FAST bytes extra food day Folks who use the 100 Mile Food Bank will be able to visit the facility three times in December. The Food Bank will increase the number of distribution days from two to three because it was felt that with there being five weeks in December, it would be too long for food to last from Dec. 15 to Dec. 25. So, this December, the Food Band will be open on Dec. 1, 15 and 22. The Food Bank usually distributes on the first and third Tuesday of the month, but the society felt it would be better for everyone to also be open on the fourth Tuesday. Gaven Crites photo
“What I feel when I see a little child in their regalia dancing for the first time, that’s what I call a spiritual awakening,” says Louise Alphonse, a member of the Canim Lake Band, which is one of five finalists in a province-wide video storytelling campaign that could net $50,000 toward health and well-being programs.

The Canim Lake Band (Tsq’escenemc) could use your vote. The local First Nations community is one of five finalists in a provincewide video storytelling campaign that could net $50,000 toward health and well-being programs. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Pacific Blue Cross started the “Share the Care” initiative, recognizing previous funding recipients for their contributions in promoting health and wellness in their respective communities. The Canim Lake Band (CLB) is being recognized for its Wellness Program and White Feather Health Centre, which help ensure the social and holistic well-being of its com-
munity members by supporting the pursuit of culturally relevant, active, and healthy lifestyles. Pacific Blue Cross, a provider of health, dental and travel benefits, has promised each of the five organizations a $5,000 donation for participating in the campaign. British Columbians are now invited to vote for their favourite video at www.pac. bluecross.ca/75thAnniversary. The two videos with the most votes at the end of the campaign (on Dec. 6) will have their donations increased to $50,000 and $10,000, respectively. Winners will be announced in early January. Louise Alphonse is featured in the Canim Lake Band video, talking about the importance of culture and tradition while strolling in
Vancouver’s Stanley Park. “Through the residential school trauma, we lost a lot of our culture and we lost a lot of our traditional teachings,” says Alphonse, who makes traditional arts-and-crafts like dance regalia and moccasins. “What I feel when I see a little child in their regalia dancing for the first time – that is what I call a spiritual awakening.” The White Feather Health Centre is responsible for the overall well-being and health of all CLB members, providing preventive care, home support and referral services for detox and treatment programs. The Wellness Program also offers a variety of services, including family support services, cultural activities for children and youth, assessments and referrals for community mem-
bers to access external resources, and a community justice program. The CLB received funding from Pacific Blue Cross in the past for a traditional arts-and-crafts program, which was taught by Alphonse. $50,000 is a huge figure that could be used in a variety of ways to help the community, says Barb Geurtsen, a counsellor with the Wellness Program. “We could do so much with it. I don’t know what we would do yet, but there are so many things we could do.” The other finalists in the campaign are the West Kootenay Community TEETH Clinic Society; Charlford House Society for Women; Streetohome; and the Crisis Intervention & Suicide Prevention Centre of BC.
Syrian refugee crisis topic of meeting A local group is laying the groundwork and exploring the possibility of welcoming a family of Syrian refugees to 100 Mile House, starting with two community meetings on Dec. 3. Millions of Syrians have been displaced by a relentless civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people since 2011. As the Liberal government of
Canada moves ahead with its goal of welcoming 25,000 refugees from that country in the coming months – 2,500 of which are expected to arrive in British Columbia – towns and cities across the country are preparing to welcome the expected influx of newcomers. Kimberly Vance-Lundsbye, the Welcoming Communities co-ordina-
tor with Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy, is helping organize the community meeting, along with Rob Diether of the Friendship Centre and Reverends Kris and Keith Dobyns of St. Timothy’s Anglican Church. “Rather than have a lot of little groups working on a big project on their own, I thought it would be good to have an open house for any-
one who is interested to know what it takes to sponsor a refugee family privately, and also what the government is doing,” explains Vance-Lundsbye. “I think if people want to help and get together to talk about that, I want to help provide them with a space to do that.” Continued on A4
SHARE A BEAR
The twin teddy bears are back for the annual Share-a-Bear campaign, which launches this week in BC Liquor Stores throughout the province. From now until Christmas, BC Liquor Store customers can purchase a set of twin pandas for $12.50, and one of the twins will be shared with a local community charity. Each year, BC Liquor Store employees select charities in their communities that help families in need.
PACS GET FUNDING
The B.C. Liberal government has provided $86,680 to Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) and the District Parent Advisory Committee (DPAC) in the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District (SD27) to help support student activities outside of the classroom. PACs in 100 Mile House, 108 Mile Ranch, Lone Butte, Forest Grove, Lac La Hache, Anahim Lake, Bridge Lake and Williams Lake will be receiving grants. The funds will be used to enhance the student experience through extracurricular activities. These grants cover various costs.

