Grand Forks RCMP get new corporal CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The new Grand Forks RCMP non-commissioned officer is settling in and enjoying the area. Cpl. Philip Crack started in town on Nov. 18 after transferring from Terrace where he worked for West Pacific Region Traffic Services. Crack is taking over from Cpl. Richard Lanz, who is retiring in January. As well, a new staff sergeant is expected to arrive in January. “I was the corporal in charge of the integrated road safety unit,” said Crack. “We were responsible for strictly doing traffic enforcement.” Crack, who moved to Grand Forks with his wife and two school-aged children, said he is enjoying the area so far. “People are very friendly,” he said. “Everyone is very welcoming and appreciative.” Crack, who grew up in Merritt, said he was in Terrace on a “limited duration post” and after four years he was able to pick where he wanted • See NEW CORPORAL and see also CORPORAL RETIRES page 8

Goodwill at Christmastime CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

When Betty and Don Brothers found out about a young family who have been down on their luck since the husband was laid off from his job, they knew they had to do something. With the Brothers wanting to downsize from their house, they decided they would sell off many of their Christmas decorations, dishes, tablecloths and other treasures and give the money to the family to help them out during this holiday season. “Through the grapevine I heard about this local family,” said Betty. “Apparently the husband got laid off and the mom is a stay-at-home mom.

Being laid off before Christmas is terrible. I said to myself, we’re selling our house and it’s a good time to downsize all my Christmas things.” The Brothers took out an ad in the local paper and have had a pretty good response, raising almost $1,000 for this young family. Betty says they plan to have the sale one more day—Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at their home on 7004 First Street. She is hoping they will get an even bigger and better turnout to help the family even more. Most of the Christmas items can be had by donation. With over 150 items, there is sure to be something for everyone. “My husband was a cabinet

minister and used to get a lot of gifts so he had this picture of Kootenay Lake that someone bought for $250,” she said. “That really helped.” In fact, her husband Don was a MLA for Rossland-Trail for five terms from 1958-1972. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Mines and Petroleum Resources and as Minister of Education. He also served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Don and Betty have been married for 15 years and came to Grand Forks eight years ago. “He traveled the world,” said Betty. “It’s amazing the amount of stuff he’s accumulated over the years; gifts of all kinds.”

What’s the process for doing a winter forecast?

First, we are continuously tracking weather and ocean water temperature patterns around the world. We are looking for signs that current patterns will continue or change as we go into the next season and beyond. In addition, we use computer models which are produced by weather services around the world. These models have limited success in predicting how large scale patterns around the world will develop and change during the weeks and months ahead. Understanding the patterns and how they should evolve is critical to being successful. The models will often disagree with each other or come up with forecasts that does not make sense meteorologically and we need to be able to recognize those errors. – find out more at www.theweathernetwork.com

Granby Road reopens CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Emcon has finished work on Granby Road from 3 to 3.7 kilometre (old dam site) for the winter and the road is now open to all traffic. Emcon was blasting rock near the road in order to widen it. In a press release, Emcon stated that the rock proved to be harder than anticipated which delayed the completion date. “This safety improvement was required due to the setting of the road base and with the increase to industrial traffic there was a need for better sight distance and road width,” said the release. The project, which started Nov. 2, was expected to be finished Nov. 20 but ended up going over a week. Ken Lawson, Kootenay Boundary di-

vision manager for Emcon, told the Gazette on Monday that the blasting ended up going until Nov. 27. “It opened up on Friday,” he said. “It’ll be open right up until spring when we’ll be able to pave and carry on with the work. We expected to be done the week before last but we extended it until Nov. 27. It’s hard to tell how long it will take until you get into it.” Emcon is partnering with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure on the project, which is expected to be completed next spring with the final stage of road alignment and paving. “In the spring time we will be repaving that section of the road and adding other guard rails,” said Lawson. “With the logging trucks and everything coming through, it was a little tight.”

A truly sad ending

A bear cub wandering around downtown Grand Forks Monday afternoon drew quite a crowd. It’s not every day you get to see a bear up close—it was as cute as a stuffed toy! It was small and frightened and made onlookers say “Awww!” and want to pick it up and protect it. Whether its a bear or a deer or any other wildlife, its hard not to become attached immediately. Unfortunately, the story had a sad ending as the cub had to be euthanized. Without a mom and living on garbage, it was likely to starve or be taken out by predators. Just like people, they are trying to eat and survive. In most cases, the animals will go where the food is attainable and plentiful. If people don’t secure their garbage and leave unpicked fruit on trees, the deer, bears and cougars will come. As they say, a fed animal is a dead animal. Once these animals become used to eating handouts and garbage, they will keep coming back. No one can say Conservation Officer Dave Webster has an easy job. There are precautions that we can all take to make sure another bear doesn’t become dependant on garbage, likely to face a death sentence if caught. Being bear smart is everyone’s job, so that Dave Webster doesn’t have to do the toughest part of his.

