Church group to sponsor Syrian refugee family FOR THE TOWNSMAN

A Syrian refugee family could be coming to Cranbrook thanks to the efforts of a newly-formed group called the Cranbrook Hub for Refugees (CHR), a constituent group of Christ Church Anglican, the

oldest church in Cranbrook. The eight-member group, which formed in late October, has completed an Expression of Interest application, the first step in the process for sponsoring a refugee family from Syria or

elsewhere in the wartorn Middle East. The federal Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship hopes to bring 10,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year and 15,000 more by the end of February 2016.

Government regulations require refugee sponsoring groups to raise $15,000 before they will be considered for sponsorship. The Anglican Diocese of Kootenay has sponsored refugees before and is now planning a

major fund-raising campaign that will kick off soon. CHR chairman Gerry Warner says the campaign will go into high gear after Christmas although it’s accepting donations now. “With Christmas fast ap-

proaching, people’s financial resources are already being stretched so we won’t do a major fund-raiser until January. But if someone wants to make a donation to us, or as a gift to someone else, we’ll certainly accept it and issue a tax receipt.” The first refugees are expected to arrive in Canada within days, but are going mainly to military barracks in large cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton for relocation. As a result, Warner cautions this is only the beginning of what could be a

long process. “At this point we have no idea when we could expect to have a family in Cranbrook. But the important thing now is we’re doing everything we can to ensure that an immigrant family will feel welcome, safe and secure when they do arrive.” Warner said CHR has been holding planning meetings weekly to prepare for the refugees’ arrival and has reached out to other Cranbrook churches interested in sponsoring refugees.

Each year, the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) partners with the Salvation Army and Sunrise Rotary to present A Book under Every Tree. The goal is to collect enough new and used books from now until Dec. 17 to provide at least one book for every child whose family will be receiving a Christmas hamper from the Salvation Army or a gift through the Angel Tree project. Adults will also have an opportunity to choose a book when they collect hampers. Books can be dropped off at the Cranbrook Public Library, Lotus Books, East Kootenay Community Credit Union (Cranbrook branch), Christ Church Anglican and the CBAL office. Avalanches possible this time of year C AROLYN GR ANT

This early in the year, it is difficult for forecasters at Avalanche Canada to post exact avalanche danger ratings, but that doesn’t mean the danger isn’t there. The problem is that the winter backcountry recreation season has just begun

and there are not enough snowpack observations collected as yet. However, according to avalanche.ca it may be early in the season, but there is more than enough snow for avalanches. Avalanche Canada has launched the Mountain Infor-

mation Network, so that you can submit your observations on snow conditions through your smartphone. If you can take the time to dig a snow pit and observe, all the better. All this information assists in forecasting avalanche danger.

But while there are not ratings posted yet, there are some observations and forecasts. For those of you who intend to get out in the backcountry this weekend, here are the first forecasts from avalanche.ca.

After raising the issue of outsourcing hospital laundry services, Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt is encouraged by a recent statement from the incoming new CEO of Interior Health. Pratt has raised the issue at Regional District of East Kootenay board meetings over the last few months, concerned about the loss of jobs from Interior Health’s plan to outsource the laundry contract to the Lower Mainland. However, incoming Interior Health CEO Chris Mazurkewich released a statement on Wednesday noting that he would like to review the decision. “I plan to take additional time in reviewing the future of our laundry services,” Mazurkewich said in a press release. “Subsequently, a decision on the possibility of outsourcing the

service will not occur until at least March 2016 when recommendations are presented to the IH Board of Directors for its consideration. “This process has taken, unfortunately, longer than anyone anticipated, and I want to take the time to understand all of the complexities around this significant issue. I know that this may be frustrating to many of those who are anticipating a decision soon, and I appreciate the impact on our staff for the length of this process.” Currently, most of the laundry services are out of Nelson in the West Kootenay, however, Interior Health recently noted that there needs to be significant capital upgrades to the equipment, which is why the contract was tendered out.

long hike in the majestic wilds of British Columbia, an iconic weekend of Canadian football or perhaps just a warm cup of tea? Thanks to Mother Nature, English nobility, British Commonwealth politics and a pigskin, they all tie together here in the East Kootenay. Albert Henry George Grey, 4th Earl Grey, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, PC (codename: Mr. Alphabet) and the ninth Governor-General of Canada from 19051911, provides us with the English nobility. Albert Grey was the son of General Sir Charles Grey, himself the son of British Prime Minister Charles Grey. Actually that gives us both the English nobility and the warm cup of tea as it is generally assumed that Earl Grey tea is named for prime minister Grey, although there is some discussion on this point among tea historians. For that matter, there is some discussion amongst regular historians as to the purpose of tea historians, often over a cup of coffee, but that’s neither here nor there. The Grey family claims that the tea, in order to suit Lord Grey’s estate in Northumberland, was specially blended by a Chinese mandarin by adding the herb bergamot to offset the quantities of lime in the local water. It is said that Lady Grey featured the beverage at her many political soirees and it proved so popular that Twinnings Tea marketed it as “Lady Grey.” “Earl Grey” is not a registered trademark, mind you, and numerous companies produce their own versions. Earl Grey of both the Kootenays and every-