Local Hospice Society celebrates 30 years of service
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the 100 Mile District Hospice Palliative Care Society decided to put a memorial bench in the District of 100 Mile House Memorial Garden next to the cemetery. Noting the Hospice Society started in 1985, society president Bill Rose says they decided to do something in commemoration of 30 years of service in the community. “We decided to get a commemorative bench set up at the Memorial Garden.” Rose explains the Hospice Society had to buy the bench through the District. “They do all the work, get it built and installed and we paid them.” The total cost was $1,624. “We started a fundraiser and put a few notices out that we had this bench we had to pay for, so at the various venues they attended, we had a box set up, explained what it was for and took donations. “People were donating cash and a few companies came forward and gave us some money. As of Nov. 10, we had enough money through donations to pay for the bench.” Rose says the bench is just inside the gate of the Memorial Garden. “People can go in, sit down and just relax. They can rest and contemplate their thoughts while visiting their loved ones.” The plaque on the bench reads: “100 Mile Hospice Society To Honour 100 Mile Hospice & All Those Served In The Past And Future.” Hospice facts • Hospice focuses on quality of living when a cure is no longer an option. • When physical and emotional needs are sensitively me, the journey toward death – though always difficult

Prince George man going to trial for P ANNUAL threatening RCMP with chainsaw A Christmas

Appearing in Williams Lake Supreme Court on Nov. 16, a Prince George man had his trial date set as a result of an
Extreme weather shelter program clarified The information provided by BC Housing about extreme weather shelter spaces in the story, headlined "Help available for vulnerable people," on page A4 of the Nov. 19 edition of the 100 Mile House Free Press, was not supposed to be released to the media. While there are 10 extreme weather shelters funded for 100 Mile House, folks have to be referred by the Canadian Mental Health AssociationSouth Cariboo (CMHA-SC). CMHA-SC has an office at 555 Cedar Ave. in 100 Mile House and they can also be contacted at 250-395-4883. If the CMHASC office cannot be reached, the 100 Mile House RCMP can also make referrals. The extreme weather shelter program runs from Nov. 1 to March 31.
altercations with volunteer firefighters and RCMP members on July 3. When Brandt Miller appears in Williams Lake Supreme Court on June 13, 2016, he will be facing charges of assault, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. According to the July
4 100 Mile House RCMP report, they were called out to an “assault in progress” on Marguerite Road at Deka Lake around 8:30 p.m. Members of the Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department were responding to a call about a campfire that had been started. After being reminded there was a fire ban in place, it is alleged
the accused became abusive toward the firefighters and attempted to flee in a fire truck. The firefighters managed to stop him from taking the fire truck, but two of them were assaulted during the process. The 100 Mile RCMP members arrived at the scene and attempted to speak with the accused who was belligerent
with officers. It is alleged Miller then grabbed a chainsaw, started it up and used it in a threatening manner toward the police officers. A brief stand-off ensued and the accused was subdued with pepper spray. Two officers and two firefighters were treated for their injuries by emergency health services personnel.

With change of government, HIV strategy needed “HIV in Canada?” It’s a question I often hear on World AIDS Day (Dec. 1). Many of us think of HIV/ AIDS as an issue affecting other countries. However, what about an HIV epidemic in Canada? More than 70,000 Canadians are living with HIV, and on average, seven to eight new infections happen every day. While these numbers are concerning, Canada’s overall rate of new infections is still lower than the global average. Nonetheless, HIV has reached epidemic levels in key populations across this country of ours. In certain communities, the virus is more prevalent than in countries around the world hardest hit by the HIV epidemic. In the Ahtahkakoop First Nation in Saskatchewan, for example, 3.5 per cent of the population is living with HIV. In Toronto, an estimated

anadians have shown significant support for the resettlement of Syrian refugees across the country. During the federal election campaign, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised his Liberal government would bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to this country by Dec. 31, 2015. Following his election victory, Trudeau reiterated the resettlement project was going ahead and he immediately started working with his cabinet ministers to ensure the deadline was met. However, there was a loud outcry from the federal opposition parties about their concerns about Trudeau’s deadline and how intense the screening would be to make sure no terrorists could slip through during the rush to resettle Syrian refugees. Worldwide, and in Canada, anxiety and fear intensified significantly when terrorists executed a co-ordinated attack in Paris, killing 130 people and injuring 368 others, including 100 seriously. Fear of terrorist attacks in Canada started to bubble into hysteria for many people, as they put Trudeau’s Syrian resettlement program under the microscope. The paranoia about terrorists slipping through with the Syrian refugees spread quickly across the country. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall led the charge against accepting refugees and sent a letter to Trudeau calling on the federal government to suspend the program because the sheer volume could “undermine the refugee screening process.” British Columbia Premier Christy Clark had some milder concerns initially, but now the B.C. Liberals will welcome Syrian refugees with open arms and support. In response, the federal government has tweaked its resettlement program by changing the goal posts. Now, the aim is to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees by Jan. 1, 2016, and resettle the remainder in January and February. Furthermore, women, children and families will get the priority ahead of single men unless they are LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) or part of a family unit. However, the social media has been broiling with thoughts and concerns about Trudeau’s Syrian resettlement program. A lot of those comments have been bordering on, if not outright, racism and bigotry. Anonymity can bring out the worst in some people. Meanwhile, there are groups in small B.C. communities, including 100 Mile House, looking at the possibility of welcoming or adopting Syrian refugees. While there may be some concerns about jobs and inclusion in rural communities, 100 Mile House has an affordable housing market, a need for trained professionals, strong Welcoming Communities and English as Second Language programs, and helpful Christian community. Read page A3 in this edition of the Free Press for details on an upcoming meeting.