On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY Hard to believe that Christmas is less than a month away. It’s never too early to stress about what to get far away relatives you only see once or twice a year. At least with guys I have some clue on what they might like but for my nieces, while they’re all off to university and so it’s a bit of a mystery. For my mom, while I see her more often but I’m still clueless when it comes to Christmas. I may go with gift cards for my nieces. At least I just have to narrow it down to one store. That’s a little easier than they can pick what they like. My mom likes knitting, puzzles and British mystery shows on PBS so hopefully I can figure something out. Speaking of British mystery

shows on PBS, I always find it interesting how my mom screams whenever the violent (and usually off-screen) murder takes place. This happens on each and every one of these shows so I don’t know how it can be a surprise. Since getting Optik TV with Netflix and HBO, she has opened up her programming a bit. When my dad was around he ran the electronics like a dictator. Heaven forbid if someone tried to change the channel when hockey or golf was on. With a little help, Mom has become quite adept at both the computer and the television. She is now able to check email, banking, weather and her favourite news sites with relative ease on her tablet computer. Managing all the channels with Optik TV is a breeze and Mom is a whiz now. She’s still a little reluctant to use the PVR (personal video recorder). This is my favourite feature of my TV experience. I would die without being able to

tape Walking Dead and Game of Thrones to watch 30 minutes later at my own leisure. I just have to remember not to go on any social media until I watch. People just love to put spoilers up. I guess it’s natural to want to discuss a show after watching it and share your experience. All it takes is for someone to write OMG and if I know they watch Walking Dead for example I can assume a favourite character has died. So then I’ll watch the episode thinking: is this the scene where they die? What about now? Annoying to say the least. Anyways, back to Mom and her TV. While the menu has the OnDemand channels right there next to the other channels. No having to go to another menu. It’s convenient too that almost all the episodes of many great shows are available. I’ve even got Mom watching some of my favourite HBO shows like Boardwalk Empire and The Knick. She loves the period costumes and

sets, both of which both shows do very well. Boardwalk Empire is set mostly in Atlantic City in the 1920s and is about gangsters and their attempts to bootleg liquor. It features real-life gangsters such as Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. The Knick, as I have written about before, is about a New York hospital at the turn of the century. One new Netflix show I have started watching is Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which is about a superhero living in New York. Superhero might be a misnomer. She has superpowers but she also has anxiety issues and a drinking problem. Those issues stem from her battles with the big bad villain, a (at least early in season one) mostly unseen telepath who can control people’s minds. His victims, including Jones, are often abused in horrible ways. As much as anything, this show shows how someone who

Opinion

We must not let ourselves fall prey to fear Dinner needs coordinators Letters

to the editor

Editor, The Gazette: I would like to put a call out for coordinators for the Community Christmas Dinner. We are so thankful for all the people that volunteer on Dec. 24 and 25, without them we would not be able to have this wonderful event, BUT we also need coordinators. A lot of work goes into putting this event on, starting the beginning of November with one last meeting in January—not a big commitment. I always like to say we go fast and furious for a

couple of months and then that’s it for the rest of the year. Last year we had five key people move out of town and a couple more not available this year, so we are a pretty thin group sitting around the planning table with everyone picking up the slack. We need more people now and next year for sure. Our main concern is our kitchen coordinators, they have indicated that they may not be available next year (they have been doing it for five years) so if some-

one was interested in this position they could come on board this year to get the feel of the kitchen. That would be ideal with another set of chefs, they could alternately have Christmas with their families. This is the 34th year but the future is looking shaky without more help with the planning of it. If anyone would like to discuss the dinner you are welcome to call myself at 250-442-2689 or Linda Lane at 250-442-2207. Paula Wolkosky, Grand Forks

Editor, the Gazette: Prior to the call for the federal election, the British Columbia Federation of Labour had begun a campaign to raise the minimum wage in B.C. to $15 per hour. The South Okanagan Boundary Labour Council is wholly supportive of this initiative. The provincial Liberals did, recently, increase the minimum wage by 20¢ an hour or a total of $1.60 per day. The present minimum wage is now $10.45. The government also said they would tie annual increases to the cost of living increases year over year. Unfortunately, all this does

is institutionalize poverty in our province by ensuring that there will never be an opportunity for the minimum wage to actually become a living wage. In the central Okanagan, a living wage for a family of four is in the $16 to $18 range. A living wage is defined as a wage that would position working families at a level just above the poverty line. It is time, if we are going to attract and hold on to young working families, to increase the minimum wage closer to, if not actually to a living wage. It’s time for employers in our region to step up to the