He entered politics as a Liberal in 1880, took a seat in the House of Lords in 1894, and spent time with Cecil Rhodes (of Rhodes scholarship fame). On June 16, 1905, upon the recommendation of King Edward VII and Canadian Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, he became the ninth Governor-General of Canada, replacing his brother-in-law, the Earl of Minto. One of his first acts was to give royal assent allowing Alberta and Saskatchewan to join Canadian confederation. He was a reasonably acceptable governor-general during a time of increasing Canadian industrialism, economic development, immigration and independence from Mother England. He helped to create the

spent time in the Kootenays wandering about shooting things. Grey donated trophies to Canadian

music and dance and horse shows and figure skating and, most notably (and here’s where the pigskin comes in)

he commissioned the Grey Cup trophy of football in 1909. On the evening of September 4, 1906, a CPR train carrying Governor-General Earl Grey, his wife, two children and assorted other dignitaries pulled up to the Cranbrook CPR station where they were met by a local throng. As the first governor-general ever to visit the young city it was a pretty big deal; speeches, large crowds, three cheers, the whole nine yards. Grey, an avid outdoorsman himself, was obviously taken with the East Kootenay. He came through again with a party of 15 in October, 1908. This time, however, he arrived after traveling the majestic wilds by horse and by foot through the divide of the Purcell mountain range separating the East and West Kootenays (from Argenta to Windermere) and from there to Cranbrook in V. Hyde Baker’s automobile — V. Hyde Baker, being the son of town founder James Baker and the closest thing to landed gentry in the area. The Kootenay Lake to Columbia Lake path through the mountains was a trail used by the First Nations for centuries but they had neglected to name it after

an Englishmen so it thus became known as Earl Grey Pass. It must be noted that the other nearby pass from the East to West Kootenay, that is to say, Gray Creek Pass, although also an old trail, bears no relation to Earl Grey. Gray Creek Pass was named for its trailhead vicinity to Gray Creek in the West Kootenay, which was apparently named for someone named Gray, although no-one really knows who. If it was English nobility we would undoubtedly know all about it. The Earl Grey Pass extends for about 63 kilometres (40 miles) from Argenta at the northern end of Kootenay Lake, up Hamill Creek, over the Purcell Crest and down Toby Creek to Invermere. It is generally a five or six day hike under rigorous conditions for the experienced and wellequipped only. Gray Creek Pass, on the other hand, which officially opened to vehicle traffic in 1990, can be driven during the summer months in regular vehicles depending upon which provincial government is maintaining or not maintaining the road. Earl Grey liked the East Kootenays so much so that, in 1908, he purchased the Thunder Hill ranch near Canal Flats from W.S. Santo. Mr. Santo later moved to Cranbrook and served as an alderman. So there we have it, the majestic wilds hike, an iconic football competition and a cup of tea, and so we say to you Earl Grey, who, by the way, died in England in August, 1917, “Nice pass.” Endnote: In truth, footballs are not now, nor were they ever, made out of pigskin. Over the years they have been constructed from cowhide, rubber placed over, at times, a pig’s bladder.

On December 11 nearly 20 influential community leaders and Cranbrook business owners will strip down to their Christmas undies and brave the cold to raise $20,000 in support of the Salvation Army’s efforts to build a 24/7 shelter in Cranbrook for homeless men, women, and families throughout the East Kootenay. In order to keep the icicles from forming on their bodies, the participants will need to donate money every half hour to gain access to entertaining “warm-up” activities, sponsored by a local business. Meanwhile, donations will be collected from the public to meet an hourly fundraising goal, which if achieved, will keep the participants exposed to the elements and donating another additional hour. The event, Miracle on Baker Street, takes place noon to 4 p.m. on Baker Street in front of the Bedroom Furniture Galleries, downtown Cranbrook. City sticking with poverty reduction initiative Arne Petryshen

