Weddings on Fraser Valley farms may become a thing of the past, if stricter rules for agricultural land use in B.C. are adopted. Caroline Mosterman, who owns CPM Farms on Sumas Prairie, has hosted weddings, fundraisers, and garden club events on her land for six years. With blueberry fields and a water plant nursery on the farm, the venue has built-in outdoor ambience. But on Sept. 28, the Agricultural Land Commission delivered a stop-work order, telling her to cancel all non-farm events. “It’s going to be crippling to the agri-tourism industry,” Mosterman said. There were five weddings scheduled for this fall, plus more in 2016 and 2017. She has been told she needs to apply for a nonfarm use permit to start hosting events again – a process that requires local and provincial approval and can take up to two years. It was one of many stop-work orders issued by the ALC to B.C. farms this year, including some in Chilliwack, Langley, Kelowna and on Vancouver Island. Farm weddings may be permanently off the table if a proposal from the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, which specifically labels “commercial weddings” as a non-farm use, is adopted. Firefighters rescued a horse that fell into a ditch on Saturday afternoon on Lefeuvre Road in the Glen Valley area of north Abbotsford. The horse was apparently spooked during a group ride and slid into the ditch, which was partially filled with water. Firefighters from Hall 8 and auxiliary crew from Hall 5 were assisted by riders from the group, and passersby. The horse, named Fraser, appeared to be OK, but a veterinarian was called to the scene to ensure it had not been injured.

For six years, CPM Farms in Abbotsford has hosted weddings on their active blueCourtesy Caroline Mosterman berry and water plant farm. posal from the ministry of agriculture is much more specific, and it also would limit farms on ALR to only receive agri-tourism income equal to or less than their yearly farming income. Mosterman, who has farmed livestock and produce, thinks this financial benchmark doesn’t make sense. Fluctuating commodity prices can make a small farm’s income vary widely from year to year – and in especially lean
years, even small events like hay rides could run afoul of the proposed rules. She’s banded together with a group of other ALR farmers from across the province, including seven from the Valley, who call themselves the B.C. Agri-Tourism Farming Association, to lobby the province to loosen the rules. “The effects will be socially and financially massive … We’re not the only farm that is affected,” Mosterman
said. “We just feel that weddings on farmland should be an acceptable use of farmland. Our sales in our nursery have increased substantially since we started hosting events … (they) are attracting people to the farm.” The ministry has proposed a set of rules local governments would need to adopt into bylaws to regulate ALR farms. According to the ministry, it’s in response to

celled this September. “I’m absolutely devastated,” said Miller. She and her fiancé, Steve Kirton, live in Surrey, and they looked all over the Lower Mainland to find a unique site within their budget. “If we don’t find another venue we might have to move our date into 2017,” she said. Shyla Slade, an Abbotsford wedding planner and the owner of Valley Weddings, says her clients are more interested in different venues like farms than traditional spots such as hotel banquet rooms. “It will definitely affect my business,” said Slade. “I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of other options for brides in the Valley.” The proposal deals with what farmers can and can’t do on the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), B.C.’s provincially protected farmland. Current ALR rules allow “seasonal agri-tourism,” but they’re less clear about what qualifies. The pro-
local governments asking for more clarity, but the City of Abbotsford says the proposal would pose problems. Mayor Henry Braun worries that limiting agri-tourism income to be equal or less than farm income would be a costly hassle to enforce, requiring the city to examine farmers’ accounting records. But on the issue of weddings and other events, Braun said the city can’t voice a position – all Abbotsford can do is enforce the ministry and ALC’s definitions of non-farm use. The ministry was going to stop accepting comments about the proposal on Nov. 30, but in response to pressure has extended the deadline to Jan. 15, 2016. Mosterman thinks the extra time is much-needed. “I think it’d be prudent to wait. It’d be foolish to push this through,” she said. Representatives from the ministry of agriculture did not return News’ requests for comment by press time.

