Police find replica gun linked to school lockdown BB gun found hidden inside Robert Bateman secondary Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Police have recovered a replica handgun linked to an incident last week that led to a threehour lockdown at Robert Bateman secondary in Abbotsford. Const. Ian MacDonald said major crime detectives located the hidden weapon on Saturday in a public area of the school. He wouldn’t say exactly where it was found, but said it was not
in a classroom. He said the high-velocity BB gun is believed to have been brought into the school by a group of teen boys whose behaviour had prompted a 911 call on Thursday at about 12:15 p.m. The call was made by the resident of a home in the 34000 block of Immel Street who said a group of four youths had tried to engage him in an altercation at the residence and that one of them Continued on A5

Business, search and rescue centre concerned about shelter
QUALITY
Abbotsford News
Next to the temporary homeless shelter being built on Riverside Road is the Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue centre, and a two-storey home beside a small welding shop. Rescue organization members are concerned that the shelter may negatively affect their operations, and the man next door is worried it will hurt his business. The 40-bed temporary shelter, which will be assembled out of construction-type trailers, is set to open on Dec. 21. The $1.2-million project low-barrier, operated by Lookout Emergency Aid Society and jointly funded by the city and the province, will include a drop-in centre and free meals during the day. It will shut down at the end of April, and then reopen for the 2016-17 winter. Ruben Weiss rents the house across the street from the shelter site and, along with his father, operates the welding shop beside his home. He says he’s had
City crews work to prepare the lot on Riverside Road for the temporary homeless LAURA RODGERS Abbotsford News shelter. issues with theft from his yard in the past, and is afraid the shelter will attract people who might steal his equipment. The city brought a letter to his door two days before the shelter was announced, but Weiss said that wasn’t enough time. He and his dad have operated a commercial greenhouse business for six years. They do most of their work on-site at farms,
but they store plenty of expensive and hard-toreplace equipment at the shop. “Someone should have come and talked to me, but they didn’t do that,” he said. “I sympathize with homeless people…but how long do I have to secure my property?…Anything that’s not nailed down will be taken.” Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue operates at the centre just
next door to the shelter site, and president Lee Holeczek is concerned the shelter may cause security concerns when members come in for rescue calls at odd hours. “We have some concerns regarding security and safety of our members and volunteers,” Holeczek said. He’d like to see the city fund improvements to security features like lighting, fences and
locks at the search and rescue centre, and consider cameras or motion sensors. City staff said they’ll consider his requests, and the shelter is already set to have sturdy fencing, ample lighting and 24-hour supervision. Mayor Henry Braun said he understands concerns, but stressed public approval isn’t required for temporary shelters because they’re currently allowed in all types of land zoning. “I think people don’t understand this. There’s a lot of land uses that can take place under bylaws that we don’t have to [bring] to another public hearing,” said Braun. Council heard public comment about the shelter lot on Dec. 7, but the only issues up for debate were how close the building could be to a stream and what kind of parking surface will be used. Allan Asaph from the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and one member of the public spoke in favour of the shelter.

Masked men target Bradner store Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A crook toting a baseball bat was left behind by his three accomplices on Sunday night after they drove away from an attempted robbery at the Bradner General Store. Abbotsford Police received a call at 5:45 p.m. that four masked men, one of them with a bat, had come into the store in the 5400 block of Bradner Road. A female worker ran screaming from the store, which alerted her husband, who came to assist her. Three of the men quickly fled in an older four-door grey sedan, abandoning the fourth culprit. That man then attempted to hit the male victim with the bat before he, too, ran away.
The woman flagged down a passing motorist in a white pickup truck, and they came across the suspect as he walked north on Bradner Road.
One of the suspects in an attempted robbery at the Bradner General Store on Sunday night was carrying a baseball bat.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was trying to blend in as a pedestrian but was carrying a mask and a baseball bat. The driver and the victim confronted the man, although MacDonald wasn’t clear about what they did or said. They then returned to the store, and it’s not known where the suspect went. That man is described as Caucasian, in his 20s, about 5’4” and with a thin build. He was wearing dark clothing. Police are hoping to speak with the driver of the white pickup truck who assisted the female victim and to anyone else who might have information. They can call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-8595225, text abbypd (222972) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-880-222-8477.

