Action Plan for the City. The plan will feature clear goals, measurable objectives and specific actions to help end homelessness in Chilliwack, clearly articulating the role of the City and others. Updates from the task force will be placed on the City’s website. Visit chilliwack.com/homeless to learn more.

Don’t let a preventable fire ruin your Christmas
Nothing ruins Christmas like a fire that could have been prevented. Enjoy a fire safe holiday by following these guidelines: • • • •
Always turn Christmas lights off before leaving home or going to sleep. If you’re buying a natural tree – test for freshness by tapping the base of the tree on the ground. If the needles fall or can be pulled off easily, the tree is too dry. Do not overload electrical circuits. Ensure all Christmas lighting is labelled ‘ULC’ or ‘UL’. Water your tree often.
Please ensure your smoke alarms are in good working condition and that you have made a home fire escape plan. For more information visit chilliwack.com/fire.