Walker said local citizens have given their “overwhelming support” for use of the cameras. Members of both the APD’s and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit’s gang enforcement teams will continue to operate in the Townline Hill and other areas of Abbotsford, he said. Police Chief Bob Rich said the APD continues to take a “proactive approach” to combatting the issue. “The APD will continue to deal with the ongoing conflict and threat to public safety as a top priority. We will not stop until public safety is restored,” he said. Walker said police are continuing to encourage residents to report suspicious activity by calling 911 or the APD non-emergency line at 604-859-5225 or texting abbypd (222973). People with information about gang activity and other criminal behaviour should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the APD Tip Line at 604-8644777. Both lines allow callers to provide information anonymously.

Abbotsford Police say they have caused a “major disruption” to the drug trade that has fueled the Townline Hill gang conflict, with the arrests of three men last Thursday. Herman Sidhu, 25, has been charged with 13 counts of trafficking in a controlled substance, while Bhavdeep Deol, 26, has been charged with two counts of the same offence. The two were previously sentenced for assaulting a man outside an Abbotsford pub in 2010. A third man, 27-yearold David Karl Elliott, has been charged with one count of drug trafficking. The trio were arrested Thursday afternoon after drug search warrants were executed at the Deol home in the 30600 block of Curlew Drive and at the Sidhu residence in the 3500 block of Summit Drive. Const. Paul Walker said police seized from the two homes two pounds of MDMA (ecstasy), 26 ounces of cocaine and a small amount of heroin. The drugs had an estimated street value of $70,000. They also seized drug paraphernalia, $6,000 cash and two vehicles, Walker said. Walker described the men who have been charged as “medium- to high-level” traffickers who allegedly would have had access to “large quantities” of drugs. He said a “variety of resources” were used in the investigation over the last couple of months, leading to the arrests on Thursday by members of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) emergency response team and the crime re-
duction unit. Elliott and Sidhu were apprehended in the Highstreet shopping centre parking lot, while Deol was arrested at the home on Curlew Drive. Walker said the men are allegedly involved in the ongoing Townline Hill conflict, which has seen two groups of young men battling for drug turf for well over a year. The dispute has included several driveby shootings and two killings. Harwin Baringh, 18, was shot to death in October 2014 while in an SUV on Sparrow Drive. Ping Shun Ao, 74, died on Sept. 2 of this year when he was struck by a stray bullet intended for a person living in the home next door to him on Promontory Court. Charges have not yet been laid in either murder. Deol and Sidhu both have prior criminal records. They served conditional sentences of 12 months and nine months, respectively, in 2012 after each pleading guilty to assault

K-7 changes hit opposition Parents say not enough notice of proposal Tyler OLSEN

What will it take for you to act on your hearing loss?
Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford school district’s proposal to reconfigure six rural schools in Abbotsford has met with opposition from some parents. Last week, the district unveiled a proposal to reconfigure its remaining kindergarten-to-Grade 7 schools to match its 24 other kindergarten-to-Grade 5 elementary schools. The move, which would take effect next year, would impact Aberdeen, Bradner, Mt. Lehman and Ross elementaries in the city’s west, and Barrowtown and Upper Sumas elementaries in the east. The district also proposed changing catchment areas so Barrowtown and Upper Sumas students would attend Abbotsford middle and senior. But some parents have come out against the move, which will be voted on by the board of education in February. Jared White, who has two children at Upper Sumas along with a preschooler, said the current system works well for families and allows older children to help younger kids in school. “What a blessing it is for a (kindergarten student) to have an older sibling in Grade 6 or 7 who can help them navigate their sense of belonging in the school and who can be there to stand up for them,” White wrote in a letter to the district. White said changing the catchments the same year further complicates things, as older children like his son have already made connections at their existing catchment-area middle school. “As educators and parents yourselves, you should be aware that consistency and structure is best for a child’s development,” White wrote. “Changing expectations and plans mid-year is going to upset a lot of children and a lot of families.” He suggested that if the change does happen, it should be delayed until 2017 or later. White also formed a Facebook group, Save Our K-7 Schools, that had 120 members as of Tuesday afternoon. One parent wrote on the group’s page: “This deeply saddens our family. One of the reasons we chose Ross elementary was the k-7! With our son being in grade 5, this is like having the carpet ripped out from underneath us … There should be fair warning, better set up of this process, not half a year notice.” The school district has pledged to consult further with parents. Consultation meetings are anticipated to be held in January.