B.C. First Nations leaders gather to push for heritage site Financial compensation hoped for ancestral burial site Name Newspaper
When a First Nations heritage site sits on land slated for development, it usually results in tensions. But a dispute over a Sumas First Nation ancestral cemetery in Abbotsford has put a business developer and aboriginal groups from across the province firmly on the same side. After a year with no response from the province, First Nations leaders from across B.C. met at an east Abbotsford lot, owned by Corpus Management Group, to push for Heritage Conservation Act recognition of the burial site underfoot. They were joined by John Glazema, Corpus’ director, who joined the dignitaries donned in a draped blanket – a mark of respect. The cultural significance of the Sumas Mountain location – understood to be an ancestral cemetery associated with a devastating 1782 smallpox epidemic – was one factor cited last November when the City of Abbotsford rejected the $40-million “agri-mall” business proposed there by Corpus. But without provincial recognition of the site under the

Top B.C. First Nations leaders gathered at the Sumas Mountain lot on Friday along with the property owner, to make a concerted push for provincial heritage site LAURA RODGERS Abbotsford News recognition. Heritage Conservation Act, there’s no recourse for the company to receive compensation for the land that’s now known to be undevelopable. On Friday, Sumas First Nation Chief Dalton Silver gathered with some of B.C.’s top aboriginal leaders at the site, all urging provincial action. In attendance were Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, Regional Chief Shane Gottfriedson of the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations, Robert Phillips of the First Nations Leadership Council,
Ray Harris of the First Nations Summit and Chief David Jimmie of Sto:lo Nation. Sumas First Nation and Corpus petitioned the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to designate a portion of the land as a Provincial Heritage Site under the Heritage Conservation Act in December of 2014. Since then, they haven’t heard anything. “We’re hoping that we can get together with the government and move things forward to the satisfaction of everybody,” said Silver. “We feel completely abandoned,” said
Glazema. They hope bringing in provincial-level aboriginal voices, and asking the B.C. ombudsperson to intervene, will get results. Silver said he’s had to inform two previous landowners about the land’s importance. Oral histories from local First Nations elders describe the site, once on the shore of the nowdrained Sumas Lake, as the burial place of a Semá:th tribal village that was nearly wiped out by a wave of smallpox that arrived ahead of European contact. He’s concerned there are no regulations cur-
rently in place to ensure land buyers know about sites of this nature. Glazema agrees. He said that if he’d known its history, Corpus would never have bought the land or proposed a business development there. “We want to respect their cultural significance, it’s no different from how we’d want our cultural significance respected,” he said. Dave Schaepe, an archaeologist working for the Sto:lo Research and Resource Management Centre, believes the province is reluctant to grant the site recognition. Although it is understood to be a culturally significant burial site, the presence of physical remains has not been confirmed and may not be confirmable given how old the cemetery is. In archaeology, this is known as an “intangible” site, and Schaepe suspects the province may be worried that granting such a site recognition could set a precedent for many other similar sites on Crown land. Silver and Glazema aren’t just hoping for a recognition in this one case – they’d like to see the province set up a fund for others encountering similar situations.

appeared to have a gun. The caller told police that the suspects had left in the direction of the nearby Robert Bateman high school. A plainclothes officer in the area had also seen the group and believed that one of the youths was in possession of a handgun. Before the four teens could be intercepted, they arrived at the high school and were reported to be running into the school. That school, the adjacent Clayburn middle school and nearby Sandy Hill el-
ementary were placed on full lockdown, while other schools in the area – including Sandy Hill, Margaret Stenersen and Abbotsford Christian – were put on “hold in place” status, meaning the exterior doors were locked but regular operations continued inside. Numerous police vehicles and about 30 officers, including members of the emergency response team, converged on the area and began searching the inside and exterior of the high school. MacDonald said police used an “abundance of caution” because they did not know whether the gun in question was

real or fake. The four 17-year-old suspects were found inside the school and were all taken into custody by 2:11 p.m. The school remained on lockdown until 3:20 p.m. while police searched for a possible weapon and additional evidence. Evidence to support that the weapon may have been a BB gun was located near one of the suspects, but the actual weapon was not found until Saturday. MacDonald said the investigation is continuing, and charges still under consideration include uttering threats and possessing a weapon.

