Empty jars, T-shirts and the lingering smell of marijuana were nearly all that was left at Limelife Society dispensary Tuesday, as the owner closed up shop in the wake of police raids. Hash, bud, cookies and candy advertised in an online store menu were gone from the Nicol Street storefront. Twin paper cups had been left on a coffee table next to a crinkled scrap of rolling paper and a Nintendo controller, there were boxes of rolling paper on a shelf and the fridge was almost bare. The shop closed as the Nanaimo RCMP raided three other Nanaimo dispensaries and arrested employees, according to the owner, who asked not to be named. He’s now waiting to see what happens. Nanaimo’s new rabbi will usher in the eight-day Hanukkah celebration on the steps of city hall next week. Rabbi Bentzi Shemtov will mark Hanukkah with music, doughnuts and a menorah-lighting ceremony at Nanaimo city hall on Dec. 8, three days into the Jewish holiday. It’s the first community event for the rabbi, who plans to open a central Vancouver Island Jewish centre that serves community needs from synagogue to educational and social events, like bar mitzvahs. Until now, Shemtov said there hasn’t been a full-time rabbi for the central Island, although his brother-in-law Rabbi Meir Kaplan made the trip here twice a year from Victoria. They are both part of the Chabad organization, which has 4,000 centres globally, and saw a demand here for a full-time rabbi. Shemtov estimates there are 1,000 to 1,500 Jews in the region and hopes the new centre, still in the works, becomes a home where Jewish people can connect to their heritage and with other Jewish people and come together for holidays like this December’s Hanukkah, or Friday night Sabbath dinner. “A lot of [Jews] told us, some of them are more religious, some of them are less, but everyone wants some type of Jewish presence over where they can meet other Jews and be part of their culture,” he said. Richard Steinberg, a Nanoose resident, is excited about the

notice that they had seven days to stop selling marijuana before they could face enforcement, including the seizure of “offencerelated” property. Executives from the three dispensaries claim 16 people were arrested and charged. Trees Dispensary Nanaimo and Phoenix Pain Management Society also say police took everything, including cash and product. At a press conference Wednesday, all of the dispensaries announced they’ll remain open and Trees also called for the federal government to immediately strike marijuana from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The Nanaimo RCMP were unavailable for an update on arrests by press time. “We have an obligation to our 1,200 patients to provide them with their medicine and that, in my opinion, morally trumps everything,” said Matthew O’Donnell, communications director for Phoenix Pain Management Society, later adding he’s terrified, but believes he’s doing the right thing. A Nanaimo RCMP press release, sent Tuesday morning, said several public complaints were received about illegal marijuana dispensaries. See ‘MARIJUANA’ /3

School closure vote expected

I

FINAL DECISION was anticipated on wednesday night. BY KARL YU The News BulleTiN

Nanaimo school district’s business committee recommends that the board approves school closures. A final vote was anticipated last night after press deadline, but at a Tuesday meeting, the Rutherford Elementary School closure recommendation was approved 5-4. Trustees Steve Rae, Stephanie Higginson, Jeff Solomon, Natasha Bob and Bill Robinson voted in favour, while Jamie Brennan, Tania Brzovic,

Scott Kimler and Noah Routley voiced dissent. The district said it is facing a $2.7-million structural deficit and Rae, school board chairman, said the decision was very difficult, but the district has to find a way to move forward, which unfortunately comes with school closures. “The alternative, if we don’t close schools, is to lay off our workers, cut programs, and that affects the classroom directly,” said Rae. Rutherford closure is contingent on Ministry of Education funding for Frank J. Ney Elementary expansion to accomodate more students, and that hasn’t been approved. Rae said the ministry won’t consider expansion without a business plan.