Step forward for homeless Finally – positive action on the homeless situation in Abbotsford. In coming weeks, the occupants of the “protest camp” on Gladys Avenue and other street people will have another option available to them – warm, supervised shelter for the winter months in construction trailers on Riverside Road, along with support services to help them address long-term housing and health issues. There are some who say this took far too long, and they would be right. But along with former councils that dragged their feet for years on this critical issue, a finger can also be pointed at the feet of the activist Drug War Survivors group and its advocates. Their legal challenge to the city’s bylaw that banned camping in parks froze this chronic issue in the courts for about two years. The city had to defend against the litigation, and that cost hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars. The outcome achieved little, since the judge’s ruling was essentially a mirror of
an earlier Victoria case, in which the court ruled the homeless could camp overnight on public land, but had to pack up during the day. Shortly after the case was over, the city announced the temporary shelter, as it could have done earlier had it not been legally hamstrung. Even so, as the case plodded through the courts, the city resurrected an earlier unsuccessful plan for a 31-bed permanent, low-barrier, supportive-housing project to be built next year. Clearly, governments and their constituents, not the justice system, solve complex social issues such as homelessness. Next, we need to see the speedy end of the Gladys camp. And following that, further momentum on long-term measures for the homeless in this city. It’s unlikely the issue will ever be completely resolved. Some will refuse whatever is provided. So be it – as long as the support is there when and if they become ready to receive it.

Ron Sweeney was my Grade 11 math teacher at Abby Senior in 1980-81, when he must have been 55 years old, not far from where I am now. His hair was already white, as I remember, and had a curmudgeonly, gruff, world-weary persona I imagine is common to long-time, retirement-ready teachers. I had his class in the last room on the left, at the east end of the long hallway that stretched across the front of the school. It’s parking space now, since the old school was demolished. He never bothered himself, for example, with learning your name. You were assigned a dual-digit number based on which desk you sat in, arranged in a grid pattern. First and front rows were zeros, so that the unfortunate person to choose front row, left side, was designated “0,0”, which garnered a round of derisive laughter that first day. I was “0,5”, by the entrance. It was a stratagem to teach you your ephemerality and insignificance. The desks were more substantive than those who occupied them for an hour. And you could be presumed an idiot until you proved yourself otherwise. (I didn’t, earning a C+.) And Math 11 was much simpler then than it is now, mostly algebra as I remember. But for all this, Sweeney was endearing, in a grandfatherly way, and I don’t remember him having

any outsized behavioral problems or insurrections. He dominated the space with his person, not his will. He could be roused to ridicule, not wrath, that rebounded on the student who revealed to his peers his own foolishness. The implicit invitation
Sweeney’s teaching made was to an active intelligence and application to task that bespoke manhood (okay, adulthood), to a generation still enamored with its own adolescence. When he ran for city council he had a large constituency of former students to recognize his name on the
ballot. I remember him saying he never spent a penny on his political campaigns. In fact, he’d been paid for them, years before, as he earned his living, in classrooms like the one I knew, in a school that’s just a memory.

