Parents concerned about school-closure plan BY KaRL YU ThE NEwS BULLETiN
A group advocating to keep Rutherford Elementary open said it’s irresponsible for Nanaimo school district to shutter the north-end school without provincial funding. According to the latest facilities plan recommendations, Rutherford could close by June 2017. Some of the student
population would transfer to nearby Frank J. Ney Elementary, which would be expanded to accommodate the influx, but with the proviso that the province provide funding. Trustees must also give approval. “I think they know that they’re not likely to get funding for that…” said Tina Bray, spokeswoman for Rutherford Open and Thriving. “Ruther-
ford is a well-utilized school. Two out of the three surrounding schools are over capacity. There is no way the Ministry of Education is going to pay for an unnecessary expansion to Frank J. Ney, especially when it leaves SD68 so poorly prepared to deal with the future. It’s plain and simply a bad plan. Let’s hope trustees realize this.” See ‘WOODLANDS’ /3
Island Ferries isn’t the only company interested in launching a passenger ferry from Nanaimo – and the port authority aims to prove it. The Nanaimo Port Authority announced Friday it will seek requests for proposals in the new year for a daily foot ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver. The bid comes as Island Ferries, a company that’s proposed a $63-million passenger service along the same stretch of industrial waterfront, continues to work on final investment. It has been looking for money to start its service since 2013, including millions in federal dollars. The port has been patient, according to Bernie Dumas, CEO and president of the port authority, but he says it feels there are other candidates willing to talk about a service and wants to see what those opportunities are. The community is also voicing a need for a passenger service and the port has the infrastructure to support it. “The port authority has just been sitting on the sidelines, working with the city and economic development … and

We’re of the opinion that, why are we waiting so long?
Island Ferries spokesman Dave Marshall said the port wanted an exorbitant amount of money that wasn’t sustainable for a start-up business. He said his company is “extraordinarily disappointed” with the port’s recent action. Marshall said Island Ferries met with port officials in June to discuss progress on equity and so it is shocked by this announcement, which is unilateral and puts the company’s work at “great risk.” See ‘PORT’ /3

we’re of the opinion that, why are we waiting so long?” Dumas said. “We’re going out to see if we can find an operator that has the financial support and the experience to do a good service for our community.” The operator would lease infrastructure from the port, but the service would be privately funded and operated. Island Ferries would also be welcome to apply, although a previous five-year effort among the two parties to arrive at terms for the site were unsuccessful.

Pig befriends pooches
I
RUPERT MAKING the grade so far in obedience classes. BY NICHOLAS PESCOD The News BulleTiN
While one little piggy went to the market and another stayed home, a particular Nanaimo piggy found himself at obedience class with a handful of pooches. For the past couple of weeks, a four-month-old kunekune mixed-breed pig named Rupert and his owners Tyler Kyle and Jessica Babcock have been attending canine obedience classes at Best Paw Forward. Despite being the only pig in a room full of dogs, Rupert gets along fine and just like his canine classmates, he is there for a reason. “He is very food driven and until he is full he will make noise,” Kyle said. Kyle and Babcock decided to enrol Rupert in classes after learning about another pig that attended Best Paw earlier this year. The couple said they want Rupert to learn basic manners and

obey them, the same way any pet owner would. “We just want general manners, like a dog. Not that he jumps on people but he will beg and squeak and squeal and we want to be able to walk him on a leash with no problems,” Kyle said. Robyn Andexser, owner and lead trainer, said having a pig in class is “fantastic” and that Rupert is a happy and interested learner who isn’t afraid of his fellow canine classmates. “He is eager to learn new things,” Andexser said. “His tail is wagging all the time
and he is a happy pig.” Classes typically last an hour and focus on positive re-enforcement techniques, often using clickers and treats as a reward for good behavior. Andexser said pigs are smart animals and with training, can learn obedience the same way a dog can. “With positive re-enforcement you can really teach an animal anything,” she said. According to Kyle and Babcock, Rupert has never had a fight with a dog, doesn’t bite and has a serious appetite. But despite a heavier diet than that of a dog, Rupert, in many ways acts the same as a dog. “You get up on the couch and he will hop on your lap and watch a movie with you,” Kyle said. Raising Rupert, as with any new pet, has had its challenges, but the couple said it has been worth it and having a pet pig has been an enjoyable experience. “It is the same struggles that you have with a puppy,” Babcock said. “He is just adorable and he is a good pet.”