The district has met with the ministry and while there isn’t money for large capital projects, Ney school expansion isn’t considered that, Rae said. “So what will happen now is our staff will put together a business case [and] will contact the ministry and the ministry will let us know relatively quickly whether or not they feel that we’re on the right track. If they refuse this, it’s over. The school stays open,” said Rae. The business committee also backed staff recommendations to close Woodlands Secondar y School, move Woodbank Primary students to North Cedar Intermediate in 2016 to form Cedar Elementary. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

TRAVEL WITHOUT TROUBLE

More and more people are traveling long distances and having to remain seated for long periods of time. When movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This situation can lead to several common symptoms such as heavy legs, leg pain, swollen feet and ankles. These symptoms are associated with the term of the Economy Class Syndrome. Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for development of phlebitis and thrombosis (blood clot formation). In some cases, blood clots can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism. The discomfort and risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) applies to other types of long distance travel such as car, train or bus. When remaining seated without moving for over 4 hours, the risk of DVT could be four times higher. A DVT can happen to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight, or lifestyle. A simple and comfortable way to help relieve the symptoms of heavy legs, leg pain, swollen feet and ankles during travel is to wear comfortable, graduated compression stockings. Wearing compression stockings is also advised to reduce the risk of developing a more serious condition such as phlebitis or deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.1

Marijuana dispensaries plan to remain open From /1

“Our approach has always been to address public concerns, consult our contracting partners, stakeholders and allow for our investigations to determine the way forward. That was done in this case,” said Nanaimo RCMP Supt. Mark Fisher. The city was given information about the warrants as police were executing them, according to Mayor Bill McKay. “It was not something we

were surprised with. They did serve notice,” said McKay, who doesn’t believe the city could have done anything. Licensing and regulation on land use will not protect dispensaries from federal prosecution, he said. Travis Lane, general manager for Trees Dispensary, isn’t surprised the RCMP followed through on its warning, but he is at the arrest of $15-an-hour employees. “Really they are free to do this if they want, it’s just the

way that they’ve gone about it seems very non-Canadian, non-polite and non-compassionate,” said Lane. He said at a press conference that executives and senior managers will work the counter at the Nanaimo location. “We believe in everything we do, we believe we are doing this for the greater good and we believe we are doing this is the most legitimate way the government will let us do it,” he said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Regional directors heard about the protective power of moose hide. District of Nanaimo Area B director howard houle spoke at the board table last month about the Moosehide Campaign to stop violence against women and children. The movement asks aboriginal and non-aboriginal males to wear a square of moose hide to signify “their commitment to protecting women and children in their lives,” said houle. “From the board, staff finds out about it and i’ve had several inquries from staff, so it will grow from there.” According to the campaign’s website, Paul lacerte became inspired in 2011 while moose hunting with his daughter near the highway of Tears where aboriginal females have been murdered or gone missing. while his daughter skinned the moose, he decided she deserved a life free of violence. The aim is to hand out one million squares across Canada in the next 10 years.

A Nanaimo women’s group is making a visual statement to get people talking about violence. Haven Society and other women’s organizations have joined the Nanaimo Women’s Action Group in a 16-day campaign of activism against gender violence. The campaign, called the Clothesline Project, runs until Human Rights Day (Dec. 10) and spans significant dates, including the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (Dec. 6). “Part of how it’s effective is it’s an interactive visual art project,” said Anne Taylor, Haven Sociey executive director. “Really, our big message is violence silences. Many people who are victimized don’t feel safe to be able to speak up and when they do take that risk to speak up to family, friends or colleagues, sometimes the response they get actually creates more silencing.” The project involves hanging sheets, towels, T-shirts and other clothing, bearing messages against violence, on clotheslines to symbolically air the dirty

Environmentally minded citizens march for climate action

EVENTS HELD at the same time as Paris conference. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

Community members were on the march this weekend to bring attention to their cause: climate action. About 125 people marched through downtown Nanaimo and then held a rally at Maffeo Sutton Park on Sunday as part of the Global Climate March. The worldwide event, spearheaded by environmental group 350.org, was meant to catch the attention of politicians during the Conference of Parties 2015 climate talks in Paris.

