Low loonie BOOSTS PROFIT$ Big difference in dollars brings business benefits With the loonie diving towards depths not seen since the mid-2000s, local businesses selling to American companies and consumers are reaping the rewards.

As cross-border shoppers buy locally and exporters see their revenues increase, the local economy is projected to continue growing over the next two years, boosting property values and drawing more workers, and young people, to the region.

Man airlifted after stabbing on Jackson

A 25-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged in relation to a stabbing that occurred on Sunday afternoon during a family dispute. Abiem Deng Deng was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault and breach of his conditions, which were set after he was charged with sexual assault last month and was released on bail. The 26-year-old stabbing victim remains in stable condition after being airlifted to hospital following the incident at the home in the 1700 block of Jackson Street. Const. Ian MacDonald said the Abbotsford Police Department

received a call at 2:35 p.m. Sunday from someone living in the downstairs portion of the home, saying a family member was trying to come into his residence and he didn’t want him there. MacDonald said the call was then disconnected and, while police were attempting to reconnect with the person, they received a second call reporting that a stabbing had occurred. Police, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance personnel arrived on the scene and located a man suffering from wounds to his chest and neck. He was airlifted to a Vancouver-area trauma centre.

Starling trapping program proposed to reduce cannon use Conflict over loud bird-scare devices prompts alternative Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News

The war between local berry farmers and starlings is escalating, and the city is now suggesting it won’t be won without a few casualties. Many farmers use blasting propane cannons, but they’re just as effective at disturbing neighbours as pesky birds. Now, the city has proposed trapping and killing thousands of young starlings, similar to trapping programs in the Okanagan and in Whatcom County. On Monday, council recommended a partnership with the berry industry in 2016, tied to $30,000 in city funding. Starlings, an introduced pest bird from Europe, have been a scourge to local berry farmers for decades. Huge flocks of the birds, which have often displaced species native to North America, can severely damage

A city staff report says “such a program is not likely to reduce the total number of starlings. However, based on anecdotal evidence, it could likely decrease the number of starlings at certain times of the year, thereby potentially reducing crop damage, and more importantly, potentially reducing the reliance on propane cannons.” As empirical data on the starling population is scarce, some Abbotsford councillors are concerned it will be difficult to judge whether the program is successful. City clerk Bill Flitton suggested that if there is a reduction in the use of propane cannons, that would be a success.

Auto mall food drive raises record amount Campaign collects $60,000 worth of food Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

This year’s Fraser Valley Auto Mall Food Drive set a new record, bringing in 8.8 tons of food with a value of $60,000. The campaign, held over the previous two months, culminated on Saturday in a convoy of vehicles – including from the auto mall, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, and Save-OnFoods – delivering the items to the food bank. The convoy travelled from the auto mall on

Mt. Lehman Road, along South Fraser Way and to the food bank on Essendene Avenue. A cheque of just over $4,900 was then presented to food bank manager Dave Murray on behalf of auxiliary firefighters from five halls. “It’s probably one of the highlights of my Christmas season to see that convoy coming down that hill and come toward the food bank … It speaks volumes about our community and how generous they are,” Murray said.

The B.C. government should immediately put an extra $50 million into the budget of the troubled Ministry of Children and Family Development, and wind down the independent watchdog that highlights the worst cases of young people who die in ministry care. Those are among the recommendations of a review by former deputy minister Bob Plecas, released Monday. Plecas said the ministry needs a fouryear strategic plan to build up resources, starting with hiring 120 additional child protection social workers in the first year and building from there. Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond has issued a string of reports on child protection failures. The most recent one looked at an aboriginal teen named Paige, who died of a drug overdose in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside after 30 child-protection reports and interventions with her alcoholic mother. Another recent case was Alex Gervais, an 18-year-old who fell to his death in September from a fourthfloor hotel room in Abbotsford where

