Filmmaking siblings cash in Matthew and Alexz Johnson are getting positive feedback for their short film, The Dishwasher. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
Born and raised in Maple Ridge, sibling duo Matthew and Alexz Johnson recently won a $10,000 grant towards their short film The Dishwasher, after being selected as one of 30 finalists in a competition hosted by the TELUS’ program STORYHIVE. The first round of the competition asked filmmakers to create storyboards and pitch their film idea on camera, and then post it online. The community could then vote on short films they felt deserved Matthew the funding. Johnson For the siblings, their partnership on The Dishwasher has allowed them to work together – something they’ve wanted to do for some time. “We’ve been wanting to work together for ages, and we just never found the right project to align on,” Matthew said. Alexz, producer for the digital Alexz short, has always led her career by Johnson “keeping it in the family – friends included,” and from a family of 10 has worked with two of her other brothers on past projects. “[Matthew’s] my older brother so there’s always gonna be that natural respect, and I think he respects my experiences,” Alexz said. When Matthew sent his sister the script for The Dishwasher, their partnership was decided. Matthew, scriptwriter and director for The Dishwasher, has always “harboured a dream” that one day he would be able to find a career in film writing. More: mrtimes.com, search ‘The Dishwasher’

Woodworking ‘elves’ busy Just in time for Christmas, wood craft items created by people with differing abilities can be ordered, via Facebook. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com
Paintbrushes in hand, a handful of “elves” toiled away inside a woodshop in east Maple Ridge recently. These “elves” are people with differing abilities, and their wordworking talents are showcased through the Greenwood Creations Woodshop. Wood craft items for homes and businesses are created inside the woodshop and 100 per cent of all profits are returned to the team members. Program coordinator Pam Moore said the 22 team members from the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living are now focused on Christmas items, but throughout the year, create garden benches, patio furniture, and a variety of home decor items. “Adults come in and our staff teaches and trains them,” Moore explained. “We teach them painting skills, or any woodworking skills on machines, and they are always working with a

Orders are started at a woodshop designated for cutting and sanding, then moved to the finishing shop where the items are stained and painted. The program has been operating for more than 20 years but over the last five years, it’s “really taken off, where the community has been aware of us,” Moore said. The more items Greenwood Creations made
for the community, the more members joined the team. Items can be ordered and/or purchased through the Greenwood Creations’ Facebook page or by calling 604-462-7663. Moore said the program benefits both members and staff. “They come in here, some very nervous about the machines, and within… a month if not sooner for some people, when they see taking a plain piece of wood and making it into a beautiful piece of product from start to finish, they get to see all the steps,” Moore said.
“They see what they created. They haven’t started something and then shipped it off. They finished it, right from start to finish. Every one of us is involved with every item we do, no matter what is made.” As for her own experience, Moore said, “I could talk forever and ever about these guys. I am so proud of them.” She added, “I am very honoured to be part of this because it’s making our community aware of the abilities that [our members] do have, and we’re very capable of making beautiful products for our community.”

‘Safe Students send shoes to Sierra Leone 6 and 7 pupils City’ Grade are acting locally and wraps thinking globally. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Ridge Meadows RCMP completed a pilot project dubbed “Safe City,” at the end of November. The project took place between Nov. 23 and 27, and was aimed at educating firearm owners on laws surrounding the registration requirements for restricted and prohibited firearms. During the project, Ridge Meadows RCMP officers visited local homes where owners of restricted and prohibited firearms lived, and whose registrations were shown as being expired. A total of 83 firearms were turned over to police, with “the vast majority” of owners requesting the police safeguard their firearms, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Supt. Dave Fleugel. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘firearms’
ASHLEY WADHWANI
ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
The combined Grade 6 and 7 class at Edith McDermott Elementary School is looking for your gently-used shoes for children in Sierra Leone, Africa. The class of 30 students are hoping to collect 300 pairs of shoes of all sizes to donate to Ruben’s Shoes, an organization in Port Moody that sent more than 12,000 shoes to the Dominican Republic in 2013. In November, the class was asked to “think globally,” by teacher Keith Allan who had heard about the campaign from a friend. After researching Ruben’s Shoes, students quickly learned that “if you don’t have shoes you can’t go to school,” Dustin, Grade 7, said. Ruben’s Shoes, created in 2012, has expanded this year in supplying shoes to areas of the Dominican Republic and now Sierra Leone. The thought of not having the basic necessity of shoes was unsettling to the group of students and “not fair,” they said. “We have to look out for each other so everyone has the same opportunities,” Grade 7 student Campbell Currie said. Grade 6 student Talisa Vairo added that the campaign “is a good idea, so kids can run

