Pictograph-inspired mural unveiled in Nelson Students in the Wildflower program have completed a massive mural at Nelson’s Central school, inspired by the pictographs of local First Nations.
Wildflower students celebrated the unveiling of their new mural at the Central school gymnasium with Sinixt elder Marilyn James and artist Amber Santos in Nelson recently.
Local artist Amber Santos encouraged students to think about what they hope to offer the community. “We’re inspired by the idea that young Sinixt, when they were
looking to find their gifts to the community, as a spiritual visioning, they would draw their gifts,” Santos said. “So we launched that as a challenge to the kids, for them to come

up with a symbol that represents their gifts. It could be something they’re good at, something they care about or some sort of positive impact they make on their family or in their school.” Once each student created their symbol, they sketched it out in their classroom for practice and ultimately painted it on panels laid out in the parking lot. The project was completed in May by members of both Nelson and Creston Wildflower schools but officially unveiled last week.

‘Today I want VAL ROSSI West Kootenay Advertiser
“I was two blocks away from where I grew up, and around neighbours that knew me all of my life and they didn’t even recognize me. I was sitting in the middle of the street half naked, and I didn’t know how the hell I got there. People were saying there was a derelict in the neighbourhood, and as soon as I lifted my head, everybody realized it was me.” This is the story of a local man who almost lost everything to his addictions. His habit of topping up a drink with a whole other drink eventually led to cocaine, and then his inclinations went from drugs to girls. He dealt drugs, was arrested and nearly died. It took three attempts at treatment to find sobriety but today he is 11 years clean. Every day for him still starts with “today I want to live; what do I have to do to live?” Following Alcoholics Anonymous’ (AA) 12-step tradition, he will remain unidentified; for the purposes of this piece, let’s call him John. John’s first taste of alcohol was at six years old when he started having sips of wine. By his early teen years, he’d started smoking cigarettes and stealing his old man’s booze. “It almost made me feel alive and the guys that I was hanging around with, we used to find different ways to drink more and more and more because we wanted to be like the older kids,” he recalled. A primarily shy youth, he became a weekend warrior, and a highly functioning alcoholic. By the time he was 19 years old, he’d start drinking on Wednesday night and keep it up right through early Sunday morning. After high school, John made his way to college, where he only attended about three classes and instead spent most of his time drinking, picking up prostitutes, and doing cocaine. “I was basing my life on a dead rock star — Jim Morrison — and I wanted to achieve basically what he achieved; the ultimate goal was death,” he said. John’s sprint down this destructive path was briefly paused when he blacked out one night in his parent’s neighbourhood “and it scared the living hell” out of him. He was 23 years old and at that moment, he wanted
to live. His first attempt at getting clean lasted about three months, until a trip to San Francisco ended with a relapse. “I remember being the only white guy in Chinatown with two Budweisers in my hand yelling out racial slurs because that’s how smart I was,” he said. In his mind he still didn’t have a problem; he compared himself to the guy next to him at his first AA meeting and didn’t see a parallel or a similar issue at all. He still wanted to be a social drinker but back then he didn’t realize he had a two-fold illness: both a mental obsession and an allergy, where his body wouldn’t process alcohol the way the next person would. “A normal person would have one or two drinks, feel tipsy and say, ‘I’m OK,’” he explained. “My body actually craves more and more alcohol and my craving is worse after the tenth drink than it is after the first drink.” The journey continued when he met his future ex-wife — somebody who could actually keep up with his lifestyle. At this point he was no longer the drug dealer but the user. Once again, he started to become everything he hated and his standards sank with every drop of alcohol he consumed. The couple’s expensive habits led them to Northern Alberta for work, where John began to spiral further out of control and the “rocky marriage” ended. The last three months of using he estimates he slept maybe eight hours total and was in a state of cocaine psychosis. In the end, he had a prostitute living with him and when he began running out of money, selling his body seemed like an option. “It was almost as though I was at the top of the food chain being a dealer to a user and now I was sinking to another level,” he said. No sleep and little food left him 50 pounds lighter and a frightening image to his family who hadn’t seen him in roughly six months. They were done with his self-destruction and told him: “if you want to die, go right ahead and shoot yourself or jump off the bridge, but do it quick so we can move on.’” He found himself like many others he had once shared rooms with. He was broke, had no job, no wife and no home. He had nothing, and for the first time, he truly realized what he had become, and that he had a problem and needed help. “When the hurt outweighs the obsession sort of thing, that’s when you finally wake
Recovering alcoholic says he’s one drink away from what he used to be up,” he said. “They talk about spirituality in Alcoholics Anonymous, and I had an epiphany that I was done. All I could hear was ‘I’m done.’” John spent six months in a treatment centre before moving on to live in a half-way house, where he worked his way through AA’s twelve principle steps that start with that all-too-important act of admitting you are powerless over alcohol. His journey to recovery started with meetings, where he sat next to numerous people from a variety of walks of life — everyone from a homeless person off the street to a former NHL player to an otherwise successful lawyer. Each participant had a different story, but they all shared a common ending. “If I had cancer or diabetes, I’d be going to chemotherapy, I’d be taking my insulin,” he said. “Going to meetings with Alcoholics Anonymous is just like me taking that insulin.” He began to find faith, and though for some of his peers that meant praying to a coffee table or to Mother Nature, for him it was easiest to think of the