Canada’s national HIV strategy was written more than 10 years ago and doesn’t include actions related to any of the new scientific developments that should be guiding our national response. These new developments include the fact that people who start treatment soon after infection stand a good chance of living a nearnormal lifespan and of not being infectious to others. Canada has a lot to learn from other countries. This World AIDS Day is a perfect opportunity for us to think globally and act locally. Let’s create our own ambitious strategy to address HIV in Canada. Laurie Edmiston is executive director of CATIE, Canada’s source for HIV and hepatitis C information.

Laundry service should stay in Interior hospital Stripping jobs away from local hospital will hurt our community
To the editor: The provincial government’s plan to outsource hospital laundry services to a private corporation will eliminate 175 jobs throughout the Interior that pay livable wages, including full-time employment lost in 100 Mile House. These jobs will all be transferred to a private sector well known for paying some of the lowest wages in the province. It is difficult to believe that private cleaners will be
bound to, and carry out, the same standards of quality, cleanliness, and efficiency that currently exist in our local facilities. Logistically, the long distances between the provider and the hospital would also increase the risks of shortages and improper sanitation. The risk of endangering the safety of patients is significant if this decision by Interior Health prevails. Local jobs would be lost to
Alberta or the Lower Mainland, where the laundry would be trucked back and forth. The bottom line of the contractor is the profit margin. Make no mistake – when their loads of overhead expenses increase year by year, the taxpayer will be left on the hook. Taking into account all of the economic and societal impacts, this move will end up costing far more than it ever would if hospital
laundry was left where it should be – in the hospitals. By keeping this vital operation going in 100 Mile House, the taxes we pay for this service will be returned to our own community and its infrastructure – not into the pockets of contractors. Big business ideology does not often serve well for the majority of the province, namely rural communities such as ours. Non-resourced based, decent paying, long-term
jobs are few and far between, and unnecessarily loosing them to faraway, highly populated regions is a big slap in the face. I respectfully call on local MLA Donna Barnett and Mayor Mitch Campsall to demand that British Columbia Minister of Health Terry Lake cancel plans to outsource jobs away from our community. We must acknowledge primitive instincts
To the editor: Communication is a huge part of community development work: • Building awareness of developing issues; • Promoting community resources; • Advertising workshops for service providers and residents to further develop skills; and • Inviting people to work together towards positive change. When developing a well-rounded communication plan for the South Cariboo, I feel that the 100 Mile House Free Press is an essential and successful element. Whether creating eye-catching advertising, informative articles, or connections to small “pocket” communities via area correspondents, the Free Press continues to generously and effectively partner with community members to “get the message out.” Chris Nickless, Ken Alexander and their team ask questions that draw out pertinent details of the story. Knowing that community services operate
To the editor: Once again millions of Canadians pinned a stylized black-centred, blood-red poppy on their lapel and quietly reflected on the countless sacrifices that have been made in the name of freedom. The words LieutenantColonel John McCrae scribbled down a century ago while he was mired in the insanity of what some called the “war to end all wars,” evoke poignant thoughts about loss, sorrow and regret. “In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row....” American President John F. Kennedy said, “Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.” Our need to band together

on limited budgets they support advertising with relevant stories of interest to draw attention to the issues. They are sensitive and well-informed when it comes to issues that impact people’s lives. Recently, we launched an age-friendly initiative in the South Cariboo. The Free Press stories highlighted the successes and challenges that face our community as we deal with aging demographics. Our community has been recognized for the progress we have made and much of this success is due to the coverage you provided of issues relevant to seniors. On behalf of the South Cariboo Community Planning Council, I would like to say a huge thank-you for your support over the past 25 years. in tribes was originally motivated by self-preservation. For centuries manipulative leaders have appealed to our ego-driven desires to be “special” and “superior” by promoting ethnic discrimination, religious bigotry and cultural hatred. Perhaps, we should start wearing a stylized sunshine-