The interest the students have shown in the project has translated into hands on learning during class time, where the students broke into groups and devised a plan to reach out to their peers for donations. Each group is responsible for one aspect of campaigning for shoes, such as maintaining social media, announcements
at the school, collecting the shoes from the classroom, and sorting the shoes, Allan said. For Allan, the project has encouraged his students to utilize the Internet for more than just games, creating an information page for the school website and starting an Instagram account called @shoes_eme. The students will continue documenting their efforts on Instagram, and are collecting shoes until Dec. 18. > More: mrtimes.com, search, ‘Ruben’

Economy might need a big boost pretty soon
T
hings are ticking along okay here in B.C., at least as far as the economy goes. Our unemployment rate is lower than the Canadian average by almost a full percentage point. We aren’t doing so bad on home construction, and if there’s been any bad economic news, it hasn’t affected the price of housing. But Canada just weathered a brief blip of a technical recession, and we aren’t doing as well as our neighbours down south when it comes to unemployment and growth. And now the head of the Bank of Canada, which backstops much of our financial system, says he’s prepared to offer negative interest rates. That would mean institutions parking their money with the Bank of Canada would be charged for doing so. The reverse would be the equivalent of being paid to hold a mortgage. (Don’t hold your breath waiting for your local bank to offer this one.) If Canada is in generally good shape, but a bit battered, why is one of our top economic wizards considering the use of increasingly powerful economic stimulants? The first reason is Alberta. For decades, one of Canada’s wealthiest provinces relied on oil and not much else to power its economy. Now oil is increasingly cheap – under $40 a barrel as of this week – and it’s uncertain when, or if, it will ever rebound to $100 again. The second reason is a sluggishness in the economy. When the Canadian dollar drops, our goods are supposed to become more attractive to the U.S. in particular and the rest of the world in general. But resources are in a slump, and manufacturing isn’t picking up the slack. Currently, the extreme measures contemplated by the Bank of Canada aren’t being pulled out. But the fact that officials are talking about them, getting them ready, is a signal that they want to be sure we can avoid something bad that may be coming. –TIMES

tery (the print in Catcher In The Rye was too small to read by candlelight), tonight the book itself is throwing more light than our emergency candles ever did. Other than that, it seems worse, because we’re so much more dependent on the electricity that tonight’s storm is withholding. And since the main household computer has no more to offer than a dead screen as empty as a politician’s brain, my deadline has become a tunnel with no discernible light at the end. I thought about writing this longhand, by lamplight, with pen and paper... but let’s face it, I’ve grown lazy. I can think of a host of reasons – some are even good reasons – why I shouldn’t bother. For one thing, it’s much easier dictating my thoughts (or the absence thereof) into my iPhone, so long as the battery lasts. And I could always claim tomorrow (or whenever) that, without power to my home office, I couldn’t send my work out: “I wrote the column on time – honest
– but I had to wait for the electricity to come back on to send it to you. Honest!” The extra “honest” adds an especially sincere touch, doesn’t it? Besides, in this day and age, no one expects anything of anyone handicapped by a power outage. It’s the perfect excuse for doing nothing. The perfect excuse, that is, for everyone except the Hydro crews trying to shove the pieces of electricity back into the power lines... or whatever it is they’re doing out there. The Hydro folks serve two functions on a night like this. Certainly, they defy the blasting winds and rain to make the electric stuff flow again so that all the things in our lives can get back to the way they’re supposed to be. Perhaps more importantly, however, they give the rest of us something to complain about when they never do it fast enough. Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online this week at mrtimes.com