Neighbours give mixed reaction to homeless shelter

Riverside Road camp causes concern for some area residents Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
Abbotsford’s decision to open a 40-bed temporary winter shelter on Riverside Road near the Highway 1 overpass was praised by homeless activists, but some nearby residents aren’t happy with the decision. Stephanie, who lives a short walk away, says she’s afraid the shelter will attract drug users and cause safety concerns for her groundfloor townhouse. She said there’s been an attempted home invasion in her complex, and thefts from porches are common. “I’m a single woman who lives on the first floor. This event has given me anxiety and symptoms of PTSD,” she said. Notifications about the shelter, which was
announced on Nov. 26, were sent two days earlier to residents of the house across the street and to offices of the two adjacent railways. The owner of the residential property across the street said he’s “not terribly concerned” about the shelter, so long as it’s truly temporary and doesn’t stay beyond the two planned winters. He
didn’t want to disclose his surname, but said he wasn’t informed by the city prior to the shelter announcement, and hasn’t yet heard anything about it from his tenant. As the land is designated as industrial under the Official Community Plan, he doesn’t plan to keep the property as a residential rental for the long term.
Mayor Henry Braun said consultation with neighbours wasn’t required before starting the project, as temporary shelter is allowed in any zoning category. The $750,000 the city plans to contribute to the project’s budget isn’t coming from property taxes, but from Abbotsford’s share of the gas tax fund, Braun added.

The school also operates a preschool and child care facility in Abbotsford, where they will offer free spaces for refugees. Volunteers and representatives from gurdwaras, schools, and community groups from Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley came together at a Nov. 20 forum organized by Surrey Centre MP Randeep Sarai, hoping to contribute whatever they could to the thousands of refugees fleeing unrest in Syria who are expected to settle in British Columbia. They formed a partnership called the Sikh Societies of British Columbia, and now plan to meet regularly for more co-ordinated charity projects. “We are very excited to help … they need all the support,” said Balwant Sanghera, one of the forum’s organizers. Representatives from the Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadar, on South Fraser Way, and the Gurdwara Sahib Kalgidhar Darbar, on Blueridge Drive, have pledged to participate by donating food, clothing and bedding. Organizers say they’re in touch with representatives from the Abbotsford Khalsa Diwan Society, who hope to contribute as well. program at Khalsa School, in Miracle Valley north of Mission, the usual $150-per-month tuition will be funded through community donations. The school offers classes in the Punjabi language and Sikh history, as well as time for Sikh religious observance, but they currently offer alternative programming for students of other faiths – an option that will be offered to refugees, most of whom are expected to be Muslim or Christian. Schooling takes place in English, but some of the teachers speak Arabic — which could help newcomers still working to develop their English skills. Located on the grounds of a former treatment centre, the Mission school opened for their first year this fall, and currently has 25 students with space for up to 130.

New electronic monitoring for offenders GPS ankle bracelets allow mapping of movements Advanced new ankle bracelets to electronically monitor high-risk offenders after their release from prison will soon be in use in B.C. The move comes more than a year after the arrest of paroled rapist Raymond Caissie in the murder of Surrey high school student Serena Vermeersch. At the time, Justice Minister Suzanne Anton acknowledged the monitoring of high-risk offenders needed to be improved. The Crown did not request electronic monitoring of Caissie. In July, the province selected UK-based provider Buddi Ltd. to provide new monitoring devices to track released offenders and ensure they don’t violate release conditions. B.C. Corrections expects to begin using the new devices in mid-December. The hybrid radio frequency/GPS system has better tracking and reporting capabilities, including an ability to
program in no-go zones and map an offender’s travels. An alarm sounds at the central monitoring site if the offender enters a restricted area, and vibration alerts on the ankle bracelet remind the offender to comply. The real-time location data may also help police rule out
monitored offenders as suspects in a new crime. The old ankle bracelet system, which relies on a telephone landline,
could only verify that an offender was home and was mainly used to monitor house arrest and enforce curfews. Future innovations are likely to include smartphone apps that alert victims when an offender is in the vicinity, as well as built-in drug and alcohol screening.