Remembrance Day Service observation
To the editor: I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the community hall in 100 Mile House on Nov. 11. When we were asked to stand during the singing of O Canada and God Save the Queen, several men in the audience forgot to remove
their ball caps. I think a reminder is needed that men remove their hats while at a ceremony where this occurs. No need to worry about unruly or lack of hair – no one notices Ken Moore 100 Mile House

he fall session of the British Columbia legislature petered out two days early last week, as the ruling B.C. Liberals and the Opposition NDP agreed to turn out the energyefficient lights and head for home. NDP Leader John Horgan skipped the last day and headed to the B.C. Institute of Technology campus in Burnaby. There he announced “PowerBC,” billed as the NDP’s “bold, progressive plan for the future of B.C. energy, with a strong focus on jobs.” Reporters asked, how many jobs? Horgan said retrofitting public buildings and homes for energy efficiency would create jobs all around the province, but he can’t say how many. How much does the plan cost, and does it include subsidizing homeowners to fix their windows and insulation? “The costing will be more apparent when we get closer to the election,” Horgan replied. Whatever the cost, the NDP plan apparently rests on the assumption that the $9-billion Site C dam project on the Peace River can be stopped by an NDP
information donor base. According to the Sierra Club and others, Site C is not renewable energy because the (largely idle) farmland it floods is a “carbon sink.” Forests do store carbon, albeit temporarily, but farmland where the trees have been cleared? This is gluten-free gobbledegook. They also trot out the claim that Site C will be used to power liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations. Most proponents so far have said they will use gas for LNG processing, and if they don’t have hydro available for ancillary power, they will have to burn more gas. BC Hydro has just finished its latest grid upgrade, a second high-voltage transmission line from Merritt to Coquitlam. It adds disaster reliability to the system that brings power from the Peace and Columbia dams to the Lower Mainland. If you’re arguing that hydroelectricity isn’t renewable power, you’ve already lost. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Cow on the loose shot dead by police in Abbotsford ABBOTSFORD - A cow on the loose created havoc along Abbotsford streets on Sunday morning (Nov. 22) and ended with the animal being shot dead by police. The incident began at about 10:15 a.m., when the Abbotsford Police Department began receiving reports of a cow loose in the area of South Parallel and Whatcom roads. Police who were dispatched to the area followed the cow in their vehicles and tried to block it off, but the animal ran on to Highway 1 and headed west in the eastbound lanes. Const. Paul Walker said the cow then crossed the highway, made its way onto DeLair Road and headed toward Sumas Way. The cow then ran along Sumas Way. Officers on foot were able to catch up with the animal just north of South Fraser Way, and they shot it – 30 minutes after the incident began. Walker said the decision to kill the animal was made because of the risk of a driver or pedestrian being injured or killed if they collided with the cow. Walker said police do not carry tranquilizer guns, and conservation officers deal with wild animals, not farm creatures. He said with the animal barreling down a busy traffic corridor, officers had to act quickly and do what they felt was best for public safety. Merritt-Coquitlam power line completed MErriTT - A year behind schedule and $18 million over budget, the latest high-voltage line of the BC Hydro grid has been completed from Merritt to Coquitlam. The new line parallels the existing main line supplying the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island from hydro dams on the Peace and Columbia Rivers. It was originally to be completed in 2014, but the main contractor fell behind and BC Hydro used its own crews to complete one of the most difficult portions, a 19 km stretch north of Hope. The final cost for the 247 km line is expected to be $743 million, which Energy Minister Bill Bennett said is about two per cent more than the initial $725 million budget.

Search pushes the limits
A 35-year-old man spent a cold night outside in a remote area northwest of Clinton after getting caught in a snowstorm on Nov. 24, but luckily he was located safely the next morning. Ten members of South Cariboo Search and
Rescue (SCSAR) were mobilized with ATVs and snowmobiles around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 25 to assist Clinton RCMP in locating the missing hunter who was lost in the Gang Ranch area west of the Fraser River. His companions looked for him through-
out the night and called for assistance in the early morning, says SCSAR search manager James Seeley. “The hunter was welldressed and had snacks and the ability to make fire. They felt he was going to be kind of OK for the night. But you couldn’t let that go too long.” The missing hunter
made it back to camp around 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 25, around the time SCSAR made it out to the site in the secluded and rugged Chilcotin region. It’s a great and happy ending, says Seeley. “If you want to push the limits ... go search out in that area in that weather. I’m so proud of these guys."

Christmas Helper Event It’s time once again for the Royal LePage 100 Mile Realty Christmas helper event. Every year we ask local residents to help out those less fortunate over the holiday season, and every year we are surprised and gladdened by the generous response. In previous years, the public has donated thousands of dollars of food, clothing and toys to our drive. This year, in addition to the usual drop-off spot at our office (next to Tim Horton’s in 100 Mile) we have a new office at the Interlakes Service Centre, where we will be accepting donations as well. So drop off your donations of toys, clothing or non-perishable grocery items at either location and we’ll make sure it helps a deserving family have a better Christmas season.

