This year’s campaign is raising funds for regional and community health programs with a fundraising goal to raise $150,000 to light 17 large stars ($5,000 per star) and 24 small stars ($2,500 per star). These programs are dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and more or for those that may require help with chronic disease management, home nursing, in-home oxygen, wound,

senior, pediatric and self-care programs. More often than not these programs have smaller equipment needs. However the impact those pieces of equipment and patient education tools can deliver through these programs can often help people who wouldn’t have had anywhere else to turn to for assistance. We all know life can change in an instant; it is comforting to know that donations made to EKFH will have a direct impact on the care available right here at home. Your donation plays a

crucial role in EKFH’s mission to provide funding for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community facilities in complementing the health care needs of the region. Making a donation and spreading the word about our activities and the work we do will go a long way towards making a difference for your health, your family, your our friends, your hospital and the health care facilities in your community. Annual Chamber Turkey Drive culminates this Thursday

Photo submitted

With a small donation, you can help a family this Christmas. The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce has launched their annual Turkey Drive. Working in support of the Cranbrook Food Bank and the Salvation Army the Chamber is raising funds to support the Christmas Hamper Program. The Turkey Drive will culminate with a fun day Thursday December 3 with a final all-out effort to reach this year’s goal of $28,000 There is a need this year for over 750 Christmas Hampers in Cranbrook. The average Christmas hamper costs $85.00 for a total of $64,000. In its sixth year the Turkey Drive has raised over $130,000 to help these two vital local agencies support families in our community. “We are working to ensure that everyone has a Christmas dinners,” said Jason Wheeldon, 2015 Turkey Driver chair. “A donation of a turkey, or turkeys, can make such a difference. The need is year round but is especially poignant at this time of year. The Chamber Turkey Drive has grown into the largest contributor to the local hamper program from humble roots when a local community agency put a call out to the business community when they did not have sufficient resources to fill the hamper program. Staff and volunteers of the Chamber sprang to action phoning Chamber members and within 4 hours had raised the money to ensuring families would receive a hamper that year. The 2015 Turkey Drive has begun online and with celebrity pledgers working to ensure the program is a success. “Our Little Pluckers as

we like to call them are well known and gregarious business people who are hugely instrumental to our success,” said Chief Turkey Chair Wheeldon. The Little Pluckers have been actively soliciting donations and the Chamber website has been set up this year to allow people the ease to make their contributions on line. Wheeldon says the goals could not be obtained without the work of the Little Pluckers. “The Pluckers are out beating the bushes for turkeys and their efforts are really appreciated as we would not have anywhere near the success without their help.” The Chamber Turkey Drive ensures, with the support of our community, that all families in need can receive a Christmas Hamper. There are hundreds of stories like this each year of appreciation for the assistance received from the hamper program. “It was the 22nd of December 2012. There was a knock at the door, I answered it and no one was there. I ran over to the window, leaving the door open, trying to see out the front window to see who had just been there. I saw tail lights. I walked back over to the door. There was a box. A box wrapped around the outside with gift wrap. A box which, once I looked into it, there was a turkey, a hand full of potatoes, a freezer bag of carrots, a can of corn, a can of cranberry jelly, a pack of gravy four homemade buns and a box of stovetop. I won’t try to explain how it made me feel, I will simply say it did. It made me feel… Parts of me still wants to know who it was so

I can hug them” The Chamber really hopes the support

Hip replacement and back pain

For most people, total joint replacement reduces pain, improves mobility and makes life worth living again after years pain and limitation. For some, however, joint replacement is the beginning of a new type of pain that continues to limit and restrict quality of life. One can only imagine the disappointment this must bring after anticipating the replacement taking pain away. One of the most common complications of this type relates to total hip replacement and low back pain. Studies estimate that 10-30% of people who get total hip replacement have low back pain start within one year postoperatively when they had no history of back pain prior to the replacement. This is such a common complication that it has inspired a number of studies examining the issue. In some cases, hip replacement aggravates a previous low back pain condition. It is also true that many people with hip degeneration have low back pain that is alleviated with the total hip replacement. For those people who have had low back pain aggravated or caused by total hip replacement treating the surgical scar may yield surprisingly good results. During hip replacement a 3 to 9 inch incision is made over the hip. This incision necessarily cuts through cutaneous nerves and a very