plate and recognize that having workers in servitude positions is unacceptable. If an employer is unable to afford at least the $15 minimum wage level then that employer should not be hiring workers but operating their businesses on their own. The labour council invites workers in our region who are not earning a living wage to work with us to convince the provincial government to make this necessary increase to the minimum wage. News from Parliament Hill has been overshadowed in the past two weeks by news of tragic events in Beirut, Paris and Mali. The terrorists that carried out these attacks may have had different local political goals, but they had one overarching aim in mind—to sow fear. And here in Canada the fear generated by these mass killings, especially those in Paris, has led some to question the plans to welcome thousands of Syrian refugees to Canada. We must not let ourselves fall prey to this fear. We must continue to open our hearts From the hill and our communities to these people who have suffered so greatly and risked so much in leav- RICHARD CANNINGS ing their homes. They will have been screened at multiple levels by the UN High Commission on Refugees and the Canadian government, and initial plans are to bring in women, children and families. I have heard from all sides on this debate, but the overwhelming majority of messages I receive are very positive, including several requests for information on how to privately sponsor refugees. My colleague Nathan Cullen has put together a concise guide on sponsoring refugees on his website, so for more information go to: http://nathancullen.ndp.ca/refugees. Last week I was given the roles of Critic for Post-Secondary Education and Deputy Critic for Natural Resources. These are interesting and important portfolios with direct pertinence to this riding. During the campaign I met with the presidents of both Okanagan College and Selkirk College to better understand the issues they face in providing appropriate and affordable education. I also heard from many students who face increasing tuition costs and crushing student debt burdens. Since most jobs now require some form of post-secondary education, we need to ensure that young people can quickly join the workforce with the right skills. And natural resources—forestry and mining—are also critical to the economy of South Okanagan-West Kootenay, from the smelter in Trail, the pulp mill in Castlegar, to forestry operations and mines throughout the riding. Issues are similar across Canada, and I look forward to working with industry leaders and land managers to find the policies that bring the greatest benefits to Canadians in developing these resources while protecting the natural environment. On Monday I was officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for South Okanagan-West Kootenay. I’ll be in Ottawa for the next three weeks, setting up my office here and attending the House after it opens on Dec. 3. While work in Ottawa keeps me busy now, I realize that my important work as an MP is in my riding. I have finalized plans for two offices that will open shortly. The Penticton office will be at 202-301 Main Street, where local MP offices have been for many years. The Castlegar office will be in the Century 21 building at 1695A Columbia Avenue. It will take time to get these offices furnished and have the phones and Internet working, but in the meantime please contact me by email at: Richard Cannings, newly-elected Member of Parliament for South Okanagan-West Kootenay, was sworn in on Richard.Cannings@ Parliament Hill on Nov. 23 with a clerk of the House of parl.gc.ca. Winter tires required POLICE BRIEFS By Craig Lindsay

Vehicle rifled through On Nov. 23 at 12:30 p.m., a report was received that unknown persons had gone through a vehicle which was parked at a residence on Como Road. “It appears nothing was taken,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz of the Grand Forks RCMP detachment. “The vehicles were left unlocked.”

Car with no winter tires hits rock face On Nov. 23 at 4:21 p.m., there was a collision on Highway 3 near Eholt Summit. “The driver of the vehicle was not injured,” said Lanz. “It appears a brown Subaru had lost control and had ran into the rock face. A check of the vehicle determined the tires weren’t adequate for winter roads.” The driver, a 34-year-old male, received a violation ticket for failing to obey a traffic sign (must have good winter tires beyond this point).

Man breaks curfew On Nov. 25 at 2:36 a.m., police observed a male on the side of Highway 3 by 68th Avenue. “The male was identified by police as having been known to be on curfew conditions—to be in his residence between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.,” said Lanz. “The male was arrested and following a search, some methamphetamines were located in his possession. The male was held for

court.” The male is a 55-year-old resident of Grand Forks. Theft of tires

On Nov. 26 at 8:15 p.m., RCMP received a call about a theft of a set of winter tires. “The tires were stolen from a business on Donaldson Drive,” said Lanz. The matter is still under investigation. Theft of prescriptions

On Nov. 26 at 1:13 p.m., police were advised of a theft of some prescriptions. “The male had taken the prescription into Overwaitea to have it filled,” said Lanz. “The prescription was not returned to the owner. The male who had it filled was arrested for breach of conditions as he was on conditions not to go into Overwaitea.” The male, a 50-year-old from Grand Forks, has been released to appear in court at a later date. Inebriated male causes disturbance at BETHS

On Nov. 29 at 8:10 p.m., police responded to a call of a male causing a disturbance at BETHS extreme weather shelter. “Police attended and spoke to the male, who appeared to be intoxicated,” said Lanz. “The male was arrested and was lodged in cells for the evening for being drunk and causing a disturbance.” The male is a 38-year-old from Kelowna

Submitted to the Gazette

A final women’s only drum circle was held to mark the completion of the one-year Hear Our Voices Project.

