Forest trade mission faces headwinds across Asian markets By Tom Fletcher Forests Minister Steve Thomson is leading the B.C. industry’s annual trade mission to promote lumber sales in Asia this week, with a focus on maintaining sales in a soft market. Accompanied by more than 30 executives from B.C. forest companies, Thomson started the trip Monday with a

visit to Japan’s largestever wood building, an elderly care facility under construction in Tokyo. The visit comes as Japan’s economy is slipping back into recession. Japan has been a major lumber customer for B.C. since the 1970s, and is the third largest buyer behind the United States and China. Sales volume to Japan is down so far this year,

but value is up slightly to $556 million, in a market known for demanding high-grade wood. The next stops are Dalian and Beijing, China, which is B.C.’s biggest recent success story with sales that topped $1 billion last year for mostly lowergrade lumber. So far in 2015, sales to China are off 11 per cent from the same time last year as the world’s most populous country struggles to maintain economic growth. In an interview as he prepared to leave, Thomson said B.C. lumber producers are faced with slow sales in Asia and a decline in timber supply for standard lumber in the wake of the pine beetle epidemic. After years of promotion, B.C. has reached 43 per cent of all China’s imported lumber, over competitors including Russia, Australia and New Zealand. “One of the focuses of the mission is to move the product up the value chain, particularly in the

China market, because as you look to supply limitations, you want to make sure you get maximum value out of it,” Thomson said. “So it’s important to move up into the mid-rise multi-family construction, infill partition walls, hybrid construction, that aspect of it.” Along with the industry and the

federal government, B.C. has promoted wood construction as a green and earthquakeresistant alternative to concrete, the building standard in China. Susan Yurkovich, named president of the Council of Forest Industries in June, is making her first official visit to Asia. COFI represents B.C.’s biggest

producers, including Interfor, West Fraser, We y e r h a e u s e r, Conifex, Domtar, Gorman, Dunkley, Babine Forest Products and Canfor. Yurkovich said member companies have meetings lined up with Asian buyers, and she wants to spread the word that B.C. is a reliable supplier of lumber from

sustainably managed sources. B.C.’s top five lumber customers by volume are the U.S., China, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines and South Korea. With the CanadaU.S. softwood lumber agreement having expired, participants say diversifying B.C.’s lumber market is more important than ever.

The Kootenay ICE weren’t the only winners at the November 20th Kootenay ICE game against the Moose Jaw Warriors. EKFH’s 8th Annual Starlite Campaign scored too thanks to generous hockey fans and the support of Snap’d East Kootenay and the Kootenay ICE organization. EKFH volunteers wandered Western Financial Place on November 20th selling over 900 foam stars during the game. Some fans bought a dozen or more. Volunteers also collected donations and raised awareness about EKFH at an EKFH information

booth. At the second intermission, the pucks were tossed onto the ice and 3 winners walked away with great prizes donated by the Kootenay ICE organization. There was also an opportunity for fans to win a gift basket at the EKFH booth compliments of Coyote Jack’s and Snap’d East Kootenay. $1400 was raised from the star toss and with a generous donation of $500 from the Kootenay ICE organization, $1900 was donated to EKFH’s 8th Annual Starlite Campaign. “Thank you to everyone

who participated as a volunteer and to everyone who came out to the game. Congratulations to the Kootenay ICE for beating Moose Jaw 2-1 — it was a successful night for everyone,” said Patricia Whalen, Assistant Executive Director EKFH. Chris Wahl, Director of Sales & Public Relations for the Kootenay ICE, said “It was great to partner with EKFH and Snap’d East Kootenay. The Kootenay ICE organization is happy to see that the event was a success. “ see Stars page 5

anything like the refugees today. I am so proud today to be a German for all the caring work they do for the refugees. I was 15 when the war ended and my family lost everything three times. We were bombed by

the war heroes. We experienced one evacuation and had to run away a second time to not get caught by the Russians. I can empathize with these poor people. You should use your energy to find ways to help! Canada is a beautiful country with lots of helpful people, not like you. The people you should target, which sabotage