alarms, so I would like to stress the importance of having working smoke alarms in our homes. “Had it not been for the quick actions from some of the occupants inside, this certainly could have been a tragic outcome. Often people don’t wake up when there is smoke in the house.” He adds one of the residents was woken up by the smoke and fire, banged on the doors and alerted the rest of the residents. Hollander says two of the adult occupants suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to 100 Mile District General Hospital as a precaution and were released that morning. He adds there were 20 firefighters at the scene and Fire-Rescue received mutual aid from the Forest Grove
and 108 Mile Ranch volunteer fire departments. Hollander says the weather, including heavy snow, and the lack of water hydrants caused difficulties for the firefighters as they battled the blaze. He notes the Forest Grove and 108 Mile members shuttled water from Forest Grove and 100 Mile House, as Fire-Rescue members carried out a defensive attack on the building because it was unsafe for an internal attack. Canim-Hendrix Lake Road had to be closed initially because the fire department had to use it for their trucks, equipment and the water ponds, he says, adding “staging” in the yard would be too close to the fire. 100 Mile ESS reaches out to evacuees
Ken Alexander Free Press
Following the blaze in Gateway, which reduced the four-plex they were living in to charred rubble, six adults and a child were visited by 100 Mile Emergency Support Services (ESS) director Liz Jones on Nov. 23. Jones says ESS will supply everyone with housing, clothing and food for 72 hours. ESS members helped people shop items because they didn’t have any way of getting around, she adds. “We are helping people today (Nov. 24) to get their IDs replaced for the ones who can’t do it themselves.”
She notes some don’t have vehicles and others need a little bit more help getting around. Jones says they are looking for a folding walker and a nebulizer (a medication delivery device) – both of which burned up in the fire. “We are looking for rentals to relocate four families and the composition is couples and one person with a child and, possibly, pet friendly.” Anyone who can help out with items can call Liz at 250-706-2720. When the 72-hour ESS support is reached, Jones says they hope evacuees have found somewhere to live. “Otherwise, they are on

These are just commonalities; these are not specific to this case.” Sometimes it’s Red Cross and St. John’s Ambulance also helps in these situations,
she explains. “Most people, we found, are pretty resilient and will find something. Either through our ability to help them or their own initiative, they will move on fairly quickly. Our job is to try to help them through the initial disaster and enable them to get on through their lives the best they can.”

gisele.poliseno@gmail.com
The Watch Lake/ Nor t h Gre en Lake Volunteer Fire Department (WLNGLVFD) Auxiliary hosted the firefighters and guests at the Watch Lake Community Hall (WLCH) on Nov. 14 for the annual appreciation dinner. There was a great turnout for the event, which was catered by Little Horse Lodge. The food was excellent and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks go to the ladies for arranging this special day, all the guests and the auxiliary members for the wrapped presents for our gift table and to one special firefighter who entertained us after dinner while presenting these gifts.
A big thank-you also goes to those who helped set up Saturday morning and cleaned up after dinner. Women’s Institute AGM The Watch Lake & District Women’s Institute (WLDWI) had its annual general meeting on Oct. 28 at the WLCH. Elections were held and the new board of
directors is as follows: Ruth Kachur, president; Karen Forbes, vice president; Joni Guenther, treasurer; Helen Eagle, secretary; Lynda Krupp, director and correspondent. As always, community women are more than welcome to attend the meeting. If you are interested or want more information, contact Ruth at 250-395-1163.
Christmas bake sale The WLDWI will be having a Christmas Bake Sale on Dec. 18 at the Cariboo Mall from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be an assortment of baked goods available. The proceeds from the bake sale will be dedicated to BC Children’s Hospital, so please come out and support their cause.

Storm on the horizon
Gaven Crites Free Press
“It's playoffs already,” says Wranglers coach Dale Hladun, looking ahead to 100 Mile House's upcoming stretch. The local Kootenay International Junior Hockey League club is going head-tohead with the Kamloops Storm in four of their next five games. “This weekend is for first place,” says Hladun, whose second place Wranglers currently trail their Doug Birks Division rivals by three points. The Wranglers host the Storm on Nov. 27; travel to Kamloops on Nov. 28; host the Storm on Dec. 4; travel to Kelowna for a game against the Chiefs on Dec. 5; and meet the Storm again in Kamloops on Dec. 6. “This is the big push. I think this is going to make or break who is going to finish first in our division. These are four-point games: the two points we get and the two points they don't. We've got basically 16 points coming up here in the next two weekends.”

