Drilling for new bridge begins this week; nearby residents prepare for noise and vibration SHERI REGNIER Trail Times
Neighbourhoods in East Trail and south of downtown are about to have a little more shaking going on. As work progresses on the new walking bridge, the next stage calls for heavy drilling to stabilize the structure’s anchoring system and two towers. The massive drilling rig arrived in pieces by semi and assembled at the Rotary Park site over the weekend. Drilling eight to 12 metres into bedrock for the south tower’s six pilings will begin this week. Operations to complete 24 pilings in total, is expected to last up to 12 weeks, and includes 10 pilings on the west side, two on the abutment and four pilings for each of the two wind cable anchors. Once work wraps up on the west side of the river, the rig will be moved to East Trail near the McQuarrie Street and Columbia Avenue intersection. Another eight pilings will secure the north tower as well as four anchors and the east side abutment. Previous geotechnical studies found deep soil on that side of the water, so crews will be drilling up to 30 metres to stabilize the pilings. That will mean noise and most likely ongoing vibrations for those living in the proximity. But seniors at Chateau Manor (1717 Columbia Ave.) are taking it in stride and gearing up for the inevitable. “It’s been noisy,” says Angela Fabbro. “And we know it’s going to (keep) being noisy, but there’s always something to look at out the window.” Margaret Browne used work as a public health nurse across the street from Chateau Manor - when the building, now apartments, housed Trail public health. She recalls walking the loop around town on her lunch break, and looks forward to having that opportunity again. “I walked the bridges everyday in 20 minutes,” said Browne. “Of course I was much

younger then, but it will be nice to walk by the river on that side (Riverside Avenue) again.” Pipe piling and anchor drilling operations are slated until Feb. 25, with work taking place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Much thought was, and still is, going into construction of the bridge, says City Engineering Technician Warren Proulx. That means, as the job progressed, so did aspects of the design. The crossing was first planned to be nine feet across, but has since been expanded to 12 feet in width. The structure will house service lines, including sewer and water, so extra feet is a utilitarian feature to support industrial pipes. On top of that, the bridge is designed to be mostly static, meaning no swaying regardless the weather or weight it carries at any one time. Following an in-depth wind study that reviewed historical weather and recreated conditions with a small scale model, the additional three feet were factored into the design, Proulx clarified. Once the drilling and piling phase is complete, the actual bridge construction will make an interesting visual for passersby, said Proulx. That stage will be completed 200 feet above the site, not from the water. A four-man steelworker crew will be suspended in a cage-like structure and building across the Columbia River incrementally. The project is slated for completion by September 2016. While Chateau Manor residents prepare for what’s coming with nary a complaint, there is one senior who has a request for the city. “Years ago I used to watch my grandson play at Butler Park,” says Alice Westbury, 96. “I’ve always loved to see the grass and flowers growing. So I only ask that when this is all done, I can walk across (viewpoint benches across from the facility) and see everything growing again.”
Montrose Mayor Joe Danchuk. “I think there’s going to be up to three people so there’s probably going to be a byelection,” he added. “And I think it’s good we are seeing interest at the local level.”
Nomination packages are available at the village office and budding politicians have until Dec. 11 to hand in the documents. The applications are then vetCONTINUED ON PAGE 3 Contact the Times:

Verigin, board secretary-treasurer. “Though there is no reason to believe that something has changed.” Radon is an indirect decay product of uranium, and radon gas comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in the ground and only becomes a concern when it reaches high levels, such as the “hot spots” found in the B.C. Interior, according to Health Canada. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer with Health Canada estimating as many as 16 per cent of lung cancer deaths attributed to radon exposure. Testing involves plac-
ing a small puck-like kit within the lowest area of a building for a minimum of three months before it’s mailed to a laboratory for results. The District Occupational Health and Safety Committee is overseeing the testing in the school district, which should occur over the winter. The health authority encourages everyone to test their homes or buildings as it is the only way to confirm radon levels, said Karl Hardt, IH communications officer. “IH has been working with schools and school districts for a number of years, and a radon awareness initiative has enabled Interior Health to provide free

Home kits are inexpensive, easy-touse, and available at the Trail Health and Environment Community office at 1319 Bay Ave. Testing services, including analysis, are available with a $15 donation, or free, courtesy of the Donna Schmidt Lung Cancer Prevention Society. Residents can also test their home environment with a test kit (about $30) through www.radonaware.ca. Testing is best during cold months when homes or buildings are closed up, and the risk of radon gas accumulating in indoor spaces is highest.