Guilty plea for man linked to Townline conflict Drug charges stemmed from three arrests Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A man who police have said is involved in the Townline Hill gang conflict in Abbotsford has pleaded guilty to drug charges connected to his three arrests this year. Vishal Bajaj, 26, has pleaded guilty to three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. In total, he faced nine such charges – three from each of his arrests. He pleaded guilty to one charge from each arrest, while the six other counts, as well as a charge of breaching his bail conditions, are expected to be stayed at sentencing. In all three arrests, police al-
legedly found cocaine, heroin and meth. Bajaj has remained in custody since his third arrest and appeared in court briefly, via video conferencing, on Thursday morning, when the date for his sentencing hearing was scheduled for Jan. 8. Bajaj was first charged in May of this year, when he and another man, Iqbal Kular, were stopped in a vehicle in the area of Upper Maclure Road and Mallard Street. The two men were each charged with three counts. Kular’s next court appearance is slated for Dec. 14. It is not yet known if he is planning to plead guilty. Bajaj was again arrested on
Sept. 8 and charged with the same three counts after police executed a search warrant at a Sandpiper Drive home. His third arrest occurred just eight days later, when he and another man, Kuldeep Gill, were arrested in Aldergrove. Bajaj and Gill were each charged with the three same offences as in the other incidents. Gill’s next court appearance is on Jan. 8, but he has not pleaded guilty at this point. Police previously said that Bajaj had been identified as an individual involved in the Townline Hill conflict, which involves two gangs of young men fighting over drug turf in west Abbotsford.
School district sets consultation meeting dates and on Jan. 26 at Aberdeen elementary for Aberdeen and Ross parents and guardians. The district will also send parents a briefing document outlining details related to the realignment, which would change the schools to a kindergarten-to-Grade 5 configuration, matching the rest of the elementary schools in the city. The information will also be posted online at sd34.bc.ca/board/consultations.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Wednesday, December 9, 2015
No replica for life Last Thursday’s police incident involving a group of four teens at Robert Bateman secondary contains equally large levels of foolishness and good fortune. The four showed up at the house of another young man in the area of the school, apparently intent on a fight. The target called police, suggesting one of them may be carrying a gun, and that they were headed toward Bateman. A plainclothes officer happened to be in the vicinity and saw what looked to be a handgun on one of the suspects, who made it into the school before they could be intercepted. Police responded accordingly, locking down Bateman and several other schools in the vicinity while they investigated. The four men involved were arrested that afternoon, but it was not until Saturday that detectives found the gun hidden in the school.
It turned out to be a replica BB gun – easily indistinguishable even at very close distance from a real, bullet-firing, lethal handgun. Had one of those teens been seen by police while pointing that replica at someone – or at an officer – that teen may well be dead today. Public condemnation of the police would have been merciless. But, a huge measure of luck was in the teens’ favour, following their monumentally stupid decisions that day. It serves as a huge lesson to anyone else who thinks that toting a replica handgun in public is not begging for a situation that could go terribly wrong, terribly fast. This incident – among many involving very realistic-looking pellet and BB guns – raises the question whether these weapons should be banned entirely, or at least licensed. There’s no replica for life.
The delicate dance of getting ready Andrew
Holota
On Point It’s the festive time of year when folks are frequently out and about – company events, social occasions, family gatherings, etc. I was sitting around the other day, (not so) patiently waiting for my wife to get ready to go somewhere, and in quiet desperation, I mulled the complex synchronization process for a couple to “get ready.” My learning curve in this respect could be judged as less than stellar. It took years. In fact, my wife might suggest I have not yet achieved full enlightenment. Many of you, I’m sure, can relate. Me: “Are you ready to go?” Her: “In a few minutes.” Me: “But a few minutes ago you said you were ready.”
Her: “I am, almost.” Me: “Almost is not ready.” Her: “Don’t pester me. I’m getting ready!” As we can see, the interpretation of “ready” can vary dramatically between the genders, and I suspect, has for generations. If you and your partner have managed to switch these roles, or better yet, fully reconcile them, well, congratulations! The first time I asked my eventual wifeto-be if she was ready, and she replied in the affirmative, I made the mistake of interpreting that to mean she was actually prepared to walk out to the car. It is now more than two decades, but I have come to marginally appreciate that when she says, “I’m ready,” it actually means one of two things: One: “I am now mentally prepared. I am satisfied that I have carefully considered what I need to do in order to get ready, and I am engaged in the process of doing them.” Think of “Ready, Set, Go.” Note that Set is between Ready and Go, and that Ready
is at the beginning of the sequence. It is a distance from Go. There is a transition through Set. Translation Two: “I am saying I am ready because that is what you want to hear. If I tell you I’m ready, you go away
Think of ‘Ready, Set, Go.’ Note that Set is between Ready and Go. for awhile and I can then continue to get ready. I am standing here not fully dressed because I have not yet fully confirmed what I am going to wear. Do I look ready?!” She then offers if I really want to be helpful, I will help select an outfit. Eager to do so, I point at something. “That.” And that draws an immediate suspicious look. “You did that too quickly. You’re just
saying that to rush me.” I now operate on the principle that we are ready when we are both in the vehicle and wheeling out of the driveway. As in Go. Now this next part I’ve known for years, but I still occasionally do it. I simply cannot resist the temptation. “I’ve been ready for ages!” That statement carries distinct circumstances. The observation is painfully obvious. The past hour has been spent pacing, calling out the time, and making repeated tours to check on m’lady’s progress – and issue encouraging rhetoric. Stating the painfully obvious can result in the “get ready” process becoming grievously delayed. As well, when I utter the above statement, I must be absolutely and positively certain that I am indeed ready. If I make this announcement, and then need to drive back home because I forgot something, she will be ready to throttle me. Ready – as in now.

