Views Opinion: Bad review won’t get us down by Brian Coombs So, according to Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world, Cranbrook is not a place you want to visit. “The area’s main center, 31km southeast of Kimberley, Cranbrook is a dusty crossroads. Hwy 3/95 bisects the town, which is a charmless strip of motels,” states the review. In earlier reviews, it even suggested that visitors skip Cranbrook and head to Kimberley or Creston. Well, so what? Everyone who lives or works here knows that the lazy reviewer from Lonely Planet had to have just driven through on the highway before writing that piece. We all know that Cranbrook has some absolutely wonderful neighbourhoods and most importantly, we all know that within 20 minutes of the downtown core, you can find some of the most breathtaking scenery in the province. And on a summer morning at the Farmers’ Market with the stalls filled and buskers competing for your attention, it is hard to imagine there being a better place to be. But living in this province, it is easy to take all that beauty and talent for granted. There is something more about living here

that won’t ever fit nicely into a travel guide. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,” said Mayor Lee Pratt. “You know, it is a workaday town with down-toearth residents and workers who appreciate the amenities we have to offer as a result of their hard work. We are a blue collar town.” That really sums it up nicely. In a province where plenty of smaller communities face chronic underemployment or natural disasters such as fire, mudslides or even earthquakes, Cranbrook is steady — a rock of commerce adrift in what often seems like a sea of uncertainty. This city is the glue that holds the East Kootenay region together. Around a thousand cars travel from Kimberley to Cranbrook each morning and the drivers of those cars are coming here to work. But work is not the only reason why people choose to be here. To put it bluntly, there are a lot of other places in the country, or the planet where a person could get more money for their work. But we stay right here. It could be that the city is surrounded by golf courses. It could be that there are lakes and trails within a nine-iron shot of the city limits. It could be

that there are plays, concerts, hockey games and art exhibitions happening on a near constant basis. It could also be that it has been proven, time and time again, that the people of Cranbrook care for each other. What else could explain the huge success different groups have had in raising funds for locals in need? Lastly, the Cranbrook area was and is home to some legendary tough people. Sam Steele used to call these parts his stomping grounds. Scott Niedermayer laced up on local rinks and Sophie Pierre brought BC treaty negotiations to a national stage. The list of people from this area who triumphed against adversity goes on and on. That is because the people who are from here, or who have moved here and chosen to stay, are a different breed. We are tough, pragmatic, creative and rarely run from a fight. So what if visitors aren’t greeted by giant pink flamingos coated in glitter? Cranbrook is a business hub, a jumping off point to adventure and a place we can be proud to call home. It doesn’t matter if Lonely Planet ever changes its review of the city. Cranbrook has been around long before that particular business and will thrive and prosper long after it’s gone. We’re built to last.

Hugs: To all the hard working staff and students that put on a FANTASTIC fundraiser (for the school in Nepal) at Gordon Terrace last week! You could see the enthusiasm the students had for their cause and it was heart warming to see such passionate little activists! Well done Gordon Terrace, you should be very proud! Hugs: A big hug! On Dec. 9, we were shopping in Superstore and to our surprise a lovely lady came up to us and gave us a PC gift card from Santa. You know who you are. Thank you so much and have a beautiful Christmas! Hugs: A big thank you to the persons responsible for the reopening of the youth center in Kimberley after an eight day closure. This facility provides a valuable service to many young people in our community. Upwards of twenty young people access it’s services on a daily basis. So, thanks again and keep up the good work! Hugs: The biggest hug for Christmas, the best day of the year!

Hugs: I would like to say a Huge Thank you to the Cranbrook City Works gentleman who stopped his truck on his way up Mt. Royal Drive, to help me up off the road when I fell, and drove me home. Thank you!!! And a Huge Thank You also to our awesome neighbors, Rick and Linda, who took me to the hospital to get my leg x-rayed, and shoveled our driveway and sidewalk as well. Thank You!!! Love to all of you! Hugs: A green hug to the COP21 participating nations in reaching an agreement for attempting to limit climate change to 2 degrees beyond pre-industrial days. If only we could convince the people to play their parts by parking their precious greenhouse gas emitting gas guzzlers powered by dirty sands more often! Slugs: To the driver who kept “creeping” up on the small kindergarten child who had fallen on the ice while crossing 4th Street South near TM Roberts School. She was sure you were go-

ing to run her over. Your action scared her so much that she cried all the way home. What was the hurry? Hugs: Many, many hugs to all the Cranbrook Elementary School children that participated in the Mass Christmas Choir Concert. What an uplifting and joyous performance. Hugs: Merry Christmas hugs to the Cranbrook Elementary Music Teachers and their Assistants for the many hours of volunteer work given to make the 35th Annual Mass Christmas Choir Concert such a wonderful event for parents and grandparents to take pride in. Thank you.