Canada, are for example, share holders of the big forest companies. They close one sawmill after the other, pay peanuts for the lumber and export the logs and the jobs, laughing all the way to the bank. No maintenance for the facilities any more, no trouble with higher wage demands. Here is a way to help many refugees:

1) Strip these companies of the logging and water rights. 2) Confiscate the closed sawmills and the land. 3) Let the refugees operate these sawmills as a co-op and you will see what they can do. In no time we will export finished lumber again and not raw logs and jobs. The

You should emigrate to the USA and become a respectful member of the Republican Party. The USA is the initiater of the trouble in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, which led to the start of IS

(Islamic State). Compare Germany and Sweden with the USA and Canada and the number of refugees they are willing to take. Is it not ridiculous? We are such a rich and big country that can use so many more hard working refugees, which will help later to pay our pension. ~Udo Grady, Cranbrook, BC

Gifts that Give Hope at Western Financial Place this weekend by Dan Schellenberg Gifts That Give Hope’s website states that it promotes meaningful gift giving and support for nonprofit organizations by helping communities host alternative gift fairs. Cranbrook was fortunate enough to host one of these gift fairs last November at Western Financial Place, which was the first of its kind held in Canada. The Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) will be holding its second annual fair in Cranbrook at Western Financial Place on December 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Last year, the event raised $3500 for 14 local non-profit organizations. This year, the organizers are looking to increase that amount by at least 50%. Additional features at the Fair will include: free Stars from page 2

“snapd was proud to join forces with the hockey community to help give back and support those who need it most. It was also great to be able to partner with EKFH again this year for another successful event,” said Janice Sommerfeld of snapd East Kootenay. EKFH’s 8th annual Starlite Campaign is raising funds for regional and

skate with Santa, free swim, compliments of Salvation Army, live music and food. Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) is a United States based organization that held its first fair in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and was hosted by a local woman’s giving Circle and raised over $20,000 to help 15 nonprofit organizations. According to GTGH’s website, fairs are typically held in public venues where shoppers meet and learn about nonprofit organizations, and make a donation to a cause of their choice in honour of a friend or loved one. In turn, the friend or loved one receives an attractive card with a description of their charitable donation. Furthermore, GTGH fairs give shoppers the opportunity to choose meaningful gifts for

people on their gift list, while helping others who are not on anyone’s gift list. The planning committee of this year’s event consists of: Riley Wilcox, Executive Director of Cranbrook & District Community Foundation (CDCF); Patricia Whalen, GTGH Board Member, who was responsible for bringing Jeanne Kruidenier, president of GTGH, to Cranbrook last year for its inaugural event in Canada and Livia Lara, Events Coordinator for CDCF. Members of the planning committee are excited to be holding the second annual fair and urge members of the community to come out and support the event. All proceeds raised during the event go back to

local charities that are making our communities a wonderful place in which to live. Riley Wilcox says that “Gifts that Give Hope is an opportunity to explore ways of giving back to the community while in the company of friends and family. We encourage all residents to enjoy the free activities and have fun learning about ways to support those in need this season and throughout the year.” Patricia Whalen shares, “Why buy another sweater or candy dish, when you could make a gift in honor of a loved one to support the important work of a local non-profit? These organizations feed, house, and educate families that work hard to enhance the quality of our lives. Don’t worry though, you will not

community health programs - EKFH’s fundraising goal is to raise $150,000 and light 17 large stars ($5,000 per star) and 24 small stars ($2,500 per star). These programs are dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and more or may require help with chronic disease management, home nursing, inhome oxygen, wound, senior, pediatric and self-care programs.

The purpose of EKFH is to support and strengthen health care initiatives in the East Kootenay, EKFH is a leader in publically supported health care fundraising and practising responsible allocation of funds that ensure your money is going where it is needed most. There are many other ways to give to EKFH, and all gifts are important. Whether you choose to donate during your lifetime,