he had been housed by the ministry after his group home was shut down due to poor conditions. There have been 90 deaths so far in the current fiscal year. Turpel-Lafond rejected Plecas’ suggestion that an internal “contrarian” and a ministry spokesperson similar to those employed by police forces would be trusted by the public to identify and report on issues in the ministry. Plecas said privacy rules need to be changed so an all-party committee of MLAs can be briefed on child-death and serious-injury cases, allowing opposition MLAs to provide the oversight and criticism they bring to other ministries of the B.C. government. Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux said she can’t commit to specific financial measures until the provincial budget is presented in February, but she has the support of Premier Christy Clark and the cabinet to increase resources for the ministry. Turpel-Lafond said accumulated cuts and freezes to the ministry budget leave it at least $100 million below what it needs to meet its caseload.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I WEDNESDAY, December 16, 2015

A caveat on starling program starling eradication programs. There undoubtedly will be some who decry such an attack on Mother Nature, pointing out that the birds are not at fault. There is some validity to that argument, but staging a wildly disruptive war of sound in the fields is far more unacceptable, in our view. Trapping and euthanizing several thousand starlings will hardly affect their overall population, but it might relieve some pressure on crops, and in turn, reduce cannon use – or so the city hopes. And that is where we place considerable doubt. Given that many farmers see no issue with disturbing their neighbours, what will motivate them to discontinue cannon use if starling populations decrease somewhat during growing season? Some may see it as the best of both worlds. Unless the city places a caveat on the $30,000 in funding it will supply to the program in the first year – i.e. a commitment from growers to a specific reduction in cannon numbers and use – the intent of this project may fall on deaf ears.

If the City of Abbotsford follows through with a starling trapping program next year, potentially thousands of the birds will meet a premature end. The starling is not indigenous to North America. Like numerous other species, it was introduced either accidentally or with ignorant intention by European settlers. The result has been massive flocks of the birds thriving in this environment, driving out native bird species, and wreaking havoc on berry crops, particularly blueberries. A defensive farming measure that somehow made sense many years ago – loud blasts from a propane-powered cannon – has, in the contemporary interface between agriculture and residential areas, become as invasive as the birds themselves. Hundreds of explosions from multiple cannons across adjoining fields and farms are an auditory blight on the environment. Very unfortunately, successive provincial governments have refused to update antiquated right-to-farm legislation, and ban the devices. Enter other less obstrusive alternatives, such as reflective tape, falcons, drones – and

May celebration of Christmas always be so We live in a small apartment complex and below us is a row of townhouses. At this time of the year it is fascinating to watch day by day as the Christmas lights come on, both in and outside of home after home. Some of the displays are fantastic! All this set me to thinking how appropriate it is that lights galore are a symbol of our Christmas celebrations. That’s how it started back in Bethlehem when the angel appeared to the shepherds. A pitch-black night, then suddenly a blinding light: Wow! No wonder they were afraid! All this is something to celebrate, is it not? For almost 2,000 years already Christians have celebrated the Saviour’s birth and have spread around the world His good news of forgiveness, redemption, life everlasting and the promise of His coming again. May neither the glorious light of the first Christmas night ever be dimmed, nor its good news of great joy ever be muted.

Every holiday has its reason for celebration. I’m sorry, but “Happy Holiday” just doesn’t cut it. Thankfully, in our fair city, political correctness has not yet co-opted the season. We still have Christmas trees, and the strains of “Silent Night” and “Hark the Heralds Angels Sing”are still heard from our homes and in our streets. May it ever be so. Let it be clear that is not our immigrant friends of other faiths who take exception to our celebration of Christmas, nor is it the vast majority of ordinary Canadians, who still consider themselves Christians. No, it is a certain group of intellectual and political elites, secularists all, who seem determined to remove from our culture any public celebration of our Christian heritage. May they never succeed. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! Bert Warden

