The Kettle River Lion’s Club is about to wrap up its annual Christmas hamper drive this Saturday with the delivery of over 100 boxes of food and other items to those West Boundary families and individuals in need. Organizer Phil Gunhouse was pleased by the public’s generous response in helping the Lions fill the hampers with non-perishable goods to complement the club’s contribution of everything needed for a traditional Christmas feast, including hams, potatoes, carrots, onions and some dessert items as well. He did, however, lament the decrease in the Kelowna Food Bank’s (KFB) usual contribution to the hamper drive—the result, he suggested, of increased demand, seemingly throughout the province. KFB will, nevertheless, still be donating several boxes of vegetables, including a large quantity of baby red potatoes, which the Lions will package themselves in boxes donated by Calona Wines. Gunhouse was thrilled to report that Osoyoos’ AG Foods had “really stepped up” this year, by offering to sell the Lion’s Club produce for the hampers at wholesale prices, which will likely save the club several hundred dollars. The hamper drive is the club’s most financially-demanding undertaking, making gestures such as that of AG Foods and manager Derek Morgan especially valuable. “We like to have money left over at Christmas so that we are in a position to help folks with unexpected needs,” said Gunhouse, “such as help with transportation to Kelowna for cancer treatment, or even car repairs. This makes the generosity of stores like AG Foods even more timely.” The hampers go out on Saturday morning, as a convoy of club members will be delivering the much welcomed Christmas donation to all corners of the West Boundary.
Here comes Santa Claus!

Chairman Randy Kappes has announced the winner and two runner-ups in the West Boundary Community Forest Corporation’s logo competition. West Boundary was awarded a community forest by the province in 2014. Through it, the community hopes to influence the region’s forestry sector and help reduce the economic downswings the area has experienced historically, as well as see local values expressed in the way the forest is managed. The corporation expects the

community forest to play an important role in the future of the area’s forestry sector and wanted to make sure its logo reflects those values as well as forestry itself. Area schools helped initiate the contest, which resulted in a logo the corporation considers effective in doing just that. The design will be prominently displayed on all things related to the community forest. The winner of the competition was Julia Harcus. In second place was Trinity Griffiths and third place went to Rayanne Goddard. Kappes and the rest of the board would like to thank all the artists for their submissions and congratulate the winners.

Rezansoff re-elected chair CRAIG LINDSAY
Boundary Creek Times Contributor
Rezansoff re-elected Once again, Teresa Rezansoff has been voted in as board chair for the School District 51 (SD51) board of education. Rezansoff, who also sits as president of the B.C. School Trustees Assocation (BCSTA), was voted in at the regular board meeting on Dec. 8. Cindy Strukoff was voted in as vice-chair. “You’re always humbled by the trust that people put in you,” said Rezansoff. Rezansoff said the new board, which was elected in December 2014, has really gelled well and is accomplishing a great deal. “It’s been a great year. I think we’ve all come with individual strengths that I think are really complementary of each other. For a new board, it was a really smooth transition and we’re advancing quickly.” New to the board this year were Katie Jepsen and Mark Danyluk. In other voting at the meeting, Cathy Riddle was voted trustee representative to BCSTA provincial council; David Reid was voted as the trustee representative for the B.C. Public Schools Education Association (BCPSEA) council; and Jepsen was voted as trustee representative to the Okanagan Labour Relations Council (OLRC).
CLES Maker’s Day
MIDWAY LIBRARY SD51
BRIEFS REPORT
At the board meeting, the trustees heard a presentation from Shaun Lockhart, principal, and Kevin Sawyer, parent, about the Christina Lake Elementary School Maker’s Day, which took place in November. “It was a day they had where all the students made something,” said Rezansoff. “The students planned for a project and did it with the help of lots of mostly dads. They did all kinds of things such as build shelves and tables and birdhouses. Whatever the kids could conceptualize, they built, from kindergarten on up. It was just a fantastic full day.” City says thanks
Representatives from the City of Grand Forks attended the meeting and thanked the school board for allowing them to use school board property (near Overwaitea) during the reconstruction of City Hall after the fire. “We provided them with space we had downtown to relocate to,” said Kevin Argue, superintendent of School District 51. “They presented a beautiful painting to give to the board in recognition. That was a really neat moment at the beginning
of the meeting.” Non-instructional days
SD51 also announced recently that there would be two additional non-instructional days in the district on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 and Monday, April 18, 2016. “These would have been days that students attended school but with this announcement, those two days will now be non-school days’ for the students of School District 51,” said Argue. “Buses will not run those days and schools will not be in session.” The two days are being provided to teachers for training and colloboration regarding the new curriculum. The Ministry of Education has announced that the new Kindergarten to Grade 9 curriculum will be implemented by teachers starting in September 2016. The new curriculum will be in trial phase for Grade 10-12 starting next year.

