Wrecking Ball for 103 Year Old School
Work begins on new rec centre here By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The original 1912 two-storey Aldergrove Elementary school building came under the wrecking ball on Tuesday morning.
The original 1912 two-storey Aldergrove Elementary school building came under the wrecking ball on Tuesday morning. The building had been a landmark and a heritage site, however, the estimated $2 million cost of removing asbestos and bringing it up to current building code brought about the Township’s decision to demolish it instead. MWL Demolition made quick work of tearing down the gymnasium and annex buildings at the Aldergrove Elementary school site, Monday. Demolition debris is being stacked in piles for recycling or disposal. Contractors with heavy equipment are ripping apart the old buildings to make way for the Aldergrove Recreation Centre planned for the former school site. Langley Township purchased the property several years ago from Langley School District with the intention of constructing a new community centre here. Initial plans had included the heritage building in the new rec centre but the costs were prohibitive and council decided to put those funds into the rec centre construction instead.
Foundations for outdoor pool roof approved Aldergrove Star
Township council has approved changes to the new Aldergrove pool that will allow construction of a canopy cover in the future and, eventually, walls, to make it a true indoor pool. The Monday vote approved spending an extra $280,000 to install “footings and structural enhancements” that would serve as the foundation for a canopy roof over the pool. Council postponed a decision on actually building the canopy, which would cost another $1.6 million. Coun. Bob Long proposed proceeding with the preliminary foundation work immediately, calling it a “prudent” move that makes it easier
to add a roof in the future. Coun. Charlie Fox was the only member present who voted against the proposal, saying it was because he would have preferred to see the canopy approved “right now.” The change will mean less space for the playground and water park proposed next to the new new centre at 27032 Fraser Hwy. To completely enclose the pool would add more than $7 million to the $26 million estimated cost of construction, a staff report to council estimates. The decision comes after Joanne Nicolato of the Aldergrove Recreation and Pool society told a November council meeting that supporters of an indoor pool are so disappointed with the decision to

$55 million to $26 million by opting for an outdoor pool and demolishing the Aldergrove Elementary School. The new Township facility will feature a 550-seat hockey arena and events space, fitness centre, walking surface, multi-purpose rooms, and an outdoor aquatic facility with a six-lane, 25-metre pool, waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, children’s aqua structure, picnic areas and playground. The reduced cost means the Township will not have to hike taxes or seek approval for any more potentially-controversial sales of surplus land to raise the necessary money. The pool and water park are scheduled to open in May, 2018, followed a few months later by the arena.

Crews dig up new water pipe line to repair leaks By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
Crews have torn up the road in front of D.W. Poppy Secondary School in order to locate leaks in the new East Langley Water Supply pipeline. “This leak detection work is labour intensive and requires excavation along the length of the pipe to inspect the joints,” says the latest project update from the Township engineering division to council, filed on Nov. 26. The leaky section of pipe will also need cleaning and disinfecting before it is commissioned, the report says. The work on 52
Avenue, between 236 Street and 240 Street, is expected to take about another month. The rest of the 14 kilometre long pipeline has passed pressure tests. The update says all work on the line should wrap up next month, with service beginning in February. “The project is currently on track to fall within the approved budget,” the report says. Leaks were first uncovered during pressure testing of the line east of 248 Street. A July memo to council said the pipeline manufacturer “advised of quality control issues necessitating replacement of some sections (of pipe).”
Township planners expect the East Langley Water Supply will bring an end to the severe watering restrictions that east Langley residents and businesses have faced during summer months to avoid depleting the aquifers. Work on the water pipeline got underway in May 2013. The $33.5 million pipeline is the biggest project ever undertaken by the Township of Langley’s engineering department. Problems with terrain, leaky pipes and other unexpected issues have seen the completion date moved back several times from its original date in 2014.

Aldergrove skaters put best feet forward for competitions Aldergrove Star
The Aldergrove Club has five Synchronized skating teams that all competed this past weekend, Dec. 12, at the South Surrey arena. The Adult 3 team, skated two solid programs, but were the only team registered in this category, so only did
an exhibition skate. This team will be traveling to Mississauga, Ontario at the beginning of January to skate at the Winterfest Competition. The Beginner team had fun portraying Mary Poppins, this team has many new skaters to synchro, but skated their best and won the Bronze
medal. The Elementary Icicles team has worked hard this season, coming together with new skaters. They placed first after their first skate and second after the second skate, to finish with a Silver medal. The Pre-Novice team, having fun skating to Pitch Perfect music, had
two solid skates to come home with the Gold Medal. The Novice team, skating in this competitive category for the first time, surpassed expectations and skated two strong routines, to also come home with the Gold Medal. The Beginner, Elementary, Pre-
Novice and Novice teams will be traveling to Edmonton at the end of January to compete at the Regional Mountain Championships. The Novice team will be hoping to repeat strong performances to qualify to go onto the National event in Waterloo, Ontario in February.

