Rally held for victim of murder Accused killer’s court date adjourned Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Just hours after the man accused of killing Eleanor (Ele) Anthonysz and the attempted murder of her two children appeared in Supreme Court in Chilliwack, family members of the slain women and other activists gathered outside the courthouse to call for an end to family violence. Walter Joseph Ramsay is accused of killing Anthonysz, his ex-girlfriend, and trying to kill her 11-year-old daughter and eightyear-old son by setting their Hatzic-area mobile home on fire in April. Ramsay also faces one count of arson. Ramsay was scheduled to enter a guilty plea and appear for sentencing Friday, but the appearance was adjourned after just a couple minutes. “Some issues have arisen with respect to the basis for the plea and some other matters that we have not been able to resolve prior to this date,” Ramsay’s lawyer, Paul McMurray, told the court Friday morning. A date for a future court appearance will be set on Dec. 14. Later in the afternoon, Anthonysz’s family and community members rallied outside the courthouse. “When you witness violence or abuse, or other behaviour that damages women, if you accept it, your silence is a form of consent,” Lori Maginnis told the crowd. “While we have come far, we still have a long way to go. we are at this rally to give our support to Ele’s mom and her children.” It was also noted that two days later, on Sunday, Dec. 6, Canada would mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on

Roundabout proposal rejected Third option to be examined to solve congestion on Cedar Street Kevin Mills Mission Record
There will not be a roundabout constructed on Cedar Street and 7th Ave. anytime soon. Mission council has rejected the concept after examining the proposal in more detail. Staff had previously recommended a proposal to widen Cedar Street at 7th Ave. to allow for two lanes in each direction and a left turn lane. However, Mayor Randy Hawes asked staff to bring back a proposal, rejected by the previous council, for a roundabout in the area.
He said he had never seen the proposal before and thought council should examine every option. “When you look at the drawings, you see that it can’t work, said Hawes. Council is not moving forward with the original proposal yet. The widening of Cedar Street to four lanes each way would force council to expropriate land, which has caused some serious concerns for property owners in the area. “Four million dollars to expropriate property from people who don’t want to
be expropriated is a pretty tough thing to have to do, said Hawes. Instead, a third option is going to be explored. Hawes suggested a study be performed, at a maximum cost of $20,000, to see if eliminating left turn access onto 7th, from Cedar, in both directions, would solve the congestion problems. He said it would allow for more “straight through flow. He also suggested eliminating truck traffic from Cedar. Council will make a final decision after examining the new study.

Supporters call for an end to violence From A1
Violence Against Women, which marks, in part, the shooting deaths of 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de MontrĂŠal. Teresa Bridge, Anthonysz’s aunt and the organizer of Friday’s rally, noted that more than 130 women had been killed this year in Canada, including more than a dozen between the time the rally was announced, and when it was held. Among those present at the rally were members of the Bikers Against Child Abuse, a group that provides support to young victims of crime. Bridge said the group had been “amazing,â€? and had recently adopted Anthonysz’s children into their chapter and given them their own vests and dog tags. “They are incredible,â€? she said. - with files from Sam Bates/Black Press

Members of the Mission Sunrise Rotary Club are hoping to meet with council and discuss the fate of the observatory project at Fraser River Heritage Park. Janet Chalmers, president of the club, spoke to council on Monday night. She questioned why the district is treating the observatory building differently than other building projects in the park. “The District of Mission has taken over the completion of the Clayburn Building and the Blackberry Kitchen without altering the purpose of those buildings. The question needs to be asked why is the Rotary building only going to proceed to completion if it is totally repurposed and the observatory taken out of the plan?” she asked. Chalmers said the building was always planned to be a multi-purpose structure and leaving an observatory component makes sense. Members of the Mission Sunrise Rotary Club raised $20,000 toward the project and another $100,000 in funding came from the provincial government. Chalmers said that money was for an observatory. “I know Rotary and certainly the provincial government, never would have contributed to a Continued on A5