Fraser hospital jams easing: report card Jeff NAGEL BLACK PRESS
Hospitals in the Fraser Health region have improved slightly from the spring on key indicators of congestion, but large numbers of incoming patients continue to wait too long to get a bed. Fraser’s latest report card suggests that re-
mains a persistent problem despite repeated initiatives to improve patient flow. And some improvements seen elsewhere in the region haven’t been seen at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC). As of September, it shows just under 40 per cent of admit-
ted patients got a bed within a 10-hour benchmark so far this year. That’s far below a target of 55 per cent, which is itself lower than more ambitious targets that had been set in previous years and subsequently discarded. A 2012 congestion review warned hallway medicine was so

same target with more than 54 per cent of its patients getting a bed within 10 hours. From April to August, Fraser averaged 204 patients across its hospitals
who’ve been admitted but not yet given a proper bed and are instead being treated in ERs, hallways, lounges or other nonacute care areas. That’s
down from 222 in the spring, but still in excess of a target of 165 or less. However, Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said the

latest data available shows a further drop in October to 199 and all of those patients are now in ER beds, not hallways. Juma credited the improving trend to Fraser’s decision to use $5 million to hire more staff to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, support weekend discharges and speed transfers from emergency to inpatient units. “That investment that we had made earlier in the year is starting to pay off,” she said. “We are starting to see that number now come down and are effectively no longer using hallway beds to provide the care to the patients.” Another bright spot in the report card is that the average length of stay in hospital is down to 8.2 days, within 10 per cent of the target of 7.8 days, also indicating improving patient flow through wards to residential care or home care. But too many “long-stay patients” are still occupying hospital beds for more than 30 days. And too many extra days that don’t need to be spent in hospital happen while patients that could be discharged wait for transfer to a care home or to home care or other specialized care with supports. Fraser says it plans to open 34 new residential care beds soon to help improve that flow. Juma predicted the ongoing work to add residential beds and improve community capacity “is also going to have impact as we start to move people out of the hospital into the places they need to be in the community and then out of those emergency beds into those inpatient beds.” Overall, the eight out of 30 indicators on the report card are meeting target, 16 are within 10 per cent of targets, and six are well off-target and a priority for improvement. Fraser is beating the provincial target for speedy repair of hip fractures. And the rate of C. difficile antibiotic resistant infections is now below the provincial target. – with files from Tyler Olsen

An Abbotsford magician received a pleasant surprise in Chilliwack last month. Magician Gord Boyes unexpectedly received a presidential citation from Joe Turner, the international president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, at a convention Boyes was running. The award makes reference that “his commitment to the enhancement of the art of magic is demonstrated in his exceptional and award-winning work as an editor, convention producer, and professional entertainer.” In the past, Boyes has been presented with numerous awards, including Comedy Magician of the Year, Kidabra Entertainer of the Year, and Children’s Magician of the Year, but he says this one is special. “My main concern is always about entertaining people and helping them create awesome memories, but having my efforts and accomplishments recognized by my peers and by someone of the stature of Joe Turner is a great honour and this award is something I’ll treasure,” Boyes said. From Nov. 19 to Nov. 22, approximately 130 magicians from across North America gathered at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel for the 82nd annual convention of the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians (PCAM). This convention is held in a different city along the Pacific Coast each year, and this year Boyes – the PCAM pres-

Mayor Henry Braun and his wife Velma were treated to a sneak peek of Trethewey House decked out in its holiday best on Nov. 25. Christina Reid, MSA Museum’s collections manager, took the Brauns on a tour of the house and interpreted the collections pieces and their relevance to the history of the region. Trethewey House was built in 1919 and finished in 1920 with the finest fir lumber produced at the Abbotsford Lumber Company mill on Mill Lake. The bricks used in the chimneys and fireplaces were made with clay mined on nearby Sumas Mountain and processed at Clayburn Village, B.C.’s first company town. Trethewey House was designated as a heritage site in 1983, and is now operated by the MSA Museum Society, which will soon merge with The Reach Gallery Museum. The staff of the two organizations have created a 1920s Christmas house while returning many of the artifacts to their place in the historic house. “This time of the year is always special at Trethewey House, but this year, decking the halls has had a deeper significance than ever,” Reid said. Trethewey Christmas House is now open for public tours until Dec. 18. It is located at 2313 Ware St. A free carolling and movie night is on Dec. 8, and an old-fashioned breakfast with Santa is on Dec. 12 for $8. Tickets are available at eventbrite.ca or by calling the museum office at 604-853-0313.

