Deroche pot dispensary busted Rally planned in support of couple who volunteered to run compassion club Kevin Mills Mission Record
Bob Woolsey doesn’t understand why Mission RCMP have targeted his medical marijuana facility in Deroche. The 64-year-old and his 57-year-old wife Dawn Parker were taken into custody by the RCMP on Nov. 25 after police raided their home, trailer and several other structures. Woolsey said he and his wife are the volunteer managers of the BC Pain Society’s Compassion Club in Deroche.
The couple opened the club on Feb. 1 and have about 400 clients, all of whom have medical marijuana prescriptions. He said the raid was a shock. “At approximately 9 a.m., at least 12 armed and vested RCMP arrived at my country home with warrants.” During the takedown, Woolsey said he and his wife were handcuffed and transported to “individual, concrete, ice-cold cells in Mission RCMP headquarters.” He called the conditions deplorable for people of his age. Woolsey said RCMP seized hundreds
of items, including two used vehicles, vending machines, a juicer, cash, communication devices, laptops, computers and other items. He said police also took his “legal medical cannabis grow.” Woolsey, who suffers from chronic pain, has had a prescription for cannabis for 10 years. He said he now no longer has the medication for his pain and neither do his clients. “This is a pretty strange situation. If this was 1975 I would have believed it, but it’s
2015 and I can’t believe they’ve done this,” he said. When the club first opened, Woolsey said, despite it being illegal, he was assured by the RCMP that the club would be tolerated as long as he “stuck to a strict criteria of patient intake.” He said he has not sold anything to minors or anyone who didn’t have a medical permit. But after the raid, Woolsey said he was told by police that an anonymous tip was Continued on A3
BATTLING CLIMATE CHANGE
Neil Smith (left) organized a group of about 50 people on a march through downtown Mission on Sunday morning. The event was held to create awareness for climate change and the Paris Climate Summit in which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking part. Participants marched from the West Coast Express station through town and ended at the parking lot in front of Welton Tower, where Smith spoke to the group about the importance of ensuring community leaders work towards battling climate change. Guilty plea expected Murder suspect in court today, rally planned Kevin Mills Mission Record
The man accused of killing Mission mother of two Ele Anthonysz is scheduled to plead guilty today (Friday) in Chilliwack. Walter Joseph Ramsay, 42, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of arson, stemming from an incident that took place April 17, 2015. On that day, Anthonysz, 33, died when her Mission home, located in the Green Acres Mobile Home Park on Shook Road by Hatzic Lake, was set on fire. Mission RCMP were called to the scene just after 3 a.m. Fire crews extinguished the flames and were able to enter the trailer, where they found Anthonysz’ body. An 11-year-old girl and eight year-old boy escaped the blaze. Witnesses reported that the two children ran from the trailer with their hands bound together with zip ties. Ramsay, Anthonysz’ former boyfriend, was arrested the next day. Since then, the community has come together with donations to help Anthonysz’s children transition to living with their grandmother. Friends and family of Anthonysz will hold a rally at the Chilliwack Law Courts this afternoon.

Drugs, firearms found Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and local police executed a search warrant at a residence in Mission over a two-day period, locating drugs and firearms. On Nov. 25, CBSA, with the assistance of the RCMP Lower Mainland District’s emergency response team, executed a search warrant under the Customs Act at a residence located on Keeves Place in Mission. A subsequent warrant under the Controlled Drug and
Substances Act was executed at the residence on Nov. 26 by the Mission RCMP’s prolific offender suppression team. A search of the residence located drugs and firearms. Brian McEathron, 45, faces multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance, production of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. McEathron has been released pending trial.

Today, the man accused of causing her death is expected to plead guilty in a Chilliwack court room. KEVIN MILLS FILE PHOTO The gathering takes place from 2 to 5 p.m., honouring Anthonysz and raising awareness to fight violence against women. All are welcome. According to WE CAN (a campaign to end violence against women), each week in Canada, one or two women are murdered by either a current or former partner. A press release issued by rally organizers states that, according to the World Health Organization (2014), an average of 30 per cent of women
have experienced violence in their intimate relationships with men. In some countries, the number is as high as 71 per cent. “To end violence against women we must continue to fight for social, economic, and political change. Raising awareness is a fundamental step toward that change, the release states. Donations to Anthonysz’s family can be made online at gofundme.com/sdsjf4.

Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright said the

‘Inventory of skills’ created Nominees sought Seniors’ survey provides valuable information; one entrant wins gold Kevin Mills Mission Record
Mission’s Howard Bismeyer may be the proud owner of a oneounce gold bar, but it’s the Mission Seniors Centre Association that was the real winners last week. Bismeyer won the gold when his name was randomly drawn from all of the local seniors who participated in a survey created by the association with the help of The Mission Record. The survey asked Mission residents aged 55 and over for information on their work experience, training and knowledge and their willingness to share it with others through volunteer work. The association will now take that information and build a database that can be used to help establish seniors-oriented programs and activities. “ I ’ d l i k e to say thank you to everyINGRAM one that participated in this survey,” said Bob Ingram, president of the association. “We are, at the present time, working with the district of Mission to build a new seniors’ centre and we’re trying to get a little ahead of the game. The idea behind this project was to build an inventory of skills,” added Ingram. He said they also want to join forces with community services to build a volunteer registry. However, he noted that personal information will not be used without permission. He’s hoping the list of volunteers will continue to grow. “If we are success-

I have been here over 40 years and even then we had great volunteers,” said Selvaraja. He wanted to find a way to harness t h a t experience a n d bring it together. After FRANKLIN speaking to Andrew Franklin, publisher of the Mission Record and the Abbotsford News, the survey idea began. Franklin was on hand for the gold bar draw and took the opportunity to share some of the survey results with

the crowd. “We received about 50 different classifications of professional expertise and when you think about it,
things like accounting and finances, we had multiple people under that category,” he said. But it wasn’t the top response.
Franklin said the top three professions listed were medical, managerial and business entrepreneurs. Other fields of expertise that were reported included human resources, secretarial, plumbing, gardening, heating, dentistry, lawyer education and more. “As you can see, it is very diverse.” Other results from the survey include: – 51 per cent of responders are retired; – 26 per cent were employed full-time; – 51 per cent said they frequently volunteer and 22 per cent of them want to know more about other volunteer opportunities; and – 61 per cent want to be contacted as quickly as possible about volunteer opportunities.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Holiday spending
Are you in favour of legalizing marijuana in Canada?
consumers spending extra money at this time of year. The more cash that flows outside of the community – be it online or to surrounding communities – the harder it is to remain profitable. The idea of shop local has been stressed in the past, but that sentiment is never more important than it is in December. If Mission consumers made the effort to spend just a portion of their holiday budget in their own community, it can make a huge difference. Take a look around; Mission has a lot to offer. Living here, some residents tend to forget that and are lured elsewhere. Make the choice to support your community.
If, like a majority of people in the world, you have an email account, your inbox was likely filled with advertising last week. People found their accounts inundated with ads for online Black Friday sales, followed closely by even more ads – this being the electronic age and all – for Cyber Monday sales, promising even bigger and better deals. While we all like a deal and, yes, it can be a real time-saver to order from the comfort of your living room, what’s missing from that equation? Mission! For many local businesses, the holiday season can be a “make it or break it” situation. Retail businesses depend on

Don’t forget your pets Other options could be explored as temperatures drop It’s too cold to be leaving companion animals, cats and dogs, outdoors at night or for very long during the day. With temperatures near and below zero paws and noses can freeze. While thinking about our pets, remember a nice Christmas present for all pets and their guardians would be to have the animal spayed
or neutered, checked for health condition, tattooed in case they are ever lost and better still, make a conscious decision to retain the cat or dog as an indoor companion. Be wise, be kind and be careful so your pet does not freeze to death. George F. Evens Mission

Regarding the intersection at Cedar St. and Seventh Ave.: Those crossing the intersection by foot or wheels every day, especially in the rush hours, can only hope that a new solution will resolve the situation once and for decades ahead. The stretch is called a connector for a reason. It seems that anything slowing down the traffic along the connector has a potential to become a short-term solution, and come back to where we are today. Even though more costly, perhaps a variety of long -erm options can be evaluated as well. For example,

think of an underpass under the intersection. As extraordinary as it may sound, the underpass along the Cedar corridor (under Seventh Ave.) should facilitate a free flow of traffic, minimize accident potential, as well as address noise and carbon monoxide pollution problem in the area. The approach may also offer a way to mitigate an expropriation issue to a certain degree. Perhaps there are more options. Jaroslav Chizhov Mission

KEVIN MILLS PHOTO bers had purchased their own machines off online bidding sites. Many were in disrepair and there were few places to turn to for parts and service. Floyd knew that Arnold had a long history of repairing and maintaining pinball machine and the two men joined forces. Arnold said he put a lot of thought into the decision be-
fore agreeing. “Is it just us that loves this or are there really that many people out there who love it and support it?” Arnold asked himself. Turns out there are plenty of people who would love to own a pinball machine. “A lot of people are redisContinued on A11