Holy crepe! That's good! Breakfast ONLY $5.50 6 great crepe options to choose from, includes medium coffee!
Location for street meals needed It can’t be 10 years, can it? I found myself sitting at Abbotsford Community Library thinking about the past, present and (hopefully) future of the meal the Downtown Street Ministry has been serving on Tuesday evenings at Calvin Presbyterian Church. It wasn’t only because of location description – “behind the mall the Mad Butcher is in” – that Calvin Presbyterian made such a great location. The location itself – just off South Fraser Way on Bourquin – made it accessible to those who depend on free meals to eat. However, Calvin Presbyterian has built a new church out along the Mission Highway.
Distance, darkness and danger make walking or bicycling along the Mission Highway to the new location a barrier for all but a handful of those who currently attend this Tuesday dinner. So it is not surprising that the vote held several months ago was overwhelmingly in favour of finding another location somewhere more accessible to move to, rather than the new location. The Downtown Street Ministry did not have to ask the diners about a preference, except the meal has always been about being welcomed with a genuine smile, about being recognized and addressed by name, about a relaxed, friendly atmo-
sphere to gather and enjoy a good meal in. What those who serve the meal put out is why people remain after the meal to help put away the tables and chairs. It would have been easier for those serving the meal to not have asked, or having asked, ignored the outcome. Since the strong expression of preference, the Downtown Street Ministry has been struggling to find a new location – plus or minus a few kilometres – that they can use to serve dinner Tuesday evening that does not present a barrier such as the Mission Highway. No luck and time is not on their side. James W Breckenridge