The first-ever Fraser Valley Music Awards (FVMA) will be held in Abbotsford next July, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) successfully landed by Abbotsford’s 101.7 CIVL Radio. FVMA co-ordinator James Kasper, who founded the Vancouver Island Music Awards in 2002, said the event’s mandate will be to celebrate local arts and culture and provide resources and support for local musicians. “There is an abundance of great
music in the Fraser Valley, and we want to bring attention to it and bring all facets of the scene together on one night to network and celebrate.” Musicians in the Fraser Valley will be asked to provide their music to the FVMA jury when the submission period begins Feb.1. Meanwhile, CIVL Radio is recruiting volunteers and seeking out sponsors to attach their names to the new initiative. “We think the talent exists in the Valley at a level whereby the next Arcade Fire or Feist can be from east of the bridge,” said Aaron Levy, CIVL station manag-
er. “Our goal is to provide a jumping-off point from which they can achieve that level of success.” Over the past few years, CIVL Radio has organized similar events, including a Battle of the Bands whose winners have gone on to the Peak Performance Project (Derrival) and the Fox Seeds competition (John Welsh). A 2016 Battle of the Bands will be one of the major events leading up to the 2016 FVMA. Those interested in getting involved in the FVMA as sponsors or volunteers are asked to email fvma@civl.ca or call 604-8516330.

Three receive Rotary Club honours The Rotary Clubs of Abbotsford, Abbotsford-Sumas and Abbotsford-Matsqui have each presented the annual Don Funk Memorial Award to a deserving individual. The award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional “Service Above Self” in their actions, both within and outside the Rotary community. This year’s recipients, each presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship, are Alan Hougen (Abbotsford), Allan Asaph (Abbotsford-Sumas), and Neal Doan (Abbotsford-Matsqui). Hougen has been involved in Rotary for many years and is a previous recipient of the fellowship several times. In addition to being past president, he has been a group study exchange host, air show volunteer, participant in a Rotaplast mission to the Philippines and worked on multiple committees. Abbotsford-Sumas Rotary president Mike Adkins said Asaph “was always the quiet and unassuming person. Whenever asked, he followed through and got the job done. He is a totally committed Rotarian and has been for many years.” Doan is a two-time club president, the club’s unofficial historian, the director of public relations, a mentor to new members, and has been involved for 23 years as a key organizer of the annual Wine Festival.

Abby Panthers win provincial semi-final Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Panthers are one win away from a provincial football title, after defeating the Langley Saints 50-29 at BC Place on Saturday. The semi-final started out well for the Panthers, as they pushed the Saints deep into their own zone and committed a safety after a flubbed point. A Panthers fumble stalled the team’s first offensive drive, and Langley marched down the field to go up 8-2 early, but the
Panthers scored four unanswered touchdowns to lead 29-8 at the half. Star wide receiver Chase Claypool was a huge factor in the Panthers win. He scored a touchdown in each quarter, and he seemed to be on the same wavelength as quarterback John Madigan for the entire game. “I tell him just to throw it up as high and as far as he can and I’ll try to make a play on it,” he said. The star wide receiver did just that on several plays, and also

was a key defensive piece in the Panthers’ win. He made several tackles and grabbed an interception in the second quarter. His play wasn’t unnoticed by the opposition. “He is a special, special athlete,” said Langley co-head coach Ryk Piche of the sixfoot-five receiver. “With his body type, he looks like a thirdyear university player. “We had two guys covering him, we had one high, one low, we had one playing man and one playing zone [defence] over top of him and there were times they would just throw a ball up in his general direction and the young man would come down with the ball.” Running back Richard Tshimpaka also had a huge game, scoring two touchdowns and playing a key role on defence. Reese Morrison caught the Panthers’ other touchdown. Panthers head coach Jay Fujimura said it

