Saanich Police snag $100,000 in stolen property Jacob Zinn News Staff

Saanich Police had to rent a shipping container to store the bulk of more than $100,000 in stolen property they recovered from one home in October. Police used a press conference to highlight the vast amount of property recovered from a residence in the 5800 block of the Pat Bay Highway. The stolen goods included jewelry, construction equipment, power tools, large generators, compressors, snowblowers, pressure washers, at least one vehicle, several licence plates, over 1,000 keys and four firearms – all long guns or rifles. “This is huge,” said Sgt. Steve Eassie. “It’s not uncommon for us to recover stolen property, it’s not uncommon for us to find a cache of stolen property, but I can tell you the amount of property related to this particular incident is bigger than we’ve ever seen. “I think we’re being quite conservative in our estimate of over $100,000. There was a substantial amount of recovered jewelry and some of those items were quite highly priced.” The property was discovered following the arrest of two men by Oceanside RCMP in early October for a break-in at the Qualicum Beach Inn. Information from the investigation indicated a potential link between the suspects and an address in Saanich. In a review of the information, the Saanich Police Street Crime Unit and crime analyst linked a female suspect from a July ATM theft to the Pat Bay Highway address. She, too, was arrested by Oceanside RCMP after she attended to the detachment to recover some of her

Sgt. Steve Eassie stands beside some of the $100,000 in stolen property that was recovered from a residence in the 5800 block of the Pat Bay Highway. The recovery is the biggest he’s seen in his 16 years with the department, noting Saanich Police had to rent a shipping container to store the bulk of the stolen items. personal belongings. She was released on a promise to appear to attend court at a later date. Saanich Police executed a search warrant at the Pat Bay Highway residence, where they found the extensive collection of stolen property. Eassie said the stolen property was taken from as far north as Parksville on Vancouver Island, as well as across the Lower Mainland and as far east as Nelson. “There’s a good possibility that if people have suffered a break-in to their homes or a break-in to their vehicle, we may have some of their property,” he said, noting police have contacted numerous property owners to return their stolen items. “I can tell you we’ve seized well over 200 exhibits at this point.” Eassie said dozens of sets of financial documents and identification were recovered, but noted the police have not connected any incidents of identity theft or identity fraud to the property they seized. Darren George Chernoff, 45, and Zoe Jacqueline Thompson, 26, each face 45 charges for the property theft, including 17 counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, 19 counts of dealing with

an identity document without excuse, five counts of possession of a weapon obtained through an offence, one count of unsafe storage of a firearm and one count of break and enter and commit theft. Chernoff is currently in custody, awaiting a further court appearance in early December, in addition to his court dates from the Oceanside arrest. Thompson failed to appear in court on Nov. 17 and is believed to have fled to the Lower Mainland. A warrant for her arrest has been issued. In an effort to return the remaining property to its rightful owners, the Saanich Police will be posting photographs of the stolen property on its website. To view the photos, visit saanichpolice.ca. Local groups not sold on interchange plans Travis Paterson News Staff

Despite a renewed commitment to public consultation by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the community associations to be directly impacted by the new McKenzieAdmirals Interchange are still hoping for a better design proposal than the three delivered on Nov. 17. The good news for community associations is most believe they’ll continue to communicate with MOTI beyond the Dec. 11 deadline for public feedback on the project. However, there is some concern that despite lengthy meetings with locals, the provincially tasked project group isn’t focused on the strategies set out over the past 20 years, said Rob Wickson, president of the Gorge Tillicum Community Association. “If you look at the proposals, [MOTI] hasn’t given us three options, it’s one option with three designs,” Wickson said. “They haven’t really considered by any ranking system public transit, walkability or cycling, and the focus remains on single occupancy vehicles.” On Nov. 17, the province put forth three proposals to redesign the McKenzieAdmirals Interchange with the Trans-Canada Highway. Of the province’s three design proposals, two are known as diamond freeway interchanges, with the TCH running either under or above McKenzie-