It has been almost nine years, but Aldergrove resident Davey Butorac has admitted to and apologized for killing Langley City sex trade worker Sheryl Lynn Korroll and Abbotsford prostitute Gwendolyn Lawton in 2007. In Supreme Court in New Westminster on Dec. 4, Butorac, 36, expressed remorse for his actions, through his lawyer, before being sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years. In joint submissions from Crown and his defense counsel, Butorac pleaded guilty to killing Lawton. The judge said he is to serve the two life sentences concurrently. He is getting credit for time served since his arrest in 2008 on a one-to-one basis, and will be eligible for parole in less than 18 years. “Mr. Butorac acknowledged, through his lawyer, having committed these offenses and he wants to obtain treatment to find out why he did what he did,” said Crown counsel Wendy Dawson. “His lawyer did say in respect to the Korroll murder, Mr. Butorac had extreme anger at the time.” No motive was ever revealed during his two trials by jury for killing Korroll. In court, Crown chose to drop a charge of second degree murder of Aldergrove resident Margaret Redford. Butorac was charged in 2010 with killing Redford, more than three years after her body was found in Bertrand Creek in Aldergrove. Her family, including her father and daughter, pleaded

Every winter, the fields of the Fraser Valley are dotted with magnificent trumpeter swans in flocks of 100 or more, their total number overwintering here perhaps in the thousands. With so many of these remarkable birds, the largest and heaviest in North America, their wing-spans up to 10 feet, foraging our grasslands and fallow fields, it’s hard to imagine that in 1916 it was thought there were fewer than 100 left in North America. That was thanks to 19th century commercial hunting of them for their feathers to make quill pens and their skins, bizarrely, to make powder puffs. Of those 100 or so remaining birds, roughly a third of them overwintered on a remote Chilcotin lake. By 1932, that flock dwindled to 19 and if it weren’t for one man living in the B.C. bush, the trumpeter swan would have likely joined the passenger pigeon and dodo bird on the list of extinctions (to be clear, aerial surveys much later discovered a large flock living in the Copper River area of Alaska). Realizing the birds were starving to death on the icebound lake, Ralph Edwards, who was homesteading remote Lonesome Lake (75 walking miles from the nearest post office) contacted the BC Wildlife Service and in turn the Canadian Wildlife Service with his concerns. In a case of surprisingly swift action, particularly on the part of governments, Edwards was provided with $25 with which to purchase 800 pounds of wheat and barley. Editor: The enormously funded 40,000-participant Paris extravaganza has climaxed with 195 countries signing the historic Climate Change agreement. Claiming they have saved the world, the celebration was on and all the justifiers were cheering and congratulating each other. Canada (1.6% of world emissions) at a huge waste of our tax dollars, sent a 383-person entourage to the Paris junket, most who have nothing to do with international treaties. That is more than the USA, Australia and UK combined sent. Of the $100 billion the UN is promising to the so called developing countries, our generous PM Trudeau has cheerfully promised to give away $2.65 billion tax dollars that we have to borrow. Those so called developing nations (including China, India and Russia) in line with their hands out were only too willing to sign the treaty for their piece of the action/cash. The majority of countries are small non-democratic dictatorships where the money becomes corruptly untraceable and misused, some buy arms and wage war on their neighbours. Besides the symbolism and imagery, exactly what was achieved? - They claimed the world’s temperature will be limited to two degrees by 2100 (85 years from now). Amazing, we can’t even predict the weather accurately three days out. Who among us, never mind politicians who signed on and will be out of office in a few years, will be around to keep score? - Most of the fanciful solutions are based on hope ‘n’ change of new innovation technologies that haven’t been invented yet, like nuclear fusion. - The agreement is non-binding with no enforcement or penalty provisions. - When asked by a reporter if there is anything binding to hold a country like China, the world’s biggest polluter to make emission reductions, John Kerry, Obama’s Secretary of State spokesman, replied, “by virtue of the mandatory transparency mechanism.” In other words by shaming them with negative vibes. Good luck trying to shame China or any other country that is receiving our tax dollars/free money. - Each country must report its emissions every five years. We already do that. It’s like saying that all NHL teams will be required to make the scores of their games publicly available to all other NHL teams. They will be held transparently accountable by broadcasting the scores for all to see. Quit complaining, Trudeau and gang is doing us a huge favour... so shut up and pay your carbon taxes. The whole charade should be a Seinfeld episode... “It’s not really a lie if you believe it.” Roland Seguin, Langley
Township’s finances are out of control
Editor: Langley Township finances are out of control. Consider this: the average tax increase over the past five years has been 3.19 per cent, per annum. Over the same five years, the average water levy increase has been 6.71 per cent, the average sewer levy increase has been 3.09 per cent and the average solid waste levy increase has been 7.57 per cent. This has happened when the B.C. consumer price index average increase has only been one per cent, per annum. Total staffing payroll and council cost increases for 2010-2014 have averaged 4.75 per cent, per annum. The number of staff making over $100,000 per annum has increased 90 per cent from 61 staff members to 116. There are several people making over $200,000. Oh, to be an employee of the Township – how sweet is that? Does your income go up three, five or seven per cent, per annum? Not likely, but this is what the Township is foisting upon the taxpayers of this community in the form of increased taxes and levies. We simply cannot afford these kinds of increases. It is just too easy for councils to increase taxes and levies with little effort to control costs. The Township is taxing people out of their homes and businesses. Terry Christie, Langley