Animal cruelty charges will be recommended by the BC SPCA against the Reptile Guy rescue centre in Mission and owner Mike Hopcraft, according to senior animal protection officer Eileen Drever. But Hopcroft says he isn’t sure how to appease the SPCA. The animal welfare agency has executed four warrants against the reptile rehabilitation centre since July, and they seized 14 reptiles and 44 rats in an unexpected raid on Dec. 2. Crown counsel will determine whether to lay charges in the coming weeks. Hopcraft, who previously operated his refuge in Abbotsford, keeps over 300 reptiles and over 100 rats at his Mission storefront on First Avenue. Many are brought in as mistreated or unwanted pets. The Reptile Guy allows visitors to tour the centre for a fee, and they also provide birthday parties and educational presentations. “They came in about 10:30 in the morning (Dec. 2) with a warrant,” said Hopcraft. “They started taking animals, and I asked why ... they said because they were in critical distress.” The reptiles taken include four iguanas, two corn snakes, leopard geckos, beaded dragons, a water dragon and a boa constrictor. According to SPCA spokesperson Lori Chortyk, some of the confiscated animals were “emaciated” or in need of immediate veterinary care. They are all alive and currently being cared for by a veterinarian in Maple Ridge. Many of his reptiles appear to be in poor condition, Hopcraft said, because they were brought in that way, as mistreated or unwanted pets, and he and his staff are trying to nurse them back to health. “One of the animals they said was in ‘critical distress’ was a chameleon we’ve been rehabilitating for three months now.” He said the animal was brought in with a life-threatening vitamin A deficiency but has been steadily gaining vitality. Drever says the animals were seized because recommendations for their care weren’t followed after the organization’s previous visits. “We executed [a warrant] in the past, observed animals to be in distress, and issued notice to the caregiver to relieve the distress in the animals. [Then] we attended the property and found animals still in distress, and as a result they were removed,” said Drever. Hopcraft says he was asked to ensure all the animals have food, water, clean habitats and adequate lighting, all requests he said he has followed. “It’s just really frustrating to me, because it’s a rescue,” he said. “They expect every animal to be in 100 per cent great condition, or else it’s our fault and we’re neglecting them.” Hopcraft has 14 days to appeal and request the animals back, which he plans to do. As he’s been doing reptile rescue work for 15 years, he doesn’t intend to stop now. “I’m trying to regroup and de-stress ... I’m still a little numb from the whole thing,” he said.

Charges stayed against BTO co-founder Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
The co-founder of the iconic Canadian rock band BTO (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) has had his most recent set of sexual offence charges stayed. Timothy Gregg Bachman, 63, had been charged in May 2014 with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching – just one year after he had been acquitted of similar charges in a separate case. The most recent charges related to alleged offences taking place in the 1990s. Neil MacKenzie, communications counsel with the Criminal Justice Branch, said he could not provide the specifics on the
why the charges were stayed, but said the decision was reached while a prosecutor was preparing for the preliminary inquiry. “On the evidence that was available, the branch would not have been in a position to prove the charges alleged, and as a result directed a stay of proceedings on Nov. 19,” MacKenzie said. Bachman previously went on trial after being charged in June 2010 with sexual assault, touching a young person for a sexual purpose and sexual interference of a person under 14. He was found not guilty of those charges in May 2013. The charges related to a period from 2000 to 2004, when the complainant was 11 to 14 years old and was living with the
Bachman family in Abbotsford. In that case, the judge found that there were too many inconsistencies in the testimony of the complainant. Although the judge described the complainant as “mature, poised and well-spoken” during her testimony, he said the evidence wasn’t sufficient enough to convict Bachman. At the time charges were laid in that case, Bachman had been working as a realtor in Abbotsford. Bachman founded BTO, along with his brothers Randy and Robbie, as well as Fred Turner. He left the group in 1974, but rejoined BTO for a 1984 reunion and led touring versions of the band in 1987 and ’88.

It Feels Good to Give . . .
Refugee response teams Five refugee response teams will be set up by the B.C. government to help support incoming Syrian refugees in the main regions of the province where they’re expected to settle. The teams are planned for Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and the Cariboo, and will include refugee settlement organizations, private sponsors, churches, educators, health care providers and employers. They’ll help plan for how refugees will settle into specific communities as they begin to arrive. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond said the five response teams are being funded with $500,000 from a previously announced $1 million provincial refugee readiness fund. The other $500,000 will go to the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. to help fund its efforts to support refugees and marshall the efforts of various volunteers and agencies. “British Columbians have expressed in unbelievable ways across
this province their generosity and their willingness to be part of the solution,” Bond said. The province is also allocating $1.5 million in federal-provincial job grants to support skills training for refugees and to help match them to employers ready to hire new Canadians. Another $2.6 million is promised by the province for language training, and the Provincial Health Services Authority is hiring and training 30 additional interpreters. Bond said language training is one of the most urgent needs, adding she does not want refugees to face long wait lists to get into classes to learn English. Specialized project-specific language skill training is also to ensure, for example, that a Syrian construction worker gets the right English vocabulary to continue the work they previously did. So far B.C. is expecting mainly privately sponsored refugees – about 200 dispersed across 13 cities by the end of the year.