was a solid team effort. “We knew today was going to be a test,” he said. “Langley is a very good team, and we spent a lot of time preparing for all their schemes. For the most part we did pretty good at closing the gaps on them.” Claypool said last week’s win against the defending champion Barsby Bulldogs was a huge lift for the team. “We’re getting more confident,” he said. “We were always there; we just needed that confidence boost. That win against Barsby was really big for us – they were one of the best teams we’ve played. It’s all about the guys trusting each other to make big plays.” Claypool said it’s going to be a week of preparing for the Carson Graham Eagles on Saturday. “We’ve never seen them before so we’re going to do a lot of film on them this week,” he said. “We have to know how they play and be prepared for them.

Back in Grade 9 we lost it [playoff game] and there are some seniors from that team still here, I don’t want to have that feeling again. We really want to do it for our coach he wants it bad.” Fujimura said the title game will be a test for his team. “I know they have one of the better running backs in the province and a big line so they can move the ball,” he said. “Carson is a very balanced team, but we have to be ready and play tough.” He said his team is coming together at the perfect point in the year. “We’re peaking at the right time,” he said. “We’re getting better every week and we seem to be making less and less mistakes.” Carson Graham beat G.W. Abby quartet win Vanier Cup Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
A quartet of Abbotsford football products are now national champions. Defensive back Tanner Friesen, wide receiver Ben Cummings, defensive lineman Levi Hua and quarterback Greg Bowcott were all part of the UBC Thunderbirds historic 26-23 win over the Montreal Carabins in Quebec City on Saturday. UBC won the Vanier Cup, the biggest prize in CIS football, with a last-second field goal kick. The last time UBC won the Vanier Cup was 1997. Fr i e s e n and Cummings are both first-years, and graduated from Robert Bateman Secondary. Hua is a second-year and graduated from W.J. Mouat Secondary, while Bowcott is a fifthyear player from Rick Hansen Secondary. Friesen recorded one assisted tackle in the game. “We make it tough on ourselves, but that’s what you expect from a young team. This group of guys was not even picked to make the playoffs in Canada West this year,” said UBC head coach Blake Nill. “What they have done is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen. This team has stood up to the best the country can offer and they have come out in front every time.” The win completes a Cinderella story, after the club finished last in the Canada West conference with two wins and six losses in 2014. It’s also less than two years removed from a UBC sports targeting review, where the future of the football program was in doubt.

Pilots take down Outlaws
A37
Prosperity is bringing people together to share in the warmth of the season.

Abbotsford News
The Mission City Outlaws have lost only five games this season, but two of those losses have come at the sticks of the Abbotsford Pilots. The Pilots put another loss in the column for the Outlaws on Friday, beating the top team in the Pacific Junior Hockey League 5-4 at the MSA Arena. A second-period offensive explosion that saw the Pilots score four unanswered goals was the catalyst in a 5-4 Pilots win. Mission opened the scoring and Abbotsford’s Sean Olson tied the game up in the first, but the Outlaws regained the lead with a late first-period power play goal to hold a 2-1 lead after one period. The Pilots turned on the afterburners in the second, when Olson scored 59 seconds in to once again tie the game. Justin Wilde scored about two minutes later to give the Pilots the lead for the first time, and Alexander Methorst also scored a minute later. Cole Methorst then potted the eventual game-winning goal after a nice set-up that chased the Outlaws’ starting goalie Gunnar Nielsen out of the crease, and the Pilots skated out of the second period with a three-goal lead. The Outlaws battled back in the third, scoring two goals and ringing a shot off the crossbar in the final minute, but the Pilots hung on for the

