Community SANTA PARADE HAILS START TO CHRISTMAS SEASON It was a great turnout Friday evening for the Santa Claus Parade in Grand Forks. The theme for the parade was “Smokin’ Hot” in honour of all the great firefighters who helped protect us and our property this summer from the wildfires. There were many great floats including this entry from Grand Forks Credit Union. Following the parade, Santa and his helpers lit up the Christmas tree at Gyro Park.

West Kootenay perspective on Paris summit CHELSEA NOVAK West Kootenay Advertiser
The 2015 Paris Climate Conference began on Monday, Nov. 30 and so far Canada has made some significant promises. Montana Burgess, community organizer for West Kootenay EcoSociety and a resident of Krestova, has been on the ground in Paris for the whole of the conference so far, and was also in Paris for Sunday, Nov. 29’s day of climate action. While the march originally planned for that day was cancelled because of the terrorist attacks in November, there were still several actions that took place. “After the terrible attacks in France a few weeks ago, the government kind of locked down Paris, and banned any of the public demonstrations that were planned, including the march and other affiliated events,” said Burgess. “So the NGO coalition here, they had three different alternatives that they put forward.” The first was a website called march4me.org, where Parisians could sign up to ask people from around the world to march on their behalf. The second was a human chain. “They had a human chain that they formed on sidewalks, so not blocking traffic and not having a large number of people gathering in one specific venue, that actually did take place [last] Sunday, and they had a 10,000 person turn out and it was peaceful,” said Burgess. The third took place at the Place de la Republique, where thousands of empty shoes took the place of protesters who couldn’t be there. “There were people doing things, but not nearly to the scale that they had planned, but there was a way for people to stand up for climate action and show their solidarity in line with the rest of the world that was taking part in climate marches that day,” said Burgess. The Place de la Republique is also home to a monument that Burgess said “has become a vigil point,” covered in cards and flowers, as some of the terrorist attacks took place not too far from there. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Catherine McKenna, Canada’s new minister of environment and climate change, and several premieres were in Paris for the beginning of the conference on Monday, Nov. 30. Burgess stopped by a lunch attended by some of Canada’s female premiers, including Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and Christy Clark. “It was neat to have all of these leaders
coming together and reaffirming their commitment to climate action,” said Burgess. Trudeau reconfirmed his commitment to the environment on the first day of the summit and said, “Canada is back.” “Which is great to hear, but we’re not quite sure how he’s back,” Burgess commented the next day. Trudeau did pledge $2.65 billion over the next five years to help developing countries combat climate change at the Commonwealth summit on Friday, Nov. 27, and since the first day in Paris, Canada has made some strides is showing a stronger commitment to fighting climate change. On Sunday, McKenna made a surprising statement, saying that Canada was committed to a global warming increase of no more than 1.5°C by the end of the century. “There’s this idea that we can’t have … global warming increase more than 1.5°C by the end of the century or we’re kind of hooped,” explained Burgess, “and this is what all the NGOs are kind of pushing and want, but before we’ve always been framing it around no more than 2°C by the end of the century, like governments have been saying that, and that’s kind of where negotiations have been. All those vulnerable islands and vulnerable people around the world are like 2°C is too much, 1.5 to stay alive.” McKenna also said that the Paris agreement needed to include language for indigenous and human rights. “It just makes the agreement stronger and more in line with what we actually need,” said Burgess. The Canadian government has also committed to working with provinces to reduce carbon emissions and on Saturday Premier Philippe Couillard announced Quebec will contribute $25.5 million over five years to help French-speaking developing nations fight climate change. Burgess hopes that BC will follow Quebec’s lead on climate change. “I hope BC can do the same thing and step it up more,” she said. This is an improvement over Canada’s performance at past climate talks, but it still may not be enough, as the United Nations has said the emissions-reduction commitments from countries attending the Paris climate summit isn’t even enough to meet the 2°C target. Burgess said efforts will also need to be made at the local level. “Whatever comes out of this, we’re going to need to take it seriously, locally too because it’s not going to be enough, even though it’s going to be a great big step forward, so the West Kootenays and other communities a n d
Thousands of empty shoes took the place of the protestors who couldn’t be there at the Place de la Republique. cities need to figure out what is their fair share and how to transition to a 100 per cent renewable energy economy really quickly,” she said. “It’s a big challenge for the whole world, not just our government.”