Tomahawks getting sharper
Gaven Crites Free Press
A “hiccup” in the second period cost the Lac la Hache Tomahawks a game against their closest rival in the Central Interior Hockey League on Nov. 20. The 5-3 loss to the Williams Lake Stampeders on the road was one of the best games of the season for the Tomahawks, says coach Byron Louie. “It slipped away a little bit. But from when we took the time out [in the second] to the end of the game, they played a really solid game. It's unfortunate we had that hiccup in the second that cost us. It's all a learning process for myself and the boys.” The Tomahawks are winless so far season, last in the East Division. But if this lineup showed up every night, the local team's record would be better, says their coach. “It's hard to compare game to game when the lineup changes so drastically. We can get smoked one game and the line up changes and we come back and play a fantastic game. If we could play every game with the last lineup we had, I'm sure we'd have a better record.” The teams were scoreless through one period before Williams Lake poured it on in the second, scoring four goals before Wilfred Robbins, from Robin Gilbert and Richard Macdonald, answered back for Lac la Hache on the power play. It was 5-1 for Williams Lake heading into the third, where Gilbert, from Macdonald and Kyle Crump, and Derek Walters, from Alexis Harry and Dervy Johny, scored for Lac la Hache. Willie Sellars made 44 saves for the Tomahawks. The Tomahawks are hosting the Terrace River Kings at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac la Hache on Nov. 28. LIFE WITH PETS
A sight for sore eyes, Baloo’s puppy tail Last month, I told you about Jemma, a puppy we brought back from the Anahim Lake First Nations Reserve about two months ago. Another one of the dogs that made the trip back with us is Baloo. When he was first brought to us in Anahim, several members of the community expressed concern about a possible eye problem and could we look at that as well? As soon as Baloo came in, the issue was immediately apparent. This gorgeous Border Collie mix could barely open his eyes. The eyelids were swollen and he had discharge that had effectively crusted his eyes closed. Despite being functionally blind, he was friendly and seemed to be oblivious to his inability to see most of the world around him. He was significantly underweight and covered in scabs, a clear indication that he had likely been on the losing end of many a dog fight. Upon examination, it was clear that Baloo had been living like for his enCompassionate PET CARE Close to home

tire life. He had been born with congenital condition called entropian. His eyelid openings were small and tight and effectively rolled inward so that every time he blinked, his eyelashes would rub against his eyeballs. It probably would feel like having sand in your eyes--permanently. Surgery for Baloo would require daily medication and careful monitoring for about 10 days post-op. His owner, unable to do this for Baloo, was kind enough to relinquish him to our care for surgery and adoption. Entropian is a fairly common condition in certain breeds of dogs with small eyes and wrinkled faces, such as Chow Chows, Shar Peis and some of the mastiff-type breeds. It is quite uncommon in Border Collies. It can affect one or both eyes and involve either upper or lower eyelids or both. In Baloo’s case, all four of his eyelids were severely inverted, and surgery required removal of the extra tissue so the eyelids would meet properly and so the lashes would no lon-

ger contact the surface of his eyes. Remove too much tissue and the eyes will not close properly and potentially cause another eyelid problem, ectropian, where the lower eyelids droop. This gives the dog a tragic expression (as any Basset hound owner will attest) and can make the dog subject to eye infections from debris that accumulates in the lower lid. It is the closest most of us vets ever get to a Hollywood nip and tuck--although vanity was certainly not the problem here. Baloo’s surgery was quite successful and his personality blossomed once he was able to see and now that he was no longer in pain. During this period, the emotional scars from his ordeal became more apparent. He could be suspicious and fearful of unfamiliar situations and was understandably self-defensive around other dogs. This is when rescue becomes even more of a team effort. Carli Belcher, co-owner of K-9 Pack Pals, volunteered to foster Baloo to socialize him and to address his behavioural concerns. Carli has considerable experience and expertise in this area and Baloo has proven to be a willing pupil. He has made a number of canine friends, learned how to play and interact appropriately and is becoming a confident, happy dog with a bright future.

Brandon Howard, Liam Cumberbirch, Todd Bredo (2), Kolten Carpenter (2), Michael Lynch, Kolby Page, Harris and Nick McCabe made assists. Harris, with three points, won star of the game. Help sought to make Christmas brighter for Clinton residents CLINTON Katie McCullough 250 459-2172
kemccullough@hotmail.com
The community of Clinton and Integris Credit Union staff are working together to brighten spirits at Christmas time. For the fourth year, they are organizing the Stocking Stuffer event. The Integris branch purchases unfilled stockings and community members pick up the stockings and fill them and return them to the Credit Union. On Christmas Eve, they will be delivered to those who need them. The stockings are filled with items that will help make Christmas a little brighter. A list is compiled (with the help of the community) for those that may be less fortunate or alone at Christmas, or could just use a little pick-me-up at Christmas. Some of the recipients are children, some are middle aged and some are seniors. The event has gone over really well. Those receiving the stockings are so grateful for the surprise, and those who fill the stocking genuinely enjoy the fulfillment of being able to give to someone who will really appreciate the gifts. If you would like to participate in the event this year, stop by the Integris to pick up one or more unfilled stockings. For children, the stockings can be filled with items, such as mittens, socks, hats, toys, chocolate or candy. For adults, some ideas of items to fill the stockings included books, gloves, hats, chocolates, toiletries, magazines, or anything else you think would brighten someone’s day. For more information, call 250-459-2301 or 250-459-2173.
Legion news The Clinton Legion is holding a Children’s Christmas Party on Dec. 6 at the community hall from 1 to 3:30 p.m. It is for children 10 years and under and
Santa Claus will be there with gifts. Children must be signed up prior to the event. To register a child, call Val Bissat at 250459-0055 or sign up at the Post Office.

