REQUEST FOR proposals seeks proponent for foot-passenger ferry operator. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
He will be looking for answers, including if the city should be going after a hotel and what developers are interested in building. “Previously we put it out and in reality, we essentially sole-sourced to developers to build a convention centre hotel and we’ve given them all these perks to get them to do it and even with all the perks that we’ve given them we haven’t been successful,” he said. “To me that says something and to me this will make it clear.” The mayor said the project will still be private and land would be sold with the intent developers will build a hotel.
The City of Nanaimo will join the search for passenger ferry operators, despite an earlier agreement with Island Ferries. Nanaimo Port Authority and the city will team up on a request for proposals for a foot-passenger ferry between Nanaimo and Vancouver. The decision comes two weeks after the port authority announced it would seek foot ferry proposals, recognizing community demand for the service and other potential operators than Island Ferries. Island Ferries’ lease to use city property for its catamarans has also expired. According to Tracy Samra, interim city manager, the port board and city council met Monday and key in the decision to join forces was the acknowledgment that neither party will succeed in isolation. Bernie Dumas, president and CEO of the port authority, said other parties are interested. It’s been five years and Island Ferries is still trying to get its financial package in play, noting the company will have an opportunity to participate in the RFP process. Island Ferries spokesman David Marshall said this joint RFP puts in jeopardy its work to secure a final investor, which the port and city were aware of, adding it respects the city’s decision and plans to look at the RFP. The city and port will discuss a location for the ferry service and reach out to other communities, like Parksville and Duncan, to talk about the service.

Council seeks requests for proposals for empty hotel property BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
The City of Nanaimo will hold a competition for the right to build a conference centre hotel downtown, with “significant interest” in the project. The municipality announced Tuesday it will send out a request for proposals in the spring for developers interested in building a hotel at 100 Gordon St. A market study will also be updated to provide council and developers with a better understanding of opportunities and challenges to develop the property adjacent to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

VOL. 27, NO. 61
The RFP, decided on in an in-camera meeting Monday, is a response to a level of interest in the property not seen before, said Mayor Bill McKay, adding multiple, predominantly international parties are interested because of changing market conditions, willingness to find investment outside China, and promotion of the hotel project by the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation. A number of people have asked for letters of intent to deal exclusively with them and there’s hearsay of different visions, including a hotel-condominium mix, according to McKay, who says council wants to see exactly what projects are

being proposed and pick the vision it feels fits best for the community. He also believes this process will be more transparent than just doing a singlesource bidder. “There’s a number of parties that the city and NEDC have been cultivating for some time. Now it’s time for them to get their thinking caps on and envision something that we think is going to be successful for both them and us. Something that we’re going to be proud of,” said McKay, who believes there could be up to four proposals. Coun. Gord Fuller said the process puts the onus on developers instead of the city begging for ideas.

Inbrief Liquor store decision reversed city scene
Board chairman apologizes Nanaimo school board chairman Steve Rae is apologizing for making a rude gesture. Pictures circulated on social media over the weekend of Rae pointing his middle fingers. Rae didn’t want to comment when reached by phone, but referred to a statement where he admitted to being the person in the photograph. “On the evening in question, I was enjoying a personal night out and the public part of my job crossed over into my personal life. With regards to this particular incident, I was not the first to act inappropriately that evening and there are many witnesses that can attest to this. “This does not excuse my actions and for them I feel deep remorse,” said Rae. Dale Burgos, school district spokesman, said it is a board matter and the board will determine what happens next.

high School closure paves way for Brooks landing.
By Tamara Cunningham THe NeWS BulleTIN
The aftertaste is sweet for one liquor store operator, who is close to winning the right to set up at Brooks Landing Shopping Centre despite an earlier decision to deny the application. Nanaimo city council is now one vote away from approving a new liquor store at Brooks Landing on Departure Bay Road. It’s a change in direction from an earlier decision to deny the rezoning application by the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel, which wants to move its Tally-Ho liquor licence to Brooks Landing because of declining sales. A majority of councillors were concerned last September about the proximity to Woodlands Secondary and Cilaire Elementary schools,
as well as fairness for other liquor store proponents who’ve tried and failed to locate at the shopping centre because of city rezoning criteria. Several weeks later, however, politicians reversed the decision to allow the issue to go to public hearing last Thursday. Councillors voted at the meeting to give third reading of the application in a 6-2 vote. Dan Brady, general manager for Howard Johnson Harbourside, said he’s elated and believes an announcement about the closure of Woodlands Secondary was a major factor. “A lot of the councillors had concerns, rightly or wrongly, that the store is going to be too close to the high school and then it was announced the school was going to be closed. I think that changed their minds,” he said. Coun. Gord Fuller was against the application earlier this year, but gave it approval last week, calling it an extremely tough decision. Key for him were changes with provincial
liquor licensing and wine in grocery stores and “the fact that everywhere you look there’s a liquor store or a bar near a public school,” he said, pointing to the distance between the current Tally-Ho liquor store and École Pauline Haarer as an example. Dean Gaudry, owner of Greenrock Liquor Store, has opposed the application since the start. He says city staff members have rebuffed liquor store proponents in the past who wanted to set up at Brooks Landing, including himself, and he wanted politicians to treat this application the same way. The recent decision is flawed, he said, but it’s done. Final adoption for rezoning is expected to go before council in January. Brady hopes to see the liquor store move next April or May.