Why should you have life insurance? When it comes to buying life insurance, it’s easy to procrastinate and put off the decision to another day. Some people push the thought completely out of their minds thinking, “Why put money into something that won’t pay until after I’m dead?” Good question, but life insurance isn’t really for you. It gives protection and security to the living—the spouse, children, and loved ones left behind after you die. Depending on the value of the policy, the person named as the beneficiary could receive $10, 000, $100, 000 or even a million dollars. That money could go a long way toward paying funeral costs, the mortgage and day-to-day bills. One of the major advantages of owning life insurance, in addition to the protection for your family, is that the death benefit is free of tax—and we all know that’s a good thing. Typically, there are three types of insurance policies available— term, permanent and universal life. Each has their own unique advantages and limitations. I often get asked, “What’s the difference between term and permanent insurance?” A term insurance policy covers a specific term period (or term), typically five, ten or twenty years. If you die during this period, your beneficiary receives the death benefit stated on the policy. If you die even one day after the policy expires, your beneficiary won’t receive anything. The length of term is also important because after the term, you may not be insurable because your health may have deteriorated, or you may have contracted a disease or sickness. If you’re still insurable after the term ends, your premiums will likely increase because you’re older and a higher risk to the insurance company. Whatever your age though, your term insurance policy will have a lower premium than a permanent policy of the same value.
Term insurance meets a particular need and gives you affordable protection with the flexibility to choose from a wide range of term lengths. A permanent life insurance policy covers you for as long as you live, rather than just a specific term. I often recommend that if you’re under 35, you should purchase permanent insurance so that you can have coverage for life at a level premium. In addition, the cash value that builds up over the years can allow you to take a loan for emergencies or used to pay premiums if you run into financial difficulties. Universal life insurance is a form of permanent insurance that provides lifetime protection with lots of flexibility. With universal life, you have a policy fund, which is your cash value and acts like a cash reserve. Your premium is deducted from the reserve and the rest is left to accumulate interest which can be invested in a wide variety of investments including mutual funds. You don’t pay tax on the interest in your policy fund unless you withdraw it or exceed the legal tax-deferral limit. If there’s enough in your policy fund to cover your premium, you can skip a payment because it will be deducted from the amount you’ve already paid into your reserve. I find this especially helpful for seasonal workers or workers that get laid off unexpectedly. Life insurance is a key component of a personal financial plan. It’s investing in security so that your spouse and family won’t have to shoulder the responsibility on their own.

A dark twist The Weather Network’s winter forecast has been remarkably accurate thus far, as temperatures throughout the province remain mild, with most areas, including Boundary, experiencing below normal snowfall. While higher elevations are seeing the snow pack gradually deepen, many communities, Rock Creek, Midway and Greenwood among them, are getting rain, or wet snow, which is simply not translating into an accumulation of the white stuff. On the other hand, many ski hills are poised for a potentially good season. Despite the disappointment caused by the non-opening of Mt. Baldy, other resorts are faring quite well in the early going, some dramatically better than last year at this juncture. But there’s a dark twist to the warmth, which is in large part due to the fact this year’s El Niño, which the World Meteorological Organization says is one of the strongest on record. The same El Niño which is delivering warmth to Canada, is also affecting parts of Africa with above-average temperatures and a delay in the life-giving rainy season. In South Africa, which is at the tail end of the Southern Hemisphere’s spring, highs near or exceeding 40° C were recorded in early December. As for the lack of rain, the South African government has declared a drought disaster in several provinces. The country is in the midst of its worst drought since 1982, and the dry conditions extend throughout the region And in parts of the continent where the rains have come, they’ve been too much to handle. In Kenya, for example, torrential rains have killed at least 20 people, and authorities in Uganda are warning people in landslide-prone mountain areas to move if they can. In Ethiopia, the government has said at least 10 million people will need food assistance due to harvest failure, according to the BBC, including millions of children. We here at home lament the fact that next year’s growing season may be impacted by this weather pattern, while many around the globe find their lives forever changed by El Nino’s wrath. Perhaps mankind is to be blamed, or simply a cyclical shift in the earth’s climate; whatever it is doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.

Fair association extends thanks Editor, The Times: Another year has slipped by and despite some challenging times this summer with the wildfire in our area, we managed to have a very successful fall fair. The fair’s success is always
due to the countless volunteers and the generosity of our local communities, businesses and non-profit societies. This past summer was quite stressful for a lot of people in our area due to the fire, but you all gave tremendous effort to make the fair a success. On behalf of the fall fair association, I would like to
extend our sincere thanks to you all and wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Looking forward to seeing you all in 2016! Bill Bosovich, President, Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association

Concert a hoedown!
Greenwood and Midway Elementary students teamed up last Thursday to present their production of Santa’s Holiday Hoedown. Following the concert, students held an entrepreneur market, through which they raised over $600 for their community.
Carol comes to life West Boundary Elementary School students presented a wonderfully-styled and well-acted production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol last Wednesday evening. (Above) Carollers provide some soothing relief from Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean-spiritedness. (Below) Scrooge enlightens a trio of workers as to his disdain for Christmas. As we all know, even Mr. Scrooge eventually got into the spirit of the season.

lyn, Standard, Stemwinder, Montezuma, Rawhide and Idaho; the most important consolidation of copper mines that have been brought under one management in British Columbia.” (ed. – A few years later, the company would take over management of the illfated smelter at Boundary Falls.) ➤ Phoenix is Booming – “The town of Phoenix is growing rapidly. There is a strong demand for business lots, and George Rumberger, the owner of the townsite, is finding some difficulty to fill all the applications for lots on the main street. The several hundred men at the mines, earning good wages, have to live near the mines in the absence of speedy and cheap means for carrying them any distance to and from their work. Where so many men are congregated, hotels and business houses are sure to follow. Rumberger was the first to take advantage of these conditions. He secured the surface rights for some of the mining claims, subdivided into lots and placed them on the market.”

Guides and Pathfinders have made 12 toques and 15 scarves out of fleece fabric for the homeless as a part of their community service, and sewed felt stuffies for Victim Support. They also created Christmas cards for the community which were hand delivered Friday with a rendering of We wish you a merry Christmas. The girls meet every Wednesday and experience many new activities covering all aspects of the world around them and varied facets of Girl Guides. These new adventures earn them badges towards challenges. The Pathfinder program is three years and can earn them the Canada Cord, the top award in Guiding at this level, and is two high school credits towards graduation.