Guy Dauncey, author and activist, spoke about the problems of fossil fuel use, unsustainable forestry and a globalized food industry. He argued that it’s “100 per cent possible” for communities to move to 100 per cent renewable energy. Humans first burned firewood for thousands of years, then fossil fuels for hundreds of years, he said, and “we’re now in the middle of discovering how to get it directly from the sun through solar energy and renewables. This is the third great energy revolution.” Dauncey rejects the notion that environmental activists stand in the way of progress of fossil fuel extraction projects. “We are the ones promoting progress and development for a new energy for

for people to join him in protesting the transportation of contaminated soil across the Strait of Georgia. Ian Gartshore of Energy Solutions for Vancouver

Island called for participation in car sharing and a solar co-operative. Marjorie Stewart of Nanaimo Foodshare Society targeted the food industr y, saying that large-scale livestock and dairy farms emit methane and nitrous oxide that’s “far, far worse” for the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. She also stressed the importance of a living wage in ensuring that good, locally grown food is affordable for people. “So for policy [from] the governments: nothing less than a minimum income, instead of charity, to buy your food with,” Stewart said. “And corporations – stop buying their bad food.” The 350.org group’s name signifies a goal: 350 parts per million of carbon

Pot shops had to be closed

The Nanaimo RCMP decided that where there’s pot smoke, there’s fire, and they snuffed it out. Police raided local medical marijuana dispensaries on Tuesday and it was something that needed to be done. We agree with a lot of the arguments to legalize or decriminalize marijuana, but we recognize that those sorts of laws aren’t in place yet. When we disagree with the laws of the land, we can protest them, but Nanaimo’s dispensaries were basically flouting the law and going far beyond a little bit of civil disobedience. It took police many months to carry out the drug busts. That might simply mean that the investigation process was complicated, but maybe it suggests that enforcement was a difficult decision. If that’s the case, we understand why – not all forms of rulebreaking are alike, and some offences are more serious than others. We do think the dispensaries are pretty harmless. The RCMP indicated that public safety was one of the reasons it warned pot shops to close, and that’s a tenuous argument. We question, in most cases, marijuana’s medicinal properties, but it’s less harmful than a lot of things we put in our bodies. The problem is that since it’s illegal to start with, it isn’t subject to the same supplemental regulations like food and drug inspections, for instance. We don’t know from where the product was sourced or how it got from the grow-op to the pot shop. Canada’s new attorney general has been given a mandate to work with provinces and territories on a process leading to the legalization of marijuana. With legalization will come regulation, taxation and education. Medical marijuana dispensaries weren’t providing those things – they were dealing drugs.

That Crockford, she’s just a denier…. Oh wait, the International Union for Conservation of Nature “Red List” says that’s about right, and the population trend is no longer “decreasing” but is now “unknown.” None of this is to deny that our climate is warming, or that the Industrial Revolution and carbon fuel use are part of the picture. It’s the religious zeal, misuse of data and attacks on skeptics that are troubling. B.C. already leads the country with its small but broad-based carbon tax, about which Clark will boast at every opportunity in Paris. We won’t see the B.C. Liberal government’s final “Climate 2.0” plan until next spring, but its advisory committee wants to start jacking up the carbon tax in 2018. And B.C.’s aggressive 2020 greenhouse gas target? The government admits we’re not going to make that, because the economy is growing. ◆ Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

there needs to be “a greater level of community consultation.” And I might add, a willingness to act on the public’s views.

To the Editor,

Re: Downtown library is no longer the destination it used to be, Letters, Nov. 24. I commiserate with the letter writer over her anguish about the recently unimproved Harbourfront Library. She observes that “many people have tried to communicate their concerns and have not met with any success.” This is the problem with government these days, especially our local government in Nanaimo. The mayor or some other worthy may deign to hear you, but you are unlikely to change their minds. They don’t really listen. Communication in Nanaimo is too often from the top down. Media’s excited cheerleading about Trudeau will fade soon enough To the Editor,

Re: Hopefully new PM can maintain momentum, Opinion, Nov. 10. The election of Justin Trudeau in 2015 is reminiscent of the U.S. election of Barack Obama in 2008. It has taken the swooning left-wing media in the U.S.A. seven years for some of them to

realize that he is in way over his head. His presidency is beginning to look like a disaster. Canadians should hope the same type of excited liberal cheerleading media outlets in Canada will figure out Trudeau a whole lot faster than seven years.