Letters Banning medication ‘cruel’ decision Dear Editor, Besides appointing 49 patronage positions in the last dying days of his rule, the Steven Harper government also took one last kick at myself and thousands of other Canadians. On or about Sept. 17, he made the medication I have successfully controlled my fibromyalgia with for 17 years illegal to buy in Canada. Maybe it is dangerous you say – well, it has been around for over 400 years and it was not even a prescription drug in Canada or the U.S., not to mention 17 years of personal use with no harmful side effects. In fact, it is one of the very few drugs that has no known side effects, I think it is reasonable to say in 400 years, its side affects would be very well known. The drug Guaifenesin is used in dozens of medications such as cough medicines, as it dissolves phlegm, mucus, phosphoric acid, and uric acid and is also a muscle relaxer, so thousands of Canadians use it
successfully to treat their fibromyalgia which is a build up of phosphoric acid. I tried years ago to stop using it when they raised the price 500 per cent and that turned out badly with all my symptoms coming back rapidly, and I had no choice but to go back on it. But this is not the real story, here. The problem has nothing to do with how good or bad Guaifenesin is, it has to do with being an old, un-patentable drug, so the big pharmaceutical companies can’t charge outrageous fees for this proven drug. The problem is, it takes millions of dollars to okay a drug and no one will pay to do this for un-patentable drugs, so big “Pharma wants to get rid of these drugs so they can sell you one of their patented cash cows which comes with a dozen serious side effects, that they will gladly sell you another drug to control the side effects. Nobody does anything for
nothing so I would like to know what politician or public servant got what, to make it impossible to control my condition, fibromyalgia. In 1997 I was told by a rheumatologist to “just keep doing whatever you are doing because anybody that was like you were in 1991 should be in a wheelchair by now. Make no mistake, this shall be the fate of many effective medications that are also un-patentable, and it is already happening to many of the medications naturopaths use regularly. Well, thanks to some ignorant or greedy politician, myself and thousands of fibromyalgia sufferers are faced with a painful, bleak future, and even a wheelchair. This stupid, cruel decision has to be reversed. I have been without my medication for six weeks, now, and already I am getting aches and pains in my hands, forearms, elbows, shoulders, back, hips, legs, and feet. Wayne Clark, Maple Ridge

Facebook feedback
City of Maple Ridge won two awards from the Metro Vancouver chapter of Commercial Real Estate Development Association, crowning this community as the ‘most improved’ and ‘most business friendly’ in the region. Readers offered mixed reactions.
“Most business friendly? What?!!! We have no decent retail shopping and most of the stores that open close within a couple of years. Maybe the chapter of commercial real estate counted the business licences the City puts out. Yeah, that must be it. – Sonja Ogden “This type of acknowledgement encourages new businesses and development to invest in Maple Ridge, it is a good news story and a step in the right direction. – Deb Walters “This is promising. The new council has only been in place for a year. They have decades of inaction to make up for. – Blake Whitelaw “Business friendly for what? Sushi restaurant? Bahahahaha... – Natalie Whelan “Expecting a pat on the back? You and council get paid very well. – Alvin Cohen

This is a problem not because they do not get letter grades, it is a problem about their parents’ teaching values. If a child needs to be motivated by letter grades, that is a problem. When a child grows up expecting grades, he or she will only do something if they get paid. They would not volunteer helping someone in need, because they are not rewarded financially. Why hold elections for political leaders? We do not hold elections for political leaders for one thing. If the implication is political leaders
will not be motivated growing up without grades, that is really stretching reality. Politicians are a good example of people who are not motivated by grades or money. Politicians are motivated by desire to help in a way that supports their values. They want to do the best they can. School grades are to give parents some idea of their child’s performance. Grades are subjective values of tests and do not reflect the child’s actual performance, nor do not value if the child is a bully or lacks empathy. Grades do not measure values, attitude, or interest. Dan Banov, Maple Ridge
Taxi snub appalling Dear Editor, I have never been so appalled in my life. I was helping my friend to get a safe ride home. My partner and I were walking him out to a taxi. We had a bucket just in case he was not going to be a clean passenger. The taxi sped away as though we were ISIS. The driver didn’t even ask a question. How is this okay? Jason Stefan, via email