Q: I’m looking for more income with less tax? A: T-Class funds takes advantage of the fact that different
types of income are taxed at different rates. Interest income is taxed at the highest rate, Dividend income and capital gains are taxed at lower rates. T-Class makes monthly payments in the form of return of capital (ROC), which is not taxable. That’s because it represents unrealized capital gains in your investment or the return of your original capital. Who can benefit from T-Class? - Investors looking for a tax efficient source of income outside their RRSP’s and RRIF’s. - Retirees seeking income without triggering Old Age Security claw backs. T class does not increase your taxable income. - Higher-income earners who have maximized their RRSPS - Investors with limited RRSP room – i.e. because of defined benefit pension plans - Investors who want to turn highly taxed interest income into tax-efficient capital gains.
Please read the applicable Fund Fact Sheet before investing. Mutual funds are not guaranteed, their values change frequently and past performance may not be repeated. Mutual fund products are offered through Investia Financial Services Inc.

Q:
I want to purchase my first home, what sort of tips can you give me when creating a new house budget?
A:
I get asked this often. Just because the bank states you qualify for a pre-determined mortgage payment according to their ratios and insurer guidelines, doesn’t mean you can afford the mortgage payment. Don’t base your budget as you would your current rent situation. • Consider your lifestyle, do you like to travel? Do you like to go out for dinner on a regular basis? Do you like to put away money into RSP’s? Lifestyle choices need to seriously factored in. • What are the property taxes and house insurance costs? Taxes can vary depending upon location of the home. Is the home located in town or in a more rural area? Does the home have a fireplace? Is the home located outside the fire district? • Include home maintenance and future home updgrades when you write down your budget. Perhaps the roof may need to be replaced or the kitchen and bathroom will require updating in the next few years. • What will be the transportation costs compared to the costs you are paying now? If the home is located further away from your regular commute, you will have to budget in for additional fuel and vehicle repair costs. • What will the utility payments be? Include the heating and electrical costs. Perhaps the seller can provide you with a 12 month history of utilities if you have already chosen a home to put an offer in on. These are just some costs to consider. Contact me with any questions!

Relocation issues are a regular problem when separated couples have children - so much so that when the new Family Law Act was brought in a couple of years ago, it included specific rules for relocation. These rules only apply if the parties already had a written agreement or court order dealing with parenting arrangements. Under these rules, if a child’s guardian plans to relocate, with or without the child, at least 60 days written notice must be given to the other guardian or guardians. If the other guardian or guardians objects to the move, then they have 30 days after receiving the notice to file an application with the court for an order prohibiting the relocation. When the court considers the relocation application, it must ask itself whether the relocating guardian proposes “reasonable and workable arrangements to preserve the relationship between the child and the child’s other guardians, persons who are entitled to contact with the child, and other persons who have a significant role in the child’s life.” (s. 69(4)(a), Family Law Act) If the court finds that such arrangements have been made, then it must conclude that the relocation is “in the best interests of the child unless another guardian satisfies the court otherwise.” This part of the family law legislation seems like a step in the right direction in dealing with a problem which has bothered the courts for many years. Naturally enough, relocation is permitted - but there are clear criteria which must be considered. As is always the case in family law matters, the best interests of the child are paramount.

He maintains a refinery can’t be built in Alberta itself because of opposition from multinational oil firms that own Texas refineries, and because the large prefabricated modules that can be assembled on the B.C. coast can’t be hauled inland. His proposal would use an unusual technology – adding $5 billion to the costs – that slashes the carbon emissions to
less than one-third of a conventional refinery. Black argues the “greenest refinery in the world” would largely offset the higher emissions of oil sands bitumen and forge a political solution for Canada’s energy policy makers. “It cleans the whole industry up. Obituaries PERREY
Veda Mae March 5, 1935 – Nov. 15, 2015
It is with deepest sadness that the family of Veda Mae Perrey share the news of her passing on Nov. 15, 2015 after a brief illness. Veda Best was born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, the youngest of six siblings and moved with her family to Vancouver, B.C. at age three. After graduating, Veda worked for the Vancouver Sun. She later moved to 100 Mile House and worked as a telephone operator. Veda met Art Perrey at a dance in Lac la Hache and the couple married in 1955. Twin daughters, Barbara and Deborah, were born in 1956 followed by Susan in 1959. Art and Veda established the first Chevron station and bulk fuel delivery in 100 Mile House, later building a small drive-in restaurant next door (Tastee Freeze). They constructed a large rainbow sign with map of the area that was very successful in attracting tourists traveling through 100 Mile House to their gas station and drivein. They went on to develop other commercial buildings in the town and moved from town to a ranch (Skady ranch) at Horse Lake. Veda, a city girl at heart, took some time to embrace farm life with the usual enthusiasm she showed for new adventures. She quickly evolved into an unwavering support to her daughters with 4-H, Outriders club, and many school and community sports and activities. When Art took up flying, Veda signed up for flying lessons in hope of overcoming her “white knuckle” fear of small planes. She excelled as a passenger in large jets. Veda loved her work as a travel agent and enjoyed extraordinary journeys around the world. In 1979 Art and Veda retired to Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. Perhaps “retirement” is not the appropriate term as Art built a commercial fishing boat in the back yard and they commercial fished for three years. Veda loved sports and participated in fast-ball, curling, yoga, and golf. Veda’s passion for golf and bridge brought many wonderful, enduring friendships. Veda loved meeting new people and no matter where she went, would become immersed in conversations within minutes of being in the company of others. Veda was predeceased by all of her siblings and was heart-broken following the loss of her daughter, Debbie in 1999. Veda will be forever loved and missed by her husband of sixty-one years, Art, her daughters Barbara and Susan and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In accordance with Veda’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Family and close friends will come together in early summer to spread her ashes at sea and celebrate Veda’s life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice. Condolences maybe offered at www.telfordsladysmith.com Telford’s of Ladysmith - 250-245-5553