RAY’S SECURITY PATROL SERVICE

Fraser Valley children will have the gift of reading thanks to inmates in the minimum-security unit at Mission Institution. The inmates have helped sort, count and pack nearly 25,000 children’s books. The gently used books were donated to Discover Books via the blue metal bins placed in parking lots in several communities, including Abbotsford. The donations are sorted by the company’s employees into adult and children genres, but need to be further examined for age group and condition. For the past five years, Discover Books has donated the books to early-childhood programs and elementary classrooms so that children have access to them to help learn to read. Two years ago, Discover Books’ business model changed, and they could not do the detailed sorting and boxing of the books. Rather than lose the opportunity to get these books into classrooms and the hands of children, United Way partnered with Correctional Service Canada to get help. “Without the support of Correctional Service Canada and the inmates who participated in the sorting and boxing up of the books, we would not have been able to make this happen,” said Denise Finch, market manager for Discover Books. “This is a very time-consuming process. We can’t thank them enough for their support and look forward to the next round of sorting in the new year.”

Children’s theatre presents Nutcracker Abbotsford Children’s Theatre presents its production of The Nutcracker on Friday and Saturday. The Nutcracker opens on Christmas Eve when Clara and her brother Frank excitedly
await the arrival of Godfather Dross. He always brings the most wonderful (and sometimes even magical) toys. This year they receive the gift of a wooden Nutcracker. That night, when everyone is asleep,
the Nutcracker comes to life and saves Clara from the dreaded Mouse King. Many more adventures ensue, including a battle between the Toy Soldiers and Mouse Army; a visit to the Snow Kingdom,
home of the Snow Queen; and a trip to the Home of the Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy lives. The show takes place at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way.
Tickets are available online at abbotsfordchildrenstheatre. org or in person at Tourism Abbotsford, The Reach Gallery Museum and Jazz-Ma-Tazz. There may also be tickets available at the door.

Lee Coughlin says it was the best $89 he ever spent. Once or twice a week this month, Coughlin dons the red and white suit, hat and fake beard, and streaks around the city on his small electric scooter. Past schools he rides, drawing crowds of onlooking children to playground fences. And on busy thoroughfares, drivers honk not in frustration or anger, but to recognize the guy in red normally seen behind a sleigh and a dozen reindeer. In fact, all the happy honking takes some getting used to, he said.

Master Goldsmith on site. We service what we sell & more. Lee Coughlin rides his scooter around Abbotsford during the month of December “for the fun” of it. TYLER OLSEN Abbotsford News It’s the second year that Coughlin has donned the red-andwhite suit. Yes, he’s not the real Santa – who, after all, is busy making his list at this time of year. But, as one child mentioned to him, he might just be a clone – this is the 21st Century, after all. And joy, he said, is the point of wearing red. “I do it for the fun of it and to make the kids laugh.”

How hosts can keep guests safe According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, every 51 minutes someone is killed in a drunk driving crash and every 90 seconds someone is injured. Drunk driving injuries and fatalities are entirely preventable. When social occasions include alcoholic beverages, party hosts are responsible for the well-being of their guests. Hosts must monitor guests’ alcohol consumption and make any transportation or lodging arrangements for guests who overindulge. Party hosts should have the phone number of various cab companies at the ready or act as designated drivers to ensure guests get home safely.