THANK YOU residents of Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows
By nine o’clock in the morning on Dec. 3, a couple hours after Maple Ridge’s Wal-Mart opened its doors to the public for the first time ever, parking was at a premium in the lot off 224th Street. There was also a spillover of vehicles filling the majority of the spaces on the south side of the Haney Place Mall property next to Wal-Mart, which replaces Target as the mall’s anchor store. It was clear shoppers in Maple Ridge were chomping at the bit for the retail giant’s “soft” opening, three weeks before Christmas Eve. Chynna Porter, mom to two toddler-aged daughters, and a new baby on the way, said Wal-Mart’s convenience makes it “the best place to shop.” “Everything’s cheaper, and they have everything,” Porter said. She believes Wal-Mart’s presence will benefit other mall merchants. “It will bring more people here,” she said. Brenda Balfour echoed Porter’s sentiment. Asked about the attraction to Wal-Mart, she replied, “Everything.” “The cheap prices, everything all at once, you don’t have to go to different stores
Troy Landreville/TIMES
Shoppers flowed in and out of the Wal-Mart at Haney Place Mall on Thursday morning, Dec. 3 for things, it’s close. I [used to] go to Mission or I go to PoCo to the Wal-Mart [in those cities].” Melaina Neufeld said WalMart’s arrival in Maple Ridge “is a good thing.” “Maple Ridge needs to grow,” she said, adding that “More people will check out the mall.” Neufeld said she’ll shop at Wal-Mart “all the time,” now that it’s here. “I buy formula and diapers from Wal-Mart because they have the best prices,” she said. It was announced in the spring that Wal-Mart was buying 13 of the former Target Canada stores, including the one at Haney Place Mall. The Target at Haney Place opened in November 2013 and closed this past January. This is the third go-round in three-and-a-half years for an
anchor store at the downtown mall. Zellers closed at Haney Place in February 2013 to make way for Target, which had bought out the lease. Scott Kraft was one of WalMart’s morning patrons Dec. 3, and said Wal-Mart and Target are “pretty much the same thing.” “They just sell produce now,” Kraft said, of Wal-Mart. “What’s the difference?” he elaborated. “Zellers, Target, Wal-Mart – it’s all the same thing, they’re just switching the sign at the front.” Wal-Mart manager Dave McKinlay said he was very excited to be managing the Maple Ridge location, believing it will be a key addition to the mall.

Kindness in people’s hearts:
Donna Deane-Freeman and a group of her retired School District 42 friends, who call themselves The Fossils, spent a few weeks gathering 40 Ziploc bags of toiletries for unwed mothers and/or young girls struggling in the community. The packs included items such as nail polish, gum, toothbrushes and paste, soap, body wash, wipes, shampoo, makeup, deodorant, pens, pencils, and notepads.

Dec. 10 Cinema Politica • Cinema Politica presents a screening of Hoodwinked: The Myth of Free Trade, at Maple Ridge City hall, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Event is free, and all ages are welcome.
TIMES Travellers:
During a recent excursion to Peru, Maple Ridge’s Helen Laity climbed all over Machu Picchu, with what she called her “favourite” hometown newspaper, The TIMES. She then floated on Lake Titcaca with “delightful little Peruvian ladies” singing Row, row, row your boat and Alouette.
Colourful display: Natasha Brayshaw stood next to her painting during Nuestro Taller de Pintura (The Art of the Studio), an art show and sale held Nov. 27 and 28 at Vicuna Art Studio and Gallery. The event, showcasing the work of Vicuna’s artists, was presented by Vicuna along with PotteryWorks.
ONE PERSON’S STORY
Alcoholic glad he chose Caring Place over bus Two-and-a-half years later, Ron Nims is clean and sober.
But instead, he made the conscious decision to seek help that day – not just for his drinking, but to finally address all the issues in his life that had propelled him into the bottle. Today, at age 65, the Maple Ridge man is on his feet again, participating in the Caring Place’s transitional housing program, and working with a number of different groups and counsellors to move past a lifetime of hurt. “It’s been a long journey,” Nims said. He still has a long ways to go, but said he is pleased that he can see a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
ROXANNE HOOPER rhooper@mrtimes.com
Two-and-a-half years ago Ron Nims dragged himself out of a ditch along Lougheed Highway, asking himself whether he should step in front of a passing bus or finally attempt to face his abusive past. Death-by-bus was a real option for the man struggling with so much pain.
Ron Nims spoke to a crowd of 120.

He credits the Salvation Army for saving his life. “They’ve been a Godsend,” Nims added. “What can you say about people who will go to any lengths… who will take your hand and walk you through… who will be there to help lift you up … without that – without them – I wouldn’t be alive.” Choking up ocassionally during his presentation, he shared a snapshot of that personal journey with 120 guests at the Caring Place’s annual Dignity Breakfast at South Bonson Community Centre last week. >More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Nims’