Take a walk in downtown Mission and you might discover what many feel is a hidden gem. Often mistaken for an arcade, Nitro Amusements is a showroom for the latest high-tech pinball machines as well as restored games from the 1960s and up. The showroom and repair shop is one of the largest in Western Canada and co-owners Tommy Floyd and Don Arnold say many pinball fanatics are shocked to find it nestled in Mission’s downtown core. Despite being based in Mission, the company caters to customers from across the province, into Alberta, Saskatchewan and across the border. “Being based in Mission works for us. We live here. We support Mission and actively sponsor events. This is a great location,” said Floyd. The idea for the company began five years ago when Floyd started the pinball club Flipper Freaks. He noticed that many mem-

Nostalgia plays a big role in renewed popularity From A9
covering pinball,” said Arnold. The game was immensely popular in the 1970s and customers often search for the machines they used to play in college or at their local arcades. Nostalgia plays a big role for many customers. They remember playing the game as kids and now that they are in their 50s, they have more disposable income. “As mature adults, they have man caves or rec rooms and want to relive those old memories, relive their youth,” said Arnold. Floyd agrees, adding that 90 per cent of sales are to people who want a machine for their games room. But it isn’t just memories that are making pinball popular again. Pinball is in a resurgence. “People are still shocked to discover that new pinball machines are manufactured,” said Floyd, adding that companies like Stern have managed to keep the game alive. “They kept making machines when pinball was in the dark ages.”
In the 1980s, video games, like Nintendo, almost killed pinball. Arcades shut down as gamers stayed at home to play on the new video consoles. But Stern and other companies continued to release new machines with better titles and improved play. Pinball became exciting again. Another company that helped keep pinball alive is Heighway Pinball. “They are the first pinball manufacturing company out of the United Kingdom,” said Floyd. The company’s latest game is called Full Throttle. It is one of the fastest wide-body pinball games ever made. Mission’s Nitro Amusements is the exclusive distributor for Heighway Pinball in Canada. And that’s not the only feather in the local company’s cap. Last month, Floyd and Arnold were in Chicago to attend the Chicago Pinball Expo. At the event, it was announced that Nitro would be the Canadian distributor for Dutch Pinball’s newest release – The Big
Lebowski. The game is based on the popular movie of the same name. “In Canada, the only place to get it is from Mission,” said Floyd proudly. Other new titles that are bringing pinball into the 21st Century include games based on Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead. “There’s an entire generation out there that has missed pinball and it’s a shame because pinball is a great thing that the whole family can do,”
said Arnold. While selling new and refurbished machines and running a repair shop keeps both men busy, they still spend a lot of time organizing the pinball club. “We are hardcore pinheads,” said Floyd. The Flipper Freaks has one of the largest memberships in all of Canada. The group meets the last Saturday of the month, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Nitro Amusements. For more, visit nitroamusements.com.-

I like to keep them happy and I’m a huge kid myself. He put the display together by purchasing a huge amount of decorations and convincing his uncle to sell him many of his old pieces, now that he’s decided to retire the Coquitlam display. In the past, Vendrasco put up the decorations for his four children and the neighbourhood to enjoy, but this year he’s inviting everybody to come by and take a look. He has created a drop box at the front of the display so the public can donate food items or cash for Mission’s food banks. “As long as it goes to helping families, that’s all that matters to me. He will keep the display lit every night, until Dec. 29. He’s already planning to expand the display to 40,000 lights by 2016. Anyone who wants to see the display can drive by 32228 Buffalo Drive in Mission. Don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food item. Christmas displays: Do you have an amazing Christmas display on your Mission home? Brain injury group funded Money will allow association to expand programs The Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association (FVBIA) has received $101,119 in funding to enhance and expand three programs to support people with acquired brain injuries. The FVBIA provides services throughout the Fraser Valley in Mission, Abbotsford, Langley, Chilliwack and Hope. The FVBIA will be able to expand its Pay It Forward program, which focuses on a variety of health and wellness programs for those with an acquired brain injury, into Langley and Mission. As well, the FVBIA will expand its prevention and awareness programs to reach a wider audience and is now able to buy new helmets for the bike safety program in Chilliwack. Additionally, the organization will be able to develop a one-on-one life skills program to help people improve their independence. “Funding for community-based associations has been critically short for years and sometimes the local brain injury groups are the only supports people with acquired brain injuries have,” FVBIA executive director Carol Paetkau said. “The expansion of the programs being offered will make a huge difference in our community,” Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas said. “A brain
injury can happen at any moment and change a life forever. This investment will touch many lives.” In May, the government provided $3 million in funding over three years to the
Brain Injury Alliance, which has distributed funding to organizations in two stages. In the first stage, $10,000 was provided to each of B.C.’s 16 community-based, non-profit brain-injury service
providers to help with operational costs. In the second stage, brain-injury organizations in B.C. receive funding based on applications for programs specific to their needs.