Another staff recommendation could see the closure of Woodlands Secondary School at the end of June and members of the school parent advisory council hope trustees don’t follow through. “We hope the trustees go against the [staff] recommendations and keep Woodlands open because we feel that by reopening Cedar as a high school, they’re
in favour of small community schools and ask that the same consideration be given to Woodlands,” said Mary Vassilopoulos, Woodlands’ advisory council secretary. As part of the recommendation, the sports academies situated at Woodlands would be relocated to Nanaimo District Secondary School, but Vassilopoulos worries about the effect. “They’re putting
all the academies at NDSS and they haven’t removed French immersion (program) ... so we feel it’s going to be overcrowded,” said Vassilopoulos. “The only thing they’ve done is closed Woodlands and tried to move [students].” Woodlands Secondary’s’ council hopes that if trustees do vote to go ahead with closure, students will be allowed to choose schools out of the catchment zone,

Vassilopoulos said. Trustees are expected to debate and possibly vote on the plan this week. Meetings are planned for today (Dec. 1) and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. If required, a third meeting will be at the school board office on Thursday at 6 p.m.
He would not publicly share information on the investment being worked on. “We are focused on delivering the service,” said Marshall. “We have put too much money into it to be dissuaded.” He doesn’t believe two ferries can operate side by side. Dumas, however, says the community would be the winner. “If you have two people attempting to develop a service, then you are going to have some competition,” he said. The port will talk to various communities to gauge their support for a passenger ferry.

Voices matter after elections
An election shouldn’t mean the end of activism. We were encouraged to see more than 100 people march through Nanaimo’s downtown on Sunday afternoon for the local leg of the Global Climate March. The rallies around the world, spearheaded by the environmental group 350.org, were intended to lend voices to the climate movement while politicians discuss the issue at the Conference of Parties 2015 climate change talks in Paris. The speakers at Maffeo Park not only identified problems – fossil fuels, unsustainable forestry, harmful food production – but offered solutions to those problems, calling for 100 per cent renewable energy, for example, and a revitalization of local farming. One of the organizers of the march was Paul Manly, the Green Party candidate who was defeated earlier this fall in his efforts to become NanaimoLadysmith MP, and there were many other marchers bearing Green signs. That’s not to say the rally was political, really, because climate concerns are shared by Canadians of all stripes. But it’s an example of how, after an election has been fought and won – or lost – we shouldn’t feel as if we’ve done our civic duty, and can disengage and allow ourselves to be led this way and that. We have an NDP MP entrusted to make sure Vancouver Island issues matter in Ottawa, there’s a Conservative Party to provide the Official Opposition in the House of Commons and we have a Green presence continuing to advocate for the environment, as we saw in Nanaimo on the weekend. All Canadians can be a part of an unofficial opposition to keep speaking up about the subjects dear to us, whether it’s the climate or any issue. We’ve cast our votes, but our voices continue to be valuable. Pascal Zamprelli, Canadian director of Change.org tells us, “We have a critical mass of better-informed consumers, they speak to each other, there’s collective action and they’re mobilizing and able to collaborate very quickly. This is what I believe is changing the behaviour of decision-makers.” As the dark months arrive, so do time-honoured traditions of celebration of light, warmth and fellowship. Generous feelings spill over into feasting and sharing and giving. The other day, I noticed a heading about “giving back” and I remembered that heart-tugging movie Pay It Forward. What’s the difference between paying back and paying forward? Peter Buffet says “as long as most folks are patting themselves on the back for charitable acts, we’ve got a perpetual poverty machine.” Celebrate, share, give food, donate, volunteer, and think about two strategies: hold our new government to a real poverty-reduction strategy and use communications technology to tell unethical private businesses we will not support them. ◆ Marjorie Stewart is past chairwoman of the Nanaimo Foodshare Society. marjorieandalstewart@shaw.ca.