The Boundary Métis Community Association, in partnership with Boundary All Nationas Aboriginal Council and the Women’s Coalition, completed their oneyear Hear Our Voices Project on Nov. 21 with a final women’s only drum circle and a community pot luck dinner. All the community was invited to the event to hear about the successes of the project and celebrate the project. The purpose of the Giving Voice Project, which was funded in part by the Ministers Advisory Council for Aboriginal Women, was to support community groups and organizations to bring Aboriginal women and girls together in a safe environment to give voice to issues of violence and abuse within their lives, their families and communities, as well as learn from stories of resilience and strength. In the Boundary we partnered with other agencies to bring women, girls and community together to receive information on violence and abuse while receiving cultural teachings. A drum-making workshop was held

with medicine wheel teachings, traditional ceremonies, drum/talking circles, public speaking workshops and a “In Her Shoes Community Session.” A total of 23 events were held with a total attendance of 219 people not counting the Women’s Memorial March held in February. Some of the things we learned is that there are great resources locally for men and women that already address the issue of violence in our community. We have learned more about the resources and how to access them and intend to share them during our ongoing events. We learned that the Transition House will take phone calls from women, men and children and put them in touch with the right agency or person to help. This is key, because they are staffed 24 hours a day and confidentiality is guaranteed. We also learned about provincial resources launched on social media that were launched over the past year. If you are a victim or you know a victim of domestic violence please regard, and get help immediately—http://saysomethingbc.ca/ or Tweet #saysomething.

After six and a half years in Grand Forks, the top cop in town is retiring. The last day for Cpl. Richard Lanz, who has been with the RCMP for a total of 34 years, will be Jan. 15. Replacing Lanz as the operational non-commissioned officer (NCO) in Grand Forks will be Cpl. Philip Crack. Lanz has also filled the role of detachment supervisor in Grand Forks and Midway since Sgt. Jim Harrison transferred to Kelowna last spring. “I’m passing the torch to somebody else,” said Lanz. “I’ve enjoyed my time here and we plan on staying.” After graduating from the RCMP training depot in Regina, Sask. Lanz came to B.C. in 1982 where he started his career in Kimberley. After that, Lanz’s career took him around the province to Tumbler Ridge, Armstrong, Valemount, Ashcroft and Burns Lake before coming to Grand Forks. Although each community had its own charm, Lanz likes Grand Forks and the Boundary and plans to stay here in retirement with his wife. “The weather is fabulous,” he said. “You’ve got lots going on. You’ve got the lake nearby. You’ve got golf courses. It’s people friendly.

Like I said, the weather is great, especially after being up north for so long.” Lanz doesn’t have many specific plans for retirement other than to “enjoy life.” “Camping, fishing, golfing, sightseeing,” he said. “We’d like to go see the kids more often.” They do plan on taking a trip across Canada in the near future. “We haven’t seen Eastern Canada so that was our plan upon retirement,” he said. “We want to hook on the trailer and go.” Lanz has enjoyed all the different aspects of police work and he figures he has dealt with pretty much almost everything. “I’ve been involved with everything from shoplifting to homicides,” he said. “I’ve been in charge in several detachments in an acting capacity over my years of service. I’ve enjoyed the whole aspect of it. You get to deal with people and everyone’s different; everybody’s personality is different. Doing the investigations some were a challenge and some were easy. Some investigations you had to dig a little deeper to come to a conclusion but it was all very interesting.” Being an RCMP officer means doing many different tasks, said Lanz. “Anywhere from stopping traffic to investigating homicides and interviewing peo-

Christmas Tales New corporal Songs and Stories from the First Christmas Friday, December 11 7:00 pm

Grand Forks Secondary School Auditorium Suggested donation of $10.00 each

Storyteller, Justyn Rees and singer/songwriter and musicians Russ Rosen and company join forces to deliver the songs and stories like you’ve never them heard before. A definite “Must See” this Christmas.

Christmas Tales will have you singing along with the traditional carols and inspired by some new ones. These songs form the musical backdrop for author and raconteur Justyn Rees’ hilarious and delightful retelling of the first Christmas. Christmas Tales is booked to play throughout the holiday season from Victoria to Edmonton and Gibsons to Nelson with stops in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. So, grab ahold of mom and dad and granny and the kids, load up the truck and head on down to Christmas Tales, it’ll be more fun than Christmas dinner!

ple,” he said. “We have different things here like the boat out at Christina Lake. So you get to go out and go on that. So you have many different things.” From early on, Lanz went into the RCMP wanting to help people. “I’ve enjoyed it, right to the last day,” he said. “Otherwise I wouldn’t be here.” Throughout his career Lanz has worked in small communities. As far as crime goes, Grand Forks is similar to the other places he has worked in. “I’m not a big city person,” said Lanz. “In the small community you don’t have the big city atmosphere and crime. We still have it up here but not on the scale of the big places. It was a little more challenging when I was in Burns Lake because we were dealing with a little different type of policing with the First Nations reserves. It can be a bit more violent.” A new staff sergeant is expected to arrive in Grand Forks in mid-January from New Aiyansh, B.C. That person would oversee the Grand Forks and Midway RCMP detachments. Sgt. Harrison now works out of the Kelowna RCMP detachment as an advisory NCO reporting to the chief superintendent. He acts as the district liaison with detachment commanders in the Kootenay Boundary region.