Hanukkah celebrates good deeds From /1

Hanukkah begins in the evening on Sunday (Dec. 6). It’s a celebration of the miracle of oil, but Shemtov says it also carries an important message in the lighting of the menorah that the way to fight darkness is through light, or good deeds. “Just light one candle, just do one good deed,” he said. “The next step is to add two good deeds and before you know it the whole menorah will be lit; the whole world will be a positive world.” The public event with Mayor Bill McKay starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the front steps of city hall. Refreshments and music will follow at the Service and Resource Centre at 411 Dunsmuir St. To reach Shemtov, call 250-797-7877 or go to www.jewishnanaimo.com. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Seaview Elementary School students will have more food for thought as Nanaimo Chapters has gifted the library with cash and new books. Through its Indigo Adopt a School program, Chapters delivered new books and also donated an addi-

the space,” said Davie. She reached out to managers at the Nanaimo Chapters informing them of the school’s need in June. The grassroots program sees Chapters selecting a school and fundraising for three weeks in September, specifically for the school library, according to Erin Krock, Chapters’ info

Brittany Harrison, left, and Ashlee Cosman deliver purses to the Samaritan House Emergency Women’s Shelter last month.

tions on Facebook, Brittany Harrison, an old friend from high school reached out to Cosman. “I saw her post and I made a comment,” Harrison said. “Then I shared the post and then we both kind of got our friends together.” Harrison, who happens to be involved

with Brownies in Nanaimo, decided to join in Cosman’s philanthropic adventure. Harrison and the Brownies managed to collect an additional 40 purses through donations. The duo have also encouraged others to follow in their footsteps and created a hastag, #fillabag,

The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce is touting a “warm Christmas atmosphere” at a large-scale luncheon at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre on Wednesday (Dec. 9). “The chef is pulling out all the stops for an old-fashioned Christmas menu,” said Kim Smythe, chamber CEO, in a press release. “There are over $30,000 worth of auction items so you could virtually do all your Christmas shopping right there.” The Vancouver Island Symphony Choir, the Nanaimo Youth Choir and the Wellington Jazz Band will perform, and there won’t be any chamber business on the agenda. Anyone is welcome, not just chamber members. For tickets, please call 250-7561191, ext. 2, or e-mail renee@nanaimocham ber.bc.ca.

CHRISTMAS SEASON

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD

A few weeks ago, Ashlee Cosman was scrolling through Facebook when she a saw a photo that showed a lady giving a purse to a homeless woman. “She had filled a purse with basic everyday needs and gave it to a homeless woman,” Cosman said. She decided to fill 20 purses with basic essentials such as tooth brushes, deodorant and female hygiene products and donate them to the Samaritan House Emergency Women’s Shelter, a Nanaimobased organization that offers housing options for women. Donation is sew thoughtful

Mid Island Co-op representatives present a $10,900 donation to Georgia Avenue Community School’s Kids 4 Kids afterschool program.

A donation from Mid-Island Co-op will provide Georgia Avenue Community School students with a sew-sew time. The co-op presented $10,900 to the school’s Kids 4 Kids program for the purchase of sewing machines and materials, with

which the Grade 6-7 children will create blankets, clothing and more. The after-school drop-in program helps students facing challenges from poverty, family difficulties and other issues by providing health and wellness activities and positive relationships.

A local hotelier plans to provide a Christmas holiday in his hometown. Aohan Cui, owneroperator of Value Lodge Motel, will offer a free room to a local family over Christmas, and he’s challenging other hotel owners to do the same. “I’ve been thinking about it for a little while,” Cui said. “There’s a big need – especially around Christmas time and with the cold weather – for families and for them to be together. And I think everybody should have a nice Christmas.” He plans to work with a community group to identify a family that would benefit from comfortable accommodations from Dec. 24-26. Panago has offered to sponsor his initiative and he’ll be on the lookout for other businesses who may be able to offer Christmas presents for the family.

“I think the coolest feeling was pulling up. We needed two vehicles and there were three of us girls,” Cosman said. “There were a few women outside and the look on their faces as soon as they could see the purses [was] actual excitement for something that, really, all of us had laying in our closet.” Cosman and Harrison plan to fill purses again next year. Harrison said this year’s campaign did more than help people in need. “It brought a lot of people in the community together, and for us, some old friendships,” Harrison said. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Group tries to spread smiles Everybody Deserves a Smile is carrying on its winter tradition of creating Kindness Care Packages, but needs some help filling the bags. The group has one more week to meet its goal of 435 care packages for homeless people in Nanaimo, plus 50 to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The project is a co-operative effort between the non-profit group and students at Nanaimo District and John Barsby second-

ary schools. The painted bags come with a card and homemade sugar cookies, but organizers are short on tuques, mitts, scarves, woolen socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, which they want to include in the bags. Anyone who can help provide those items, or cash to purchase them, is asked to drop off donations at Mon Petit Choux bakery café or the Dinghy Dock Pub, call Jodi at 250-713-0104 or e-mail edasnanaimo@hotmail.com.