Selkirk College music students kick-off the holidays with year-end bash Burgeoning Selkirk College talent will shine in an eclectic night of entertainment when Contemporary Music & Technology Program students hit the stage at Nelson’s Spiritbar on Dec. 18. The traditional Christmas Break Show features student-based bands that have been toiling for several weeks in preparation for a night that will throw a spotlight on talent and hard work. With only a few weeks left in the Fall Semester, students are ready to go out in style with an unforgettable night of diverse, rich and funky sounds. “Creating a show like this gives our students real life experience about what actually goes into putting on a show of this calibre,” says Selkirk College Instructor Laura Landsberg. “There is learning the music, but it goes well beyond that with the marketing and organizing of an event. I’m very excited and proud of what the students have created.” Each of the five ensembles is joined by a Selkirk College instructor who has mentored and collaborated with the students over the last few months. The talent-rich instructors will be on stage with students for the vibrant night of eclectic music. The night begins with 30 Years of Miles who will bring some cool class to the evening. A jazz trio playing the music of Miles Davis, their performance will feature music from the 1950’s and 60’s. The trio is made up of Paul Landsberg (bass), Davis Yates (guitar), and Noah Bredl (drums). Ensemble 13 will tear it up next with a soul-laced infusion of dance hall beats, chilled out treats, deep house vibes and trip-hop tribes. At one with the groove will be Abhijith Kishan (vocals), Michael Tylo (vocals), Kayla Turnbull (vocals), Aybars Savat (drums), Michael Ferrer (bass), Branden Green (guitar), Drey Bombardier (guitar), Devyn Kjorlien (guitar), and John Tucker (keys). SoulTrain will unleash a powerhouse mix of classics and modern hits with the best characteristics of the rhythm & blues genre. From deep grooves, crisp guitar layers, and rich soulful vocals, they will truly be bringing down the house. SoulTrain is Laura Landsberg (vocals), Ami Cheon (vocals), Sallie Salcedo (vocals), Mitch Hahn (guitar), Ryan Mildenberger (guitar), Ana Carita Monaghan (violin), Blair Ferguson (bass), and Brodie Parachoniak (drums). Also in the mix is Van Whalen, a group that will be rocking the music of legendary guitar bands like Rush, Van Halen, and

Students in the Selkirk College Contemporary Music & Technology Program are only a couple rehearsals away from the annual Christmas Break Show that takes place at Nelson’s Spiritbar on December 18. The five bands that will perform include first and second year students, many pictured here before their set at the Selkirk College Gala 2015 that was held at the end of November at Mary Hall in Nelson. The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The band ready to melt faces off includes Steve Parish (drums), James Verishine (bass), Clayton Whalen (guitar), Jon Harder (vocals), and Danya Van Besouw (vocals). Trevor’s Disciples closes the great evening of music. With a nod to the past and a wink to the future, Trevor’s Disciples are a new age Biebercore dance band devoted to getting Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne back together. The disciples are Carmina Biolinao (vocals), Jon Kwak (vocals), Melody Diachun (vocals), Ash Pierce (guitar), Trevor Unruh (guitar), Andrew Yang (guitar), Anna Backus (keys), Lachlan Tocher (bass) and Mitchell Koch (drums). The Year End Celebration Show starts at 9 p.m. (doors open at 8 p.m.) at Spiritbar in Nelson’s Hume Hotel on Friday, December 18th. The cover for the evening is $10 at the door and $5 for students. All proceeds from the evening will be going to the Nelson CARES Society Room to Live campaign which is creating affordable housing for people in Nelson’s downtown core.
Chamber music coming to local schools
Clarinetist Nicola Everton, singer Noemi Kiss, and pianist Sue Gould performed classical music for students at Hume School last week and answered the kids’ questions.
Unwrap smiles this Christmas
Students in the Kootenay Lake district will enjoy chamber music this year thanks to Selkirk Pro Musica, an organization that pairs performing musicians with local schools. Earlier this year brass quintet Fish on Five visited St. Joseph’s school in Nelson, while trio Nicola Everton, Sue Gould and Noemi Kiss visited Hume School. The next performance
will be from saxophonist Clinton Swanson, who will visit Blewett and Rosemont schools in February along with guitarist Doug Stephenson, trumpeter Don Clarke, acoustic bassist Rob Fahie. That will be followed by the Breakwater Quartet, consisting of cellist Jeff Faragher, Fahie, and fiddler Aurora Smith. They will perform for Trafalgar
middle school in March. Jonathan Crow and Andrew Wan, a violin duo, will be playing at Brent Kennedy, W.E. Graham, Winlaw, and the Vallican Whole School in April. Finally, the last concert of the May will be the Sycamore String Quartet, who will perform at South Nelson elementary school along with Homelinks students.