Reptile Guy to appeal Building could be shared From A4
14 reptiles and 44 rats confiscated by SPCA Kevin Mills Mission Record
Mike Hopcraft will launch a formal appeal to get his animals back. Hopcraft, better known as “The Reptile Guy” had 14 reptiles and 44 rats seized from his downtown Mission facility last week by the BCSPCA. On Dec. 2, SPCA representatives, the Mission RCMP and a veterinarian inspected the First Avenue facility and confiscated the animals. A few days after the incident, Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer at the BCSPCA, said the confiscated animals were suffering from various ailments including dehydration, lack of access to water, lack of UV lighting, inadequate space, and untreated medical conditions. Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BCSPCA, said the agency was responding to complaints received regarding the facility. Chortyk said this was the fourth time the SPCA has gone to the Mission location regarding concerns for the animals. She said rescue centres still have to keep up a certain level of care. “When you take in an animal, then you are required to provide the proper care for them, whether that be shelter or the nutrition or the veterinary care.” While the SPCA has great admiration for rescue groups, Chortyk
A BCSPCA representative walks into the Reptile Guy’s facility on SUBMITTED PHOTO Dec. 2. said, “To move an animal from a bad situation to another bad situation, even with the best of intentions, is not good for that animal.” She added it’s not a raid in a punishment sense, but rather it’s that these animals are in distress. Hopcraft said allegations of mistreatment are not true. “They (SPCA) come in and say that they are finding water (bowls) that aren’t done, or enclosures without food, and enclosures without adequate UV lighting. What they’re not saying is that for the UV lighting, we are supplementing with a vitamin powder,” said Hopcraft. He said many adult animals don’t need UV lighting as long as they are getting some kind of
supplementation. “They (SPCA) go through and see a bearded dragon that doesn’t have a water dish but they don’t comment on the big salad that’s there. And that’s where bearded dragons get their moisture from – it’s from the salad. They very rarely drink from a dish.” He said there are more than 300 animals in the facility and the latest inspection, which occurred at 10:30 a.m., found five empty water dishes. Those would have been filled had the SPCA inspection not halted staff from performing daily routines. He also noted that reptiles are different from cats and dogs. “We are talking about animals that might have a drink of water once every couple of days.” He admitted that one chameleon in his care was dehydrated, but it was in poor condition when it was brought in, and has been rehabbing for months. Hopcraft has 14 days in which to launch his appeal. Chortyk explained that whenever an animal is seized, the owner has a two-week period to submit reasons why it should be returned. A third party is brought in to make a decision. The SPCA’s investigation is ongoing, but so far, no charges against Hopcraft have been recommended. Chortyk said it is too early in the investigation to determine if there is enough evidence to take to Crown counsel.
meeting room in the park or an area to hold receptions and banquets.” In July of 2015, Rotary asked council for its $20,000 to be returned if the observatory was being cancelled. At the time, Mayor Randy Hawes indicated that he would support that request. However, during Monday’s meeting, Hawes said he may have misspoken, noting that the district never received the $20,000, rather the Mission Heritage Association was the recipient. Chalmers continued to push for public consultation on the building. “We are asking that, if the interest of the community is there, that we find a way to make this a shared use building and restore part of it to be the Rotary observatory and science centre.” Local businessman and Rotary
Janet Chalmers, president of the Mission Sunrise Rotary Club, spoke to council on Monday night about the canceled observatory project. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO member Wyatt Scott also spoke to council, asking for “a little area” in the building where people could set up telescopes. “Can we look at downsizing the project where it is something that is going to be manageable?” Council received the delegation.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Trying to avoid all that holiday stress The holiday season can be a time of good cheer, with excitement over gift giving and spending time with family, the joy of attending seasonal events and the wonder of viewing colourfully decorated homes and public areas. But not everyone has a rosy impression of the season. Many things can leave one feeling added stress, and at worst, depression. Worries over money are common. Many of us place a lot of pressure on ourselves to find the right gifts for people, or feel like we’ve spent enough. Others worry that they simply won’t have enough to buy gifts for children or others. In traditional and blended families, the pull can be strong to try pleasing everyone and scheduling a gathering

time that works for all, regardless of how unrealistic it may be. For people who lost a loved one during the year and are facing the first Christmas without them, grief can take a heavy toll. The problem is, many people hide those emotions. Often friends and family members have no idea how much mental pain an individual is dealing with. People are reminded to acknowledge their feelings, whether those are sadness, anxiety, being overwhelmed, or others. Reaching out to friends or family members, maybe going out for coffee or lunch to talk things over, can be a good way to avoid feeling isolated or to prevent resentment from brewing inside. - Black Press