The City of Cranbrook will stay on with the Community Poverty Reduction Strategies Initiative. City staff recommended that council direct them to respond to the request and indicate that the city wishes to continue being part of the initiative on the basis that the city has no direct funding obligations. Coun. Ron Popoff is

one of the liaisons from council to the Poverty reduction group, as well as the social planning and others. “Those groups are seeming to be merging a lot more and getting a lot closer in their discussions and planning and outcomes,” he said. “I think it would be very positive for the city continuing the mayor’s support as is mentioned here.” Coun. Tom Shypitka

asked if there was any concern that the UBCM is planning to bail from the program, as well as the City of Prince George leaving the initiative. Popoff said the UBCM work was completed already. “Now this is the phase two — to turn it back to he community,” Popoff said. “Now that the work of phase one is complete and we know what those outcomes

and recommendations are, it’s now back to the community to start working on those. So it’s just the natural transition.” The recommendation was in response to a letter from Sept. 10, asking if the City of Cranbrook wishes to continue to be part of the Community Poverty Reduction Strategies Initiative. The letter was from Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of

Children and Family Development and AI Richmond, chair of the UBCM Healthy Communities Committee, The initiative began in May 2012 as a joint partnership between the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and the Ministry of Children and Family Development. The report noted that it is “premised on the understanding that no one party can effectively ad-

congregation were jolted into action by the picture of three-year-old toddler Aylan Kurdi, whose lifeless body washed up on a Turkish beach Sept. 2 after the refugee boat he was in with his family capsized while crossing the Mediterranean. “Like many around the world, we were hor-

rified by that picture.” Meanwhile Warner says there’s little CHR can do now until its application is approved by Ottawa. But once it’s approved, CHR will be looking for volunteers to help provide housing, furniture, clothing and emotional support for the refugee family. Schooling and ESL les-

sons will also have to be arranged. The group’s next meeting is Jan. 6 at which time it hopes to have its application approved by Ottawa and intensive preparations can begin for the arrival of the refugee family. “We also plan on having a public meeting in January for anyone inter-

ested in helping us in this sorely-needed effort to help these brave families driven from their homes and facing dangers unimaginable to us,” Warner says. Anyone seeking more information on CHR can contact Gerry Warner at (250) 489-3271 or Bonnie Spence-Vinge at (250) 426-4274.

Pratt raised the issue at the annual Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention in September when meeting with government officials, but didn’t think much of an impression was made. “I felt when I came back from UBCM, I met with the existing CEO of IHA and I didn’t think that went anywhere,” Pratt said. “Then I met with the Minister of Health after that and I thought it was basically kind of the same thing.” However, Mazurkewich’s statement is a sign that maybe IHA is reconsidering their decision, added Pratt. “I’m encouraged that they’re going to look at a review on it and what I would like to

see is them re-tender it and with the re-tendering, give local people—I don’t just mean in Cranbrook—but local people in IHA’s area, a chance to bid on it,” Pratt said. In order to bid on the contract, a service provider must have a line of credit of $15 million, which is a pretty steep financial commitment, said Pratt, who raised the point in August at a KERHB meeting. Keeping the laundry service local also prevents any transportation issues that may arise if the highways— especially in the mountain passes—are shut down because of adverse weather conditions or traffic accidents.

Cancer Society fundraising for patient lodging For the Townsman

After enjoying the sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, The Canadian Cancer Society is campaigning to raise money through a new initiative called Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a movement for everyone

who wants to give something back — either financially or with a donation of their time. Specifically, the CCS, through the ‘Take a One Night Stand Against Cancer’ campaign, is fundraising for a program that helps cancer patients who need a place to stay

while receiving treatment in Cranbrook. Through the Southern Interior Rotary Lodge, the Canadian Cancer Society helps alleviate the financial burden of a cancer diagnosis. With support from local residents and businesses, the lodge pro-

vides affordable accommodations for people with cancer and their caregivers. Through the support of generous donors, the CCS is able to subsidize these costs, offering this service to guests at only $53 per night. For those qualifying clients, the fee

is covered through a financial support program. With the community’s generous support of the Take A One Night Stand Against Cancer campaign, donations will go towards the financial support program to help cover these costs for those in need.
In the one year period of October 31 2014 to October 31 2015, residents from the East Kootenay have benefited from 1,991 nights stayed at the lodge. Cranbrook residents alone account for 716 of these nights. The average stay of the Lodge is about 6 nights, but some patients stay anywhere from three to six weeks, which is a long time to be away from home. “I will always remember the endless patience and selfless service of the volunteers at the front desk, the thoughtfulness and compassion of the nurses, the great people in the kitchen, everyone connected to the Lodge” said David, a patient from Osoyoos. “I spoke to many residents at the lodge during my