Flu-season policy in effect at KBRH VALERIE ROSSI Trail Times
Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is asking visitors to mask up during flu season. Starting today, the Trail hospital is one of the provincial health-care facilities encouraging people who have not had a flu shot to wear a mask to help protect those at-risk of influenza. The masks, along with hand sanitizer, are available in the lobby at the information desk. “In the hospital, we’ve got very vulnerable patients, and if you have got the flu or a cold it’s really important to protect yourself from passing that onto that vulnerable patient,” said Jane Cusden, acute health services director for Interior Health Authority. “The majority of staff do have the flu vaccine, which contributes to protecting them against the flu but also protecting our patients.” This is the second year Interior Health has set this visitor policy and the fourth year it has encouraged its staff to get the flu shot or commit to wearing a mask at work. Joanne Tench, KBRH infection control practitioner, said the best practice remains the

Teasdale, mentioning names will be made public Dec. 21. “Then we put notices up in the village to get the word out,” he added. “We’ll have the list of candidates in the main office, on our bulletin board and the Montrose Facebook page.” After that, it is up to the candidates to engage the voting body prior to the first advanced poll, slated for Jan. 6. Though he’s looking forward to having a full council in the new year, Danchuk says it’s been business as usual in village chambers.
“Everyone has been attending and we’ve always have a quorum,” he said, referring to the October resignation of Mark Reid. “We’ve had enough for the vote and no issues have come up because of the shortage so far. But it will definitely be nice to get another person there.” If last year’s municipal election is an indication of interest, when seven residents ran for council and two for mayor, villagers will have further advanced polling opportunities Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, before General Voting Day, Jan. 16.
they enter the building.” Other facilities following the province-wide initiative include long-term care homes, public health units, and outpatient clinics. Each year there are approximately 3,500 deaths from the flu and its complications in Canada, according to the Ministry of Health. People infected with flu are highly contagious and can spread the virus for 24-hours before they even realize they are sick. The flu vaccine is free to people intending to visit a health-care facility and is available at public health clinics, physicians’ offices, travel clinics and pharmacies. It’s also free in B.C. for children between the ages of six months and five years, seniors 65 years or older, pregnant women and Aboriginal people, as well as individuals with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems and their household contacts and caregivers. The nasal spray flu vaccine is also available for free at public health clinics and physicians’ offices to children two to 17 years of age who are at risk of serious illness from influenza or who live with someone who is at risk.
Early interest shown in vacant councillor seat

Once all t’s are crossed, each candidate is notified and given until Dec. 17 to consider if he or she still wishes to go ahead with the process. The following Monday, the official list is posted and campaigning can begin. “We won’t know exactly what the deal is until that day (Dec. 17),” explained Chief Elections Officer Bryan
“The schedule will work as it avoids significant election activity dates and possible conflict with the upcoming holiday season,” said Teasdale. The winner will be announced the following Monday. Village costs are estimated to be $1,500 if the seat is filled by acclamation (only one nomination) and about $4,000 if the process does go to a January byelection. “I hope community minded people want to step forward and help council move ahead,” added Danchuk.

Inconvenient truths of climate change
P
remier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak have joined the thousands of jet-setters in Paris to once again stage negotiations for a global climate treaty. The embarrassing failures of these United Nations events, such as the one in Lima, Peru last year, have been forgotten. Canadian TV only showed file images of an effigy of Stephen Harper receiving a “fossil of the day” award for his alleged failure to rein in Canada’s two per cent of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. Now Justin Trudeau leads our biggest-ever delegation to COP21, as the Paris meeting is called. Trudeau hasn’t even begun to develop a plan for Canada, asking provinces to come up with their own first, but he’s already hailed as a visionary. This is similar to the newly elected Barack Obama, who modestly predicted in 2008 that history would record his win as “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” Perhaps Obama wasn’t completely full of CO2, since in this