Ministry of Transportation photo

This is one of the three design options outlined by the province for the McKenzie-Admirals intersection on Highway 1. Admirals. The third is a partial cloverleaf that uses a portion of Cuthbert Holmes Park. None contain stop lights or include future options for rapid transit besides the potential for a bus lane, which is short sighted, Wickson said. When Gorge Tillicum also released a proposal of its own last month, it also supported an underpass for continuous TCH traffic. However, the underpass is only for continuous TCH westbound traffic, not eastbound. As Wickson points

out, by retaining an eastbound TCH traffic light, it will calm the build up at Tillicum Road, which is sure to back up during peak hours once the McKenzieAdmirals light is removed. “I go back to the first question I had on this project: what issues are we trying to solve?” Wickson said. “[If] Tillicum becomes a three or four light back up, [that becomes a] place commuters will try to escape from and find a through route on side roads.” For now, local partners such as First Nations, the District of

Saanich, City of Victoria, the Capital Regional District and community associations are continuing to communicate with the MOTI project group. It’s still very early in the discussion, said CRD transportation planner John Hicks. Some meetings are to sort out the location of water mains, while others tackle the priorities of how to best accommodate the Galloping Goose Trail. The McKenzie-Admirals interchange project guide, for its part, says MOTI will bring

back the next series of designs for a second period of public consultation in the winter or spring. Richard Dominy, president of the Residents Association of Strawberry Vale, Marigold and Glanford, said his vision of the McKenzie-Admirals Interchange isn’t impeded by lights on exits or on the TCH. It also creates a lane for bike and pedestrian traffic so that they don’t have to cross a traffic lane. “Perhaps they go under, over, or on the side,” Dominy said. Dominy also spoke to the concern of spill-off traffic during the two-year construction period. “What plans are being made, where is the traffic going to go anytime there’s a problem on the Trans-Canada?” he asked. As it is, commuters fill up side streets on Burnside, Prospect Lake Road and all the way up to Hastings in rural Saanich. “Wherever they can make a track to get through.” For Wickson, there is still the lingering debate of Victoria’s longstanding, and possibly forgotten, motive to lessen downtown traffic. “Originally, when this was debated 20 years ago Victoria wasn’t too interested in a freeway running downtown,” Wickson said. “Turns out, it’s not more cars that make a vibrant downtown … it’s the people.” Feedback for the current McKenzie-Admirals Interchange is welcome until Dec. 11 through online feedback at engage.gov. bc.ca/mckenzieinterchange or by emailing mckenzieinterchange@ gov.bc.ca.

Police report spike in vehicle break-ins for Saanich Jacob Zinn News Staff

Saanich Police are reminding residents to lock their cars following a rash of vehicle break-ins in the Broadmead area. Sgt. Steve Eassie said police have noticed a “dramatic increase” in break-ins of unlocked vehicles, though the thieves have only made off with loose change, wallets, IDs and gift cards. “Over the last two weeks, there has been at least 17 incidents that have been reported to us – those are numbers that we don’t often see,” said Eassie. “In

virtually all of the circumstances that we’re speaking about, the vehicles were left unlocked.” Eassie said the rise in break-ins could be attributed to the time of year, when people are buying gift cards as Christmas presents and perhaps leaving them in their vehicles. While he didn’t have an estimate of how much money or value in gift cards has been stolen, he said the thieves have oddly overlooked some more big-ticket items left in vehicles. “Some of the gift cards have been between $50 and $100, but most of it has been loose change,” he said. “Even some of

the more highly valued items such as iPads and cellphones have not been taken. It’s a bit removed from the norm where they’re looking for higher priced items.” The break-ins occurred on the following streets: the 700 block of Sayward Road, 700 block of Menawood Place, 5300 block of Sayward Hill Crescent, 5300 block of Sunters Track, 4800 block of Cherry Tree Bend, 700 block of Haliburton Road, 4800 block of Wesley Road, 800 block of Alvarado Terrace, 700 block of Bossi Place, 900 block of Seamist Rise, 800 block of Seamist Place and 4700 block of Amblewood Drive.

Relax. Enjoy. The Qualicum Beach Inn Invites You for Christmas & New Years.

As of yet, police don’t have a suspect, but they believe it may be related to someone who recently moved into the area. Eassie also noted the break-ins occurred on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, saying those days could be targeted based on shopping habits. Eassie said the best thing residents can do to protect their belongings is to lock their vehicles or store gift cards and presents inside their homes. “If your (cars) are locked and your neighbours’ are not, your neighbours are the ones that are going to be hit, not yours,” said Eassie.