The South Star Trail Recreation Site continues to be a popular 4 season area for hiking, biking, horseback riding and (snow conditions permitting) cross country skiing. Managed in partnership with Recreation Sites and Trails BC, the area provides a trail system which is maintained and improved by volunteer members of the South Star Recreation Society. This year we have been able to remove large amounts of dead pine, replace a bridge, and improve drainage to prevent trail damage in the spring runoff. Trail grooming for skiing covers about 60% of the trails. We are able to track set many trails, while others are graded only. A loop has been designated for those who wish to ski with dogs (we request that dogs not be taken on track set trails) and the Kinnikvnnick snowshoe trail is also dog friendly. As mentioned above, all of the work is done by volunteers. Expenses are covered by donations, memberships in the society, and some grant money for specific projects. Occasional trail users may deposit a townie in the box at the trailhead. Memberships in the Society are available by filling out a form from the wooden box at the trailhead, and a brochure with a map and important information is also available there. We appreciate the support of about 75 families and individuals.

The South Star Recreation Society is having its AGM on Wed., Dec 2, 2015 in room 205 at the College of the Rockies at 7:30 PM. Anyone is welcome, however only members may vote for resolutions and in elections for the Board of Directors. We have vacancies available on the Board if you are interested in becoming involved. We hope that this winter will bring better ski conditions than last year!! Hope springs eternal in the hearts and minds of skiers and snowshoers. We wish to bring to the attention of all winter users a problem which we have had with parking over the last several years. On most days there is ample room for parking on 38th Avenue, however on weekends and holidays when the snow is good, vehicles spill out onto 53rd St. and park on both sides of the road. This narrows the roadway to the point where a single car or pickup can barely get through. Valid concerns have been raised by residents that if an emergency vehicle such as an ambulance or fire truck were needed it would be blocked by parked cars. For this reason, please park on the north side of 53rd St only. There is a section of 53rd St. west of 38th avenue which will accommodate vehicles on the shoulder, and I am told that Main Road will plough this area during the winter. If vehicles are on one side of the road it should eliminate the problem.

Skating rinks for the masses: Cheers, for the plummetting temperatures and the advent of winter. City of Cranbrook crews were out in Baker Park Thursday flooding Cranbrook’s downtown outdoor skating rink, also a major draw.

Avalanches possible this time of year Continued from page 1 For the South Rockies:

Snowpack observations have been very limited as the season commences. Initial reports suggest that there is enough snow above around 1700m for avalanches to occur. Around 10cm of new snow sits on a thick rain crust which exists to at least treeline elevation. In exposed terrain at higher elevations, new winds slabs are expected to have formed and may linger for a few days until temperatures warm up. The stiff underlying crust may increase the likelihood of triggering a wind slab avalanche. The cold and dry Arctic air persists on Thursday. Freezing levels should stay well below valley bottom and alpine winds should be light from NE. On Friday afternoon, a layer of warm air aloft should reach the region. Above freezing temperatures should develop around 2000m while the valleys remain cold. Valley fog may develop on Friday and should definitely be established by Saturday. Dry, sunny, and warm con-

ditions are expected to persist at higher elevations at least through the weekend.

For the Purcells:

One operator produced a size 2 avalanche with explosives on a N slope at 2300m. There have also been reports of skier controlled size 1’s, 15 to 20cm storm slabs failing on the Nov 23rd surface hoar

Snowpack Summary

Monday’s storm snow fell on a variety of old surfaces including crust, surface hoar and old settled snow. Arctic air moving into the region has resulted in northerly winds which have formed small wind slabs on south facing features near ridge top. Warm temps and strong solar input formed a crust on south facing features which can be found underneath Monday’s storm snow. There are at least three surface hoar layers in the snowpack buried on: Nov. 5th, Nov. 11th and Nov. 23rd. The first two have been largely unreactive. Facets may exist just above the ground on shaded slopes in the alpine.

Warming temperatures in the alpine for later in the week may significantly change the alpine hazard.

For Kootenay Boundary:

On Wednesday, ski cutting and explosives triggered several wind slab avalanches up to size 1.5. The avalanches are sliding on a firm rain crust from mid-November. Slabs were typically 5-15cm thick and were reported on a variety of aspects. These types of wind slabs may persist for a few days until temperatures warm up at higher elevations.