Breakfast with Santa Dec. 5
There will be a Breakfast With Santa in the Valley Room (behind the Red Coach Inn) on Dec. 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. – doors open at 8:30 a.m. Organizer Val Streber says it is a free event for children in the area and it’s open for youngsters 12 years and under and their adult(s). “We’ll be serving pancakes and sausages and juice boxes, and coffee and tea for the parents. Kid’s are invited to bring their adult with them, and they can visit with Santa and tell him what they want for Christmas.” Streber says parents are invited to bring their own cameras or phones to take photographs, so they don’t have to pay for their children’s photos with Santa. Noting there are free events like this one in the areas around 100 Mile House but not here,
Streber says she decided to put one on locally. “I’m a grandma and I like to see kids happy, so I decided to put on an event. I used to volunteer a lot years ago, but this is just a grandma putting on a breakfast
with Santa for the kids.” She adds there have been a lot of donations – in kind or money – from local businesses and organizations to help out with the event. A volunteer crew has stepped up to cook and serve at the
breakfast, Streber says, adding a couple of Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School students volunteer and will likely end up being elves. “I’m hoping to have a sing-along, and Santa will be singing, too.”

Planning Council welcomes new executive co-ordinator
Barbara Roden Free Press
Marna Forsyth, the new executive coordinator of the South Cariboo Community Planning Council (SCCPC), knows she has some big shoes to fill. “I have a huge respect for [retired executive co-ordinator] Lea Smirfitt,” says Forsyth. “We’ll still be working together on the [South Cariboo Age-Friendly Initiative, which is great. It’s going to be a steep learning curve, so I’ll be picking Lea’s brain for some time.” Forsyth, who worked for the 100 Mile House and District Women’s Centre, took over the position at the end of September, and says that when it became available she didn’t hesitate in applying. “I’d worked with the SCCPC previously, and community sustainability is something I’m passionate about, so when the position came up I said ‘yes’.” Forsyth says the SCCPC uses three tools to get its message into the area. “Community tables are good for identifying trends, and our newsletter, Well on the Way, is very well-known. And our e-mail broadcasts allow us to send information about events and about what different organizations are doing.”

which appears as frost on the window.
Whether inside or outside the home, air contains water in the form of a gas, referred to as water vapor. Under certain conditions, water vapor reverts back to its liquid state before freezing, which shows up as frost on the inside of the home’s windows.
The windows themselves may be a cause of water vapor that turns to frost. Single-paned windows with aluminum frames aren’t effective at blocking out cold air. Even if moisture levels in the house are low, an icy single-paned window will often cause condensation and frost. Wood-framed, double-paned windows are more energy efficient because the inside pane is relatively warmer than the outside pane.
In winter, the home’s air temperature is much warmer than that of the outdoors. But window glass is typically much colder than the temperature of the air inside the home. A cold window is often all that’s needed to turn water in its gaseous state - vapor - back into its liquid state. The result is condensation, or water droplets that form on the inside of the window in much the same way as a glass of ice water sweats on a hot, humid summer day. When outside temperatures plummet further, bringing the temperature of the window pane down with them, the condensation turns to ice,

External Moisture Sources Most homes have some air flow from the outside into the home’s interior. That air is often laden with moisture that can get trapped inside the house. Vapor barriers in crawl spaces and insulated floors help minimize the problem.

Internal Moisture Sources Moisture is the other cause of condensation and frost on windows. If the humidity levels inside the home are too high, even energy efficient windows will collect moisture. Run bathroom and kitchen fans that vent outdoors.

Why is there frost on the inside of my home windows?
Water that freezes on a window indicates problems inside the house.