Students raise awareness of organ donation Jacob Zinn News Staff

Claremont students just might save your life, and you might not even know it. Last week, the David Foster Foundation announced Operation Registration, a pilot project in partnership with the secondary school to raise awareness of the importance of organ donor registration among youth. Students at Claremont Secondary attended a detailed presentation about organ donation and how donating your heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, lungs and small intestines when you die can tremendously impact the lives of others. “Organ donation is something that happens after you die, and that’s a really difficult thing to talk about,” said Claremont teacher Lia Michalski. “It’s kind of morbid, but that decision to sign a registration form could potentially save eight people’s lives. “For me, that’s just kind of a no-brainer. When I’m gone, I would love to help somebody else live.” The DFF financially supports the non-medical expenses of families whose children are undergoing major organ transplants, and works to raise awareness of organ donation and registration in Canada. According to the foundation, 85 per cent of Canadians say they agree with registering as anPMorgan donor, but fewer than 9:32 20 per cent do. Additionally, in 2012, 4,500 Canadians were

Fedrigo and Hoffecker talked about how they met with two families who had gone through at least one organ transplant each, and how hearing their stories first-hand affected them. “Not only was this experience incredibly eye-opening for us, but it also gave us a new emotional perspective to organ donation,” said Hoffecker.

“What really made a big impression on us is how, even years after their organ transplant, they’re still working with the David Foster Foundation because they feel so strongly about the work the foundation does, and also the importance of organ transplants,” said Fedrigo. While David Foster could not attend the presentation, he prepared a video for the Claremont students encouraging them to register as organ donors. “Every one of us is going to die of something – it might be cancer, it might be heart disease, or maybe organ failure,” he said. “Of those three things, there is one that we can eliminate right now with your help.” For more information about organ donor registration or Operation Registration, visit transplant.bc.ca or davidfosterfoundation.com.

OUR VIEW

We all have the ability to answer someone’s prayer As we officially enter into the giving season, a group of Saanich students is providing a lesson to us all in what can be achieved through working on behalf of others Students at Claremont secondary have teamed with the David Foster Foundation for Operation Registration, a pilot project to raise the awareness of the importance of organ donor registration among youth. According to the foundation, 85 per cent of Canadians say they see the benefits in registering as an organ donor, but fewer than 20 per cent do. There are currently 508 people in B.C. waiting for an organ transplant. They could be your neighbours or family members, waiting for news that would brighten Christmas for them and their families. But their needs aren’t something that can be found under the Christmas tree. It’s up to all of us to try and answer their prayers, as what they so desperately need is in each of us to give. In 2012, there were 4,500 Canadians waiting for life-saving organ transplants, but only 2,124 patients received transplants in that time, as 256 patients died while waiting for an organ. That’s 256 Canadians who didn’t receive a second chance at life that we could have given them. There’s no doubt that we can, and should, be doing more. There’s no excuse for healthy Canadians not to register as organ donors. And it’s never too late, as there is no age limit for donating your organs. The oldest organ donor in Canada was 93, while B.C.’s oldest donor was 79. And the decision to sign a registration form could potentially save the lives of eight people. It’s something too important for any of us to put off for another day. “Every one of us is going to die of something – it might be cancer, it might be heart disease, or maybe organ failure,” David Foster told the Claremont students. “Of those three things, there is one that we can eliminate right now with your help.” What do you think? Terrorism a result of plundering region’s resources Re: the Nov. 20 editorial “We can’t let terrorist destroy our humanity”. The media does a disservice by presenting a distorted analysis of terrorism, ignoring its political, geographical and historical causes, preferring instead to propagate simplistic sound bites and sanctimonious platitudes. France has currently 21,000 troops deployed in different African nations, mostly populated by Muslims. France has been in the forefront of military actions in Afghanistan, Syria, Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso. The NATO-French indiscriminate military operations have created a fertile soil for extremists and their deranged ideas and criminal practices. Terrorism is the weapon of those who don’t have – unlike their enemies – guided missiles, intelligent bombs, drones, powerful navies or air force. Asymmetric war, as practiced by NATO, ISIS and other criminals, knows no boundaries, gender, combatants’ status, age, religious adherence, political affiliation or country. The difference between NATO and ISIS is that one is endorsed by established and recognized governments, the other one is not.