Christmas Seals campaign helps battle lung disease The Christmas Seals campaign will try to stamp out lung disease. The Lung Association is trying to raise money for lung health this month with its annual seals campaign. The association’s work funds research and education and targets chronic lung diseases such

as asthma. It also seeks to prevent tobacco use and advocates for healthier air quality. “Christmas Seals are a symbol of hope,” said Bernie Lafrance, volunteer director in Nanaimo for the Lung Association. “We thank all of our donors for their generosity and ask Cana-

dians who are concerned about healthy lungs and healthy air to give generously to the Christmas Seals campaign.” This year’s campaign goal is $1 million. To make a donation, please call 1-800-665-5864. For more information or to donate online, please visit www.bc.lung.ca.

VIU’s Business Plan Competition moves to the next stage this week with a Dragon’s Denstyle pitch fest. Vancouver Island University students and alumni finalists will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges this Friday (Dec. 4) as part of the competition. The finalists’ ideas range from technogy start-ups to online services to gardening and beauty products. “Our finalists have been working very hard to hone their presentations, and have benefited from the support of volunteer mentors from the business community,” said John Predyk, professor in VIU’s Faculty of Management and chair of the 2015 competition. Business professionals from the region have volunteered to serve as the ‘dragons.’ “We think the judges will be impressed with the calibre of the pitches, and the public will enjoy the chance to see up-and-coming entrepreneurs from a number of different academic programs at VIU present their ideas,” Predyk said. Thanks to sponsors including the Pieter de Reuver Foundation, VIU will be able to award cash prizes – including a grand prize of $2,500 – and donated business services. The pitch fest will be held from 4-7:30 p.m. in Building 250 and is open to the public. For more information, please visit www.viu.ca/bp.

NEWMAN, Jack Stahl

August 22, 1934 – November 26, 2015 Jack was predeceased by his parents, older brother Bob and his infant son Lee. He is survived by five brothers, Frank, Thor, Chester, Alan and David. Jack leaves his first wife Bev and their children Darlene, Jack Jr., Steve (Cherie) and Ron (Nan). There are several grandchildren and one great granddaughter Dakota Rose. His wife Roberta and her children Laura, Deborah and Dan will cherish their happy memories of him always. Jack enjoyed the outdoors, which led to commercial fishing and logging as his career choices. He retired at 67 while supervising the helicopter logging in Lake Cowichan. Jack had a debilitating illness for several years following retirement, but pancreatic cancer claimed him. He hasn’t left us, he’s just looking for those pine mushrooms. You’ll know him by his red suspenders.

JAMES, Earl Andrew

May 2, 1937 to November 22, 2015 With sadness we say goodbye to Earl, a beloved husband, loving dad, cherished grandpa, brother and friend as he crosses into God’s light. His wife Margaret, his children Glenn and Lisa, his grandchildren Kevin and Jeremy and brother Wilbur are at peace knowing he is safe in the arms of his parents Jean and Ray and his brother Doug. Earl was born in Nanaimo and grew up on the farm in Chase River. The friends he made as a boy stayed with him through life and speaks of the love and loyalty we will always remember. After graduation from LeTourneau Technical College in 1960 he returned home to meet the love of his life before working as a Professional engineer at Harmac, Northwood Pulp and NLK in Vancouver. He enjoyed a good party but loved the outdoors and taught us all how to talk to trees. His travels led him around the globe with family and friends yet his favourite place in the world was his garden. What a full and wonderful life. We’ll miss you. Many thanks go to family, friends and neighbours for their support and to the nurses at the Palliative Care Unit for their compassion during Earl’s final days. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 2, 2016 at St. Philips Anglican Church on Cedar Road. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity close to your heart.