Fire safety during the holidays The holiday season is a great time for friends and family. Following these ten rules will help to ensure it is a safe season as well. 1. Water fresh trees daily. It’s time to decorate the Christmas tree! If you’re using a real tree, buy it fresh and keep the base of the trunk in water at all times. Keep your tree away from any sparks or heat source, such as fireplace, heater, or candle. 2. Make sure you have working smoke alarms. With family and friends spending extra time at your home over the holidays, it’s extra important to check your smoke alarms. Replace them if they are over 10 years old. Remember that you need working smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test your alarms to make sure they alert you and your family if a fire occurs, giving you the precious seconds you need to safely escape. 3. Check all sets of lights before decorating. Before you put those lights on the tree or around

the front window, check the cords closely. Discard any sets that are frayed or damaged. 4. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless gas that can quickly kill you. Installing carbon monoxide alarms in your home will alert you to the presence of this deadly gas. Replace any carbon monoxide alarms over seven years old. 5. Make sure everyone is familiar with your home’s fire escape plan. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all members of the household and make sure someone is prepared to help young children, older adults, or anyone else that may need assistance to evacuate. Agree that once outside, everybody stays outside, at which point you can call 911 from a cell phone or neighbour’s house. 7. Give space heaters space. If you are using space heaters to help take the chill off, remember to keep them at least one metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn such as curtains,

upholstery, or holiday decorations. 8. When you go out, blow out! Candles can set the perfect mood for a holiday celebration, but remember to always blow out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Keep lit candles safely away from children and pets and anything that can burn, such as curtains, upholstery, or holiday decorations. 9. Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children. People often keep matches and lighters handy to light holiday candles. But matches and lighters can be deadly

in the hands of children. If you smoke, have only one lighter or book of matches and keep it with you at all times. 10. Watch what you heat! The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year, which means it’s easy to get distracted from what we are doing. Cooking fires most commonly occur when cooking is left unattended. Always stay in the kitchen when cooking, especially if using oil or high temperatures. If a pot catches fire, carefully slide a tightfitting lid over the pot to smother the flames and then turn off the heat.

Keep Your Holidays From Going Up in Flames!

Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services Offers Fire Prevention Tips for a Safe and Festive Holiday Season What few of us consider is that the holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home fires. Many households engage in holiday activities that serve as some of the leading causes of home fires, including cooking. Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations also significantly contribute to the seasonal causes of home fires. Visit our website at www.cranbrook.ca and click on ‘Holiday Fire Safety’ on our homepage for tips and downloadable information sheets. By taking simple precautions, people can avoid potential fire hazards, and make this time of year a healthy and happy one.

initiatives Basin students will continue to have hands on opportunities to increase their understanding of the natural environment, which Basin residents have told us is a priority.” The Know Your Watershed program will be receiving $540,500 over three years. Working with environmental educators in the Basin, the Trust developed this program in 2010 to help grade eight students understand where their water comes from, how it is used and where it goes after it is used. The program is delivered to schools by local educators around the Basin working with Wildsight. Learn more at wildsight.ca/ program/know-yourwatershed. “Wildsight is thrilled to continue working with the Trust to deliver Know Your Watershed,” said Monica Nissen, Manager for Wildsight’s education programs. “We hear from teachers and students across the Columbia Basin how much they love the action-oriented, hands-on learning of the program. Because it incorporates knowledge from local community experts, not only does it make a big impact on students, but it also strengthens the community as a whole.” The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) will be receiving $500,000 over three years. Created in partnership with the Trust in 2002,

CBEEN supports environmental education in the Basin by offering p ro f e s s i o n a l development for educators and providing them access to training, resources, opportunities and tools. It also delivers the Wild Voices for Kids program, which has local experts deliver curriculumlinked programs to schools across the Basin. Learn more at

cbeen.org. “CBEEN is excited to continue to play a key role in encouraging environmental stewardship and sustainability in the Canadian Columbia Basin by supporting environmental education,” said Duncan Whittick, CBEEN Executive Director. “There are so many educators from across our region who provide excellent learning opportunities for both classrooms and communities, and