Dan Ebenal Editor 250-480-3262 editor@saanichnews.com

An “intelligent” drone bomb dropped on a wedding, a neighbourhood or a hospital is not different than one exploded in a theatre: in both cases innocent people dies for no reason. ISIS and its dangerous disciples are the direct result of imperialist confrontations, wars of aggression and geopolitical control of the area’s rich resources going back to the ‘60s and continuing at the present with new faces, but with the same imperialistic intentions of yesteryear: plundering of resources. Failure to recognize the historical and political context will confirm George Santayana’s comments: “Those who don’t remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Terrorism is ultimately a political problem. Saanich Police are investigating a serious car crash into a house in the 1500 block of Kenmore Road that occurred around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Car crashes into Saanich home Jacob Zinn News Staff

Some Gordon Head residents had a rude awakening after a silver Hyundai Accent drove through two fences and crashed into a home in the 1500 block of Kenmore Road early Wednesday morning. Shortly after 3 a.m., police received a call about the late-night accident and responded, along with the Saanich Fire Department and B.C. Ambulance Service. The crash caused significant structural damage, as the vehicle hit one of the supporting corners of the house. “Structural integrity is an issue – it was an issue for our firefighters last night,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen with Saanich Police. “That’s why the vehicle has been left in place for fear of pulling it out and causing more damage.” Jantzen said the occupants of the vehicle appear to be two local teenage girls, who fled the scene of the accident and were later tracked down by police. “There was more than one witness that confirmed for us that two people fled the area,” he said, noting police brought out a K-9 officer in their search efforts. “Oddly enough, while this was happening and we were actively searching, one of the parents of one of the occupants contacted the

Victoria Police, and that led to one of our officers actually speaking with one young lady [early Wednesday].” He said police haven’t determined the cause of the accident and aren’t sure if drugs or alcohol were a factor. He added that the occupants of the home were uninjured, and that the police report described any other injuries as minor. In addition to emergency services, B.C. Hydro was called to the scene as the crash caused a local blackout for houses in the immediate area. Jantzen said it’s too early for charges to be recommended and Saanich Police are expected to continue their investigation, including interviewing other witnesses.

Claremont stages High School Christmas Carol Jacob Zinn News Staff

What if Ebenezer Scrooge was more like Regina George? Equally cold-hearted, but a teenage cheer squad queen bee instead of an elderly pennypinching curmudgeon. Starting this week, the students from Claremont Secondary’s year-long drama program are presenting a modern twist on the Charles Dickens classic with High School Christmas Carol, in what can only be described as Mean Girls meets Scrooged. The production is set at West End High and features Meredith Priestly, the most popular girl in school, as its mean-spirited protagonist. “She’s rich, she’s very entitled – she feels like she’s better than everyone else, but I think it’s a wall she puts up,” said Grade 12 student Cassandra Husk, who portrays Priestly. “She does have a soft side. “It’s a super fun role to play,” added Husk, who’s been performing since she was 10. “I

Tess Kotchonoski and Steven Hao - Grade 10 students at Claremont Secondary - play ghostly cheerleaders in the school’s production of High School Christmas Carol, a Mean Girls-esque take on the Charles Dickens classic. The ghosts visit West End High’s queen bee Meredith Priestley (played by Cassandra Husk, centre) and warn her to treat people better - or else! really enjoy it. It’s very different than me.” Fellow senior Joscelyne Tamburri plays the supporting lead Melissa Barclay, Priestly’s best friend and a stark contrast from high school royalty. “She’s really rich and really vain while I am really poor, I live in a trailer, my family’s gone, I just have a sister who’s dying and I’m trying to find the positive side of life,” said Tamburri, noting she’s the Bob Cratchit of the story. “Meredith treats her absolutely horribly, but she’s the most sweet and sincere person. willing to do anything for her friends. “She’s kind of a doormat, but she’s actually really strong when it comes to her family. You get to see the whole arc of the character.” Throughout the course of the play, Priestley mistreats just about everyone until she’s visited by ghosts of West End High past, who warn her that her stuck-up attitude affects the people around her. “They’re very different – they’re all so funny,” said Husk of the ghosts. “Some of the ghosts come in pairs. We have three ghosts that are ex-cheerleaders like her.” “In the very end, when Meredith gets her epiphany, she finally comes up to everyone – especially Melissa – and apologizes because she wants to make it right and really help her get out of her situation,” said Tamburri. The play was selected by drama teacher Colin Plant for its familiarity, and a certain quality that most plays don’t have. “This version of A Christmas Carol appealed to me because it was metatheatrical – it has a play within a play, so that makes it fun for me as a theatre director,” he said. Additionally, he said the high school setting adds to the believability of the performers and is likely more interesting for Claremont students than a traditional retelling of Dickens’