Business not as usual on B.C. farmland Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick has released the latest update to the B.C. Liberal government’s “strategic growth plan” for farm and food products. After reporting a record $12.3 billion in total agriculture and agri-food sales in B.C. for 2014, the latest plan sets a new goal of increasing it to $15 billion by 2020. It’s a mostly a status quo plan, continuing current marketing efforts and encouraging higher-value production of a wider range of products. The ministry intends to hire its first expert in food and beverage production. It’s a reflection of the fact that fully 70 per cent of that $12.3 billion comes from food and beverage processing. This continues the government’s push to improve economic viability of farms by allowing more food product manufacturing and sales on Agricultural Land Reserve property. Letnick says another key strategy is to improve access to irrigation. B.C. has
20,000 farm operations, a number that’s holding steady even as the average age of farmers increases. Opposition MLAs formed their own agriculture committee to tour the province over the past year, chaired by NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham and independent Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. Their report speaks to some of the issues not discussed by the government. One of those is foreign purchase of farmland, a matter subject to regulation in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba but not B.C. Properties have also been purchased to grow hay for export to Asia, and Huntington says she continues to hear of costly farmland in Delta and Surrey being bought at prices long-established farm families can’t afford. We’ve seen a British food and drug conglomerate buy up B.C. Interior farms to plant trees for carbon offsets, a project that was wound down after local protests. Popham and Huntington are calling for a systematic inventory of foreign purchases, to determine if regulation is needed here as climate change shifts growing patterns. Popham argues that with California en-
during years of drought, B.C. can’t continue to depend on imports for more than half its food. “We have countries that are actively seeking food producing land, because their countries are having difficulties producing under drought conditions,” Popham said. “So before we know it, our farmland could
Before we know it, our farmland could be bought up by other countries that are actively and smartly trying to ensure their own food security.”
be bought up by other countries that are actively and smartly trying to ensure their own food security.” Neither Letnick nor the opposition MLAs could produce results from the government’s decision to split the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones, with more latitude for non-farm activities outside the southwest and Okanagan. But we’re starting to see signs of the
new system of regional Agricultural Land Commission panels working with local governments. The Langley Times reports that the Township of Langley quietly signed a deal with the ALC in July to allow development of farmland near the Aldergrove border crossing and Langley airport. The agreement says there is a need for a “defensible and durable urban/ALR edge.” If you think everyone loves farming, you’ve likely never lived on this “urban/ ALR edge.” The latest example is on Vancouver Island, where urban neighbours are protesting an established farmer’s decision to clear a forested property for hay growing. The farmer has been forced to erect a chain-link fence to keep out trespassers who have decided the property is a park that they can use when they like. The mayors of Saanich and View Royal seem more concerned with appeasing urban complainers than protecting the right to farm. They are being pressed to buy up idle ALR land to soothe urban voters repelled by logging and farming. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Organizers are calling it the biggest parade on record as thousands of people lined the street to watch more than 75 floats – not to mention fire trucks, police, search and rescue and other participants – as they slowly worked their way through downtown Mission. “We were well over 100 total vehicles,” said Kristin Parsons, executive director of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. As part of the festivities, food and cash donations were accepted from the public. ““We collected 800 pounds of food for the Christmas Bureau and close to $1,000 in cash donations,” said Parsons who called it the “best yet.” She said more and more new businesses are throwing their support behind the parade. “The whole point of this parade is a chance for the business community to say thank you to the community itself for supporting them year round.”