Firefighters collecting for families in need Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows fire crews will be out Saturday. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
Firefighters in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will be collecting food, funds and new toys outside grocery stores on Saturday Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Firefighters For Families, which started in 2002, is a way for the local firefighters to help their community in a different way from their day job. “When people are injured or in need of medical assistance, we are there to try and do their best to get them through this,” Brad Perrie, assistant Pitt Meadows fire chief, said. “This is a different kind of help... to help them get through the time that is hardest for them.” Roughly 20 Pitt Meadows members have committed to spending a few hours outside the new Save-On-Foods, Superstore, or the B.C. Liquor Store in Meadowtown Centre. “We usually have no problem getting members to donate their time – that’s just who we are,”
Perrie said, on the members’ eagerness to participate. “The person who wants to be a volunteer or career firefighter... there’s makeup in their DNA that they need to serve, this is just part of it. “Whether it’s a food and toy drive or the Burn Fund, the community relies on their volunteers to step up.” Typically, the Pitt Meadows crew collects about $6,000 that is then taken back to the hall to be sorted by volunteers from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society and the Friends In Need Food Bank. For Perrie, their day of volunteering is only one piece to the larger picture of giving back to the community. “We’re just the medium of collecting,” he said. “The real people who make it happen are those who make the stuff we collect get to the people.” The incoming donations are divided, with the food bank receiving the food donations, the hamper receiving the toys, and the money being split 50/50 between the two charities. Volunteers from the Pitt Meadows Lions Club tend to the station’s phone lines, Perrie said, in case the firefighters need to

leave for an emergency. The crews want to make it fun, too, and last year wore their turnout gear due to the weather. The way the forecast is looking, Perrie said, it may be a turn-
out jacket and toque day but the event will “go ahead no matter what.” The Maple Ridge Fire Rescue will be outside all three Maple Ridge Save-On-Foods locations,
Thrifty Foods, Extra Foods and Safeway. Last year, the Maple Ridge crew’s efforts collected a total of about $16,000 for the two charities.

The 1st Haney Scouts are back in action this Christmas season, once again selling Christmas trees outside Cap’s Westwood Cycle in Maple Ridge, on the Lougheed Highway. And thanks to the success of last year’s sales, the group has increased their supply to a total of 610 trees, said troop leader Christi Goncalves. As of this past Tuesday, 247 trees

have been bought, and those interested in grabbing their own tree should act fast. “We have two big weekends of sales coming up, and we have a fresh truck load coming in on the next two Fridays,” Goncalves said. However, she added that last year, the lot was sold out the weekend before Christmas. Funds from the tree sales help support scouting activities like camping and field trips, as well as provide funds for things like equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement. “We’d really like to thank the families of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows
in advance for all their support of our group,” said Goncalves. But there’s more to it than money. “The volunteers from our scout group find great joy in putting the tree lot together,” she explained. “It brings us closer together and it’s a pretty neat feeling to be part of so many families’ Christmas traditions.” All the trees are bought by the scouts from local suppliers throughout the Fraser Valley, she noted. The lot, located at 21626 Lougheed Hwy, is open Monday to Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Rain jackets and umbrellas were the accessories of choice at Saturday’s Christmas in The Park and Santa Claus Parade. Families gathered along 224 Street in anticipation of the bright lights and parade floats, despite the wet weather. As for most of the children in raincoats and ponchos, the puddles merely added to the fun. For Ryan Connolly, three, and Connor Robinson, two, the rain played More online, no part search in taking ‘parade’ away their excitement for candy canes and chocolate. We don’t have a huge ton of events like this in [Maple Ridge],” Ryan’s mom Ashlie said. The family friends spent the evening looking at the live nativity scene which included a calf and donkey provided by Matt Laity from Brookfield Farms, and enjoyed marshmallows on a stick.
For Ryan, the lights were most exciting. For Conner, when asked which parade float was his favourite, his eyes grew wide and he couldn’t help but let out a gasp as a husky pulling a wagon decorated with bright lights walked past. “He loves anything animal related,” his mom said, laughing. The parade – which had council member Fred Arsmtrong as emcee – included 50 floats, including the Otter 4H Llama Club, the Dance FX School of Dance, and the Christmas Haven.

Pitt Meadows gets in the Christmas spirit: In what
turned out to be the nicest weather for the three big community Christmas events this past weekend, friends and families came out to Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows on Friday night. A Pitt Meadows Christmas, the annual kickoff to the season, included appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the official treelighting, festive musical performances, sculpting of a chair made out of snow, and participation by a variety of vendors. Activities such as storytime, crafts, and more took place inside the rec centre as well, helping to get More online all those who attended into the Christmas spirit.