Outlaws earn split
Transmission line maintenance work:
Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
Mission
BC Hydro delivers electricity to you through an extensive transmission and distribution network. Significant investments are needed each year to maintain this system and extend the life of assets to ensure you have a safe, reliable supply of electricity. We’ll be updating equipment and replacing several wood pole structures on a transmission line that runs parallel with Cedar Street in Mission. Staff will be in place as needed to safely direct traffic and pedestrians around the work areas. Pruning or removal of trees and plants around some of the poles may be needed to complete the work. We’ll let you know in advance if any power outages are required. For more information, please contact Stakeholder Engagement at 604 623 4472 or stakeholderengagement@bchydro.com.

A disastrous stretch in the second period cost the Mission Outlaws the game on Friday against the Abbotsford Pilots. Mission had a 2-1 lead after the first period, but the Pilots exploded for four unanswered goals in the second period, and that outburst proved to be enough to hand the Outlaws the loss. The Outlaws battled back in the third, with goals from David McGowan and Brody Dyck, and also rang a shot off the crossbar in the final minute, but ultimately lost 5-4. Dyck and Brock Padgham tallied in the first period for Mission. “I thought we had a really good first period but then we just started running around and kind of got out of our gameplan, said Outlaws head coach Brad Veitch. “We settled back into it in the third period, and we’ve had tendency to do that all season. We’ve been getting away with it for the most part so it’s good for them to know they can’t keep doing it. Down the road they won’t be successful if they keep doing it. Despite the short stretch in the second, Veitch liked his team’s effort. “Everything turned in a five- or six-minute span there, he said. “But
I was happy with the way they responded. They came out in the third and executed the way we wanted them to and made a game out of it. He praised the play of forward Justin Bowerman, who returned from a vicious hit and drew one assist. The Outlaws then came out strong at home on Saturday, crushing the Ridge Meadows Flames 7-1. Mission scored five unanswered goals in the first two periods, and added two more in the third for the win. Goal scorers were: Bryce Pisiak (two), Tyler Wickman, Kolby Steen, Mitchell Biermann, Nate Castonguay, and Noah Wiebe.Wickman, McGowan, Steen, Pisiak and Padgham all recorded three-point nights. Outlaws goalie Jeffrey Veitch stopped 21 of 22 shots for the win. The Outlaws remain tops in the Pacific Junior Hockey League after the weekend, with a record of 19 wins, five losses and one overtime loss. Veitch said it’s been a good first half for his team. “It’s been a good start but there’s still a lot of work to do, he said. “We need to get more healthy and iron out our systems a little bit more. Mission hosts the Pilots on Saturday, with face-off scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at the Mission Leisure Centre.

A holiday tradition Christmas at the Clarke returns The 16th annual Christmas At The Clarke event will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Clarke Theatre in Mission. Appearing at the show are some of the best entertainers and groups from the Fraser Valley and beyond and there will be something for almost everybody’s tastes. Coming back after several years absence is Rob Hess, performing all-time Christmas favorites. He will be joined by the group 1066, who will be entertaining the audience with their Celtic tunes that get the audience clapping and tapping along with the music. The local duo Boilies Goat will also perform, playing the type of blues and light rock that makes them crowd favourites wherever they play. The eight-piece band Horizon will have the audience on their feet, closing the show with blues, rock and roll, gospel and jazz. In addition to the entertainment, there will be a silent auction where items generously donated by businesses and individuals from around the valley will be sold to the highest bidder. There is also a raffle, offering a television, a bike and an e-reader as prizes. Sponsored by Black Press, Prospera Credit Union, Fraser Valley Building Supplies, Country 107.1, Star 98.3, VanCity, Envision and Aldergrove credit unions since it began in 2000, the benefit concert has raised well over $200,000 to support two worthwhile community organizations: the Christmas Bureau, and the shelter programs operated by the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley, which provide assistance to women and children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse. Tickets are $18 for adults. $15 for seniors and students and $10 for children 12 and under. Every cent goes directly to the two organizations. Tickets are available in Mission at London Drugs, Rex Cox Men’s Wear, Shoppers Drug Mart, your local credit unions and Fraser Valley Building Supplies, and in Abbotsford at the House of James. For more information or for group tickets call the show’s founder and producer, John Agnew at 604-826-4903 or the Clarke Foundation Theatre at 604-820-3961.