In a recent CounterAttack program, for the first time in APD history, police did not find drunk drivers, but did find marijuana-impaired drivers. Since marijuana is harder to detect, I would presume there were many drivers who slipped through the cracks. The pro-marijuana lobby tout this dangerous, possibly addictive drug as a benign, almost health-enhancing product. I have heard some comment, “driving after using the product makes you a better driver.” With the move to possibly legalize marijuana, what is it telling our youth? It’s a legal product, so it must be OK. Parents and other adults, please set an example for our youth. What does Health Canada say? Eric Myrholm

UFV students, faculty, and staff are pitching in to support the settlement of Syrian refugees in Canada. The UFV Arab Club, in partnership with other UFV clubs, staged a donation drive benefiting Syrian refugees arriving in Surrey over the next few months and in two short weeks collected enough items to furnish and stock at least two apartments. The club’s efforts stemmed from a desire to take concrete action to help refugees. “We always hear people saying they want to help the refugees, but aren’t sure how to do so,” says UFV Arab Club president Aziz Alfadel. “We decided to take steps and make it happen. “We are very happy with how successful we have been. Many different people came forward to help us, and donors from many backgrounds and many parts of the world shared their own stories with us as they brought in their donations.” The UFV student Arab Club, which consists of students from a variety of backgrounds, collected donations earmarked for Syrian refugees settling in Surrey. The Arab Club delivered a truckload of clothing and household items to the Middle Eastern Friendship Centre in Surrey on Tuesday, Dec 8. UFV provided the truck to transport the items, and the UFV Student Union Society provided storage space for the donations.

Faculty and students from communications, political science, geography, global development studies, Indo-Canadian studies, peace and conflict studies, and media studies participate in a debate on the issue. The forum will address the fact that terrorists do not respect state borders or human rights and individual liberties, and is it simply the west versus the rest? Or can we all unite and defeat terrorism wherever it shows itself? And what is the discussion that gets us there? “With our second provincial location in operating out-patient services, this event provides us the opportunity to celebrate our supporters from around the Fraser Valley and light up the holiday season officially for Canuck Place children and families,” she said. Petra Fellinger, Canuck Place mom to Nicholas Schwuchow, said the hospice has “amazing staff, volunteers and clinical team members.” “We are able to be together as a family without the interruptions of everyday life and also take a little time for ourselves while the kids enjoy all the amenities at this wonderful place. The kids love coming and always have a great time. Canuck Place is truly magical. We are so grateful for their support.” The Schwuchows were scheduled to be in attendance to “flip the switch” at the lighting ceremony but threeyear-old Nicholas was too ill to attend. Instead, Jenna Prem, a teen fundraiser for Canuck Place from Abbotsford and recent Vancouver Canucks “Hammer’s Hero,” was there to light up the holiday tree. Those in attendance at Wednesday’s event included local donors and supporters, Canuck Place families, MLA Simon Gibson, and a number of Abbotsford city councillors. The festive event included performances by local quartet group Four Real and a variety of activities for the kids, including holiday crafting and a visit by Santa.

Thousands warned of property value spike BC Assessment sends out early notification to homeowners Jeff NAGEL Black Press

An unusually high number of Metro Vancouver homeowners are being warned they will get a sharply higher property assessment next month that may trigger an unwelcome property tax increase. BC Assessment says it has sent out 37,000 early notification letters across B.C., with almost two-thirds of them going to Metro Vancouver home owners. That’s significantly more than most years. “Early notification letters are mailed to property owners who can expect an increase of at least 15 per cent above the average increase in their local taxing jurisdiction,” said assessor Jason Grant. “We want to ensure impacted property owners are aware of the significant increases and we welcome them to contact us if they have any questions or concerns.” Increases of 15 to 25 per cent will be typical for single-family detached houses in Vancouver,

the North Shore, Burnaby, Tri Cities, New Westminster, Richmond and Surrey, Grant said. He said typical stra-

ta residential increases will be in the five to 10 per cent range. Examples of the sort of increases coming in the Surrey area in-

clude a 1981 detached house in South Surrey that will see its 2016 assessment climb 10 per cent to $790,000 from $716,000, as