Canadians should support refugees To the Editor,
Re: Canada should welcome refugees, not treat them as threats, Letters, Nov. 24. As an immigrant to Canada and a new citizen, I must say I am very disappointed by the number of Canadians who have bought into the fear, especially when the facts are so easily found, if only one chooses to look. Instead, people are reacting to unfounded fears. The letter writer asks, “… has anyone consulted the electorate on how we feel about these people in our country?” I say yes, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won the election with this
plan clearly a part of his platform. Refugees from the Middle East will contribute to society like all refugees have in the past and will in the future. The point for now is to give these people a safe place, a refuge from the complete destruction of their homes and the murder of their families and friends. The letter writer states that “already about onequarter of the U.S. states have declared they will not accept refugees because of what happened in Paris.” It is a fact that none of the Paris terrorists were refugees. If an Islamic State terrorist wants to get into
Canada, they will not use the refugee process that takes 18 months to two years or more to complete and is very thorough. Hatred is unbecoming.
Melanie Kirk Nanaimo
To the Editor,
I’m very concerned about some of the negativity regarding welcoming refugees to Canada. Reading through the various different surnames of the people writing letters to the editor, I seem to encounter many immigrant names, my own included of course, and think that we all have some nerve denying others the rights and freedoms
We need to stand up for schools To the Editor,
Re: School closures recommended, Nov. 26. After several months of difficult research, fact-finding, accounting, organizing and more research, dozens of community members presented a case to keep Rutherford open. Most of the people involved gave up copious amounts of their time, took days off work, missed time with their families, and rushed and hustled through the 60 days of a stressful consultation period to make obvious the need of Rutherford Elementary for the education of north-end students and the prevention of overcrowding in three other schools. Not one of our voices has had any effect on superintendent John Blain’s plan for the north-end schools. He continues to report that there will be $500,000 in savings per year in a Rutherford closure when it was made clear that these calculations are incorrect and would be mitigated by doing repairs. We proved with

thorough accounting that closing Rutherford would only save 0.5 per cent of the district operating expenses. Are the disruptions and instability of closing this school worth saving only 0.5 per cent? Please, Nanaimo – community members and parents – stand up to the school board and let trustees know they can be advocates for educational stability and predictability. Closing schools is not the way to support growth and development or a way to support families.

we have accepted for ourselves. Canada has had some very black times in our history of accepting immigrants. Many may not remember, but my family speaks of a time when European Jews tried to come to Canada during the 1930s. Despite our vast space and resources, we only accepted 5,000. This is a disgraceful period of Canadian history that I would not like to see repeated. When I hear the paranoia, I think I’m in another country, perhaps our neighbours to the south?

Christmas spectacular show appeals to the whole family By RACHEL STERN The News BulleTiN
F
or the past nine y e a r s , Ye l l o w point Christmas Spectacular has brought a little winter wonderland into people’s lives. Kathryn BowenRoberts, producer and director of Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular, plans the show and re-creates it each year using different music to give people a familiar framework but a new experience every time. She likes to keep the element of surprise. “What brings people back is they kind of know what to expect,” she said. “We always have White Christmas at the end to create that kind of Bing Crosby kind of Christmas feel. White Christmas is always special. I know the show has become a big part of people’s start to Christmas.”
The show opens with a big broadway number then it goes into a ballet performance, followed by a rock ‘n’ roll number and then a crooner song. The spectacular shows at the Cedar Community Hall and Port Theatre this year. “One of the beautiful things about the Cedar Community Hall is that you are surrounded by that music feeling,” said Bowen-Roberts. “We try to get audience participation as soon as possible so they feel involved.” During the carols, choir members go into the audience as part of the performance. “ I t ’s a p e a c e f u l moment in the show and gives people a moment of reflection,” said Bowen-Roberts. She said that while that intimate setting is harder to pull off in the Port Theatre, the cast and crew have worked to ensure audience
members still feel that connection during the songs. There is music to appeal to people of all ages from The Beach Boys to ’90s dance to a big Rock of Ages number. For young children, the snowman appears every year. “They are pretty mesmerized throughout,” said Bowen-Roberts. T h e Ye l l o w p o i n t Christmas Spectacular shows at the Cedar Community Hall and the Port Theatre. On Dec. 4-6 and Dec. 11-13 it shows at 7 p.m. in Cedar and on Dec. 5-6 and Dec. 11-13 it shows at 3 p.m. at the hall. During the event donations of nonparishable food items will also be accepted for the Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. “It’s a unique experience,” said Gerold Haukenfrers, president of the Nanaimo Blues Society. The band will be playing Christmas songs from the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. These aren’t carols, but songs crafted by blues