Mystery Langley Lotto winners named Aldergrove Star
Their names are Friedrich and Annand Mayrhofer and their son Eric Mayrhofer. The Langley family is the winner of a $50 million winning lottery ticket purchased in Langley in March, 2014. On Tuesday morning, the B.C. Lottery Corporation ended more than a year of speculation by revealing who won the jackpot and explaining why it took so long to name them. The long delay was due to the fact the winners had attempted to keep their names secret by signing ownership of the ticket over to a trust before it was presented to BCLC by their lawyer, without disclosing the identity of the beneficiaries of the trust. Because of the “unique” nature of the claim, BCLC said it had to consult with the Inter-Provincial Lottery Corporation (ILC), the national organization that oversees Lotto Max across Canada. In June 2015, BCLC and the ILC, ruled that only an individual or

Thieves rob Sources food bank By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
In less than 72 hours, multiple thefts at the Sources Langley Food Bank have left the charity scrambling to find help. First, someone stole $1,000 in gift cards from the food bank on Thursday, Dec. 10. Then, late Friday, Dec.
Tax-Free Savings Account 3 Year Escalator Cashable Term Deposit
11, the big panel van the food bank uses to collect donations and pick up purchases disappeared from its parking spot. The theft occurred even though colorful decals had been applied to the van four weeks earlier to promote the food bank and render the van less attractive to thieves. Early on Saturday, Dec. 12, someone used the gas card for the van to buy more than $1300 of diesel gas from a Clearbrook gas station. The van was found abandoned in Aldergrove later that same morning. The nearly 20-yearold Ford E350 was not drivable due to mechanical damage and is being assessed by ICBC to see if it is repairable. This all happened shortly after the food bank discovered that its only other vehicle, a smaller van, needed about $5,000 in repairs and would have to be scrapped. “It has been a challenging week,” said Denise Darrell, Sources
Director of Community Services. “This is the busiest time of year for us and the loss of both of our vehicles is going to cause a huge hardship for our food bank and clients alike.” On Sunday, Dec. 13, the charity had to rent a small van to pick up donations at the Basics for Babies event at the Langley Events Centre. The rental isn’t big enough to collect donations of food from partnering stores in the Langley and Aldegrove regions served by Sources. “We require the ability to collect these donations,” Darrell said. “We also make large purchases.” Since the food bank began operating in Langley a year ago, the number of people it serves has grown to almost 600 (as of last week). The food bank is hoping some one might be able to provide a van or financial help to rent one.