original play. “It took a story that everyone has heard many times and set it in an environment that students could relate to. The opportunity to connect with the characters they’re playing is much higher. I don’t think it has to always be set in the 1800s with Victorian England and Scrooge as this white, middleaged banker.” This production has been two-and-a-half months in the making, with a 15-student crew from the stagecraft class working with the drama students – from Grade 9 to 12 – to put together the outstanding show. “The students, by the time this is done, will probably have put in about 125 hours,” said Plant. Claremont is using the performance as a fundraiser for the Mustard Seed food bank. Tickets are $10, available at the door, but attendees who bring a non-perishable food item can receive a dollar off the price of admission, with a maximum discount of $5. “It’s a little way that the students spread the Christmas cheer and the spirit of giving back outside of what’s happening onstage,” said Plant. The play runs nightly at 7:30 p.m. from Dec. 2 to 5 and 9 to 12, and while it’s set at a high school, the cast assures it’s a great show for all ages. “Families should come and see it,” said Husk. “It’s funny to kids and adults – it’s just a good show.”

Saanich’s newest piece of public art will be unveiled on the Craigflower Bridge on Wednesday. The opening starts at 2 p.m. at the neighbouring Craigflower Schoolhouse, 2755 Admirals Rd. It is the official launch of Vancouver artist Blake Williams’ project, which followed the Saanich theme of “Bridging Perspectives.” “It’s a steel frame and structure, people will interpret the [piece] in different ways,” said Williams, who is known to work with kiln-fired ceramic porcelain and glass surfaces. “The idea is it’s a curving form that I thought was a metaphor for the curving of the Gorge as it moves inland from the Inner Harbour.”

This illustration shows what Blake Williams’ installation will look like on Craigflower Bridge. The steel and concrete boasts a glass form approximately 10 feet long,

curving flow of the Gorge Waterway while the imagery is influenced by the history of the site and the Garry oak trees that are found in the vicinity of the bridge. It will sit on the north end of Craigflower Bridge. The project is a result of support and encouragement from the Gorge Tillicum Community Association and was funded by the District of Saanich in connection with the reconstruction of the bridge. A request for proposals was released in January 2015 and a five-member jury, including a representative from the local Gorge Tillicum Community Association, chose the winning work of art from the submissions of 20 different artists.

Saanich is adding another park to its grand inventory as council approved entering a 99-year occupation lease of CraigflowerKosapsom Park. The licence allows Saanich to make adjustments and improvements to the park as it sees fit. In 2003 the province approached Saanich with an offer to transfer ownership of the heritage registered Craigflower Schoolhouse, originally Maple Point School, commissioned by Kenneth McKenzie and built in 1853. Though Saanich is only taking control of the Craigflower-Kosapsom Park now, it has been providing the maintenance on the grounds for years. The provincial-owned Schoolhouse itself took on a new tenant in 2015 with the Hallmark Heritage Society.

Floating the new Audi A4 in a city without blacktop DrivewayCanada.ca |

Visit the Audi gallery at DrivewayCanada.ca

Front-wheel drive vehicles and a manual transmission option will debut later. The A4’s appearance is only subtly different from the last version but after much work in the wind tunnel, its reshaping had yielded substantial aerodynamic improvements. Inside the cabin expect some classy touches: fine grain ash wood inlays lifts and chrome trims raise the A4 in the elegance stakes. The optional revamped MultiMedia Interface (MMI) system enables the driver to keep eyes on the road ahead by reducing the interactions needed to deliver what functions the driver wants to operate. Shortcut buttons for some common functions server the same safety purpose. The centre console houses a wireless smartphone charger and you can display your phone apps in a larger format on the tablet-like display. Rear passengers can entertain themselves via a removable tablet – also an option. It has crash proof glass!