$193,000 in gaming grants Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) is receiving funding for 10 different programs, from the food bank to services for youth and seniors, thanks to a $193,000 grant from the B.C. government. The grant was awarded under the Human and Social Services category of the Community Gaming Grant program, which helps support the work of local agencies and clubs that deliver social services to those facing challenging and difficult situations. Janna Dieleman, manager of donor and community relations at ACS, said the gaming grants allow the agency to continue offering services such as medical transportation for seniors, a health clinic for youth, legal advocacy for immigrant farmworkers, and counselling for families with issues related to their teenaged children. “These gaming grants are critical to the continued health and well-being of the community in which we live,” she said. Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas said ACS provides valuable services to the community. “Thanks to this funding, they will be able to stock up the food bank in time for the Christmas season, and continue to provide assistance to our community through their many programs,” he said. Every year, the provincial government approves $135 million in community gaming grants distributed among specific sectors, including arts and culture, sports, environment, public safety, human and social services, parent advisory councils and district parent advisory councils.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees ZZ Top have announced that they’re bringing their Hell Raisers Tour to Abbotsford on April 7. The tour will take the trio – who formed 46 years ago in the Houston area – to more than two dozen cities in the U.S. and Canada, with a focus on the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and American south. The Hell Raisers Tour, the follow-up to this year’s successful Groove and Gravy Tour with Blackberry Smoke, begins in Oklahoma and heads north into Indiana and Ontario, and then westward, traversing the U.S.-Canada border multiple times. From there, the band travels southeast, hitting Colorado Springs, Oklahoma and on to Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee and North Carolina. ZZ Top is notable for having the most consistently stable lineup in the history of rock music. Singer/guitarist Billy F Gibbons, bassist/singer Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard continue to impress audiences, drawing material from their 15 studio albums, with combined record sales of over 25 million in the U.S. alone. Timeless hits like La Grange, Legs, Sharp Dressed Man and Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers (from which the tour was named) have kept generations of audiences coming back. Tickets go on sale starting Friday, Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. They are available at ticketmaster.ca, at the venue box office or by calling 1-855-985-5000.

Bragging rights are the honey of sports – they don’t win the next game, but are so sweet when you get them, especially against a long-running rival. The Yale Lions got the full bowl last weekend. Both the senior boys and girls Yale teams won their respective divisions at the sixth annual Abbotsford Police city basketball tournament, which wrapped up at Columbia Bible College on Saturday. The boys team exploded with a strong second quarter to grab the lead against the Mouat Hawks in the final, and they cruised to a 91-82 win. The Lions and the Hawks were tied at 18 after the first quarter, but Yale broke through in the second to build a 46-34 lead at half, and led the rest of the way. Lions head coach

He said the wins were a team effort. “We want our defence and rebounding to push our offence so when it works it can help us win the game,” he added. Roberts said the depth at the tournament proves the strong state of the sport locally. “Abbotsford basketball is in good shape,” Roberts said. “It’s great to see a crowd like this come out and support local basketball, and the message from the Abbotsford Police Department is an important one.” The Hawks beat Bateman 85-70 on Wednesday, and then defeated Hansen 89-64 on Thursday to advance to the finals. The Lions also won the senior girls title, and it was a memorable debut behind the bench for Celeste Dyck. The former Yale and UFV Cascade women’s basketball player led her team to a trio of wins, capped off by a 46-38 win over the MEI Eagles on Saturday at CBC. Arrange transportation for safe entertaining Party hosts are tasked with a number of responsibilities as they try to coordinate successful events. Although planning menus and entertainment might be a host’s top priority, consideration also should be given to keeping guests comfortable and safe, particularly at parties where alcohol will be served. Protecting guests begins with being a responsible party host. It is hosts’ duty to monitor their guests’ al-

safe party travel and have a contingency plan in place if one of these options falls through. • Designated driver: Hosts can choose to remain sober at their parties and shuttle guests home if need be. Otherwise, ask someone else to abstain from alcohol and drive others home at the end of the night. • Taxi service: Hosts can make arrangements with nearby taxi companies or car services to arrive out-