Be Prepared: Winter Driving Tips Working together, we can all make a difference to improve safety during winter snowfalls and storms. • Always check weather and travel conditions before heading out on the road; if they are bad, avoid travelling. • Plan your route ahead of time. Avoid any roads that may become dangerous during bad weather. • Reduce your speed to match road conditions. In winter, it’s safer to drive below the posted speed limit. • Keep at least four seconds distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. This allows plenty of room in situations where you need to brake suddenly on a slippery surface. • Watch for black ice. Slow down when approaching shaded areas, bridges and overpasses as these freeze sooner than others in cold weather. For more information on our winter program, visit tol.ca/stormresponse. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@LangleyTownship) for regular updates from the Township. And, to learn more about the Snow and Ice program, visit our YouTube channel for video demonstrations. Engineering Division 604.532.7300 opsinfo@tol.ca

Kodiaks come back with pair of wins By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
The Aldergrove Kodiaks pulled off an important 4-3 win over the league-leading Mission Outlaws Saturday at Mission. The two teams were tied at 1-1 at the start of the second period but the Kodiaks scored the second period’s only two goals for a 3-1 lead. Mission scored twice in the third but the Kodiaks notched another goal for the 4-3 win. Aldergrove scored three times on their eight power plays, while the Outlaws scored once out of six. The Kodiaks also outshot the Outlaws 24-20, and Cole Forbes served in the net for the Kodiaks. Scoring for Aldergrove were
Joshua Poitras, (power play), Davin Padgham (power play), Spencer Unger (power play) and Elijah Vilio. Assists came from Joshua Pollock, Cameron Davitt (2), Brandon Dolby (2), Matt Oliver and affiliate Ty Pickering. Davitt and Padgham were awarded the game’s first and second stars. The result puts the Kodiaks at 28 points after 27 games (13-12-0-2) for third place in the Harold Brittain conference. KODIAKS CLAW PANTHERS IN 8-5 WIN Aldergrove Kodiaks Eric Callegari and Cameron Davitt had an outstanding and productive night against the Port Moody Panthers Wednesday at Aldergrove Arena.

Both men had hat tricks in a 8-5 win, as Callegari scored four goals and Davitt scored three. The result earned the pair the night’s first and second stars. The Kodiaks outshot the Panthers 51-29 and scored on three of five power plays while the Panthers scored on only one of eight. Dawson Rodin served in the Kodiaks net that night. It also put the Kodiaks back on track with 26 goals after 26 games (12-12-0-2) and third place in the Harold Brittain conference. The Panthers opened the night’s scoring at 1:41 but Kodiak Callegari evened it up five seconds later, assist-
ed by Davin Padgham and Spencer Unger. The Kodiaks scored two more within the next four minutes with a pair from Davitt, assisted by Nathan Washington and Padgham (on the power play), before the Panthers responded with their second goal. Callegari notched another in the dying minutes of the period on a power play, assisted by Unger and Davitt, to make it a 4-2 lead going into the second period. The Panthers scored the first goal of the second period but their play was lacklustre and the Kodiaks scored three more in the period to make it 7-3 at the end of the second.
Scorers were Callegari (two goals, with the first on a power play) and Davitt, with assists from Padgham, Unger (2), Davitt and White. The Panthers improved in the third and Keito Lee scored a pair for their team but it was not enough. Padgham scored the final goal of the night at 13:04, unassisted, for the 8-5 win. TWO GAMES LEFT BEFORE CHRISTMAS BREAK The Kodiaks’ final games before the Christmas break are Wednesday, Dec. 16 versus Grandview Steelers at Aldergrove Arena, and away at George Preston Arena versus the Langley Knights the following night.
Potomak suits up for world championships Aldergrove’s Amy Potomak is among the 23 players who will suit up for Canada at the 2016 IIHF U18 women’s world hockey championships next month. The championships run Jan. 8 to 15 in St. Catharines, Ont. and the final roster was released on Monday, Dec. 7. “The depth of talent at this age group is very impressive, and players have provided plenty of impressive
performances throughout the journey from August camp through to U18 nationals,” said Canadian head coach Lisa Haley. “All of these players have the right combination of skills and intangibles that we believe are essential in competing for a world championship on home soil.” The 16-year-old Potomak currently plays for the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna.
She was named the most valuable player at the national women’s U18 hockey championships last month after helping Team BC win bronze. “We’ve seen the players’ growth and development from selection camp, against the U.S., with their club teams, and most recently at nationals; we believe they’ll be ready to compete for a gold medal in St. Catharines,” aid Melody Davidson, the general manager of the national women’s tam programs.