Off-leash park proposed Nob Hill Park could be going to the dogs after Nob Hill neighbourhood residents sent a petition to the city to create a dog off-leash area in the park. There are currently 12 dog off-leash parks in Nanaimo, mostly introduced as one-year pilot projects that were re-assessed and given permanent status by the Parks and Recreation Commission following their one-year trial periods. A similar trial could be implemented at Nob Hill Park if there is widespread support for the location, otherwise the park will remain as is with a picnic area, trail and playground facilities. A survey to gauge support for a dog offleash area is available online and a public session will also be held Jan. 19 from 4-7 p.m. in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. To learn more and see a map of potential dog off-leash park options, please visit the city website at http://bit. ly/1lsg2ly.

Councillor apologizes Nanaimo city councillor Ian Thorpe made a public apology, in the wake of an investigation into allegations confidential information was leaked from an in-camera meeting. Mayor Bill McKay announced at a public meeting Monday that council completed an investigation into allegations that confidential information was disclosed from an in-camera meeting and said councillors Diane Brennan and Thorpe would make a statement to city council and residents. Thorpe apologized, saying he recently committed a breach of the Community Charter when he commented on information he didn’t realize was still in camera. “This was an error in judgment on my part,” he said. “I have apologized to council and I give assurance that such a mistake will not happen again.” Brennan is seeking legal advice and is expected to make a statement at the next open council meeting.

The Nanaimo RCMP officer who pleaded guilty to assault was sentenced to probation in provincial court Monday. Const. Tim Bedard, an RCMP officer, was
the previous year. A physical altercation ensued and the prisoner sustained injuries, according to the Independent Investigation Office. Bedard also faced discipline from the RCMP, according to Supt. Mark Fisher, Nanaimo commanding officer. “There was a code of conduct investigaton that I ordered shortly after the inci-
dent and that’s been dealt with through internal discipline,” said Fisher. He said he couldn’t comment on what discipline Bedard faced due to privacy issues. Bedard has been on administrative duties since the incident and Fisher said he will eventually return to active duty, although he didn’t have a timeline. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
New chairman chosen to lead regional district Regional District of Nanaimo directors elected Bill Veenhof as their new chairman at the district’s m e e t i n g Tu e s d a y night. Veenhof, Deep Bay and Bowser area director, beat out incumbent Joe Stanhope in a secret ballot and will hold the post until November. Veenhof’s priorities include the regional district strategic plan and the 2016 budget. He also wants to
“empower” staff and directors so they can do their jobs more effectively. “One of the places I’d like to be able to go is to develop a forum for rural directors to get together and just talk about their issues and kind of straighten them out in their own minds,” said Veenhof. Veenhof said municipal directors have their own forum, via their council’s meetings, but there is no such mechanism for
rural directors. Ve e n h o f s a i d a meeting with Mayor Bill McKay and the City of Nanaimo to discuss concerns and expectations is on his to-do list. Colin Haime, Lantzville director and mayor, was acclaimed as deputy chairman for another year. In an in-camera meeting, Dennis Trudeau, general manager of transportation and solid waste, was appointed
interim chief administrative officer, as Paul Thorkelsson has moved on to the District of Saanich. The search for a permanent CAO will continue, Trudeau said. “There will be a report coming to the board on getting consultants to do a Canada-wide search,” said Trudeau. Trudeau said he is interested in taking on the position permanently. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Two chefs help diversify downtown dining Culinary couple blends business, love of cuisine By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Sometimes you just have to take a shot and hope the stars align. Husband and wife culinary team Daniel Caron, chef, and Tammy Deline, pastry chef, took their shot with 2 Chefs Affair on Commercial Street in 2010. In just five years they’ve gone from employing themselves and one server to 38 employees, a catering business and the addition of the Modern Café to their culinary presence in downtown Nanaimo. 2 Chefs Affair didn’t come about by chance, but was a wellresearched decision by a couple who’ve known the
restaurant business all their lives. Deline’s father was a restaurateur in Ontario. Deline studied business management, but it was a job in Germany that turned her on to pastry. “I worked in a big bakery there and it was just phenomenal…” Deline said. “Going from doing stuff in a grocery store to seeing all the pastries in Europe, France, Germany, everywhere, I said ‘I have to go home and do something about this.’ So when I went home I got hired right away at the Chateau Laurier and it was amazing.” The hotel in Ottawa offered her an apprenticeship while she attended school. She and Caron met at the Chateau Laurier and developed their careers through the Fairmont Hotels chain at the Banff Springs Hotel and Waterfront Centre in Vancouver. But prime positions involved thee hours of