Pendant draw to benefit Stone Soup If you haven’t purchased your raffle ticket for a chance to win a $4,000 pendant, then time is running out. The fundraising campaign is sponsored by Lanka Jewels and proceeds will go to the Stone Soup Initiative to help battle homelessness. The pendant is a literal soup bowl of gorgeous stones and the draw is set for Dec. 23. Tickets for the draw are $20. “Sales are pretty steady right now, but there’s only 13 or 14 days left,” said Ken Selvaraja, owner of Lanka Jewels. So far the campaign has raised between $8,500 and $9,000. However, the goal is to reach the $20,000 mark. I think it’s time to get the corporate community involved,” said Selvaraja. He said most ticket buyers are random, generous members of the public, but he’d like to see more business profes-
sionals step up. That’s why he’s decided to make buying tickets easier. Selvaraja said from now on, Lanka Jewels will be accepting ticket purchases over the phone, rather than in person.
“If they want to buy tickets – a block of tickets, book of five, book of 10 or even one – they can phone and give us their order and we will put it through on their credit card.” Lanka’s number is 604-826-5766. The Stone Soup Initiative draws its inspiration from the old tale that tells the story of how something great for everyone can be created if we all just contribute a little bit. In Mission, government, citizens, businesses and community groups have been inspired by the story, and are acting in concert to enact 35 different community actions meant to reduce homelessness. The SSI is overseen by a committee of community leaders, including Bob Ingram, Judith Ray, Sanjay Gulati and Kirsten Hargreaves.

ANNOUNCEMENT Dr. Somani recently took over Dr. Anthony Podrow’s practice in the Mission Medical Building on Hurd Street and she’s both truly honored and excited to be working in Mission. After all, she grew up right here in Mission! Dr. Somani completed her Bachelor of Science at McGill University in Montreal. In 2006, she earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Following dental school, she completed a Residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York to further her skill in various disciplines of dentistry.
More than a dozen people came out to a rally in Deroche on Saturday. The rally was a show of support for Bob Woolsey and Dawn Parker, managers of the BC Pain Society’s Medical Cannabis Compassion Club that was raided by Mission RCMP last week. Woolsey said he plans to re-open his club and continue to help people who need BOB FRIESEN PHOTO medical marijuana. No charges have been filed at this time.
She’s committed to clinical excellence and is continually enhancing her expertise through continuing education courses in various areas including implants, cosmetics, and Invisalign. It’s a Wonderful Life The Canadian premier of a new musical telling of the popular Christmas story, It’s a Wonderful Life, is being presented at Theatre in the Country in Whonnock. The story opens on Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls, where the guardian angel, Clarence, is assigned to convince the desperate George Bailey not to commit suicide. George is a good man, who sacrificed his dreams and his youth on behalf of the citizens of his small town. He inherited the loan business of his father and he gave up travelling the world and joining university as scheduled. Later he resisted the proposals of the evil banker Mr. Potter. George married his beloved Mary Hatch and had four children with
her and a tough life with his family. When his uncle Billy loses $8,000, which is found and stolen by Mr. Potter, George decides to commit suicide. Clarence decides to show the life in town if George had never existed. George concludes that life is wonderful. Theatre in the Country has taken over the former Whonnock elementary school on 272nd Street and 100th Avenue, halfway between downtown Mission and downtown Maple Ridge. It’s a Wonderful Life is on now and runs until Dec. 20 with both dinner tickets and show-only tickets still available. For more information, call 604259-9737 or visit theatreinthecountry.com.

Mission duo help UBC win Vanier Cup Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
A pair of Mission football products are now national champions. Defensive back Kevin Wiens and linebacker Evan Horton were both part of the UBC Thunderbirds historic 26-23 Vanier Cup win over the Montreal Carabins in Quebec City on Nov. 28. UBC won the biggest prize in CIS football with a last-second field goal kick. The last time UBC won the Vanier Cup was 1997. Wiens is a third-year, and Horton is a first-year and both are graduates of Mission Secondary School. Wiens recorded five tackles and broke up one pass in the title
game, with Horton picking up one assisted tackle. “We make it tough on ourselves, but that’s what you expect from a young team. This group of guys was not even picked to make the playoffs in Canada West this year,” said UBC head coach Blake Nill. “What they have done is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen. This team has stood up to the best the country can offer and they have come out in front every time.” The win completes a Cinderella story, after the club finished last in the Canada West conference with two wins and six losses in 2014. It’s also less than two years removed from a UBC sports targeting review, where the future of the football program was in doubt.