List” says that’s about right, and the population trend is no longer “decreasing” but is now “unknown.” None of this is to deny that our climate is warming, or that the Industrial Revolution and carbon fuel use are part of the picture. It’s the religious zeal, misuse of data and attacks on skeptics that are troubling. B.C. already leads the country with its small but broad-based carbon tax, about which Clark will boast at every opportunity in Paris. We won’t see the B.C. Liberal government’s final “Climate 2.0” plan until next spring, but their advisory committee wants to start jacking up the carbon tax in 2018. Northern and Interior B.C. folks are assured they will receive bigger rebates to reflect the fact that they pay more carbon tax to drive long distances in the cold. And B.C.’s aggressive 2020 greenhouse gas target? The government admits we’re not going to make that, because the economy is growing. Trade missions column contains errors
There are significant errors that need correcting in the opinion piece published last Wednesday (“B.C. trade missions fail to deliver bang for the buck,” Trail Times Nov. 25). Our economy has benefitted enormously from trade missions and in particular our focus on Asian markets has attracted investment, increased exports and helped B.C. diversify. The proof is in the numbers. The value of B.C. exports – wood, agrifoods and other resources - to China has increased by 375 per cent over the last 10 years. This past mission was one of our most successful ever, and the 45 agreements signed in
China will add an estimated $1.4 billion worth of trade and investment to our economy. The writer wrongly assumes that the sums reflected in the news release issued is the total value of the deals made on the last mission. The figures are those of companies who chose to make public statements on the value of their deals signed. Other companies share figures with government on condition that government respects the confidentiality of their business agreements to maintain their competitiveness. It’s the sum total of both those groups that reflect the estimates of the value of deals made during the mission.
The writer also fails to acknowledge the importance of building relationships with senior executives and government officials in powerful and emerging economies. Nothing takes the place of face-to-face meetings and discussion of shared interests to spark ideas and help make B.C. top of mind when future opportunities present themselves. Over the past decade our work around attracting foreign direct investment has facilitated $14.5 billion into our economy. All in all, a pretty good return on investment for taxpayers. much part of our communities. Publicly-funded job centres in some countries now openly refer individuals to food banks, and we may see this in Canada soon. Food banks could serve a dual role - as food distributors and information nodes. Whether the government is there to help families in need or not, food banks will remain. No government can get it right all the time. Food banks cover the cracks in an imperfect social benefits system, responding effectively to market needs. Every food bank differs, based on space, the number of clients served and the ingenuity of the people who manage them. No government programs can replicate what agile food banks do on a daily basis. Where Canada’s government can be most effective is in the North, where residents are highly vulnerable to higher food prices. The new Liberal government has promised $40 million over four years to support a program called Nutrition North, which is designed to keep food prices lower. In the past, funds have been put into the distribution system. But a more efficient approach would be to equally disburse funds to food consumers. Certainly we ought to find ways to make sure food banks are needed less in the future. But food banks are miracles of the human spirit, allowing us to help our peers in desperate times. That is a wonderful legacy. Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is a professor at the Food Institute at the University of Guelph. He is currently on leave at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.

Accused Kootenay bank robbery accomplice denies involvement BILL METC ALFE Nelson Star
Accused bank robber Krista Kalmikoff, 26, testified in Nelson Supreme Court this week that she wasn’t complicit in a number of local robberies committed by Andrew Stevenson and that she didn’t know he committed them. Kalmikoff is charged with using a prohibited or restricted weapon to commit a criminal offence, knowingly oc-
cupying a vehicle in which there is a prohibited firearm, knowingly possessing property obtained from a criminal offence, and failing to stop a vehicle while being pursued by police. The charges stem from a series of robberies in the spring of 2014 to which Stevenson pled guilty earlier this year. He is currently serving a 10-year jail sentence. Stevenson and Kalmikoff were arrested on April 25,
2014, following a highspeed police chase after Stevenson robbed the Nelson and District Credit Union. Kalmikoff pled not guilty to all charges on the premise that in the instances she was his getaway driver she didn’t know he had just committed a robbery. Stevenson and Kalmikoff were living together before and throughout the period of the robberies. Prosecutor Sunday Patola probed why

Kalmikoff wasn’t aware Stevenson was buying and selling pills and carrying out robberies. The two were living together with three young children — two of them his, one hers — first in Salmo and then in Slocan, both of them on disability, he for rheumatoid arthritis and addiction to morphine, she on medication for anxiety and depression. Kalmikoff described how she would often drive Stevenson to specific locations, wait for him while he went
somewhere, and then drive home again. When she asked what he was up to, he would tell her it was none of her business. No one ever visited their home because “he did not want people around the house,” she said. Kalmikoff ’s mother, Laura Kalmikoff, testified that although Krista and her young son sometimes visited her at her home in Salmo, she was unable to visit them because she did not know their address.