THE LAW OF KARMA T
The law of Karma might be called the echo principle, i.e., whatever we send out comes back to us, in one form or another. If we are giving off friendly “vibes”, people are likely to respond to us in a friendly way, but on the other hand, if we are giving off hostile or aggressive vibes, people are prone to respond in kind. The law of karma is a special case of the law of attraction, which says that we will attract the things that we think about. If we tend to be cynical in our thinking, we will usually find the selfishness and insincerity that we are looking for. People who suspect that everyone is trying to cheat them tend to treat others suspiciously, and will usually not extend trust to those whom they do not know very well. As a consequence of this kind of treatment (i.e., not being trusted in situations where you would normally expect it), those people who are not extended trust and good faith then fear they are going to be cheated by this untrusting person, since, after all, “it takes one to know one.” The person who has thus not extended trust may be inclined to beat the other person to the punch. If you fear you are going to get hit, why not hit first? However, since people tend to live up to or down to our expectations of them, we ought to expect the best of others. In the long run, we really do get what we give.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. R.S.V. Galatians 6:7 SUNDAY WEST HEIGHTS 9:30AM-Remembrance Meeting AM -Family Bible Hour & Sunday School 11:00 GOSPEL CHAPEL 32060 - 7TH Ave., Mission 826-6915 OR 826-7979

Christmas pantomime Western-themed comedy For the past nine years, Opening Nite Theatre Society has brought its own special brand of pantomime to Mission. This year it’s going to be a western. The Good, The Bad and the Showdown at the Panto Corral – written by Camille Atebe and directed by Trevor Crosby – is a wild, silly, musical romp that the entire family can enjoy. With over-the-top characters, live music, cross-dressing and a talking horse, the show is a local take on the old British Pantomime tradition, which takes an old story and brings it to the stage, adding familiar songs, a dame (always played by a man) and the principal boy and principal girl (both played by women). The audience is invited to cheer and boo the supernatural meddlers of the tale (Fairy Nice and Fairy Naughty, played by Jennie Bice and Camille Atebe) and to voice their encouragement for the rest of the cast. In this year’s tale, the Sheriff has been run out of Sanoosha Gulch by Big Bad Barry the Brutish (played with dastardly dignity by Karen Mortensen) and the rest of the town is living in fear. Only sweet Annabelle (Katie Thompson) isn’t scared of Barry, and she manages to convince the handsome young stranger in town, Young McCoy (Mina Thomas), to take on the job of Sheriff. The show runs Dec. 11-20, and Jan 1-10. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, $30 for a family of four and are available at openingnitetheatre.com, ontstickets@hotmail. com, at 604-826-ONTS or at the door. The theatre is at 33223 Railway Ave.

BLANEY
Audrey (McBURNIE) 1930 - 2015 On Wednesday November 25, 2015, after 85 years of loving and living, Audrey changed her address from earth, joining her Savior Jesus in heaven. Beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, she leaves behind an incredible legacy of love. Audrey was born one of five girls to Boyde and Elsie (Rous) McBurnie on September 18, 1930 in Ottawa, Ontario. She met the love of her life, her high school sweetheart, William ‘Bill’ Blaney. They married October 18, 1952 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Audrey’s greatest joy was time spent with family and friends and was always reaching out a hand to help others. She embraced her role as helpmate to her husband and the raising of their 6 children and taught them love of family, people and laughter. Audrey shared her remarkable Christian faith and the love of Jesus the best way, by living it. She was an active member of Mount Lehman United Church in Abbotsford. She leaves behind a family who loved her dearly. Audrey is survived by her husband of 63 years Bill Blaney, children, Linda Kaye (Kelly), Susan Hogan (Tim), Tom Blaney (Tina), Barbara Windle (Tim), Howard Blaney, and David Blaney, 21 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters Arlene DiPietro (Dan) and Shirley Sharpe (Don), both of Sault Ste. Marie, and numerous nieces and nephews. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents Boyde and Elsie (Rous) McBurnie and sisters Sandra Miller and Lois McKay. Audrey’s Celebration of Life will be held at Church In The Valley, 23589 Old Yale Road, Aldergrove on Thursday December 10th at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Jo Dickey Foundation which was close to Audrey’s heart. Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one’s gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart. For as long as there is a memory, they’ll live on in our hearts. - Author Unknown