William "Bill" Henry McCasky passed away peacefully at home November 15, 2015 after a quick, but hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill lived an amazing life. He joined the navy which led him on many adventures including meeting his wife, Donna, on the west coast in 1967. He was employed at the Crofton Pulp Mill for 36 years and worked very hard to become a red seal machinist. He retired in 2005 and never looked back! Bill was a passionate person who gave his all to things that meant a lot to him. This ranged from the union, to religion, to both provincial and federal politics and finally, the Veterans MC. Bill's one thing was motorcycling and he has ridden all over North America and Europe. Bill is survived by his wife, Donna, daughters Sina (Darren) and Corinne (Trent), grandchildren Tyler, Skye, Emma, Luke, and Erica, great grandchild Lynsie, mother Stephanie, brother Gerry and many nieces and nephews. We would like to thank Jason Mann for his quick actions which gave us more time with him. Thank you to the Veterans MC for their love and support in his final days. Thank you to the nurses and staff at NRGH for the excellent care they provided. To Bill's amazing cousin Dea-Anne Sandrk whose nursing skills and loving care allowed him to remain at home, there are no words. A celebration of Bill's life will be held in January 30th, 2016 at 1:30 pm at Royal Canadian Legion 9775 Chemainus Rd., Chemainus, B.C. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the, Royal Canadian Legion #191 PO Box 423 Chemainus, BC V0R 1K0. Sands of Nanaimo

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the mental health workers who go the extra mile for their clients.

BOUQUET To the Canadian veterans for your duty and for your service to Canada.

BEEF To the lady at the health authority for her aggressive, rough and strange attitude to another person.

BEEF To the aggressive driver on Cedar Road. At night it is dark, narrow and full of wildlife. The limit is 60 kilometres per hour. Go ahead, but don’t push others. You are dangerous and I will report you.

BOUQUET To my friends Christina, Elena and Mike for bringing me meals when I was ill. You are all angels. BEEF To the big-box store. You guys let me down big time – had my pills on hand for 37 days. No phone call. BOUQUET To whoever enforces the solo seats at bus stops so people can’t lay down. BEEF To the toll bridge operators that charge service fees for not being registered with them. BOUQUET To our realtor Kim Rhodes at Royal LePage. She was so knowledgeable and motivated in finding us a perfect condo. She was always pleasant and professional and she put in that extra effort sometimes required. Thanks so much. BEEF To the all-consuming passion for computers. I’m a big fan of a certain TV franchise, as are millions around the world. There’s a new series coming out in 2017 that can only be seen on the internet. That’s a lousy way to treat the loyal fans. BOUQUET To the wonderful coaches and board members that make the Nanaimo Track and Field Club such a huge success and pleasure to be a part of. BEEF To the government for not opening up the Ucluelet Coast Guard as well. BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Foundation for encouraging random acts of kindness. BEEF To the food store offering a new and smaller bag of 12 raisin oatmeal cookies for just under $5 on special, when the regular and recently increased price for 24 is $7.99. Where’s the logic?

BOUQUET To 2 Burley Men in Nanaimo. When my home sold, I had scheduled another moving company to do my move. However, they left me stranded. One call to Mike with 2 Burley Men solved my problem. They got me out on time, and never slacked on their pace with off loading into my new place. BEEF To those who put notices up on bulletin boards for a specific event date and then can’t be bothered to remove them after the event. Whom do you expect to take it down for you? BOUQUET To Chester (and his human family) whose love is felt across the country; I’ll never look at a pig’s ear the same. Looking forward to dock jumping at Shawnigan Lake this summer. BEEF To the Nob Hill bullies who try to intimidate and park in the driveways of others, because they choose to use their own driveway for purposes other than parking. I hope bylaw makes you rethink how much space you take up. BOUQUET To Kennedy Street for keeping it real: kids, dogs, sarcasm, compassion – you’ve got it all. BEEF To Nanaimo city council for spending tax dollars subsidizing the purchase of cleanerburning wood stoves and then turning around and allowing backyard burning which creates more pollution. Banning the burning of garden waste would improve air quality at no cost to taxpayers.