Terrorism: A Relatively Minor Issue

B

y sheer coincidence, a book I wrote called “Don’t Panic: Islamic State, Terrorism and Today’s Middle East” was published just before the terrorist attacks in Paris. So naturally everybody interviewing me about the book asked me if it is time to panic now. They couldn’t resist it. And of course I replied no, it is not time to panic. If a train derailed in the Paris Metro, killing 130 people and injuring over 300, the story would dominate the news in France for around 24 hours, 48 hours tops. In other countries it would definitely be only a oneday story: just one more transport accident, in a world where trains collide, planes crash and ships sink from time to time. But if it’s not an accident — if human beings deliberately caused those deaths — then the media feeding frenzy starts. The story is twenty times as big, and it can dominate the news schedules for a week. Most people in Europe, North America and the Middle East have watched at least several hours of coverage of the Paris events and their aftermath — as long as a feature film — and even in more distant parts of the world it has been the event of the week. There is nothing puzzling about this phenomenon. It’s perfectly natural for people to be more interested in murder than in mere mechanical malfunctions. But the sheer volume of the coverage makes a terrorist attack feel like a much bigger event than it actually is. Even if you live a very long way from where the real action is. If you live in Syria, the threat isn’t just terrorism. Islamic State is already a major

threat to the many Syrians it hates (Shias, Christians, Druze, and even Sunni Muslims who have worked for the government or fought in the army). If IS gained control of the whole country, the number of Syrian refugees would double or triple. If you live in Iraq, you are much less at risk, for Islamic State has little hope of expanding into the Shia-dominated parts of Gwynne the country still under Baghdad’s control, or into Dyer the areas under Kurdish control. If you live in Turkey or other Arab countries — indeed, in any other Muslim country — you may face a serious threat from home-grown extremists, but all they get from IS is encouragement and maybe a bit of training. It’s really a domestic problem. If you live in France or the United States or China, your only worry is the occasional terrorist attack that may have been encouraged by Islamic State — but the people who carry it out are mostly locals. You deal with that sort of thing just the way you dealt with other terrorist threats in the past: border controls, enhanced security measures at public events, and good intelligence. If Western air forces want to bomb Islamic State too, by all means do so, but they will be all alone in that job. The Arab states that are allegedly part of President Obama’s “coalition” have all withdrawn their air forces and are bombing Yemen instead. And the Turks are almost exclusively bombing the Kurds (including the Kurds fighting Islamic State), except when they shoot down a Russian plane. The Russian and “coalition” (mostly American) bombs falling on Islamic State

have stopped its expansion, at least for the moment, and the recent air attacks on the tanker-trucks that carry the black-market oil out have certainly cut into its income, but it is not about to fall. As for “boots on the ground”, forget it. The only people fighting Islamic State on the ground are the Kurds and what’s left of the Syrian army after four years of war. The Syrian army was on the brink of collapse last summer before the Russian bombing campaign saved it, and it still lacks the strength to recapture much territory. Islamic State is going to be around for a while. Stopping Western air attacks on Islamic State might save some Western cities from terrorist attacks, but even that is not guaranteed. Islamic State is competing with al-Qaeda for support in the Muslim and especially the Arab world, and spectacular acts of terrorism are good recruiting tools. Islamic State also thinks it is following a divinely ordained script, which makes it relatively impervious to normal calculations of strategic advantage. Does this mean terrorist attacks inspired by Islamic State will continue for months or years no matter what the West does? Probably. Within living memory Western countries have fought real wars that killed millions of their citizens, and they didn’t buckle under the strain. The scale of the threat they face now is so much smaller that it is ridiculous to call it a war at all, and yet they flap about like frightened poultry. If terrorist attacks on the scale of Paris are the greatest threat facing the West, then these are very fortunate countries. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.

Rohr says again that “there are other times when we need to go ahead and act on our own best intuitions and presume that God is guiding us and will guide us.” One thing I am learning in this time of waiting in my life is that I’m not sure what kind of waiting it is. I can’t characterize it. I have a sense of what the ending is, but I don’t know how I will get there. It’s a process, and even the process is beyond my control. Another thing I am learning is that we hardly ever wait in isolation. I am sharing this time with other people. Some of those other people are waiting in their own situations. Others are willing to sit with me while I wait. There is a union in this kind of waiting. More deeply, there is a communion in which we are drawn closer to one another and to the God for whom we wait. In such waiting together, true community is born. I suspect that our Advent waiting is such a time. We want to rush quickly to the end of Advent, to its consummation in Christmas. We want to hurry to the manger. But I am learning we cannot rush that ending. The waiting, while it can be difficult, invites us to lose ourselves, to empty ourselves, to yield ourselves to the one who bids us follow. Our lives are being immeasurably enriched in the waiting time, the fallow time. May your Advent waiting be a time of yearning and anticipation for you. School Christmas sale to help Nepal Submi t ted