I mentioned how quiet the cabin is but you can fix that if you opt for the Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system. A blast of ZZ Top wiped the skeptical smirk from my visage, born of the ‘3D audio” reference. I looked round twice to see if we had some bearded weirdos in the ample back seats. Techno and safety nuts will be impressed with the list of passive and active safety equipment available either as standard or optional extras. These include adaptive cruise control, traffic jam and active lane assists, and self-parking that responds to road markings, radar and satellite navigation data to keep the car on the straight and narrow. That technology enables the A4 to cruise up to 65 km/h autonomously, as long as you place your hands on the wheel every few seconds combing your hair or picking your nose. If you don’t you get a loud reminder! One wit suggested carrying mini clamps to replace your hands and enable you to snooze. The current model base price is $38,500, don’t expect the prices for the three iterations of the 2017 model to vary too much in the bottom line.

!

Venice, Italy – Can you believe that Audi would invite the world’s media to attend the launch of its 2017 A4 in a town where signs limit speed to seven km/h on most of its main streets? Launch for the non-amphibious craft is probably an appropriate descriptor for the event, given the streets of this world heritage site are all under water and the main means to get from A to B is by motor launch. If romance is on your mind, of course, you can hail a gondolier. Then you stare into your beloved’s eyes as your blue-hoop shirted man propels you slowly under steeply arched bridges along the Grand Canal, past awe inspiring examples of architecture from another time. The classy and cultured number greatly among Audi owners so it’s perhaps no surprise that the German manufacturer would take us to a place so rich in art and exquisite form. Ensconced at the Isole delle Rose island resort we learned of by Keith Morgan the new model’s attributes in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere away from the typical city noise. Then we headed for the dry land of the Veneto region, north of the city, to put the machine through its paces through urban traffic, freeways, rural wine country routes and high into the mountains, ascending and descending along serpentine roads. Its driving attributes can be summed up thusly: plenty of perk in the turbo charged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine, providing more than adequate propulsion to scale the heights and pass the freeway laggards – smoothly – greatly aided by a responsive seven-speed transmission. Played with the paddle shifters for fun while luging down the steep mountain side but didn’t feel the need to experiment with them for most of the drive. The cornering on the twisties was ‘A1’ in the A4, thanks to substantial technical improvements to the suspension. It’s darned quiet too. We are not going to see the A4 on Canadian roads until late spring. There are seven power plants available globally but we will get just the 2.0-litre gas engine at launch. The gas version generates 252 horsepower and a diesel – which we should get eventually – puts out 190. No, it’s not the same engine that has caused so much grief for Audi’s VW parent. No fuel economy numbers yet but, for what it’s worth at this stage, Audi is promising substantial improvements over the current combined city/ highway of 8.9 L/100kms for the gas engine. Our A4s will all have Quattro four-wheel drive and the seven-speed dual clutch S-Tronic transmission.

Promising national level swimmers Molly Gowans and Lauren Crisp will compete in a full slate of races at this weekend’s Christmas Cracker, which brings 800 swimmers to Saanich Comoonwealth Place.

1561 Hillside Ave., Victoria 250-370-2984

The signs bearing the city’s best swimmers hang above a door only the swimmers, coaches and lifeguards would know in Saanich Commonwealth Place. Michael Phelps is up there with three pool records which he holds to this day, thanks to a strong showing at the 2006 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. Ryan Cochrane is also up there, although he’d be up there twice if it wasn’t for a pesky 1994 Commonwealth Games 1,500-metre record by Australian Kieren Perkins. And now, thanks to a breakout year, 16-year-old Molly Gowans and 15-year-old Lauren Crisp are up there as well, five times each for setting new records for the Pacific Coast Swimming Club. This weekend nearly 800 swimmers, plus coaches and volunteers from clubs across B.C. and Alberta, will flow through the door below those records onto the Commonwealth pool deck for the annual Pacific Coast Swimming Christmas Cracker. “It’s a really big undertaking, one of the biggest competitions in Canada every year, bigger than senior national championships and the same size as age group national championships,” said PCS coach Rod Barratt, director of athlete development. “This runs on the backs of those folks who are taking the time, often out of work, to be time keepers and organizers, a huge undertaking in terms of time and energy,” Barratt said. “It’s like organizing the marathon or another big event, only it runs all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a whole lead up.” PLEASE SEE: Commonwealth Place plays host to weekend meet, Page A15