“I felt he was isolating her from the family,” her mother said. During the months before their arrest, Stevenson began bringing home more groceries than they needed, and giving Kalmikoff money. If she asked where it came from, he would say he was working, but would not say at what job. Kalmikoff said she would often wake up in the night and find him gone, with no explanation later. Kalmikoff described how she found a sawed-off shotgun in the closet and asked Stevenson to get rid of it, and he agreed. She assumed he had done that, she said. But when asked by Patola if she had checked to see if it was gone or asked Stevenson where he had sold it or how much he was paid for it, she said she had not. Later she found the same gun in a shed and confronted him about it, and he agreed again to get rid of it. The weapon used in the robberies was a

sawed-off shotgun. One day Stevenson’s young daughter came to her in their Slocan house and asked why there was “a bunch of medicine in the cooler.” The cooler, Kalmikoff told the court, had been in the kitchen and empty for a while. She said that rather than inspect the cooler she went to Stevenson who was in the bathroom, confronted him about it, and was told that it was none of her business and that he would get rid of it. Kalmikoff said she began to get suspicious that Stevenson was the robber around the time of robberies of credit unions in Castlegar and Salmo. “Did you confront him with your suspicions?” Patala asked. “No, because I did not like to get in conflict with him,” Kalmikoff replied. “Didn’t you think living with him was risky?” “Yes, but I did not know how to get out of the situation.” Patola asked if she could have gone and lived with her mother or her grandmother, and Kalmikoff agreed she could have. Patola challenged Kalmikoff ’s assertion that despite waiting with the car in the Superstore parking lot while he robbed the Nelson and District Credit Union, and despite seeing him running back to her at the car with a bag, she did not suspect that he had just committed a robbery. “When he got into the car, running, you knew he had a gun and money,” Patola said. “No,” Kalmikoff replied. Asked why she then drove their car at highspeed through Nelson chased by the police, Kalmikoff said she was “panicked and overwhelmed.” Asked why she told the arresting officer she did not know Stevenson, Kalmikoff agreed with the prosecutor that she was trying to save herself. The trial continued on Monday, with Stevenson taking the stand in Kalmikoff ’s defence.

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks officially hit the half-way mark of the season on Saturday, winning their 18th game in a 6-1 drubbing of the Golden Rockets. The win was a bounce back effort for the Hawks after being eviscerated, 10-2, by the Creston Valley Thundercats on Friday. “We didn’t play a very bad game last night.” said Hawks assistant coach Bill Birks following Saturday’s win. “They (Creston) outworked us, they out-skated us, they out-chanced us, they were a better team last night. But it wasn’t a 10-2 score.” In Saturday’s match, the Hawks McKoy Hauk netted the winner and Braden Fuller had a big game scoring once and adding two assists to put him at 26 points on the season. After the Rockets Layne Hunter was given a game for a check from behind, the Nitehawks pressed on the power play. Hauk took a pass at the point from Allan Pruss and blasted it through a screen and over the blocker of Golden goalie Keyon Bittner at 11:32 of the first period to put B.V. up 2-1. The win over Golden marks the midway point of the season for the 185-1-0-2 Nitehawks that sit two points up on Castlegar for first place in the Neil Murdoch division. Beaver Valley opened the scoring on a similar play but this time Jake

Yuris took a blue line pass from Brett Roberts and blasted it by Bittner for a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in. The Rockets evened it three minutes later on their own power play when a shot rebounded off the back boards over the net and off the body of Jake Gudjonson and by a surprised Drake Poirier in the Hawks goal. The Pruss brothers rounded out the scoring in the first period on a dazzling passing play where Allan finished a gift from Michael by wiring it off the post and in to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead midway through the period. Beaver Valley fired 20 shots on the Rockets goal in the first while Golden replied with eight shots on net. Fuller made it 4-1 when he intercepted a pass, broke through the defence and fired a shot under the glove of Bittner just 17 seconds into the second for a shorthanded goal. Despite outshooting the Rockets 22-12 in the second, that was all the Hawks would get until the third when Jace Weegar took a perfect pass in the slot from recent acquisition Nolan Percival and beat Bittner glove side just 15 seconds in. Twenty seconds later the former Nelson Leaf tallied his first goal as a Hawk, deftly batting the puck out of the air and over the shoulder of the Rockets goalie to make it 6-1. Percival’s work ethic was outstanding in Saturday’s game, generating offence while putting in a solid two-way effort.