Nepal has not had a good time recently. First the disasters on Mt. Everest, then last October’s deadly snow storm in the Annapurna and Mustang areas of Nepal, and finally the crippling earthquakes that hit in April of this year. When news of the earthquake hit, many people in Cranbrook and surrounding areas moved quickly to help. Donations flowed in quickly and generously. A total of $23,292.80 was sent to Nepal in July. Of this amount, $6,000 was sent by Gordon Terrace School. In 2011, Gordon Terrace School came on board with the group The Canadian Friends of Nepal, started in 2008 by David and Patricia Stock. Gordon Terrance has over the last four years raised $28,000. They have built a separate “Hot Pink” school for three- to fiveyear-old children in the village of Kuttal, 32 kilometres from Kathmandu and a 45 minute walk down a dirt path from the city of Duhlikhel. Little children from the village and surrounding area come here daily. The Canadian Friends of Nepal hold twice-yearly fundraisers in June and December and have had many DVD presentations at the College of the Rockies to augment the funds raised. Short-handed Ice overpowered by Hurricanes Lethbridge Hurricanes cruise to resounding win over battered Kootenay Ice

Taylor Rocc a

Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce struggled to find words Thursday night. And who could blame him? There are only so many answers for a coach tasked with trotting out a short-handed lineup night in and night out in the ultra-competitive Western Hockey League. On the backend of two games in two nights, Pierce’s Ice (6-18-2-0) looked exhausted and the host Lethbridge Hurricanes (15-9-0-0) made sure to get two points out of it, cruising to a 9-0 victory at the Enmax Centre. “There’s not a lot [to say] other than we’re not going to stop trying,” Pierce said over the phone Thursday. “I’m not going to stop coaching. Our players can’t stop playing. I don’t think we emptied our tanks. Yeah, we looked tired, but I think there’s still more there to give. “You have to recognize [the injury situation]. Fatigue plays a factor. We played a good team [Wednesday] and we made the game a lot harder than it’s supposed to be. Same thing [Thursday] -- we made the game harder at times than it had to be. “When you’re as outnumbered as we are and with the types of players we’re missing, you have to really be smart. We made it too much of a challenge.”

The ‘Canes made collecting two points look like less than a challenge Thursday as nine different goal scorers found the back of the net. Left wing Barrett Sheen opened the scoring in the first period before a four-goal outburst in the second put the game out of reach for the visitors as the Hurricanes took a 5-0 advantage to the dressing room through 40 minutes. Insult was added to injury in the third period as the hosts tallied four more goals while keeping the Ice from registering so much as a single shot on goal. By the time the final buzzer sounded, half of the Hurricanes skaters each tallied a goal, while only three were left without a single point. In order, the nine goal scorers that followed Sheen were Brayden Burke, Giorgio Estephan, Justin Gutierrez, Tyler Wong, Cory Millette, Arvin Atwal, Carter Folk and Brett Davis. Thursday, the victim of the onslaught was rookie goaltender Declan Hobbs, who faced 48 shots as he remained between the pipes for the full 60 minutes. “It was 100 per cent my call [to leave Hobbs in the net],” Pierce said. “Looking back on it, it was probably the wrong decision. “I want to protect Declan same as you hope to protect some of your other young players. I spoke with Declan after

the second period -- he’s a competitor -- you can tell he wants to stay in the game. I just told him, ‘You’re going to have to battle through this.’ It’s a character test no different than it is for any of our other young guys. “I’m not concerned about Declan. He’s such a strong-willed kid. He knows that nothing that went on [Thursday] is his fault.” Wednesday night against the division-leading Red Deer Rebels, the Ice went forth with only 10 forwards, one of which was affiliate player Connor Barley. Thursday proved no different. Pierce maintains injuries are no excuse. But they can’t be overlooked when analyzing the outcome. “We don’t want to use it as an excuse, but you’ve got young guys -first-year players -- that you’re trying to develop and protect,” Pierce said. “They’re out there playing against some of the best players in our league right now. It’s not easy for them. You try and do your best to encourage them and stay positive, but you just hope they come out on the other side unscathed.” “We’ll see their responses as we go along here. If they can keep their chins up and keep showing up to work and keep trying to get better -- great. Down the road is going to come and they’ll be able to look back on it and say this

Get ready for winter

ond game of a homeand-home. “You wake up tomorrow and the sun comes back up,” Pierce said. “You figure out how you’re going to get through the day. “We have to continue to coach, find ways to be better, simplify our game and help our players. We can’t keep feeding them to the wolves. We have to give them some different looks that are going to help them be more successful.” Puck drop between the Hurricanes and Ice is slated for 7 p.m. on College Night at Western Financial Place.