Nasty will be nice and Trail will be ogre-the-moon when Triple Threat students present their production of Shrek The Musical JR. On Dec 12 at The Charles Bailey Theatre. The family-friendly musical comedy follows the adventures of an ogre named Shrek who sets off on a quest to save a princess from a dragon. However, it turns out that in order to ultimately succeed, Shrek must battle an even bigger obstacle: learning how to believe in himself and open his heart to others. “Shrek’s unique story of discovery encourages each of us to examine our prejudices, review what we believe to be our limitations and work to better understand ourselves and others. The actors and crew in this production have embarked on a similar journey, as students and teachers with many different interests have learned

towards the common goal of presenting this musical,” says Gershon. Shrek The Musical JR. follows an ogre named Shrek who has learned the hard way that “people hate the things they cannot understand.” For many years he has protected himself from the hurtful actions of those who are scared of him by living as a recluse in a cozy cesspit. One day, his peaceful swamp is disturbed by new tenants: fairytale misfits — including Pinocchio, the Ugly Duckling, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pan, the Three Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf — have been banished there by the villainous Lord Farquaad. In order to gain back his land, Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue the feisty princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a fierce dragon. Setting off with his faithful companion, Donkey, Shrek begins the journey of a lifetime filled with adventure, romance, and hilarity.

Community
Every human being, everywhere, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Everyone, without exception, inherently has the right to life, liberty and security. The right to freedom, not just from injustice, but from fear and want. The right to standards of good behavior by governments, including protection under the rule of law and the establishment of citizenship rights, including the right to vote, nationality, cultural expression and participation in public life. Freedom of assembly and expression, from rallies to social media. Equality. Education. Health. The right to food, clean water and shelter. The right to work and provide for ourselves, to own property, to practice our culture and religion, to speak our language, to live in peace, and to be free from harm. The principles of all human rights are infused throughout the work of the United Nations. From the original UN Charter in 1945, to the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, to legally-binding treaties that protect vulnerable groups such as women, children, minorities and the disabled, the UN has established, and continues to enhance and defend, international standards for human rights. No matter where you live in the world, who your parents are, what your background is, or what kind of government you have, human rights are your rights. They allow you to fully develop your human abilities and contribute to the world. When one person’s rights are abused, we are all diminished. It is our collective responsibility to advance and speak up for human rights, to expose wrongdoing, and to protect the most vulnerable. And everyone has – you have! – that power.
WINTERFEST WAVE
You can be a human rights champion. Join our movement of “We the Peoples” and help us to promote equality and justice, and to build hopeful futures. A better world starts with YOU.
Miss BC Ambassador Rachael TeBulte waves to the crowd from a parade float during Castlegar’s Winterfest celebrations.

Roll on Columbia opens at Touchstones BILL METC ALFE West Kootenay Advertiser
Eileen Pearkes is the curator of the award-winning exhibit Roll On Columbia, on display at Touchstones Nelson. At the opening of the exhibit this month, Pearkes welcomed Virgil Seymour, the Arrow Lakes facilitator for the Sinixt people in Colville, Wash. “I am up here trying to right some of the wrongs that I feel have been done to
my people,”Seymour told the Advertiser. “We are not looking for a lot, but we care a lot about our ancestors’ bones, our sacred places, and the resources that are being used up here andhow well they are being used.” Speaking about the exhibit, Pearkes said: “In this fast-paced world, history has ever-increasing value as a source of wisdom and reflection. History prompts us to think aboutwhere we have
been so that we can move forward in a thoughtful way. In the 1950s and ‘60s, when governments designed and executed the Columbia River Treaty, the focuswas on the future. The cultural and ecological changes happened fast, without much reflection about, or consideration of, the local perspective. Only with hindsight did the far-reaching magnitude of the decisions become clear.”