Theatre adds spice to play readings
I
WESTERN EDGE hosts adult-themed holiday dramas.
Western Edge Theatre is getting naughty this Christmas. The theatre company presents Christmas Naughty and Nice at Kismet Theatre Academy Saturday (Dec. 5) at 7:30 p.m. The event, called Plays and Mince-Meat Pie, features short plays by Daniel Curzon read by Nanaimo actors. The short plays cover adult themes and content. They include Honest Christmas
Presents, which looks at a family that gives unusually candid gifts. A Christmas Miracle at the Open Mess is the story of two gay army officers who wonder if they can reveal their relationship. The last is The Christmas to End All Christmases. It’s a twist on the traditional story of A Christmas Carol, but includes Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Mrs. Claus. “Christmas Naughty and Nice is just under and hour so afterwards we’ll have loads of time to enjoy some festive food and drink and celebrate the season with our audi-
ence and guests,” said Frank Moher, Western Edge’s artistic director, in a press release. “We’ll have pie there, as usual, but this time we’ll have other sorts of goodies as well. And there’ll be some surprises.” The theatre company’s next production is Venus in Fur, which shows in January. Admission to the event is by donation. People are also asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank. For more information, please go to http://western edge.org.

Ronald Thomas Aitken passed away suddenly, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family on the afternoon of November 23, 2015 in Nanaimo BC. He is survived by his 6 children, Rob, Keith, Mark, Carole (Phee), Debbie (Weiss), Les and their families, of whom he was so very proud. He was an incredible athlete with a love of all sports and excelled at everything he did. From being the best fastball pitcher in BC at the age of 18, to being banned from the bowling league for a year because he was just that good. Fortunate to retire at the age of 54 from a gratifying 38 year career at BC Hydro, he then pursued his passion for horse racing and being involved in the lives of his grandchildren. For many years he owned harness racers in Cloverdale and he loved treating his family to days in the Club House. He beamed proudly in photos taken in the Winner’s Circle. He attended his grandchildren’s sporting events, extracurricular activities and wanted the best for them academically. From all the trips to Seattle for ball games and Disneyland vacations, we will cherish these memories forever and are so thankful for all of the time we had with you. We love you, and will miss you forever. First Memorial Funeral Services 250-754-8333

Clippers stay hot with win
VIU Mariners win in OT against U.S. opponent BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
When the VIU Mariners play a complete game, they can compete at the next level. Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team won one of two exhibition games this past weekend at the VIU gym against the Northwest Christian University Beacons. The M’s won Saturday’s contest in overtime, 100-97, but were defeated Sunday by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics squad from Eugene, Ore. “It’s nice to see that we can play with good quality NAIA teams,” said Matt Kuzminski, M’s coach, whose team is now 3-3 this fall against opponents from that league. Saturday’s game was one of momentum swings, as the Mariners built a lead, but then had trouble handling the Beacons’ pressure and gave the lead back. “Our guys showed a lot of composure to stick with it and stay together when things were going bad for for us, which is a big stride for us…” said Kuzminski. “So we’re mak-

ing progress.” Down by three points in the dying seconds of regulation, point guard John Thompson was fouled on a three-point attempt, and so he went to the free throw line and knocked down all three to force OT. “We were the aggressors in overtime, I thought,” Kuzminski said. Jason Fortin, VIU forward, said when the game went to overtime, his team was out to win it. “The game isn’t going to count for our record or anything, but I think guys need to have the mindset that we’re always trying to get better, so we should be excited for any game, any time we get a chance to play,” he said. Thompson scored 26 in the win, with Josh Ross adding 19, Bryson Cox scoring 17, Fortin adding 15 and Chris Parker contributing 14. The next day, Thompson led the M’s with 22 points, Ross had 14 and Fortin had 13. GAME ON … The Mariners will play two more exhibitions against NAIA teams this fall, visiting Warner Pacific and Concordia on Dec. 18-19. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