daily commuting on top of 14-hour work days. A job interview at the Wesley Street Café in 2001 ended the Lower Mainland rat race. Early in 2015, 2 Chefs moved its catering kitchen into the former Tina’s Diner. They bought the Modern Café in June.
“A restaurant needs multiple pillars to support itself,” Caron said. “If you just have breakfast and lunch, like I had, it’s wobbly. If you add catering, you have a third pillar there. Now you’ve got more stability.” The Modern Café offered a midday and
evening venue, a liquor licence and the dinner restaurant Caron had long wanted to create. Caron and Deline still cook, manage business and put in long days, but have chefs for the 2 Chefs Affair and catering divisions. The couple are part of downtown’s day-to-day complexion as they bustle to and from their restaurants. With the right people in place, Caron is learning to stand back, a little, to let the people they’ve hired run their divisions. “It’s very difficult to find that right chemistry and people with the same drive,” Caron said. “If all they want is money, that’s not what I want. I could give you the money, but you’re not going to give me what I want and that’s love, your passion and your food.” That chemistry in the kitchen includes sharing Caron’s love of collaboration over new dish cre-
ations and pairing wines. On occasion, Caron and Deline get a moment to watch what they’ve created, especially on nights when the Modern’s dining room is humming. “I’ve always loved this room and now with all the brick showing ... and Tammy and I have always liked a lot of art,” Caron said. It means the Modern’s decor and menu is an expression of the two chefs’ tastes they share with everyone. “That’s more us,” Caron said. “I don’t do it because someone tells you to do it. I do it because it feels right and that’s the same as why we purchased the place. It felt right.” Might the two chefs cast an eye toward the recently vacated Acme Food Co. as well? “The place is up for lease,” Deline said. “I don’t want Dan to see that.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

James Bond may have taken his cocktails “shaken, not stirred,” but Harbour City residents can enjoy a number of tasty concoctions that are either-or. Beer and wine can accentuate a night out and people who are out on the town can also sip on a cocktail if the mood strikes them. Jenny Garceau of the Vault Café said her establishment likes to honour the alcoholic spirit that it is using and doesn’t try masking it with something that is too sweet. A lot of the cocktails will have an herbaceous note, with fresh herbs among the ingredients. One of the cocktails on the Vault’s winter drink menu is the maple old fash-

Courtenay Althouse, Rewsters restaurant manager, said she has a yet-unnamed zesty cocktail ready to be unveiled. “So what I do, is I take fresh jalapenos, we take some mint, we take limes and simple syrup and muddle it in with gin and then

James Graham, bartender at the Modern Café, characterized his cocktail menu as eclectic, with some specifically designed to support tourism. That includes one patterned after a chocolatey dessert treat Nanaimo is famous for – the Nanaimo bar. It’s a blend of espresso and chocolate flavours, he said. Graham said customers are looking for simpler cocktails. “There’s a shift where people, I don’t think, are looking for fussy cocktails as much anymore, so we are taking the inspiration from the classic cocktails like Manhattans and sours and things like that,” said Graham.