Wild boys soccer battle provincial competition in Burnaby Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Mount Baker Secondary School Wild boys soccer team is battling it out at the 2015 B.C. Secondary Schools ‘AAA’ Boys Soccer Championships in Burnaby. Opening the provincial tournament Thursday morning, the Wild battled Kelowna Secondary School in a tightly-contested 1-1 draw. Thursday afternoon, the Wild ran into stiffer competition in the form of Panorama Ridge Secondary School (Surrey). Panorama Ridge cruised to a 4-0 victory in afternoon action,

Argyle Secondary is in first place in Pool ‘A’ heading into the final day of round-robin action, having collected victories over Panorama Ridge (4-1) and Kelowna (4-0). A total of 16 teams are in competition at the 2015 B.C. Secondary Schools ‘AAA’ Boys Soccer Championships, spread across four pools of four teams each. Elimination play begins Friday afternoon at 1:45 p.m. (Mountain) with all 16 teams qualifying. Competition wraps up Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Mountain).

sition of Wesley, Chynoweth said he was still in search of more help and understandably so with forwards Luke Philp (ankle), Jaedon Descheneau (shoulder), Shane Allan (fourgame suspension), Zak Zborosky (lower body) and River Beattie (head) all unavailable for Thursday’s tilt in Lethbridge. “We’re looking at every option available to us,” Chynoweth said prior to arriving in Lethbridge. “We don’t want to pay too much because we’re trying to recoup some draft picks.

As of Thursday night, the Eagles rank as the worst team in the BCHL with a record of 5-21-0-0. The 6-foot, 197pound Wesley landed with the Eagles on Sept. 21 after being re-assigned to the BCHL from the WHL’s Hurricanes. During the 2014-15 season, Wesley spent 31 games with the Hurricanes, tallying five goals and 10 points. With Wesley opting not to report to Cranbrook, the Ice remain short-handed heading into the weekend. After the initial acqui-

Jerry Bancks Head Coach Kimberley Dynamiters nothing to turn your nose up at, but expectations are high in Kimberley and Bancks had a very clear idea what his team needed to work on in practice leading up to this weekend’s tilts with the Rockies (Friday) and Spokane Braves (Saturday). “We’re going to work really hard on our fitness,” Bancks said. “We’ve given up some late goals… To me, that’s mental fatigue and mental fatigue is from body fatigue. We’ve got to make sure we fix that. I don’t want anybody to be able to outwork us.” After visiting the Rockies, the Dynamiters return home for a Saturday night contest with the Spokane Braves (4-19-0-4).

We’ve got to be careful about that. “We’re looking at players, not only in our league and on other team’s lists, but also players that are playing Junior ‘A’.” Wednesday, the Ice faced the Red Deer Rebels short two skaters as they dressed nine regular forwards with defenceman Bryan Allbee serving as a makeshift 10th man up front. Following Thursday’s game in Lethbridge, the Ice host the Hurricanes Saturday (7 p.m.) at Western Financial Place. K EE TH W ! 0 E LY V. 3 ON ON NO DS EN

Nitros look to renew work ethic ahead of divisional tilt with Rockies

The Kimberley Dynamiters (19-3-0-3) will look to build upon their Eddie Mountain Division lead Friday night when they travel to Invermere to face the Columbia Valley Rockies (14-13-0-0) in KIJHL action. The Dynamiters snuck away with a 3-2 overtime win against the Sicamous Eagles Sunday afternoon, following a 3-2 overtime loss to the rival Fernie Ghostriders Friday night. “We’ve got to learn to take everybody in this league serious this time of year,” said Jerry Bancks, head coach of the Kimberley Dynamiters, following his team’s Sunday win. “This league improves. Every team improves. “You can’t take anybody lightly and you have to strive to get better.” After running rampant through a 13game win streak that spanned across parts of three months -- September, October and November -- life hasn’t been quite as easy going for the Nitros in recent weeks. After the Castlegar Rebels snapped the Dynamiters dominant run Nov. 10, the defending KIJHL champions have gone 3-1-1-0. To get seven of a possible 10 points over a five-game stretch is