“I want to bring some speed to the team, and just be someone that can be relied on for hard work,” said Percival. “Last night was a wake-up call for us, we need to start playing, and tonight we got back on track and we need to keep it going.” After spending three years with the Leafs, Percival admits it will take some adjusting, but his two-point night certainly helps the transition. “It’s different, a transition for sure, so far they’ve been really nice over here, and getting to know everybody, so it’s been really good.” As for the Hawks’ coaching staff, with injuries plaguing the team, they are looking for an injection of energy in adding Percival, a five-foot-eight, 18-year-old forward. “Tonight he played well,” said Birks. “I don’t think his confidence is there … It’s going to take some time to get comfy, and he’s loving it here, and we’re glad to have him.” Bittner was the Rockets’ star of the game stopping 49 of 55 shots while Poirier blocked 27 in the Hawks net. Fuller received player of the game for the Hawks. On Friday, Lien Miller-Jeannotte scored a goal and added three assists in Creston’s 10-2 victory. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, but the Thundercats broke it open with four goals in the second and five in the third, outshooting B.V. 28-27. “We’ve played 26-27 games now CONTINUED ON A10

It was a “Tale of Two Cities,” as the Trail Smoke Eaters split a pair of weekend road games, beating the Wenatchee Wild 4-2 on Friday before falling 8-1 to the Penticton Vees on Saturday. The road trip got off to a great start on Friday, in front of a crowd of 3,500 fans. The Smokies jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead on goals from Connor BrownMaloski, Ryan Swanson and Kale Howarth on the way to knocking off the second place Mainland division team. “The Wenatchee game went really well,” said Smoke Eater coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “To get out that quickly out of the gate and score a couple of goals gave us a lot of confidence, and we took that and kind of carried it through the game.” Howarth’s goal 2:49 into the first period proved the winner when he took a pass from Spencer McLean and beat goalie Garrett Nieto, in for starter Chase Perry, who was pulled after giving up two quick goals. The trip was the first to the Wild’s Arena for the Smokies and the local Wenatchee organizers put on a show for the capacity crowd reminiscent of semi-pro hockey promotions. “It was very well done, and I think it is a great move for the league to incorporate them into the BCHL.” said Deschenes. “It only makes the league better and more solidified among the other Junior A leagues in Canada.” Connor Brown-Maloski got the ball rolling when he backhanded a shot past Perry 63 seconds into the match with Nick Halloran assisting. CBM and Ross Armour then set up Ryan Swanson 31 seconds later, as the veteran d-man from Eden Prairie, Minn. blasted a shot from the
blue line past Perry. Kienan Scott added his fifth goal in four games on a breakaway pass from Max Newton at 11:46 of the second period to make it 4-0 heading to the third. Trail’s defence bent a little but did not break as the Wild’s Dakota Raabe and Logan Milliken beat Bailey MacBurnie to cut the lead in half midway through the final frame but the Smokies would hold on for the win. Brown-Maloski was named the game’s first star, MacBurnie received second star honours for his 30 saves, and Raabe the third star for the Wild. “Bailey played really well, and it got a little bit tight near the end, but all in all we were in control from start to finish. It was a good moral victory so to speak for the group.” The win brought the Smokies within six points of the Vernon Vipers for the final playoff spot in the Interior division standings. Trail has three games in hand on a Vipers team that lost both ends of a home-andhome to Salmon Arm. On Saturday, the Vees came out flying, scoring in the first 64 seconds of play on their way to an 8-1 thumping of the Smokies. Scott Conway had a four-point night and Demico Hanoun scored twice including the winner at 5:38 of the first period to lead Penticton to its 26th win of the season. “The way things have played out this year so far, we just can’t put together some consistent efforts,” said Deschenes. “We go from a great game to a not so great game or vice versa. There’s nothing in between that, other than you go to sleep, you wake up, you eat and then get back on the ice, so that’s pretty much what we’re going to try to address moving forward.” CONTINUED ON A10

gets that much harder because we’re not built to do this once,” Reilly said. “With the GM we have, the coaching staff we have and the players they’ve brought in, we’ve been built to do this multiple times and it’s on us to make sure that happens.” The road to the Grey Cup hasn’t always been a smooth one for Reilly and the Eskimos. In 2013, the club finished last in the West Division with a 4-14 record before hiring head coach Chris Jones.
THE C ANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - Mike Reilly doesn’t see the Edmonton Eskimos being one-hit wonders. Edmonton captured its first Grey Cup title in 10 years Sunday with a 26-20 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks at Investors Group Field. Reilly, the game MVP, believes the Eskimos have the framework in place to win multiple championships. “We’ll celebrate it, recoup for a couple of months but then the work