Revitalization just beginning The city is trying to take the next steps toward a hotel and a foot ferry, but it feels like it’s taking its first steps. The conference-centre hotel project at the Gordon Street site downtown and the passenger-only ferry are priorities that successive city councils and the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation have touted, with very little to show for their exertions. Now, all at once, council has moved to prepare requests for proposals on both files. It was the Nanaimo Port Authority that floated the RFP process for the foot ferry, impatient with Island Ferries’ lack of progress and insistent that another proponent will come forward. The impetus for the hotel RFP, on the other hand, apparently comes from multiple expressions of interest in the site lately. So it could be that there are various ferry operators and hoteliers wishing to invest. We hope that’s the case. But with the city issuing RFPs and asking for ideas, it crystallizes just how little has been accomplished on these files. It’s an admission that on these fronts, Nanaimo doesn’t have a whole heck of a lot going on, so we’re open to anything. Both the hotel and the foot ferry have obvious implications relating to downtown revitalization, and council could find itself facing far-reaching decisions. What sort of proposals are we talking about for Gordon Street? The mayor says it’s hotel or bust, but as we saw with the last would-be proponent, the municipality was prepared to allow a certain number of time-share condominiums in the tower. Is that going to be the only way to get something built on that site? What’s best in the short term for taxpayers burdened by a little-used conference centre? What’s best in the long-term as we dream of developing a downtown that is a destination? Sometimes it feels like we’re close, and then we realize that we’re right back at the RFP process, back at the beginning, where everything is achievable, and nothing has been achieved.

activities outside the southwest and Okanagan. But we’re starting to see signs of the new system of regional Agricultural Land Commission panels working with local governments. The Township of Langley signed a deal with the ALC in July to allow development of farmland near the Langley airport. The agreement says there is a need for a “defensible and durable urban-ALR edge.” If you think everyone loves farming, you’ve likely never lived on this “urban-ALR edge.” The latest example is on Vancouver Island, where urban neighbours are protesting an established farmer’s decision to clear a forested property for hay growing. The farmer has been forced to erect a chain-link fence to keep out trespassers who have decided the property is a park that they can use when they like. The mayors of Saanich and View Royal seem more concerned with appeasing urban complainers than protecting the right to farm. They are being pressed to buy up idle ALR land to soothe urban voters repelled by logging and farming. ◆ Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

We need more modern attitudes to marijuana To the Editor,
Re: Pot shops had to be closed, Editorial, Dec. 3. I’ve only lived in Nanaimo for a few years, but I get the impression that few people here know much about cannabis or the fact that humans have been using the plant for medical, spiritual, and social reasons for thousands of years. The News Bulletin says it supports the police raids of local medical marijuana dispensaries because “they were dealing drugs” and not providing education and other trappings that come with legalization. I

find this surprising, partly because I learned more about cannabis from medical marijuana dispensaries than I did from years of working as a writer at an addictions research office. (I had read and written
about cannabis many times, but I didn’t really ‘get it’ until I got bone cancer and survived my first soul-crushing chemotherapy session. It turned out cannabis was the only drug that could stop me from throwing up and giving up, and it still helps with mood and bouts of debilitating fear.) Dispensary staff taught me which products and methods worked best for nausea, anxiety, mouth sores, and so on. I’m a cannabis advocate today because the plant helped me survive cancer. But I also recognize its
spiritual and recreational value. Of course, as with alcohol and other mindaltering drugs, it is better for young people to avoid using cannabis until their brains have fully developed (or at least not use too much or too often). But, for adults, let’s face it, the most harmful thing about using cannabis is probably the stigma that comes with it. And, problems with the law, for now anyway. I hope our attitudes and behaviours change when the plant is legalized.

Re: World leaders, environmentalists full of CO2, Opinion, Dec. 3. If there’s one thing anyone could bet the bank on, it is that none of this will ever appear in any mainstream media and most certainly it will never be a part of our national broadcaster’s ‘blanket’ coverage of this event, which, in keeping with all blankets will do its best to help us fall asleep. It is obvious from these figures that the only way the global warming proponents could
ever be proved right or wrong is for us to eliminate oil entirely. In view of this, here are questions I would love to hear the fanatics among the ‘green crusade’ answer: Name a product we produce, or activity we engage in that doesn’t have oil as a component somewhere. With what and how would you replace plastic if we got rid of oil? How much oil is required to construct, transport, install and maintain one wind turbine?

To the Editor,
I hear a lot of discussions by the media about the importance of tackling the climate change crisis. The Bible clearly states that the world will be in distress with perplexity in these last days as prophecies unfold. We are seeing old and new testament prophecies unfolding at an alarming rate. The Bible has not failed in its predictions, being 100 per cent accurate, and a close examination will show its divine origin.

Get on with it and save over $80 million a year and Canada’s democratic dignity. In the interim, just fund it $1 per year. Let’s see if any Senator stays on the job as a volunteer. There is no constitutional obligation to fund the Senate. It should be ignored, like the Privy Council and other anachronisms of the 1800s.