Roadrunners fall in B.C. final
THE FASTEST GROWING AUTOMOTIVE BRAND IN on full-line brands, on 12 month, CANADA Based year over year rolling unit sales
Mission’s comeback attempt just ran short on time Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
A late push just wasn’t quite enough for the Mission Roadrunners in the AA junior varsity championship game at BC Place on Saturday. The Roadrunners fell 27-21 to North Vancouver’s Windsor Dukes, and time simply ran out on Mission’s championship dreams. Mission trailed 21-7 in the fourth quarter, but with 5:08 left quarterback Hamen Gill connected with tight end Dhivaan Bhogal to draw
To me, this shows amazing work on the part of the players. Kevin Watrin within one score. The Dukes quickly responded to go up 27-14, but with 1:18 left Bhogal scored again to make it 27-21. That, however, would be as close as Mission would get. Running back John Guitard scored the Roadrunners’ other
touchdown. The setback ends a successful season for the Roadrunners, who finished with a record of six wins and one loss in regular season play. Mission then beat South Kamloops 42-7 on Nov. 12, Duchess Park 52-12 on Nov. 20 and Ballenas 14-6 on Nov. 26 in playoff games to advance to Saturday’s final. Mission head coach Kevin Watrin pointed out that the team only won one combined game in Grade 8 and 9, so the turnaround has been remarkable. “To me, this shows amazing
work on the part of these players, both in the off-season and during this season,” he said. “These boys want to win. They are developing a great work ethic and love for the game.” Watrin said he expects continued success in the future with this group. “These are some very special boys, several are younger brothers of former players,” he said. “Our alumni are becoming more involved with this team. We are so very proud of all the boys, coaches and parents who have made this program what it is.”

Mission Niners head coach Dave Hicks practised kicking converts for a reason – and all the tedious training finally paid off on Saturday. One successful two-point kicking convert was the difference in the Valley Community Football League Championship junior bantam final, as the Niners edged Cloverdale 8-6 in Langley. “The guys would always ask me why we’re doing kicking drills,” Hicks said, laughing. The VCFL title win concludes a special season for the Niners, in which they didn’t lose a single game all year. Mission only allowed one offensive touchdown all season, on Saturday against Cloverdale.

half, Mission finally broke through. Niners running back Kurtis Flynn dashed 80 yards to get Mission deep into the Cloverdale red zone, and quarterback Ethan Anderson called his own number to tie the game up. The successful convert put the Niners up 8-6, and that would prove to be enough to clinch the title win for Mission. “It’s been an absolutely incredible season,” Hicks said. “These kids were focused and dedicated all season long, and it’s been a very special year.” Mission outscored the opposition 317-0 over eight games in the regular season, and also won Langley’s Golden Helmet and Surrey’s Bronze Boot tournament earlier this year. The Niners also shut out the competition in the VCFL semi-final. The Niners played the final without most valuable player Tyson Black, and Hicks said the entire team stepped up in his absence. Fullback Jonathan Milne rushed for over 100 yards to fuel the Mission offence. Defensively, Flynn led the way with over 10 tackles, while Mason Schaufelberger had a pair of quarterback sacks. Anderson and Michael Guitard each grabbed interceptions. For more information on the team’s run, visit vcfl.ca.