It’s a tough barn to play in and they play hard, so we’ll get our guys as prepared as possible and hopefully it’s a bounce back game from that Penticton effort.” The Smokies finally return to the Cominco Arena for a Friday game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, and host the Wild on Saturday. and we haven’t played eight or 10 really good ones,” said Birks. “We have lots of injuries with Kyle Hope, Sam Swanson, and Lyle Frank out. “Those guys are a huge part of this team. It just filters through everybody, their hard work, they all play the game the right way, they work hard they don’t take a shift off, and it filters through the bench, and we don’t have that right now.” The Nitehawks next game goes on Dec. 8 when they host the Spokane Braves. Hawks Notes: The Hawks also lost another goaltender last week. Just when Billy Gorn was settling in nicely, the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League snatched him up, leaving B.V. with just Drake Poirier to tend the net. The Broncos found themselves short between the pipes after sending former Nitehawk goalie Brett Clark to the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL in a trade a week ago. “Terry’s been on the hunt probably for the last six weeks really, on and off,” said Birks. “We find one, lose one, find one, then one leaves. He has a few guys in mind, but the D1 carding deadline is coming. On Tuesday there’s lots of junior A cuts possibly, so we’ll wait and see.” Today marks the Dec. 1 deadline where all Junior teams must reduce the number of carded players from 30 to 25.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Despite some mighty competition, Katniss and her crew have dominated the box office once again. Rentrak estimates on Sunday say “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2” held on to its firstplace spot in its second weekend in theatres, earning $51.6 million to top “The Good Dinosaur” and “Creed” in their Thanksgiving weekend debuts. Disney and Pixar’s animated dinosaur movie took second place with $39.2 million across the weekend, while “Creed,” a new entry into the Rocky Balboa canon, came in third with $30.1 million. “Victor Frankenstein” was not so lucky. The $40 million revival of Mary Shelley’s monster classic, earned just $2.35 million from Friday to Sunday.

Live TV is still overwhelmingly popular, but VOD sees ‘rapid’ growth: Numeris THE C ANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Even though the overwhelming majority of Canadians still watch live TV, a new study says there has been “rapid” growth in people accessing video on demand through their service providers. Canadian audience measurement firm Numeris released a report Friday which found about 90 per cent of overall viewing is still live - a broadcast over the air or through cable - as compared with on demand. But the findings also noted a shift in how younger demographics are watching television. “Services such as video on demand are relatively new offerings in Canada, but they have been steadily on the rise,” the report said. “Catch-up viewing is growing rapidly, especially for the younger age groups.” In the study, video-on-demand was considered anything viewed through either a set-top box or a broadcaster’s website or smartphone app. It conducted the study with its radio and TV panel of 5,000 households, made up of 11,000 individuals more than two years old. Numeris did not consider other sources, such as video streaming services like Netflix and Shomi or illegal online downloads, which are harder to accurately track. The most common VOD users were females 25 to 49 years old, with a job, and children under 12 years. In the United States, many cable channels have been shifting away from determining a TV show’s success by its “same-day” ratings numbers, arguing that advertisers should pay based on the popularity of shows over several days of VOD availability. Last week, Fox became the first of the big U.S. networks to stop providing “same-day” ratings to the public. In Canada, the changes have been much slower, though an eventual shift is expected by Numeris. “The importance of this viewer information will increase in value as time-shifted platforms continue to grow in popularity,” it said.

Dear Annie: I am a 51-year-old attractive professional, divorced twice and currently engaged to a 58-year-old man who also is twice divorced. We met online and hit it off pretty quickly. He has a magnetic personality, and sex is great between us. He moved in, and I am supporting him financially until he gets his businesses in order. He has had four DUIs and recently spent some time in jail. I have stood by him through this. He has always been upfront that he likes to view porn a lot and wants to experiment sexually. This doesn’t bother me. But he posted an ad online asking another woman to join us for sex. While we may fantasize about this in the bedroom, he wants to make it real and this makes me uncomfortable. But he gets angry if I say so. (He also doesn’t like when I mention the money issues between us.) I have been through a lot over the past few years, including getting out of an abusive marriage.