The Prime Minister ran on a campaign of hope and the promise of major reform. He can better fulfil that positive message by abolishing that gross insult to our democracy, the Senate. Federal and provincial governments all claim they will reduce the size and cost of unnecessary government. They all admit that Canada is overgoverned. It is a disgrace that Canada maintains an appointed legislative body when most of the world finally agrees an assembly elected by the people is the proper way to govern. Our Senate is nothing

She explains how her songs were created so audience members can gain a greater connection to the lyrics. Her song Merry Christmas to Me was created with a co-writer. They started talking about his Christmas experience, that turned out to be disastrous. He went to celebrate with his girlfriend in her home town but she ended up breaking up with him on Christmas Eve. “He was stuck in the town and it wasn’t even his hometown,” said Anderson. “He had to make his way back home.” They looked at each other and her friend said sarcastically, “yeah, merry Christmas to me,” and that’s how she chose the name. Another, Gingerbread Town, is based on her friend’s family tradition of creating a gingerbread town in the living room. The family builds a complete village.
“When they listen to it they have more of an appreciation of the craft that goes into songwriting,” said Anderson. “It’s just really cool to do that so many people connect on a deeper level to my music.” She also sings some traditional Christmas favourites like O Holy Night, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Walking in a Winter Wonderland. She adds her own tempo and twist on the performance. Anderson said even if the venue is larger she still tries to create an intimate connection with audience members so they feel like part of the performance. She gets them to sing songs. “It’s including them in the performance instead of singing at them,” she said. Last month, Anderson was nominated for a B.C. Country Music Award for Album of the Year. She also performed at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Halifax this September. Anderson performs her Christmas Tour concert Sunday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at Fascinating Rhythm and The Dog’s Ear. arts@nanaimobulletin.com
Bluegrass ensemble discovers musical inspiration in the wild greenery of Vancouver Island BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
There’s something about bluegrass music that feels like home and family for fiddle player Miriam Sonstenes. The musician, a member of The Sweet Lowdown, a band that hails from Victoria, feels a connection to audience members when they clap or stomp their
feet to the tunes. Sonstenes, along with her band mates Amanda Blied on guitar and Shanti Bremer on Banjo are performing a concert in Nanaimo Saturday (Dec. 12) at 7:30 p.m. Vancouver Island is a big influence in the trio’s music. The rough waters off the Island’s shores and wild greenery inspire many of their songs. This

During the concert, the band members share stories about how they create songs. Each member works individually on melodies and then presents them to the group. One song, called Leav-

In a frozen world, sisters Elsa and Anna embark on an adventure that leads them to discover the power of love among family and friends. Their stor y was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen and retold by Disney as Frozen. Tempo Dance Academy is taking the tale and adding its own stamp on it with a musical, dance production of the tale Friday (Dec. 11). For the young cast, the production is a culmination of years of dance training. All of the main dancers have performed in Tempo Dance shows before, but it’s the first time they are main cast members. “It’s been about eight years of productions, but it’s the first time getting to be one of the leads. It’s really cool,” said Katie Brown, who plays Olaf. Tatum Johnson, who plays Prince Hans, said one of the challenges for her was

Riggs is a sweet, social young guy. He needs an experienced home with guardians who are eager to work on his socialization and continue his training. He would benefit from gradual departure exercises and he will feel most comfortable in a setting with lots of structure, calm routine, and positive leadership. He is vocal at times and as with many puppies, can get mouthy when he is excited. Riggs enjoys his dog and human friends but can become easily overwhelmed when meeting new people and dogs. He would do well in obedience class where he can channel his energy and intelligence into something positive. If you’re looking for a new shadow, please ask the staff about Riggs!

LAUGH LOUNGE allows comedians to hone their craft.

By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
It wasn’t that long ago that Nanaimo’s comedy scene was gasping for air. In 2013 one of the few venues that hosted comedy nights was closing its doors. That’s when Andrew Roberts, the founder of Got Pop? Concerts, came up with an idea. “There was about eight to 10 comics locally that would do shows once a month at the old Globe location ... and they were closing up,” Roberts said. Roberts, who had previously attracted comedic acts like Pauly Shore and Charlie Murphy to the city, began searching and landed on the downstairs portion of the Acme Food Co. “It was a perfect room, it was small, intimate but not in a bar setting,” Roberts said. In May of that year the very first Laugh Lounge was held at the Acme Food Co. The once-a-month comedy event typically includes two show times, a headlining act and as many as six other comedians. Roberts said the structure