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could be more in touch with your feelings than you have been in quite a while. A parent, boss or friend might mar the carefree nature of the day by making a demand. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My 12-year-old daughter confessed to me this evening that she believes she is bisexual. She was quite upset about a comment made by another girl today. I immediately comforted her and explained that I love her, no holds barred. She will always be my baby. I know your column has recommended some websites for parents and personal support, but I am unable to recall them. I want to become more educated in order to help guide my child on how to be happy with who she is. This information will also help when she decides to tell her father and stepmother. Thank you. -- Love My Child Dear Love: We commend you for being a supportive, loving parent. Please keep in mind that sexuality can be more fluid than we sometimes realize, especially for teenagers, so we hope you will continue to be supportive while your daughter sorts it out. A great website for parents is PFLAG (pflag.org). And if your daughter is being bullied because of her sexual orientation, contact the school immediately. This should not be tolerated. Dear Annie: I saw the letter from “Frustrated,” the nearly 90-year-old man whose wife is now in a nursing home after a stroke. He said his oldest son won’t visit and becomes angry when asked. It’s truly sad how dynamics between parents and children can get completely off track when well-meaning parents, either through a lack of knowledge or mindfulness, do not understand the pain they cause to their children by the underlying critical messages they convey. At first glance, a son who won’t visit his elderly mother in a nursing home would seem to lack compassion. But the frustrated father who wrote the letter conveyed an unspoken tone of disapproval by implying that the older son should feel guilty for not measuring up to the example of his supportive younger brother. Based on the son’s reported outburst and his stated feelings of never being heard, this has likely been the pattern of a lifetime, however unintentional the father’s comparisons may have been. If the father truly wants to maximize success in having his older son visit, I suggest that a sincere, unqualified apology for not understanding how he previously failed to acknowledge his son’s perspective, along with your advice to extend an unpressured invitation, would go a long way toward achieving that. -- Been There Dear Been There: It is a common problem between parents and children that they see the same events through very different lenses. What’s worse is when one of them tries to convince the other that their perspective is wrong. This is a recipe for resentment and defensiveness. Parents want their children to love them, and children want to be loved. But a lifetime of misunderstandings and skewed perspectives can get in the way. In order to move past these issues, you sometimes have to be the bigger person and apologize, whether you believe it’s warranted or not. The objective is not to be “right.” It’s to have a close, loving relationship. That often takes both forgiveness and generosity of spirit. Musicians celebrate Canada Music Week If you were not at the Knox Presbyterian Church last Sunday, November 22nd at 2pm, you missed hearing thirty-six very talented students play Canadian composed music on the piano, violin, cello, guitar and voice. A large audience was in attendance to cheer on the performers. Opening the concert was emcee, Katherine Nimmert, followed by students ranging in age from around 5 to 15. The audience was treated to extremely polished performances by all in the concert. Following the concert, 14 scholarships were awarded to students with the first and second highest marks for their Royal Conservatory Exams. Congratulations to all for your diligent work. Also , many students had their own compositions adjudicated, and six received a ribbon and certificate, as the adjudicator deemed their work the best in their age groups Congratulations to all the young composers who entered. You are the future. Our thanks to the audience, teachers, and to those who donated to the EKMTA Scholarship Fund. See you next year. Submitted by Lorraine Butler

RCMP say suspect in Alberta double murder, fit to stand trial Bill Graveland Canadian Press

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. RCMP say the man accused of killing a twoyear-old southwestern Alberta girl and her father has been found fit to stand trial.

Derek Saretzky, 22, is charged with first-degree murder in the September deaths of Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette and her father Terry Blanchette. He is also charged with committing indignity to a body in the girl’s

bridge courtroom on Thursday. He said little during the brief appearance. Saretzky was initially sent for a 30-day review of his mental health, but last month a judge was told that doctors at the

Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre in Calgary needed more time for their analysis. Lawyer Wade Hlady, acting as agent for Edmonton lawyer Peter Northcott, said the fitness assessment had

only been received Wednesday. As a result, he requested the case be adjourned until Feb. 26 to give Northcott sufficient time to review what the Crown referred to as a “voluminous” amount of

material. “The Crown indicated that the initial disclosure package would be available some time in December and it is quite extensive.” Hlady said he was unaware of any of the information contained in the assessment nor could be confirm reports that Saretzky had been hospitalized as a result of going on a hunger strike. Saretzky was arrested in the Crowsnest Pass area after Terry Blanchette, 27, was found dead in his Blairmore home on Sept. 14, and a widespread Amber Alert was issued for two-year-old Hailey, who had been abducted earlier that morning. Her remains were discovered in a rural area the next day.

HALIFAX - An amateur scuba diver has recovered a bottle from the bottom of Halifax harbour that could contain beer that is more than a century old. After Jon Crouse pulled the green, glass bottle from the silt under three metres of water, he discovered that its cork was still intact and it was half full of a cloudy, sudsy liquid. Crouse later spotted a logo on the side of the cork that says, A. Keith & Son Brewery, the previous name of the now famous Halifax-based Alexander Keith’s brewing company. Markings on the bottom of the well-preserved bottle indicate it was made in England in the late 1800s by Nutall & Co., which routinely exported its products for use in Canada. Crouse says he’s not interested in drinking the bottle’s contents, but the owner of a local beer bar says if sea water hasn’t made it past the cork, the beer inside would be drinkable. Chris Reynolds, a self-described beer nerd, says the alcohol in the beer would protect it from poisonous pathogens - but in all likelihood, the beer itself would taste terrible.