BOUQUET To the lady who paid the extra $2 that my son was missing at the Subway beside Wellington Secondary last week. I hope he was thankful as I know I am to know that there are kind-hearted people out there. He and I will both pay it forward. BOUQUET To Kerry at First Baptist. Thank you for everything that you do to make sure so many children have a wonderful Christmas every year. You always go above and beyond. BOUQUET To my aunt Bridget Hall for all the help that she has given me over the six years since the accident. You have always been there for me, especially when times were tough and strenuous. You have always been a person to count on to stand up for me and have my back. BOUQUET To Lynn Everitt. Thank you for being my friend over the years. You have always been there for me. You will always be my best friend.

BEEF To inconsiderate neighbours who slam doors, leave a dog to bark all day, speak in loud voices to each other all the time and are impatient to the disabled.

BOUQUET To everyone at Value Village for allowing me to participate in a work experience. I learned so many valuable skills. Your community involvement is appreciated.

BOUQUET To Tanya Assaf. Thank you for taking the time to offer extra help and support while I was in the West Program. BEEF To the person who stole our Christmas laser light projector from our front lawn on Bay Street. We are pensioners, and I didn’t want to see my octogenarian husband struggle with traditional lights and the laser projector seemed like an excellent solution. So much for Christmas spirit.

BOUQUET To the kind lady volunteer in Bowen Park for taking care of our beautiful park. I saw you in the rain lugging multiple bags of garbage out of the deep woods. Thank you so much, we need more people like you in our town.

BOUQUET To Jody at NRGH who put in a lot of effort to collect Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. You have a heart of gold.

BOUQUET To Randy at Quality Foods for helping me. I have learned a lot of skills from the store on how to clean and stock items.

BOUQUET To Chris at Quality Foods for helping me. I have learned a lot of new skills like how to slice bread, package foods and doing packaging in the deli. Thank you very much for the teaching for me.

BOUQUET To Kayla Bystedt. Thank you so much for being my friend and being there for me when I needed you. You will always be my friend.

Volleyball provincials will be served I

Woodlands girls out to compete

DOVER, VIU to co-host senior girls’ teams. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

There will be a spike in interest in volleyball as provincials are held this week in Nanaimo. The Dover Bay Dolphins are the host team for this year’s senior AAAA girls’ B.C. championships. Dover goes in with the No. 5 seed after finishing as runners-up to the Oak Bay Bays in the Island finals earlier this month in Victoria. “I think we’re playing pretty well right now,” said Maddie McDonald, one of Dover’s team captains. “There’s stuff we can work on and we’re hoping we can get through that this week before provincials.” Rose Plensky, another team captain, said her squad has been working in practice to maintain intensity so it can stay at a high level of play going into the big tournament. The tourney will involve 16 teams representing zones across B.C., and the matches will be held both at Dover Bay Secondary School and at the Vancouver Island University gym. The competition should be fierce. “Provincials is obviously the top teams from all over B.C., so we’re going to have to fight hard every game,”

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Dover Bay Dolphins player Sam Chwelos digs out the volleyball during an exhibition match against the Woodlands Eagles on Monday at Dover Bay Secondary School.

McDonald said. “You can’t let up at all.” Dover will need to play with high energy, said Plensky, communicate well on the court and be solid with its serve-receive game. Mostly the Dolphins

will try to concentrate on what they can do on their side of the court, since many of the opposing teams will be unfamiliar. “It’s almost better, because then we just get to focus on our

game … do what we can,” said Amy Smith, also a team captain. Provincials on their home court is the perfect way for the Grade 12s to close out high school volleyball.

A “dynamic” Woodlands Eagles girls’ volleyball teams ever will be looking for dynamite results at provincials. The Eagles are in Kelowna for senior AA girls’ provincial championships. Woodlands does a lot of things well on the court. “Our team, as far as movement patterns and positioning defence, it’s probably one of the strongest we’ve had,” said Ryan Orton, Eagles coach. “The benefit to that is yeah, we keep balls in play, we extend rallies and we have good defence and control, but [we also have] girls who can get kills … and finish rallies.” He said his team has been steady all year and is prepared, having faced almost all the province’s best AA teams. A number of Eagles players also have the experience of competing at provincials in 2014. “Last year was a new experience and this year, I’m looking at my team to do more,” Orton said. “To compete for it, not just be happy to be there.” Other local teams competing at volleyball provincials this week are the Woodlands AA boys and the Dover Bay Dolphins AAA boys, Island champions. Both those tournaments got underway on Wednesday in Langley.