As a result, dozens of comedians including Peter Hudson, Kim Strynadka and Lil Cory, Jenelle Dmytruk, Nick Schols, Scott Goglin, Deanna Wood can regularly practise their craft in front of a local audience. Nanaimo comedian Malcolm Wright, who has been part of the Laugh Lounge lineup since it started, says the Laugh Lounge has allowed him to meet other comedians. “You meet other comedians, you meet local guys, you meet guys from out of town, you
meet guys who have been on the road for 15 years,” said Wright. As a result of Acme’s closure, the Laugh Lounge relocated to the Old City Station Pub’s banquet room. The next Laugh Lounge features Garrett Clark with Jason Lamb and others on Friday (Dec. 11) at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the pub or www.ticketzone. com.

Travelling to one of the socalled four corners of the earth for the launch of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe was a first. It was also an irresistible opportunity for somebody with wanderlust to make the 7,192-kilometre journey from Vancouver to the tiny island in the north Atlantic. While a chance to drive the sleek new Mercedes GLE Coupe crossover was appealing, it’s fair to say Fogo Island was as big a draw. An ironic thought given the fact that until recently most people were trying to get away – but now a fascinating story is being written here by one of its

GLE suits all kinds of drivers From /23 The biggest jump in performance and price comes with the AMG GLE 63, which is powered by a massive 5.5-litre, turbocharged V8, churning out 577 horsepower. Unfortunately, that version was not available for the island hop. The first two iterations get the new nine-speed automatic transmission, while the top-of-the-line version uses a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. All three come with 4Matic all-wheel drive. We ventured out along twolane roads to take in the sights at the seaside and the inland lakes where the silence begs you to speak in a whisper so as not to disturb the tranquillity. It’s also something the quiet-running GLE respects. Steep inclines were ascended with gazelle-like ease and smoothly thanks to the efficient nine-speed tranny. Curvy stretches were taken in the coupe’s easy stride straightened out by a crackerjack suspension that fought the natural physical tendency for a projectile to roll very well. Standard is the ‘dynamic select’ drive mode system which alters the throttle, steering and transmission. It switches, via the turn of a knob, easily between the settings ‘comfort,’ ‘sport,’ ‘slippery’ (yes, you read that right) and ‘individual.’ The diesel version, kitted with the optional sport package, adds suspension control to the system. The 450 and 63 S trims get the air suspension as standard, and add a ‘sport+’ setting. An ‘intelligent drive’ package adds such safety features as adaptive cruise control with steering assist, blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist. In a cruise control setting, steering assist is activated and that allows the car to drive autonomously for short distances. It gets nervous if you take your hands off the wheel for too long and prompts you to get a grip. As might be expected, the various modes and style of driving will have a varying effect on fuel consumption. As a guide, constant comfort mode us will likely produce a fuel economy of around 10.4/8.2 litres per 100 km (city/highway) with the diesel and 13.6/10.2L/100km (city/highway) in the 450. Cabin styling is classy as you would expect. Up front, the seating is comfy and gripping in the turn and operationally it is definitely user-friendly. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Ford F-150 chosen Green Truck of the Year
The Ford F-150 pickup truck.
The 2016 Ford F-150 has the highest EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of any full-size gasoline pickup on the market at 26 mpg (9.05 litres per 100 kilometres). A segment-exclusive compressed natural gas/propane gaseous fuel prep package is available for 5.0-litre V8equipped F-150 – helping reduce operating costs and tailpipe CO2 emissions. “The 2016 Ford F-150 is a great example of the environmental leadership that can, and should, be accomplished in the immense-

ly popular pickup field,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher, Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. “Milestone lightweighting through the extensive use of aluminum and highstrength steel, the availability of a powerful and efficient 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6, and a segment-exclusive gaseous fuel prep option that enables the F-150 to run on clean-burning compressed natural gas or propane are all important contributions that raise the bar in environmental performance.”
Repreve fiber, made from recycled plastic bottles, is available for F-150’s cloth seats. By using this recycled
material, Ford will divert more than five million plastic bottles from landfills this year.