important structure called the fascia. Fascia is a connective tissue sheath that covers and holds together many of our body structures. It is not unlike a body stocking that covers your entire body under the skin. It also connects muscle to bone (tendons are considered part of the fascial system) and bone to bone (ligaments are also part of this system). The fascia surrounds and holds organs and wraps bones. Healthy fascia slides easily under the skin and serves as a slick surface that allows the structures it wraps to move freely. Cutting through the fascia creates scar tissue that can bind the fascia, preventing healthy slipping and movement. This binding can then cause tension to form on surrounding tissues not unlike how pulling on one side of a spider web distorts the opposite side of the web. Binding at the site of a scar, as in hip replacement, can then cause a pulling tension through the fascia from the hip to the low back resulting in chronic low back pain. This binding process can occur with any scar. If you have low back pain starting after hip replacement (or any pain that came on after having surgery) the cause may be due to the effect of the incision on the fascia. Treating the scar can help free the fascia, heal the cutaneous nerves and give significant pain relief.

(From left) Alec Earp-Haggard, Rene Kowalchuk, Simon Wachon, Jennifer –Leigh Wachon and Dan McGifford. Wednesday the 25th of November marked a very important date in the lives of four students at Evolution Martial Arts on 7th Ave South in Cranbrook. A culmination of years of Traditional Tae KwonDo training came to a crossroads in its journey to see JenniferLeigh Wachon, Rene Kowalchuk, and Alec Earp-Haggard not only reach their goal of 2nd degree Black Belt, but I had the privilege as their instructor and examiner to watch them “own” the experience. This was a transition only toppled by watching the look on Daniel (San) McGifford’s face as he reached that very special moment of achieving his 1st Degree Black Belt—because nothing really in the Martial Arts World can compare to that feeling of joy as you reach out and grasp your very first Black Belt.

The students, who are all also instructors at the club are taught that holding a Black Belt in the true spirit of Martial Arts, doesn’t mean you’re invincible, or better than anyone else, but it does shape their bodies, minds and souls into a deeper understanding of everything, and over time, belief in themselves to strive to overcome whatever life tries to throw at them. I was amazed at how each student had grown in confidence and ability since I started teaching them many years ago and even more amazed at how they had brought together many of the junior grade students in the club to perform amazing “stunts” while being knocked, kicked and thrown around during each self defence routine. They all participated with enthusiasm and with the happiest of hearts

to bring some awesome drama and several comical interventions to the “Dojang” (training hall) while keeping everyone safe from injury. Sparring is always exciting and during a Black Belt testing it is always lifted to higher level with the day being no exception. As chief instructor, I am not interested in how one person can inflict injury on another, so the students are taught from the top down that it is not important to be the toughest or best, it is only important to help each other grow in skills, confidence and fighting ability. That way, everyone grows together, and by utilizing a spirit of taking care of each cooperation and taking care of each other, injury is kept to a minimum, and long term training can be achieved for everyone, for as long as they like— after all, there are no limits, except the ones we impose on ourselves! I am Jennifer’s father as well as her instructor so I was filled with pride to see my youngest daughter’s performance and it also brought back memories of her and her oldest sister Joanne getting their first degrees and even before that, her older sister Cayleigh-Marie testing for second and

third degree. Jenny started at age five, and also gave up early on for many years, so it was wonderful to see her do well and get back into it in her late teens. I remember when Rene started with the Cranbrook club joining with his daughter Rhiannon just to get her interested in something, and here he is five years later inspiring Rhiannon and the others in the club to keep on going and achieve their goals. To see Alec get his 2nd degree Black Belt is also a pleasure as he was one of the very first students to step inside the doors of our Dojang in Cranbrook with 100% attendance over the first three years, week in and week out. So having spent almost a year out of training due to illness it was amazing to see him back with even more maturity and confidence, and a skill level to match. As for Dan getting his first Black Belt, being a father of five children who all train with us, he just inspired them to always try their hardest and do their best. It was a pleasure to see the transition from colour Belt to Black Belt and the joy from the achievement in his eyes. Excellent job everyone! ~Simon Wachon, Cranbrook