Windy night lights An annual Christmas event was cut short due to weather. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com
This year’s annual Osprey Village treelighting event on Sunday night blew people away both literally and figuratively. The event, which was originally scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m., was cut short just before 6:30, but not before the tree was lit around 6 p.m, for a cheery crowd. High winds blew through the village with force, tossing bulbs from the tree, blowing vendor tents around, and effectively shutting down the live music performances.

SAY CHEESE
Free photos bring smiles to 99 families Locals posed for professional photos with loved ones at an annual Help Portrait event. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
Tristan Lambert quickly fixed his hair beside sister Elise Lambert before giving his best smile for photographer Alan Bailward at Saturday’s annual Help Portrait at Golden Ears United Church. Their mom, Amanda Lambert, watched with an even bigger smile as her kids said “cheese.” On Saturday afternoon, Help Portrait gave 99 families-who otherwise could
not afford professional family photos- the chance to smile for the camera and leave with a framed photo, free of charge. Family members could get camera-ready with help from volunteer make-up artists and hair dressers. This year was Lambert’s second year “capturing a moment in time” with her two children. Last year, when Lambert heard about Help Portrait, she was worried she would be ineligible for the free family photos. Many services require beneficiaries to have certain income qualifications, Lambert said. “I was hesitant that I wouldn’t make the criteria for Help Portrait,” Lambert said. “But it’s for everybody... I see all ages and demographics here.”

Maple Ridge resident Rod Helfenstein also posed with his family – three spaniels named Molly Lady Ruskin, Rachelle Spanielle, and Rodney. For Helfenstein, including his four-legged family “meant the world,” to him. Helfenstein was equally appreciative of all the volunteers. “The fact that people can
get together and in some way share their experiences just means the world,” he said. Bailward, a local photographer, was one of 50 volunteers who helped the event “run very smoothly,” according to coordinatorBrenda Garcia “I can’t help build a house – I’m pretty useless with renovations – but, I
can help out with this,” Bailward said. “I am always amazed at the camaraderie of the volunteers and the generosity of the local businesses and residents that donate to make our event happen,” Garcia said. “It brings to light the remarkable community spirit we have here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.”

Strip-a-thon raises bar The 21st annual charity event at the CaddyShack set a new mark for amount of funds raised.
TROY LANDREVILLE
It’s official: Sunday’s strip-a-thon at the CaddyShack was the biggest and best in the fundraiser’s 21-year history. The Dec. 6 event supporting the Maple RidgePitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society raised a record $26,670 for the cause. One hundred per cent of the cash will go to the society, which gives toys, gifts, and gift certificates
Holiday Waste Pickup Schedule There will be no residential pickup service on Friday, December 25, or Friday, January 1. During Christmas week and New Year’s week, Friday pickups will take place on the following Monday. If you experience problems with pickup, please call Waste Management directly at 604.520.7800. To check the schedule, visit www.pittmeadows.bc.ca/ waste. You can also download our smartphone app, My Waste, from our website or from the Apple or Google Play Stores for pickup schedules and resources on what to recycle and where to take recyclable items not picked up at the curbside. A copy of the residential pickup schedule was also mailed to each household in August.
for food to local families in need during the holidays. “The event as a whole was great,” said Yvan Charette, general manager and co-owner of the Haney Hotel. “I was very proud of the staff, the performers and the volunteers who made this day a great success.” Charette added, “the Grinch won’t steal Christmas from Maple Ridge this year!” The hamper is based at the Albion Fairgrounds.

Where the donkey and duck meet
DEC 2
Together we raised over $11000 for The Salvation Army’s essential services in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows
An exhibit enters its sixth season at The ACT.
Thank you to our 2015 event sponsors
ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
The sixth annual Ensemble exhibit is on display at the ACT Art Gallery, showcasing established and professional artists from around the Fraser Valley. This is Tammy Routley’s fourth year partcipating in the collaborative exhibit. “I really like the concept of it being a group show, each artist can include a few pieces,” said the Maple Ridge artist. Ensemble accepts three to five pieces of works from each artist, whereas other exhibits typically accept only one or two pieces, Tammy Routley image Routley said. That’s often not enough for viewers to fully see an artist’s work, she explained. “It’s nice to have a little ensemble for each artist – it’s more interesting.” Routley’s Sharpie-onpaper collection includes five pieces depicting a friendship between a donkey and a duck. “In a way, I’m kind of a reverse illustrator-drawing first and then the stories come out [later],” she said, encouraging the order of her pieces to be mixed up “to inspire different stories.” What also sets Ensemble apart from other exhibits is the affordability of the art work, said exhibit curator Barbara Duncan. “I’m not surprised that we’ve had amazing sales on this year’s collection,” Duncan explained. “Not only is the artwork very affordable, but each little ensemble seems to have some personal message for the viewer.” As a result, some people have found a “compelling reason” to purchase the art.” Duncan added. The exhibit remains open until Dec. 19.