SALMON, John George October 29, 1942 December 3, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John on December 3, 2015. John was born in Port Alberni but lived all his life in Nanaimo. He began work in the forest industry at age 16, where he remained until his retirement in 2002. He worked in a number of areas, but favored driving logging truck. He and his co-workers kept in touch at their regular “retirees” luncheons which he looked forward to. He loved to fish, not to eat, but to share with others. John enjoyed his many camping trips around the Island, and he especially enjoyed this past summer at Northwest Bay. He is survived by his loving wife Lori of 52 years, sons Rob (Cathy) and Murray (Trina) and three grandchildren whom he cherished, Tyson, Kylynn and Colby. He is also survived by his sister Lorna (Tom) Simpson and brother Jim (Lisa), numerous nieces and nephews very dear to him, and many other extended family. A celebration of life will be held early in the new year, the date to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a donation to a charity of their choice. The family would like to thank the staff and patrons at the Ricky’s Restaurant in Ladysmith, as well as the paramedics and RCMP for their assistance with our loved one. Thank You!

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To all the staff at the cafeteria at Vancouver Island University for allowing me to do my work experience. I enjoyed my time there and had fun learning new bussing and dishwashing skills. BEEF To Nanaimo gas station owners who not only fix prices but also gouge their customers for much higher prices than other places. BOUQUET To my mom, for pushing me to the path of success my whole life. If I have to say something about my mom’s hard work, it’s that if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t know who I am and I wouldn’t be here right now. BEEF The yell-off at Frank Crane Arena between young students who don’t pay to get in has to stop. We pay to watch a hockey game. BOUQUET To my mom, Jennie Jones. Thank you for all your support and for driving me to school at VIU. I love you. BEEF To the “homeless” men on the highway medians who, when given bags of groceries throw them away, but spend their donations at the liquor store all day long. BOUQUET To Harbourfront Library for doing such an awesome job with the renovations and all the hours spent re-cataloguing all the books. BEEF To our library system. Depleted collection worthy of a petition at the downtown branch. Two catalogues, at what cost? Both disappointed and confused. BOUQUET To the beefer complaining about the flu vaccine. There are many strains of flu. Only the strains most prevalent the year before are in the vaccine, so you picked up a different strain. Too bad. BEEF To the Grinches who stole our Christmas lights. We invested our time and money in those lights to brighten our low-income neighbourhood. They were a highlight on Haliburton Street.
BOUQUET To Scot at C+S Transmission Specialties Ltd. and Gord and the guys at Hub City RV for the great service. It’s nice to deal with honest and knowledgeable businessmen who are willing to help without draining the bank. BEEF To the people who installed single-seat bus benches. I can’t lie down for a rest during the sometimes long wait for a bus. There usually isn’t anyone else waiting for it anyway at my stop. BOUQUET To John Horn, the social planner for the city, for implementing the ‘Little Libraries’ throughout the city. They are a delightful addition to a neighbourhood. BEEF To whoever steals toys, PS3 consoles/ controllers/games, DVD players and movies from the children’s unit at Nanaimo hospital. Shame on you. BOUQUET To all who came downtown for the Nov. 11 ceremonies. I hope next year there can be a live feed to the big screen at Diana Krall Plaza so more can actually see the proceedings. BEEF To the people who dump garbage (and boats) in the lot on College Drive above the university. Whoever dumped the most recent load of garbage and construction materials also dumped nails on the road that punctured my tires. BOUQUET To the volunteers at Global Village, the fair trade store in Longwood Station. Their work enables us to find beautiful, affordable gifts while supporting people in the developing world who are working hard to care for their families. BOUQUET To the woman who donated money to the Wesley Street Social Centre where clients of the former Phoenix Centre now meet. BOUQUET To the kind people who came to help me earlier this fall when I fell on the road in front of Shopper’s Drug Mart and broke my leg. Thank you very much.

BOUQUET To Nanaimo Christian School for the great job it did in cleaning up Janes Park. BOUQUET To the staff at Kal-Tire on the Island Highway who went the extra mile in their service when I brought my car in with a possible leaky tire. They fixed the tire and checked over the rest of the car, too.