“big white guy in the clouds,” although he recognized that was merely a symbol. Through service work and helping others in the program, John began to heal. He still works with others, usually four or five at a time, and though it has been many years since he’s had a drink, he will forever be recovering. “I’m never going to be past where I started,” he admits. “I’m one drink away from being that person I was before.” His life has changed dramatically for the better and though he’s ashamed of his past, he acknowledges it as a piece of the whole of his story. “I’ve got alcoholism on both sides of my family,” he said. “One in ten are alcoholics; I must’ve been the tenth person.” Alcoholics Anonymous is an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 (two years after the end of prohibition in the United States) by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. the most successful small projects that the Village of Fruitvale has undertaken and the feedback from the users has been unanimously positive to date,” said Lila Cresswell, village chief administrative officer. Located in the basement of the Fruitvale Memorial Centre, the GYM, a free workout facility, has become a community hub for its senior and middler citizens to get in a daily quota of exercise. There are currently about 340 members and 18 awaiting access cards, Cresswell noted. “When we started we assumed the take up would be about 80 to 100 members,” she added.
“We are surprised and delighted at the number of seniors and middlers using the gym; and on a very regular basis.” The GYM went from idea to reality when the village received a $25,000 seniors’ grant from the government this spring and was backed by other local contributors. The funding covered the cost of brand new equipment such as a rowing machine, a couple treadmills and ellipticals, a stationary bike and much more. Now it has become a routine for a large portion of seniors in the Fruitvale area. When fitness partners Sharon Brown, Cathy Seifrit, and Pauline
Jorgensen are not working up a sweat outside, be it walking or snowshoeing, the crew of ladies punch in at the GYM for a cardio fix. “Right now it’s really good because if it’s icy and we can’t walk, we’ll just go to the gym,” said Brown. The users are from all over the Beaver Valley, roughly 50 per cent from Fruitvale, 35 per cent from Electoral Area A and the remaining coming from Montrose. The total cost of the GYM was $37,000 and funded by donations and grants - $25,000 from the New Horizons for Seniors grant and the $12,000 balance from local and regional busi-
nesses, societies and community groups. Fruitvale Mayor Patricia Cecchini said the response from the community has been overwhelming. “It’s been interesting talking to all the massage therapists and physiotherapists, even in Trail, and they say that they have tons of patients who are using it, so they’re actually all on board and sponsoring us as well now by sending us donations to keep it going,” said Cecchini. “It’s been really exciting and fun,” she added. “Every time I go in there I feel like such a hero because they’re all like ‘This is the best thing that has happened in the valley.’”
BCSA sheds light on safe holiday decorating With the holiday season just around the corner, BC Safety Authority (BCSA) is reminding British Columbians to protect themselves and their property by following a few basic lighting safety tips. Faulty wiring of seasonal lights can create electrical hazards and result in injury or property damage. To reduce risk, BCSA advises consumers to follow the manufacturer’s directions for installation and use of indoor and outdoor lights and to use only products approved for use in Canada. “Aged or worn out Christmas lighting and displays are subjected to cold and wet winter conditions as well as UV from the sun. This can have a deteriorating effect on the lighting. Lighting should be looked at each year to make sure it is in good working order,” said Michael Pilato, BCSA Senior Safety Officer. BCSA recommends checking lights or other electrical decorations for defects before use and discarding any with cracked receptacles, frayed or loose wires. Another important precaution is to turn off all electrical lighting and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed. In addition, BCSA provides the following tips for lighting your home safely this holiday season: • Ensure that your lights have Canadian safety approval certification. Check all of your electrical holiday decorations for labels with approved agency marks. A full list of approved safety markings can
be found at: http://www.safetyauthority.ca/alert/ electrical-information-bulletin-approved-certification-marks-electrical-products • Follow the manufacturer’s directions for installing and using any electrical decorations. • Consider switching to energy efficient LED lights – they produce less heat, which reduces the risk of fire. • Use the right cord for the location — indoor and outdoor cords are different. • Outdoor receptacles within 2.5 meters of grade require a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacle. • Never run cords under rugs where people will walk over them or through doorways or windows where they may become pinched – breakage of pinched wires can cause a fire. • Never use staples or nails to attach cords to walls or roofs. • Make sure cords can handle the amperage indicated on your electrical devices, and avoid multioutlet adaptor connections which can overload your outlet. • Outdoor lights left up year-round will likely need to be replaced. • Keep lights out of the reach of small children. For additional information about electrical safety, visit BCSA’s website at www.safetyauthority.ca.