to go. “Grand Forks was definitely on my list of places we’d like to go so we could be closer to my folks who are in the Kamloops area,” he said. Crack started with the RCMP in 2000 and has been with the force for 11-1/2 years. He started in the training depot in Regina, moved on to Fort St. John and then over to Logan Lake. “Both of those were general duty similar to Grand Forks,” he said. Crack describes his policing method as being proactive. He believes in going out and finding problems while they occur rather than standing around waiting for a call. “The integrated road safety unit I was involved with was proactive,” he said. “We went out and found things. It was very effective. For the unit, we were averaging 20-

Continued from page 1

30 impaired a year with two members on the road as well as many other associated problems with driving, drug trafficking and things like that.” There were many issues in and around Terrace that Crack and his colleagues had to deal with, mainly around major industrial projects such as various pipelines. “Everyone’s heard of Enbridge and natural gas pipelines going through the area,” he said. “Because it’s this main central hub for that, there is a lot of money and an influx of outside workers who have no ties to the community. With no real interest in the community, they didn’t really care what happened to the community; not like here where everyone seems very invested in the community.” Crack said that Grand Forks

is similar to other same-size communities in that police deal with break and enters, assaults, impaired drivers. “I understand summer gets very busy with, again, the influx of people from outside the area who have no investment in the area. They don’t really care what they do because, ‘hey, I’m never going to see these people again.’” Crack will take over from Cpl. Lanz as the Operational NCO for the Grand Forks detachment. “I’ll be in charge of the operational side of the detachment,” he said. “I’ll be monitoring the investigations and making sure they’re done in a timely and accurate manner and that we cover all the bases. I’ll deal with Crown Counsel and other agencies. I’ll be the face-to-face contact person for the RCMP here.”

According to a survey by the library, people are generally pleased with the library although some were unaware of many services they offer. The recent survey initiated by the Grand Forks and District Public Library was a big success Library Director Cari Lynn Postnikoff went over the preliminary results of the survey for the board at the library board meeting on Nov. 25. “This response is crazy for the size of the community,” she said. “That’s a lot. I would’ve been really happy with 100. We managed to convince 16 people who don’t use the library ever to use the survey.” Postnikoff said the demographics of the survey were: 167 Grand Forks residents, 61 Christina Lake residents, as well as five part-timers from each, and the rest were non-residents. Most of the respondents (60 per cent) were over 55; 38 were aged 40-54; 31 were 26-40; 10 were 19-39; and 11 were under 18. “For those who don’t use the library, we had some consistent themes with number one being: everything is online,” said Postnikoff. “Other people buy all their books, the library doesn’t have anything they’re interested in. A lot of them are worried about overdues so maybe we should advertise that we don’t have fines and that you can renew your books.” Survey participants said they were more likely to use the library if they

The Fun Spot

had more free time; if they had a specific research need; and if the library had specific types of programming. “The takeaways are that we need better advertising for programs than we actually have here,” said Postnikoff. “It is noteable that as far as the non-users go, all except one labelled the library as important or extremely important to the community. So they think it should be here, even if they don’t come here.” Postnikoff added that people overall were very happy with the library’s customer service. She also said people wanted to see the library open on Mondays and opening at 9 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. “So if we can find the money and make the case to the RDKB that we need to be open on these days and times, that would be good,” she said. “All in all, we need better advertising for things other than our books. People know we have books they don’t know about pretty much anything else.” The results of the survey will be used by the board and staff for strategic planning. The library also held a draw at the board meeting for those participating in the library survey: L. Barg won a $25 gift certificate from Jogas, while Ann Wolfram who a $25 gift certificate from Thistle Pot Gifts. Other issues the library were focussing on at the time included the recently completed lighting project. Postnikoff told the board that the installation went smooth and came in under the estimate of $20,000. Postnikoff said the new lighting has made a world

of difference in the library. “It felt like we had half the lights off before,” she said. The new lights are also expected to save the library over $2,000 in power expenses. Postnikoff reported that the library’s adult colouring program has been a rousing success with over 40 participants. In fact, the program was so successful the library is now putting on an adult colouring group. She also reported that the library was outreaching to Silver Kettle Village and would have a staff member read on site once a week The library board and staff are currently undertaking strategic planning for the library for the next five years. The report is expected to be presented at the library’s annual general meeting in March. The current strategic plan expires next year and the next plan will need to be adopted for 2016-2021 Postnikoff reported that the roof on the library had a leak last month. The leak was reported to the city, who owns the building, and was fixed shortly after. There was no damage to any books or other library equipment. The library board and staff are currently making plans for the 70th anniversary of the Grand Forks and District Public Library next year, and Postnikoff said she would like to see the board and staff plan a big event. “We’re in the brainstorming stage right now,” she said. “We’d like to have a big ‘do in the springtime and hopefully we’ll come up with something really good.”