SAANICH SAANICH NEWS NEWS -- Friday, Friday, December December 4, 4, 2015 2015

Saanich grads join in Vanier Cup win Saanich’s Quinn Van Gylswyk capped his CIS All-Canadian season with a dramatic, gameending field goal to win the Vanier Cup national football championship. On Saturday, Van Gylswyk kicked a 20-yard field goal with time expired to clinch the 26-23 win for the UBC Thunderbirds over the Université de Montréal Carabins. It’s the T-Birds first Vanier Cup since 1997, played in front of 12,557 people at Laval University. “It’s just incredible. I never thought this was possible,” Van Gylswyk told the Thunderbirds’ website. Van Gylswyk was attempting

to kick a field goal with 1:32 left but a bad snap foiled that. Luckily, the Thunderbirds recovered the ball on an interception by A. J. Blackwell to give UBC another chance. And Van Gylswyk took full advantage. “The defence got us the ball back at the end, which was huge,” Van Gylswyk said. “To be honest, I was devastated [after that bad snap]. I knew it was going to come down to a lastsecond field goal. Montreal is a strong team. It’s just awesome.” Van Gylswyk, a former Westshore Rebel junior football player and Spectrum Community School graduate,

made all four field goal attempts. His first three were 45, 33 and 43 yards. Also featured in the game were the high school superstar Davis brothers, Terrell (third year) and Marcus (second year), of the Mount Douglas Rams. Marcus caught nine passes for 98 yards, including one of UBC’s two touchdowns, a second quarter reception. He also ran back four kick returns for 80 yards and five punt returns for 35 yards. Terrell Davis, at linebacker, shared the team lead in tackles as he had four solo and assisted on seven more. reporter@saanichnews.com

Commonwealth Place plays host to weekend meet Continued from Page A14

For Gowans, it’s a chance to swim for fun, a full schedule of races without the added stress of competition, as it is for most of the swimmers. “With the Christmas Cracker, it’s a lot of fun, you just go race and see where you’re at,” Gowans said. For the little ones, swimming starts with meets such as the Christmas Cracker with the hopes it could someday be a training stop for an Olympic campaign. And that’s exactly where Gowans and Crisp are, as every day, and week, is part of a buildup to peak at the April Olympic trials in Toronto. Gowans was just in England with coach Barratt where she swam in some local meets against top age group and Olympic-calibre swimmers while Barratt shared time with other high-performance directors. “It’s nice to come home and train with everyone, we’re family here,” Gowans said. Earlier this year the Claremont secondary student won silver in the 1,500-metre free and 400m free events at the senior nationals. Granted, most of Canada’s elite swimmers were away. She also cleaned up among all competitors her age at the age grade national championships, winning the freestyle 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m events for 15-year-olds, silver in 100m, and gold in the 200m backstroke. “I don’t know if it’s the [absolute] best thing to prioritize on swimming but I love it,” Gowans said. Crisp, a backstroke specialist, also came off a big summer, winning bronze in the 200m at the Western Canada Summer Games and winning the B final in the 200m backstroke at the senior nationals. Grappling with the fact she’s likely to be in the same water with a group of Rio de Janeiro hopefuls this spring has been surreal for Crisp, #4

who moved to Reynolds secondary this year. “When I was younger I thought, ‘Yeah, I totally want to go to the Olympics,’ but now that I’m preparing for an Olympic trial part of me is like, ‘I don’t know if I can’,” Crisp said. “The other part of me is like, ‘What happens if I keep pushing hard and one day make it’.” Crisp admits this year will be a tough Olympic team to crack but sees it as a win-win. “This year is all for experience, I just want to swim my best race against the best Olympians and up-and-comers. Maybe 2020 will be a good opportunity.” For now, Crisp is happy to swim in the familiar waters of Commonwealth Place, where her name shares wall space with the region’s, and country’s, best swimmers. “It’s cool just seeing your name up there and others seeing it, and getting that recognition, especially knowing I’m up there with the names I was always looking up to.”