Letter: One month after the election Thank you to the 63,203 people who voted in the October 19, 2015 election. Almost 74% of eligible voters in Kootenay Columbia took that walk to the polls, which was amongst the highest in Canada! This election was an excellent example of how every vote counts, and it is an honor to serve you as your Member of Parliament. So what’s been happening in the first month? Starting out as a Member of Parliament is incredibly busy. One of the challenges is setting up offices – my plan is to have staff in Ottawa, Nelson and Cranbrook for January 4, 2016. This involves leasing new space and furnishing the offices with the recycled inventory used by the former MP as the furniture, computers, etc. are all owned by the House of Commons. I plan on having one staff person in Ottawa and four in the riding so that you get good service here at home! We are assigned office locations in Ottawa based on “standing,” so for this 42nd Session of Parliament Liberal MPs picked their offices first, Conservative MPs second, and we are in process of picking our offices now. The next update will include my Ottawa office information – even if we’re picking third it is an honor to have an office on Parliament Hill!

I also have to hire the staff. The NDP has unionized Constituency and Parliamentary Assistants and since we went from 103 seats to 44 in the election, there are several hundred qualified people in Ottawa who, under the contract, get the first opportunity to bid on the jobs both in Ottawa and across the country. That process is underway. The MP has to serve their constituents whether permanent staff is in place or not. In the last month I have attended meetings and events in Fernie, Cranbrook, Creston, Invermere, Nelson, Kaslo and Johnson’s Landing. There have been phone calls (250.919.9104) and emails (wayne. stetski@parl.gc.ca) and letters (PO Box 872, Cranbrook V1C 4J6 until January 1 and then send mail to Unit B – 111 7th Ave S, Cranbrook V1C 2J3) to answer. There have been about 100 letters so far including those waiting for me in Ottawa. Experienced MPs have told me that once everything is up and running an MP can expect to get between 300 and 500 emails per day. If you have sent me some correspondence and haven’t heard back yet please be patient – you will get a response! Phone me if it is urgent. In the last month I was also in Ottawa for 5 days participating

in an intensive orientation focused on finance and admin and the nonparliamentary aspects of being an MP. We are given a budget that includes staff salaries, office leases, providing information to constituents, inriding travel, etc. If we go over it we pay for it out of our own pockets! On average we spend over six months of the year in Ottawa participating in Parliament and other national responsibilities (for example I am the NDP critic for National Parks) so I also have to find accommodation in Ottawa. The balance of the year is spent traveling around the riding meeting with constituents. Our job as the Progressive Opposition is to make government and Canada better, and that is exactly what we will do! Parliament begins on December 3 and continues until December 11 before breaking for Christmas. My next update will include a look at what it’s like to sit in the House of Commons as your MP. I’m sure it will be an exciting and humbling experience! Have a happy Holiday Season and a great New Year! I hope to see many of you during the break when I start my Coffee With Your MP sessions around the riding! ~Wayne Stetski, Member of Parliament, Kootenay Columbia