Fundraising concert set Annual Christmas at the Clarke takes place Dec. 16 The holiday spirit will fill the air at the Clarke Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 16 as the 16th annual Christmas At The Clarke Benefit Concert is set to begin at 7 p.m. Rob Hess will be back this year to entertain the audience with his fabulous voice and stage presence. Hess will be accompanied by Rosslyn Delmonico. Organizer John Agnew said he expects Hess to put on another great show with wonderful renditions of some of the best Christmas songs ever written. Making their first appearance at the fundraising event are Boilies Goat, two local performers – Jennie Bice and Tony Ivan O’Hara – who formed a dynamic duo, performing music ranging from blues and rock to ballads. As Bice puts it, they “will take the audience on a multi-faceted musical odyssey,” and the organizers are sure that
they will leave the audience wanting more. The band Horizon is performing this year, featuring five talented and entertaining musicians from the Fraser Valley: Rick Noel, Fred Schmidt, Asger Hansen, Johan Worst and Warren Grosland. Featuring Crystal Hicks, Dana Wright and Chantelle Davidson, along with special guest Bruce Banman, Horizon performs a wide range of favorite Christmas songs. The group performs music for every taste, old Christmas favourites, blues, jazz, rock and roll, and country. Also on hand to perform is the Celtic band 1066. These talented entertainers are a favourite at the event every time they perform and in minutes have had audiences laughing, clapping and singing along. Agnew advises people to get their tickets early. Proceeds from the
concert go towards helping two community organizations: the Christmas Bureau, and the shelter programs operated by the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley. Doors open at 6 p.m. to allow people to drop off donations for the food bank, and seating begins at 6:30 p.m. The Heritage Park Middle School choir will be performing in the lobby before the show and a silent auction will also be held. Tickets are $18 for

Christmas: the best time to support those that build our community Mission businesses have always been known for their close ties to our community, and this Christmas season is no different. It is well known that in any small community, it is a core group of volunteers who do the bulk of the work and many don’t have just one organization that they support. The Mission Chamber of Commerce works hard year round to encourage our community to shop and support local business

and to bring opportunities to our businesses to give back and show our community spirit. Our Annual Candlelight Parade is a great example as it is strongly supported by the business community and is their way of thanking the Mission residents for the support of their businesses year round. The recent record crowds who came out to
for our 32nd Annual Candlelight Parade, is just an example of the success of this popular event and excitement that our local businesses bring to the Mission residents. In addition, we have seen a lot of great work being done this year by local organizations to support our youth, our less fortunate and our business community. Examples of this can be found all over our community. Just take a moment to visit our new “MY House” at Community services to see the impact this project has made to the Youth in the community that don’t have a place to go. Take a stroll downtown to see all the new businesses coming in to call Mission home and help to bring more people into the downtown core. Or spend time at the Welton Stairs where families have come together to clean-up the space and make it a safe gathering place for everyone. All of these programs/ services were made possible with the support of our local business community. You may have heard about the Stone Soup Initiative. Ken Selvaraja at Lanka Jewels joined this initiative with great support by designing and donating a beautiful piece of jewelry valued at over $4,000 to raffle off to raise money to help reduce homelessness in Mission. It’s is a simple idea, a movement drawing on Mission’s culture of neighborliness. “Like
that ancient story, we recognize that something greater - something enriching - is created when we all give a little. Our aim is to inspire you to give what you can to help our community be better tomorrow than it is today,” explains Paul Horn, Stone Soup fundraising organizer. The Mission Chamber is proud to support this initiative and is currently selling tickets for the Stone Soup fundraiser, set to be drawn on Dec 23, 2015. The staff at Vancity Savings, are busy collecting warm coats and clothing for the Home Life Realty realtors care warmth drive, holding collection drives to help bring essential items to the “My House” youth home, and collecting food donations for
the Mission Christmas Bureau. “We have a very passionate and unique group here at the Mission Vancity. We are always looking for ways we can contribute to our wonderful community,” says Jennifer McGrath, Community Engagement with Vancity Savings. Envision Financial, Prospera Credit Union, Aldergrove Credit Union and Vancity are proudly sponsoring the Christmas at the Clarke Benefit Concert on Wednesday December 16,2015. All proceeds from this event will go to support; Mission Community Services, the Christmas Bureau, and the shelter programs operated by the Women’s Resource Society. December is a great time for reflection and with that in mind; I would like to thank all those volunteers involved in the many Chamber of Commerce events over the past year, from the luncheons, Business Excellence, the Golf Tournament, the All Candidates Meeting and the recent Christmas Parade, we couldn’t have don’t it without your valued support. We are so thankful for all those who pay it forward through the big or little things that they do throughout our community. We have many home-based and small businesses that continue to grow and thrive because our community believes in SHOPPING LOCAL. And finally thanks to those organizations that volunteer their time and resources to assist people that are not as fortunate, it certainly shows in our community how much we care. Next year will be a busy year for the Chamber as we have many new initiatives to offer our members including our new China Trip in October 2016. The information night for this trip will be held on January 18th, 2016 at the Chamber offices, so please plan to attend to get all the details on this exciting guided holiday. This opportunity is not just for Chamber members as we have opened it up to the general public. Book your spot today! Finally I think we would all agree that Mission is a great community to live, work and play. If we could all focus our energies on supporting the local economy during this holiday season, we could make a real difference to the businesses that make Mission unique and the programs and services that they support!