Putting home controls at your fingertips Jacob Zinn News Staff

It may seem like something out of Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous or MTV Cribs, but smart home automation is steadily becoming an affordable luxury for the average homeowner. The OneTouch House specializes in home automation, allowing homeowners to natively or remotely control their home theatres, lighting, temperature and security cameras at the push of a button. The Saanich company can sync a broad range of technological devices to work in harmony, creating the perfect sense of atmosphere for any home. “What we try to do is make a home that’s ubiquitous – everything’s together in one place and easy to use,” said co-owner Martin Engelbrecht. “All these systems are related to one another through our system. “With the advent of the smartphone, that’s when it really took off. It’s not just the house on the hill, it’s available for everybody. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s not prohibitively expensive. The OneTouch House started in 1999 as a regional installer for Shaw Direct, but soon turned to emerging technological trends and began working with sound and lighting systems. For the last decade or so, Engelbrecht and fellow co-owner Kevin Lintern have been giving homeowners greater control of their homes for whatever best suits their lifestyles. “There are many lighting systems out there and HVAC systems and music systems, and true home automation ties all those systems together so they can talk to one another,” said Englebrecht. “When I press my automated door lock to lock my doors, because it’s on the central system, it can tell my

All those actions can happen from a single action.” Using a single app on a smartphone or tablet, homeowners can monitor their security cameras, cool down their house when they’re away or turn their lights on or off – the options are almost endless and it’s all at their fingertips. The OneTouch House is adept at the installation and customization of a variety of systems – including home theatres and security cameras – for your average home to a mega mansion. Engelbrecht said their team is experienced in

setting up robust home networks to communicate with a homeowners’ devices, and the integration of one’s technological systems allows for better organization with fewer remote controls and gadgets to worry about. However, recognizing that not every homeowner may want all the bells and whistles, Engelbrecht said they can be selective in what features they want for their home. “Some people want media and entertainment, some people are only interested in lighting, some people want energy management, some people want it all – it really does vary,” he said, noting

homeowners can also build their home automation system piece by piece. “It’s homeowner-driven and it’s there to match their lifestyle.” While there isn’t much that hasn’t been accomplished in home automation, Engelbrecht said they’re always looking at emerging technologies that can fall under their automation systems’ umbrella. “There’s just so many applications of what you can do with the technology,” he said. “It’s what keeps the job interesting.” For more information about home automation, visit theonetouchhouse.com.

With the Oriole in refit, the Molly Malone will lead the parade of lighted boats Friday night along the shores of Saanich and Oak Bay. Fittingly, the 136-foot vessel will have Royal Victoria Yacht Club Commodore Andrew McBride at the helm. Traditionally HMCS Oriole leads the annual parade, but McBride, also the co-ordinator of the 10th annual Sea of Lights at RVYC, figures he’s up to the task. “I’m going to try and fill the void, make my boat look bigger. I do have something like 3,000 lights,” he said. Organizers hope to get the same number of boats as last year, 15 to 17, depending if you count the paddle boarder who donned lights last year and the two RCM-SAR units that accompany the parade. Some of the pilots will get a doubledose of holiday sailing with the big Victoria event the next night. “Many of the

The best viewing spots are at Cattle Point around 7 p.m. followed by Willows Beach Park about 7:15 p.m. and Cadboro Bay at about 7:45. “If we’re going to do any tricks that’s where we’re going to do it,” said McBride. At Willows Beach Park, where Recreation

Oak Bay hosts the family viewing, a big bonfire helps keep bodies warm and the Oak Bay Kiwanis offer hot chocolate and treats by donation. At Gyro, the Garry Oak Sea Scouts will have a hand in doling out warming goodies. “It also benefits the Salvation Army, so we ask people to bring food and money donations,” said Charlotte Gann.

McBride said the annual event offers on opportunity for a good time for both boaters and viewers. “It’s great for the community, gets people out and allows us to mess around in boats in the dark,” McBride said. “It’s fun. The club is often seen as a stodgy old boys place, but it really isn’t. This is an opportunity for us to be more outward.”