One hundred twenty-fourth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Mirror Lake was first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of March 7, 1896: “The Kaslo Curling Club which, with the exception of one at Golden is the only curling club in BC, held its annual bonspiel on Tuesday, 3rd inst., on Mirror lake, three miles from Kaslo.” The club was only formed in November 1895, so this was in fact the first bonspiel held in the Kootenays — Horace D. Bucke won a medal given by the Manitoba branch of the Royal Caledonian Club. A history compiled by the Kaslo and District Women’s Institute in 1956 stated: “The community of Mirror Lake was named from a small picturesque lake surrounded by mountains which protect it from winds, thus leaving the surface of the water smooth and reflective as a mirror, from which the name derives.” For years, a Nelson company cut and sold ice from the lake. Mirror Lake had another claim to fame: its post office, which opened in 1909 and closed in 1970, was allegedly featured in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! as the world’s smallest. The cartoon has proved elusive, but it certainly was tiny, about the size of a toolshed. It now sits next to the SS Moyie in Kaslo. ANNOUNCEMENT ! Mirror Lake is seen in ca. 1940s-1950s postcard. Mirror Lake’s post office, which operated 1909 to 1970, was claimed to be the smallest in the world. Greg Nesteroff collection mentioned in the Vancouver Daily World of June 2, 1896: “The Crusader group, consisting of five claims, bonded for $50,000 … resembles the Molly Gibson of Aspen, Col., in all of its characteristics.” Both the Colorado and Kokanee Creek Molly Gibson mines proved to be major producers. But ours is best known as the site of one of West Kootenay’s deadliest disasters: on Christmas Day 1902, an avalanche struck the bunkhouse, killing nine men. Molly Gibson Landing was first mentioned in the Nelson Tribune of Sept. 5, 1900: “Three cars of tramway outfit for the

Molly Gibson mine were received yesterday from Illecillewaet and forwarded to Molly Gibson landing.” The Molly Gibson post office operated from June to October 1911, when the name was changed to Kokanee. A second Molly Gibson post office operated from August 1912 to November 1915, although it’s unclear whether it was at the mine site or at the landing. CORRECTION: A caption last week that accompanied this column was duplicated. One of the ads depicted, for the Mineral City townsite, appeared in the Nelson Miner of June 12, 1897.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, concern yourself with substantive actions and not empty promises. This will make it easier for you to make decisions about pressing issues.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, make the most of an opportunity to move forward with your goals. You have plenty of energy, and your mind is focused. Hang around with like-minded individuals as well.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20
Don’t get too wrapped up in other people’s business, Cancer. You don’t want to intrude on others, and your loved ones are fully capable of solving their own problems.
Capricorn, now is a great time to take a step back and exhale. Avoid taking on any additional responsibilities. Instead, take some time to recharge.
Try not to spread yourself too thin, Sagittarius. If you do, you will not be able to put your best foot forward. If you feel yourself getting stressed, step back.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you may feel like you’re on top of the world this week. That’s because you have the potential to conquer an elusive goal in the next few days.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, let friends know how much they mean to you because you might not say it often enough. Others will appreciate your candor and generosity.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22
PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20
Act now, Virgo, or you might get left behind. You can’t sit around and wait for things to unfold. Sometimes you have to take charge, and this is one of those times.
Pisces, you tend to hold your feelings inside and that can be unhealthy. Share your feelings more often so negative energy will not build.