Barnyard Bulletin ‘Tis the season of giving

The holidays are a time of giving and it is the same dilemma every year, what do you give your nearest and dearest? While your human loved ones are able to tell you exactly which gift they desire, your pets’ meows and barks might not provide much shopping guidance. Their inability to speak sometimes results in them receiving light-up snowman sweaters, novelty reindeer antlers, and other

gifts that may not exactly get them purring or their tails wagging. Because we want your pets to be genuinely delighted with their holiday gifts, we put together a quick list of some surefire ideas that will have the other neighborhood pets looking on in envy. 1. A comfortable new bed to help achieve better cat naps or doggie dreams. Pet beds come in all shape, sizes and colors and they won’t set you back nearly as much as a mattress for yourself would. 2. New toys galore, you can never go wrong by buying new toys for your pet to pounce on, bat around and chase. You know your pet best and will know what to choose like laser pointers, feathers, squeaky toys, stuffies or balls. 3. For pet safety, especially now where it is dark early, or as a fashion statement there are glittery, blingy, reflector, light-up and colorful collars and leads. 4. Stylish animal coats and sweaters for winter are a real head turner and protect your pets from the cold this season. 5. Colorful dog biscuits or delicious cat treats are also sure to attract plenty of attention. And let’s not forget natural chewy-bones made from buffalo or beef or some catnip for our felines. We hope these ideas get your mind on the right track to coming up with a gift that your pet will never forget. In the end, giving animals a present is like giving a little to yourself. Happy Holidays!

Very funny, and at the same time heart-warming, this play provides a full evening’s entertainment. Three eccentric sisters, a husband who’s been shot and a lawyer with a vendetta: the recipe for a 30th birthday gone perfectly wrong. SPCA seeking public’s help for abused cat

Photo submitted

Malala (pictured above) barely survived after a horrible ordeal. She was discarded at the dump, her legs tied together, bleeding from several wounds, not moving but alive. Her tail had been severed and she was extremely dehydrated and emaciated. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan found the black cat, named Malala, and took her straight to the East Kootenay BC SPCA Branch, where she was immediately rushed to a veterinarian for emergency care. “She was bleeding a lot from her tail, which had been cut off,

and she had several open wounds on her feet, legs and head,” says BC SPCA East Kootenay Branch manager Brenna Baker. “It horrifies me to think that someone might do something like this to any animal, then leave her at the dump, suffering and in pain, tossed away like so much trash.” The vet cleaned Malala’s wounds, performed surgery on her tail and gave

Now, she’s recovering in the warmth of the SPCA shelter, under the attention and care of staff and volunteers who hope to give her a chance at a better life in a loving, forever home. “She is such a sweet pea and so full of love,” Baker says. “She’s got a long road to recovery, but we’re grateful to the man who spotted her at the Elko transfer station

and wasted no time getting her to us.” The cost of Malala’s medical care is expected to be nearly $1,200. A non-profit organization, the BC SPCA relies primarily on public donations to help British Columbia’s

Cranbrook. If anyone has any information on how Malala came to be at the Elko transfer station, they are encouraged to call the BC SPCA cruelty hotline, at 1-855-6227722.

2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI Overview: VW’s hatchback lineup now includes an even more practical wagon and sees the return of the hot all-wheel-drive Golf R.

Drivetrain: It’s an all-turbo four-cylinder lineup consisting of 1.8- and 2.0-litre gas engines, including a 292-horse version in the R; five-speed stick or six-speed automatic connect to the 1.8; a six-speed manual or six-speed automated manual work with both 2.0 engines. VW’s legendary hatchback has received plenty of love in the year since the seventh generation debuted. For 2016,the hot R per-

formance model returns, along with the Golf wagon, which joined the party partway into the 2015 model-year. It offers a bunch of additional cargo space over the already roomy hatchback, although beyond the extended length, there’s nothing else to differentiate them. All Golfs now come with an updated MIB II infotainment system that uses a five-inch touch-screen in base models and a 6.5-inch version in the rest. It responds to swiping and pinch zooming, just like a smart phone does, and it has USB connection. The base Golf uses a turbocharged 170-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder. Or select the reintroduced R to boost those figures to 295/280. The R also boasts all-wheel-drive and your choice of 18- or 19-inch wheels. The base two- or four-door base Golf comes with alloy wheels and faux leather seating. The midand upper-level trims pile on the content, including 17-inch wheels (16-inchers come on lesser trims),

panoramic sunroof, Fender-brand premium sound package, pushbutton start plus backup and forward collision warning systems.