The City’s asset management program has been in the works since 2011. It is a way for the City’s infrastructure assets to be replaced and maintained efficiently, sustainably and most importantly, in a fiscally responsible manner. The program is also a way to keep the cost of living in Grand Forks to a minimum. After all, that’s one of our City’s biggest draws! A system called Worktech is being used to help manage the asset management program and will be fully operational over the next year. City staff are undertaking extensive training to make the asset management program successful.

Wine tasting a pleasurable bombardment of the senses The Grand Forks Art Gallery Society’s 24th Annual Wine Tasting was a sell-out as usual, with 225 people vying for tickets to the prestigious event. Fourteen wineries and two breweries were represented this year, along with regional food and coffee presenters. Harpist Jennifer Fenn (below) performed upstairs of the beautifully decorated gallery, an historical building; a special thank you goes to Bill Fedoriw of Grand Forks, who donated some 50 hours to the gallery creating two vignettes for the stairwells. The event concluded with safe rides home offered by the grad class of 2016. Della Mallette photos

GRANBY ROAD CLOSURE

Emcon has now completed the rock blasting on the Granby Road. The rock proved to be harder than anticipated which delayed the completion date. This safety improvement was required due to the settling of the road base and with the increase to industrial traffic, there was a need for better sight distance and road width. Emcon’s partnering with BCMOTI should be completed next spring with the final stage of road alignment and paving through the “old dam site”. Emcon thanks those affected for their understanding and patience.

Grand Forks BMX Awarded BMX Club with the most growth in BC for 2015.

The 2015 Grand Forks BMX season was a huge success thanks to all the racers, parents, spectators and volunteers. BMX is a fun sport for all ages, as young as 2 years old showing us that the future of BMX is strong! We look forward and welcome everyone at the track next year. It could be you standing on the podium in 2016.

Thank you to all the sponsors and a big thank you to Peter Kalasz Photography for the great photo’s of the kids weekly races. ~ Grand Forks BMX committee ~

Christmas Seal campaign begins!

Michele Caskey (right), volunteer director for Grand Forks-Boundary Area of the B.C. Lung Association; Mayor Frank Konrad; and Marge Bekker, lung association committee member, kicked off the Christmas Seals campaign for Grand Forks on Thursday at City Hall. Craig Lindsay photo

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Christmas Seal Campaign began over 100 years ago to fight Tuberculosis (TB). This is the B.C. Lung Association’s biggest fundraiser for the year—already residents in the Grand Forks-Boundary area have received in the mail the Christmas Seal appeal letter. This has been delivered to known contributors and householders are delivered to attract new donors. The B.C. Lung Association had a strong presence at the Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair in September. On Clean Air Day, the first week in June, the association manned a booth at Overwaitea and gave out relevant material on clean air, and free cake. In the spring Grand Forks-Boundary Area director Michele Caskey participated in an International Conference on Lungs and Heart in Vancouver. Recently she did a presentation at the Slavonic Senior Citizens’ Hall.

Health education materials, such as non-smoking information, are provided by the B.C Lung Association and made available to the health units, Boundary Hospital, Mental Health and Addiction Centre and Boundary Women’s Centre, and to the schools and businesses in District 51. Of benefit to those attempting to quit smoking is the online program quitnow.ca and the toll free number is 1-877-455-2233. Both services are free of charge and are available 24/7. The State of The Air Report 2015 was distributed around the Boundary. There is an abundance of material about lung-related diseases and information on environmental concerns such as open burning, wood burning stoves and health and air quality, and radon gas. The publicity for the campaign involves distributing placemats, bookmarks and Christmas Seals throughout

cub in and it was eventually put down. “I was able to catch it with a snare and put it in a dog crate,” said Webster. “It left that tree (in the alley by the laundromat) and went back to the dumpster. There was some garbage spread around. It was completely habituated on garbage.” Webster said the cub was very undersized and had to be euthanized. He said the cub should have been with its mother and learning how to survive. “He’s a cub of this year so he should be with a mother,” said Webster. “He hasn’t been with a sow for three months. This time of the year the sow would have him denned up. He doesn’t know what to do. I could have done what I did or he could’ve gradually starved to death eating out of people’s dumpsters in downtown Grand Forks. That was the option.” Webster said that sending the cub to a rehabilitation centre (such as Northern Lights in Smithers) would not be a viable solution either. “They call them rehab centres but they take them and feed them for six months to a year and then they let them go and they end up causing problems somewhere else,” he said. “We had two bears recently rehabbed, and I use that term loosely, in the Vernon/ Kelowna area released and they had to be put down almost immediately after being released because they were trying to break into people’s homes.” Webster added that he had had several other complaints of the same cub trying to get to garbage and chewing on door frames and access buildings. Webster said that this has been a difficult year for bears with the fires and the drought. “We had a bad year for them,” he said. “When you get these bears that have been orphaned, they’re just trying to make it as best they can. Without mom there to look after them and feed them, they have a rough road ahead.”