Former Nelson city councillor Donna Macdonald will release her memoir Surviving City Hall in the spring.

Former Nelson city councillor Donna Macdonald’s soon-to-be released memoir Surviving City Hall will be many things to many people, but she doesn’t want readers to think of it as an exposé. “It’s not a tell-all, mostly because I couldn’t possibly tell it all,” Macdonald told the Star, shortly after signing her contract with Nightwood Editions. “I’ve worked really hard to be respectful in the stories I’ve told, and it’s not my goal to get revenge or hurt anyone. This is about the lessons I learned, and about what good leadership looks like, what it’s constraints are. I’ve been very kind.” Macdonald was first elected in 1988, and spent 19 years in public office before retiring in 2014. She worked with five different Nelson mayors — Gerald Rotering, Bill Ramsden, Gary Exner, Dave Elliott and John Dooley — and participated in many of the city’s most ambitious projects. “I worked on the new Lakeside soccer fields, and it was really important to me we maintained public access all along the waterfront when the Prestige Resort was built.” She’s proud of her work with the Nelson Housing Committee, and her track record on affordable housing. She’s also been involved in supporting climate change initiatives. “I just about killed myself working on the community complex, getting that new arena and the various renovations done in 2005,” she said. And along the way, she’s learned quite a few lessons. That’s what she’s hoping to share with readers, who don’t necessarily have to know anything about Nelson or municipal politics to take away meaningful insights. “My target audience is general readers, people who love communities and want to understand how municipal government works, the mechanics of it. This book is meant to encourage engagement.” Surviving City Hall will be released in spring 2016. PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until January 4, 2016. There are more than a million reasons for the BC SPCA to thank all the people who participated in this year’s Million Acts of Kindness (MAK) movement. As the end of 2015 nears, the society is celebrating the success of the campaign, which was launched in February to help celebrate the BC SPCA’s 120th anniversary of helping the province’s companion, farm and wild animals. Each week, a featured act of kindness was highlighted on the movement’s website, millionacts.ca, and MAK supporters jumped on the chance to spread kindness. “We learned that kindness counts – even one small act can mean the world to one animal who is rescued from an abuse, neglect or abandonment,” Chortyk says. “And kindness can be contagious! Completing acts of kindness can be catching, and we can only hope that the movement inspired participants to continue practicing kindness in their everyday lives.” British Columbians helped the BC SPCA bring chilly cats in from the cold and turned brrrs into purrs during a half-price cat adoption promotion, presented by Hill’s® Science Diet®, as the society also celebrated a major milestone: the adoption of its one millionth animal. From Nov. 20-30, animal lovers across the province responded to the half-price event in a big way, adopting 255 cats and 219 kittens (474 total adoptions). The cat love continued on Wednesday, Nov. 25, when the BC SPCA celebrated the adoption of a tiny grey tabby kitten named Meetsa, who also happened to be the one
millionth animal adopted from the society. To mark such a massive milestone during such a successful cat adoption promotion is fantastic, says BC SPCA general manager of community relations Lorie Chortyk. “What a great way to celebrate our 120th year of helping the province’s companion, farm and wild animals,” she says. “We can’t thank all the animal lovers of B.C. enough for their amazing support. We are so grateful.” Happy Holidays! The Trail Regional BCSPCA staff would like to thank our amazing volunteers, sponsors and the people of the West Kootenay / Boundary Region for your ongoing support to save lives. We could not do the work that we do with you. Wishing for the best this holiday season to everyone including our furred and feathered friends. Wish List Items: Cat litter, Pet treats, un-scented dry sheets, HE Laundry soap, paper towel, Printer paper, towels and blankets, pet toys, leashes/martingale collars Also excepted: Cash donations, Gift cards and Canadian Tire money

Artists win top prize in BCWWA contest SUBMIT TED The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) has received a $2,500 prize for their entry in the BC Water & Waste Association’s (BCWWA) provincial “What’s Water Worth to You?” contest. The “What’s Water Worth to you?” contest was part of the BCWWA’s “Value of Water” initiative to build understanding about how water systems protect public health and the environment, as well as the need to re-invest in BC’s water infrastructure.

The contest was launched during Water Week in May and drew more than 75 high-quality entries before it closed in October. “The passion and creativity that entrants put into the contest submissions was impressive,” says BCWWA CEO, Tanja McQueen. “I hope that this project encourages