Vancity Savings Credit Union in Mission makes a big bang every day. That’s why it received the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce 2015 Big Bang Award for Business Excellence. Vancity maintains a strong presence in the community with its financial and charitable programs that create opportunities throughout Mission City and surrounding areas. “We are proud of our commitment to Mission,” said Grace Saris, branch manager in Mission. “And we work hard to make sure everything we do both contributes to the local economy and strengthens the local social fabric.” Vancity supports numerous local non-profit organizations (NPOs), including Mission Community Services Society’s Christmas Bureau, Women’s Resource Society and Haven in the Hollow. In addition, Vancity takes its financial literacy responsibility seriously. It has developed and delivered a number of workshops and seminars aimed to help people learn about their money. Called Each One Teach One, these financial literacy programs cover topics that include basic banking and budgeting; RSPs, TFSAs and taxes; estates, mortgages and investments; and fraud prevention. “We host the workshops and seminars in our Community Room at the branch,” explained Saris, “And sometimes we take them to organizations such as Mission Friendship Centre, Corrections Canada and Mission’s Lifetime Learning Centre.

Beautiful evening for the Mission Candlelight Parade Friday, December 4th was a clear, warm night, perfect for watching the 32nd Mission Candlelight Parade! It is estimated that over 13,000 spectators were entertained by the marching bands, dance troupes and of course Santa. The VIP Contest winners enjoyed the judge’s stand view with Grab-a-Java & Starbucks hot chocolate and yummy cookies from Save on Foods. Toasty in their red Vancity blankets, they enjoyed the more than 75 floats that participated. The seven judges had a difficult time given the work that so many entries put into their floats and many scores were fractions apart.
2015 Candlelight Parade Winners are:

smoothly thanks to the efficient nine-speed tranny. Curvy stretches were taken in the Coupe’s easy stride straightened out by a crackerjack suspension that fought the natural physical tendency for a projectile to roll very well. Standard is the ‘dynamic select’ drive mode system which alters the throttle, steering and transmission. It switches, via the turn of a knob, easily between the settings ‘comfort,’ sport,’ ‘slippery (yes, you read that right,’ and ‘individual’. The diesel version, kitted with the optional sport package, adds suspension control to the system. The 450 and 63 S trims get the air suspension as standard, and add a ‘sport+’ setting. An ‘intelligent drive’ package adds such safety features as adaptive cruise control with steering assist, blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist. In a cruise control setting, steering assist is activated and that allows the car to drive autonomously for short distances. It gets nervous if you take your hands off the wheel for too long and prompts you to get a grip! As might be expected, the various modes and style of driving will have a varying effect on fuel consumption. As a guide, constant comfort mode us will likely produce a fuel economy of around 10.4/8.2 L/100 km (city/ highway) with the diesel and 13.6/10.2 L/100 km (city/ highway) in the 450. Cabin styling is classy as you would expect. Up front, the seating is comfy and gripping in the turn and operationally it is definitely user friendly. The Coupe’s rakish design does affect the rear passenger room but I suspect it’s more perception that reality in that your head is closer to the roof that traditional boxy sport utes but it’s not bouncing off the roof when jumping the bumps! There’s 650 litres of cargo space, which expands to 1,720 with the rear seats folded. And there’s more enough room in my life to take in Fogo Island again, given half a chance.