Nadia Elena Giselda (Pezzi) Matteucci On Friday November 27, 2015 Nadia Matteucci, wife, mother, nonna, bisnonna, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 with her husband Guido, children, and grandchildren by her side. Nadia was born in Bussi sul Tirino, Bussi, Pescara, Italia on August 18, 1932. She was the 2nd child of 6, born to Constantino and Angelina Pezzi. When she was 20 she moved to Rome where she worked as a nanny for the Fornelli Family. In 1957, she left Italy on a ship headed to Halifax, and took a train to Nelson. She made her way to Christina Lake where she was to marry Oscar Tedesco, she was a mail order bride. When Father Maglio was informed that they were to marry he refused because of their 20 year age difference. In order for Nadia to remain in Canada, Oscar had to help her find a job as her sponsor or she would have to return to Italy. As it happened she found a job in Trail at the Kootenay Hotel, and had room and board there. Nadia didn’t have any family here, but soon made friends with the Bressanutti and the Corrado families. The Kootenay Hotel is where she met the love of her life, Guido Matteucci. For Guido, it was love at first sight. Nadia and
Sept.28/1962 - Nov. 24/2015 Stuart passed away suddenly on November 24 in Calgary, Alta., from complications following an illness. “Stu” loved to play piano and loved art and nature; his paintings of the Kootenays are a beautiful reminder of his passion. Stuart is survived by his three sisters, Arlene (Hugo), Monica, Lenore (Dennis) and brother Mark, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Eunice and Eugene (Whiz) and sister Marilyn Baldwin. There is no public service at Stuart’s request. His many friends and family will miss him dearly.
Guido dated for 3 months before getting married July 4, 1959, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Nadia and Guido were married for 56 years. Together, they had 5 children: Loriana, Marina, Giuseppe (Joe), Luigi, and Riccardo, 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Nadia had many jobs throughout her life. Most of which involved cooking. Nadia loved to cook, bake, and entertain people. She loved making people happy through food. Nadia’s many jobs included working at the Kootenay Hotel, Melatini’s Café, Lenarducci’s Laundry, Z Bar, Italian Village, Luigi’s Pizza, Lou’s Bakery, Crown Point Hotel, Union Hotel, Trail Hotel, Carmela’s Ristorante, and lastly, The Colombo Lodge where she worked for 17 years. Nadia’s cooking was well known for her pasta and sauce, chicken, pizza and especially her stew. In 2006 she had to give up her cooking due to health issues, which broke her heart. Nadia was a strong, vibrant, passionate, energetic, generous, and at times feisty woman. To those who knew her, you know what we’re talking about. Nadia also had a heart of gold. If she knew someone was sick, injured or who lost someone she would be over with food - typically a pizza, lasagna, or a torta. She never showed up empty handed. When her children were getting married, she was hands on – spending the day baking and cooking for the wedding. As soon as she was done in the kitchen, she would be ready to get dressed up and dance the night away. Her other passion was dancing, how she loved to dance. She loved going to banquets or any gathering where there were a lot of people and entertainment. She had a zest for life, and family was everything to her. When her children blessed her with grandchildren, her whole face would light up. She al-

ways said that she was lucky because God blessed her with 5 beautiful children and her kids in turn gave her beautiful grandchildren - in her eyes, they were all angels. Nadia has left an imprint on all of us. She was the light force and heart and soul of this family. She will be forever remembered and missed. She’s not alone, and has now been reunited with her son Joe and grandson Mitch. Nadia was predeceased by her grandson Mitch in December 2008, and her son Joe in January 2015. Nadia was heartbroken when she lost them both. She was also predeceased by her parents Constantino and Angelina, and brother Gino. Nadia is survived by her husband Guido of 56 years, daughters Loriana (Murray) and Marina, sons Luigi (Leanna) and Riccardo (Jen), and daughter-in-law Deb. Grandchildren; Brittany (Chris), Lindsay (Eric), Kailyn (Devon), Dustin, Morgan (Erik), Bailey, Luciano, Nadia, and Nico, and great-grandchild, Ella. Also left to mourn Nadia’s passing; brother Riccardo (Iole), sisters Aida, Anna, Natalina (Linuccia), sister-in-law Ernesta, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rosary will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church @ 7:00 pm Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church @ 10:30 am with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca Arriverderci Nadia, until we see you again.