One hundred twenty-third in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Mineral City, six or seven miles up Cariboo Creek from Burton was concocted by Rossland interests and first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of May 30, 1896: “Engineers are at work laying out the townsite at Mineral City. The hotel on the new townsite is nearly completed.” However, the townsite plan, credited to surveyor Joseph Frederick Ritchie, is dated May 22, 1897 and was deposited with the land registry on July 17, 1897. The streets were Lincoln, St. Paul, Anderson, Union, Phoenix, Princess, Spokane, Cooke, and Johnson (many of which are also streets in Rossland) and the avenues Madden, Columbia, Nelson, and Victoria. (The Madden family ran the hotel.) The town took its name from Mineral Creek, first mentioned in The Ledge of Aug. 2, 1894. The Victoria Daily Colonist reported on June

Above: The Minton general store advertised in the Cascade Record of Dec. 17, 1898. Below: The Minton general store advertised in the Cascade Record of Dec. 17, 1898. 4, 1897: “The Mineral City Townsite Co. is the only joint stock company formed this week. It has its head offices in Rossland and capital stock of $21,600.” Two days later the paper added: “Townsites in Cariboo Creek district are also beginning to boom. Mineral City and Cariboo City have been put on the market lately and lots in both are meeting with ready sale in Rossland.” According to Our Days Before Yesterday, “The site of Mineral City is on the bank of Mineral Creek about half a mile from its confluence with Caribou Creek and was staked by Jack Fyfe, who was engineer on the SS Kootenay and who had the backing of the Bank of Montreal at Rossland …” Mineral City was home to a short-lived monthly newspaper, the Mineral City News, edited by Alfred W. Dwyer at Rossland. It might have only lasted one issue — no copies are known to survive. While Mineral City came to naught, mining engineer H. Bush claimed in the Nelson Tribune of May 7, 1898 that “The most important city in this district will be Mineral City … It is an ideal townsite, lying in a beautiful valley, and is in close proximity to all the principal mines. A good hotel has been built and arrangements are being made for a tri-weekly mail service to this point from Burton City.” The Arrow Lakes News of July 12, 1934 noted: “Mineral City is a name on the old maps and the stakes of the town plotters may still be seen. Of late years it has chiefly been noted for its huckleberries.” Possibly the last use of the name appeared in the Arrow Lakes News of Aug. 13, 1936: A party of berry pickers motored to Mineral City Sunday.” MINTON This obscure townsite, platted to capitalize on the construction of the Columbia and Western Railway, was first mentioned in the Brooklyn News of Oct. 8, 1898: “The youngest town in the Boundary country is Minton, at the foot of Christina lake, near Cascade City. It was named after the new governor general of Canada.” Sir Gilbert John Murray Kynynmond Elliot, 4th Earl of Minto (1845-1914) served was governor general 1898 to 1904. The SS Minto, which plied the Arrow Lakes for over 50 years, was also named after him. E.C. Eckstrom opened a hotel at Minton called the Travellers’ Inn and the BC Mercantile and Mining Syndicate Ltd. had a general store there. Minton didn’t last long. The Cascade Record of Aug. 26, 1899 described it as being in a “semimoribund state.” In 1902, the Christina Lake Mill Co. erected a sawmill on the townsite.

Grant helps out Special Olympics-Trail JIM BAILEY West Kootenay Advertiser
The Special Olympic BC-Trail’s (SOBCTrail) Snow Sport Winter Festival is getting financial boost courtesy of the B.C. government. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Peter Fassbender announced that a wide range of sporting events will benefit from over $175,000 in provincial grants. SOBC-Trail will receive just over $2,400 of the funds as they get set to host the SOBC Winter Festival from Feb. 5-7. The annual event features Special Olympic athletes from across B.C. competing in downhill skiing and snowshoeing events, which will make its first visit
to Red Mountain and Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club this year. “It’s Winter Fest and we’re bringing in the top Special Olympic alpine skiers and snowshoers in the province,” said SOBCTrail organizer and coach Ben Postmus. “We went over there two years ago to Crystal Mountain to scope it out to see if we could host it, and it was a no brainer. I mean Red Mountain is famous for its races.” SOBC-Trail has recruited the assistance of the Red Mountain Racers and Black Jack skiers to help in the organization and timing of the races that will see close to 140 athletes, coaches, and support staff visit Rossland for the three-day event. “It’s a good warm up for all the athletes that are going to the Special Olympic

Canada Winter Games in Newfoundland in March,” added Postmus. Since 2004, Hosting BC has invested more than $5 million in community-based sporting events, building B.C.’s reputation as a major sport-hosting destination. Event hosting stimulates economic activity and generates revenues that help support local businesses and jobs in B.C.’s local communities. “The Hosting BC grant program encourages communities to host tournaments and championships that provide a positive boost to the economy and help train volunteers for future events,” said Fassbender. “These organizations also do a great job of showcasing our B.C. athletes at home and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for all residents.”