In last week’s Grand Forks Gazette, a story on the Grand Forks Curling Club had an error. It was not the city that took ownership of the rink; it was, in fact, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. The Gazette apologizes for the error.

Grand Forks Gazette

Let’s put a book under every tree SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Every year this generous community donates new and gently used books for the Community Christmas Hamper Program, and this year is no exception to that rule. Let’s continue to put a book under every tree! Sheila Dobie, community literacy coordinator, describes the program. “This year we will have donation boxes at Selkirk College, the swimming pool, and both of the elementary schools. Look for the decorated boxes and the sign for “Let’s put a Book Under Every Tree.” All of the donations will be given to the Christmas Hamper program. Families that receive a hamper also get a gift of books

appropriate for the ages of all the family members. Columbian Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) has been running this donation program for 10 years or more and welcome used book donations any time of the year. Dobie added, “Books are given away at all of the community events we attend or host, so gently used book donations are always welcome. They can be dropped off at Selkirk College, with sincere thanks!” For more information on the community literacy programs in the Boundary, visit the CBAL website, cbal.org, or find us on Facebook—Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy–Boundary, or call Dobie at 250-584-4109.

Anna Bach shows off one of the donation boxes. There are four locations: at Selkirk College, the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre and at both elementary schools.

Bruins slip down to fourth place CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

After winning an impressive six games in a row, the Grand Forks Border Bruins have crashed back down to earth. The Bruins have lost three of their last four games and have slipped back down to fourth place in the KIJHL Neil Murdoch Division. On Saturday, the Bruins travelled over the pass to face the Rebels of Castlegar, falling 4-1. Mike Bhatoa opened up the scoring

for the host team in the first but Chad Grambo was able to tie the game for the Bruins two minutes later. The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the third period when Castlegar scored three unanswered power play goals to put the game away. The week before, on Nov. 22, GF lost 5-2 on the road in Summerland with Shayne Pluto and Trey Mason scoring the only Bruin goals. On Nov. 21 the Bruins once again beat Beaver Valley by a 3-2 score for the third time in a row.

GF won the game at home with Dylan Haney scoring in overtime. The Bruins had built a 2-0 lead after one period with goals from Garret Brisebois and Josh Hammett but the Nitehawks stormed back with two quick goals late in the second period from Braden Fuller and Jaxon Joseph to send the game to overtime. Heading into December, the Bruins will look to get back on track with two inter-divisional home games against Spokane on Thursday and Nelson on Dec. 8.

Midgets lose shoot-out final in Trail JEFF HOLITZKI

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks Midget Bruins just missed winning back-to-back tournaments when they lost a 2-1 shoot-out final in the Trail midget tournament this past weekend.

The Bruins took a 1-1-1 pool record into the semi-final where they defeated Castlegar #3 6-2 on Sunday morning. Three periods and five minutes of overtime in the evenly-matched championship game solved nothing before West Kelowna snipers won the gold in the shoot-out. The Midget Bruins take their 4-0-1

league record back to Rossland this Saturday, when they face Trail #2. The Midget Bruins are looking forward to more exciting tournament hockey when we be hosting seven other midget teams in our home tournament on Jan. 22-24, 2016. Mark your calendars!

Brian “Gilly” Gillmor Brian “Gilly” Gillmor died suddenly at the age of 66 on November 19, 2015. He will be sorely missed. Gilly was loyal, kind, strong, and a man of few words. When he loved you, he loved you hard. Gilly’s mechanical skills were legendary and nothing he couldn’t fix. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughters Deborah and Robin, his son Adam, daughter-in-law Holly and grandson Phoenix. Gilly grew up in Seattle, WA. As a member of Seattle Chapter DeMolay, when he assumed the Master Counselor position, Nancy was voted his Chapter Sweetheart. He and Nancy married and moved to Grand Forks in 1973 to design and build their oneof-a-kind home with the help of many good friends. Gilly was a member of Phoenix Mountain Ski Society for many years and was known for his love of telemark skiing and epic wipeouts. He worked for Greenpeaks Holdings as a silviculture supervisor and became a treasured member of the family and a mentor to many. When he retired ten years ago he delved into his lifetime loves of photography and golf. He indulged the resident birds and squirrels in their peanut addictions. In the summer he and Nancy went on trips to watch the Spokane Indians baseball team and take pictures of Stubbs the donkey for annual albums. “Gilly’s Gathering” was held on Friday, November 27, 2015 to celebrate this life. Flowers are always welcome. Donations can be made in Brian’s name to a charity of your choice. Thank you for your outpouring of Love & Support in this Gillmor family time of shock and bereavement.

