Hugs: A big hug to the person who found my family ring in the Urban Roots parking lot and turned it in. I was heart broken that I had lost it and didn’t know if I would ever get it back. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you!! Hugs: I would like to send a hug to the person that used their quad to plow a safe walkway on the green space along 3rd Avenue S. It is greatly appreciated! Hugs: To all the hard working staff and students that put on a FANTASTIC fundraiser (for the school in Nepal) at Gordon Terrace this week! Not only were the staff & students incredibly welcoming but they were very well informed on the products they were selling. You could see the enthusiasm they had for their cause and it was heart warming to see such passionate little activists! Well done Gordon Terrace, you should be very proud! Hugs: To the Home Depot for encouraging their employees to interact with and offer advice to customers. Makes the DIY project a lot easier when the sales person not only helps find the items you need but also has some knowledge of their use. Kudos! Hugs: Big hugs to Katie

VIEWS Opinion: We can handle e-petitions by Brian Coombs Ancient Greeks practised a type of pure democracy. Every citizen had the right and responsibility to vote on matters that were both pressing and trivial. Of course, being a citizen meant that you were a property-owning male, which meant about 80 per cent of the population had no say whatsoever. That said, something has just happened here in Canada that is very cool, democratically speaking, that is. We are now able to send online petitions to Ottawa. These petitions will need initial support of 5 names and an MP as a sponsor. If the petition reaches 500 names, government will have to give a response within 45 days after the petition has been tabled. The legislation came about from the work of Burnaby-Douglas New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart, who originally tabled the idea in 2011. The motion passed (142 to 140) way back in January of 2014 — and included eight Conservative MPs who went against party discipline to vote for the motion — but it just came into actual being this December 4. Before this, you could get parliament to hear
your paper petition provided it had a mere 25 names. The idea behind having to get 500 names on the e-petition and to have an MP sponsor is to weed out the frivolous demands. But petitions are nothing new, so why is the new ability to create online petitions that our government will listen to a big deal? First off, unless the way we vote in Canada changes drastically, (as promised by the federal Liberal Party), a political party can run this country with less than a third of the votes cast. Then of course, there is the problem with elected MPs touting the party line and voting in lockstep regardless of what their constituents want. And there is the legislation that gets passed that clearly only benefits a very small portion of the population to the disadvantage of the majority. What makes this such a big deal is that it reminds us that while technology can be a bothering distraction, it can also be a force for good. Now, with relative ease, Canadians can start a petition and if enough signatures are there, it will force some action from the government. Of course someone

will start a petition, and get the required amount of names and sponsor, for the government to build a Death Star. The correct action from the government would be to start building one immediately, without delay. Just kidding — there are always delays with government work. But yes, there will be frivolous petitions. There has always been the lunatic fringe and jokers. And while the government does not have to enact legislation based on any petition, imagine the penalty a government would pay, politically, for ignoring a petition that had millions of signatures? As an example, the author of the bill, Stewart, suggested that if 2 million people signed a petition for interestfree student loans, then the government would at least have to study that petition in committee. We live in an era where a cute enough cat video can ‘go viral’ and get millions of views. Imagine if a petition idea felt so right that it went viral as well? It is another step towards the common people having a real say in a true democracy. We are a rich country filled with an incredibly diverse and intelligent citizenry. We are ready for this.

COTR signs agreements with UVic

College of the Rockies Vice-President Academic & Applied Research Stan Chung and Dr. Catherine Mateer from UVic sign two new partnership agreements as (l-r) Dean of Instruction Heather Hepworth, Dean of Instruction Darrell Bethune, Director of Student Affairs Doris Silva and Dean of Instruction Jack Moes look on. Officials from College of the Rockies and the University of Victoria have signed two new partnership agreements for guaranteed admission to a broad range of UVic degree programs. The new dual admission and guaranteed admission agreements will greatly expand educational opportunities for local students. College of the Rockies students will have access to a host of new degree pathways, while remaining home for the first two years – providing significant cost savings over the course of a four-year degree. Through the dual admission agreement, eligible high school students can apply for dual admission to both College of the Rockies and the University of Victoria with one application package. Students accepted for dual admission are guaranteed a seat in select degree programs at UVic after two years of study at the College with satisfactory grades. The guaranteed admission agreement provides guaranteed UVic admission to students who have already begun their studies at College of the Rockies. Under the guaranteed admission agreement, eligible College students with acceptable grades are guaranteed a seat in selected UVic Bachelor degree programs. Eligible College of the Rockies programs include Fine Arts, PreEducation, University Arts and University Science. Most UVic Bachelor degree programs in science, the humanities and social science are included in the agreements. Pre-education students at the College
transfer to the UVic/ East Kootenay Teacher Education program, held at the Cranbrook main campus, after completing 10 courses. College of the Rockies VicePresident, Academic and Applied Research, Stan Chung notes, “Students who take advantage of these new agreements will not only have a guaranteed spot in their degree program but will have access to co-op program opportunities, academic advising and scholarships from both institutions. In addition, students from the East Kootenay region, who remain at home during their first two years, can see a savings of at least $20,000 - $25,000 over those who complete their entire four years at a university.” “At College of the Rockies, we recognize
that each student has their own path to follow when pursuing post-secondary education, and we are committed to creating new opportunities for students in the East Kootenay region to reach their goals,” adds College President and CEO David Walls. “We have seen that students who start their postsecondary education at the College before moving on to university to complete a degree have a very high rate of success. These new agreements give our students additional options to continue to succeed.” In May 2015 the British Columbia Council on Admission and Transfer (BCCAT) reported on transfer student success among BC post-secondary institutions. The report found that College of the Rockies transfer students excel after transfer to a new institution, graduating with among the highest grade-point-averages (GPA) in the province for transfer students. Further, 85 percent of College of the Rockies transfer students completed their degree – the highest completion rate of transfer students from any BC institution. For Dr. Catherine Mateer, Associate VicePresident for Academic Planning at UVic, the new agreements are a perfect fit with student needs. “The University of Victoria
is delighted to build on its longstanding partnerships with College of the Rockies in developing new innovative admission agreements that provide more accessible degree pathways for students in Southeastern BC. In our experience, BC college trained students are wellprepared to succeed when they arrive at UVic. Starting postsecondary education at the College allows students to live at home and work toward their goals while saving money. When they begin their studies at UVic, they know what they want to study and have the confidence to do well. It’s our pleasure to work together to put more university degrees within reach of BC students.” UVic is a national and international leader in post-secondary education and an institution of choice for students from around the globe. In 2013, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed UVic first in Canada and number 20 globally among universities less than 50 years old. donations stay in the community where they are raised to help those most in need. Our annual funding process starts with the Investment Committee of six, made up of a United Way Director, past Board Directors and community representatives who carefully review and assess all funding applications. The Committee sets priorities within United Ways focus areas and sets a recommended annual investment amount for each approved funding applicant. Committee recommendations are then submitted to the Board of Directors who considers the recommendations and generally approves the investments for the year. As funding recipients are often unable to access other funding sources for some of their programs and services, United Way fills an important role in meeting the needs of the community. The needs are great and that is why your donation big or small, is so important. Our annual campaign remains open until the end of February and your help is needed. A troubled economy, rising costs and fewer employment opportunities continue to increase the need for a helping hand up. Please consider making a donation in support of your community and fellow citizens through United Way.