Christmas Presence like a ‘family sing-along’ Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre partners with Gallery 7 Theatre in Abbotsford to present Christmas Presence on Saturday, Dec. 19. The show is a collection of songs and stories for the holiday season with a gathering of musicians and actors who meet the day of the event to trade songs and choose readings. Director Ron Reed said the production sets aside the lavish sets and costumes that dominate the season for what he calls “the un-slickest Christmas show in town.” He said the vibe at Christmas Presence is that of a family gathering that has burst into song – if you happen to have a family of diverse and talented musicians who harbour an equal love for David Sedaris, Stuart McLean and Madeleine L’Engle. This year’s show is headlined by singer-songwriter Brian Doerksen. Also featured is former Abbotsford resident and jazz musician Nelson Boschman, renowned player of all things stringed; Spencer Capier; and singer-songwriters Jon Ochsendorf and Corey Janz. Readings will be performed by Gallery 7 Theatre’s own Ken Hildebrandt alongside Reed. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Matsqui
Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way. Tickets are $29.99 (plus taxes and fees) and can be ordered by calling 604-731-5518 or online
at pacifictheatre.org. Tickets can also be purchased in person at House of James, 2743 Emerson St., in Abbotsford.

When star player Chase Claypool went down, the championship dreams for the Abbotsford Senior Secondary Panthers eventually faded. Claypool landed awkwardly while going up for a catch in the endzone in the first quarter of the BC high school football AA title game against the Carson Graham Eagles, and didn’t return until the second half. When he did come back, the Notre Dame
recruit played courageously, but was limited. It was Claypool’s absence on offence that stung, but it was his removal on defence that may have cost the Panthers the game. Abbotsford ended up losing 53-34 to the Carson Graham Eagles at BC Place on Saturday in the BC high school football AA title game. “I thought the boys played hard, but then we had some adversity and you have to battle through that if you want to be a

They played a hell of a football game and they were the better team today.” He said losing Claypool hurt, but it was the Eagles’ offensive attack that sunk the Panthers’ title dreams. “We’ve lost Chase before and we had opportunities to score and win,” he said. “But they were just very good offensively and we couldn’t keep pace. He didn’t return until later in the second half, and played through pain to throw a touchdown pass to Maasin Thompson. Abbotsford had a 21-20 lead at halftime, but quarterback Tyler Nylander and the Eagles turned it on in the second half. Carson Graham was up 46-28 after three quarters and the teams traded touchdowns in the fourth. Samwell Uko had two touchdowns for the Panthers, one on the ground and one after a kick-off return. Thompson also had two touchdowns, while Richard Tshimpaka scored a rushing touchdown and caught two interceptions. Despite the loss, Fujimura said it was a season to remember. The Panthers reached a provincial title game for the first time since 1984, and he said he’s proud of his team. “We had a really good season, one of the best we’ve ever had at Abby,” he said. “They did a lot of good things this year and I’m proud of how hard they worked and battled. Unfortunately, you can’t win them all.” It’s the end of the road for graduating seniors Claypool, Tshimpaka, James Parker, Mike Sabourin, Manny Jhally, Jeremy Goldie, Harmin Gill, Harjot Lalli, Tajan Sangera, Patrick Janda, Jesse Clifford, and Jon Anderson. The Abbotsford Pilots are heating up, and have now won five straight games. The Pilots beat the Aldergrove Kodiaks 6-5 at home on Friday, fueled by big performances from forwards Alexander Methorst and Dryden Michaud. The pair scored two goals apiece to help the Pilots avenge a 5-1 loss to the Kodiaks on Nov. 7. Head coach Jim Cowden said he liked his team’s effort. “Throughout the game they couldn’t handle our speed, but we let them back in the game in the second period,” he said. “We fell asleep for a bit in the second, but I thought for the most part we played well...” Sean Olson opened the scoring early in the first, but the Kodiaks scored two unanswered goals to end the first period up 2-1. The Pilots grabbed the lead back with goals from Jackson