Loresa Ann Makonin

Loresa Ann Makonin age 49, of Halifax passed away due to a tragic accident on October 7, 2015. Loresa was born and raised in Grand Forks, B.C.; she was the daughter of the late Lucille (Lucy) Makonin and Henry Soviskov. Loresa enjoyed many sports and outdoor activities from track to softball while attending high school. Her love of the outdoors continued throughout her life. She hiked, canoed and was an avid cyclist. She would bike everywhere, no matter the weather. Upon high school graduation in 1983 Loresa enrolled at Washington State University (1984) studying Sports Management. During her time at university she was a member of the University Rowing Team and also enjoyed deejaying at a local radio station. Loresa graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education on May 7, 1988. Loresa worked briefly in Kananaskis, Alberta managing a hotel recreation pool and fitness centre before moving to Halifax to pursue her creative side. She enrolled at NSCAD and set off driving across Canada on her own to Nova Scotia. She fell in love with Art College (graduating with a Fine Arts degree in 1994) and the city of Halifax. She continued her love of the arts painting and sketching while employed at the Marriott Harbourfront for the past 21 years. A number of her pieces hang in Halifax businesses. Loresa had a positive impact on the many friends and colleagues while working and living in Halifax. She had a love and passion for Jamaica, visiting it for two months each year. During her trips to Jamaica she made lasting friendships with people from all over the world who will undoubtedly miss her. Loresa treasured her jazz and reggae music, and recently became totally immersed in singing with a choir. She was a soft-spoken artistic adventurist with a great sense of humour who loved her two cats, Pickle and Trinket. She will be missed. Loresa is survived by her sisters, Debbie (Doug) MacGillivray of Calgary, Alberta, Rebecca (Richard) Lowes of Red Deer, Alberta, and brother, Roger (Donna) Soviskov of Grand Forks, BC, and loving nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. The family would like to thank everyone for their condolences. In honour of our sister A Celebration of Life will be held May 22, 2016 at Omega Restaurant.

Hopeful to see Syrian refugees in Boundary The Syrian refugee crisis has been z View From in the news now for months. With the The Pulpit bombings in Paris by ISIS extremists, some are now having security concerns Rick Steingard, about allowing those refugees to come King of Kings to Canada. Church, The Canadian government has reMidway cently announced that not all 25,000 refugees will be in Canada by Dec. 31, but should arrive by the end of February. Most will come from UN refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The UN High Commission on Refugees will help screen the refugees, with Canadian authorities and CSIS doing additional screening. Why allow immigration? If you live here, your ancestors have somehow immigrated to Canada. Even for First Nations people, their ancestors were the first to live here after migrating from Asia. My grandparents were part of a Mennonite migration from Southern Russia to Canada in 1924. They came with eight children, ages 2 to 16. My grandparents wanted a better place to live for their children and future grandchildren, than war-torn, post-revolutionary Russia. I am grateful they came! We take for Similarly, last year I found my great-great-grandfather’s granted freedoms name in a book describing and opportunities that Mennonite migration to Rusmany in this world sia in the early 1800s. Heinrich Steingard migrated in 1817— only dream of enjoying. there were four in the family and they had no money. The entry then listed what was given or lent to them to start a new life on a farm. They had left Prussia because of religious persecution. Immigration has helped make Canada what it is today. Yet we take for granted freedoms and opportunities that many in this world only dream of enjoying. If we are able to share with a Syrian family, then great! This is neighbours helping neighbours on a global scale. One aspect of “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress” (James 1:27a, NIV). In Matt 25, Jesus commends those that follow him, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matt 25:35-36, NIV). I am encouraged to hear that the Catholic Church in Osoyoos is taking the lead to sponsor a family. So is the Catholic Church in Oliver. A family arrived in Summerland in March and another in Kelowna in May that was sponsored by some United churches. Those are a few local stories that I know about. I am part of a group in the West Boundary that is investigating the possibility of bringing some refugees here. We are only at the initial stage: researching requirements, asking Carol passed peacefully in Hardy View Lodge questions and evaluin Grand Forks on November 21 at the age of ating resources. One 84. She will be lovingly remembered by her of the biggest queshusband Pete, children Linda, Fred and June, as tions for me is, “How well as by her many grandchildren, great-grandwill the Syrians fit children, nieces and nephews. into small town rural Sincere thanks to the caring staff at Hardy B.C.?” Finding a good View Lodge, Boundary Hospital and Phoenix match will be imporManor, as well as to all of the friends and family tant. for their support. There will be no services held If you are interested at this time. in helping bring some Syrian refugees to the Boundary, contact me at kokca@shaw.ca, or 250-449-2252. Thanks.