BOUQUET To Janice from the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre for all the help and the new life you are helping me to achieve. BOUQUET To Quality Foods Turner Road for giving the Lantzville Legion No. 257 Ladies Auxiliary half price on all the food for our Nov. 11 veterans dinner. BOUQUET To a wonderful couple at the Northridge Quality Foods. I was in line with a few items and realized I left my wallet in the car. They offered to pay for my groceries and after politely saying no they insisted quite convincingly. This was by far the kindest gesture anyone has done for me in a very long time. BOUQUET To Bob at Flat Rate Computers for repairing my laptop quickly and at a very affordable price. BOUQUET To Brenda of London Drugs Photo Lab, for going out of her way to make sure my friend’s gift was ready for her birthday.
BOUQUET To the re-design of the library. Spacious, bright and open; it feels less like a drop-in centre, more like a library.
BOUQUET To all the businesses that donated to our Gutsy Walk fundraiser for Crohns and Colitis at the Randerson Ridge craft fair: Browns Social House, Country Grocer, Sears, Purdy’s, Manhattan Gifts, Sweet Peas Kids Krafts, Davids Tea, staff of Bentley, Boston Pizza, and a painting from Sherry Jordan.
BOUQUET To Dr. Jill and the wonderful ladies at Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital for all the care and cookies for my beloved Bella.
BOUQUET To Shanyaa at Best Buy for setting up my new Fitbit Charge HR. Her pleasant, patient manner was very much appreciated.
BOUQUET To the Canadian Tire employee for your fast response and the person(s) who found my little boy, who had become lost and wandered into the busy parking lot. I was terrified when I couldn’t find him and I would not have thought he would leave the store. I was so caught up in the moment, I didn’t get a chance to say thank you.
BOUQUET To Nanaimo Regional General Hospital palliative care unit for giving my friend and roommate kindness and dignity in his last days. My heartfelt thanks. BOUQUET To anyone who considers donating money to the News Bulletin’s Coins for Kids campaign. Thank you.

Clippers getting good goaltending New No. 1 netminder Evan Johnson named as Player of the Week BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
T
he Nanaimo Clippers have been scoring a lot of goals all season long. Now they’re making a lot of saves, too. The team’s new No. 1 goaltender, Evan Johnson, was chosen as the B.C. Hockey League Player of the Week. He won all three of his starts, including two overtime decisions, and posted a .956 save percentage and a 1.25 goals-against average. “It’s definitely an honour,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to be recognized. It’s a really good league, and every player wants that every week.” A lot of times, goaltenders get more than their share of credit, but with the Clippers’ front-line forwards posting such eyepopping statistics this season, Johnson’s netminding had been going under the radar. “He’s been unbelievable for us the last couple weeks…” said Matt Hoover, Clippers centre. “If you make a mistake and you’re confident with your goalie, that he can bail you out, it’s a lot easier to play.” Johnson was a latecomer to the Shipmen, as he started the season with the major junior Medicine Hat Tigers before being sent down in the first month of the season. After Johnson spent some time at home in Winnipeg away from the rink, his friend Zach Court of the Clippers suggested that the goalie consider Nanaimo, even though the the team already had two netminders. “I knew that I had a good

chance to have a spot, whatever that may be,” Johnson said. “I just knew that I wanted to keep playing hockey and this was a good place to come.” He had a bit of a shaky start in Nanaimo, but felt “as long as I did what I could do, I knew I’d be OK.” The team went on to build a win streak, largely backstopped by Johnson, and then last week the Clippers traded their former No. 1 goalie, Jonathan Reinhart, to Alberta’s Brooks Bandits, solidifying Johnson’s ascent. Getting in a lot of games has helped him “get in a good rhythm,” he said.

The 6-foot-1, 190 pounder is an athletic goalie who’s mobile in his crease, works hard back there, and will get a little feisty with opposing forwards who get too close. After limited action with the Tigers, and before that, the Portland Winterhawks and Calgary Hitmen, the 19-yearold is the go-to guy on one of the hottest teams in junior A hockey. “I’ve played on some contenders in the past, and it definitely looks the same here,” he said. “We’re playing really well and hopefully we can continue that.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Some big, strong, tough hockey players would like nothing more than a whole bunch of teddy bears. The Nanaimo Clippers are holding their annual teddy bear toss this Friday (Dec. 11) during their game against the Merritt Centennials at Frank Crane Arena. Fans who come to the rink are encouraged to bring a new plush toy, then throw it on the ice when the Clippers score their first goal of the game. It might not take long – the Clippers are the B.C. Hockey League’s secondhighest-scoring team while the Centennials are allowing the second-most goals per game. Clippers star forward Sheldon Rempal, who has a league-best 34 goals on the year, is the odds-on favourite to score the teddy bear goal, but a lot of his teammates would also love to be the first one to score on Friday. “That would be awesome to score the goal. Hopefully that can happen,” said Matt Hoover, third in the league in goals with 24. “But more importantly, we need to come out with a win here and keep rolling.” All the toys will be donated to the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive. Teddy bears will be available for purchase at the arena that night for $5. GAME ON … The Clips and Cents face off Friday at 7 p.m. The Clippers are home again the next night against the West Kelowna Warriors in a 6 p.m. start. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