Pilots forward Jackson Waniek dekes around an Aldergrove defender during PJHL action on Friday. Waniek and Methorst, but the Kodiaks tied it up again at three. Michaud then scored a goal with two seconds left in the second to give the Pilots a lead they would not let go. Michaud and Methorst both scored again in the third, but the Kodiaks scored a pair of goals to close the gap to one. New Pilots goalie Lucas Mills picked up his first Pacific Junior Hockey League win, and made 29 saves. Cowden said regular starter Jacob Crawford was sick and unavailable, and Mills was a trade deadline pickup by the Pilots. Abbotsford also had to call up an affiliate goalie to back up Mills on Friday. He had previously been playing with the Burnaby Winter Club’s midget AAA team. Cowden said Mills was solid in his debut. “There were a few goals he’d like to have back, but I thought he was good.” The Pilots continued their winning ways on Saturday, with a 4-2 win over the Mission City Outlaws. Abbotsford took a 2-0 lead early in he second period, after goals from Olson and Cole Methorst. Alexander Methorst and Hayden Guilderson scored the Pilots’ other goals. Mills stopped 33 of 35 shots to earn his second win in two days. The loss was just the sixth of the season for the top-ranked Outlaws, but three of those losses have come at the hands of the Pilots. Abbotsford’s record is now 17 wins, nine losses and one overtime loss, and they are in second place in the Harold Brittain conference. The Pilots next travel to Richmond on Thursday, and then host the Grandview Steelers at MSA Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Friday’s game is the 17th annual teddy bear toss game, with fans having the opportunity to toss a stuffed animal onto the ice after the Pilots score their first goal. All of the donations go to the local Salvation Army for underprivileged children this holiday season.

Olga Papou, (nee Retzlaff) aged 79 of Abbotsford, B.C. passed away on December 4th, 2015. Olga was predeceased by her husband, Alex, in April 2014. Olga will be lovingly remembered by many generations of relatives including the Retzlaff and Papou families and missed by her longtime friends, Mary, Ruby and Mandy. Born on November 11, 1936 at Ethelbert, Manitoba, Olga was the youngest of eight siblings and is survived by her brother, Vic Retzlaff (Marg), and sisters, Eva Esau and Kay Retzlaff. Later the family moved to B.C. and she spent a great deal of time on acreages in the Mt. Lehman and Arnold areas. In 1978 she married her loving husband, Alex, and in 1980 they moved to Kelowna because Olga was suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis and the drier climate would be good for her. Eventually they moved back to the Abbotsford area and they were active members of the Abbotsford Baptist Church. Olga had many friends at the church who visited her often. Olga’s health continued to deteriorate due to arthritis and in 2010, Olga moved to Menno Home. In spite of her physical limitations, Olga never lost her faith and trust in the Lord. Her strength, courage and determination was such an inspiration to many. A special thanks to the staff at Menno Home who took such good care of Olga. She will be missed! A reception will be held at 1:30 pm, Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com

DAVIS (NOSATY), Diane Marie May 16, 1951 - December 4, 2015 The World lost a shining light on December 4th when Diane Davis passed away after a courageous fight with cancer. So many positive adjectives could be applied to Diane: artistic; humble; sensual; strong; fun; compassionate; dedicated; determined; hilarious; adventurous. She filled her life with beautiful music, books, art and living things, and while she was very comfortable in solitude she was also a loving and fiercely loyal friend and partner. Those who knew Diane will remember her radiant smile, so natural and genuine, and the laughter that came so easily to her lips. Diane spent most of her professional career in educational media, working for over three decades at what would eventually become the University of the Fraser Valley, where she retired as a graphic designer, producer and photographer in 2012. Late in her life she was able to indulge her spirit of adventure and love of travel with journeys in Cuba, Mexico, England, Scotland, America and Western Canada. When she learned that she had late-stage cancer in 2013, she faced her disease with optimism and bravery that both comforted and awed those who loved and supported her. She is cherished and sadly missed by her best friend and husband Greg; son Ryland Sweeney; Mother Olive Nosaty; Sister Loretta Latta; brothers Henry, Randy and Terry Nosaty; and devoted dog Chloe. As per Diane’s wishes no service will be held. Those wanting to honor Diane’s memory are encouraged to make a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society. On line tributes and condolences may be offered at Henderson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements, 604-792-1344 www.hendersonsfunerals.com