An important success factor of the recruitment efforts is the Red Carpet Program, where community partners provide potential new doctors with VIP treatment to ensure they and their family members can settle comfortably into our community. “I am proud to be a partner in the Red Carpet Program,” said Jan Hickman, a realtor with RE/MAX Lifestyles Realty. Ridge water polo player hits pool in France
Playing in Europe means adjusting to more than just the time difference.
ERIC ZIMMER
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Victoria Smith’s life “has done a full 360,” as of late. The water polo player, Garibaldi Secondary School 2011 graduate, and communications degree graduate at San Jose University (SJU), is currently in Europe, where she is playing in Lille, France, with the women’s female pro league water polo team. “Honestly, I had no idea what to expect before coming here,” she said. For Smith, a former captain of the silver medal-winning Canadian women’s youth water polo team at the Pan American Games, her experience in France came about somewhat unexpectedly. Having finished her degree in the U.S., she returned to Maple Ridge with the intention of completing a graduate degree at UBC, and found a job at the Meadow Gardens Golf Club’s pro shop.
Special to the TIMES
Maple Ridge’s Victoria Smith posed with a teammate, after winning the French Cup During this time, she was contacted by a sports agent representing a professional women’s polo team in Europe, who told her they had been watching her play during her time at SJU and “waiting for her to graduate.” She made the move and the league
began play in September, with Smith’s team going undefeated in the French women’s professional league. In late November, they won the French championship game, by a score of 15-5. “Playing in Europe is definitely different from Canadian play,” said Smith, who’s
still in France. “The game is a lot more aggressive and you have to adjust with the reffing immediately if you want a chance to continue on in the game.” While North American play tends to rely more on speed, the game in Europe is more about strength, she added. There’s been other adjustments out of the pool as well. “The first month here was definitely a culture shock,” Smith recalled, specifically when it came to the language. “I had some high school French classes, but nothing prepares you for actually having to use it fluently.” The sole focus on water polo took some getting used to as well. In university, she said, she had the sport, along with friends, her studies and a social life. “In pro, it literally is your life and job. I eat, train, and sleep.” To help keep her sane, she said, she’s also explored the city and checked out the European nightlife. “I’ve become close with my teammates because they were the first people I met here in France, and who I spend every day with.” > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Lille’

Wayland athletes grab top spots at pre-season meet
Local competitors represented well in New Westminster.
Athletes from Wayland Trampoline (formerly Quantum Gymnastics) competed at minimeet in New Westminster this past weekend. A “pre-competition season meet,” it was intended to provide athletes, coaches, and judg-
es the chance to get into the swing of competition season,” explained Wayland coach Monika Gulyas. It’s a “great experience for our athletes before the official competition season begins.” Wayland brought 16 athletes to the mini meet, seven of them brand new competitors.
> SPORTS EXTRAS
“All of the athletes performed really well, with each athlete receiving a medal and/or a ribbon in at least one apparatus,” Gulyas noted. “In each level they registered for except for one, Wayland received the first place
medal.” This included: Sienna Kuznak
in the 10 and under trampoline category, Kaley McIsaac in the 10 and under double-mini, Jayden Wicki in Level 1 trampoline, Teagan Kuznak in Level 1 double-mini, Destiny Christensen in Level 2 trampoline, Makayla Tabb in Level 3 double-mini, and Teagan Gratton in Level 3 trampoline. The remaining medals went to Kaley McIsaac, who took second place in 10 and under trampoline and Ruby McIsaac who won third place in the same category
As well, Emma Johnston took second place in the 10 and under double mini, along with Sienna Kuznak, who took third place in the same category as well. Alexis Piso scored second place in Level 1 trampoline, Danielle Swanson won third in Level 1 double-mini, Madyson Dunster took second in Level 2 trampoline, Teagan Gratton was second in Level 2 double-mini, and Julia Power nabbed second place in Level 3 double-mini. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Wayland’