Abbotsford’s penalty kill a big factor in win over Mission From A37
5-4 win. “We started OK, then struggled for a bit and then we were really good in the second,” said Pilots head coach Jim Cowden. “We really started to skate in the second period. I don’t think they got a shot in the first 10 minutes of the second. And our goals
were all really good.” Cowden said the penalty kill was again a big difference, as the Pilots had to kill off a two-man advantage for several minutes in the second period. “The guys know what to do out there,” Cowden said. “We have the best PK in the league. Everyone gets in position and
they take away the shot at the point.” Hayden Guilderon had a four-point night, with the Methorst brothers, Sean Olson, and Justin Wilde all having multiple-point nights. The win comes off a 3-2 loss to the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Wednesday. The Pilots had a 2-1 lead head-
ing into the third, but Aldergrove scored a pair in the final frame to earn the win. Kellan Lavallee and Cole Methorst scored the goals for the Pilots. “We didn’t forecheck and I thought we played awful,” Cowden. “I thought our defence played OK but our forwards didn’t play very good
at all.” Abbotsford remains in second place in the Harold Brittain Conference after the weekend, with a record of 15 wins, nine losses and one overtime loss. The Pilots next host the Kodiaks at MSA Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and then travel to Mission on Saturday.

Lorna Evelina Nanette It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lorna Evelina Nanette VanderEnde on November 16, 2015 with her family by her side. She was born in Vancouver, BC on September 30, 1957. She is survived by her mother Marie Dinicola, her siblings, her long time partner and husband Wes Fullerton, her daughter Jennifer Palmer, her son-in-law John Palmer, her grandchildren Madelyn Palmer and Leah Palmer, her son Rob VanderEnde and her loving Bradley family.
She was extremely passionate about horses and loved her garden and flowers. She devoted time to her grandchildren. Loved any animal especially her budgie Bard and was always on the hunt for the best “treasure” whether it be a fancy rock on her walks or something special for her granddaughters. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Greener Pastures horse rescue. http://www.greener-pastures.ca/ There will be no service by request.
MARTIN Lawrence William George December 30, 1917 ~ November 26, 2015 John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Well Dad, this time the “ice cream has fallen off my cone”. Dad loved ice cream and he would often take me for a cone. The caption is from a Dennis the Menace cartoon from over 50 years ago and it had a special meaning to Dad and I. He was a wonderful father. Dad passed away peacefully at the age of 97, his heart just ran out of beats. Although legally blind and confined to a wheelchair, he was mentally sound to the end, never lost his sense of humour, and never complained. He was predeceased by all his family and friends of his generation losing his wife Gertie, in May 2011. They had been next door neighbours and were married for 68 years. He is survived by son, Gerry, two grandchildren, Michelle Sohl (Jonn), Murray, and four great-grandchildren, Kourtnie, Kendra, Mollie and William. Dad wielded a mean pool cue, was an avid fisherman into his late 80’s and was ALWAYS on time. Rejected for military service, he was a shipyard welder during the war years and then after a short stint at Dairyland was employed as a “burner” at the Dominion Bridge Co. until he retired. The family wants to thank the staff of Tabor Court and also Tabor Home where he was affectionately called “Hot Lips” because he liked his coffee very hot. You provided him with exceptional care, as he so often told us. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 5, at 2:00 pm at the Ramada Abbotsford.

LEADS THE WAY
DOWNTOWN ABBOTSFORD
IN COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Magnuson Ford gives back to Abbotsford “We want to give back to the community and the best way to do that is through you.” - Capt. Thurston McClain
We are more than an auto dealer and continue to prove it with our numerous community sponsorships and Drive One events! We have been in business for just over 6 years and are being recognized and nominated for a Small Business BC Award under the category of Best Community Impact. We are proud of the fact that we have hosted more community Drive One events than any other Canadian Ford dealer! So far this year we have participated in 94 events and have helped raise approximately $300,000 for local charities and causes. Thank you Abbotsford for your continued support . . . we look forward to being part of a great community for years to come!