cohol consumption and to recognize when guests have had enough. Having a designated bartender at the event can help limit how much people are being served. Hosts also may want to have several transportation options at the ready to take party participants home after the festivities. Preventing tipsy party guests from driving home can reduce the number of injuries and deaths on the road. Explore the options for

side their homes at the end of the party. If the party is being held somewhere other than your home, carry taxi business cards with you to arrange for pickup at the venue. Van or bus rental: Party buses can be a safe and fun way to transport guests around. This can be the ideal option when bringing a large group of people to the same venue or on a long-distance trip. We pushed the ball and got them into foul trouble.” MEI star Taylor Cousins got into foul trouble early, and Yale never trailed after the first quarter. The Lions struggled in the final frame, only scoring two points, but their defence held the fort. “It’s huge for bragging rights,” Dyck said. “You want to be the top dog in Abbotsford, and it’s a good way to get some momentum going for the start of the season.” She said the Eagles were a tough test for her team. “Credit to them, they’re a great team,” she said. “We were on our heels in the fourth quarter, but I like how we eventually responded.” Players of the game were: Teagan Innes for Yale and Julia Weiss for the Eagles. Dyck said Innes was a key part of the team’s tournament win. “She was outstanding the whole tournament,” she said. “She’s a good post for us, a good defender in the paint, great on the boards, and I love her hustle

SIBORNE (NEE DALBY) Trudy Mar 20, 1950 - Dec 8, 2015 Trudy passed away quite suddenly on Dec 8 at Bevan Lodge from complications attributed to a long, cruel battle with Alzheimers, at the very young age of 65. She was predeceased by her parents, Howard & Joyce Dalby, and leaves behind her husband Brian, sons Byron (Lisa) and Brett (Terry), two wonderful grandchildren, Samara & Brennen, and an extended family. Trudy was born on Mar 20/50 in Ladysmith, B.C., where she was raised, schooled and graduated. In 1970, she married Brian, a banker, and thus began a 45-year journey living in places throughout the Province as well as internationally, including Grand Cayman, Singapore and Hong Kong. Abbotsford has been home for 24 years, but whenever meeting someone for the first time, she always told them she was from Ladysmith, a great Ambassador for the Town that hosts the annual Festival of Lights parade. Trudy loved the sun, so numerous Princess cruises with Brett, lying on Waikiki or poolside in Palm Springs were her favourite activities. She will be forever remembered for her smiles and vibrant personality, which included pinching men and leaving lipstick on cheeks or foreheads. Her greatest joy though was her love for friends and family, especially being “Grans” to Samara & Brennen. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at Bevan Lodge for their professional care, compassion and kindness over the last 8 months. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, Dec 21st at 2pm at The Phoenix located at 33780 King Rd. in Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.wiebeandjeskefh.com Wiebe & Jeske - 604.859.5885

LINDGREN (Knorr) Elizabeth

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Mother Elizabeth (Knorr) Lindgren. Betty was born April 15, 1932 on the family farm near Kerrobert, Saskatchewan and has made Mission her home since 1959. Prior to her working years Mom was an avid gardener, canning and preserving most of the family pantry goods for her family. To the neighborhood kids she was known as Betty Buns as noone’s cinnamon rolls came close to hers. She most enjoyed the family dinners where she could bring out all the special treats. Once her children had grown, mom worked the next 23 years as a caregiver and cook in various residences in the Mission area. Her number one hobby was crocheting, which traveled with her everywhere, She also enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren. Mom is survived by her 4 children: April Rykers, Lance and his wife Diana Lindgren, Mark Lindgren, Blake Lindgren, two sisters, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Bakerview Celebration Center (34863 Cemetery Ave, Mission) with a fellowship tea and internment to follow. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or the Mission Hospice Society. (Christine Morrison Hospice Residence) Online condolences may be sent to the family by visting