Clippers’ streak hits six in a row The Nanaimo Clippers needed overtime to keep their win streak alive. The Clips clipped the Victoria Grizzlies 2-1 in double OT on Tuesday on the road for their sixth-straight win in B.C. Hockey League play. Chris Dodero scored the winner on a rebound, Sheldon Rempal stayed hot with a goal and Evan Johnson made 34 saves for the victory. “It wasn’t our best game, it was kind of a no-hitter, but we found a way to win and our goalie stepped up and he was our best player by far,” said Blake Clement, Clippers assistant coach. The Shipmen didn’t create as many chances as the coaching staff might have liked, as they didn’t maintain enough puck possession and tried to force plays that ended up going the other way. Still, any road win is a positive, Clement said. “It’s nice to keep the streak going. It’s very important to get that win last night to go on this road trip still having a lot of confidence in our game and knowing that we have a chance to go on a pretty long streak if we play our game and play hard and just stay focused on one game at a time.” GAME ON … The Clippers visit the Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday (Dec. 4), then visit the Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday and the Surrey Eagles on Sunday. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Dover’s Maddie McDonald makes a block during exhibition play.

They’ll get to play in front of friends and family and the whole student body, in fact, since the first couple of matches are during school hours. Still, the home team isn’t necessarily feeling pressure. “No, I think it’s just more exciting,” McDonald said. Plensky, a graduating player, said she’s “really excited for it. This is it, so it’s really nice to have that home-court advantage finishing off the season.”

GAME ON … Dover Bay begins play today (Dec. 3) with a match against Mt. Boucherie at 11:35 a.m. Dover then faces Churchill at 2:15 p.m. and then Riverside at 4:55 p.m. at the Dover Bay Secondary School gym. Friday’s schedule will depend on Thursday’s results. The provincial final will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Vancouver Island University gym. For a full schedule, please visit http://girlsaaaaprovincials2015.doverbay.ca. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

ARTWALK SHEDS light on thriving artistic community. By RACHEL STERN The News BulleTiN

Nanaimo’s downtown and Old City Quarter has a thriving art community, but it’s not something that’s always visible when people walk down the sidewalk. Singer-songwriter Alfie Zappacosta is continually challenging himself to evolve. “You should be testing yourself if you love it,” said Zappacosta about music. “It is just constantly learning.” He said he grabs his guitar every day to ensure he’s evolving as an artist and can give fans the best performances when they see him live. Zappacosta hasn’t visited Nanaimo in quite some time, but said he’s looking forward to saying ‘hello’ and singing the songs people love when he performs at Simon Holt on Sunday (Dec. 6). “If you can’t entertain people with your art … then you don’t belong here,” he said. He’ll be strumming on guitar, accompa-

It’s a crazy business,” said Zappacosta. “It was a rewarding time in my life doing the theatre gigs.” Zappacosta has been working on a new album he plans to release in the new year. It takes a look back over his 40-year career and the songs people remember and cherish, such as We Should Be Lovers. “There was a passion and a simplicity of words,” said Zappacosta about the song. Zappacosta per forms at 7:30 p.m. with special guest Teri Puckett. Tickets are $22 and are available by calling 250-9333338, at the restaurant and at the door.

“Did you know our proposed expansion follows the existing route for most of the way?” - Carey Johannesson, Project Lead, Land & Right-of-Way, Trans Mountain Expansion Project.

The proposed Trans Mountain Expansion follows the existing

route or other linear infrastructure for 89% of the way.

OF THE ROUTE IS ON THE EXISTING RIGHT-OF-WAY.

That means approximately 100 kms needs to be moved to undisturbed lands. These reroutes will be made to improve safety and address environmental considerations, and will accommodate

changes in land usage since the pipeline was originally built in 1953.

WILL REQUIRE NEW ROUTING.

We’ve been talking with the public, stakeholders, landowners and Aboriginal communities along the proposed corridor to hear their concerns. We expect you will ask questions. We’ve made
